(Glen Summit Meeting, June, 1911.) I. THE CAMAGUEY DEPOSITS. 1. Location. THE Camaguey brown iron-ore deposit covers the top of San Felipe hill, the nearest point of which lies 14 miles NW. of the city of Camaguey. While there are several low flat-topped hills in the vicinity covered with a more or less continuous mantle of brown iron-ore, the deposit of San Felipe hill is the only one of any size and importance, and the name "San Felipe district " is proposed for the region. The deposit extends in a NW-SE. direction for a distance of about 10 miles, with an average width of 5 miles. The location is shown in Fig. 1, a sketch-map of the eastern part of Cuba. Fig. 2 is a map of the San Felipe district. 2. Description. The district is mentioned by Spencer,1 who says: "The Cubitas iron-ore fields are situated from 12 to 15 miles north of Camaguey City, in the province of Camaguey Within an area measuring roughly 10 miles east and west and 4 miles north and south, there are several flat-topped mesas rising 300 to 400 ft. above the level of an almost featureless plain which extends for many miles in all directions except toward the north." With the exception of the discrepancy in his statements as to the distance from Camaguey and the area of the hill, which is over 50 sq. miles, his description is a very good one. The hydrometallurgical technology for zinc production in Bulgaria is characterized by the use of considerable quantities of imported zinc concentrates and several kinds of Bulgarian ones which are quite different in chemical, phase and granulometric compositions. In this connection, 7 sulfide zinc concentrates (Bulgarian and imported ones) were investigated by chemical analysis, DTA, TGA, X-ray diffraction analysis, sieve analysis. The accomplishment of optimal mixing of concentrates and providing stabile mix composition for a long period of time of roasting in fluid bed furnace is a task of primary importance in the technological process control in zinc hydrometallurgy. This can be achieved using mathematical optimization methods.

Due to ongoing demand and increasing depletion of high-grade iron ore resources from large deposits, Australian iron ore producers are developing smaller size deposits to maintain current export levels. The iron grade, mineralogy, chemical and physical characteristics of iron ore fines being mined from different deposits vary considerably. It is therefore imperative to develop long-term strategies to maintain the quality and consistency of iron ore fines while moving to a larger diversity of smaller deposits. Blending is a common practice in sinter plants as it is almost impossible to produce a high performance sinter mixture displaying the required characteristics from one single ore. Blending is also one of the most effective options being used by iron ore producers to ensure the long-term stability of their products while increasing production. When designing a blend, the blend components are selected to support each other to achieve the required overall balanced metallurgical performance of the final product at a relatively low cost. To do so, a fundamental understanding of the key characteristics of iron ore fines and their potential impacts on the iron ore sintering process and sinter quality are required. In this paper, the sintering process and sinter structure have been analysed and the key factors affecting the sintering performance of iron ore fines, including productivity and quality, identified. Under fixed sintering conditions, the granulation efficiency, nuclei stability and the volume and properties of the primary sinter melt are believed to have important impacts on both sintering productivity and sinter quality. Discussion is then focused on the effects of ore chemical, physical and mineralogical characteristics on the key factors identified and in turn the consequences for sintering productivity and sinter quality.

When plotted as head vs. volume, fan curves start high and decrease with increasing volume, while mine head curves start low and rise with increasing volume. Their intersection is the system operating point. However, as every ventilation instructor knows, the fact that head loss is a negative number (debit) and fan head is an energy addition (credit) is often a stumbling block to student or audience comprehension since the curves seem to reflect the opposite. It is possible to use the intuitively correct curves- pressure losses as negative values and energy additions as positive values - and still obtain the correct operating point. Adding the two curves produces a third curve that intersects the x-axis at the operating point, the point at which the fan energy input exactly matches air circulation energy loss. Using this technique also makes it easier to account for outside influences on the system, such as natural ventilating pressure. With the standard approach, it is quite easy to add or subtract such influences to the wrong curve. This approach can be extended to the graphical solution of any series/parallel ventilation network. The results are the same, and the approach is logically consistent and less confusing.

This paper provided an overview of characteristics of limonite ores as well as their influence on sintering performance. Evaluation experiments focusing on basic characteristics, granulation characteristics, and high temperature sintering characteristics had been conducted by using two types of limonite ores, then the principles of high effective utilization technology of limonite ores were discussed, and the sintering pot tests were conducted. Limonite ores possessed low total iron content, high combined water content, high SiO2 content, large average particle size, low adhering particles proportion, high porosity, high water absorption rate, short water absorbing time, poor granulation ability, high melt formation ability, low melt fluidity ability, low melt penetration ability, high melt absorption ability, low bonding phase strength, and high forming ability of SFCA. By taking the technical measures of ore-proportioning optimization, increasing the proportion of burntlime and segmentation granulation, the usage of limonite ores could reach 50% in sintering.

For more cost effective strata control, a fundamental understanding of the behavior of the support system is needed. To assist in this understanding for shield supports, behavior of a four-leg shield design used on a soft floor in an operating longwall system is presented. The shield was constructed having a split base and a split caving shield. Attention is focused on other-than-normal loading on the canopy and its effect on deformation of the lemniscate links. Examples of the typical bending and twisting deformations are given. Schematics of the canopy, caving shield, and lemniscates showing important forces and moments are presented. Approximate minimum values of the forces and moments are calculated. The need for use of more inclusive three-dimensional design techniques is demonstrated.

The shield examined in this study was constructed having a split base and a split caving shield. Attention is focused on other-than-normal loading on the canopy and its effect on deformation of the lemniscate links. Examples of the magnitudes of typical bending and twisting deformations are given. Schematics of the canopy, caving shield, and lemniscates showing important forces and moments are presented. Approximate minimum values of the forces and moments required to produce the deformations are calculated based on the mechanical properties of the material. The need for use of more inclusive three-dimensional design techniques is demonstrated.

Longwall mine instrumentation for measuring abutment stress distribution, mining induced immediate roof stress change and deformation, and primary/secondary support loads and deformations provides critical guidance for the design of gateroad chain pillars and roof support. Field measurement results are also recognized as the best way to calibrate numerical models that have been used to study the failure and support mechanisms. International Conference on Ground Control in Mining (ICGCM) started in 1981 and since then, there were 26 papers published in the proceedings discussing the stress and load measurements as the face advanced using various field instrumentation techniques. The focus of this paper is on summarizing the analyses of the data published in these papers. Stress/load change monitoring included the following categories: gateroad chain pillar, abutment pressure, bolt load, and pre-driven recovery room. The data shows that the magnitude of stress changes as the face advances varies considerably from panel to panel and mine to mine. However, regardless of types of stress changes, pillar stress, abutment pressure, and bolt load, there exists a rough trend of stress increase as the face advances, generally consisting of three stages, i.e., stress/load (1) initially increases steady or slowly, (2) increases rapidly, and (3) increases reaching the peaks and dropping down slowly or sharply. The stress/load increases start earlier during the second panel mining and are larger than the first panel mining. This review makes it easy for the interested persons to find valuable data for other similar projects.

"Dry-lube has been used in Europe to enhance formability of aluminum sheet for automotive applications, but it is difficult to ensure degreasing performance with lower degreasing bath temperature. However, newly developed, highly lubricating pre-coats utilizing a urethane resin, which is soluble in water, have been found to show excellent degreasing performance. Furthermore, a richer pre-coat weight coincides with a lower friction coefficient and better formability. Combined use of anti-rust liquid oil showed different friction coefficient depending on applied surface pressure.INTRODUCTION The global demand for aluminum alloy products, especially for automotive application, has been increasing because aluminum alloys can offer excellent corrosion resistance with good strength and low density compared with steel. Aluminum alloys can contribute to saving much more energy and greenhouse gas emissions over the lifetime of the product. On the other hand, the amount of aluminum alloys in vehicle architectures is still somewhat limited due to relatively low formability. As a consequence of this low formability, it is necessary to set a certain limit to the shape of an aluminum alloy panel for automotive applications. So far hot melt wax dry lubricants have been in use especially in Europe as they have been recognized to provide better lubrication than conventional rust protection oils (Meiler & Jaschke, 2005). The benefit of hot-melt wax for automotive manufacturing is associated with a more stable forming process and the possibility to avoid extra lubrication in the press shop. But because of the low poorer solubility of hot-melt wax in degreasing aqueous bath solution, a higher degreasing temperature is required so that no remnant of hot melt wax can be carried over to the next manufacturing process. This temperature control is difficult to impress upon a manufacturing degreasing bath originally designed for liquid oil, especially in Japan. The typical temperature of degreasing bath in Europe is around 60°C, while it is only around 40°C. in Japan. Various types of pre-coats other than hot-melt with high lubricity have been reported (Tawara, 1993; Ueda, Hatsuno & Totani, 2013), but a balance between sufficient degreasing performance and high lubricity has not yet been achieved for an actual production process line."

The gold mining industry in South Africa stands to benefit much from the implementation of the self-directed work team concept. Its introduction implies flatter hierarchical structures, empowerment of the workforce and increased participation. Research indicates that half of the initiatives to implement self-directed work teams, however, fail, and it is therefore imperative for companies to be aware of the factors impacting on the effectiveness of self-directed work teams in order to focus on these early in the implementation phase. The objective of the study was to qualitatively determine these factors. Semi-structured interviews based on the phenomenological method were carried out. The sample included members of, and individuals involved with, self-directed work teams (N= 26) from a large gold mining company in South Africa. Results show that most respondents rated the availability of resources to do their work as the most important factor affecting their effectiveness.

The organic, inorganic, and radiological characteristics of airborne aerosols have been measured as a function of particle size in controlled atmosphere test chambers and operating uranium mines. Concentrations of benzo(a)pyrene in two mines ranged from 26 to 57 ng/m3 of air. The carbon chain length of adsorbed n-alkanes was correlated with particle size. Normal mining activities produced an ore dust aerosol with mass median aerodynamic diameter (MMAD) greater than 2 µm. The elements Na, Al, Si, K, Ca, Ti, V, Fe, and U exhibited elemental ratios similar to bulk ore and had comparable MMAD's. The S, Zn, and Pb were higher in aerosols than bulk ore and were associated with smaller MMAD particulates. Radon daughter particle size distributions were influenced by the kinds of particulates

Cathodic reduction of oxygen is a process involved in many fields. As is well known, the mechanism of oxygen reduction usually varies considerably with electrode substrates. In this paper, cathodic reduction of oxygen on gold electrode was studied by linear sweep voltammetry with regards to cyanide leaching of gold. As the results shows, the electron transfer number increases as potential shifted negatively and decreases as pH value increases. Besides, the increment of electron transfer number as a function of potential decreases when pH value increases. When pH increases to 13.0, the volt-ampere curve exhibits a relative flat section with currents approximate to the limit current density of a 2e process. By varying dissolved oxygen concentration, the electron transfer number was calculated for pH11.0 at different potentials, the results being 2.387e, 2.732e, 2.982e, and 3.227e at, -0.35V, -0.40V, -0.45V, and 0.50V, respectively. The calculated current densities are in good conformity with measured results.

The factors which control chimney subsidence sinkhole development in weak rock were assessed by analyzing the characteristics of approximately 3000 chimney subsidence features along the Colorado Front Range. The area of study included features developed over abandoned mines in the Colorado Springs Coal Field, the Boulder Coal Field, and the Foothills District. The approximate locations of the areas studied are shown in Figure 1. Data were collected for sinkholes occurring over both room and pillar, and retreat mining areas in coal seams with a wide range of dips. The location, size, and approximate time of development of each sinkhole were documented. From these data, relationships were developed which describe the time rate of observable sinkhole development and the relative location of sinkhole development with respect to mined height, overburden thickness, and type of mining for relatively flat-lying coal seams. In addition, the observed locations of sinkhole development over steeply dipping coal seams were assessed for portions of the study area.

Physical characteristics of possible importance in the acid leaching of Chrysocolla have been evaluated. Surface area studies and pore size distribution indicate: 1) a large surface area (350 m /gm); 2) an average pore size of 13 or 16 Å , depending upon use of the adsorption, or desorption, branch of the Type IV isotherm in the evaluation; ) the presence of a significant fraction of pores of size less than 15 Å determined by the accumulation surface area method. The initial structure is micro- crystalline on the basis of x-ray powder patterns; the silica leach residue is amorphous and has only 24 m2 /gm surface area, and loses integrity when dry. However, readsorption of copper onto the wet leach residue gives a product with integrity and 100 m2 /gm surface area. Visual observation of the leach residues supports evidence of a non-protective diffusion mechanism of leaching which is well correlated by the shrinking core model previously presented.

Blasting methods, dust-allaying procedures, location of mining cut with respect to bands of impurity, and the practice of discarding segregated impurities underground, all have an important bearing on the successful operation of surface cleaning units. The most important single characteristic of both coal and its associated impurities from the standpoint of cleaning is specific gravity. Other characteristics related in one way or another to the preparation , of coal are rank, petrographic composition, structure and hardness, and friability. These and still other coal properties are discussed in the first section of this chapter and impurity characteristics in the second. COAL CHARACTERISTICS RELATED TO PREPARATION Rank As a result of work done over a period of several years by committees of the American Society for Testing Materials and the American Standards Association, standard specifications are now available showing the 'classification of coals according to rank and quality of grade.' The term "rank" expresses the degree to which the original coal-forming material has been changed by metamorphism through successive stages from peat to anthracite. The characteristics of coal bumps are analyzed based on the microseismic data from No.8935 workface in Xinzhouyao coal mine, Datong Mining Group. The geology of this workface is characterized by the thick sandstone roof and coal seam, both with relative higher stiffness and strength. In order to investigate the mechanism and precursors of coal bumps occurred in No.8935 workface, the locations of microseismic, the relationship of microseismic energy and frequency and the spectrum of microseismic signals are analyzed. The result shows that the coal bumps in No.8935 workface were mainly induced by the seismic caused by roof failure. The coal pillar near the goaf is more easily to bump. The statistics results indicate that the coal bumps were mainly occurred in the gate road near the pillar, less than 50m ahead of mining face and located in the hard roof adjacent with coal seam. Moreover, the frequency, energy, b-value and frequency spectrogram of microseismic events were found to decrease before coal bumps. It was found that the frequencies of the microseismic events before coal bumps mainly concentrate upon 5~60Hz. The sudden decreasing of frequency and increasing of amplitude of microseismic events can be regarded as a precursor of coal bumps.

A coal burst is defined as the sudden, violent ejection of coal or rock into a mine opening. Coal mines in the North Fork Valley (NFV) of Colorado?s Gunnison River have a long history of coal bursts in a wide variety of settings. These have included longwall and room-and-pillar, development and retreat, and single- and multiple-seam mining. In contrast to other coalfields, where bursts are typically associated with strong, massive sandstone and extremely high stress, many bursts in the NFV have occurred beneath shale roof and some distance from the most highly stressed locations. The goal of this paper is to attempt a systematic study of the entire burst history in the NFV, in order to gain insight into their characteristics and causes. The primary sources of information are the reports of investigations conducted by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Roof Control Division over the past 15 years. This paper provides details on the geologic mapping conducted as part of these investigations, as well as a regional plot of burst locations using a Geographic Information System. The mapping indicates that many of the NFV bursts have been associated with structural features, including low-angled faults and well-defined zones of high-density jointing that exhibit little or no displacement. Some of these features appear to extend for several miles, impacting more than one mine.

This paper presents a brief picture of the quality of coal produced in Eastern Canada for use in thermal generating stations. It describes, in particular, the characteristics of coals burned in six power plants -two in New Brunswick and four in Nova Scotia. Each station is dis-cussed in turn, and comments are made on the coals used therein with regards to origin and physical and chemical properties affecting station operation. A table of coal data shows, at a glance, the wide variation in the quality of coals received by these stations from producers in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. "The promotion of improved coal quality for thermal generation can benefit our national economy." T HIS is the opening statement in a paper which was presented by Mr. D. A. Pirttinen at the Coal Division's Toronto meeting in April, 1960. In bringing the power engineer's viewpoint to the coal producers' attention, Mr. Pirttinen made a survey of utility steam plants operating in Canada, and the results of this survey formed the basis for his paper, which he titled: "Generating Station Coal Quality.
