Coal utilization for copper flash smelting in Japan was initiated due to the sudden upheaval in the price of oil in the last ten years. A major portion of the heavy fuel oil has already been replaced by coal resulting in a corresponding decrease in energy costs. In addition to energy cost savings, an interesting metallurgical phenomenon was observed in flash smelting operations. Unlike oil combustion, coal is not burned completely in the shaft. A considerable fraction of coal particles remain on the surface of slag and are burned at the settler. Chemical investigation has shown that oxygen potentials at the settler have consequently decreased, bringing the slag and matte phases into reducing conditions, thus oxidation and reduction can coexist in one flash smelting unit. As a result, a decrease in magnetite and copper contents in the slag, elimination of furnace hearth build-up and dissolution of intermediate layer between matte and slag have been observed. In general, these led to improvements of furnace operations. However, thermodynamic investigations have shown that some minor elements such as As, Sb, Bi and Pb concentrate from slag to matte. Results evaluated on the basis of thermodynamic data relatively agree with practical observa- tions. Consequently, for coal utilization in flash smelting operations it will be necessary to control oxygen potentials from the stand- points of copper loss in slag and minor element Distributions.

During the dissolution of gold in fully aerated cyanide solutions the CN ion is the active agent, and consequently the usual method of evaluating the dissolving power of such solutions is to determine the CN- concentration analytically. The presence in the solutions of copper and/or zinc which themselves form complex cyanides, may result in erroneous conclusions as to the free cyanide ion concentration determined by titration.In this paper the theory of titration of such solutions has been developed, and potentiometric methods have been used to follow the behaviour of complex cyanides of copper and zinc. The results for cuprocyanides show Cu (CN)s to be the most important copper complex, and in addition they explain the reported low rates of solution of gold in copperbearing solutions which when titrated in the usual way, appear to have adequate free cyanide. An explanation of the misleading value of the titration is given, and suggestions for recognition of the condition are offered. Preliminary results for zinc-bearing solutions show that there is no satisfactory end-point for the titration of CN- in excess of that in the complex Zn (CN) 4=, which dissociates to CN and Zn(CN)g-.

The addition of dolomite to iron ore pellets improves their high-temperature reduction properties primarily by increasing their reducibility and raising their softening temperature. In this study we prepared dolomite-fluxed pellets from three different concentrates; Hibbing, a magnetic taconite, Knob Lake, an earthy hematite; and Carol Lake, a mixture of specular hematite with magnetite. The composition n of the concentrates is given in Table I. The pellets were subjected to standard physical tests and the following reduction tests: low temperature degradation, swelling, softening, and thermogravimetric analysis. Petrographic examination and electron microprobe analysis allowed us to evaluate the effect of composition and firing on the phase assemblage. Further, we were able to interpret the test results in terms of chemistry and microstructure. This approach enabled us to determine which fluxed composition best suited each of the concentrates.

Dolomite-fluxed pellets of various compositions were made from magnetite concentrate, hematite concentrate and a concentrate containing a natural mixture of both. Physical properties and reduction test results were used to ascertain proper compositions and firing temperatures. These pellets were subjected to physical tests and to reduction tests. Petrographic and electron microprobe examinations were made to evaluate the effect of composition and fining on the phase assemblage. We interpreted our test results in terms of chemistry and microstructure and related these to properties. This approach enabled w to determine the composition best suited to each of the three concentrates. Compared with acid pellets, dolomite- fluxed pellets of the optimum compositions had similar physical properties but swelled less, softened at a higher temperature, and reduced faster and more completely.

Since its commercial in Australia at Broken Hill in the early part of the 20th century, the flotation process has grown to become the single most important minerals separation method available to mineral processing engineers. Statistics on flotation are impressive both in terms of growth of tonnages treated and in terms of the variety of separations accomplished. Because of the steady decline in the grade of ores and because many of the ores remaining are finely disseminated mixtures of minerals (many of them in a highly oxidized state) mineral processing scientists and engineers are now con- fronted with the problem of improving and modifying conventional flotation techniques so as to be able to effic- iently process these more refractory types of-ores. The flotation process did not come into being as the result of an intensive fundamental research effort but, in a similar way to so many other methods used in the processing of raw materials, it was developed over the years by the continued application of empirical methods. As a result, most of the basic research in this field has long been concerned with the problem of explaining why the existing process works so well. We are now at the stage where any further substan- tial extension of the flotation process will demand a more profound understanding of its fundamental principles. Hydrolyzable surfactants such as fatty acids and amines undergo, in addition to micellisation and precipitation, various associative interactions in aqueous solutions to form ionomolecular complexes such as acid-soap, dimers, etc., depending upon the solution conditions such as pH. The interaction of these collector species with the mineral surface and with other dissolved species in solution will play a significant role in determining the interfacial processes such as adsorption and flotation. Marked differences in the hydrophobicity imparted to the mineral surface depending upon the solution conditions such as pH can be attributed to possible differences in surface activities of the foregoing complexes. This aspect of solution chemistry of flotation system is discussed here for two widely used collectors, namely, oleic acid and dodecylamine. Equilibrium species distribution diagrams, based on the available literature data and on estimates of energy of interactions between molecules, have been obtained for oleic acid and dodecylamine solutions.

"Within the mining industry paste backfill technology has evolved over the last two decades. This technology aims at producing safe and cost effective backfill of high strength. When used as cemented backfill underground the usual practice in the mining operations was to consider the backfill as a component under the production engineer responsibility. With its growing use in various site conditions some problems were encountered. Over time the mechanical characteristics of paste backfill could deteriorate. Investigations on these problems brought an increased understanding of paste backfill chemistry. Effectively, paste backfill is produced with tailings slurry having sometimes very complex chemistry and mineralogy. The bonding agents can be sensitive to the chemistry of these slurries. Today, a new understanding of the complex chemical reactions involved in cementing paste backfill is derived from concrete research literature. Cemented paste backfill is a manufactured product and as thus all steps involved in its making must be looked at. Both the processing engineers and mining engineers need to be involved. The proposed paper will go over the various developments and new understanding gained over the years on paste backfill chemistry. The authors had the opportunity to work with various Canadian mines that implemented paste backfill in their operations. Chemical alterations case study will serve to illustrate the importance of a good understanding of cement and paste chemistry. The authors will then conclude on research orientations needed to bring a more efficient use of paste backfill technology. The crucial role of the processing engineers in the paste backfill manufacturing will be discussed.INTRODUCTIONPaste backfill is usually prepared from a mixture of solids and water containing at least 15% particles smaller than 20 microns with the addition of binders for mechanical strength. Historically, tailings had been classified to extract the fines and only the coarse part was placed underground as sand slurry. Paste fill was researched in the last three decades to enable mining operations to use all the tailings, including fines, in backfill. The outcome of the early studies showed that paste fill provides high strength but due to preparation complexities and transportation problems is expensive. A greater understanding of the transportation mechanisms and advances in dewatering technology in recent years has resulted in more practical use of paste backfill."

The Calsinter process for recovery from fly ash involves sintering the fly ash with calcium sulfate and calcium carbonate at 1200°C, followed by a dilute sulfuric acid leach step. Flue gas desulfurization sludge containing calcium sulfite, calcium sulfate, and unreacted calcium carbonate may be substituted for the calcium sulfate and calcium carbonate. Conversion of aluminum in fly ash by the sintering process to an acid-leachable species was measured as a function of sintering time and temperature in the range of 800°-1200°C The sinter-leach steps were investigated using thermogravimetric analysis, x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and elemental analysis. SEM photographs indicated that the glassy spheroids in the original fly ash were converted to a crystalline structure by the sintering reaction.

"Abstract - Diamond-drill hole DDH-B357, located 1.5 km north of the Brunswick No. 6 Zn-Pb- Cu-Ag volcanic-sediment-hosted massive sulfide (VSHMS) deposit, intersects three exhalative horizons within variably altered felsic volcanic rocks of the Nepisiguit Falls and Flat Landing Brook formations. These three petrographically indistinguishable iron formation intervals (Fe2O3T = 21.4 wt.%) likely represent cogenetic hydrothermal sedimentary units because they display a common geochemical signature: Fe2O3T = 42.9 ± 10.5 wt.%, MnO = 5.4 ± 3.1 wt.%, elevated base metal values (Zn+Pb = 1999 ± 1091 ppm), strong enrichment in additional exhalative components (CaO = 5.3 ± 3.9 wt.%; P2O5 = 1.43 ± 1.00 wt.%), oxidized signature (Fe/Mn = 10 ± 6), as well as a common immobile element signature (Zr/TiO2 = 0.025 ± 0.007) representative of a pelagic source. The calc-alkaline to transitional host volcanic rocks can be discriminated by Zr/TiO2, and to a lesser extent by Th/Nb: Nepisiguit Falls Formation: Zr/TiO2 = 0.053 ± 0.004, Th/Nb = 1.08 ± 0.37; Flat Landing Brook Formation: Zr/TiO2 = 0.107 ± 0.043, Th/Nb = 0.86 ± 0.17. A symmetrical repetition of the footwall-iron formation-hanging wall stratigraphic sequence is observed in DDH-B357, with distinct felsic volcanic rock domains separated by the three iron formations. This is best explained by parasitic F2 folds on the west flank of the south-plunging Brunswick antiform, similar to the fold closures known to host massive sulfide accumulations in the Brunswick No. 6 and No. 12 mines. Iron formation geochemistry and felsic volcanic rock chemostratigraphy from drill core sampling can provide an effective mineral exploration tool for the structurally complex rocks of the Bathurst Mining Camp. "Abstract - The Eel River area in the southwestern Miramichi terrane of New Brunswick contains a complete calc-alkaline suite of volcanic rocks that are interlayered with intervals of sedimentary and polylithic fragmental rocks, and are overlain by a thick sedimentary sequence. This package, collectively referred to as the Meductic Group, was deposited in a submerged volcanic arc setting interpreted to be part of the Popelogan arc. Rifting of this arc led to the development of the Tetagouche-Exploits back-arc basin, and formation of volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits in bimodal volcanic rocks of the Bathurst Mining Camp in the northeastern Miramichi Terrane. Unlike the Bathurst Mining Camp, volcanic rocks in the southeastern Miramichi Highlands form a continuous calc-alkaline suite characterized by increasing Zr/TiO2 with increasing SiO2, in part resulting from progressive coupled assimilation and fractional crystallization of nested magma systems. Slumping of semi-consolidated volcanic and sedimentary rocks in topographically unstable areas resulted in numerous slumps and debris flows that are preserved throughout the Eel River area. In the early 1990s, the discovery of a large sulfide clast in a road cut along the Benton road sparked interest in the volcanogenic massive sulfide potential of the Eel River area. Subsequent drilling intersected smaller fragments, one clast of which graded 16.7% Zn, 5.6% Pb, 90 ppm Ag, and 220 ppb Au. The intersection of thin lenses of stratiform sulfides in another drillhole indicates favorable conditions for the preservation of massive sulfides. Their subsequent incorporation into synvolcanic debris flows resulted in the transport and deposition of sulfide clasts from hydrothermal vents to more distal locations. Similar to the Buchans deposits of Newfoundland, tracing these debris flows back to their source would be beneficial from an exploration perspective. Approximately 15 km to the southwest of the Eel River area, gold-bearing base metal sulfide clasts (11.1% Zn, 6.13% Pb, 0.19% Cu, 108 ppm Ag, and 1100 ppb Au) occur within intermediate-composition volcanic rocks at Monument Brook in eastern Maine. Contrairement au Camp Minier de Bathurst, les roches volcaniques des hautes terres du sud-est de Miramichi constituent une suite calco-alcaline continue caractérisée par un accroissement du rapport Zr/TiO2 à des valeurs croissantes de SiO2, résultant en partie de l’assimilation progressive et de la cristallisation fractionnée de systèmes magmatiques superposés. L’effondrement de roches volcaniques et sédimentaires semi-consolidées dans des secteurs topographiquement instables est à l’origine des nombreux slumps et coulées de débris qui sont préservés dans le secteur d’Eel River. Au début des années 1990, la découverte d’un large claste de sulfures le long de la route Benton provoqué un intérêt pour le potentiel en gisements de sulfures massifs volcanogènes dans les secteur d’Eel River. Des forages ont par la suite recoupé des fragments plus petits, dont un claste qui a retourné des teneurs de 16.7% Zn, 5.6% Pb, 90 ppm Ag et 220 ppb Au. Le recoupement de minces lentilles de sulfures stratiformes dans un autre forage indique des conditions propices à la préservation des sulfures massifs."

ChemSheet is a thermodynamic multi‐phase multi‐component simulation software, which is used as an Add‐in in Microsoft Excel. In ChemSheet, the unique Constrained Gibbs free energy method can be used to include dynamic constraints and reaction rates of kinetically slow reactions, yet retaining full consistency of the multiphase thermodynamic model. With appropriate data, ChemSheet models can be used to simulate reactors and processes in all fields of thermochemistry. The presentation will cover off‐line modeling of Cu‐flash smelters and advanced thermochemical simulation coupled with on‐line process control of Cu‐Ni smelting. The presentation will describe an off‐line model of Cu‐smelter based on critically assessed properties of the Al-Ca-Cu-Fe-O-S-Si –system (slag, matte and liquid metal) by using the quasichemical model. A four‐stage reactor model (shaft, settler, uptake and bath) is used for optimizing process parameters and feed particle distribution. As a second example, an advanced thermochemical model of a Ni-Cu sulphide smelting plant will be given. The on‐line model covers the operation of treating Ni-Cu-S concentrate via roasters, electric furnace and converters, producing a high grade Bessemer matte product for further refining. The model integrates the thermochemistry of the roasters and electric furnace, and predicts important process parameters such as degree of sulphur elimination in the fluid‐bed roasters, matte grade, iron metallization, slag losses and the iron to silica ratio in the electric furnace slag. Both models can be used to assist process engineers and operators in calculating the addition rates of coke, flux and air for different feed scenarios.

THE Kingsport formation, a part of the Knox dolomite of Ordovician age, is composed of 538 ft of dolomite and limestone. Numerous bands, layers and nodules of chert, arenaceous and shale zones are present. The characteristics displayed by these features have been useful in mapping, prospecting and mining. Perhaps a better understanding of the origin of these zones will increase their usefulness.

THE history of the production of sulfur from salt domes in Louisiana and Texas originated with the operations of the Union Sulphur Co. at Sulphur, La., followed by the Freeport Sulphur Co. at Bryanmound, Tex. Including the present development of Grande Ecaille by the Free-port Sulphur Co., which constitutes the tenth dome to be equipped for the production of sulfur in the Gulf Coast, less than 10 per cent of all the known domes have proved to contain sulfur in commercial quantities. The Grande Ecaille salt dome is in the tidal marsh of the Mississippi River delta in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana. It is 10 miles southwest of the right descending bank of the river approximately 45 miles below the city of New Orleans and is within 4 miles of the shore line of the Gulf of Mexico.

Ground, air, and water vehicles can expose humans to substantial multi-axis vibration. Multiple input/multiple output relationships or models exist for estimating frequency response functions of linear systems1, 2. These relationships have been applied by some investigators to evaluate the effects of occupied seat vibration3, 4. Using a multiple input/single output model, this study investigated the effects of single- and combined-axis vibration in the fore-and-aft (X), lateral (Y), and vertical (Z) directions on vibration transmission to the human chest. Frequency response functions (transmissibilities) were estimated and compared for the back-on and back-off postures. Methods A rigid seat with seat back was mounted onto the Six Degree-of-Freedom Motion Simulator (SIXMODE). A flat acceleration vibration signal was generated between 2 and 40 Hz at 1.0 ms-2 rms in the single and combined X, Y, Z, XY, XZ, YZ, and XYZ axes. The signals were shifted in time so that the combined inputs were not fully correlated. Lightweight triaxial accelerometers were used to measure accelerations at the seat base (input) and at the bony manubrium of the chest (output). The maximum of nine frequency response functions (H(?)) or transmissibilities were estimated from the auto- and cross-spectra. The system transfer matrix for the XYZ inputs and chest Z output is [ ] where PxZ, PyZ, and PzZ are the cross-spectra between the three inputs at the seat base and the Z output at the chest, respectively, and Pxx, Pxy,…zz are the auto- and cross-spectra between the input signals (? not shown in Eq. 1). Equation 1 can be similarly written for the chest X and Y outputs. Matlab® was used to estimate the auto- and cross-spectral densities for calculating the transmissibilities, ordinary coherences (for single inputs), partial coherences, and multiple coherences. Results Figure 1 illustrates the major chest transmissibilities observed for the two postures. Vertical vibration showed a consistent influence on the chest X response (Chest X/Z), most likely causing chest pitch. Some chest Z responses were observed with X-axis inputs, but the results were variable and difficult to interpret. "The property of Chesterville Mines, Limited, is in McGarry township, Timiskaming district, Ontario, about 25 miles east of Kirkland Lake. It consists of a group of fifteen claims that extend northeast from the KerrAddison mine for a distance of 2 miles.In June, 1906, two groups of prospectors left the town of Chesterville, Ontario, to prospect in northern Ontario. Silver had been discovered 3 years before at Cobalt and the large profits of this young mining camp were the principal incentive to extending the field of exploration northward. One group consisted of Dr. Reddick, Edward Flynn, John Hummel, William Knott, and Colin Cameron. The other group comprised J. T. Kearns, Herman Hummel, W. G. Barkley, and J. Elliott.The two groups travelled north by train to Haileybury and thence to Larder lake by canoe. Camps were pitched on the northeast arm of the lake, and within a short time a discovery was made by Edward Flynn of the first party, who found gold on the property now owned by Kerr-Addison Gold Mines, Limited. Herman Hummel and J. T. Kearns shortly afterwards made the second discovery, on what is now the Chesterville property. These discoveries, made some years prior to those at Porcupine and Kirkland Lake, are believed to be the first in that part of northern Ontario.The Hummel-Kearns claims were incorporated in the following year under the name of Chesterville Larder Lake Gold Mining Company, Limited. It was not, however, until 30 years later, in 1936, following the increased premium on gold, that sufficient capital was placed in the treasury of the Company to carry out an extensive diamond drilling programme. This exploratory drilling was started early in 1937 under the direction of Leo. J. Kearns, and a large body of ore was intersected in the first drill hole. Underground work was started in 1938, a mill was built, and the first gold brick was poured on July 29th, 1939."

In a little over three years, Chevron Niugini has built up a team of relatively young, hard working men and women, mostly Papua New Guineans, who spend most of their working days out among people in the Southern Highlands and Gulf Provinces who are directly affected by the Kutubu Petroleum Development Project. These are Land and Community Relations officers, or LACROs. They take on a huge responsibility, not only representing Chevron but also being friend, advisor and negotiator, frequently dispensers of medicines, and agricultural advice and more. When things go well, others get the praise, when things go wrong, LACROs are the martyrs.
