Brazilian banded iron formation (BIF), known as ‘itabirite’, is the main host rock for iron ore in the Iron Quadrangle mines, Brazil. Their geneses are controversial and it is agreed that diagenetic, metamorphic and tectonic events, as well as weathering processes, were responsible for the iron concentration. In addition, it is understood that weathering processes are mainly responsible for reducing the original high intact rock strength, and for generating deep weathered profiles with low strength rocks commonly observed in Vale’s mines.A considerable amount of work has been done to correlate the macro and micro aspects of the itabirites as physical, chemical and geotechnical characteristics that directly or indirectly affect the intact rock strength; however, it is not yet clearly understood what effects the weathering processes have on the strength reduction of these rocks and its associated impact on pit slope stability. This forms a key focus of the lead author’s current research work.This paper presents a review of the geological, geotechnical and weathering characteristics of the itabirites, and early results for the evaluations of fresh itabirites from the PhD thesis research being undertaken by the authors at the Australian Centre for Geomechanics, School of Civil, Environmental and Mining Engineering, The University of Western Australia, sponsored by Vale SA.The results showed that to evaluate the density and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) correlation, not only the porosity but also the geological features should be considered, as they are responsible for data dispersion; however, the presented data suggested a trend that provides the confidence to develop advanced studies and a data population increment to establish proper correlations to support a reliable UCS method.CITATION:Costa, T A V, Dight, P M, Mercer, K and Marques, E A G, 2015. High-speed stirred milling is a relatively new method of grinding in the metalliferous process industries. However, it has been widely used in the industrial mineral field for more than 30 years. Many existing metallurgical operations are looking to maximize economic return from existing deposits this requires new thinking and technologies. The operating experience of two copper operations is discussed here to show the effect of the introduction of the Metso Stirred Media Detritor (SMD), a new type of high speed stirred mill. Both operations have derived significant metallurgical benefits from this new technology. The benefits and process difficulties are explained. The initial drive in high speed stirred milling technology was toward ultra fine grinding where the mill product has an 80 percent passing size of 15 µm (937mesh) or less. More recently, a number of installations have occurred in a more conventional regrind setting. Few conventional copper concentrators require such fine grinding to attain satisfactory copper grades and recoveries. So other advantages must be considered here rather than just the ability to grind fine with good power efficiency.

The name willyamite is redefined to include the portion of the (Co, Ni)SbS series with cobalt in excess of nickel. Willyamite is pseudo-cubic, with the three axes equal to within 0·001 A.

"Grouting aims to reduce the permeability of rock mass below a predetermined value and has been widely used in rock engineering field for a long time. However, the injection procedure needs several empirical decision makings and it is rather difficult to reliably confirm the achievement of improvement, because the grout penetration process is not sufficiently clarified. This investigation proposes a neuronal method of defining spatial distribution of rock hydraulic properties and a fuzzy scheme for estimating their relation with the grout penetration (consumption, localization and filling material). The intelligent method stands as a tool for helping in harmonizing the sealing activities and the medium conditions. The virtual simulation of grouting strategies embraces geology, hydraulic and rock characteristics and the filling process. Important aspects as different pressure injection levels and fracturing systems can be holistically studied using the intelligent environment, resulting in an advantageous, economic, flexible and interactive tool for planning better this critical activity.INTRODUCTION Grouting is a very common method of sealing rock and repairing concrete structures (Butron et al., 2010) and its use in engineering of dam-foundation and tunneling has been documented as very successful (Yang, 2004). Generally speaking, to achieve the closing purpose, boreholes are drilled into the rock mass and grout is injected (under pre-selected pressure) until the fractures around the borehole are filled. The complete filling of these fractures is possible if they are connected to each other in such a way that the remaining water and air can be displaced outside the designed grouting zone (Houlsby, 1990; Kutzner, 1996). Water testing is necessary for evaluating seepage potential and for determining whether grouting is necessary or practical. Regardless of the main reason for the investigations, design of a program for water testing for grouting should consider the type of structure to be built, the geologic conditions at the site and the level of seepage control desired. As information gathered the report must content the fracture openness, number and connectivity, exploratory drill holes orientations, materials situation and a panorama of rock-mass state (quality)."

In Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex, a molybdenite floatation concentrate was produced by selective removal of copper impurities with 7 stages of cleaner floatation banks, that contains around 1% copper and 54.5% molybdenum. Mineralogical studies, physical and chemical characterizations showed that the sample contained 91% molybdenite (MoS2), 2.6% chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), 0.2%Covellite (CuS), 1.6% pyrite (FeS2) and 4.6% other nonmetallic impurities. In the present study, the removal of the copper sulfide was investigated by ferric chloride leaching for achieving a molybdenite concentrate with copper content less than 0.3%. Therefore, the application of response surface methodology (RSM) for modeling and optimization of the influence of three control parameters including ferric chloride (FeCl3) dosage, reaction temperature and reaction time, each varying in five levels, were considered, and the mathematical model for prediction of %Cu removal from molybdenite concentrate was derived. This study showed that RSM could effectively be applied for the modeling of ferric chloride leaching, and finding an economical optimum condition to achieve maximum de-coppering efficiency while consuming minimum leaching reagents. The optimum dissolution conditions to maximize Cu extraction were 200 kg/t for ferric chloride dosage, 120 min for reaction time and 80 °C for reaction temperature with a prediction of 83.20% Cu dissolution. As the Federal government along with individual states continue to grapple with the job of refining a comprehensive energy policy, coal continually stands out as an energy source which heralds a combination of old and new capabilities like an energy planners prophecy, but which is plagued with serious environmental constraints. To determine what level of coal utilization is ultimately possible for states East of the Mississippi, whose high sulfur content coal presents the most paramount of challenges, one must consider product availability, via existing transportation modes, the developing industrial markets and the ability of coal to meet the challenge of becoming an environmentally acceptable fuel. Gasification is emerging as a form of utilization, which during the next twenty years stands a good chance of being able to meet the challenge of making coal an environmentally clean, easily transport-able and usable fuel. It can be argued that, of all the potential ways of utilizing high sulfur coal, coal gasification is perhaps the most expensive, the most financially risky and carries environmental liabilities of its own. Synthetic gas and oil markets will undeniably be a function of price and demand, which, for the purposes of this paper, I'm assuming will begin to merge in the late 1980's and into the 1990's. This is also presuming that public utility commissions will allow favorable price structure ruling so that gasified coal products can be rolled into their respective rate base, much the same as synthetic natural gas from petroleum by-products are currently being priced. The comparative economic markets of coal to gas pro-duct have plenty of time to mature. There is an approximate twelve-year lead time needed to bring coal gasification plants on line which will be able to compete in the market place for natural gas and oil customers.

The main objective of this work was to investigate the effect of binder addition on the geochemical properties of surface paste tailings. Nine leaching columns were prepared following different disposal configurations: non-cemented, non-cemented with cemented layers, and cemented .The proportions of cement by total paste weight were between 0 and 1% for a whole column; the maximum amount of cement in a single layer was 2%. The material used was a sulphide-rich tailings coming from a Canadian hard rock polymetallic mine. The columns have been flushed once a week during 30 weeks. The recovered leachates were analyzed for pH, Eh, conductivity, and a wide range of elements. The drainage rates were monitored during the initial disposal as well as after each column flush. The results show that binder addition can improve the whole environmental performances for some of the studied disposal configurations. The disposal configuration consisting of intercalation of three 2% cement paste layers within non-cemented layers (0.66 wt.% of cement for the whole column), and the configuration with 2% cement added only in the two bottom layers (0,44 wt.% of cement for the whole column), showed the best results in terms of water quality and drainage rates.

The image-based On-line Particle Size Analyzer (OPSA)system has been developed at the University of Utah to measure particle size distributions under plant conditions where overlapped and segregated particles are being transported on a moving belt conveyor. Evaluation of the OPSA system at several plant sites has been completed. The results show a consistent agreement between the particle size distributions obtained from the OPSA system and those obtained from laboratory screen analysis of belt samples. These results and the stable performance of the OPSA system during the field tests suggest that continuous quality control of crushed products is possible using the OPSA system.

As deeper seams are continually mined, methane liberation will continue to increase and must be monitored effectively. To effectively monitor and develop appropriate control technology, methane-liberation patterns must be known. The Bureau of Mines recently completed a study to identify specific patterns of face methane liberation during long- wall mining. Both of the longwall faces surveyed had high methane liberation rates. At one longwall face, most of the methane was liberated during cutting of coal by the shearer mining machine. At the second face, a significant portion of methane was emitted from the face and floor. An effective methane-monitoring system would be different for each longwall panel because of the differences in how the gas is released along the face.

A distribuição granulométrica e consequentemente sua estabilidade são importantes, pois interferem na porosidade e permeabilidade no interior do Alto-Forno, criando assim uma condição adequada e específica de marcha com reflexo na estabilidade da produção de gusa. A Sinterização da ThyssenKrupp Companhia Siderúrgica do Atlântico (TKCSA) foi projetada sem britagem secundária, devido à fase de ajustes no processo operacional e baixa produtividade havia dificuldade para controlar a fração grossa do sinter (> 50 mm), impactando na distribuição granulométrica do sinter. Visando reduzir os desvios da qualidade física, estudou-se a melhor relação da altura de camada x velocidade da esteira encontrando um ponto de equilíbrio entre os níveis de produção e qualidade especificada que, juntamente com o início da operação do britador secundário, resultou na garantia da qualidade física do sinter para os Altos Fornos. Este trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar o desenvolvimento e resultados deste estudo.

The quarrying and related industries of the United States made a large gain in employment (man-hours of work) in 1942 with a somewhat smaller number of men employed than in 1941. This was accomplished chiefly by increasing the number of workdays per man and also by increasing the length of the workday. In spite of the greater volume of work performed, the industry had a more favorable accident-frequency rate in 1942 than in the previous year. Accident and employment reports from operating companies showed that the industry employed 84,270 men for an average of 271 days per man in 1942, with a volume of work of almost 181 million man-hours. The average workshift comprised 7.93 hours, and the number of man-shifts worked totaled nearly 23 million. Injuries from accidents in and about the quarries and plants caused disability to 6,461 employees, 112 of whom died as a result of their injuries, including 28 employees whose lives were lost in a single disaster. The accident-frequency rate in the industry was 35.73 per million man-hours worked, comparing favorably with a rate of 40.11 for the previous year. However, the figure for 1942 included a death rate of 0.62 per million man-hours which, because of the disaster referred to, was considerably higher than the fatality rate of 0.44 for 1941. Had the disaster not occurred, the fatality rate for the industry for 1942 would have been 0.46. The major disaster in which 28 lives were lost occurred on March 26 at the Sandts Eddy quarry of the Lehigh Portland Cement Co. near Easton Pa.

"In the mining industry, rock excavation is the first phase of the comminution process. Downstreamoperations such as secondary breaking, crushing and milling terminate the process, reducing the size of the grains down to the desired particle distribution. In such a cascade process, every process upstream heavily influences all the downstream operations. When rock excavation is carried out by drilling and blasting, a very economic source of energy (the explosive) is used at the utmost upstream; a more expensive source of energy (electricity) is employed for all the downstream phases. This means that managing the correct employ of the explosive energy is a form of managing the whole process, controlling the operational costs and therefore the profitability of the whole business. We simulated this cascade behavior, using as a starting point the experimental data obtained from small-scale block blasting, evaluating the influence of blasting on the grindability of the blasted material. This study showed the reduction in visible (particle size) and invisible fracturing (micro-cracking, resulting in a reduction of the Work Index WI). The particle size distribution for full-scale blasts was estimated by means of algorithm simulation, then we simulated the behavior of the comminution plant fed with the material possessing the characteristics previously estimated. All the costs (drilling, blasting, electric energy for the engines of the crushers and mill) were calculated and charted. The results show a clear curve that allows to estimate the minimum operating expenditure (OPEX) for the whole mine+plant framework. Being the WI dependent on the output on the blast, one can manage the performance and the expenditure of the whole comminution process by adjusting drilling and blasting parameters For any given mine, it is possible to perform a simulation and encounter the minimum OPEX scenario for the comminution process and managerial choices can be oriented accordingly. In a cascade productive chain as mining is, responsible strategic choices must be taken looking at the entire production framework. Compartmentalized managerial staff and budgets for separated production areas are not acceptable anymore. Somehow higher costs upstream can lead to effective decrease in costs and increase in efficiency and productivity of the processes downstream."

Ten years ago: October, 1914, the author had the privilege of giving an illustrated address on investigations of coal-dust explosions1 to this Institute at one session of its fall meeting in Pittsburgh, Pa,. On the following day, the members had the opportunity of seeing a large-scale explosion test at the Experimental Mine near Bruceton, in which the explosion was made to follow a predetermined path by means of rock-dust barriers of various types, which had prevented the explosive waves from reaching the outlets of the mine by the shortest paths.2 There was also shown a ((home-made" rock-dusting machine discharging the dust from a flexible nozzle, and a cement gun operated for the quick erection of a fire or ventilation stopping, such as might be put up after an explosion. Following that paper, there was presented a paper by J. Taffanel, Director of the Lìévin testing station in the Pas de Calais, which reviewed the French coal-dust investigations.3 A paper4 by Howard N. Eavenson contains lists of explosions that occurred in North America and Great Britain, from early in the 19th century to 1912; in France to 1903, and Belgium to 1909. Although explosions still occur, we are hopeful that we have entered a happier freedom from these visitations, as the result of increased knowledge of the causes and means of prevention. Looking back over coal-dust investigations, there appear to have been periods of advance and of stagnation. Coal-dust Investigations From the earliest times of coal mining, which chiefly affected Great Britain as the first nation to take up coal mining on a large scale, to the beginning of the 19th century, no one thought of coal dust as an explosive agency; firedamp was the cause dreaded. As 1979 drew to a close, it was obvious that China would have another good year with output of most industrial products at 3-9% above levels attained in 1978. Most increases were registered on the basis of maximum utilization of existing capacities and nationalization of procedures and methods. There were also distinct improvements in the quality and variety of products. Coal output probably surpassed the 650-Mt level in 1979. Steel output was expected to reach the 35-Mt level, an increase of nearly 10% over 1978. Based on the vast amount of housing and road and project construction, cement production more than likely surpassed 70 Mt. The nonferrous base metal industries improved somewhat in 1978, but actual output levels in recent years may have been a little higher than previously estimated by the outside world. Stagnate world demand slowed growth in the "export metals" sector. Minerals like magnesite and talc were produced at tonnages much larger than previously thought, with gold also falling into this category. Sulfur and pyrite production are still short, although a big pyrite mine was being brought into production. Barite out-put was reportedly up and fluorspar output held its own. Westerners generally concede that difficulties in transportation and power supply are holding back mineral production. Throughout 1979, basic construction continued on the majority of projects started by the Chinese and those few foreign projects contracted before the adjustment of industrial priorities. Foreign Ventures Perspective The foreign connection looms large in China's plan for modernization. In effect, it is an extension of what China wants to do in terms of "walking on two legs"-that is, develop what can be done locally to the fullest extent, then rely on international technology to move into the bigger and more complicated projects. Foreign projects are designed to complement domestic projects rather than replace them. Many foreign projects were started or continued by the Chinese in 1979. Building the necessary infrastructure for the projects is usually a Chinese endeavor and requires Chinese technicians and money. In areas with a strong economic base, this activity proceeds without foreign aid. In other areas, added funds are requested. Foreign funds can come in many forms-equipment technology, low interest loans, equity capital, advance-of-funds on the basis of future delivery in kind, and joint venture money. The Chinese are exploring all these avenues, with the strategy of minimizing foreign exchange needs for individual projects. They feel very uncomfortable with high interest rates, even though interest can be treated as operating ex¬pense rather than capital expense. Then there's the question of rights. Sodion activity data have been obtained for the Na-A1 system for sodium concentrations in aluminum between NN, = 25 . 10-and 300 x 10'. This concentration intert-a2 encompasses those sodium concentrations nor1)zally encountered in aluminum reduction cell operation. The sodium activity data were measured by a two-phase equilibration of sodium between a lead and an aluminam rich phase. The Na-Pb system was emplojed as a reference for the determination of the actiz7itj 0.f sodium. The activity of sodiin in aluminuwz exhibits large positi2.e deviations frorn ideality and a strong dependence, on concentration below NN, = 100 x 1K6. The inteated data indicate that the activity of aluminium is equal to its mole fraction over the range of miscibility of the Na-A1 sgstem. The data on the Na-A1 binary have been combined with experimental data on the cryolite-A1 system at 1025°C to obtain the activities of Na F and AlF, in liquid cryolite oz2er the cornposition 1-ange encountered in aluminum cell operation. The results are in agreement with activities calculated from the NaF-AlF, phase diagram. ALUMINUM is produced commercially by the electrolytic reduction of aluminum oxide dissolved in molten cryolite. There is considerable controversy over the actual mechanism of the discharge processes, but sodium potentials in the systems appear to play an important role in the reduction mechanism. The metal-salt reaction involving NaF and aluminum to produce A1F3 and sodium is responsible for the presence of sodium in the aluminum metal phase. Additional sodium may be produced from the simultaneous deposition of sodium and aluminum at the cathode as a result of a cathodic overvoltage. runert' has suggested that sodium gas at atmospheric pressure would be the result of reaction between cryolite and aluminum at 1000°C. Subsequent investigations have shown that production of sodium at atmospheric pressure does not occur. These later investigations can be conveniently separated into two categories. The first involves sodium, aluminum, and cryolite, in which the sodium activity was measured. The second includes a lead phase for sodium activity measurement. Jander and errmann,' studied the reaction: at 1090°C in alumina crucibles under an atmosphere of dry, oxygen-free nitrogen. The equilibrium constant for the reaction was expressed in terms of concentration. Their results in Fig. 1 show an increase in sodium content of the aluminum with increasing NaF/A1F3 weight ratio. Pearson and waddington3 performed similar experiments at 1000°C. Their results are included in Fig. 1. Dewing and ollinshead have measured the sodium content of aluminum as a function of the NF/AF, ratio at 1025"C, Fig. 1, and ewin' measured the sodium content of the aluminum in a system involving the solid reactants NaF, cryolite, and liquid aluminum. This reaction is different from those discussed above. Two solid phases, NaF and Na3A1F6, and a liquid aluminum phase were present. The sodium concentration in the aluminum was determined by the temperature. Dewing's measurements covered the temperature range 679" to 896°C. This report is intended as a reference for personnel interested in the computer anlaysis of coal-mine-electrical-power systems under either normal operating conditions or fault situations. The procedures developed for this purpose are described and implementation considerations are discussed with respect to the mine-power system. Considerations for choosing a solution technique and a number of examples are included. Procedures described include the Newton-Raphson iterative technique for the analysis of normal operation as well as a non-iterative Z-bus technique for analysis of unbalanced or balanced faults. During program development, strict attention has been given to the inclusion of core and/or time saving techniques such that these algorithms may be implemented on small as well as large computers. Program languages include FORTRAN IV for batch processing applications and APL or BASIC for interactive applications.

IN all special branches of the chemical and metallurgical industries, in which large electric furnaces became necessary for carrying out new processes or for the improvement of old ones, the development of the electric furnaces took place on much the same lines. The endeavors to make a success of a new idea brought forth many ingenious designs, which, however, almost without exception, furnished the proof that the safest and shortest way to practical success is the utmost simplicity of construction of the necessary apparatus. Our knowledge of the qualities of materials for building electric furnaces and of the constituents of the furnace-charges, especially their electric conductivity and their chemical affinity . towards one another at high temperatures, is still far from being complete, and from this fact we must conclude that the smaller the number of elements in the construction of a furnace, the fewer the number of unreliable factors both in the construction and in the operation of the electric furnace. This conclusion deserves special attention when an electric furnace for making steel has to be chosen from the constantly growing number of inventions, inasmuch as the chief con¬stituent of steel, the element iron, is a substance which in its liquid phase has so great an affinity fir those elements which are to be removed from the charge, that it is very difficult to comply with the following conditions: 1, to beat the refining-slag to the highest point of its chemical activity ; to prevent the iron from entering the slaw, or, where this cannot be done, to make it enter so that it finally appears in the end-product

IN the relations that exist between capital and labor in this country, there is a bright as well as a dark side. After many years of distressing conditions of labor and a plentiful supply of propaganda, it is doubtful that the doctrine of the class struggle, however defined and stated, has been embraced by any influential and numerous elements of our population. Extreme and uncivilized methods of conflict, whether they be the labor spy as used by the employer or the sit-down strike by organized, labor, have come to be abandoned as the result of the pressure of sober and distinterested public opinion. Unwise terms of our law of trade unions and the unbridled zeal of its administrators show some slight signs of being revised in the light of 'experience and the protests of the law's own beneficiaries. At the point where labor policy touches economic conditions, the two powerful factions in the American labor movement appear to look with a less friendly eye on the bewildering succession of economic experiments and to have a deep nostalgia for a simpler and more prosperous economy.
