"Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) has an extensive history in the application of geometallurgy to the iron ore value chain. Fundamental to this has been the geological logging of material types which are assigned processing attributes such as lump per cent and density. Initially these were used for product (lump and fines) grade predictions in relation to grade blocks to be used within short-term planning horizons.More recently the predictive reach of the material types and their associated processing attributes has been extended due to their inclusion into geological block models. These predictions can now be used to influence mine plans across multiple planning horizons in such a way that the extremes of geometallurgical properties can be pre-empted and managed thus improving efficiency. Spatial material type domains are also used in the planning of metallurgical drill holes to ensure greater representivity of material than was typically obtained by chemical and/or stratigraphic criteria alone.Material type logging has also been enhanced by the introduction of modern, rapid mineralogical techniques that have complemented visual logging. This has enabled the identification and quantification of contaminant minerals and their relationships with host ore types to be established. This data is used to better manage product grade predictions and identify risks to the short-term plan.Work is ongoing in RTIO to further refine logging based predictions and in addition apply them to new areas of the business. "It is widely accepted that bulk ore sorting could provide a step change in processing of low-grade ores. For this to be achieved a rapid, accurate bulk sensor of grade is required as well as sufficient natural variation of grade in the ore stream. CSIRO trialled a magnetic resonance (MR) sensor capable of measuring chalcopyrite, and by inference total copper grade, on the 1300 t/h Ridgeway portal conveyor. The gauge produced an unprecedented set of data down to a 1 t scale for months at a time. This paper analyses the measured variation and compares it to a simple model derived from the bore core data and mixing within the block cave mine.The model of the small-scale (<1000 t) variation is developed using fractal methods which have successfully been used in the past for copper porphyry deposits showing a power law or near power law distribution of copper grade and vein sizes. These fractal distributions have two features highly favourable for segregating ore, a large proportion of low-grade pods and the large-scale spatial clustering of grade. We show the presence of fractal ordering in bore core data at short range in the Cadia Ridgeway porphyry deposit and measure its persistence in the crushed rock produced by the Ridgeway block cave mine over one month. "Geometallurgical programs require the collection of representative samples for geochemical, mineralogical and metallurgical test work. Such protocols must be designed to suit the style of orebody in question. The distribution, proportion and size of gold particles have a direct impact on the effectiveness of sampling and test work protocols, and the gold recovery processes employed. Characterisation studies focusing on ore mineralogy, and gold particle deportment, size and distribution are required. High resolution X-ray computed tomography provides a non-destructive method for analysing the 3D nature of gold in rock samples. It can be used to calculate the modal abundance, particle size and distribution of gold in the sample volume. This paper presents a case study of the imaging of in situ gold particles in a high-grade gold ore. The Nick O’Time reef system comprises laminated quartz veins, which locally bear extreme grades of up to 100 oz/t gold. The mineralisation has previously been characterised from both a mineralogical and metallurgical perspective. Eight visible gold-bearing vein samples were scanned using X-ray microtomography. "Geometallurgy is now recognised within the mining industry as an approach that can both maximise value and reduce the risks associated with resource development. The process of spatial ore variability testing for metallurgical response and the use of quick, inexpensive metallurgical proxies has been well developed in the past decade in industry and the literature, and via various collaborative research programs and laboratories. Technology continues to advance with new techniques such as hand-held analytical tools and automated hyperspectral core scanning, allowing for even faster, less expensive in situ geometallurgical testing.In the current mining industry downturn, a critical frontier of geometallurgy is in its application in short-term geological modelling (ore control) and mine planning, and the associated decision-making. This is the end game at which the hard-won knowledge of orebody variability can be exploited to add near-term value. In order for spatial block models to be fit-for-purpose for such tactical uses, they must be populated with key geometallurgical information and then have workflows that use this richer model as a basis of material allocation to destinations so that the true value of the resource is realised.We envision geometallurgy (geomet) programs designed to add and sustain value at two levels:‘Strategic geomet’ has a long-term strategic focus that actively uses all relevant data that helps predict processing performance such as bench-scale metallurgical tests, mineralogy, geochemistry, ore texture etc (‘the geometallurgical database’) to model spatial ore variability and metallurgical response throughout the life-of-mine (LOM). This will enable better resource definition, more optimal mine planning and scheduling, improved process design and sustaining capital strategy over the LOM. The value-realisation is gained by basing all these strategic decisions on spatial models that better reflect the actual value of blocks (or aggregates of blocks) in the model.‘Tactical geomet’ has a short- to medium-term tactical focus that, again, actively uses the geometallurgical database, but also includes new data derived during ore control activities (such as drilling and sampling) to inform allocation-to-destination decisions via the ore control process. This will enable improved efficiency (ie less error) in allocation of mining blocks as direct feed, stockpile or waste. Importantly, this efficiency will be measured in terms of value and not grade, which is an incomplete – and typically biased – proxy for value. The key benefit is that ore control will then be planned and executed on the basis of realised value.We therefore propose a twofold systematic and holistic, value-based geometallurgical process. This process needs to be planned and implemented in an integrated manner, noting that strategic and tactical geometallurgy can be worked on by the same professionals, sharing data, methodologies and potentially models. "2016 marks an amazing accomplishment in the mining industry as Hecla Mining Company celebrates its 125th anniversary. Mining Engineering sat down with Hecla chief executive officer Phil Baker to gain insight on this tremendous longevity and to get his view on how the company demonstrated persistence, gained perspective and created position for its future.How did Hecla Mining Co. get its start?In 1891, a group of investors formed Hecla Mining Co. to acquire and trade mining claims. No one envisioned at the time that the Coeur d’Alene Mining District would become known as the “Silver Valley” and produce more than 37.2 kt (1.2 billion oz) of silver. Or that Hecla would become the United States’ largest primary silver producer and the last of the pioneer mining companies from this illustrious mining district.What is the origin of the name “Hecla?”That will forever be a bit of a mystery. Some say it was named for an Icelandic volcano. Or that it was the foresight of James Toner, who staked the original claim, that it would go so deep, fulfilling the medieval folklore definition of the word ‘Hekla’ which is the ‘Gateway to Hell.’ I kind of like that one as the Lucky Friday Mine is almost 3.2 km (2 miles) below the surface. It has operated for more than 70 years and has all the markings of being one of only a handful of mines that will exceed 100 years of operations.Is there a common theme, or thread throughout the 125 years?Yes, Hecla has always had a solid core of high-quality and long-lived assets, positioning the company to survive times of low prices and reap the rewards when cycles turn and higher prices are realized. But it is not just assets. Hecla has extraordinary expertise that gives us the perspective of how to acquire, explore, develop and operate mining assets, particularly underground. Hecla is one of the few companies to acquire assets in the last five to six years and we did not have to write down the value of them, which means we paid a fair price for the asset despite the metals price reductions that followed the purchase. And our culture has given us the persistence to develop mines and complete projects despite lower prices. For almost a decade we have been advancing the #4 Shaft project at the Lucky Friday. We will complete this project this year, positioning the mine to operate for decades. We have elected to spend capital on San Sebastian (Durango, Mexico) and Casa Berardi (La Sarre, Quebec, Canada) to start a new mine and increase production, respectively. And we are spending money on new techniques, new equipment and innovations to our operations. Our insistence is on developing for the future, and our persistence in doing so is in contrast to many companies that are reducing investment and shrinking production"

"Mining on Seattle’s SR99 tunnel began in July of 2013. Initial mining progressed slowly through a 4.5 m (14.9-ft) thick fiber-reinforced concrete headwall before immediately entering the first of three planned safe havens. Once through the headwall and safe haven the machine would move through roughly 122 lineal m (400 ft) of jet grout improved soil at a rate of slightly more than 1.6 m/d (5.3 ftpd). It was anticipated that once mining has passed through the improved area, “Bertha” – now the world’s second largest tunnel boring machine (TBM), would be moving at a rate of almost 11 m/d (36 ftpd). By the end of October 2013, Bertha had mined roughly 131 m (430 ft), averaging 1.4 m/d (4.7 ftpd), and had begun mining within native soils. By the start of December 2013, tunneling had reached the 244 m (800 ft) mark and Bertha was averaging 3.6 m/d (11.9 ftpd), achieving as much as 12.8 m (42 ft) of progress on given days. Unfortunately, on Dec. 6th, 2013, Bertha began to stumble and all progress quickly came to a halt.Initial reports stated an obstruction had stopped Bertha in her tracks. The preliminary investigation involved installation of 10 deep dewatering wells to reduce the hydrostatic pressure within the ground around the TBM, to allow the contractor’s personnel to inspect the cutter head from within and also to investigate for the presence of obstructions at the face of the cutter head. During inspection, the contractor’s crews found fragments of steel pipe entangled in the cutter head. The steel was apparently from an abandoned 254 mm (0.9 in.) diameter monitoring well casing, previously installed by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) to monitor groundwater conditions for the design and planning of this tunnel project. After the steel was removed from the cutter head and cleared from Bertha’s path, she attempted to move forward but was only able to generate a slow crawl."

"The International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA) held its 42nd General Assembly along with the 2016 World Tunnel Congress (WTC) April 22-28 in San Francisco, CA. The event was co-organized by the Underground Construction Association of SME (UCA). This was the first time the event has been held in the United States in 20 years.As cities demonstrate strong needs in tunnels and underground spaces for public transportation, subway stations, hydroelectric infrastructures and other underground infrastructure needs, the WTC 2016 provided the 2,319 attendees from around the world a unique occasion to discover the latest state-of-the art innovations in urban planning and underground construction projects in the United States and worldwide.The Congress, held in lieu of the UCA’s North American Tunneling Conference, included an exhibit that attracted 226 exhibitors in 298 booths. The exhibit had on display the latest in technical equipment and services from some of the largest and best companies in the international tunneling industry. The exhibit hall was also the place where participants were able to interact with the authors of the 168 posters and receive answers to various topics directly concerning civil engineers: innovative procurement processes, cost and risk management, contractual methods, BIM technologies and examples of innovative underground infrastructures built worldwide. And the technical program included 353 technical presentations – 185 podium and 168 posters.What is ITA?ITA-AITES is a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization that promotes greater use of underground space as a key instrument in sustainable development. Established in 1974 and based in Lausanne, Switzerland, ITA-AITES is made up thousands of professionals involved in the tunnel and underground space industry, including engineers, project owners, town planners, architects, industrial designers, companies specialized in public works and major structures, suppliers of construction site facilities and equipment, lawyers, politicians, researchers and academics, economists, financial experts and other stakeholders.ITA-AITES consists of 73 member nations and 300 affiliated members, including 15 major sponsors and 60 donors. "The undertakings described in the paper titled “Study on correlation of quantified coal rank with self-heating temperature” by Wang and Luo in the November 2015 issue of Mining Engineering (Wang and Luo, 2015) are mathematically sustainable and an acceptable extension of work performed by Smith and Lazzara (1987) for the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The paper is not an accurate explanation of the currently accepted leading practice for determining the propensity of a coal seam for spontaneous combustion. The paper could lead a practitioner to an oversimplified conclusion on how to determine the propensity of a coal seam to spontaneously combust.The spontaneous combustion of coal is a complex and not fully understood reaction. What is understood is that many more factors other than selfheating temperature (SHT) and coal rank are required to sufficiently evaluate the risk of spontaneous combustion in a particular coal seam. A superficial assessment can lead to an improper response to the risk. Some statements on the next steps through an appropriate literature search would have made the authors’ conclusions more credible.The SponCom 2.0 software, updated by the National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) in 2011, provides a path for evaluating the susceptibility of a coal seam to spontaneous combustion. In addition to proximate and ultimate analyses to establish coal rank, and therefore an estimate of SHT, the program includes the history of heatings, friability, seam thickness, overburden thickness, rider seam presence, pyrite presence, face and butt cleat densities, geothermal source presence and other geological features in the assessment. Mining conditions including floor heave, rib sloughage and rate of advance are also assessed to conclude a propensity for spontaneous combustion."

"What do you think are the most important topics in mineral processing today? It is a question that begs to be asked when more than 100 of some of the best and brightest in Colorado mineral processing and their invited guests are gathered in one room. They are there for the 66th Annual Colorado MPD Meeting held at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs: three days of finely curated talks and social events where participation was strong, and information was exchanged and connections forged in a relaxed, informal atmosphere.Water, tailings and social licenseNot surprisingly, water management, with the associated issues of tailings and social license, was high on the minds of those present. The Mount Polley and Samarco tailings dam failures have had repercussions across the industry. “There are big challenges with respect to tailings, and social and environmental pressures to find better ways to treat them,” said Steve Hearn of Huntsman Corp., a view echoed by Bob Kilborn of Kilborn Group LLC. Metso Minerals director Keith Butler said, “Water conservation is a key issue today. Many mining activities are now located in remote areas, so it has social and economic impacts on mining operations.” For Brian Olson of Samuel Engineering, wastewater and reclaimed-water treatment is interesting.Fittingly, the first talk of the meeting was on dry stack tailings by Michael Blois of Takraf USA, who went over both the advantages and disadvantages. “The average now is over one tailings dam failure a year,” Blois said, “and that is one too many.” But the technology may not be the right fit for all projects. In his talk on the KSM project, Jay Layman, president and COO of Seabridge Gold, showed how it isn’t practical for KSM and how Seabridge reached the decision on a cyclone sand tailings managementfacility as the preferred management strategy.The luncheon keynote also dealt with a tailings pond spill, but of a different kind. Bob Schafer, chief executive of Eagle Mines Management, spoke on the federal missteps that led to the spill into the Animas River from the Gold King Mine, a mine that had been a dry mine throughout its life and up to the 1990s."

"The Sangan iron ore mines (SIOM) in Iran are located in a remote area near the Afghanistan border. The SIOM deposit contains a geological resource of 1.1 Gt (1.2 billion st) of mostly magnetite with an iron (Fe) grade ranging from 27 to 61 percent. The Iranian government plans a stepwise development of SIOM in cooperation with private companies to satisfy the growing demand of the Iranian steel industry. Sustainable development is an influential ethical concept in mining all around the world. However, a successful realization of a sustainable development plan is not possible without a foundation on the core values and regarding the specific circumstances of the individual mining country. This paper introduces SIOM and describes sustainable development activities undertaken during its development. From the early stages, these activities have been realized to secure the acceptance of the stakeholders in the region. To evaluate their effects, indicators were filtered to the ones with the highest priority for the stakeholders. Moreover, Islamic values and Iranian regulations and their influences on SIOM were analyzed.Mining industry in Iran The Islamic Republic of Iran holds 68 types of minerals, including salt, sand and gravel, gypsum, chrome, lead, zinc, copper, coal, gold, iron, etc., with 33.5 Gt (37 billion st) of proven reserves and more than 51.7 Gt (57 billion st) of potential resources. Iran is ranked among the 15 major mineral rich countries (1). In accordance with the statistics published by Statistical Center of Iran (SCI), there were 5,316 active mines and 84,922 employees in the whole country in 2012-2013 (2) and, according to the statistics published by Central Bank of Iran (CBI) in 2011, the share of this sector in the gross domestic product (GDP) of the country was 1.2 percent (3)."

"Sluggish prices for commodities and a glut of oversupply of many commodities did not stop the world’s largest mining equipment makers from showing off their latest and greatest machines and technology starting with the world’s largest equipment trade show, bauma 2016 in Munich, Germany.From April 8-14, an estimated 580,000 visitors from 200 countries visited the show that featured 3,423 exhibitors from 58 countries. While primarily a show for construction equipment, the mining footprint has grown over the years. Among the largest exhibits was that of Liebherr, which brought more than 100 products, had an outdoor exhibition stand, a stand for the components division and a career stand under the motto “Be Part of Something Bigger.” One of the biggest aspects of the exhibit was its mining products where the company staged the first-ever professional table tennis match in the 130 m3 (170 cu yd) dump body of the T 264 mining truck. The top German players Timo Boll and Patrick Franziska with their trainer Jörg Robkopf faced Austria’s singles world champion from 2003, Werner Schlager, and the reigning Team Europe champions Chen Weixing and Stefan Fegerl.“Bauma 2016 was an absolute success for Liebherr. With this year’s appearance we were once again able to show our innovative strength, performance and technological diversity to a very large and international audience from the industry. We conducted interesting discussions with numerous customers and partners from various countries and discussed new projects,” said Stefan Heissler, Member of the board of directors of the Liebherr Group.Likewise, Caterpillar, the world’s largest maker of construction and mining equipment had a large presence at the show with more than 60 products and 12,000 m2 (129,000 sq ft)of exhibit space. Among the iconic yellow mining equipment that was on display was the 6015B hydraulic mining shovel."

El presente texto describe la importancia del correcto funcionamiento de los equipos en las faenas mineras a través de las pautas de inspección y formularios impresos en papel y llenados manualmente. Sin embargo, estos escritos son de difícil interpretación -en tanto dificultan su digitación a los sistemas corporativos computacionales de mantenimiento, reparaciones y compras. Por ello, se implementa un sistema de gestión integral de activos para faenas industriales que utiliza identificación por frecuencia (RFID). Así, el primer paso es identificar cada componente y equipo a través de un transpoder FID que permite su identificación inequívoca y automática. Una vez definido el componente, el sistema permite gestionar desde una interface intuitiva y de acceso controlado por perfil de usuario, las tareas de determinar, monitorear y controlar a lo largo de su vida útil y en toda la cadena de abastecimiento.

Para ellos se seleccionaron 3 alternativas de 5 -en tanto el equipo que seguirá operando en faena, será uno de igual marca y modelo y se contempla un equipo de otra marca, pero de capacidad y performance equivalente. Asimismo, para la evaluación se utilizó el criterio del costo anual equivalente (CAE) que sirve para decidir entre proyectos alternativos y con vidas útiles distintas. Sin embargo, la limitación está en la escasez de información en costos de operación y mantenimiento (O&M), desconocimiento del impacto de las prácticas operaciones, condiciones climáticas en las vidas útiles de los componentes de mayor valor y las condiciones de mercados de equipos mineros en arriendo."

MFIRE, the mine-fire simulation program of the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), is widely accepted as a standard for assessing and predicting the impact of a fire on the mine ventilation system and the spread of fire contaminants in coal and metal/nonmetal mines. MFIRE has been used by U.S. and international companies to simulate fires for planning and response purposes. It is a dynamic, transient-state, mine ventilation network simulation program that performs normal planning calculations. It can also be used to analyze ventilation networks under thermal and mechanical influence, such as changes in ventilation parameters; external influences, such as changes in temperature; and internal influences, such as a fire. The program output can be used to analyze the effects of these influences on the ventilation system. Since its original development by Michigan Technological University for the former U.S. Bureau of Mines in the 1970s, several updates have been released. In 2012, NIOSH completed a major redesign and restructuring of the program with the release of MFIRE 3.0. MFIRE’s outdated Fortran programming language was replaced with an object-oriented C++ language and packaged into a dynamic-link library. However, the MFIRE 3.0 release included no change or improvement to the fire-modeling algorithms inherited from its previous version, MFIRE 2.20. This paper reports on improvements that have been made to the fire-modeling capabilities of MFIRE 3.0 since its release. These improvements include the addition of the t-squared fire as a new fire-source model and the ability to include available heat-release-rate versus time data, the addition of a moving fire source for conveyor-belt fire simulations, improvement of the fire location algorithm, and the identification and prediction of smoke-rollback phenomena. All of the improvements discussed in this paper will be included in MFIRE 3.1 and released by NIOSH in the near future.

The cave propagation behaviour of a jointed rock mass is strongly governed by the unique nature of joints and discontinuities, together with the intact strength of rock bridges that make up the rock fabric. A discrete finite difference (DFD) modelling technique has been developed to allow for the detailed consideration of the rock mass structural fabric at many scales and through many different stress paths that can be used for complex mine-scale analysis. The DFD methodology uses interfaces to explicitly represent large-scale structures and ubiquitous joints embedded within the simulated rock mass matrix to characterise intermediate structures. Through simulated testing of DFD materials, properties such as strength anisotropy and scale effects can be obtained. This paper discusses the successful application of implementing a DFD modelling technique for the back-analysis of caving-induced subsidence behaviour of Lift 1 at the Palabora mine.CITATION:Sainsbury, D P, Sainsbury, B L, Paetzold, H-D, Lourens, P and Vakili, A, 2016. Northparkes is located 27 km north of the township of Parkes in central New South Wales, Australia. The operations consist of underground block cave mines and an ore processing plant, which produces high-grade copper and gold concentrate. Production is currently sourced from the E48 Lift 1 block cave mine and open cut stockpiles. Mining commenced at Northparkes in 1994 as an open cut operation. Underground block cave mining began in 1997. Northparkes was the first mine in Australia to use the highly efficient block cave mining method, which relies on gravity and natural rock stresses to fragment and recover the ore.The E48 extraction level is located approximately 581 m below surface and consists of ten extraction drives and 214 drawpoints. Several stress measurements carried out at various levels in both E26 and E48 indicated a low underground regional stress environment and a low to moderate stress state in the E48 orebody. The E48 block used a post undercut strategy that was initiated in 2009, with production commencing in September 2010 and cave-through to the surface occurring approximately four months later in January 2011. Changes to the cut-off grade and fixed prices meant that Northparkes was able to develop an additional two drives to the north of the existing cave and one additional drive to the south. Modelling of the cavability of the additional drives indicated that the cave would not readily propagate to sufficient height of draw to mobilise the ore and tended to arch over to the existing cave shape. Based on modelling and a desire to reduce the risk of the project, preconditioning was adopted. Along with the requirement of safely hydrofracturing an active cave, a measure of the success of the preconditioning was desired. Few block cave operations have developed extension drives adjacent to existing caves.This paper summarises the lessons learnt from the development of this extension project, with a specific focus on ground control and monitoring.CITATION:Snyman, L, Webster, S and Samosir, J, 2016. The Ridgeway gold mine has been an enigma of the international underground hard rock community for nearly 20 years. It nearly didn’t eventuate as it was more than 500 m below a farmer’s paddock in Central New South Wales when the exploration team, looking for open pit deposits, got a sniff on its last attempt and then drilled the high-grade discovery hole. It took separate studies to find an economic mining approach. Newcrest, then a mid-tier mining company, took the venture that set it on a path of growth and built what was to become the backbone of the company for the next 15 years.The initial mining method was sublevel caving (SLC) for the upper 300 m of the orebody. The nameplate production rate for the SLC was 4 Mt/a, which was reached in June 2002 shortly after the commissioning of the materials handling system. The ultimate production rate was subsequently lifted to around 6 Mt/a through a series of innovative and efficiency initiatives. In June 2007, approval was granted for the development of a block cave (BC) operation to extract the ore reserve situated immediately below the existing SLC operations, Ridgeway Deeps. The BC was designed at approximately 6 Mt/a to match the concentrator and a systematic improvement process through the entire underground system again saw delivery rates consistently around 10 Mt/a.In line with the production rate increases, Newcrest was also committed to advancing caving knowledge through a number of targeted research and development experiments and new processes. These were primarily related to improving cave ore recovery through systematic draw marker trials, cave propagation through preconditioning techniques with associated monitoring systems. New technologies were also developed to improve the safety and efficiency of the mine through data collection, cave establishment techniques, production dispatching and autonomous loading.CITATION:Dunstan, G, 2016. Many deposits have been evaluated as potential block caves over the last 20 years due to the perceived benefit of low operating costs. However, block cave projects are typically capital intensive, with mass mining providing high throughput rates that required large investments in mining, processing and utilities infrastructure. While the key economic metrics in deciding to proceed with a caving project are typically net present value (NPV) or internal rate of return, these may not represent the best decision metrics for some companies. Where a caving project is competing for scarce capital amongst other projects in a company’s portfolio or where the caving project is the only project being evaluated by a company trying to raise capital, other metrics may be more appropriate. This paper explores the use of present value ratio and the minimising of maximum negative cash flow as suitable metrics in determining alternative strategies. Trade-offs between optimising for economic value and capital efficiency measures allow for decision-makers to evaluate potentially higher-risk, higher-capital and maximum NPV projects against lower-risk, lower-capital projects.CITATION:Stewart, C A and Butcher, R J, 2016.
