"The Kirkland Lake-Larder Lake gold area is in northeastern Ontario and is a continuation of the ore-bearing belt that extends across northwestern Quebec through the Rouyn, Cadillac, Malartic, and Bourlamaque areas. It is the oldest mining camp along this famous mineral belt. Gold discoveries were first made at Larder Lake and Swastika in 1906, but it was not until 1913 that important developments at Kirkland Lake created a real interest in the country. Total gold production of the camp passed the million dollar a year mark in 1920 and increased in amount yearly until the advent of the second World War when there was a falling off due to labour shortage. The Kirkland-Larder camp ranks as the second largest gold producing area ' in Ontario. To the end of 1944, twenty-two mines in the area had produced bullion valued at $515,631,428 and ten mines had distributed dividends amounting to $205,981,116. The average grade of the ore milled in this period has been $15.17 a ton for the mines in the Kirkland Lake area and $6.49 a ton for the mines at Larder Lake.ROCK FORMATIONS OF THE AREAIn a general way the rocks of the country may be divided into the lithological groups indicated on the accompanying geological sketch map. This map has been compiled largely from recently issued geological sheets of the Geological Branch of the Ontario Department of Minest. Owing to the present difficulty of separating the formations of the Larder Lake country into the twofold age divisions of Keewatin and Timiskaming, the usual custom in the past, a lithological grouping of formations has been adopted. The age terms 'Keewatin and 'Timiskaming' are loosely used in this article to express the often used but not necessarily accurate distinction between the main groups of older strata."

"This paper has reference in a general way to the region extending from the north shore of lake Buron to the northern limit of the elliptical-shaped area generally known as the Sudbury Basin, and more especially to the district lying south of the Basin (Fig. 3). Attention is concentrated mainly on the structure of the district and, as space does not permit of much geological description, it is assumed that the reader has some knowledge of the general geology. "The Eustis mine, which was discovered in 1865, lies about 6 miles southwest of the city of Sherbrooke, Quebec, in lots 2, 3, and 4, range 9, Ascot tp. The mine was operated almost continuously from 1865 to 1937, under vanous owners.The ore was pyrite with varying amounts of chalcopyrite, a small amount of zinc blende and galena, and a low content in gold and silver. Parts of it ran quite high in copper, but the mine average would probably have been between 3 and 4 per cent. The high percentage of pyrite made it profitable to separate the ore into a copper concentrate and a pyrite concentrate. The latter was shipped away for manufacturing sulphuric acid, or was treated in a plant erected in 1887 at Capelton by the Nichols Chemical Company.The ore is a replacement of mica schist, which in turn was formed by the shearing of rhyolite flows. Ore also replaces the 'green rock', a term locally applied to carbonatized mica schists. The ore contained numerous 'horses' and smaller fragments of country rock, in all stages of replacement, ranging from those whose character was quite distinct to those whose ancestry could only be detected by an indefinite banding preserved in the sulphides."

"Gold occurs in Nova Scotia in three ways, saddle reefs, fissure veins, and fossil placers. Of these the saddle reefs are the commonest. They have been the source of most of the gold and have also been the subject of most of the literature on the gold occurrences.The Meguma or Gold-bearing series of Nova Scotia is a conformable succession of quartzite's and slates, possibly Precambrian in age, which have been folded into a number of anticlines and synclines that strike (Fig. 1) roughly east and west. This folding has been termed Acadian and is probably a westward continuation of the Caledonian revolution in Britain. It may have started in the Ordovician and continued through the Silurian and into the Lower Devonian. It was followed by the intrusion of the great Devonian granite batholiths. It is thought that the mineralization is connected with the late phases of the cooling of the granite. As the name saddle reef implies, the veins form on the crests and flanks of the anticlines, possibly in the synclinal troughs as well. The beds favoured by the solutions are the slates. The reason for this is apparent when it is realized that in order to fold over 30,000 feet of sediments (the thickness of the Meguma according to E. R. Faribault) through p radians of arc it is necessary to have a differential movement between the top and bottom beds of p times the thickness of the sediments. In the case of the Gold-bearing series, in which strong quartzite beds lie between incompetent slate beds, most of this differential movement was taken up in the slates. The evidence for this is the remarkably fine drag folding and the intense shearing and comminution of some of the beds of slate (Fig. 1). The quartzites exhibit some shearing and faulting, but there is little doubt that the greater permeability lay along the incompetent slate beds. The mineralizing solutions followed these beds and also passed from one slate bed to another through a joint or fault in the intervening bed of quartzite. These joining veins are called angulars in Nova Scotia. Within the veins the gold is in shoots and the real problem is to find out what controls the position and extent of the shoots."

"This paper deals with the corrosion characterization of quartz particlate ZA-27 alloy metal matrix composites (MMCs). Quartz particles of size 50-80 microns are used as reinforcement. MMC's are prepared according to ASTM standards. Composites containing. 2, 4, and -6% by weight of quartz and unreinforced matrix were tested using 1 -N hydrochloric acid: The composite was found to be more corrosive resistant than matrix alloy. In each test the corrosion resistance of both alloy and composites were found to decrease with the exposure time.1. IntroductionMetal matrix composites- (MMCs) offer designers many added benefits, as they are particularly suited for applications requiring good strength at high temperature, good structural rigidity, dimensional stability, and light weight 1-5. The trend is towards safe usage of the MMC parts in the automobile engine, which work particularly at high temperature and pressure environments Particles reinforced MMCs has been the most popular over the last two decades.ZA alloy MMCs have most popular families being represented by. ZA-27 alloy reinforced with ceramic particulate. Although the incorporation of the second phase into a matrix material can enhance the physical and mechanical properties of the base metal, it could also significantly change the corrosion behavior.ZA alloys have been used extensively in industry. This is attributed to their excellent fludity, castability and good mechanical properties. Among the zinc-based foundry alloys, the ZA family of alloy have been widely used during the past few years. "Based on solid simulation material research, the simulation conditions for methane and coal solid-gas coupling were obtained using solid-fluid coupling theory. Using sand as the aggregate and paraffin and oil as the cementing agents, a material suitable for solid-gas coupling simulation was developed. A permeability testing instrument was also developed, and the compressive strength, brittleness parameters and seepage velocity of material were tested with different aggregates. The results showed that as the paraffin content increased, the compressive strength of the material increased but the permeability decreased. The oil removed the drawback of intensely changing material compressive strength. By setting a different ratio of aggregate to cementing agent, it can simulate rocks with different strengths and permeability. Applying the material to a mining simulation experiment revealed a relationship between methane seepage velocity and overlying strata movement. By extracting pressure relief gas from Shanxi Tianchi coalmine drainage, the authors found that the mining fissure zone was a storage area of pressure relief gas, and a gas drainage system can be placed to achieve good results. OUR mineral-land laws need revising so as to provide definite title at the outset to the mineral deposits within any definite piece of land. The laws as they now stand, especially those applicable to lodes, breed uncertainty as to rights of possession prior to patent; and to my mind this is the worst feature of all, worse even than the apex bugbear. It is now almost impossible for anybody to tell with certainty what mineral rights exist within any area that is not covered y patent, or whether any valid rights exist at all. Our system is unique in permitting individuals to appropriate and exploit mineral lands of the public domain without notice of any kind to the Federal government, and to relinquish them without any ceremony at all. The result is a clouded record that cannot be cleared' up until each claimant is put to some sort of final proof. In order to accomplish this, new Federal legislation will be required. The requirements for a mineral survey and the proceedings for patent have always been cumbersome and expensive; and perhaps out of regard for the poor claim owner, who can ill afford the outlay for that sort of thing, the law does not require him to go through it unless he chooses to do so. Consequently, every active mining district has become encumbered with tangled groups of doubtful or conflicting locations, whose rights and boundaries, when any valuable ore is found, must usually be determined by lawsuits that are as expensive and as distressing as the stakes are high. So deeply has litigation entered into our mining system that a claim whose rights have never been disputed would probably be set down offhand, y a miner of the old school, as of no value. Think of the litigation over rights of possession on the Comstock lode-12 leading companies involved in an aggregate of 245 suits within a period of less than eight years! Ambiguous local records; the chance of erroneously placed or obliterated monuments; doubt as to the sufficient performance of the statutory annual labor; uncertainty as to prior conflicting or overlapping locations; anxiety as to the changing attitude of the Department of the Interior and the Forest Service-such considerations as these make an unpatented mining claim an unclean thing in the eyes of possible investors. The properties of top slags play a very important role in secondary steelmaking. Fluxes should be chosen based on the ladle furnace (LF) slag requirements like viscosity, melting temperature, sulfide capacity, etc. CaF2 and CaO-Al2O3-based synthetic slags are the most used fluxes in secondary steelmaking to improve slag fluidity and interfacial chemical reactions. CaF2 is obsolete due to fluorine pollution and CaO-Al2O3 based slags have 40–50 wt per cent Al2O3 and 30–40 per cent CaO which is not beneficial for desulfurisation. Yet another drawback is that LF slag disintegrates into fine powder during cooling due to phase transformation C2S (2CaO.SiO2). Hence, there is a need for the development of low melting fluxes with high CaO content and the capability to prevent slag disintegration. The current work studied the effect of 0–9 wt per cent B2O3 on physico-chemical properties and characterisation of LF slags. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses were carried out to identify mineralogical phases present in slag and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis was done to understand the changes in bonds of B2O3 added LF slag. The characteristic temperature of slag was determined by a hemispherical method using high-temperature microscopy. Empirical models were used to calculate viscosity, break temperature, and sulfide capacity. FactSage™, ver 8.2 (by GTT-Technologies) simulations were carried out to find the equilibrium phase fractions and percentage of liquid slag at different temperatures. New phases such as Ca11B2Si4O22 and Ca2B3O5 were formed in LF slag with B2O3 addition. Based on the results, 0.5–1.0 wt per cent B2O3 was found to be sufficient to prevent C2S-driven disintegration of LF slag. Also, the melting temperature and viscosity of LF slag were reduced by adding 3–8 wt per cent B2O3 due to the formation of BO3 planar triangular structure and low melting eutectics in slag. Liquid slag started forming at a temperature as low as 800°C when B2O3 is >6 wt per cent. It was found that the sulfide capacity, viscosity, and break temperature of the slag decreased with increasing wt per cent B2O3. Based on the analysis carried out, B2O3 can be a promising fluxing material in secondary steelmaking, for improving the desulfurisation kinetics and valourisation potential of LF slag.

Indian iron ores with less than 62 per cent Fe are currently unexploited, except for a few sectors which export them to foreign countries. It is anticipated that by 2012 the countryÆs domestic steel production is likely to rise to the tune of 60 million tonnes per annum. To meet this requirement, it is necessary to utilise not only the existing high-grade deposits but it is also necessary to look into exploiting the leftover iron ores of lower grades. Hence, reserves with Fe content 62 per cent and below (particularly the ores with In the present paper, an attempt has been made to beneficiate three different types of low-grade iron ores selected from three different parts (states) of the country. In the paper, alternative routes for beneficiation and effective utilisation have been tested using different techniques in the laboratory in an attempt to match their (Al2O3/SiO2) ratio after thorough characterisation and liberation studies. The paper also encompasses the geological formations, occurrences and distribution of Indian iron ores as well as highlighting the problems associated with the fines, possible metallurgical routes, and their market segregation from the perspective of end users.

The investigation of Noapara glass sand deposit in Sylhet district of Bangladesh is performed to beneficiate the sand for the manufacture of colourless glass. For the ease and efficient removal of the colour bearing impurities, the physical and mineralogical investigations of the sand deposits is carried out first. The sand is then treated with the standard beneficiation procedures to reduce the impurity level to an acceptable level. It is found that the Noapara glass sands are of medium grained and moderately sorted. They contain 0.15 - 0.30 per cent Fe2O3 and 0.001 -0.008 per cent Cr2O3 as major colour bearing impurities. The heavy mineral fractions containing most of the impurities can be grouped into five types of associations:stable or ubiquitous minerals (tourmaline, zircon, rutile); metamorphic species (staurolite, kyanite); amphibole minerals (hornblende, tremolite); the micas (muscovite, biotite); and discrete minerals (magnetite, ilmenite, etc). It is also seen that, the use of mechanical separation process in combination with water washing, attrition, and magnetic separation can remove a maximum of only 70 per cent of total Fe2O3 present in the deposits. This is insufficient to produce the specified grade of sand to manufacture colourless glass. Among the various chemical treatment processes used, sodium dithionite method is found to be the most effective, although the discrete minerals are not removed. Using the specific reagent group during froth flotation, the iron and chromium contents are reduced to 0.03 and 0.001 per cent respectively which are very near to the specified colourless glass composition.

At present, the friction factor is calculated by measuring pressure drop and airway configurations. However, the workload of on-site measurement is heavy, and the measurement results are easily disturbed by the external environment. In order to meet the need of intelligent ventilation to quickly and accurately obtain the friction resistance of roadway. Based on the important of roughness in Atkinson friction resistance formula, in this paper, fractal theory is used to characterise the 3D rough surface, and a method based on fractal dimension to describe the roughness of roadway surface and calculate the friction resistance was proposed. A computational model of friction resistance for fractal characterisation of roadway 3D rough surface was established. The parameters of the model were deduced and verified by using Nikuradse experimental data. The fractal dimension of roadway surface was calculated by 3D laser scanning data of Kailuan roadway, the established friction resistance calculation method was compared with the field resistance measurement results. It is considered that the calculation method of friction resistance based on fractal theory is reliable and can well represent the influence of 3D rough surface characteristics of roadway. The result show that the new established friction resistance formula compared with the traditional Atkinson formula in Nikuradse experimental, the average relative error is 6.874 per cent, and compared with the measured results of ventilation resistance in Kailuan experimental roadway, the relative error is 6.667 per cent. Comprehensive evaluation and analysis suggest that the new formula can well reflect the influence of 3D rough surface on friction resistance, combined with 3D laser scanning technology, the friction resistance of roadway can be calculated quickly and accurately. This research provided a reference for the key technology and theoretical development of intelligent ventilation parameter measurement.

An ilmenite ore from the Murray Basin was initially characterised using combined X-ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Electron Probe Microanalysis (EPMA) techniques. XRF analysis showed the ilmenite sample contained 58.7 wt per cent TiO2 and 26.2 wt per cent Fe2O3. Major impurities included: Cr2O3 (4.5 wt per cent), Al2O3 (2.7 wt per cent), SiO2 (1.9 wt per cent), Mn3O4 (1.5 wt per cent) and MgO (1.1 wt per cent). Manganese and magnesium were present as solid solution components within the ilmenite lattice while the elevated Al2O3 and SiO2 levels were due to separate aluminosilicate gangue minerals. Chromium was associated with discrete chrome spinel gangue phases of variable composition, (Fe,Mg)(Cr,Al)2O4. Quantitative XRD analysis of the sample identified rutile (12 per cent), ilmenite (11 per cent), and pseudorutile (67 per cent) as the main titanium-containing phases and chrome-rich spinels (seven per cent) as the major impurity phase. Minor quartz, aluminosilicates, zircon and monazite were also present. The ilmenite was mixed with synthetic graphite, pressed into pellets and reduced carbothermally in nitrogen at 1200 and 1400°C with C/O molar ratio of 1.2. Titanium oxide in the ilmenite was converted to titanium oxycarbonitride. Iron oxides were reduced to metallic iron. The Changes of impurities as a result of reduction was examined by SEM and EPMA analyses. Iron and chromium oxides within Fe-rich chromite were reduced to form a Fe-Cr-C alloy. Mg-rich chrome spinels were partly reduced at 1200°C. Zircon particles were not reduced at 1200°C, but were significantly reduced at 1400°C, with the particles becoming porous and the silicon being removed.

Many future and current block and panel caves extract ore from veined rock masses. These rock masses are composed of open joints forming blocks or rock with healed networks of veinlets. These two types of discontinuities pose a challenge for rock mass characterisation and classification due to difficulties in distinguishing actually open joints from healed but weak veins when diamond core drilling and excavation blasting practices disturb the rock mass. The inability of separating characteristics of open joints and healed veins has often resulted in an underestimation of the rock mass quality and as a consequence led to inappropriate assessments of rock mass response to mining (ie rock mass behaviour) and consequently deficient excavation stability assessments and ground support designs. In this paper, guidelines are provided to improve the characterisation and classification of veined rock masses. It is shown how veined rock masses can be mischaracterised resulting in often incorrect forecasting of rock mass behaviour. Following this, the classification of veined rock masses is examined. It is shown how the primary classification systems (ie Q – Barton, Lien and Lunde, 1974; rock mass rating (RMR) – Bieniawski, 1976) may not lead to reliable ratings in veined rock masses if care is not taken to differentiate between open joints and veins of varying strength. Examples are provided to illustrate how the Q and RMR systems are insensitive to veining. The Palaeo- to Mesoproterozoic McArthur Basin contains a thick (-10 km) intracratonic platform cover sequence of unmetamorphosed and relatively undeformed sedimentary and volcanic rocks (Pietsch et al, 1991). It covers an area exceeding 180 000 km2 of the North Australian Craton (Figure 1), overlying segments of the older deformed basement and transitional igneous units. Volcanism in the basin (including transitional domain) followed a four-phase pattern. These phases are geologically distinct and widely distributed, and are also recognised beyond the McArthur Basin in many similar-aged tectonic provinces in northern Australia. The four phases are described briefly below. Regional and structural nomenclature used refers to Figure 1. A stratigraphic correlation diagram is presented in Figure 2.

Brannerite is commonly referred to as a refractory uranium mineral as it is usually highly resistant to acid leaching. There is however widely varying literature data on brannerite leaching, with some studies reporting that brannerite leaching can be achieved under relatively mild conditions. The differences observed for brannerite leaching are most likely due to the high degree of variation in the composition and structure observed in natural brannerites. These aspects of brannerite chemistry however are not very well understood due to a lack of fundamental research. The aims of this study were to investigate and develop methods for synthesising brannerites of varying composition and to investigate the effects of composition on brannerite leaching in acidic conditions.

"The processing of gold ores with high silver contents can provide operational challenges, such as high cyanide consumption, retardation of gold leaching and competition during adsorption stages of carbon-in-pulp/leach/column (CIP/CIL/CIC) circuits. In particular, the silver, which is about 1.5% of the value of gold, competes with gold during carbon adsorption due to its higher concentration in many Ag-Au ores, potentially leading to gold solution losses. Fresh and partially fouled (barren and regenerated) activated carbons were evaluated at various Ag:Au ratios and total metal concentrations with regard to the adsorption kinetics and equilibrium loadings. Conventional Freundlich isotherms were found to be highly inaccurate for predicting equilibrium loadings in the competitive adsorption environment. An integrated model, which incorporates competitive adsorption kinetics with a modified competitive adsorption isotherm model has been developed and validated using plant and laboratory data. In panel caving in underground mines, it is essential to characterise and monitor the stress and stability state of production level pillars to ensure the extraction of the mineralised ore column and the safety of workers. Pilar Norte is a sector in the El Teniente mine that forms a pillar between the undercut fronts of the adjacent Esmeralda and Reservas Norte sectors. It exists in a high-stress environment, which may induce damage to the rock mass production pillars. Generally, numerical models are calibrated using observed damage in galleries. This procedure does not discriminate between the structural condition and/or the blasting damage effects. This paper proposes a technique that uses borehole cameras to measure stress-induced damage. This has the advantage of being at the intact rock scale, meaning that the effect of geological structures is negligible and the blasting damage factor is eliminated. Comprehensive geotechnical characterisation and tomography monitoring has been undertaken at Pilar Norte to describe and determine the rock mass behaviour of the production pillars. By combining analytical, empirical and numerical models, a correlation between the measured overbreak recorded by the borehole cameras and the stress level of the pillar was developed. Characterisation and Processing of Electronic Waste for the Recovery of Metal Values Electronic waste (e-waste), which is a hazardous waste, can indeed be a good source of metal values especially for Cu, Pb, Sn including the precious metals such as Au, Ag, etc. In the present work a protocol for sorting and disassembly of e-waste consisting of computers, TV sets and mobile phones, as well as the characterisation and processing are investigated. E-waste consists of assorted materials consisting of metals, plastics and polymers, ceramics and glass. These components are classified into nine categories. The components, in which metal is embedded into non-metallic base, require complete pulverisation for liberation of the metal. The liberation size is observed to be around 1 mm. Several stages of crushing, shearing and shredding and grinding are required to achieve the required feed size. It is evident from detailed chemical analysis that the pulverised particulate is quite rich in metal values. Computer waste has 23 per cent metal by weight with over six per cent Cu while TV waste has 20 per cent metal with about 4.5 per cent Cu. Mobile phones are much richer in metal content with about 56 per cent metal including 32 per cent Cu in it. Metal content is observed to be more significant in the larger size classes and Pb and Cd are found to be the major contaminants. Morphological studies show that a substantial fraction of the particles is flat or elongated. Based on detailed characterisation, a flowsheet is developed involving dry and wet methods to separate the metallic materials from the plastics physically. It is established that according to this flowsheet a metal rich fraction with over 90 per cent recovery of the metal values can be achieved. Considering the relatively inexpensive unit operations involved in the flowsheet it is envisaged that it would provide a commercially viable scheme for processing large tonnage of e-waste.

"The major ilmenite reserves are located in India at Chavara (CH), Manavalakurichi ( MK) and Chatrapur, Orissa (OR). India stands first in terms of ilmenite reserves, which are estimated to be 278 million tonnes out of which, 142 million tonnes are processable. Mineralo-chemical analysis shows that Chavara ilmenite is the most weathered one with about 60% TiO2 while Chatrapur is the least weathered with about 50% TiO2. Co-existence of ilmenite with pseudorutile, rutile and haematite is observed in substantially varying amounts in the three deposits. It is observed that the tropical weathering rather than the source rock difference has apparently played an important role in imparting major compositional and structural dissimilarities among ilmenites in different places.In processing of ilmenite through the Becher process, aeration rusting of pre-reduced ilmenite is found to be the rate limiting step thus, affecting the productivity of the process. Investigations have proved that the addition of some organic compounds such as glyoxal, sucrose etc., to the system accelerates the reaction to such an extent that the rusting time has been reduced to less than half.A new route of processing ilmenite for synthetic rutile has also been developed in which, ilmenite is carbothermally reduced and then processed through plasma route. The slag thus obtained is processed further to get high-grade synthetic rutile, metallic iron and high purity iron oxide. The process has been scaled up in a continuous moving bed plasma reactor. It is technologically and economically more viable where, all the iron values are recovered as salable byproducts. This paper describes the salient features of the technologies developed for the beneficiation of ilmenite to synthetic rutile."
