This paper outlines the use of tunneling headwall softeyes for transit construction projects in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) over the past decade. Due to spatial constraints, tunnel boring machines were used to construct the underground tunnels requiring the design of launch and exit shafts with headwall softeyes to facilitate tunneling operations. Variable ground conditions and shaft geometries lead to the development of innovative headwall and tunnel softeye design applications using fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) elements (beams, reinforcing bars, and tiebacks). This paper outlines the challenges and benefits associated with designing and constructing shafts using various systems. Lessons learned throughout design and construction of more than 20 structures over the past 10 years are outlined. The constructability challenges with using FRP and design performance are also discussed. For over a decade, the City of Toronto has been expanding its metropolitan transit network with a variety of new transit construction projects. Two recent projects in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) for underground infrastructure include the Toronto York Spadina Subway Extension and the Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Transit project. These add a total of 31 new stations and 18.6 km (11.5 miles) of underground transit (TTC 2017) (EllisDon 2016). Due to ground conditions and spatial constraints of existing surface infrastructure, these projects utilized tunnel boring machines (TBMs) to construct the underground tunnels requiring the design of various types of shafts and headwalls to facilitate underground tunneling operations. To allow for tunneling through the headwalls, these shafts were designed with “softeyes” - a section of the wall without metal reinforcement that allows the TBMs to tunnel through.

"Approximately 32 per cent of the worldÆs total gold production has come from greenstone belts (Frimmel, 2008). In these regions numerous small to large, quartz vein-associated gold deposits are hosted in metamorphic rocks ranging from lower greenschist to granulite facies. Historical exploration has focused its efforts on rocks of greenschist to lower amphibolite facies because these seem to contain the most deposits. Consequently, these regions are now reaching mature brownfield status, particularly in developed nations, and finding new deposits is becoming progressively more difficult. In comparison, regions of similar tectonic setting, but instead containing high-grade metamorphic rocks of mid-amphibolite to granulite facies, have received little attention because the first explorers found fewer deposits there.However, these regions certainly do contain some very significant gold deposits such as Hemlo in Canada (~684 t Au), Renco in Zimbabwe (~31 t Au mined since 1980), the very profitable Challenger deposit in South Australia (~36 t Au; recovered + reserve + resource), and the most recently discovered Tropicana deposit in Western Australia (~182 t Au; reserve + resource). High-grade metamorphic terrains therefore offer explorationists an excellent opportunity to move onto relatively green fields within developed nations, which carry less risk associated with development. However, explorationists have comparatively little knowledge of the geological controls on gold distribution in high-grade terranes because: industry experience lies in traditional lode-style gold deposits these gold deposits are geologically more complex there has simply been minimal research conducted on these deposits as a holistic group.Furthermore, research conducted in the last five years has shown us that the previous widely accepted model for gold genesis in these terranes, the crustal continuum model, is incorrect. Here, I discuss features from several gold deposits hosted in high-grade metamorphic rocks and use these to define two categories for explorationists to consider: deposits that formed prior to peak metamorphism (metamorphosed gold deposits) deposits that formed well after peak metamorphism (post-metamorphic gold deposits). "New contracts for 65 million long tons of coking coal valued at over $900 million, over the next 15 years, herald the rebirth of Alberta's coal industry. The industry is optimistic that export orders may reach 20 million tons per annum by the mid-1970's. Coal will be extracted from underground and surface mines and it is expected that the total labour force will double from the present 1,200 men within the next two years. Ali the health hazards associated with coal mining are likely to be encountered and it will be incombent on the Provincial Department of Health to specify the standards which relate to health and environment where no such standards have previously existed. This paper examines some of the problems which are being encountered in setting up an environmental health program and reviews the practicability of environmental monitoring methods, with special reference to respirable dust."

Two bored piles with base grouting are loaded axially and the results are used to compare with numerical analyses. One compressive pile with a diameter of 2 meters is drilled through clay deposit and into bedrock to a depth of 13.7 meters. One tensile pile with a diameter of 1.5 meters is drilled through the same clay deposit and into bedrock to a depth of 17 meters. Both piles are installed with monitoring system such as rebar strain meters, concrete strain gauges and extensometers. The monitored data during pile load test are used to obtain average frictional stress (t) a displacement (z) curve, pile tip bearing (q) as well as pile head load (p) and a displacement (s) curve. FLAC3D is used to simulate the pile loading and base grouting. The soil and bedrock are modeled with Mohr-Coulomb. The parameters of the constitutive law are established from soil biaxial tests and rock bore hole deformation tests. The pile is assumed as an elastic body. The interface element is used to simulate the pile/soil interface and pile/rock interface. The numerical results are compared with the pile load test in terms of t-z curve, q-z curve and p-s curve. Finally, the pile base grouting is simulated and the uplift is analyzed. The result from this study is promising and the numerical modeling is successful.

NO reasonably well-informed person believes that the role of minerals, both metallic and nonmetallic, will be any less important in the future than it has been in the past. The contrary is true. Industrialization is based on mineral resources and man's ability to make use of them. A nation's standard of living, its political and military power, will continue to depend largely upon the extent to which it is industrialized-and minerals are the raw materials both of the machine and the power to run the machine. Minerals are also the raw materials of human health and stamina. The world's healthiest, most vigorous, and most long-lived peoples have always been those that have lived in regions of the globe where the earth is rich, and kept rich, in the phosphates and other minerals required for the production of the so-called growth foods. Only a small proportion of the land surface of the globe is suitable under any circumstances for large-scale production of these and other essential foods. As things stand, only a part of this land is capable of such production either because the soil minerals have been exhausted by cultivation, or because they never existed in the soil in sufficient quantities.

Introduction In the Early part of 1930 the Ontario Research Foundation was asked by the Minister of Mines, the Hon. Charles McCrea, K.C., M.P.P., to undertake a technical and economic investigation of the Northern Ontario lignite deposit. This investigation has been under way since June, 1930, and has necessitated considerable work at the deposit, in the laboratories of the Foundation, and at test plants in Europe. All the work has been carried out in active co-operation with the Provincial Department of Mines, the Deputy Minister, Mr. T. F. Sutherland, and several of his technical colleagues being associated with members of the staff of the Foundation on the Advisory Committee, which has met at frequent intervals to co-ordinate and direct the various lines of research. An interim report was made to the Minister of Mines by the Director of the Foundation, Dr. H. B. Speakman, at the end of December, 1932, and is at present under consideration by the Minister. This report deals with the extent and character of the deposit, the methods and costs of mining, and the methods and costs of processing raw lignite, the characteristics of certain lignite products, and the technology and economics of present fuel utilization by railways, industry, and domestic users in northern Ontario. It is not the purpose of the author to discuss in this paper either the geology of the deposit or the economics of the mining, processing, and utilization of lignite, but rather to deal briefly with some of the technical problems investigated by the Foundation during the study of the characteristics and methods of utilization of Northern Ontario lignite. Some mention, however, of the work carried out to define the extent of the deposit is a prerequisite to any discussion of the nature of the lignite.

During the 116th National Western Mining Conference and Exhibition in Denver, CO, the host city was often referred to as world?s mining capital, so it was fitting that the conference looked at the mining industry through a global lens. In the current world economy, the mining industry must keep a sharp focus on such things as commodity prices and global supply and demand as well as local issues that can have a dramatic impact on a mine?s social license to operate. In short, companies should mine locally but think globally. During the three-day conference at the Colorado Convention Center, a range of global and local issues that effect the industry were discussed. A record 1,144 people attended the conference.

THE Workmen's Compensation Ace defines Silicosis as "a fibrocic condition of the lungs caused by the inhalation of silica dust sufficient co produce a lessened capacity for work". This fibrocic condition muse exhibit a specific appearance in the X-ray picture of the chest-an appearance which is not characteristic of several lung conditions which can cause lessened capacity for work and which are not due co silicosis. The layman is sufficiently familiar with this subject co know chat, as far as our knowledge goes, quartz is one of the principal objectionable factors in the production of this condition. He should also know that silicosis respects neither geographical nor industrial boundaries. It is as much a factor in some industrial processes (e.g. foundry work, sandblasting) as it is in mines handling ores containing quartz. Its development co a recognizable stage is usually a matter of many years. As yet, its cure is unknown. Its prevention is possible in varying degrees. The layman should also know that the development of fibrosis may be accelerated by breathing in, or living in, any atmosphere containing dust. Few normal adults, particularly those above a certain age, have clear lungs, and fibrosis in varying degrees is noted in the farmer, the steel worker, the clerk, and many others in varied occupations. It is not restricted to miners. Medical and industrial journals, and at times the press, are crammed with data pertaining to this subject, much of which is misinformation. This is particularly true of certain !laces where the preventive and compensation measures for the good o those earning their livelihood in an industry in which silicosis may be contracted are not so far advanced as in our own Province. A great many of these publishings are alarming to the layman. They leave him with the impression that he is taking his life in his hands if he elects to work underground, particularly in a gold mine-that he has at once sold his heritage of health and chat sooner or later he will succumb to the ravages of this ailment. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Actually, under present conditions in Ontario mines, a very small percentage of the men employed ever become impaired by silicosis to the extent chat they must withdraw from the industry. I propose to tell you briefly something of this subject as it affects our mines.

A new method for estimating ground vibrations caused by pile driving was developed as a result of a vibration monitoring program performed for a large pile driving project. The method is accurate, rational and theoretically based starting with energy actually transmitted to the pile (not the rated or operating hammer energy). This energy is then assumed to be transmitted to the soil in the form of surface waves that attenuate from both geometric and material damping. The main input parameters for this method include the energy transmitted to the pile and the dynamic properties of the soil (wave velocity, material damping, and unit weight). In this study we concurrently measured both: (1) pile driving of 14-in.-square, 65-ft-long precast concrete piles with a Pile Driving Analyzer?, and (2) vibration levels at various distances away from the piles during driving. A geotechnical study for the site was also performed that included measurement of the dynamic soil properties using both crosshole and seismic cone testing. This paper presents the data obtained from the study and compares the results to the values estimated using this new method. Vibrations from pile driving is a serious matter that impacts virtually every pile driving project. It is important that accurate methods for estimating ground vibrations be available to engineers and contractors.

THE chief object in presenting this paper on bentonite is to attract general attention to one of the least known and most neglected industrial minerals of Canada, a mineral of extensive commercial possibilities, as evidenced by its development and exploitation in other countries, principally in the United States and Germany; countries upon which some of our most important Canadian industries are dependent for their supply of special clays, such as Fuller's earth and activated bentonite. It was in view of these conditions and the knowledge of the presence of large quantities of bentonite in the Canadian West that the work here reported on was under-taken. While the investigational studies have not been completed, the results indicate that among the many samples tested there are some of real merit and industrial importance. While it has been the author's privilege to examine deposits and samples of bentonite from all of the Western provinces, his chief activities in the field and in research studies have naturally been confined largely to Saskatchewan materials. Notwithstanding this, however, this paper is presented in the hope that it may stimulate a more general interest in, and study of, Canadian bentonites as a whole, a matter of such importance that provincial boundary lines should be overlooked. GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF BENTONITE According to Schurecht and Donda (1), bentonite is commonly composed of the mineral montmorillonite, (Mg,Ca)O.Al203 5SiO2 .nH2O, though some are known to consist of beidellite, Al2O3 3SiO2.nH2O: where n is approximately 4, and in certain cases the Al2O3 may in part be replaced by Fe2O3. For present purposes, however, it may be sufficient to state that, in general, bentonite is a "soapy' clay-like mineral or group of minerals composed largely of hydrous aluminium silicate, but frequently carrying small percentages of the alkalies, alkaline earths, and free silica, as well as silicates, gypsum, and other admixed detritus such that purification is usually necessary.

Platinum-group metal (PGM) converter matte from the Stillwater Complex, MT, was subjected to chemical and biological leaching in an effort to upgrade the matte by decreasing the Cu and Ni content. Copper and NL extractions were optimized in a two-stage chemical leach. Atmospheric pressure sulfuric acid leaching removed over 90 pct of the Ni and Fe in the first stage, while 95 to 98 pct of the Cu was removed is the second stage using an acidified cupric chloride leach. This two-stage leach, followed by an elemental sulfur removal step, decreased the weight of the matte by 90 pct. The combined Cu and Ni content was reduced from 65 pct to less than 20 pct, while the PGM content was increased from less than 2 pct to 26 pct. Biological oxidation using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans also proved to be an effective method for removing Cu and Ni. Over 90 pct of the sulfide was oxidized and 99 pct of the Cu and Ni were solubilized, leading to a 60 pct reduction of sample mass during the 17 week bio-oxidation of the Stillwater converter matte. The final residue, after removal of jarosite that accumulated during bio-oxidation, contained less than 3 pct combined Cu and Ni and 6 pct MM.

Definition and delineation of in-pit ore and waste material are the most significant tasks for an open pit production geologist; adding or destroying value in the mining value chain. Anglo American’s Mogalakwena Platinum mine, an open pit operation in South Africa moving 100 Mt/a, has recognised the value of improved material definition and is in the process of changing from blasthole to reverse circulation (RC) sampling for in-pit grade control. This is aimed at obtaining more representative samples, which are required to maximise ore recovery, minimise waste dilution and to increase the accuracy and confidence of production forecasts. Early in the project, it was realised that the key risks for implementing RC grade control were related to change management processes, rather than failure of technology. Recognising the importance of this issue, Mogalakwena chose an integrated implementation approach that incorporates all stakeholders of the mining cycle in order to develop a process that delivers maximum value and is sustainable within an active mining environment. The following core goals were addressed over five phases of project implementation: extensive definition and design of integrated project implementation, comprising: project buy-in and ownership from all key stakeholders, including survey, geology, mine planning, drill and blast, load and haul, maintenance, supply chain and finance; and detailed analysis of all potential issues and possible solutions, allocated to stakeholders as part of the scoping process; optimising hole patterns and drilling procedures, focusing on delivering maximum value for minimum cost using multiple scenario analysis from borehole data and operational sequencing requirements; and evaluation of lessons learnt during project implementation in order to optimise the technical solution and operational efficiencies. Although this project is not yet finalised, Mogalakwena Platinum Mine is already providing a blueprint for the effective development, implementation and optimisation of sustainable in-pit grade control RC drilling for other open pit mines within Anglo American plc.

"The recovery of gold by gravity from grinding circuits differs from virtually all other gravity recovery approaches in that stage (or unit) recoveries are low, typically 1 to 5%, but overall recoveries are generally in the 25 to 60% range, because individual gold particles are presented many times to the primary recovery unit. Full-scale recovery is difficult to predict from benchscale tests. Further, maximizing metallurgical recovery is generally not the primary objective, because of the more efficient downstream recovery circuit (flotation or cyanidation). In this paper, a new concept, the gravity recovery effort, is presented to assist in the design and optimization of gold gravity circuits. It is defined as the product of the circulating load treated by the primary gravity unit, the recovery of this unit, and the gold room recovery. Predicted gold recovery is linked to the recovery effort, the size distribution of gravity recoverable gold (GRG), the dimensionless retention time in the mill and the partition curve of GRG. A case study of economic optimization of the gravity recovery effort is presented. INTRODUCTIONPredicting gold gravity recovery from grinding circuits has always been a hit-and-miss exercise. The problem can be traced to the highly variable gravity recoverable gold (GRG) content of ores, high GRG circulating load, fraction of the circulating load treated, and performance of primary gravity recovery and gold room. Late Cretaceous Blue Spur Conglomerate preserved as isolated remnants at Gabriels Gully, Weatherstones, Forsyth, Waitahuna Gully and Adams Flat was deposited during the intiation and early stages of extensional movement on the Tuapeka Fault zone at each locality. The deposits represent successive courses of a single fluvial system flowing across the Tuapeka Fault zone from the up-thrown (northeast) block. Each course, beginning with the channel at Gabriels Gully, was abandoned as a result of uplift-induced defeated antecedence in favour of a new course farther to the southeast around the southeast-propagating tip of the Tuapeka Fault zone. Schist and quartz in the conglomerate was derived ultimately from schistose rocks northeast of the Tuapeka Fault zone. Caples Terrane greywacke detritus in the middle and upper beds of the conglomerate was probably recycled from pre-existing sedimentary cover on the up-thrown block, following initiation of uplift on the Tuapeka Fault zone at each locality. Most of the gold is derived from vein sources in Otago Schist rocks to the north, and/or associated placers. Hydrothermal veins at Waipori, Hindon, Barewood, and Macraes are the most likely primary sources. There is no evidence to support previous interpretations of deposition by river systems flowing from the southwest, or axially along the Tuapeka Fault zone from northwest to southeast. High gold grades within Blue Spur Conglomerate should have a linear trend more or less similar to the orientation of the host channels, but are likely to drop off rapidly to the southwest. Extensions of the conglomerate-filled channels are unlikely to be preserved, but there is a strong probability that younger placers recycled from the former channels exist.

BOULDER COUNTY, Colorado, ranked during the war years and until the end of 1918 as one of the foremost tungsten-producing districts of the world. In 1919 production fell off drastically, due to heavy importations of foreign ores from China, Burma and South America. So large were the imports that even after the enactment of a protective tariff in 1922 of 45c. per lb. on tungsten metal, equivalent to $7.14 per unit (201b.) of tungstic acid? (WO,), the stocks of metal in this country were extensive enough to supply the demands of industry, and prevent general resumption of mining by domestic producers. Even today there are only two producers in the Boulder district though at one time as many as twenty separate companies were in operation. About the same ratio holds for other tungsten-producing districts in the country, including California and Nevada. Total consumption of tungsten concentrate in terms of 60 per cent WO2 in the United States amounted to approximately 3790 tons in 1928, according to Frank L. Hess.' Of this amount, domestic mines contributed 1290 tons, and the rest, 2500 tons, was imported. Yet in 1917, with tungsten concentrate selling at $20 per unit, the Boulder district alone produced 2707 tons, indicating the effect of enhanced ore price upon production. It is believed by American tungsten miners that, given a sufficiently high tariff, all the demands of industry can be met by domestic production without placing a prohibitive burden on consumers. For instance, in steel manufacturing the percentage of tungsten entering into the manufacture is so small that, ?regardless of cost, it can constitute but a small fraction of the cost of steel to the buyer.

US 4,190,436 - In the cyanide leaching of gold ore in tailing or ore dump piles, or gold ore in vats or on pads, the ore is agitated and oxygenated by introducing timed bursts of air, along with cyanide in a cyclic or regulated manner. The leach liquor is drained from the material by providing a continuous flow of air. Fines are homogenously mixed, thereby reducing channelling In the ore bed. The generic structure of our bimesogens is shown in and for a typical blue-phase mixture of the type we describe here. We use mixtures of the ratio 33.4% (n =2.6), 34.1% (n =6.57), 36.6% (n= 11.15) with of the high twisted power (HTP) agent BD H1381(available from Merck Chemicals and described in ref. We then studied the electric-field dependency of the selective reflection in BP I* at 20.7 °C by applying increasing and the decreasing pulsed alternating current (a.c.) electric fields (100 Hz).

"INTRODUCTION Shaft mines, coal and noncoal alike, have a common hoisting problem that remains largely unsolved - how to obtain a mechanical device that will suspend a cage or skip in a mine shaft if the hoisting rope should break or become detached from the cage or skip and that will function effectively under all conditions of service. Safety catches, or safety dogs, as they are commonly named, are installed on nearly all mine cages and many skips operating in American mines, but often, if the hoisting rope breaks, the cage or skip falls to the bottom of the shaft in spite of safety devices, causing much property damage and often fatalities.Available information relative to safety catches for mine cages and skips, desirable characteristics of safety catches and methods of testing safety catches to determine whether they are functioning correctly has been assembled in this publication for the convenience of those responsible for the safe operation of mine cages end skips and, more particularly, to focus attention on the need for a device that actually will stop and suspend a falling cage or skip under all conditions of use and do it without killing or maiming the occupants."
