Surface subsidence that results from longwall mining can be large magnitude and can affect significant areas. Conventional methods for subsidence monitoring include leveling, global positioning system (GPS), and photogrammetric surveys. Remote sensing techniques, including aerial LiDAR, terrestrial laser scanning, and satellite-based differential interferometric synthetic aperture radar (DInSAR), are also used to measure deformation associated with subsidence. DInSAR data are different than data from conventional subsidence surveys. Images capture data over large areas (hundreds of kilometers), and each pixel (data point) in an image quantifies the average displacement over an area of square meters. DInSAR data can have fairly high time resolution; imaging periods typically range from weeks to months.

"An index to evaluate the amenability for processing of different coals is implemented. The index is based on the well-known Mayer-curve or M-curve. The index is superior to other existing indices and is implemented using Microsoft-Excel™. Several coals are used to demonstrate the implementation of the index proposed.IntroductionIn 1950, Mayer introduced a curve that carries the information embedded in the fir s t three curves or ash curves of the conventional washability tables and curves (Peng et al., 1979; Osborne, 1988). The curve was labeled the Mcurve (abbreviation for Mittlewertkurve in German or the Mayer- curve). The main idea behind the curve is to use the ordinate for the cumulative mass and the abscissa for the ash (attribute) mass. Specific slopes on the resulting curve represent the cumulative float, cumulative sink, and elementary ash (attribute) contents (Mayer, 1950, 1953, 1957; Venkatesan, 1975; Osborne, 1988; Salama, 1989). Beyond the ash values, the curve carries graphical information that can be used in evaluating coal processing characteristics. Consequently, it becomes possible to present several raw coals on a single diagram, thus making it easier to compare their processing characteristics. This is particularly useful in comparing various size ranges of raw coal or the same size range from different seams. Therefore, the M-curve is adopted as a vehicle for developing the “processing (washing) characteristics index” implemented in this paper."

Central Florida is among the fastest growing urban areas in the United States, and its rapid development has required the steady construction of various types of civil engineering works. The karst geologic terrain and variable geotechnical conditions, however, present special challenges to the design and construction of deep foundations. The subsurface profile can be idealized as a surficial layer of Pleistocene sands, underlain by the highly variable Miocene-age Hawthorn Group, consisting of various combinations of sand, silt, clay, phosphate and highly weathered limestone. The Hawthorn Group is underlain by Eocene-age limestone that comprises the Floridan aquifer. Vast networks of solution cavities are present throughout the Eocene limestone, sometimes allowing downward raveling of the overlying soils and the creation of sinkholes. In some cases, the relic sinkholes can be filled with soft compressible organic soils extending to depths greater than 100 feet (30.5 m). Driven piles are frequently employed as a deep foundation alternative, although occasionally cast-in-place piles/shafts have also been used. Piles are often driven for bearing in the weathered limestone within the Hawthorn Group, but are sometimes installed as friction piles in the upper soil and intermediate geomaterials. Dynamic pile testing is routinely performed during pre-construction test pile programs, or during production for quality control and assurance purposes. This paper presents discussions on the design and construction aspects of deep foundations unique to Central Florida subsurface conditions and local practice. Foundation issues such as subsurface variability, soil setup, pile damage, negative skin friction, and sinkhole conditions are discussed with the aid of demonstrative case histories.

The National Safety Competition was inaugurated in 1925 by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the Explosives Engineer. In the first nationwide contest, 210 mines and quarries were enrolled. In 1962, the thirty-eighth anniversary of the competition, 910 mines and quarries were enrolled. These participating plants were worked a total of 133,292,989 man-hours. Of the enrolled plants, 415 achieved injury-free operations for the year, the largest number of perfect safety records in the history of the contest.

"The Dumont deposit is a large (1,179 Mt proven and probable reserve) low grade (0.27% nickel), nickel sulphide project located in the Abitibi region 25km west of Amos, Quebec. Royal Nickel Corporation acquired the project in 2007 and has since taken the project from a scoping study in 2010 through to completing the feasibility study in July 2013.The Dumont deposit in a nickel deposit with the recoverable nickel contained in three minerals; pentlandite, haezlewoodite and awaruite. The minerals are recovered by a combination of flotation and magnetic separation. Over the course of the studies many flowsheet design decisions and changes were made. This paper outlines an overview of the project, flowsheet design including the comminution circuit, desliming and awaruite recovery. The overall resulting flowsheet that was used for the feasibility study is then presented along with the confirmatory locked cycle testing that showed the feasibility design basis was able to produce the predicted concentrate grade and recovery.IntroductionRoyal Nickel Corporation (RNC) is a mineral resource company headquartered in Toronto, Canada, primarily focused on the exploration, evaluation, development and acquisition of base metal and platinum group metal properties. RNC's principal asset is the Dumont Nickel project (Dumont project) located in the established Abitibi mining camp, 25 km northwest of Amos, Quebec. RNC acquired a 100% interest in the Dumont property in 2007. A greenfield open pit gold mine in Latin America suspended operations less than three years into an eight-year mine plan after a waste rock dump and heap leach facility sustained substantial damage from a deep-seated landslide. No injuries to employees were recorded because of the slow-moving failure. Due to early detection by the operations team, the owner had sufficient notice of the potential failure and successfully rinsed the heap leach facility prior to the failure event. Engineers estimated approximately 35 million cubic meters of mass movement below the waste rock and heap leach facilities. The original eight-year mine plan produced approximately 60,000 ounces of gold per year. After the failure, the owner terminated gold production, re-configured the mine site to a safe, standby condition and launched a detailed investigation into the root-cause of the failure. Approximately two years after the shutdown, legal interests filed a statement of claim and named three engineering design firms and individuals involved in the project. Several years of litigation, including discovery and deposition proceedings, followed as the legal process considered evidence spanning a 20-year timeline. Changes in project ownership and consulting firms during the development and operations phase complicated the process. In 2017, the plaintiff and last defendant settled. The author was involved as the corporate representative for one of the engineering design firms.

Concentrator plants intake the ore from the mine and produce concentrates by extracting valuable minerals in a succession of process steps. Controlling the extraction process and detecting changes in the process requires updated information on a minute basis. Moreover, due to economical reasons, one must also collect metallurgical samples on a daily basis for monthly reporting.In this paper, we present how slurry samplers were installed in a Cu-Ni flotation plant to accomplish the aforementioned tasks. An on-stream elemental analyser at the plant is used for flotation process control by taking samples from selected process streams. Two process streams, the flotation feed and tail, are also equipped with metallurgical samplers. The metallurgical samplers were designed to have low head loss, be robust and easy to maintain and to collect slurry samples in a reliable way for the metallurgical accounting.Samples were collected by different sampler types and we discuss the uncertainty arising from sampling in the assays. Variographic analysis was carried out on the process data in order to find periodic components in the process, and estimate the correct number of shift sample increments and measurement error components. The metallurgical samplers were proven to be reliable devices with zero downtime and no sanding issues in the main process flows. In addition, we show that the tail measurement is the most important one for the plant recovery calculation, which emphasises the importance of the sampling accuracy in the tail stream.CITATION:Lohilahti, J, Korpela, T, Minkkinen, P and McPherson, B, 2014. Base metals and platinum group metals can be collected in metallic alloy form, via a wide variety of smelting processes. The recovery, or degree of collection, of the valuable metals is a function of the extent of reduction in the furnace, which, in turn, is indicated by the fraction of iron present in the feed materials that report to the alloy. An equation has been developed that relates the recovery of various metals (such as Ni, Co, Cr, and PGMs) to the recovery of Fe. This recovery equation (for each metal) is characterized by a single parameter (K?) that can either be empirically fitted to the data, or expressed in terms of the equilibrium constant and the ratios of the activity coefficients involved. Data from a number of varied DC arc furnace campaigns are presented to illustrate this behaviour.

White Pine Copper Company built and operated, from August, 1962 through May, 1963, a pilot plant to recover copper using a cyanide percolation leach of the sand fraction (+400 mesh) of the mill tailings (1, 2, 3). The pilot plant runs were metallurgically successful and preliminary engineering studies for a full scale operation were completed under contract by an outside engineering firm. Unfortunately, the net return projected at that time did not justify the proposed capital' investment. In the summer of 1973 the project was revived. The rise in selling price of copper over the previous ten years, compared to the projected operating cost of the leach plant, increased the calculated net return on investment with the most recent figures showing a 30% DCF. Basically, the reason for this favorable shift in profitability was that the cost for many of the reagents did not go up as fast in the previous ten years as did the selling price of copper. Using the Chemical Marketing Reporter costs, NaCN sold for 18.3¢/lb in 1963 and 20.75¢/lb in August, 1973. During this same period H2S04 went from $23.50 per ton to $35.90 per ton. In comparison, producer's prices for electrolytic copper were 31¢/lb in 1963 and 619 in 1973. Thus the price of copper went up 97% while the two reagents only increased 13% and 53%, respectively. The capital investment also escalated but, again, not to the same extent as the selling price of copper. These price differences no longer are valid' but they did provide justification for reexamining the project.

Underground coal mining causes overburden deformation and failure, one major form of which is bed separation in the overburden. Surface subsidence can be controlled by injecting grout into the bed separations. For a long time, the grouting results of bed separation can not be validated. This is the problem in the application of this technique. This paper analyzes the conditions leading to bed separation, develops mathematical models for seismic wave fields generated before and after bed separation, and bed separations grouted with different materials, and computes the seismic wave field characteristics using the finite difference method. The results show that the existence of bed separation causes changes in the characteristics of seismic wave field, and that different grouting materials generate different seismic wave field characteristics. Intact strata, bed separation, and bed separation filled with air or water all display distinctive seismic wave field in amplitude and frequency spectra. After mining, the original location that provides strong seismic reflection wave no long exists. It is replaced by a weak and syncline-shaped reflection wave. The area, where the seam wave disappears, is larger than that of the mined area. The location, where a bed separation occurs, generates a set of reflection waves stronger than the normal one. The energy of the reflection waves varies with the materials filling the separations. Bed separations filled with air generate stronger reflection waves than those filled with water. The major frequencies for those filled with air are lower than those filled with water. Therefore, it is possible to determine the property of filling materials by analyzing and comparing the amplitude and frequency spectra of the reflection waves. Case studies of application of seismic method for exploring bed separations and grouting were analyzed. The results show that it is feasible to use seismic technique for exploring bed separations and grouting.

Many Engineers are skeptical and cautious about skin friction factors for the portion of drilled piers where temporary casing is used. This has led Texas engineers in many cases to eliminate skin friction values for the cased section, which necessitates deepening the drilled shaft to compensate for the loss in the cased section. This paper has provided field test data that supports inclusion of skin friction in the temporarily cased hole section as a contributing factor in total axial capacity as comparable to open hole shafts of the same diameter. Reasons for the resultant friction values are provided including; remolding of the cased clay section and the increased pier circumference necessitated by the oversized casing required for adherence to the engineers shaft diameter specification.

S.L. Barua and Y.C. Kim M. Armstrong's paper is very interesting and can be regarded as a pioneering work of applying geostatistics on washed coal. The density levels used in her study are uniformly spaced, which facilitated curve fitting through a proper experimental design. Most of the existing coal washing plants in the US, however, gather washability data at non-uniform intervals which, in turn, affects the goodness of curve fitting. We would like to emphasize the importance of having a proper experimental design, if a similar geostatistical application is to be conducted on washed coal. We, at the University of Arizona, tried the variogram on recovery (Kim, Barua, and Baafi, 1982, SME preprint 82-143) which showed a similar pattern as Fig. 4 of Armstrong's paper. In both cases, the first experimental variogram value is invariably and inexplicably higher than the second variogram value. Although Armstrong ignores the first point because of "small number of sample points," we did not do so because there were 17 sample pairs. As a consequence, we concluded that the obtained experimental variogram was unsatisfactory and that further research is warranted. In other words, this disagreement in variogram interpretation between M. Armstrong and the University of Arizona begs the question whether the experimental variogram of Fig. 4 truly reflects the spatial correlation in washed coal, assuming there is such a correlation. Finally, we wish that Armstrong could have done a similar study on clean sulfur, which is a vital interest to the coal mines in the US. Her implied remark on sulfur in the concluding section of the paper may turn out to be incorrect because our experimental variograms on clean sulfur at different density levels were even less satisfactory than those on recovery.

A crescente demanda por energia elétrica nas aeronaves modernas pode ser constatada pelo aumento da potência elétrica gerada a bordo, como exemplo o Boeing 787 produz 1000kVA, 200V trifásico, 400Hz variável contra 240kVA, 200V trifásico, 400Hz fixo produzido pelo Airbus A330, apesar de possuírem aproximadamente as mesmas dimensões. Devido à necessidade de redução de massa de transformadores, a frequência utilizada na geração de eletricidade na aeronave é de 400Hz o que acaba produzindo um aumento das perdas em núcleos de FeSi destes transformadores, principalmente pelo aumento das correntes parasitas no núcleo. Transformadores elétricos com núcleos de ligas amorfas a base de Fe vêm apresentando redução de até 70% das perdas no núcleo quando operados em 50Hz ou 60Hz. Assim, esse estudo visa discutir as vantagens e desvantagens do uso de transformadores elétricos com núcleos de ligas amorfas a base de Fe em aeronaves. Os resultados mostram que, com o desenvolvimento de novas ligas, tal utilização mostra-se viável devido a uma redução de peso de tais transformadores.

An analysis method for modeling compensation grouting based on the finite element method is presented. By this method the design parameters of compensation grouting, grouting pressure and grouting volume, can be evaluated. Also the subsidence of a building due to tunnel driving as well as the lifting of the building by compensation grouting can be simulated. The stress changes in the tunnel lining and in the foundation of the building are computed as well. The application of the analysis method is demonstrated on two examples for compensation grouting in combination with construction of tunnels.

TiO2 is an ideal material for catalytic technology due to its unique properties. In this paper, Sm3+ doped TiO2 photo-catalyst was developed to improve the efficiency of TiO2 and to use the natural light as irradiation source, which was made from Titanium Tetrabutoxide and Samarium Oxide with the Sol-Gel process. The Sm3+-TiO2 photocatalyst was used to degrade reactive orange 4 (RO4) in Azo Dyes. The effects of solution pH, Sm3+ concentration and catalytic time on the degradation rate of RO4 were studied. The characteristics of the catalyst were analyzed with XRD and TEM. The experimental results show that the catalyst has high activity in the degradation of RO4. The Azo bonds of RO4 are active and easily broken by oxidation. The catalytic activity of the Sm3+ doped catalyst greatly depends on the pH of solution. The catalyst has high photo-catalytic activity at both neutral and alkaline conditions. The degradation mechanism of the Sm3+ doped TiO2 photo-catalyst was also discussed.

"INTRODUCTION During the recent war attention was directed to prevent the destruction of American industries by sabotage. By Executive order of Lay 19, 1942, the Bureau of Mines was required to conduct investigations and make recommendations that would prevent loss of production of essential war minerals. The Health and Safety Branch of the Bureau of Lines was able to extend its activities with minimum loss of time to include security surveys of the important mineral facilities in the United States.A Mineral Production Security Division was established in the Health and Safety Branch with funds appropriated for that purpose by Congress in April 1942. From July 1942 to July 1945 engineers of this division, under the direction of D. Harrington, Chief, Health and Safety Branch, and J. J. Forbes, Chief, Mineral Production and Security Division, conducted investigations of 1,560 metallic and nonmetallic mines and associated facilities in accordance with the requirements of the Executive order.PURPOSEAn analysis of losses in the production of minerals shows that failure or destruction of equipment either from deliberate or accidental causes produces essentially the same result. Maximum production is insured by the prevention of subversive activities, fires, and industrial accidents."

Tensões residuais podem ser muito prejudiciais ao desempenho de um componente, tornando sua quantificação e avaliação extremamente uteis. A difração de raios-X é um método de análise não destrutivo que permite avaliar as tensões sem comprometer o material. Neste trabalho, tiras de aço duplex UNS S32304 com 1,8mm de espessura foram cortadas nas dimensões 36x72mm e soldadas de modo autógeno através do processo TIG. Produziram-se dois tipos de amostras variando-se o gás de proteção a saber: mistura de argônio 98% e nitrogênio 2% e argônio 99.995%. Utilizou-se um difratômetro com geometria Bragg-Brentano, fonte de radiação CuKa ( = 1,5419Å). A técnica sen2 ? foi empregada para determinar a tensão residual da fase austenita no ângulo 2?=146.22°. Os resultados mostram um estado de tensões residuais trativo nas proximidades da zona fundida, chegando a um estado compressivo em regiões distantes. A análise comparativa dos perfis de tensão residual revela que a amostra soldada apenas com argônio apresenta menor tensão residual trativa na zona fundida.

"Abstract — Systematic characterization of the mineralogy of massive sulfide ore deposits can provide valuable insights into ore genesis and metallurgical processing that would not be apparent otherwise. We describe a method wherein (1) normative mineral abundances are calculated from whole-rock chemical assays using an algorithm, (2) the results are cast in block models, (3) the results are then verified with automated image analysis of a subset of samples prepared as grain mounts by backscattered electron imaging and X-ray mapping on a scanning electron microscope, and (4) those verified results are integrated with textural data determined by optical microscopy.The technique is applied to the magmatic Ni-Cu-Co sulfides of the Ovoid orebody, based on geochemical assays of 3175 whole-rock samples. Three principal ore zones are defined in the Ovoid. Type I ore occurs in the center of the deposit; it is magnetite-rich and pyrrhotite-poor with intermediate contents of pentlandite and chalcopyrite. Type II ore surrounds Type I ore and is pentlanditechalcopyrite- rich with intermediate contents of pyrrhotite and magnetite. Type III ore occurs at the base and along the outer periphery of the northern part of the orebody; it is pyrrhotite-rich and chalcopyrite- poor with an intermediate content of pentlandite, and a low-to-intermediate content of magnetite."
