The U.S. Bureau of Mines has attempted to use ultrasonic signal travel-time measurements to measure loaded roof bolt strains. The strain measurements are then related to roof bolt loads through equations or empirical calibrations. Such techniques offer the potential of accurate, rapid bolt load measurement that does not disturb the anchotage. This report presents 6e research findings for a specific type of ultrasonic measurement instrument using a pulsed-phase-Iock-Ioop technique. This technique measures signal travel time indirectly by measuring frequency changes. A complete development of the applicable theory and detailed derivations of key equations is presented along with empirical laboratory and field results. The differences between anticipated and measured behaviors are analyzed and discussed. The report identifies problems encountered in applying pulsed-phase-Iock-Ioop technology to roof bolt load measurement and provides potential solutions to many of them. A key assumption of pulsed-phase-lock-loop theory is that driving and reflected signal frequencies will always be equal. Findings showed that not only were actual frequencies not equal but they were not stable or simply related. Reflection wave shape also was not stable. The ramification of these findings and ways to minimize their adverse effects are presented.

This paper summarizes explosives transportation incident and accident data collected by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) from 1993 to 1998. The paper briefly describes the legislation and regulations that cover hazardous materials transportation. The multimodal incident data collected by the Research and Special Programs Administration (RSPA) contained 86 incidents involving Class 1 materials during transit. Thirty-two occurred on public highways. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) data showed there were 8 1 motor-vehicle accidents involving explosives. The FHWA Crash datafile extract contained 649 records categorized as involving Class 1 materials although closer analysis revealed that nearly 90% of these did not involve explosives. In both databases, there were no fatalities caused by the explosive materials although 7 fatalities were the result of injuries suffered during the motorvehicle accident. There were also no serious explosions during any of these incidents or accidents. The paper concludes with an analysis of the risk involved with transportation of commercial Class 1 materials on the highway.

The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of leaching zinc from the tailing (-2 mm) of Angouran flotation plant using sulphuric acid. The tails were first calcined at 800¦C for one hour. The effect of factors such as stirring rate, temperature, initial acid concentration and solid/liquid ratio, on zinc extraction were studied. The results obtained show that at the best conditions, about 91 per cent of zinc were leached using a stirring rate of 800 rpm, a reaction temperature of 50¦C, a 30 minute reaction time, a 100 g/L initial sulphuric acid concentration and solid:liquid ratio 1:6 g/ml. The P85 of the feed material was about 150 ¦m and acid consumption was 600 kg/t.

"Despite the pre-eminence of the Jwaneng Diamond Mine as the world’s richest diamond mine, the discovery story has long been clouded in mystery. This is the 45-year old untold story of the Jwaneng discovery and contemporaneous Bechuanaland/Botswana political and socioeconomic history. Diamond exploration by De Beers in Bechuanaland began in 1955, with the first true kimberlite discovery near Letlhakane in 1967, before Clifford’s Rule was applied and before the use of indicator mineral chemistry. Surface deflation soil sampling and bioturbation by termites was the foundation for exploration into the Kalahari. The 1962 reconnaissance programme south of Jwaneng had failed to make any discoveries. Improved sampling methods were applied to the Kalaharicovered areas in 1969 and positive results were received by year-end. The Whateley’s Wish percussion drill-hole in December 1972 was confirmed as Jwaneng 2424D/K2 with drill core in early 1973. Jumper drills were required to penetrate the Kalahari sand cover. Diamond resources were demonstrated despite multiple technical problems. IntroductionThe Jwaneng Diamond Mine is, by value, the world’s richest diamond mine. Harry Oppenheimer is quoted as saying that Jwaneng is ‘the most important primary deposit found anywhere in the world since the discovery at Kimberley more than a century ago.’ (Taylor III, 1982) The mine opened in 1982 after some nine years of evaluation and construction since discovery in February 1973. Debswana (2017) states that 2015 production was 7.87 Mt of ore from which 10.408 million carats were recovered at a grade of 132 carats per 100 t (cpht). Although the value is not reported, it was noted that Jwaneng contributes 60–70% of Debswana’s total revenue from all mines, including Orapa, Damtshaa, and Letlhakane (Debswana, 2017)."

Representatives of a number of the leading engineering organizations in the vicinity of St. Louis were present by invitation. They were given a delightful ride about the city and were entertained at the Glen Echo Country Club at dinner. The special committee that had been appointed to draft resolutions to Mr. Hoover submitted the following, which were adopted : WHEREAS, our President, Herbert Hoover, has been appointed Secretary of Commerce in the Cabinet of the President of the United States, and WHEREAS, in consequence of his acceptance of this high public office, he has deemed it necessary to tender his resignation as President of The Federated American Engineering Societies.

At the Fort Knox Mine, Fairbanks, Alaska, carbon fines are generated during stripping, acid washing and kiln regeneration operations. Carbon fines are collected by a filter press because of their gold value. Samples of the carbon fines show that they consist of 20-30% carbon, 70-80% grit and 0.17-0.68 kg/t (5.0-19.9 oz/st) gold. About 80% of the gold values in the carbon fines used in this study are in a form of recrystallized free gold grains, with the balance being adsorbed gold on the carbon. High recoveries of gold and carbon were obtained in laboratory tests using froth flotation, with a high rejection of the grit.

WMC has mined the Perseverance disseminated orebody exclusively by SLC (sublevel cave) methods. Deteriorating ground conditions in the vicinity of an orebody inflection forced a re-evaluation of future mining at Perseverance and a strategy to drop down below the inflection zone and recommence the cave was implemented. This strategy has led to increased production at higher grades, resulting in lower costs and better mill recoveries. This paper describes the evolution of mine planning, development, support and production strategies through the successful process of implementing the ædrop-downÆ and re-establishing the SLC.

A number of challenges face platinum concentrator plant operators. These challenges include the increase in operating costs, the increase in smelter cost for the processing of concentrate, the shortage and cost of power, and the tightening of specifications on concentrate quality by the toll-smelting operations. Over the years the focus has moved from extracting the platinum group metals (PGM) from the Merensky Reef to the UG2 reef. This has a number of advantages, including the higher ?basket price? for UG2 concentrate, reduced mining cost per unit volume as a result of the higher density of UG2, and the reduction in overall concentrate tonnage to be smelted. In many cases the Merensky ore has been fully exploited and it makes sense for the focus to shift to the UG2 ore that can be accessed through the Merensky shaft infrastructure. The presence of relatively high levels of chromite in UG2 concentrate is, however, a major disadvantage due to the problems associated with smelting such a concentrate in conventional submerged arc furnaces. In addition to increasing the specification on the minimum PGM grade of concentrates, smelters have had to impose strict specifications on the levels of chromite in the concentrate. The threat of high penalties has forced concentrators to change their modus operandi, often resulting in a significant loss in recovery. The final concentrate grades and PGM recoveries are shown to vary significantly throughout the industry. The reasons for this include varying ore mineralogy and different operating philosophies. This would therefore imply that the opportunity exists to optimize the operations by considering fundamental aspects such as the PGM mineralogy and the application of appropriate technologies. By returning to the fundamentals of flotation and applying the findings of detailed process reviews, it has been possible to increase the concentrate PGM grade, reduce the concentrate chromite grade, and in some cases increase the recovery of PGM to concentrate. This paper presents case studies where this approach has been used to successfully optimize concentrator performance, resulting in lower operating cost and higher PGM production. "The most common comminution testing methods and the associated analytical procedures provide average values and do not capture the variability in breakage behaviour of ore particles. Therefore, plant designs and process performance predictions use only average values; hence, the inherent variability that exists within an ore domain translates into variation in process performance. This paper discusses the drawbacks of using the average approach to impact comminution testing and plant design. It considers breakage intensity from a single-particle testing perspective. To clearly delineate breakage behaviour of each broken particle, an experimental technique using the JK Drop Weight Tester (JKDWT) has been developed by which actual comminution energy per particle and breakage intensities were measured directly. Four different ore types in ranges of -45+37.5mm and -22.4+19mm were tested at three energy levels of 0.1, 0.25, 0.5 kWh/t and six energy levels of 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0 and 4.0 kWh/t, respectively. Sieved results of individual particles, notionally, t5, t10 and t50 showed the presence of large variability in their breakage behaviour, which was not captured by the standard JK impact breakage testing approach. In addition, the original JKMRC model is modified by introducing a third parameter, ‘Emint10’ which describes the minimum energy required to produce the minimum percent t10 for a given ore type and its significance is tested statistically. These results suggest that the analysis of breakage variability may lead to more robust plant designs. Perhaps, the most useful insight from this work is to extend single particle breakage model developed by JKMRC to a comminution percentile envelope which may provide a more detailed picture of ore breakage variability. INTRODUCTION Rock consists of mineral grains, pores, voids and cracks that may differ markedly in size/density which make rock a heterogeneous material by nature. The degree of heterogeneity in rock affects its breakage characteristics where these variations increase local differential strain and stress within a stressed rock (Scholz, 1968) and it depends on many factors such as rock genesis, alterations, etc. One important aspect of this heterogeneous feature is presence of a large amount of experimental scatter in rock breakage results when considered from a quantitative perspective (Bieniawski, 1967; Liu, Roquete, Kou, & Lindqvist, 2004)."

Current practice in mining frozen, underground placers is to support the mine openings by leaving remnant pillars, which are kept frozen to maintain their stability. These pillars may be partially extracted depending on mining conditions, but this practice may be risky, and roof falls are common. Instead of allowing the mined-out areas to cave, the extracted entries could be filled with waste material, which would then be frozen, using cold ventilation air. A finite difference model for analyzing the effects of various parameters on the freezing of backfill in underground mines in the Arctic has been developed and tested. The model also accounts for properties unique to a frozen rock mass, including those that change with temperature. Examination of the characteristics of ice-cemented mining waste materials as backfill indicates that with proper engineering control, a backfill system can be designed for use in production mines. The system will allow increased extraction ratio while maintaining the stability of underground openings with minimum heat impact on the surroundings. These simulated results establish the relationships among the strength, the temperature, and the freezing characteristics of a given material. When coupled with site observations these relationships will facilitate the optimal design of ore pillar recovery methods.

The target in grinding circuit operation is usually to maximise the throughput and energy efficiency while keeping the product particle size on an optimal level for downstream operations. Furthermore, feed ore variations in size and hardness need to be compensated in order to stabilise the process. This is a challenging task for any circuit and requires good instrumentation, combined with careful control design. This study investigates the control of a two-stage iron ore grinding circuit with an AG and pebble mill at LKAB Kiruna KA3 concentrator in northern Sweden. A new control approach based on multivariable model predictive control (MPC) is designed, implemented and evaluated for the circuit. Additionally, advanced instrumentation including a volumetric charge measurement for grinding mills is utilised. The MPC control approach starts with step tests that are used to model the effect of manipulated variables (MVs) like feed rate, water addition and primary mill speed on controlled variables (CVs) such as final product particle size, power consumption and volumetric charge of the mills. In the control implementation phase, the models are then utilissed together with current process measurements and known operating limits to predict optimal future changes for the manipulated variables in order to reach the desired process output values. In September, 1953, seismographs were installed in the Crowsnest Pass area of Alberta and British Columbia to study the 'bumps' which were occurring in the coal mines at Fernie and Coleman, and to investigate the possibility that they might be related to minor earthquakes in the area. During the initial phase of the work, three seismographs were operated at widely separated stations, two in the region of coal mines at Coal Creek and Coleman and one at Turner Valley, distant from any mining operations. Some earthquakes were recorded at all three stations and, in addition, many small disturbances were recorded by the seismographs located near the mines, especially -by the instrument at Goal Greek. A closer network of radio-linked seismographs was then in-stalled near Fernie, the records of which definitely established that the small disturbances were occurring in the mine workings, both active and inactive. No relationship was established between bumps and local earth-quakes in the area. This work was initiated as a -co-operative effort with the Fuels Di-vision of the Mines Branch, Department of Mines and Technical Surveys, which has undertaken a study into the phenomena of ground stress relief in underground mine workings.

A circuit is considered intrinsically safe when any spark or thermal effect produced normally (that is, by operating the equipment in its correct operational manner to fulfill its purpose) or accidentally (caused by short circuit, earth fault, defective components, breaking the wiring, etc.) is incapable under prescribed test conditions of causing ignition of a prescribed gas mixture. The test conditions and gas mixture should be at least as hazardous as the true parameters of the environment where the circuit will be operated. According to present practices, the question of whether or not a circuit is intrinsically safe is decided upon experimentally. The circuit is inspected first for mechanical soundness and a survey is made to determine what faults should be considered as probable. Then the individual branches are connected, in sequence, to a test apparatus called 'breakflash" which acts as an opening, closing contact and thus draws sparks from the circuit. This test is repeated a given number of times in the presence of the prescribed gas mixture under specified conditions (electrode configurations, gas parameters, etc.). The equipment will be regarded as intrinsically safe if during testing no ignition has occurred.

WHEN I was asked to prepare, for presentation at the 1938 Annual Meeting of the Institute, some data concerning low-discharge grinding at the Sylvanite mill, it seemed entirely reasonable to expect to have at my disposal the results of at least four full months' operation after the last unit, as then proposed, was installed. Delays in delivery of equipment, nevertheless, shortened the interval, as will be shown herein. In submitting the data contained in this discussion, I wish distinctly to state that the intention is not to claim that final conclusions can be reached at this time concerning our operation. Test periods, in certain instances at least, have been too short for this purpose, although some, where so stated, have been extended through March and April. It is hoped, however, that an advantageous trend in practice can be shown and that the experience related may be of interest to others who are now operating, or who are considering the operation of, low-discharge grinding mills. In the plant under review, four mills are in use: one primary and three secondary. Present mill capacity (grinding, as shown by screen test, about 99 per cent through-200-mesh and approximately 88 to 89 per cent minus-325-mesh with infrasizer giving about 90 per cent of the latter) averages about 525 tons per day. A brief description of each unit will be given and comments will also be made relating to operation. This will be followed by certain test data from which, in conclusion, operating results are summarized.

The Buffelsfontein Gold Mining Company is situated in the Klerks-dorp district of the Province of the Transvaal in the Republic of South Africa, approximately 100 miles west of Johannesburg. Gold production commenced in January 1957 and Uranium treatment of residue slimes as a by-product started in July 1957. The mining property is 5435 mining claims in extent, the equivalent of 7,988 acres or 12.5 square miles. The mine was initially exploited by the Pioneer Twin Shaft System, consisting of a 26 feet diameter down-cast shaft and a 22 feet diameter up-cast shaft, sunk in the north-west area of the mine to cater for the hoisting and ventilation requirements for a milling rate of 150,000 tons per month.

The rare earth elements (REEs) are a group of 17 chemical (metallic) elements. REEs are used widely in high-technology, clean-energy products as well as weapon systems. China's dominant position as a producer of over 95% of the world REEs output and the world's increasing reliance on REE products have highlighted concerns about the future availability of rare earths in recent years. This paper briefly reviews the REEs world reserves, production, consumption, the impact of our heavy reliance on REEs products and China's changing policies on REE export on world supply chain.

Several thousand parts per billion of uranium are present in some alkaline lake and ground waters of the Okanagan region, British Columbia. To a major extent the uranium content of these highly anomalous waters is controlled by their levels of dissolved bicarbonate. In lakes, dissolved bicarbonate and the organic content of the sediment largely control the partitioning of uranium between sediment and water. This relationship is found to a lesser extent in alkaline creeks, and transported geochemical anomalies in soils appear where uranium-bearing alkaline ground waters have encountered organic materials. There is a possibility that young, near-surface deposits (with very low radioactivity) are forming from these uraniferous waters.

In 1965 Africa maintained its position as a region of the world essential to advanced non-Communist nations for supply of vital metals and minerals. The position stemmed from the fact that Africa produced in large quantity a number of key minerals of which either or both resources and production capacity elsewhere did not approach the needs of the free world. The Republic of South Africa alone contributed more than three quarters of the gold mined in the entire non-Communist world besides an estimated 60 percent of metals of the platinum group and the entire new supply of amosite asbestos, and Africa as a whole was nearly the non-Communist world's only source of gem and industrial diamond. Africa also accounted for 83 percent of non-Communist world cobalt production. Besides these massive contributions, Africa in 1965 provided 50 percent or more of the new supply from non-Communist countries of the following mineral commodities: Lithium minerals, corundum, manganese ore: and chromite, and over 20 percent of new supply from non-Communist countries of columbium-tantalum concentrates, antimony, beryl, vanadium, phosphate rock, and copper. Africa also accounted for 18 percent of the non-Communist world's output of uranium, 14 percent of its tin, 11 percent of its lead, 9 percent of its zinc, and 8.9 percent of its crude oil output. With respect to chromite, at yearend Africa's reserves of the mineral were far larger than those of all other non-Communist regions combined. This probably also held true for manganese ore. In the case of crude oil, the fact that Africa's share of non-Communist world output was 1.6 percentage points greater than in 1964 was significant, particularly inasmuch as the output rate was continuing to increase at yearend.
