To overcome the difficulty of accurately judging the load state of a wet ball mill during the grinding process, a method of mill load identification based on the singular value entropy of the modified ensemble empirical mode decomposition (MEEMD) and a probabilistic neural network (PNN) classifier is proposed. First, the MEEMD algorithm is used to decompose the vibration signals recorded under different load states to obtain the intrinsic mode components, and a correlation coefficient threshold is used to select the sensitive mode components that characterize the state of the original signal. Second, singular value decomposition is used to obtain the singular value entropy. Finally, the load state of the wet ball mill is judged based on the magnitude of the singular value entropy. A characteristic mill load vector is constructed from the singular value entropies of the cylinder vibration signals recorded under different load conditions and is used as the input to a PNN, which then outputs the predicted ball mill load state; in this way, a load state identification model is established. Grinding experiments are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, showing that the method can accurately identify the load state of a wet ball mill. ()

As a part of its safety program the United States Bureau of Mines has fostered the development, use, and improvement of portable electric mine lamps. Although there is still need for better illumination in mines and the replacement of open lights has been slow, improvement in electric cap lamps and increase in their use indicate one phase of recent progress toward safer and more efficient mining This report is the result of a recent survey of electric-lamp installations in the Alabama mining; district; it shows the misuse, increase in use, and relation to certain classes of accidents of these installations.

After a three-year period characterized by inflation, recession, depressed metal prices, lack of demand, enormous world inventories, and rapidly escalating costs, the Canadian mining industry is showing welcome signs of recovery. A rise in world metal prices and particularly strong demand for gold, uranium, and coal have stimulated the industry in early 1979. In this atmosphere of growing optimism, over 3000 mineral industry executives, economists, geologists, and mining and metallurgical engineers convened in Montreal, April 26-29, for Canada's largest mining convention, the Annual General Meeting of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.

Introduction In terms of the world's recoverable coal reserves, Canada ranks 10th, providing 0.6% of the world's total. The US is first with 27.8% and the Soviet Union follows with 24.1%. Figure 1 shows the principal coal mines in Canada. Several provinces contain substantial coal deposits, but the largest deposits are found in the western provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan. Conservatively, 90% of the lignitic, 80% of high volatile bituminous, and nearly 100% of subbituminous, and low and medium volatile bituminous coals are located in these three provinces. During the past decade, Canadian coal production of all types increased from 18.8 Mt (2 million st) in 1972, to 25 Mt (28 million st) in 1975, to 61 Mt (66 million st) in 1984. About 38 Mt (43 million st) of this output was classified at thermal and 23 Mt (25 million st) as coking and metallurgical coal (Table 1). The three western provinces currently produce 57 Mt (62 million st) of coal - 95% of Canada's total. The remaining 3.6 Mt (4 million st) (5%) is produced in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick on the east coast. The majority of western coal (98%) is produced by surface mining methods. On the east coast, though, mining is predominantly underground and only 15% is produced on the surface. In 1985, Canada exported close to 28 Mt (30 million st) of metallurgical coal and thermal coal. During the same period, 15 Mt (16 million st) of coal were imported, mostly from western US for use in Ontario and Quebec. Almost 60% of the imported coal was used for thermal applications. The remaining 40% was metallurgical coal for the steel industry. It is generally cheaper to import coal into central and eastern Canada from the eastern US to augment local supplies rather than from western Canada. Neste trabalho estudou-se o comportamento cinético das transformações de fases por nucleação e crescimento nas interfaces (faces, arestas e vértices), das matrizes poliedricas de Kelvin, Voronoi e de Monte Carlo, através da simulação computacional. Com o objetivo principal de comparar os resultados obtidos das simulações com os modelos analíticos de Johnson e Mehl, Kolmogorov e Avrami (JMAK), e de John W. Cahn. As matrizes foram geradas por modelos estocásticos e através do método de crescimento do Cone Causal. Em engenharia o entendimento do comportamento das transformações de fases por nucleação e crescimento são importantes para prever os possíveis locais de nucleação, assim como no entendimento do comportamento dos constituintes presentes do diagrama ferro carbono, na decomposição da austenita, no processo de recristalização, entre outros. Desta forma, o modelamento computacional foi utilizado para o estudo das transformações de fases por nucleação e crescimento, obtendo como resultados a fração volumétrica, o caminho microestrutural e a contiguidade, ambos resultados foram importantes para a caracterização microestrutural e para descrever a distribuição dos núcleos no espaço. Com os resultados obtidos observou-se que se os núcleos estão bem distribuídos nas interfaces o impingement será mais fraco, levando as simulações de Voronoi e de Kelvin a corroborarem com o modelo analítico de JMAK, já o Modelo de Monte Carlo, não apresentou o mesmo comportamento, ou seja, ficou evidenciado que nem sempre a aleatoriedade vai ser válida para todos os casos. Foi constatado também que se aumenta consideravelmente a quantidade de núcleos, a distribuição perde a característica de aleatoriedade e passa a se comportar como clusters, corroborando com o modelo analítico de Cahn.

In High Pressure Die Casting a molten metal is injected through a thin gate into the cast cavity. High injection pressures and high gate velocities create atomization phenomena which can negatively affect the final quality of the cast. In order to control atomization process it is essential to understand the atomization patterns and the two-phase flowfield that exist at the gate exit. In the present work, 2D numerical simulations of the flow of molten Magnesium through a high aspect-ratio rectangular gate are performed using a water analogue for an open and closed cavity. The numerical simulations made use of VOF-type (Eulerian) physical models and Lagrangian models. Further, a sub-grid scale model was implemented that, in conjunction with VOF-type equations can efficiently predict the general atomization pattern without the need for high-resolution grids. The numerical results were compared to experimental data for validation.

The standard enthalpy of formation, low-temperature heat capacities, and enthalpy increments above 298 K were determined by the Federal Bureau of Mines for synthetic dawsonite [NaA1C03(OH)21. The enthalpy of formation was determined by hydrochloric acid solution calorimetry, with the result ?Hf°298 = -469.4±0.7 kcal/mole. The low-temperature heat capacities were determined from 6 to 307 K by adiabatic calorimetry. Tabulated are low-temperature values of Cp°, S°, and H.-Ho° from 3 to 298 K. The derived entropy at 298 K is S298 = 31.55±0.3 cal/deg mole. Enthalpy increments above 298 K were obtained by copper-block drop calorimetry. Tabular data of Cp°, S°, H°-H°298, -(G°-H°298)/T, ?Hf°, ?Gf°, and log Kf are given from 298 to 477 K. Enthalpies and Gibbs energies of decomposition are also reported.

Grinding Mill Operation and Maintenance - Central to Asset Management Since 2005, RME has pursued a vision for a new grinding plant operational paradigm, made possible by RME's latest Mill Relining Systems. At some sites, new liners degrade SAG mill performance. The variables include mill volume loss, rotational speed limitations (ball strike) and liner designs developed for longer and longer life but without a backward glance at metallurgical consequences of whole plant performance. Freshly relined mills can initially deliver as little as 80 per cent of their maximum throughput, that maximum occurring toward the end of the liners' wear life. RME's proposition is to see new liners designed for maximum commercial performance. This may mean more frequent mill relines but with liners designed to yield optimum grinding, metallurgical and profitability performance, not maximum life. In other words, mill liner profiles and relining speed become key profitability contributors and not simply 'must do' maintenance functions and costs. This paper includes a short history of RME's Mill Relining System development (Appendix A). These are the enabling technologies which permit more frequent liner exchange without incurring additional downtime imposts. The body of this paper outlines RME's vision of a 'liner profile vs. profitability' commercial model, underpinned by the rigour of PAS 55-1:2008 Asset Management Part 1: Specification for the optimised management of physical assets. The technical elements can be developed either intuitively (based on plant experience) or by using a combination of new measurement and modelling technologies. These new measurement and modelling tools provide the opportunity to predict the optimum technical solution for the maximum commercial outcome. Much of this can be modelled off-line, in the virtual world, before asking senior management to commit to an expensive liner experiment. The potential benefits are compelling.

This paper presents an approach to define and determine the extent of material damage due to subsidence from underground coal mining. The basic steps involved in the development of adequate criteria have been enumerated together with the approaches and methodologies used.

Certain deposits of incoherent materials which are near the surface and exploitable by open-pit mining may be characterized in real time before they are mined through an analysis of ground-surface imagery. If the slice to be stripped is not overly thick, in fact, surface texture and color properties may be extrapolated to its entire thickness. Image analysis techniques to process ground surface images acquired in situ(or in the laboratory shortly after their acquisition) which yield pattern vectors representative of RGB color component distributions and HSB texture parameters have been developed. The techniques were applied to a mineral sandy ore deposit containing three different lithotypes. Geostatistical analyses showed that the data used to characterize the lithotypes were reliable. The correct recognition of the lithotypes was carried out using a multi-barycenter classification algorithm. Such in situ image-analysis procedures open the way to the proper selection of the ore to be mined, or the proper way for run of mine (r.o.m).processing, or the appropriate blend to be processed before or at the same time as the mining process itself is enacted.

Através da realização de testes de laminação de 4 tipos de aço tornou-se possível reduzir a heterogeneidade das propriedades mecânicas e definir os parâmetros de processo.

"La demanda de metales y agotamiento de las reservas conocidas en el mundo, genera un incremento en las actividades de exploración minera orientadas a descubrir nuevas fuentes de producción mineral, ya sea en áreas vírgenes o en zonas o distritos mineros ya conocidos. En ese sentido, el descubrimiento de minas, ya sean grandes o medianas, se va restringiendo cada vez más al estudio cuidadoso de zonas mineralizadas,con expresiones superficiales poco impresionantes. Por ello, el presente artículo señala la aplicación de métodos de exploración minera en el Perú. El proceso comprende 6 fases: En la primera se debe encontrar las provincias metalogenéticas que suponen la existencia de yacimientos importantes a gran profundidad. La segunda fase determina la naturaleza, posición, orientación, longitud y costo de los trabajos de exploración primaria, tales como socavones, sondajes diamantinos, trincheras, etc., encaminados a probar la existencia de mineralización comercial en profundidad. La tercera fase concreta la posición, dimensiones y profundidad del objetivo, reduciendo a un mínimo el costo total de los trabajos de exploración primaria requeridos para probar la existencia o no existencia de un yacimiento comercial. La cuarta responde a la vigilancia y atención del geológo. La quinta fase comprende e inicio de una vida operativa."

Na conformação de plásticos de alto desempenho, cuja demanda cresce continuamente nos setores automotivo e de eletrodomésticos, é necessário aços com elevada resistência mecânica e excelente polibilidade. O aço DIN 1.2711 e suas modificações são materiais encontrados no mercado que atendem tais necessidades, porém não foram projetados para essa aplicação. O presente trabalho discute as características de um novo aço desenvolvido especificamente para moldes plásticos de alto desempenho. Foram produzidos em escala piloto, dois lingotes de 55 kg, sendo um deles o DIN 1.2711 que serviu de referência, e o outro com a nova composição química. A curva TRC dos materiais foi determinada por dilatometria, e sua usinabilidade avaliando o volume de material removido em relação ao desgaste da ferramenta de corte em fresamento. Caracterizações microestruturais por MO, MEV e dureza também foram realizadas. O Novo Aço apresenta elevada homogeneidade microestrutural e de dureza, boa temperabilidade e usinabilidade superior ao DIN 1.2711. A segunda etapa constou na produção de um bloco forjado em escala industrial a partir de um lingote de 35 toneladas, e na validação dos dados experimentais em empresas fabricantes ou usuários de moldes, as quais comprovaram a superior usinabilidade do Novo Aço em aproximadamente 50% ao DIN 1.2711. Devido à boa combinação de propriedades de manufatura o Novo Aço se torna uma interessante opção para o aumento da competitividade das ferramentarias e usuários finais de moldes plásticos.

In laboratory experiments, the Bureau of Mines investigated melting, quenching, and sulfuric acid leaching of alumina from mixtures of albite and anorthite, and from anorthosites containing 26 to 32 percent alumina. Variations in pouring temperature, quenching and leaching conditions, were studied with respect to the extraction of alumina and impurities. Virtually all of the alumina was dissolved by leaching melted and quenched California anorthosite in boiling 16-percent sulfuric acid solutions for 15 to 30 minutes. The leach solutions were readily separable from the solid residue by conventional thickening and filtration techniques. Only 2 to 5 grams of SiO2, Fe2O3, or CaO dissolved per 100 grams of alumina. The quantity of SiOz in solution varied inversely with the duration of the leach and with the concentration of the H2SO4 solution used. Melted and quenched Wyoming and Minnesota anorthosites with SiO2:CaO weight ratios of 4.3 and 3.2, respectively, were less amenable to sulfuric acid leaching than California anorthosite with an SiO2:CaO weight ratio of 5.3. However, excellent results were obtained on the Wyoming and Minnesota anorthosites by the addition of SiO2 to these materials before melting, in quantities sufficient to adjust the SiO2:CaO weight ratios of the furnace charges to between 4 and 6.

"The Soviet Union has enormous reserves of iron ore in many different kinds of deposits that are widely distributed in this vast land area. The present iron ore industry is based mainly on deposits in Precambrian cherty iron-formation at Krivoy Rog, Kursk and Murmansk. Extensive reserves of both naturally enriched hematite ore and magnetite iron-formation in these areas alone could sup-ply all the domestic ore required for several hundred years.Many contact metasomatic magnetite deposits discovery in recent years in the eastern Ural Mountain belt and east of the Kusnetsov basin in Siberia are being developed, with ore reserves measured in billions of tons. Oolitic limonite-chamosite-siderite ores of Cretaceous and younger age at Kerch on the Black Sea and around the east and southern perimeter of the West Siberian basin constitute some of the largest concentrations of iron in the world. These sedimentary ores are low grade, of poor quality and difficult to beneficiate. Banded jasper magnetite and hematite iron-formation in volcanic rocks of Devonian age in Kazakhstan and along the Mongolian border are of special geoloica1 significance.Iron deposits in the Krivoy Rog and Kursk areas were examined and a large number of geologists discussed their work on deposits in many other parts of the Soviet Union during the writer's seven-week study tour of mines and research institutes in Moscow, Leningrad, Novosibirsk in Siberia and Kiev in the Ukraine. The descriptive geology of iron deposits of useable ore and of marginal material has been well documented in the course of systematic work and a large number of scientists are studying fundamental problems on the origin and treatment of iron ore."

Although for many years considerable attention has been given to devising safe and efficient methods of using explosives, with some success, relatively little has been done to provide satisfactory storage facilities for them. This was known long before the present war began, but it was emphasized during the past 30 months? inspections of explosive magazines by employees of the Bureau of Mines in administration of the Federal Explosives Act of December 26, 1941. These inspections have revealed woeful in adequacy as well as definite hazards and the urgent need for obtaining better storage facilities either by remodeling old magazines or constructing ink new ones that would afford suitable protection for the contents against theft, fire, deterioration, and detonation. The purpose of this paper is to offer suggestions and to show by sketches and drawings some of the fundamental features of suitable magazines. Type of construction and available materials differ with different; localities, but the information herein contained can be applied to most magazines, whether already constructed or the construct: on of which is planned. It is hoped that this information will be helpful and will aid persons who are trying to provide suitable storage for explosives end detonators. It is also hoped that States and cities will be made aware of the unbelievable laxity practiced in storing explosives in the United States and will take some remedial action.

For shortwall mining to be profitable, the additional capital investment of about $1 million for shortwall roof supports must be offset by decreased total operating costs and/or increased coal production. The Bureau of Mines therefore conducted a demonstration project to compare shortwall and room-and-pillar mining. Daily two-shift production from the bureau of Mines-Beth-Elkhorn Corp. shortwall demonstration n project averaged 975 tons of raw coal, compared with 905 tons from a room-and-pillar unit operating undo r similar conditions. The estimated direct operating costs for the shortwall and room-and-pillar unite were $4.21 and $4.03 pier ton, respectively. The profitability of the shortwall system was found to depend not only on the increased depreciation cost of the powered roof supports and the decreased cost of supplies and materials but also on such factors as the fixed and variable indirect costs and the selling price of the coal. Shortwall mining was demonstrated to be a viable alternative to room-and-pillar mining.

Sulfide-rich scale occurs in steam and water lines at the Ohaaki geothennal field,Taupo Volcanic Zone, New Zealand. Precious metals show very high concentrations around areas ofpressure reduction (Au 15500 ppm, Ag 68800 ppm). Pyrrhotite dominates at the orifice plate due to low PH2s1PH2 conditions. Sulfide mineralogy in the scales is consistent with alteration mineralogy of the reservoir rocks. Separated steam then produces a mainly pyrite/magnetite mineralogy, with lesser chalcopyrite, where textures reflect high flow rates and high levels of supersaturation. This study outlines the effect that pressure and subsequent temperature decreases have on the mineralogy, chemistry and textures of sulfide scales.

This report describes a microcomputer-based instrumentation system for structural monitoring of the circular, concrete-lined Silver Shaft in northern Idaho, The 1-ft-thick concrete lining and surrounding rock mass were instrumented with a total of 12 multiple-point borehole extensometers, 16 pressure cells, 22 concrete embedment strain gauges, and 12 thermistors. The instruments were distributed among four test sites and installed immediately above the shaft bottom during sinking at the 2,414, 4,063, 5,191, and 5,955 levels. Limited access to the instruments prompted the development of a microcomputer-based remote data acquisition system that could be operated from the surface. The system scanned the instruments on a programmed schedule, printed out reduced data, and stored the data for plotting and recall. Data acquisition from off-site and uploading of data to mainframe computers were accomplished by the addition of modems to the basic system. The system is suitable for use in monitoring the structural behavior of any deep mine opening, especially in harsh operating environments and where access is limited.
