The low-grade talc deposits in Tallapoosa County, Alabama, are associated with a mafic-ultramafic rock complex that is part of a widely distributed schist and gneiss group. These rocks form a synform structure overlying Inner Piedmont lithology. Paragenetic sequence of the Tallapoosa talc is interpreted as enstatite-anthophyllitetalc. Talc occurs as massive boulders formed by the alteration of enstatite-anthophyllite and as finely disseminated discrete particles in the enclosing saprolite matrix. Weathered rock reaches depths as great as 60 feet. The quality and quantity of the talc, however, are variable. Mineral analyses of the talc-bearing samples, by petrographic grain count, indicate a talc content of 16 to 26 percent. Most of the talc occurs as plates or scales that are moderately stained with limonite. Fibrous talc also occurs in the deposits and is often mistaken for anthophyllite asbestos which is intimately associated with the talc. The size, shape, and occurrence of the talc deposits precludes any method of min¬ing other than open-cut. A small-scale mining operation began in the district in 1969. Potential capacity of the operation is 5, 000 tons per year. Inferred reserves, based on field investigations, are placed at approximately 8 million tons. Information presented herein was gathered by examination of 29 fluidized- bed thermal coal dryers and by conferences with manufacturers and users of such equipment to determine what safety features could be incorporated in design, installation, and operation to minimize fire and explosion hazards. Fire and explosion hazards are inherent in certain types of coal dryers in that high temperatures are employed; the sizes and volatility of material handled are capable of propagating explosions; and drying gases are seldom, if ever, low enough in oxygen content to prevent ignitions of dust clouds, distilled gases, or their combinations. This is especially true for fluidized- bed dryers in which the coal is dried in air suspension and in which atmospheric air is constantly introduced to temper the heated furnace gases. Occurrence of fires on heated bedplates, in dust collectors, and in hot gas inlets was common in nearly all the dryers examined. Forceful explosions which produced external effects had occurred in 11 (39 percent), and internal "puffs" or "bumps" had occurred in at least 24 (79 percent) of the plants examined in the study.

As reservas de minério de ferro da Mineração Usiminas S.A. (MUSA) estão localizadas no extremo oeste do QF e ocupam a porção ocidental da Serra do Curral (Alkmin, 2009 [1]), também chamada Serra Azul e inseridas no Supergrupo Minas / Formação Cauê. Abrangem as Minas Oeste, Central e Leste. Atualmente a classificação geológica industrial adotada pela empresa leva em consideração o teor de ferro, contaminantes e compacidade (granulometria) das rochas. Os minérios são separados em dois domínios litológicos, hidratado e silicoso. Estes domínios apresentam comportamento granulo-químico fortemente heterogêneo tanto lateral como em profundidade (Teixeira, 2015 [2]), este comportamento confere ao planejamento da lavra elevado grau de dificuldade em relação às estimativas de massas e teores no que se refere à separação dos estéreis e minérios. Até novembro de 2015 o Planejamento de Lavra de Curto Prazo utilizava modelos de blocos atualizados mensalmente para a liberação de planos de lavra mensais e estimativas de teores do ROM, porém, ao longo do mês os desvios de teor na alimentação da planta e dificuldades na execução da geometria planejada eram frequentes. Diante disto, com foco na redução destes desvios, passou-se a gerar os modelos de blocos semanalmente para confecção de programações de lavra semanais e diárias com expectativa de liberação de estimativas de massas e teores com maior grau de confiança e melhor previsibilidade das características granuloquímicas dos produtos finais. Para a elaboração dos modelos semanais foram adotados novos métodos nas ferramentas de topografia, amostragem de frentes de lavra e mudança na rotina do mapeamento geológico, que passaram a ser executados semanalmente. Os resultados obtidos foram as reduções de desvios de teores na alimentação dos processos unitários das plantas e na produção de granulados.

Laboratory bias is a universal problem in all branches of analytical science. It results from differences in methods, techniques, equipment, and calibrations between laboratories. Notwithstanding that it is a property that can be measured by the use of standards or by inter-laboratory testing, laboratory bias remains a material issue for the mining industry. There is extensive literature and clear guidelines on measurement from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and its worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies) and from the science of metrology. ISO guides cover the manufacture and use of standards. An accessible source of literature covering laboratory quality control comes from the public health sector, particularly pathology. There is little doubt in financial reporting rules about the meaning of materiality. Public reporting guidelines are clear that material matters need to be disclosed for investors. Unfortunately there is currently no clear guidance what to do about biased assay results in mineral industry public reporting guidelines. This paper reviews the requirements for the manufacture and use of reference materials, public reporting requirements in the mining industry, and presents proposals to improve management and reporting of laboratory biases. Engineering education has become a matter of national concern, at last, so I would like to talk about the links between the mining industry, the universities and technological developments. The Australasian mining industry and the mining schools have collaborated closely since the first school was established in 1871 and during those years there were a series of remarkable technological developments. For example:In the late 1880s George AndersoIl Richard developed chloride leaching of gold at Mt Morgan. This made a large difference to the wealth of Mt Morgan Mining Ltd.In the mid 1890s Robert Sticht demonstrated that pyrite smelting was an economically feasible process at Mt Lyell and the wealth which came to Mt Lyell Mining Co from his outstanding work made it one of the great companies in the country.During the first 15 years of this century flotation was developed at Broken Hill and it has proved to be one of the great technological inventions of this century.In the 1920s G K Williams started his outstanding work on lead smelting and refining at Port Pirie, this was work which ultimately re-wrote the text book on lead metallurgy and established Port Pirie as the mecca for lead metallurgists.In the 1920s also Frank Stillwell, later joined by Austin Edwards, established the new science of mineragraphy at the University of Melbourne. They were both great geologists, both were superb scientists and oddly enough both were outstanding athletes.In the 1930s Dr Ian Wark, a man in the front rank of Australian scientists of any period, started his outstanding work on flotation, work which resulted in a text book which remains a leader in its field today.In the 1930s also Arnold Black at Broken Hill South Ltd picked up the work which had been done at Mt Lyell many years previously and eventually wrote the papers on hydraulic fill which demonstrated that he led the world in fill technology. What a remarkable story of achievement it was, it laid the groundwork for the great industry we have today. It was possible because the industry was well supported by outstanding university schools and I would like to talk about some of these.

At Gipronickel Institute a technological flowsheet of pressure leaching of copper from rich copper concentrates (i.e. containing: Cu -59-75%; Ni -D.5-4.64%; Fe -D.2-J.3%; S -21.8-26.9%) was developed. As a result, the possibility of deep decomposition of copper-containing minerals with extraction of elemental sulphur (up to 90-95%) was established. The obtained sulphur concentrates contain 80-90% of elemental sulphur, which can be separated from sulphide residue through autoclave melting and settling. As a rule, sulphide concentrates remaining after extraction of sulphur contain up to 1-2% of noble metals. The sulphide concentrate can be purified to the level of rich concentrates or pure metals using the well-known methods as in the case of tankhouse slimes. The presented research specifies the parameters of main operations: pressure leaching and sulphur extraction. It was established that 98% of copper could be transferred into solution at temperatures of 108-1 10°C and oxygen partial pressure 0.4-0.6 MPa. Experiments were carried out in autoclaves of various volumes using the products of nickel matte processing.

Due to the increased chance of violations and shutdowns by the U.S Occupational Safety and Health Administration(OSHA) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a company can save itself problems by taking control of the dust caused by conveying material. A complete dust-control policy can keep these emissions confined, sealed and suppressed, protecting the environment from fugitive, airborne dust. Material handling and processing, storage and traffic are the major dust producing sources. All industries that convey dry, light material need a dust control system.

Interest in the potential use of high-density, thickened tailings has recently increased significantly. Reasons for considering this new technology vary across projects, but commonly include the need to conserve water, perceived lower risk of catastrophic failure, potential easier closure, or even reduced overall costs. As with any new technology, there has been some tendency to overstate its potential benefits. This paper reflects on whether or not the potential benefits that have been attributed to paste and thickened tailings have been realized. Using a grading system, thirteen benefits that were ascribed to the new technology some years ago are evaluated. Data is taken from case studies, and it is suggested that the key proven benefits appear to be reduced operating costs in some cases, reduced wall-building costs, and reductions in water consumption. One key potential benefit that has not been universally achieved is a reduction in the footprint of the tailings facility. Reports in the literature highlight the sometimes confusing nature of trade-off studies. Unless full life-of-mine costs are considered, these studies can be misleading and incorrect. The need to establish a consistent basis for comparative studies is discussed.

"INTRODUCTIONCominco Limited, one of the free world's largest producers of lead and zinc having majority ownership in Pine Point Mines Ltd., operates a mining and concentrating complex on the south shore of Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories. The mine was developed in 1963-64 and commenced operation late in 1964 with the direct shipping of high grade ore. The concentrator started production in November 1965 at a design throughput rate of 5,000 T.P.D.In 1968, the Company acquired the mining rights to a large ore body located to the east of the Pine Point claims and subsequently an expansion program at the concentrator raised the throughput rate to 8,000 T.P.D. The expansion included a third grinding circuit and additional flotation capacity. The flotation capacity took the form of a completely separate circuit from the existing flotation plant. In 1972, the zinc flotation circuits were modified to include two additional stages of cleaning. This change concluded the ""Pre-Consolidation Flotation"" circuit at Pine Point.In considering these modernization programs of the flotation section of the concentrator, the philosophy was to utilize the largest available machine having proven and modern technological changes. With the advent of the large capacity machines available in the late 1970's, it was considered a suitable time to revamp the entire flotation circuit at Pine Point in 1979. The Circuit Consolidation Project was developed to meet this requirement."

The mechanized mining cycle using loaders and shuttle cars had it speak in terms of usage in the mining industry during 1950 through 1960. In Brazil, this system is still used at underground coal mines in southern Santa Catarina coal basin. With the aim of investigating the benefits of a new mining scheme using the room and pillar method for these local mines, a computational simulator model was developed in order to investigate the mining cycle. This paper presents the methodology used to develop the simulator and the results that the simulation shows regarding impact of the proposed new scheme on mining productivity.

Through a unique partnership between the Colorado Mine Safety and Training Program (CMSTP), the Colorado Rock Products Association (CRPA) and the Higher Education and Advanced Technology (HEAT) Center, a video packed, dazzling CD-ROM training program was developed for new miners entering the aggregate industry. Why this product was developed, and why the aggregate industry, will be discussed along with the challenges faced throughout the project. Cooperation from every one involved including MSHA made this the product of which all other training materials in the mining industry will be measured against in the 21st Century. This product's versatility and wide application makes it a tool that is as critical to a mine's success as any earth moving machine. Developed with both state and federal grant moneys allows this product to be affordable to small operators and independent contractors. The quality of this two CD-ROM set rivals any commercially made CD-ROM training.

Over the last few years, and especially the last few months, issues relating to Corporate Governance in industry in general, and the Minerals industry in particular, have become increasingly topical, as a result of a number of scandals and failures. The development of International and National Codes for the reporting of Mineral Resources and Reserves began some years ago, and has been followed by more stringent Listing Rules for the Securities Exchanges, as well as more standardised formats and protocols for financial reporting of assets and activities. More recently, some countries have adopted Codes for the Valuation of Mineral Properties, which have focussed on standardisation of valuation approaches to be adopted, and the qualifications of people deemed competent to sign off such valuations. This process has not been without criticism, the main criticism being the proliferation of local standards and regulations, which are often difficult to apply and regulate, or which are too prescriptive for multinational mining companies to deal with. In South Africa, these concerns have been recognised, while at the same time a need has been identified to establish a Code which could be applied to South Africa, and the African continent as a whole. Such a development would necessitate that the Code satisfies the needs of the continent, but in a global context. This global context has already been set by the activities of the International Organisation of Securities Commissions, the International Valuations Standards Committee and the International Accounting Standards Board. This paper explains the progress and process that has been established in South Africa for this purpose, and highlights the key issues which are open to public debate, so that the process is inclusive and transparent, whilst at the same time it is consistent with international time frames, and provides a deliverable product that meets the desired objectives.

Where pasture production is the intended land use of the areas to be reclaimed, the creation of a suitable growing +medium is a major objective. To achieve this land reclaimers require a sound understanding of the proposed mining plan and a knowledge of the physical, biological and chemical properties of materials intended for resurfacing disturbed areas. Where the original soil is not being replaced in its natural state, research is usually required to determine an alternative growing medium. Results from field research conducted on waste material from the Waihi Gold mine are reported with emphasis on the significance of soil depth in relation to pasture production in this environment.  Problems in extrapolating field research to large scale operations are also considered.   Essentially the requirements for successful pasture production, on surrogate growing medium, are akin to conventional approaches used in New Zealand in the development of unimproved agricultural land. High inputs of fertiliser are initially needed, especially where volcanic soil is used, and careful management of pastures and soils is required to minimise soil erosion and create a sustainable system. In the first three to five years of pasture production, grazing use of the land requires to be dictated by pasture availability and soil conditions and not by animal feed requirements. The use of light stock (young dairy or sheep) is recommended.   Successful land restoration requires a team approach by a range of cooperative specialists including engineers, soil scientists, farm managers, agricultural contractors, landscape architects and environmental officers.

Historical Sketch Occurrences of native copper have been known along the Arctic coast of Canada, especially in the vicinity of the. Coppermine river, since the early part of the eighteenth century (See map, Figure 2, insert). In 1769, Samuel Hearne, a clerk of the Hudson's Bay Company at Fort Churchill, was sent to explore the 'copper mines' from which natives had been reported to secure copper for tools, fishing spears, etc. After two successful attempts, he reached the Coppermine river in 1771, accompanied by Indian guides. This hazardous trip was indeed a remarkable feat when one considers the vast distance covered, a great deal of which was barren lands. At Bloody falls, (See Figure 1) on the Coppermine river, Hearne's Indians swooped down on a party of sleeping Esquimaux, who gathered there each summer to fish, and murdered the entire band encamped on that side of the river. Hence the name of the falls. Hearne's knowledge of minerals was undoubtedly limited. He reported having seen the copper mines from which the natives were securing the copper, but he failed to prove the economic possibilities of the copper occurrences or to give an accurate description of any deposit. Sir John Franklin visited the area in 1821. He and other members of his expedition, namely, Richardson, Back, Kendall, and Hood, reported native-copper float to occur in the vicinity of the Coppermine river and Bathurst inlet.

Controlling noise has proven difficult in mining, and noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) remains common. In 2008, a South African Mine Health and Safety Council study focused on small- to medium-sized mines in relation to the milestones set by the industry to prevent NIHL. An evaluation of the compliance of ten diamond, sand, aggregate and Ready mix concrete mines and production sites with standards, legislation and best practice guidelines relating to NIHL prevention was conducted, using a noise compliance audit tool. The findings indicated that all mines surveyed had poor compliance with the international standards, compliance with International Standards Organization standards being the poorest. There was a clear distinction between the small and the medium-sized mines in their compliance with local standards and legislation (ranging from 14 per cent to 66 per cent). The areas of best compliance were audiology and medical examinations. The lower-than-expected compliance was largely attributable to shortcomings in hearing conservation programmes for occupational noise. Initiation of remedial practices in the small- to medium-scale mining sector to facilitate improvements in NIHL prevention and compliance with standards and legislation is recommended. Water solidification of mattes, metals, alloys and certain slags with high metal entrainment has customarily not been practiced due to the belief that such processes are too dangerous and unproven in the Pyrometallurgical Industry. Slag granulation on the other hand is extensively applied, although in some cases crudely, with disastrous effects, as a result of not recognising the high heat capacities prevalent in slags. This paper will examine the most common air solidification processes and compare such processes with water solidification, mainly slag and matte granulation processes and design criteria for safe and reliable operation. Finally, purpose designed granulation and solidification processes will be discussed taking into account specific applications and the individual signatures of alloys and slags, emphasising that no slag, matte or alloy responds in similar fashion to a granulation practice.

"Within the mining industry paste backfill technology has evolved over the last two decades. This technology aims at producing safe and cost effective backfill of high strength. When used as cemented backfill underground the usual practice in the mining operations was to consider the backfill as a component under the production engineer responsibility. With its growing use in various site conditions some problems were encountered. Over time the mechanical characteristics of paste backfill could deteriorate. Investigations on these problems brought an increased understanding of paste backfill chemistry. Effectively, paste backfill is produced with tailings slurry having sometimes very complex chemistry and mineralogy. The bonding agents can be sensitive to the chemistry of these slurries. Today, a new understanding of the complex chemical reactions involved in cementing paste backfill is derived from concrete research literature. Cemented paste backfill is a manufactured product and as thus all steps involved in its making must be looked at. Both the processing engineers and mining engineers need to be involved. The proposed paper will go over the various developments and new understanding gained over the years on paste backfill chemistry. The authors had the opportunity to work with various Canadian mines that implemented paste backfill in their operations. Chemical alterations case study will serve to illustrate the importance of a good understanding of cement and paste chemistry. The authors will then conclude on research orientations needed to bring a more efficient use of paste backfill technology. The crucial role of the processing engineers in the paste backfill manufacturing will be discussed.INTRODUCTIONPaste backfill is usually prepared from a mixture of solids and water containing at least 15% particles smaller than 20 microns with the addition of binders for mechanical strength. Historically, tailings had been classified to extract the fines and only the coarse part was placed underground as sand slurry. Paste fill was researched in the last three decades to enable mining operations to use all the tailings, including fines, in backfill. The outcome of the early studies showed that paste fill provides high strength but due to preparation complexities and transportation problems is expensive. A greater understanding of the transportation mechanisms and advances in dewatering technology in recent years has resulted in more practical use of paste backfill."

A joint effort by the Pittsburgh Research Center (PRC) and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA)3was undertaken to determine how well self-contained self-rescuers (SCSR's), deployed in accordance with Federal regulations (30 CFR 75.1714), held up in the underground environment with regard to both physical damage and aging. This report presents findings regarding laboratory-tested SCSR's in the fifth phase of testing from mid-1993to early 1996. The SCSR's were tested on human subjects and on a breathing and metabolic simulator (BMS) at PRC. These results indicate that most of the apparatus, if they pass their inspection criteria, perform satisfactorily.

IN 1880, the late James Douglas, LL.D., was superintendent of the Chemical Copper Co., operating the Hunt & Douglas process for the treatment of the siliceous copper ores of the Jones mine at Phoenixville, Pa. In conjunction with this a refining furnace was operated. After correspondence with Ben Williams, of Bisbee Ariz., who was commencing the mining and smelting of the Copper Queen ore. Dr. Douglas decided-to make his first journey to Arizona. While making plans for the trip lie visited a friend in Philadelphia, a .Mr. Logan, a prominent lawyer. He, through Professor Treadwell, brother of the discoverer of the great Treadwell gold mine of Douglas Island, Alaska, had an option with his min¬ing partner, Mr. Lenig, on the Eureka and Wade Hampton claims near the headwaters of the Verde River in Yavapai County, Arizona. These two claims, later the source of practically all of the wealth of the Jerome district, were then owned by C. P. Head and Co. Prescott merchants. Hugo Richards, banker, and formerly sutler at Camp Apache; Rod and John McKinnon prospectors and Nova Scotians; and perhaps one or two 'other owners of minor interests. Mr. Logan, hearing of Dr. Douglas intended trip to Bisbee, asked him to go first to see the two mining prospects, and this, Douglas, in need of the $500 fee, agreed to do as the time on the option on the claims was running short.
