"SWOT analyses and the closely related TOWS matrix are frequent starting points for an organization to develop its strategy. The paper deals with the evaluation of the TOWS matrix and presents three novel approaches to evaluate the different factors of the TOWS matrix, namely (1) approach to evaluate the factors with identical weights; (2) approach to evaluate factors with their weights determined within the different quadrants of the TOWS matrix; and (3) approach to evaluate factors with weights determined within the whole TOWS matrix. The third approach has two variants. The proposed approaches to evaluate the TOWS matrix were tested on a SWOT analysis of a significant mining company in the Czech Republic. The results imply that the strategy W-T (weaknesses-threats) is recommended in three cases, while the strategy S-T (strengths-threats) is recommended once. The paper may be valuable for managers responsible for strategic planning.IntroductionThe process of human needs gratification has been closely connected with raw material resources of the planet. In the contemporary socio-economic conditions, the task of the mining company managers, apart from extracting mineral resources, is to meet the owners' intents.The managerial work itself becomes very complex. In mining companies in particular, the complexity is augmented by the characteristics of the business. Undoubtedly, the key factor is that mineral resources cannot be renewed or relocated. Stojanovi (2013) characterizes mining projects as involving great investments in finance and time, as well as consecutive decisions and a 'complex mosaic of numerous unknown factors that affect the value of the project'. He adds that mining projects are typified by a 'number of geological, technological, technical, economic, environmental, social, and financial risks' (Stojanovi , 2013).Inter alia, the managerial work may also be intese due to the dynamic internal and external conditions for the existence of any company (Vane? k, 2014). This tallies with Peter Drucker’s prediction in 1969; that the times at the turn of the millennium could be expected to be turbulent (Drucker, 1969)."

"A renewed interest in nuclear power around the world in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is going to increase demand for uranium as fuel. This will result in more uranium being mined, which will in turn increase associated environmental pressures, such as fresh water use. A move to lower quality waters containing impurities such as chloride would help alleviate these pressures. In this work, we determined the uptake characteristics of weakly basic anion exchange resin Ps-EDA towards uranium from saline solutions in a dynamic flow column. Breakthrough curves were produced, with suppression of uptake being observed for chloride concentrations above 5 g L-1. Calculated resin saturation capacities at zero and 5 g L-1 chloride are comparable with literature values for strong-base anion exchange resins, and exceed those published for weak-base resins up to 20 g L-1 chloride. Data has been fitted to multiple breakthrough models, with the modified dose-response model most effectively predicting uranium recovery. The results show that the ethylenediamine functionality could be suitable for use in future uranium processing flow sheets where a high-saline lixiviant is used. IntroductionIon exchange (IX) is a key technology in the uranium mining industry and is well established for the extraction of uranium from both acidic and alkaline leach liquors (Edwards and Oliver, 2000). It was first employed in 1952 at the West Rand mine in South Africa (Ford, 1993; Taylor, 2016). H2SO4 and Na2CO3 are the most commonly employed lixiviants used to solubilize uranium in acidic and alkaline leach conditions respectively. The chemistry of these systems causes uranium to form anionic sulphate or carbonate complexes, which can be taken advantage of by anion exchange resins.Another major technology for the extraction and purification of uranium from leach liquors is solvent extraction (SX). This technique involves the extraction of uranium from the aqueous phase into an immiscible organic layer. Although this is a commonly used method, there are major drawbacks to it, including the use of large volumes of flammable solvents, solvent loss, phase disengagement, third phase formation, and the production of problematic degradation products (Veliscek-Carolan, 2016). These problems can be circumvented through the use of IX resins."

"Prereduction and flux-aided direct reduction of chromite provide significant advantages in reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions during ferrochrome production. In this investigation, a comparative evaluation of the influences of several alkali fluxes was carried out based on experimental observations supplemented by advanced material characterization and thermodynamic predictions. Direct reduction of a chromite ore with alkali fluxes at 1300°C for 1 hour produced (Cr,Fe)7C3 type alloys with Cr/Fe mass ratios from 0.7 to 2.3. Among the alkali fluxes, reduction aided by NaOH resulted in a high degree (85%) of Cr metallization with the ferrochrome alloy being Cr4.2–4.6Fe2.4–2.8C3. The formation of liquid slag, which facilitated Cr metallization, was limited by the formation of NaAlO2 between 800 and 1300°C. This, in turn, restricted the collection and transport of the charged ionic Cr species (i.e. O2–) to graphite particles. Under the conditions studied, ferrochrome particles were often small and largely unliberated, which would make the physical recovery of ferrochrome challenging. At 1400°C, the amount of liquid slag increased, enabling the growth of alloy particles. Direct reduction of chromite aided by NaOH is promising as an alternative technology to conventional flux-based smelting in electric arc furnaces. IntroductionConventional smelting processes are energyintensive (Riekkola-Vanhanen, 1999) with the energy requirements greater than 4 MWh/t (Naiker and Riley, 2006; Beukes, van Zyl, and Neizel, 2015), and the greenhouse gas emissions can be significant, exceeding 10.5 t CO2 per ton Cr in ferrochrome produced (International Chromium Development Association, 2016). These include emissions occurring on-site (smelter), emissions due to electricity production, and emissions due to upstream processes. Overall energy requirements are influenced by the degree of prereduction and smelter charge temperature. Significant reduction in electricity consumption can be realized if the charge is prereduced before feeding to the submerged arc furnace (Niayesh and Fletcher, 1986). This consideration has led to the development of several prereduction technologies, with the most important example being the Premus process. In comparison to the conventional smelting processes, this prereduction process lowers the overall energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by about one-third (Naiker, 2007)."

"Low-cost calcium lignosulphonate (CL), which is a byproduct of the wood pulping industry, was investigated as a potential binder during laboratoryscale pelletization of inertinite-rich high-ash coal fines from the Highveld Coalfield of South Africa. Coal-binder mixtures containing between 1 and 15% calcium lignosulphonate were prepared, pressed, and ultimate, proximate, porosity, XRD, and XRF analyses obtained. It was found that increased pressure during pelletization results in increased attractive forces, due to increased interparticle contact areas. FTIR analysis showed that chemical interactions occur between coal fines and the binder, as evidenced by the formation of new C-O ether-type bonds. The presence of moisture during pelletization enhanced surfactant activity of the binder. Chemical interactions between the coal and the binder seem to be mainly electrostatic, driven by Ca2+ from the calcium lignosulphonate, which may act as a bridge between the anionic parts of the binder and the surface of the coal. IntroductionCoal has over the years remained South Africa’s major energy source, with over 90% of the country’s electricity being produced via coal-fired processes (Arndt et al., 2016). Sasol’s coal conversion technology alone provides more than 40% of South Africa’s liquid fuel requirements (van Dyk, Keyser, and Coertzen, 2006). The production of high-grade coal requires the processing of run-of-mine (ROM) resources by a combination of processes which include crushing, screening, and washing (Radloff, Kirsten, and Anderson, 2003). These processes result in the generation of coal fines (< 0.5 mm) which, until recently, have been discarded into slimes dams (le Roux, Campbell, and Smit, 2012). Several issues are associated with slimes dams, among which are the costs of transportation of these fines from the place of origin to the discard point (often a considerable distance), and the potential environmental effects due to seepage of toxic materials into surrounding ecosystems (Clausen, 1973).Consequently, utilization of these coal fines is an area of great interest. Mechanical densification of fine coal by means of pelletization and/or briquetting to larger sizes for use in technologies that require lump coal, such as chain-grate stokers and fixed-bed gasifiers, has been shown not only to reduce environmental risks (Mangena et al., 2004), but also to significantly reduce storage and transportation costs (Mani et al., 2001). Pelletization is the process by which solid particles are consolidated into uniform, usually hard, impact-resistant agglomerates, rendering them useful as a fuel with sufficient calorific value for domestic and industrial utilization (Finney, Sharifi, and Swithenbank, 2009)."

"The high virgin horizontal in situ stress field in the Sydney Basin and its impact on civil engineering projects is a well-known and accepted phenomenon found in significant literature (e.g., Pells, 2013). The prevailing high-stress effects depend on many factors — rock quality, tunnel orientation, proximity of geological features to tunnel crown, size and shape of opening, depth of excavation and stress magnitude. The behavior of the rock mass under high in situ stress conditions can cause stress fracturing and consequent dilation of the tunnel periphery, resulting in rock spalling at the tunnel crown/ invert or raveling of rock blocks on the tunnel sidewall. This type of failure is of a brittle nature and may create construction and safety risks during tunnel excavation, if it occurs behind the excavation face where ground support has already been installed. Therefore, the associated risks need to be managed during construction. This paper presents the design strategy adopted to mitigate these adverse tunneling conditions for the WestConnex Project to-date. Overview of the WestConnex M4 East and new M5 tunnel projectsWestConnex is one of the New South Wales government’s key infrastructure projects. This 33 km (20.5 mile) project aims to ease congestion and connect communities and is the largest integrated transport and urban revitalization project in Australia. It was a key recommendation of the State Infrastructure Strategy released in October 2012. It brings together a number of important road projects, which, together, form a vital link in Sydney’s Orbital Network. These road projects include a widening of the M4 east of Parramatta, a duplication of the M5 East, and new sections of motorway to provide a connection between these two key corridors. The WestConnex project includes a number of stages: Stage 1a: M4 Widening; Stage 1b: M4 East; Stage 2: New M5; and Stage 3: M4–M5 Link. The tunnel design referenced in this paper relates to Stage 1b and Stage 2 of the WestConnex Project (Fig. 1)."

"The Northgate Link Extension project is the third phase of the Sound Transit master plan to extend light rail throughout the greater Seattle metropolitan area. When completed, the Northgate Link Extension will extend the existing light rail system north by about 7 km (4.3 miles) from the University of Washington to the Northgate neighborhood. A general overview of the project alignment is provided as Fig. 1. The project was funded by a combination of federal grants and allocations from local taxes. The general contractor on the project was JCM Northlink LLC (JCM), a joint venture between Jay Dee Contractors, Frank Coluccio Construction Company and Michels Corp. SoilFreeze, Inc. was retained as a subcontractor to provide ground freezing design and construction services.The project involved the construction of two parallel 5.5-m, 25-cm (18-ft, 10-in.) (inside) diameter tunnels using earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machines (TBM) and precast segmental concrete tunnel liners. The two tunnels maintained roughly the same elevation along the alignment and were spaced roughly 12 m (40 ft) apart (centerline to centerline). A total of 23 cross-passages connecting the two tunnels were included at approximate 244-m (800-ft) intervals. Cross passage excavations were elliptical in shape with dimensions of approximately 5.6 m (18.5 ft) in height and 5.3 m (17 ft) in width. The cross-passages were 5.8 to 6.1 m (19 to 20 ft) long as measured between the exterior of the tunnels at springline elevation. Cross passages were intentionally located directly beneath public right-of-ways thus avoiding buildings. Many of the cross passages were located beneath narrow roads in residential neighborhoods with mature vegetation, existing utility structures and piping and limited parking areas. Excavation and support for each cross passage was completed using the sequential excavation method (SEM).The subsurface soil and ground water conditions at the cross-passage locations were described in the Northgate Link Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) prepared by Jacobs Associates and the Northgate Link Geotechnical Data Report (GDR) prepared by Shannon and Wilson, Inc. Soils along the project alignment were glacially overridden and characterized as very dense or hard. Subsurface soils consisted of cohesionless sand and gravel (CSG), cohesionless silt and fine sand (CSF), cohesive clay and silt (CCS) and till and till-like deposits (TLD)."

"Pumping backfilling medium used to fill in holes and caverns in mines is challenging. The often viscous, high solids materials are extremely abrasive and can destroy pumping systems in a matter of days. While a number of options are available, using a progressing cavity pump can often be the best solution. High pressure and capacity capabilities, coupled with low wear rates, ensures reliable cost effective operation.Thickened slurry backfilling for underground/excavation mining applicationsVoids and caverns develop as a result of mining operations penetrating deep into the earth seeking natural resources. After extracting all the ore from a mine, operators need to fill in these voids to preserve the integrity of the mine structure. They do this by pumping in a backfill medium. Each mine uses a different mix of components for backfilling, depending upon the mine’s specific structural requirements and environmental concerns, particularly water requirements. Most backfill mixes contain cement, or another cement-like substance, that acts as a binder to hold the backfill medium together. This is combined with tailings (unused rocks and waste from processing and/or extraction), and may also include chemicals or other binders to increase the material’s strength.Backfill pumping challengesPumping the backfilling medium can be a significant undertaking. This process involves transporting very viscous and high solid materials; the mix may contain 60-80 percent solids. These backfill slurries are extremely abrasive and the viscous material can wreak havoc with pumping systems. The material’s paste-like consistency presents problems for standard centrifugal pumps often used in other mining applications.Added complexity is posed when trying to achieve the required pressure, which depends upon how far away the material has to be pumped. It is not difficult to meet the pressure requirements if mixing the backfill material close to the area to be filled. However, pumping from extreme distances can be problematic — a great deal of pressure is required to transport the material from the mixing area to a distant backfilling site. Ideally, operators should be as close as possible to where they are filling, so they can use a smaller pump with lower power requirements."

"“Safety Pays in Mining” web application developed by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Mining Program, helps mines determine the potential costs associated with mining injuries. This web app groups injuries by type, either by the cause of the injury or by the nature of the injury. When the user selects one of more than 30 common types of mining injuries, the app provides information on the distribution of costs of workers’ compensation claims for that type of injury. Based on other user inputs, the app will estimate the total costs of the selected injuries, including an estimate of additional indirect costs, the estimated impact of total injury costs on mining company profits, and provide some examples of other items, such as services or equipment, on which companies could spend the savings that result from the prevention of injuries. This paper reviews the app by discussing its development, how it is used to show the true costs of mining injuries, and how mines can benefit from using it.IntroductionInjuries on the job cause pain and suffering. They can also profoundly affect profits and daily operations. In addition to paying direct costs or increased premiums for workers’ compensation insurance, a company might need to pay overtime for other workers to fill an injured worker’s job role, cover training costs for a replacement worker or divert administrative resources in the wake of an injury. “Safety Pays in Mining” is a web app that estimates the distribution of these injury costs and assesses the impact that occupational injuries have on a company’s profits.The costs of specific types of occupational injuries in mining are not readily available as mining and insurance companies do not usually share this information. As a consequence, companies only have cost information based on previous experience with their own employees. Therefore, if a mine never experienced a finger amputation for one of its miners, for example, it would not be aware of the possible costs associated with this type of injury. In addition, injury costs are unique in that the cost distribution is so wide that just using the average cost of a specific injury type does not provide adequate information. Some injuries involve immensely high costs, and even though the risk of these high-cost injuries occurring is low, mines need to be aware of the potential impact on their company’s financial health."

"Mine monitoring through various sensors is a vital component of successful miner safety and health programs. Data from environmental, geotechnical, infrastructure and other types of sensors are increasingly used to discover and mitigate health and safety concerns in underground mines. In many smaller underground mines, as well as in the new development headings of larger underground mines, leaky feeder communication systems may be the only available means to transport crucial monitoring data. In addition, data transport is increasingly being delivered using Internet Protocol (IP), while older forms of serial communication are being retired. This paper presents the selection, configuration and testing methodologies employed by researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to integrate commercially available land mobile data radios into an existing leaky feeder communication system to provide IP data transport.IntroductionTo enhance the health and safety of their mining workforce, mine owners and operators are increasingly installing environmental monitoring and control systems in underground mines. Real-time, mine-wide monitoring is becoming a reality with the implementation of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) into the underground mining industry (Zhou et al., 2017). However, not all underground mines, especially smaller mines and new development headings in larger mines, have the information technology infrastructure in place to handle the data transport requirements for the newer Internet Protocol (IP)-based technologies that are part of IIoT.This was the case with a mine in the Western United States. It lacked the infrastructure to perform critical monitoring in remote headings. Therefore, the mine partnered with the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) to develop and evaluate a cost-effective solution for the real-time monitoring of geotechnical conditions in relatively remote sections of the mine. This paper describes SMRD’s solution to leverage the mine’s existing leaky feeder communications system to achieve IP data transport using commercially available land mobile data radios (NIOSH, 2013; Forooshani et al., 2013; Novak, Snyder and Kohler, 2010; Yarkan et al., 2009). The solution, fully evaluated in laboratory and mine environments, requires no modifications to the existing system, is economical, simple to implement, and reliable. It also allows for transition to higher-bandwidth IT networks, such as fiber optic or WiFi, should they become available."

Rockfalls or significant deterioration of mine openings can have significant safety and financial impacts for mining operations. The failure of drives in underground mines sometimes highlight deficiencies in the mine risk management systems in detecting geotechnical hazards and to prevent events that can have significant impact. Consequences from these failures includes fatalities, injuries, loss of revenue, additional cost, and potentially a loss in Ore Reserves. Where the impacts are severe, it also affects families and communities linked to the operation. The assessment of underground excavations requires consideration of the full range and spectrum of geotechnical hazards, design aspects, ground support, layouts and sequences. Where the assessment of these are insufficient or incorrect, it can result in drive failures. Care must be taken that meeting production targets and personnel pressures do not result in a situation where production take preference over a proper risk-based assessment of the drives to be mined. The risk management approach is now widely accepted in the mining industry for the control and management of risks in underground mines. Codes of Practices (COP’s), Ground Control Management Plans (GCMP), Principal Hazard Management Plans (PHMP’s) and technical guidance documents has become the norm for describing the mines main hazards, risk levels and intimating controls for safe passage of vehicles and mine personnel. However, where there is a disconnect between these documents and what is actually being done at the mine site, the COP’s and/or Management Plans become ineffective (or vice versa). This disconnect may occur due to the actual content of these documents, a lack of resources, or a lack of understanding about the implementation. There is therefore a need for sites to have a documented and implemented risk-based approach for assessing underground mine development. This approach or system needs to identify all hazards and other factors affecting mine development stability early on in the design process, and outline the risk classification and controls required. An extensive trial of laser-based survey and monitoring systems at Hillgrove Resources Kanmantoo Copper Mine in the Adelaide Hills, South Australia, has proved the capabilities of the system in monitoring rock movements on open pit walls. Initially, the trial involved deploying a Maptek I-Site 8820 laser scanner and the proof-of-concept Maptek Sentry software in the Nugent Pit to monitor ductile rock movements located up to 260 m away. The system was proven to be capable of monitoring various rock movements from 1.5 tonne rockfalls up to a 40 m high toppling wall failure. Data collected from smaller rockfalls was used to help build a database for Hillgrove’s rockfall management program. As part of the trial, the laser scanner was deployed to monitor a ramp movement event, as well as the toppling failure, adjacent to an IBIS slope stability radar. Both devices monitored the slump and the slowly developing toppling movements, with similar results. Although the radar was used as the successful ‘critical alarm’ device for the toppling failure, post-failure analysis showed the laser-based system to be capable of performing a similar role in the ductile rock regime; albeit over much shorter distances than the radar capability. A second laser scanner was deployed to monitor Kanmantoo’s Emily Pit in early December 2014, where it successfully provided critical alarm warnings for a block topple event. Sentry software, which takes advantage of Maptek I-Site 3D spatial imaging technology, was first released in November 2014 to meet industry demand for a cost effective, flexible system to detect movement. Sentry has now been re-launched as a fully transportable monitoring system. Deployed in a custom trailer, the system offers a power and communications module, cellular and Wi-Fi networking and a stable bollard for the I-Site laser scanner and Sentry software. This paper will present rock wall movement data from the Sentry trial and a subsequent two years of monitoring of the open pit walls at the Kanmantoo Copper Mine, at distances out to 750m. In addition, examples of remote geological mapping and small rockfall detection, using the laser scans, will be described. The Sentry system has proven to be beneficial for the continual improvement of slope monitoring and risk management at hard rock mines. It is crucial to record ground movement of any magnitude to enable the safe and economical design of excavations and infrastructure. The DigiMine Laboratory is equipped with technologies to record such movements. This paper analyses the effectiveness of the Digital Mine instrumentation in recording earth movements in light of the Botswanan earthquake which occurred on the 3rd of April 2017 at 17:40 UTC. Recordings from the Digital Mine are compared with other ground sensing technologies which also captured the event (USGS and GEOFON systems). USGS and GEOFON system’s recordings suggest that, there are a number of possible mechanisms that could have resulted in the earthquake as discussed in the paper. Compared to the USGS and GEOFON systems, DigiMine system could not provide an analysis that could give possible source mechanisms. However, the system’s success in recording the Botswanan earthquake, is an indication that the system works and can be further developed or improved. For a comprehensive analysis, more data from various sensors needs to be collected. For example, DigiMine connecting to the national seismic monitoring system or to the local mine’s seismic monitoring system. Such connections will enable the development of a better self-analysis system and possibly prediction of future events. Como resultado de la exploración por litio, hoy se conocen ocurrencias importantes (de hasta 3,000 ppm de litio) en la tobas de composición riolítica en la región de Puno, Perú. Para conocer el estado actual de las principales concentraciones de litio en rocas félsicas (granitos y riolitas), se ha compilado información geoquímica (>10,000 muestras) de varias fuentes en el territorio peruano. La distribución espacial y temporal de las concentraciones de litio muestra que los valores mayores a 300 ppm se encuentran en las rocas félsicas, riolitas del Oligoceno-Mioceno y monzogranitos del Triásico del trasarco, y también en los diques de sienitas nefelínicas (30-100 ppm); todas las cuales se ubican en la margen oeste de la franja de Sn, W, Mo. Los valores más altos (mayores a 600 ppm) corresponden a la región de Puno. Sin embargo, niveles de tobas retrabajadas del altiplano que fueron emitidos por las calderas volcánicas del trasarco y sedimentos que desembocan en el lago Titicaca muestran concentraciones de 100 a 400 ppm de litio. Además, las fuentes termales de Tacna y Moquegua contienen entre 10 y 50 ppm de litio, lo que indica que por debajo de los volcanes recientes existen sedimentos con litio. Finalmente, debe indicarse que el mayor potencial de litio (3,000 ppm) está relacionado con los minerales denominados como macusanitas.

Artificial ground freezing is the unrivalled method for groundwater control during mine shaft sinking. Moreover, ground freezing may also provide temporary ground support. The fast development of fibre-optic temperature monitoring devices, three-dimensional freeze pipe survey methods and numerical modelling software provide grounds for developing new and reliable tools for ground control during freeze shaft sinking. This paper presents examples of predictive numerical models that are based on back-analysis and calibration of temperature data that covers the complete construction cycle from pre-freezing through to artificial thawing. The back-analyses showed that standard numerical models are not capable of predicting the prevailing thermo-mechanical conditions satisfactorily. This paper describes the development and implementation of new tools for improved consideration of concrete hydration and latent heat, along with the introduction of other algorithms that improve and simplify the efforts of managing complex numerical models. A function is presented that allows for an automated correction of the model’s mesh based on results of three-dimensional freeze pipe surveys. This paper demonstrates that the latter consideration is important, because the often employed assumption of idealised freeze circle geometry in numerical models impacts on the accuracy of such model’s predictions. Subsequently, the verification of these extended numerical models is demonstrated. Due to its flexibility, the FLAC3DTM code was employed for the numerical modelling. This software provides the possibility of implementing additional functions written in internal FISH or Python language into the models. It is concluded that state-of-the-art techniques for freeze hole drilling and surveying, on-site monitoring and advanced numerical analysis provide a significant potential for both the design and the operation of largescale ground freezing measures. The application of the extended numerical models for predictive simulations during construction allows for temporary shaft lining optimisation, for assisting in operational decision making and for compensating temporary loss of monitoring data. Jointed rock mass is often encountered in rock engineering and its stability has always been a major concern in underground engineering. To analyze the stress characteristics and their variations in jointed rocks, in this study, a new concept of sub-instability stage before rock failure is defined, and a new experimental method is used to investigate interaction between defects and intact rock of the jointed rock mass during the subinstability stage., Firstly, external characteristics of stress and failure mode of the whole jointed rock are investigated systematically by conducting uniaxial compression tests on red sandstone samples with a set of preexisting open flaws of different sizes, and the interactive damage of intact parts and defects in the subinstability stage was further studied. Secondly, rock-like material samples made of bonded plaster blocks were tested and internal data from stress sensor between the strong and weak segments were collected. The transforming processes from independent activity of the individual segment to overall interactive movement of jointed rock before the unstable failure were analysed. The test results indicated that the subinstability stage marked the beginning of interactive failure between the intact rock and defects. In the early subinstability stage, the relatively intact parts bore most of the load in a jointed rock mass, and the defects were damaged firstly which caused high strain around it. The areas of high strain increase rapidly, extending and migrating, causing damage to the intact parts. In the later sub-instability stage, the interaction effect reached its maximum, and a large number of cracks appeared in the intact rock and they propagated and coalesced. Intact parts experienced rapid failure and then the jointed rock failed. The experimental method used in this paper to identify the sub-instability stage could be used to identify failure precursors of jointed rock masses and to develop technology for disaster prevention in rock engineering. The Convergence Confinement Method (CCM) is one of the frequently used methods that considers the ground response to the advancing tunnel face. The CCM analytical solutions represent stress relaxation on circular tunnel walls in a rock/soil media. The CCM analytical solutions is based on circular tunnel geometry and consider a hydrostatic stress field in a homogeneous isotropic rock mass condition. However, noncircular tunnel geometries, non-hydrostatic stress field, staged excavation process in a discontinuous anisotropic non-linear rock mass conditions are usually ignored in these analytical solutions. In this paper, we investigate the performance of the existing CCM analytical solutions developed for elastic and elastoplastic ground behaviour for circular tunnels. For this purpose, a finite difference analysis is conducted to compare the analytical results with the results obtained from Finite Difference Method (FDM) for a chosen rock mass condition. Results obtained from the investigation shows that floor, crown and wall displacement are 30%, 10% and 23% more, respectively, in a horse-shoe relative to a circular tunnel. This indicates that the application of analytical formulation tailored for circular tunnels would lead to inaccurate quantification of wall convergence in horseshoe-shaped tunnels. El Perú tiene un compromiso para reducir contaminación y emisiones —que nace en el Tratado de París del 2015— en atención al cual debe acelerar un cambio gradual en su matriz energética, encaminarse de forma eficiente hacia las energías limpias, y lograr un crecimiento sustentable y descentralizado. Como política de Estado, ello supone un planeamiento estratégico con metas de corto, mediano y largo plazo para construir una transición energética, que comienza por un uso eficiente y mayor del gas natural y las tecnologías renovables. El desafío implica manejar con sumo cuidado y prudencia los recursos naturales renovables y no renovables que el país tiene a su alcance, así como fortalecer el factor humano y tomar en cuenta los aspectos culturales y sociales vinculados con el manejo de los recursos. De acuerdo con el autor de este artículo, un primer paso en este cometido es la alfabetización ambiental y el planeamiento estratégico en la formulación de políticas públicas para promover el crecimiento sustentable de las actividades económicas. Hay que trabajar indicadores de monitoreo y calidad de la gestión, además de crear política rural, empoderar a la gente y articular políticas públicas sociales y económicas.

This paper addresses a gap in longwall multi-seam interactions and their predictions, providing a case study for future multi-seam operations for both anticipated conditions and a method for understanding the changes in stress regime. Multiple panels were modelled with the results analysed and compared to panel experiences to validate the parameters and properties. The software chosen (LaModel) is a numerical modelling package designed to model stresses and displacements on thin deposits. It utilises a displacement-discontinuity variation of the boundary-element method and has been used extensively throughout both the United States and Australia in multi-seam operations. Analysis of the results demonstrates a clear correlation with the above workings and regions of significant strata instability. This provides the opportunity going forward to analyse new models and incorporate into mine planning and geotechnical designs. Continuous site-based assessment should be undertaken at multi-seam operations to better understand and quantify likely vertical stress levels within the workings. With a detailed analysis of models prior to extraction and a review of models post extraction. Further research is required as LaModel is limited to vertical stress and it is likely that interactions impact both the horizontal and shear stress regime. 3-dimensional modelling could further assist in this understanding, combined with a thorough stress monitoring regime. This paper reviews the floor heave mechanisms in underground coal mine roadways. Previous studies have reported three main failure mechanisms: bearing capacity failure, buckling and swelling. The buckling failure has been observed where immediate floor strata are relatively strong and thinly bedded. On the contrary, the weak floor strata have been associated with both the bearing capacity failure and swelling mechanisms. The bearing capacity floor failures are likely to induce other types of instability such as pillar punching, tensile failure of pillar, roof fall and subsidence as well as floor heave. Despite a considerable amount of research, predicting the magnitude, location and timing of floor deformation is challenging with current state of knowledge.
