[The shrinkage of coke after formation is one of the variables that affects the net expansion of the change in both industrial and test ovens. Various test results have been interpreted as indicating that cokes from certain coals shrink to a marked extent and that other cokes show very little shrinkage; out no comprehensive experimental study of the shrinkage of coke after its formation and of the factors influencing this shrinkage has come to the attention of the authors. While investigating the reactivity of cokes made by the BM-AGA method,6/ Reynolds7/ found that granular low-temperature cokes shrink considerably then reheated to higher temperatures. This shrinkage was large enough to influence the behavior of the charge (net expansion or contraction) in a coke oven to a marked extent. Since that time the Bureau of nines has investigated the shrinkage of coke different methods, all of thick had one common objective - the elimination of the effect of other factors, such as swelling in the plastic range, which could either partly or completely mask the shrinkage of the coke. Permeation rates for nitrogen through are-cast tungsten were measured in the temperature range 1800° to 2600°C at nitrogen pressure differentials of 1.0 and 0.1 atm. Gas chromatography was used to measure the quantities of nitrogen which permeated through 0.26-and 0.53-mm-thick membranes. Permeation rates were proportional to the difference between the square roots of the nitrogen pressure on each side of the membrane and inversely proportional to membrane thickness, indicating that atomic nitrogen was the difjusing species and that diffusion was the rate-limiting step of the process. Permeation coefficients calculated from the rates may be represented by the equation: where P is expressed in the units cu cm (stP)-mm per 1/2 sq cm-min-atm"' and 70.0 * 0.8 is the activation energy in kcal per mole of permeating species. In a previous paper' permeation rates were reported for hydrogen and for oxygen through tungsten. The permeation cells used for the hydrogen measurements were suitable for measuring nitrogen permeation under similar conditions, so the study was extended to include nitrogen. Permeation rates of nitrogen through the polycrys-talline arc-cast tungsten membranes were measured in the temperature range 1800" to 2600°C using two membrane thicknesses and two nitrogen pressure differentials. Permeation coefficients were calculated and the activation energy of the process determined. THEORY For diatomic gases which dissociate prior to diffusion, the quantity of gas which permeates through a membrane or wall at an elevated temperature where bulk diffusion is the rate-limiting step of the process is given by the equation: where: q = total amount of gas permeating a membrane, P = temperature-dependent permeation coefficient, A = area of membrane, t = time, p1 = gas pressure of high-pressure side, p2 = gas pressure of low-pressure side, and d = thickness of membrane. When bulk diffusion is the rate-controlling step, and the solubility of the gas obeys Henry's law, a further relationship is that, for any given temperature and pressure, the permeation is the product of diffusivity and the amount in solution. The permeation coefficient, P, is temperature-dependent according to the equation: where: Po = permeation constant, Q = activation energy, R = gas constant, and T = absolute temperature. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Cell Design and Experimental Apparatus. Two of the permeation cells used for the previous measurements of hydrogen permeation are shown in Fig. 1. Each consisted of a cylindrical chamber divided into two parts by a permeation membrane fabricated from high-purity (>99.9 pct W) wrought tungsten sheet made from vacuum arc-cast tungsten. The membrane in one cell was 0.26 mm thick and the other was 0.53 mm. The fabrication of these cells was described previously.' The permeation cells were mounted vertically in a high-temperature tungsten resistance furnace and the membranes and the center portions heated to test temperatures. Temperatures were measured by sighting an optical pyrometer on the edge of the membrane through a small hole in a tungsten plate which was fastened to the side of the cell. This arrangement provided an approximate black-body condition and eliminated the need for emittance corrections. Appropriate corrections were made for the quartz window through which the temperatures were measured. Argon gas flowed through the 10-liter volume of the furnace at the rate of 4.7 liters per min. O EOF é um forno básico a oxigênio caracterizado pelo conceito de pré-aquecimento da carga sólida baseado na energia da corrida anterior. Mesmo com um sistema supervisório, a operação era totalmente manual. O trabalho consistiu no desenvolvimento e implantação de modelos matemáticos, objetivando atingir a temperatura e composição química programada para vazamento. O sistema de equações consideram todas as entradas metálicas com as respectivas composições químicas e define a quantidade necessária de energético ou refrigerante, além da adição de cales conforme a basicidade e teor de MgO objetivados na escória. O desenvolvimento passou inicialmente por um conhecimento profundo do processo, dada a excelência e originalidade do forno EOF, que é diferente dos demais convertedores a oxigênio. A seguir, foram definidos padrões e práticas operacionais que garantissem a reprodutibilidade do processo, para, finalmente, permitir o cálculo através de modelos matemáticos. Com a automação do processo foram conseguidos expressivos ganhos de produtividade, redução no consumo de materiais, aumento do rendimento metálico e menor consumo de refratários.

After some 50 years of worldwide research in relation to coal pillar mechanics and design as well as numerous workshops and technical papers related to these issues there is still some significant disagreement as to the approach one should adopt in the assessment and design of a coal pillar. Of course there are many different types of coal pillars that fulfil a wide range of roles at any particular mine and in this instance it is appropriate to have a 'tailored' approach for each pillar type in relation to the role it fulfils. However where it can become very difficult for the mine operators is when various researchers or consultants use or recommend significantly different approaches for the same type of pillar fulfilling the same role. By 1999 two pillar design techniques had been developed specifically for the Australian underground coal mining industry (ie The University of New South Wales Pillar Design Procedure, UNSW PDP and Analysis of Longwall Tailgate Serviceability, ALTS) and several other pillar design techniques were being practiced by individual consultants. The Australian industry hoped to resolve the issue of what technique to use for each pillar type and role, when it funded UNSW in 2000 to develop a 'Systems Approach to Pillar Design'. The findings of the abovementioned project were published in 2005 and while every attempt was made by UNSW to include the views of various local and overseas researchers and consultants it would be fair to say that a unified approach to pillar design in Australia was not adopted as a result of that project. This is the experience of one country where there has never been one central group solely undertaking such research in relation to pillar design (such as the Chamber of Mines in South Africa). This paper explores the Australian experience in terms of pillar research and what that experience may offer to researchers in Australia and other countries. At the First Australasian Ground Control in Mining Conference (2003) the first 'update' of the ALTS Design Methodology (ie ALTS II) was presented. In subsequent years the ALTS database was continually updated and significantly expanded such that it now includes detailed information in relation to both the tailgate (148 cases) and maingate belt road (58 cases). In addition to tailgate roof support and chain pillar design, the current version of ALTS (referred to as ALTS 2009) includes a maingate belt road roof support design module. This paper is also intended to update and summarise the development and application of the ALTS Design Methodology for longwall gateroad design over the last decade both directly and in the context of coal pillar research conducted in Australia over the last 15 years.

The Anglo American phosphate mine is located in the Brazilian state of Goiás and possesses one of Brazil’s most important phosphate rock deposits, with the site being the country’s second largest producer of phosphate rock concentrate. Despite the site having been in operation since 1979, the mining team only started using explosives in 2004 when rocks with greater hardness started to appear in the mine’s geological profile. Rock excavation was previously performed mechanically. Until 2013, only rocks with high hardness were blasted, this following the standard drilling grid that was defined in 2004 without any changes in the blast parameters. The aim of this paper is to show how fragmentation optimisation has yielded positive results at all stages of the production chain, from the mine to the mill passing through an impact hammer crusher, a rod mill and ball mill, operating in close circuit with hydrocyclones.While incorporating the mine to mill holistic approach during the operational integration, the focus was on defining the blasting domains and respective optimal fragmentation and measuring the benefits of blasting in terms of reduction in energy and grinding media consumed in the comminution processes. In the first stage, the blasting team made changes to the blasting parameters and assessed the effects of these changes on fragmentation using computer software and on-site measurements. This generated a database that made it possible to divide the mine into blasting domains. For the second stage, teams from the plant, geology, mine planning and operation departments jointly made comparisons between the performance when processing stockpiles, which only included high hardness blasted ore (20–30 per cent of blasted ore). Changing the drilling grid’s size from 3.0 m × 3.8 m to 2.0 m × 2.6 m for high hardness rock with the presence of silicates resulted in a 40 per cent reduction in the P80 for the blasted material (from 459 to 278 mm), while changing the grid from 3.0 m × 3.8 m to 2.6 m × 3.2 m for high hardness rock without the presence of silicates generated a reduction of 25 per cent (from 270 to 204 mm). There were gains observed from the measurements at the mineral processing plant in terms of specific energy spent on comminution and on the consumption of grinding bodies in the rod mill. A study was undertaken using various methodologies to determine the optimum loading and hauling configuration for different haul routes at Callide Mine, a coal mine located in central Queensland. The study involved development of an effective flat haul model that was used to estimate production rates in truck and shovel circuits that employ two excavators of differing capacities then Queuing Theory to construct a capacity constraint model for scheduling purposes to assist in truck allocation and finally a cost model to determine the most cost effective fleet configuration.The model was calibrated using haul road design and performance data of trucks and excavators currently in use at the mine. The study examined the effects of cycle time for different truck and excavator fleet configurations on production rate and costs.The study found haulage cost was directly related to cycle time while production rate reduced with cycle time. The study indicates the approach taken in combining a cost model with a capacity constraint model offers a simple and effective method of scheduling an optimum number of trucks in a haulage circuit.CITATION:Campbell, S and Hagan, P, 2012. Safety performance in many companies and even industries has stalled in the last decade. Accidents rates are improving but more slowly and yet, serious accidents and fatality rates are not: in fact, these rates of more serious incidents have plateaued or deteriorating. In more dramatic cases, organizations that had ?exemplary? safety statistics, suddenly had a catastrophic or multi-fatality event occurring. Popular books such as In Search of Excellence of Peters and Waterman or Good to Great of Jim Collins created many delusional ?secrets? or recipes, to achieve great performance and yet, most of those ?great? or ?excellent? companies have now declined in their performance, some dramatically and some have fallen from grace, like Fanny Mae, a company Jim Collins identified as a ?great? one, that had to be bailed out in the latest financial crisis. These organizations share several ?delusions? about managing a business, and often, these delusions are created by academics, consultants and authors of popular books about (safety) management. More damaging however is that safety management is defined by a set of key practices or axioms: a focus on human error, compliance to rules and regulations, creating consistency of systems and actions, reacting to accidents and incidents and on prevention of those, measuring safety with performance metrics and rewarding employees on those measurements. All of these axioms contain the seeds of destruction, and they create conditions and dynamics that precede the disaster - and ironically, they are all 'good things' we do in safety management. For example, a mere focus on safety in the business, and the measurement of it, create a culture of repression of mistakes and incidents, leading to a situation where the organization knows incrementally less and less of risks and risktaking behaviour - until the day it all coincides destructively! This paper discusses seven such safety delusions and how they impact on the views and safety management approaches. They are: ??The delusion of (risk) control, that risks can actually be identified, analyzed and mitigated. ??The delusion of compliance, that mere compliance to rules will safeguard the business ??The delusion of consistency, that standard operating procedures will ensure safe operations ??The delusion of predictability, that accidents and trends tell us everything about the risks of the future ??The delusion of human error, that people are the weakest link and that it can actually be dealt with through discipline and enforcement. ??The delusion of statistical trends, that safety is measurable with statistics ??The delusion of invulnerability, that we have achieved high levels integrity and capability to deal wit risks. Organizations that suffered catastrophes all share some or all of these delusions and this paper traces how these played a role in many disasters, ranging from the Titanic, Challenger, Piper Alpha, Bhopal, BP Deepwater Horizon and many more.

Distinct trends in grinding mill technology have emerged in recent years. In an effort to optimize overall mill performance for the needs of the End User, broad measures of logistical speed, process flexibility, operational risk, and overall costs now exert greater influence on the specification of grinding equipment. As a result, innovative alternatives to conventional grinding mill structures, supports, drives, feed, and discharge configurations are now being offered and selected with greater frequency. This paper investigates these trends in grinding mill technology, utilizing optimization and decision-theory techniques. In particular, the paper considers how specific advances in process design, product engineering, manufacturing techniques, and mining operations continue to relax technological constraints, enabling further mill innovation. In this context, a methodology is presented, illustrating how proper selection and specification of grinding mill components and configuration can target an optimization of the four End-User performance measures listed above.

Within CRLÆs lifetime there have been a number of products that have proceeded through their life cycles. In each case market forces and technological advances have forced the cessation of the product. The company has then had to develop alternative outlets for its copper. Sometimes it has produced a similar product to fill the same market. In other cases the extra copper is sold as cathode. Today, CRL produces no semi-fabricated copper products and all cathode is sold. More recently, CRL has ventured into the sale of technology and manufacture of cathode motherplates. This area, whilst it is not what had been a traditional area of core business, has been found to be profitable.

Most mines are large producing 0-25 mmt annually. The coal is mine.) at depths ranging from .0-150 m 120-500 ft mining at 300 m .(,1000 ft) depth is anticipated in the future. Single and multiple seams ranging from 3-12 m 10-40 ft) in thickness are mined. Most overburden is unconsolidated and consists of sands, and sandy or silty clays. The stripping ratio (volume of overburden to volume of coal mined) varies from 3-L. The overburden and coal is mined in benches 8-12 m -(24-40ft) high; the high-wall angle is about 45 degrees. Bucket wheel and bucket chain excavators are commonly utilized for overburden and coal removal, Some of the large overburden stripping machines nave capacities. Ranging from 4400-10,000 bank cu ( 6000-14,000 BC) per hour. The overburden from the upper benches is transported around the pit using the trains and belt conveyors. It is deposited in the spoils using large stacker-conveyor systems capable of handling 2550-7300 cu m/hour (7500-10,000 cu yds/hour). The overburden from the bottom two or three benches is transported across the pit using the conveyor bridges which are computer controlled. Conveyor bridges capable of handling overburden up to 60 m (200 ft) high are currently in use; a 60 a (20e ft) high conveyor bridge has a capacity of 85 x 10 cu ( 118 x 10 cu yd) annually. The coal is loaded in the trains directly and shipped to power plants or coke oven plants.

O aço inoxidável ferrítico tipo 430 estabilizado com Nb, com e sem recozimento após laminação a quente, foi laminado a frio e submetido a recozimentos isotérmicos em temperaturas de 650, 700, 750 e 800°C por tempos variando entre 10 e 86400 s. A quantificação da fração recristalizada foi realizada pelo modelo de JMAK e pela microdureza ao longo do recozimento. A evolução da textura foi analisada via técnica de EBSD. Ocorreu o refino de grão após a recristalização, resultando em um tamanho médio de 8 mm. A temperatura de recristalização aconteceu a 750°C e esta teve maior efeito na recristalização que o tempo. Os expoentes de Avrami se situaram entre 0.8 e 1.2, significando nucleação em contorno de grão. A taxa de nucleação e de crescimento do grão diminuiu continuamente com o tempo. Em relação à textura, observou-se um aumento da intensidade das componentes (111)[121] e (111)[011] da fibra g e diminuição na intensidade da fibra a de deformação. Um modelo de cinética de recristalização do aço tipo 430 estabilizado com nióbio que leva em conta os processos de nucleação e crescimento foi obtido.

A empresa austríaca Maschinenfabrik Liezen com ampla experiência na fabricação de fresadoras de grande porte até 300°C desenvolveu e fabricou uma revolucionaria fresadora de alta capacidade (600.000 ton/ano), para operar de forma contínua em 800°C; nesse desenvolvimento de hardware e software foram também incorporadas várias otimizações operacionais e ambientais, sendo o destaque a fresagem modulada/inteligente, com precedente relevamento topográfico e termográfico para a localização dos defeitos superficiais, para a posterior fresagem com profundidade variável para a minimização de material retirado e simultânea eliminação dos defeitos localizados.

Neste trabalho, foram estudados os efeitos da irradiação de uma superfície polida do aço inoxidável tipo ASTM F138 com laser de pulsos ultracurtos. As irradiações foram realizadas variando-se a velocidade de varredura do laser, ou seja, a taxa de sobreposição espacial de pulsos. Foi observado que após a irradiação houve uma visível mudança na coloração da amostra. Também foi verificado que com o aumento da taxa de sobreposição de pulsos a superfície tendeu a tornar-se preta, ou seja, absorvedora de luz. Com essa técnica, pode-se realizar marcações com alto contraste sem que haja formação de camadas de óxidos, nitretos ou alterações microestruturais no metal, o que é importante para um material com a precisão que um implante exige.

"In this research, image analysis technique, Kuz-Ram and KCO Models were used to examineefficiency of the quarry blasts. Investigations were performed in Cendere region, Istanbul. As a firststep, image analysis software was used to determine particle size distribution of muckpiles.Additionally, the results of KuzRam and KCO fragmentation models were compared to the results ofthe image analysis technique. The efficiency of KuzRam and KCO models was investigated and theimportant points to be considered were explained. Additionally, the effect of the rock factor valueson the size distribution curves was investigated. The blasthole diameter is 89 mm. (3.5 in) in thestudied quarry. Each measured blast has a different burden, spacing and stemming length. Blastholes was drilled in a staggered pattern. It is concluded that, KuzRam and KCO models can be successfully used to determine fragment size distribution in Cendere Region Quarries, Istanbul. Site engineers can predict blast fragmentation using the theoretical fragmentation models and they may change blast design parameters before blasting operation if necessary. It is possible to calibrate the Kuz-Ram and KCO fragmentation models using the measurements obtained by image analysis technique."

"INTRODUCTION This report describes a method of horizontal drilling in an oil-producing formation underlying a 400-acre, approximately square plot of land in the Franklin Heavy oil field in Sugar Creek Township, Venango County, Pa. The method, which was developed on two previous projects in Ohio, 3/ consists of sinking a shaft to the bottom of a shallow oil sand and drilling holes in a general horizontal plane outward from the chamber in a pattern similar to that of the spokes of a wheel. The project was undertaken by the Venango Development Corporation in an attempt to find an efficient method of recovering oil from partly depleted sand formations.The Venango Development Corporation is composed of the following oil-producing and oil-refining companies and individuals: South Penn Oil Co., Forest Oil Corporation, Kendall Refining Co., Minard Run Oil Co., Quaker State Oil Refining Co., The Pennzoil Co., Alliance Oil Corpo¬ration, United Refining Co., Franklin Creek Refining Corporation, Canfield Oil Co., Pennsylvania Refining Co., Page Oil Co., Freedom Oil Co., D. W. and D. S. Grant, and J. P. Herrick, C. M. Davison and N. V. V. Franchot. Engineering features of the project were supervised by a committee off three engineers A. J. Saxe, chairman, W. M. Shoemaker, and C. N. Pfohl, who supervised the excavation of the shaft and the drilling of the first two holes by alternately spending a week at a. time at the project. The drilling method was under patent license from Leo Ranney, who served as technical advisor to the Venango Development Corporation; in addition, he furnished the design for the shaft and work chamber."

You have been involved with research activities in froth flotation and size reduction. What do you think the future holds for these technologies? Froth flotation and size reduction are essential processing steps common to almost all current mineral-processing operations. The most significant recent advances in both of these technologies have been in the increased size of equipment and in some alternative machine designs, such as the column cells and the high-pressure roller mills. I believe that the next major area of improvement in size reduction will be at least partially driven by an improved awareness of controlling the conditions that influence the efficiency of particle breakage. This would include factors such as water-chemistry influences, the influence of fines from classification, chemical grinding additives and better rheology control. In froth flotation, significant changes are currently taking place in the plant use of frothers. Also, there will be an increasing number of new collector chemistries for certain types of flotation, such as with oxide minerals, oxidized mineral recovery in sulfide systems and improved selectivity with certain sulfide mineral systems. You have been active in implementing new engineering technology in industry. What do you think will be the technological future of mineral processing? Being involved in the invention and industrial implementation of new technology has been one of the most positive experiences of my career. I also have had the unique experience of working in the chemical and petroleum industries as well as in mineral processing. In my opinion, the future of mineral processing will be an exciting, wonderful work area in which to be involved. The development of new technology in minerals processing offers a special challenge compared, for example, to that of chemistry or chemical engineering. In successful industrial innovation involving minerals, having a sound theory is not enough. Instead, what is required is a valid blend of a good idea, meaningful laboratory characterization and, most key, the experience necessary to adjust the plant in such a way to incorporate the idea. The complexity of engineering systems that contain solids, liquids and gases, as well as highly variable natural mineral properties, means that nothing new comes easily. In some cases, it has been difficult to explain how processes practiced in industry for decades actually work, in terms of physical and chemical fundamentals. On the other hand, when a new idea is successfully implemented, the economic and professional returns can be very rewarding. I know of no more challenging field of engineering than minerals processing. What is your view of the future of the minerals industry in general? The need for minerals, metals and coal will be with us for decades to come. In many aspects, the minerals industry became global much earlier than some of the other industrial sectors that are currently experiencing globalization. I believe that fair international competition is beneficial to the users of minerals, metals and coals and to those involved in producing such materials. The key word here for a global economy to work is "fair." So the various playing fields involved such as finance, profit return, regulation and labor should be relatively level for all the players involved. Competition is an amazing driving force for innovation. This has been true in the minerals industry during the last few decades. The mining industry is producing more at less cost per unit than ever before in our history. I anticipate that this trend will continue as long as the global political situation remains relatively stable.

La presente investigación refiere el patron de mineralización en Toquepala a través de un método de trabajo estadístico, el cual dispone de un valor promedio y representativo de un conjunto de valores, constituyéndose en sí mismo el punto de partida para hacer apreciaciones de tipo estadístico. Asimismo se describe la geología general, la mineralización por los tipos de roca, las zonas de mineralización y un estudio de la estadística del minado que comprende las reservas minadas de 1975 y 1976, encontrándose que el 68% de la producción mineral fue hecha de brechas y pórfido de dacita y en el que aproximadamente el 60% de la reserva actual está constituida por estas dos mismas unidades litológicas.

The melting phenomena of manganese ore, slag and alloys were studied in an experimental sessile drop furnace. Particles of approximately 20-60mg were placed on graphite substrates and then heated at a constant rate of 5°C/min up to 1830°C in a controlled gas atmosphere of Ar or CO. The shape of the particle was photographed with a digital video camera every second. It was observed that the melting behaviour can vary significantly, with some particles exhibiting a large softening/melting range. Selected samples were sectioned and then analysed with EPMA. The implications of the results on understanding industrial furnace operations are discussed.

While a sizable amount of data exist as to the activity and distribution of minor elements between matte and metal, there has been no unifying theory presented delineating the form of dissolution of these elements in molten sulfides. In order to alleviate that deficiency the literature concerning the behavior of As, Sb, Bi and Pb in mattes is reviewed. Models present in the literature, regarding the thermochemical behavior of minor elements, are tested, and new models are presented and evaluated using thermodynamic theory. The results of those analyses are used to predict optimum conditions for the volatilization of minor elements. The dearth of data on the behavior of minor elements in nickel mattes requires that this review focus on copper- iron mattes. An effort is made, however, to utilize basic knowledge regarding nickel sulfides and the interaction of nickel with the minor elements to predict the behavior of those elements in nickel-copper and nickel-iron mattes.
