Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Tech (Metallurgical Engineering) degree Fine coal of the Goedehoop Colliery is dewatered by centrifuging before being sold. Full-scale plant tests were carried out to reduce residual cake moisture by the addition of surfactants. It is believed that by modifying the interface between the coal surface and the adherent surface water, as well as the water occluded in the cake voids, drainage is improved. Two anionic surfactants at concentrations up to 150 g/t were tested on coal of <0.5 mm size. The results demonstrate that quite high additions of surfactant (80 g/t)were needed to reduce moisture from 20 to about 17?18%. It was observed that when increasing surfactant additions at low levels, within a very narrow concentration range, the retained moisture first increased sharply only to decrease sharply immediately thereafter; this effect points to a critical surfactant concentration. Based on the obtained results, the use of surfactants cannot be recommended at this stage; further investigations under more controlled conditions are required.

Introduction Under our present civilization, industrial developments will be greatest in those areas in which energy .can be most economically produced and efficiently used, where labour is in adequate supply, and where markets for the products of industry are available. A knowledge of fuels- the present major sources of energy- and of their utilization is therefore of vital importance. With that in mind, the aim in this paper will be to outline the known reserves of fuels in Alberta, to give their characteristics, to indicate the markets served by each, and to offer some suggestions for the future development of the coal industry. The paper should be regarded as a compilation of published data rather than as an original treatise. Alberta is richly blessed by having large reserves of mineral fuels. The estimated reserves of coal are 46,562 million tons. Alberta is the oil and gas province of Canada. The world&apos;s largest deposit of bituminous sand occurs along the Athabaska river in Alberta. In addition, there are large areas of forested land in the northern and western sections of the Province, and the rivers serve for the development of hydro-power.

Esse trabalho avaliou a microestrutura e a microdureza do aço inoxidável martensítico AISI 440B nitretado a plasma em reator de fonte DC pulsada, a 480ºC, por 6 horas e pressão da câmara de 3,3 Torr. Foram utilizadas técnicas de difração de raios-X, microscopia ótica, microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) e microdureza. A camada nitretada apresentou aproximadamente 24 µm de espessura, não tendo sido observada a formação de camada branca, constituída exclusivamente por nitretos de ferro ou de cromo. Entretanto, notou-se, na zona de difusão, a presença de nitretos nos contornos de grão, possivelmente, de cromo. O endurecimento superficial do aço AISI 440B, atingiu valores entre 1417 - 1677 HV0,025, ao passo que o a matriz metálica do aço temperado apresentou durezas de aproximadamente 54HRc.

The Bureau of Mines explored the Three Kids deposit in 1941 as part of a strategic minerals program. Earlier mining and exploration had established the presence of a substantial tonnage of medium-grade wad ore, and drilling and sampling by the Bureau of Mines, in collaboration with the Federal Geological Survey, indicated an additional tonnage such that development and exploitation became more clearly feasible. Private interests, with Government support, undertook to produce metallurgical-grade manganese. The present paper describes the Bureau of Mines exploration and subsequent development. Manganese in the Three Kids area is found in one of the lower members of the Muddy Creek formation in a bed of fine sandstone and silt, which outcrops around the north edge of the River Mountains and generally dips 20° to 40° away from the hills. There is considerable variation in the thickness and grade of the ore. The ore is light weight, having a density of 1.2 to 2.

A pesquisa em questão trata-se do aproveitamento e aplicação da escória de aciaria elétrica, um subproduto residual do processo de refino do aço. A força propulsora para realização deste projeto está associada à utilização do resíduo: a quantidade gerada é maior que a quantidade aproveitada, uma vez que este subproduto tem como limitante de uso o fenômeno de expansão volumétrica que compromete obras de engenharia. No presente estudo, a escória foi micronizada, caracterizada e incorporada em uma matriz polimérica para obtenção de um novo produto com propriedades vedantes. Os artefatos produzidos foram submetidos a vários ensaios mecânicos, químicos e de caracterização conforme requisitado pela norma NBR 15750. Após a análise dos resultados, concluiuse que os compostos constituídos pelo resíduo apresentaram melhores propriedades vedantes que o grupo controle de referência. Além disso, verificaram-se melhores condições de processamento nos compostos com escória de aciaria micronizada. Obteve-se, portanto, um produto ecológico, mais viável economicamente, com propriedades que atendem a uma especificação. Dessa forma, difundiu-se a aplicação do resíduo para outros ramos industriais, agregando a este maior valor comercial, promovendo assim a sustentabilidade por meio da substituição de matérias-primas provenientes de recursos não renováveis pela escória de aciaria elétrica.

In engineering in general, close agreement between theoretical predictions and structural performance is rare—this is particularly true in rock slopes. Since the complexity of natural arrangements makes exact theoretical solutions of associated structural problems almost impossible, the role of theory should be that of developing guides or markers to which observations and experience can be related. The author in this paper has outlined the results of a theoretical study of highly idealized models which represent both granular materials and jointed rock. Some important practical considerations result—especially in regard to horizontal stresses—when theory is compared with full-scale experience. In the field of engineering activity, specific examples of close agreement between theoretical prediction and structural performance are rare. Particularly is this so for the case of rock slopes, where, owing to the complexity of the natural arrangements, it is quixotic to expect exact theoretical solutions to the associated structural problems. The role of theory is rather that of developing signposts or guide rails to which observations and experience can be related. It is with this in mind that the present paper has been prepared; the author&apos;s aim has been to set out briefly the results of a theoretical study of highly idealized models which represent both granular materials and jointed rock. Despite the idealization of the problem, it will be seen that the theoretical conclusions are in accord with full-scale experience, particularly as far as horizontal stresses are concerned, and they point to some important practical considerations. CLASSIFICATION OF ROCK SLOPES At the risk of over-simplification, an attempt has been made to classify the problem of rock slopes into three broad categories with respect to internal stress systems. These are illustrated in Fig. 1. It is tacitly assumed in this classification that the strength of individual particles is very much greater than the interparticle strength whether the particles are the crystals of an igneous rock (Case I) or the blocks of Cases 2 and 3. The Homogeneous Monolith: This case is representative of uniform unjointed rock. Under relatively low stress conditions the internal stress system may approximate to that of an elastic body as given by Terzaghi.&apos; It is more usual, however, for overall stability, to consider the material as a rigid plastic which yields in shear when S =C + c tan 4> where S is the shear yield stress, o is the normal stress on the surface of failure, and C and d are empirical constants according to the Mohr-Coulomb criterion of failure. Sokolovsky has recently developed, for the first time, a series of mathematical solutions to problems involvinga C, mass subject to self-weight. He demonstrates that for such a case a semi-arch (Fig. 2) is stable. A corollary of this argument is that for a true C, d material a curved overhanging slope is possible and such an observation may well aid field identification of these materials. The shape of the curved slope face is however directly dependent on the C-value, and from the long-term point of view this is a most difficult value to establish with any degree of confidence. It is customary to measure C and 0 in some form of shear test—usually a triaxial compression test—on core specimens sampled from the rock, and as far as the author is aware the present case is the only one in which, as far as overall stability is concerned, such tests are

Keywords: FC mold, Argon, Magnetic, Solidification Fluid flow plays a significant role for steel surface quality in continuous casting. Although water models are able to model fluid flow, the flow pattern is not of practical interest since the moving solidifying shell cannot be accounted. Computer modeling has become a popular and dependable tool to analyze the complex phenomena occurring in continuous casting. In this numerical simulation we coupled momentum and energy equations considering the solidification of steel along with turbulence ?-e model. The vertical bending mold is equipped with bifurcated nozzle with 15 degrees of port angle. FC mold is supplied with DC induced magnetic fields. Influence of argon and magnetic fields on molten steel flow and heat transfer is investigated by solving momentum equations adding source terms due to multiphase ? magneto hydrodynamics. The results show that magnetic fields reduce the jet velocity from port by lower magnetic core induced field but the influence on meniscus velocity is complex to describe. Magnetic fields increase surface temperature and homogenize its distribution on surface and inside a mold.

In this paper a genetic algorithm is used in a heavily jointed rock mass in order to investigate the critical circular slip surface and modification of slope surface. This method was applied to the southern wall of the 6th Golbini Jajarm bauxite mine. The mine is the largest bauxite deposit in Iran, located to the northeast of the town of Jajarm in the Khorasan province. Estimated reserve of bauxite in this deposit is about 160 million tonnes. Field and laboratory investigations were conducted in order to determine rock mass behaviour. A genetic algorithm code that uses the Simplified Bishop method as an objective function was developed for findingt he safety factor of circular slip surfaces. Sensitivity analysis was applied to determine the optimum values of the genetic algorithm variables, such as population size, selection method, crossover and mutation rates. After finding the critical circular slip surface, slope modification is carried out by removing unstable sections from marked critical slip surfaces, and this process is repeated until the last unsafe section is removed. Based on this code, modification occurred during 7 steps, by reaching a safety factor of 1.3 in the last step. Finally, the modified slope angle of the southern wall of the 6th Golbini Jajarm bauxite mine was determined to be 48.44 degrees. The Leeville underground mine has been in operation since 2006 and currently produces 3,200 tons of ore per day with an average gold grade of 0.4 opt. The mine has a large horizontal extent of 2,500 feet by 500 feet and a vertical extent of 20 to 200 feet. High density of joints occurs within the host rock. Based on Rock Mass Rating and field observation, the Leeville ground conditions are characterized as poor to very poor. As such, heavy ground support is required for the mining operation in Leeville. Ore zones with a height in excess of 10 m (35 feet) are considered for longhole stoping. A typical stope measures 6.0 m (20 feet) wide, 30 to 55 m (100 to 180 feet, depending on the ground conditions) long and 10 to 30 m (35 to 100 feet, depending the thickness of ore body) high, yielding 10,000 to 20,000 tons when completed. Narrow ore zones, less than 10 m (35 feet), are mined using cut and fill. These drifts are 4.6 m (15 feet) wide by 4.6 m (15 feet) high. Based on the afore-mentioned poor ground condition, the establishment of a ground control monitoring system is key to operating both safely and successfully. The ground control monitoring system is composed of comprehensive instrument design and installation. Instruments include Multi-Point Borehole eXtensometers (MPBX) and Stretch Measurement to Assess Reinforcement Tension (SMART) cables. The monitoring system covers the mining zones and infrastructure openings. After about two year?s applications and measurements, useful data has been and continues to be collected to use in future stope and infrastructure structure design. This paper discusses various issues surrounding the metallurgical control for furnaces, especially focusing on processes with long time-constants and æmetallurgical memoriesÆ. Examples will focus on furnaces accepting particulate and sometimes ill-defined feeds, eg submerged-arc furnaces, blast furnaces, secondary scrap smelting operations, recycling operations, waste incinerators, etc. Generally, because of the usually higher metallurgical time constant of these furnaces, these reactors have to be controlled in a feed-forward manner by the use of a hybrid of æblack boxÆ or empirical and ægrey boxÆ semi-empirical first principles metallurgical modelling and simulation techniques in a supervisory metallurgical control capacity.

The Bureau of the Mint of the United States Treasury maintains 13 ofEces for the purchase of gold-bullion, and this paper describes an investigation to establish the reasonable differences in the assay-results at the various institutions which may be commercially allowable in the settlements between them. Beginning with the comparative assay of proof-gold at the Philadelphia mint and the Utrecht mint, which shows 0.00002 as the closest agreement now possible, nine tables of comparative results, taken from the regular work of the service, are given..These tables begin with very fine gold, produced in an electrolytic refinery, showing close agreement in the assay-results, and follow through decreasing gold fineness and increasing amounts and complexity of base metals to very impure and complex bars produced at cyanide-mills, some of which give widely-varying results. Next is given a series of results on samples, prepared and sent out to various laboratories in the service, to test the influence of different metals and various combinations upon the agreement of the assay-results ; 11 samples were sent out and each one was assayed from 44 to 71 times, making a total of 623 assays. To these ire added 107 assays of identical samples of coin-gold. Technological advancements in electronic sensors and mine-wide monitoring systems have improved remote monitoring and analysis of underground mining information. The effective use of . these systems for ground control applications, however, remains a challenge facing the mining industry. The U.S. Department of Interior, Bureau of Mines is conducting research, utilizing real-time acquisition of rock mechanics data, to provide mine operators the means to rapidly identify and manage potentially hazardous ground conditions. The Bureau has installed a remote monitoring network in a Colorado coal mine to record Pressures from instruments installed in the roof and pi1lars of gateroads and from transducers on shield-legs along the face. The field data are being monitored at the Denver Research Center, 150 mi from the mine. A computer at the Center analyzes the field data and generates graphic displays, which permit detailed examination of mine-wide ground conditions in real-time. For the first time, Bureau researchers are able to perform real-time monitoring and analysis of rock mechanics data while mining is in progress. The data collection and display capabilities of the system were effectively used to identify and evaluate face stability problems at the mine.

As escórias de forno elétrico a arco (FEA) têm diversas funções, entre elas a melhoria da eficiência energética através do fenômeno da espumação. Por isso o estudo das escórias é de suma importância nos FEA’s. Um dos fatores que determina a qualidade da espumação e a sua eficácia é presença de partículas sólidas na escória. A saturação de MgO é extremamente importante, pois além de garantir partículas sólidas garante também a compatibilidade química para minimizar o consumo do refratário. Neste trabalho, foi feito o estudo da saturação de MgO para escórias no sistema CaO-SiO2-FeO-MgO-Al2O3, onde avaliou-se a influência que a basicidade binária, os teores de FeO e do Al2O3 tem sobre o mesmo. Foram feitos diagramas ternários, onde viu-se as diferenças que os teores de Al2O3 tem sobre os campos líquidos e as demais fases presentes. Foram feitos os diagramas de saturação isotérmicos (ISD’s) encontrando os mesmos pontos de dupla saturação quando comparados com os diagramas ternários. Fez-se uma validação dos ISD comparando a posição de diferentes corridas com a energia elétrica consumida. Quanto mais próxima a corrida está da linha de saturação menor será seu consumo energético.

The Canadian mining industry is one of the strongest in the world. Not only does the country produce a sizable amount of minerals and metals, Canada plays host to hundreds of global mining companies, large and small. The country, for the most part, recognizes the importance of natural resource development, particularly mining, to its economic well being. Like any country, though, there are federal and provincial regulations on the books that the industry takes issue with. But there are also certain economic incentive programs in place to encourage exploration and mine investment. And, unlike the industry and the United States government, the Canadian government and mining industry appear to have a reasonable working relationship.

A Samarco Mineração utiliza combustível sólido para geração de energia térmica nas pelotas de minério de ferro. Este insumo torna possível a redução da utilização de gás natural na etapa de queima nos fornos de endurecimentos e ainda melhora a qualidade física das pelotas. O tamanho das partículas é chave para eficiência do processo e a cominuição destes combustíveis é realizada nas plantas de moagem da empresa, tanto para o antracito quanto para o coque verde de petróleo. Tradicionalmente, um dos principais itens de controle de moabilidade do insumo é o HGI (Hardgrove Grindability Index), que avalia a dureza do combustível sólido no processo de moagem. Porém, este parâmetro não reflete as dificuldades produtivas encontradas nas plantas de moagem da Samarco Mineração. Portanto, foi desenvolvida metodologia através de uma modificação da equação proposta por Bond para avaliação energética de moagem. A lei de Bond tem origem empírica e considera que a energia consumida na cominuição é proporcional ao comprimento das fissuras iniciais que se desencadeiam na quebra das partículas. A metodologia proposta, no presente trabalho, avalia com maior representatividade as dificuldades encontradas na cominuição destes insumos. Ainda, testes em planta piloto de moagem de combustíveis sólidos foram realizados para validação da abordagem.

The contract is concerned with feasibility studies, design and fabrication of a group of prototype hand-held test instruments and machine-mounted test instruments for measurement of electrical shock hazards of mining machines. An instrument for use in open pit mining machine ground wire verification was proposed, developed, built, and tested. This report presents the design and operational theory of the open pit instrument as well as information on the program to improve the original prototype hand-held machine-mounted test instruments.

The technology of clay and the manufacture of ceramic products therefrom, and also the clay resources of most of the individual States, are already covered by a voluminous literature. The present resume touches these matters only briefly; its purpose is essentially to bring together in small compass certain of the elementary factors affecting the potential commercial value of a clay deposit. In its preparation the author made extensive use of the annual chapters on Clay in Mineral Resources of the United States and in the two annual issues of the Minerals. Yearbook that succeeded them. For careful review and constructive criticism of the manuscript, the author is indebted to Hewitt Wilson. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The term ?clay? includes a great variety of substances that may differ widely in chemical mineralogical and physical properties. No two clays are exactly alike. All of them however, have the prominent characteristic of becoming more or less plastic when wet. Nearly all of the useful clays can be molded into articles, will hold their shape while being dried, and can be converted into a hard, rocklike substance by heat. Clay may, and in fact usually does, consist of a number of minerals among the commonest of which are kaolinite, quartz, feldspar, iron oxides, mica, bauxite, calcite, and manganese oxides. Organic matter is often present. Pure kaolinite, which has the formula A1203. 2 SiO2. 2H2O, is ordinarily, considered to be the parent "clay substance," butt most clays contain other hydrated mixtures of alumina and silica (aluminosilicic acids) along with indefinite amounts of sand and other nonessential minerals3/ Even, this so-called inert matter affects the plasticity, drying shrinkage, ease of drying, and final density, and at high temperatures may react chemically with the clay substance.
