The current Stoilensky magnetite concentrator comprises a three-stage crushing circuit followed by three stages of ball milling, grinding and concentration to produce a magnetite concentrate with 66.5% iron (Fe). The plant is built in four lines, three lines having four mills and one line with five mills, to treat 32 Mt/y of ore and produce 13.9 Mt/y of concentrate.NLMK, the owner, is Russia’s third largest steel maker and while the ore from the Stoilensky Mining and Beneficiation Plant (SGOK) provides the bulk of their supply, they still must buy ore from external sources at world prices. A decision was taken to expand the SGOK operation to supply all the NLMK concentrate, including the production of pellets.To commence the expansion, high pressure grinding rolls (HPGRs) were introduced as a fourth stage of crushing ahead of the first ball mill. This was a relatively low capital cost expansion and increased production by 12 to 15%, the cost being much less than an additional grinding line. The importance of this development was that earlier introductions of HPGRs in Russia had presented several problems so there was some reluctance to the initial concept. The even greater significance was that nearly every magnetite plant in Russia had a three-stage crushing circuit so the successful introduction of HPGRs was of interest to many operators.The design was developed by a team, consisting of Worley Parson, Mineralconsult and PiterGORproject (PGP), for the first four units to fit inside existing building structures. The first two units were commissioned in March 2016 and the next two units in May 2016, and production improved by over 12%. A reciclagem de materiais provenientes de combustíveis fósseis é essencial para a redução do impacto desses materiais no meio ambiente. Utilizar materiais reciclados exige, não somente a reutilização direta do produto, mas a criação de processamento e técnica desses materiais no intuito de produzir materiais melhorados após o tempo de uso, justificando o desenvolvimento de tecnologias nesse âmbito. Esse trabalho de conclusão de curso foi executado no intuito de auxiliar nas técnicas utilizadas por uma empresa de reciclagem de polietileno para a produção de pellets reciclados. Foram avaliadas as propriedades mecânicas e espectroscópicas de cada uma das fases e os processos realizados para a produção do material final: uma blenda polimérica constituída de diferentes tipos de polietileno reciclado. As técnicas de caracterização utilizadas foram Ensaios de Tração para a avaliação da tensão máxima e módulo de elasticidade dos materiais, Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV) para avaliar dimensionalmente a região de fratura dos polímeros, Infravermelho com Transformada de Fourier (FTIR) para identificar os grupos funcionais presentes nos polímeros analisados, TG/DTG para o estudo das propriedades térmicas das fases separadamente e da blenda e determinação do grau de cristalinidade por meio da densidade. Foi possível não só identificar as funções orgânicas do polietileno na técnica de espectroscopia de infravermelho, mas também analisar um pico desconhecido em um dos polietilenos envolvido na mistura da blenda, que pode se relacionar com o seu resultado obtido no ensaio de TG/DTG, o qual aponta uma maior porcentagem de resíduo após a degradação total da massa do mesmo.

Rapid changes in technology and human resources trends require the mining industry to plan carefully for new work camps. The abandonment of the “mining town” concept and rapid increases in the adoption of long distance commuting have intensified the need for improved planning and monitoring of existing and upcoming operations. New mines will have an increasing Aboriginal participation in their workforce and will mostly to be located in remote and in extreme weather conditions. In this sense, the intensification of the use of the commuting system has increased the need for improved planning and monitoring of upcoming operations. Given that mining development is experiencing a surge in activity in Canada, particularly in remote and northern locations significant number of individuals will get jobs that involve mine camp communities. Some employees will spend half of their working lives at the mine site for a period of time that can last up to 30 years. Even though investments have been made towards particularly high quality physical environments, mine camp policies, programs and employee quality of life in mine camps have not been studied in any depth.

A oxidação da superfície de peças, ferramentas, moldes ou matrizes construídas em ligas ferrosas tem larga utilização na indústria. As aplicações podem ser as mais diversas, tais como simplesmente atender às questões estéticas, proteção da superfície contra a corrosão, ou proteção contra a interação química com outros metais. Dentre as técnicas industriais utilizadas há o processo conhecido como “Oxidação Negra” que é realizado em baixas temperaturas, com imersão do aço da peça em óleo quente, ou banho de sal especial, ou mesmo a frio (soluções especiais). Outros processos utilizam fornos industriais com atmosfera de ar para aquecer a liga ferrosa até temperaturas da ordem de 500ºC e acrescentar (“pingar”) água como fonte de oxigênio. E em outros, aplicação ceras hidrocarbonetadas e ácidos inorgânicos e posterior oxidação [1] com aquecimento a temperaturas da ordem de 500ºC. Nesses processos, o objetivo é formar uma camada de óxidos tipos Magnetita e Hematita cujas características de menor coeficiente de atrito e determinadas propriedades físicas e químicas serviriam de barreira à interação química com outros metais em contato. A camada de óxido obtida nas condições descritas acima é bastante útil para determinadas aplicações industriais, tais como moldes de injeção de alumínio. Esse texto descreve o processo de oxidação desenvolvido utilizando a tecnologia de plasma.

"Blasting and rock fragmentation is one the most important unit operations in mining. Since itsintroduction into the mine production cycle, mining has become more efficient in mineral production(Hartman, 2002). Widely used with the main objective of breaking rock mass in smaller fragments to be loaded and hauled at a minimum cost, blasting is optimized when stemming materials properly confine drillholes charged with explosives. Halim Cevizci (2013) performed a stemming application using Gypsum plaster, a kind of material that exhibits solid-like behavior when it is dry. Based on his theory, the present article reports an experiment using another type of material that shows similar behavior, non-Newtonian fluids. The primary goal of this study is to measure the confinement effectiveness provided by a non-Newtonian mixture as the stemming component. The study also analyzes the explosives’ energy propagation throughout the rock mass relating to the stemming materials applied. Currently, mining literature recommends the application of dry granular materials in stemming columns, because of its inertial and high frictional effects (Hagan, 1973). However, the test verified that the mixture added to the stemming column was able to reduce energy and gas losses to the atmosphere, because of the liquid’s property of filling voids in the material. The solid-like behavior of the non-Newtonian mixture was investigated for its capability to improve borehole confinement, since the mixture reacts like a solid when under shear stress. The results were compared to those from sand and air stemming applications, configured in different arrangements. It was concluded that the non-Newtonian mixture yielded high results due to its better confinement effectiveness, a reduction of air overpressure, and an increase of the strain propagation and ground vibration throughout the rock."

To provide cooler air to miners working in hot areas of mines, particularly new deep hardrock mines. Approach Air supplied to hot working areas of mines is cooled by passing it through a series of water sprays. How It Works Water nozzles mounted inside a section of ventilation tubing release cooling sprays of water into the air being blown through the tube. The prototype of the water spray cooler consists of six evenly spaced water sprays located inside a 10-ft. long section of 16-inch-diameter fiberglass ventilation tubing. See diagram. This section of rigid tubing is installed into one of the positive pressure ventilation tubing lines that conduct fresh air into working stopes. The intake manifold to the six water sprays is connected to the mine?s cool water line, and the water valve on the manifold is opened. Warm ventilation air being supplied to the stope passes through the water sprays, and is cooled by the lower temperature water.

Almost a quarter of a century since Bridges (1993) documented techniques for the assessment of ground conditions in a seminal paper in the Proceedings Second International Mining Geology Conference, the necessary role of the geologist in recording geotechnical data on exploration properties and in mines remains. Typically, the geologist is the first professional on the exploration property. Of course, most exploration properties don’t become mines. However, when a property does start to come together and form a coherent mineral deposit and professionals from across the minerals industry spectrum, including specialist geotechnical engineers, become increasingly involved, it remains the geologist who has the most intimate knowledge of the deposit. By association, that knowledge extends to the character of the rock mass.Throughout the various phases of prefeasibility, feasibility, construction and production, culminating in the mature mine, the knowledge of the rock mass held by the geologists continues to grow. In the current era of minimising cost and optimising profit, meeting the requirements and expectations of stakeholders ranging from fellow employees to investors, industry and financial regulators and the broader public, in a social environment where occupational health and safety concerns are of uppermost concern in every endeavour, the value of the geologists’ observations cannot be understated. Mines nowadays employ more geotechnical engineers than they did in the early 1990s when Bridges (1993) wrote his paper. More funds are available for specific geotechnical investigations of exploration properties and mines; none-the-less, those programs remain limited in their extent and there is a wealth of additional data available for collection with the appropriate training, at little additional effort. Fundamentally it is all about the numbers. Any hole not geotechnically logged is a hole that will need to be drilled again if the data is required. Any face, surface or underground, not geotechnically mapped is one that may need to be mapped a second time. That doesn’t mean every hole or every face. However, it is the proposition of this paper that the opportunity for additional geotechnical data to be gathered during traditional geological investigations is an opportunity that cannot be ignored. Occupational health and safety requirements demand that the geotechnical risks associated with mining are appropriately managed. Mining regulations in most Australian and overseas jurisdictions requires the consideration of geotechnical risk through formalised management plans. The Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) Code requires the consideration of modifying factors more than ever before. The benefit to be realised through improved geotechnical understanding by geologists on the ground leads to improved occupational health and safety, optimised reporting compliance, and improved financial and social outcomes for the exploration property and ultimately for the mine that follows.CITATION:Hills, P B, 2017. Em sistemas cerâmicos policristalinos as homojunções e heterojunções podem apresentar comportamento elétrico desde completamente ôhmico até com elevada característica retificadora, que no limite é a base do comportamento varistor, o qual é o dispositivo de proteção de sistemas e equipamentos eletro-eletrônicos contra sobretensões mais utilizado. Os óxidos de zinco (ZnO) e de estanho (SnO2) são, individualmente, base dos varistores com melhores comportamentos elétricos. Este trabalho, com base nas caracterizações estruturais por técnicas de microscopia eletrônica de varredura e análises termodilatométricas, e na caracterização elétrica e dielétrica, avalia as propriedades varistoras de cerâmicas à base do sistema misto ZnO-SnO2. Verifica-se a formação de um sistema polifásico apresentando homojunções e heterojunções com diferentes características morfológicas e graus de densificação, exibindo ainda comportamento eletrotérmico com predomínio de características varistoras em função da dopagem da matriz mista ZnO-SnO2. Os resultados obtidos evidenciam a tendência da formação de espinélio (Zn2SnO4) em presença de grãos de SnO2 e do estabelecimento de comportamento varistor (coeficiente de não-linearidade > 10), que pode ser aperfeiçoado por dopagem adicional e por tratamentos térmicos, principalmente quanto à redução da corrente de fuga e da ampliação e estabilização da região não-linear da curva tensão x corrente elétrica.

3900 Yonge St. was not a typical site on which to build a condominium apartment. A steep hill covered the majority of the site. In order to use as much of this site as possible, the rear of the building was to have nine stores cut into the face of the hill. A permanent shoring system was required as the building structure was not designed to provide sufficient stabilizing elements to support the total earth pressure. The total excavation depth required was 36 m (120'-0") with the upper 12 m (40'-0") to be backsloped. The vertical face of soil to be supported was 24 m (80'-0'). The shoring system originally designed by the Structural Engineer was to support this face by installing soldier piles and inclined earth anchors. During bid preparation it became evident to us that the system as designed would be difficult and expensive to install due to wet soil conditions. An innovative design was required to overcome these problems. Anchor Shoring hired John Stephenson Consultants Ltd. to aid them in accomplishing this goal. After extensive investigation together with The Trow Group, a unique design was proposed which provided a practical solution to the shoring problem.

The Getchell Mine, near Winnemucca, NR, was discovered in the 1930s and was initially mined to recover gold from oxide ores. During the 1940s and 1950s, gold was recovered from the highly refractory arsenic sulfide ores using horizontal kilns to roast the ores. During the 1960s, fluid bed roasters were used to oxidize the ore and recover the gold. The mine was shut down from 1968 through 1985. In 1985, heap leaching was started on the low-grade oxide ores that were available. In 1989, a pressure oxidation circuit was started to recover gold from the higher grade sulfide ores. Flowsheet The basic plant flowsheet of the Getchell Mine are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The plant was designed to process a nominal 2.7 kt/d (3000 stpd) of ore with about an 85% onstream availability and a gold production of 15.5 kg/d (500 oz/ day). Run-of-mine (ROM) ore is fed directly to a wet semiautogenuous grinding (SAG) mill after the +457-µm (+18in.) rock is removed on a stationary grizzly. From the SAG mill, the ore goes to a ball mill where it is ground to 80% -75 µm (-200 mesh) and is then sent to a thickener. The SAG and ball mill operate in closed circuit using cyclones.

In the green backfilling mining of underground coal mines, gangue in a coal seam is used to replace and fill goafs. However, the gas drainage time changes in the amount of gangue output and order in the extraction sequence of stope blocks, thereby changing the production output. A multi-objective integer programming model was proposed to solve this based on an improved non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm. The results show a feasible gangue filling rate can be found and the extraction sequence for a long-term planning time is optimized. It increases the planned annual output by 26% and reduces equipment idle time.

Nos últimos anos, especialmente fibras naturais extraídas de plantas lignocelulósico, ganharam atenção devido ao seu desempenho como engenharia de reforço. Uma de suas aplicações mais importantes é como reforço de compósitos poliméricos na substituição de fibras sintéticas, que não são ambientalmente corretas. Todavia, as fibras ligoncelulósicas com Malva, Juta dentre outras possuem algumas características negativas para sua incorporação em matrizes poliméricas, como por exemplo, o fato dessas não possuírem boa aderência aos polímeros, pelo seu caráter hidrofílico e do caráter hidrofóbico das resinas. Esse trabalho estudou a incorporação de manta hibrida de fibras de malva e juta em compósitos epoxy DGEBA/TETA para testes de impacto Izod. Os corpos de prova foram feitos sob pressão para que houvesse uma melhora na aderência. O aumento do volume da manta incorporado gerou um aumento da resistência apresentado que pode ser justificado pelo fato da manta atuar como um bloqueador de trincas.

The design, specification, and performance evaluation of the Communications and Location portions of a Coal Mine Rescue and Survival System are described. The work was performed as part of a nine month effort to develop a mine rescue and survival system using existing technology and state -of-the -art hardware as recommended by the National Academy of Engineering. Three basic subsystems were developed, one for survival, one for communications/location and one for rescue. This report and related equipment manuals describe only the Communications/ Location Subsystem which was designed, fabricated, and tested by the Westinghouse Georesearch Laboratory in Boulder, Colorado. Two basic technologies were used. Electromagnetic signals propagating through-the-earth provide voice downlink and coded beacon up-link communications. Seismic methods were developed to provide means for locating trapped miners. Seismic signalling also provides a backup means for communications. Parallel development programs for the electromagnetic and seismic portions of the system were conducted. The resulting hardware and software have been partially tested in coal mines and under simulated emergency conditions in order to evaluate system performance. The results of these tests are discussed. Further testing is recommended in order to establish quantitative performance limitations tinder a variety of environmental conditions and to develop methods for improving system performance.

"The selection of equipment for open-pit mining is an important decision which results in a considerable capital expenditure by the operator. The decision is complicated by the wide product range on the market. Certainly, equipment performance is an important criterion to consider in making the decision. Equally important, however, is the operating inter-relationship among the equipment. A poor balance increases production costs and waiting time as queues form at the bottlenecks. This inter-relationship is dependent on equipment performance, but it is also affected by management decisions (i.e. scheduling techniques).The purpose of this paper is to show how the computer is used to decide which equipment and operating decisions achieve the required production objectives at least cost. Actual mining of the pit is simulated over a period of time using different equipment and scheduling decisions. Production, waiting time and costs are evaluated for each alternative until the operator is satisfied that he has achieved the best result."

This report presents the development of a raw coal concentration sensor for hydro-transport of coal and refuse (rock) from underground mines, and the results of an international test series carried out at the Colorado School of Mines Research Institute in Golden, Colorado, the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Hydraulic Transport Research Facility in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Saskatchewan Research Facility in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, and the Steinkohlenbergbauverein Test Facility in Essen, West Germany. Test results are presented for a three-component sensor and also for the more rugged two-component (all nuclear) sensor.

"The mining industry is the source for the vast majority of the metal, mineral and energy resources we use on a daily basis. New deposits are discovered over time and are developed into mines before being rehabilitated – a sequence that when repeated can help contribute to the noble notion of ‘sustainable development’, despite the generic concept of mining being the unsustainable consumption of non-renewable resources. The scale of the modern mining industry is immense – from iron ore and coal to base and precious metals, modern mines are sometimes hundreds or thousands of times bigger than their long lost historic ancestors. We also live in a world with emerging and increasing demands for so-called technology metals (aka ‘critical’, ‘e-tech’ or ‘specialty’ metals) that are needed to feed the rapid growth in renewable energy (especially solar photovoltaic panels and wind turbines), consumer electronics, sophisticated military technologies and super alloys, amongst other uses. These elements include the rare earth elements, indium, germanium, tellurium, rhenium, selenium, gallium and many others, most of which had few or no known uses in the recent past. Although the mining industry has been successful in developing ever larger mines and increasing the scale of production, the key issues underlying the future of the industry are declining ore grades, increased tailings and waste rock generation, the presence of toxic or other impurities, balancing the economics of primary and secondary products, stricter environmental conditions, more difficult exploration, increasing community expectations, as well as the processing of more complex or refractory ores, let alone the recent volatility in world commodity markets. Here, we synthesise our recent research on many of these various issues, focusing on the need to link all areas within the mining chain from mineral resources through mining to environmental performance in order to ensure we obtain the most out of our modern mining effort. The paper presents a unique and detailed assessment of the sustainability challenges and opportunities facing modern mining – and geometallurgical thinking is at the heart of this conundrum.CITATION:Mudd, G M, Jowitt, S M, 2016. AGL is one of Australia’s leading integrated energy companies and the largest ASX listed owner, operator and developer of renewable energy and thermal generation in the country. AGL owns and operates the 2210 MW Loy Yang A power station and adjacent 30 Mt/a brown coalmine in the Latrobe Valley, Victoria. It also supplies coal to the nearby 1050 MW Loy Yang B power station owned by the GDF Suez (Engie)/Mitsui partnership. The mine is currently nearly 5 km long, more than 2 km wide at the operating face and up to 200 m deep. AGL employs a large workforce at Loy Yang and a substantial amount of services are performed on-site by contractors and consultants.GHD provides mine planning, earth sciences, civil/geotechnical engineering, dam surveillance, plant engineering and environmental services to AGL Loy Yang through an alliance framework. GHD is one of the world’s leading professional services companies operating in the global markets of water; energy and resources; environment; property and buildings; and transportation. In addition to GHD’s global footprint, the company also has a significant Victorian presence, including a permanent, well-resourced regional office in Traralgon, approximately 10 km from Loy Yang, as well as a permanent site office.A joint paper on the Loy Yang mine professional services alliance model was written for the AusIMM International Mine Management Conference in 2006 by Woods and Wood. Now ten years on, this paper provides an overview of the present relationship and arrangements, including the continued transformation of the alliance model and maturing of the relationship contract.These are challenging times, with increasing cost and regulatory pressure driving change in the broader energy and resources industry, and locally including both the mining and power sectors at Loy Yang. Flexible models to achieve a balance between internal personnel and access to key external skills, whilst achieving value for money and transparency, is increasingly critical. The right drivers and performance measures are essential, particularly when confronted with potential major technical and environmental risks (considering significant ground failure and fire events that have occurred elsewhere within the Latrobe Valley over the last decade) within a sector that is reducing costs and optimising production.This case study discusses the alliance status and changes, reasons behind adjustments and what the future is likely to hold. The paper also explores the validity of the original objectives and the extent to which they have been achieved. The philosophy of the alliance is to continue closely aligning the objectives of the two companies in the best interests of the Loy Yang site and immediate surrounds/stakeholders. Flotation testing has been done at laboratory scale on hematite mineral and ore samples using stage additions of various hydroxamates. Chemisorption of hydroxamate species onto the hematite surface was inferred from the results, possibly involving both the undissociated hydroxamic acid and hydroxamate ion as maximum recovery occurred close to the pKa of the hydroxamic acid. Flotation testing on a specular hematite ore containing 40 per cent Fe and 42.5 per cent silica gave highest iron grades in concentrate at pH 6, in contrast to published data which suggested pH 9 as the optimum value for ore processing. Using octyl hydroxamate, a rougher concentrate assaying 67 per cent Fe at 51 per cent recovery was obtained using four stage additions of 50 g/t at pH 6. For lower grade concentrates still meeting the chemical analysis for pigment grade micaceous hematite (minimum Fe assay 60 per cent) iron recoveries of 80 per cent were possible for stage additions of 50 g/t octyl hydroxamate in the pH range 6-8.

Este trabalho apresenta os principais conceitos de Indústria 4.0 e discute os benefícios do emprego de alguns de seus mecanismos na construção de um sistema integrado de gestão de energia, em especial a utilização das tecnologias de big data (ou megadados, em português). A tese defendida neste trabalho – a possibilidade de se produzir grande valor a partir da abundância de dados de medição de consumo, de produção e de estados dos equipamentos, tipicamente encontrada em ambientes industriais – é demonstrada através do caso concreto da empresa Aperam South America, em sua planta de Timóteo, MG. Os resultados apresentados neste trabalho ilustram, qualitativamente, os potenciais retornos apurados no desenvolvimento de um sistema com as características descritas.
