Coal has traditionally been an integral part of life in Kentucky. Coal mining produces a large part of revenue for the Commonwealth of Kentucky and provides a significant number of jobs to the residents of eastern (less in western) Kentucky. Recently, however, the coal industry of Kentucky has had to endure many hardships. The Clean Air Act set forth sulfur dioxide emission standards which have severely affected much of the coal mining industry in Kentucky, because much of the coal mined in Kentucky has a high sulfur content. In this paper, the background around the effects of Clean Air Act on the coal industry is introduced. The economic and social effects of the Clean Air Act on the Kentucky coal mining are addressed.

THE purpose of this chapter is to present a general outline of the basic open-hearth process for the benefit of students, practicing open-hearth operators, and metallurgists who wish to review the subject. The discussion is limited to a description of the sequence and purpose of the operations, illustrated by data and examples. Subsequent chapters deal with more detailed and fundamental studies of the subject. The function of the basic open-hearth furnace is to convert various types of ferrous material into finished steel of given com- position and quality. In comparison with other steelmaking methods, the basic open-hearth process is one of the most versa- tile, both from the standpoint of the raw materials that can be used and the types of steel that can be produced. The process can be considered as a sequence involving melting, refining, and deoxidation. With some types of liquid-metal charges, the melting stage is not present, but refining and deoxidation in varying degrees are fundamental features of the process. GENERAL DISCUSSION OF BASIC OPEN-HEARTH PROCESS The first consideration in open-hearth practice is the type of charge on which the operation is based. This consists of three components-fluxing, oxidizing, and metallic materials. Fluxes. In the basic process the fluxing material is primarily lime, added in the form of either limestone (CaC03) or burnt lime (CaO) . This is supplemented by magnesia (MgO) and lime from the furnace bottom and banks. The function of these fluxes is to form a slag with the silica (SiO2) , manganese oxide (MnO), iron oxides (FeO and Fe203), and phosphorus oxide (P205) that are produced by the oxidation of varying amounts of the silicon, manganese, iron, and phosphorus in the charge during melting and refining. The slag, composed of the basic fluxes and the neutral and acid oxides, floats on top of the steel bath when the charge is melted. I. INTRODUCTION. THE central power-station. of the De Beers Consolidated Mines, Ltd., was designed and built under my supervision about five years ago. Since no detailed description of this plant has ever appeared, it may possess sufficient interest to warrant its publication, even at this late date. Although some additions may have been Blade to the plant, the following account, prepared from my notes, and accurate up to May, 1905 (at which time I severed my connection with the De Beers Com¬pany), will, I think, be found substantially correct. Certain local conditions governing the design of this plant should be stated first. If. GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS. The climate is hot and dry. The .region around Kimberley is arid and water is very scarce. The supply obtained from the mines contains so much material in solution that it is unfit for use in boilers or condensers (although tests recently made with a water-softening plant, built by Hans Reisert, of Germany, would indicate that water thus treated is suitable for boilers). And the amount of water required for concentrating about 30,000 tons of ore per day is so large that the question of adequate water-supply for this power-station had to be carefully considered. The rainy season extends from December to April, and the rainfall averages about 15 in. per year. Droughts are frequent; and in some years there is scarcely any rain at all. No entanto, até agora pouco foi avaliado sobre a fibra de cânhamo incorporada em matrizes poliméricas. Este estudo tem o objetivo de avaliar a resistência ao impacto deste tipo de compósito com matriz de poliéster reforçada com diferentes porcentagens de fibras de cânhamo. A resistência ao impacto aumenta proporcionalmente com a quantidade relativa de fibras incorporadas como reforço na matriz polimérica. Este desempenho foi relacionado com a dificuldade de ruptura imposta pelas fibras, resultante da interação da matriz de fibra de cânhamo / poliéster de forma a ajudar a absorção da energia de impacto.

Lenders do not normally participate in any project upside. The economics of lending dictate that banks can only accommodate a low probability of loan default and consequently banks' principal focus in mineral ""valuation"" is ensuring an acceptably comfortable probability of debt repayment. A simple conceptual explanation of lenders' risk / return position is outlined.

Fatigue is it the newest buzz word or is fatigue a real phenomenon that is creating safety and organisational risk for you? There is no debate that fatigue is natural, and it affects us all, just like gravity; however, there has been much debate on the severity of its impact in the workplace. For many years the impact was not measurable, hidden out of sight and, quite frankly, written off as the infamous ‘operator error’. Over the last several years, advancements in technology have provided safety and health professionals, sleep scientists, fatigue experts and organisations with the ability to monitor and detect fatigue events in real time, as well as predict and monitor increased risk for fatigue events. Caterpillar Safety Services has assembled an extensive and exceptional set of technologies that will provide the best methods and data to measure the impact of fatigue. "Zinc Industry in BelgiumBy March F. Chase, Consulting Metallurgist, Bureau of MinesBelgium for many years was the principal spelter producing country of the world. Gradually its production was surpassed by that of Germany, and Germany in turn lost first place by the production in the 77ti.tad States. For the ten years previous to 1914, 21.6 per cent of the world's spelter was produced in Belgium. Of this production approximately 40 per cent was exported. A large percentage of the balance was rolled and of the shoots thus produced a considerable quantity was also exported.From an economic standpoint even before the war, the Belgian industry was in a unique, if not praoarious, position. Dependent upon foreign countries for ore and foreign markets for sale of products, smeltor was at a distinct disadvantage when compared with some of those of other localities. These disadvantages were partly offset by cheap coal and labor and by whatever there is of value in experience and what we may term for want of a better expression smelting tradition. However intangible this latter may be, it did have and has today an influence on commercial operations.One must not overlook the effect it will have on the revival of the industry. It may not be the determining factor but the fact that for so many years this industry flourished in Belgium, and played such an important role in the industrial life of the country will decide many operators to attempt to re-establish their operations.In 1913 the Belgian spelter plants produced 204,220 long tons of spelter or approximately 20 per cent of the world's production. During this year 500,000 to of ore were treated. The actual value of all of the products derived from treating sine ore amounted to 225 million frames."

"INTRODUCTION As a part of the program of investigation of domestic sources of manganese ore, mining engineers of the Bureau of Mines obtained and examined samples of ore from six properties in the vicinity of Pioche, Lincoln County, Nev., and from one property near Caliente, Lincoln County, Nev. As the ores were too low-grade to be acceptable for the direct production of ferromanganese, their amenability to concentration by ore-dressing methods was investigated.In general, the Pioche ores had a low manganese content and, owing to extremely intimate association of manganese minerals with iron oxide and nonmetallic gangue, were refractory to concentration by ore-dressing methods. Only two samples (Zero Gap and Wheeler ores) were amenable to the production of concentrates that would sinter to a marketable plus 35-percent manganese grade. The Prince Consolidated and Ely Valley No. 1.ores were roasted and sintered to produce lead-silver-zinc fumes. The residues were of possible value as manganiferous iron ore. No marketable manganese products were made from Calton semi-oxidized ore, but over 80 percent recoveries of lead, silver, and zinc were made by bulk sulfide flotation followed by Diming of the sulfide concentrate. No satisfactory results were obtained by treatment of Golden Eagle and Ely Valley No. 2 ores.The Cudverwell ore was amenable to the production of high-grade manganese concentrates by ore-drssing methods. However, fine grinding was required to effect mineral liberation, and loss of manganese as slime limited the mangenese recoveries obtainable.In the coarse of the investigations, many data were obtained and compiled, but for the sake of brevity, several data, of secondary importance have been omitted or condensed, and only the tests giving the more promising results are discussed in detail. For convenience, the report has been divided into two parts, one opertaining to the Pioche ores and the other summarzing results obtained by testing Culverwell ore."

While silica ores are generally considered to have little value, those with exceptionally low B and P content have, potentially, significant worth if processed for use in photovoltaics. The sales value of a cubic meter of ?run of the mill? silica sand is $42 per cubic meter (retail and delivered). If the silica sand can be used to produce solar silicon, its value after processing is $34,000 per cubic meter. Factors that impact the suitability of silica for direct processing in production of photovoltaics are examined.

The paper presents the development of a spontaneous heating liability index (SHLI) of coal based on a mathematical approach. The parameters for the calculation of this index have been determined by differential scanning calorimetric studies. Thirty-one coal samples representing both fiery and non-fiery coal seams of different ranks have been collected from different Indian coalfields and their SHLI values have been determined. In addition, the susceptibility of these samples to spontaneous combustion has been ascertained by standard crossing-point temperature measurement. The moisture percentage of all the samples has been obtained by proximate analysis. A comparative study between SHLI and crossing-point temperature, along with moisture percentage, indicates that SHLI predicts the proneness of coal to spontaneous heating more accurately.

Hydraulic fracturing to precondition the rock mass in high seismic risk environments has great potential. Unfortunately, there are many unanswered questions about how to best implement a hydraulic fracturing program at individual mine sites, and even how to best use our engineering tools to evaluate these plans. To give the hydraulic fracturing field tests at LKAB’s Kiirunavaara Mine the best chance of success, fully-coupled, discontinuum numerical modelling Itasca’s 3DEC code was used together with statistical simulations of the fracture network. For modelling purposes, it was assumed that hydraulic fracturing successfully reduces seismic risk through 1) the creation of hydraulic fractures along a plane at each injection site, and 2) activation of existing discontinuities. A variety of scenarios for the mine were evaluated, which focused on site specific uncertainties (such as the spacing of the pre-existing discontinuities) and practical solutions (such as the hydraulic fracture spacing, selection of injection medium, and hydraulic fracture site location relative to production). The discrete fracture network (DFN) realizations were developed using available statistical data for discontinuities near where hydraulic fracturing was planned.

A preliminary survey of coke and steel plants conducted by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Office of the Solid Fuels Administrator for War and with the advice of the Coke Production Committee indicated that production of pig iron could be increased. appreciably if present blast furnaces were supplied with a more uniform coke.4/ Nonvarying percentages of ash , sulfur , and fixed carbon in the coke , together with uniform physical characteristics , such as size , strength , and porosity , would aid the blast -furnace operator greatly in his trial - and - error methods of obtaining maximum production . With nonuniform raw materials he must employ certain factors of safety in operation , such as an excess of coke , an excess of limestone , and operation of the furnace below the maximum rate . Even so , he often has trouble from iron not being up to specifications , hot tops , high blowing pressures , furnace hanging up , etc. The more uniform his raw materials (of which coke is probably the most important) , the nearer to ideally can he run his furnace and thereby save raw material and increase production . One cause of nonuniformity of the coke produced by ordinary American plant practice is the prevailing lack of precise control of the bulk density ' of the coal charge in the byproduct oven . This report summarizes the available information on the subject of bulk density of crushed coal and its control . It includes brief reviews of some of the literature , some results obtained at plants visited by the authors , and results of a few preliminary tests made at the Pittsburgh Station of the Bureau of Mines .

The Culampajß auriferous district is located in the northern sector of the eastern edge of the homonymous hill, Catamarca Province, Argentina. Tajo Largo mine is situated in the southern flank of Las Minas gulch at an approximate height of 3.600 m above sea level. In the studied area main outcrops are orthogneiss rocks of Chango Real Formation. The ore mineral is native gold with a lesser amount of pyrite, chalcopyrite, haematite, limonite, malachite, azurite and covellite. These ore mineral assemblages are disseminated in quartz veins filling tension fractures in the host orthogneiss.Several types of inclusions have been recognised, including three phase H2O-CO2liq-CO2vap inclusions, polyphase inclusions with H2O-CO2 and one or more solid phases, and two phase aqueous inclusions. In the three phase H2O-CO2liq-CO2vap inclusions the Tmclath is about 1¦C and the CO2 liquid-vapour homogenisation occurs at 26 - 28¦C, to liquid phase. The homogenisation temperature of H2O-CO2 occurs at 365 - 380¦C in the aqueous phase. This set of data defined a solution with a salinity of 14, 4 wt per cent NaCl equivalent and a density of 0.84 g/cm3. In the two phase aqueous inclusions the melting temperature (Tm) of -5.4¦C and the eutectic point (Te) in -38¦C indicates a salinity of about 7.5 wt per cent NaCl equivalent, with the probable presence of Ca2+. Density of fluid is about 0.83 g/cm3. Homogenisation temperature ranges between 260¦ and 280¦C. The pressure, temperature and salinity of fluids in the polyphase inclusions suggest an early fluid of high density and high salinity. The three-phase fluid inclusions may be the result of an unmixing-phase separation of post magmatic hydrothermal fluid due to pressure decrease along fractures. It is suggested that the deposit was formed during the late magmatic hydrothermal stage genetically linked to granitic rocks and can be comparable with the intrusion-related gold system of Baker (2003).

This study elucidates a new idea to predict mine fire levels by employing several machine learning techniques. A total of 120 patterns of various mine fire influencing parameters, such as oxygen, nitrogen, carbon monoxide, and temperature, were compiled from the Adularya coal mine in Turkey. Techniques like t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding (t-SNE) and k-means clustering were used to process the data, and support vector classification (SVC) was executed to predict various levels of the mine fire. The results revealed that the proposed model has higher credibility to predict the various levels of underground mine fires.

O presente trabalho tem como objetivo mostrar os ganhos financeiros e produtivos do Laminador de Aços Longos da CSN através da otimização do plano de passes. Analisando a árvore de calibração identificamos a possibilidade de ganhos com a unificação de famílias de bitolas. No laminador temos duas famílias: Família Ø 5,5 mm (bitolas 5,5; 7,0; 9,0; 11,0; 14,30) e Família Ø6,3mm (bitolas 6,3; 8; 10; 12,5 e 16) para a fabricação destas bitolas utilizamos até 18 passes no laminador duo horizontal/vertical e mais ate 10 passes no laminador acabador cantilever. Após um estudo detalhado do plano de passes existente, verificou-se a possibilidade da eliminação e unificação de passes entre as duas famílias. Para corroborar as alterações propostas, decidiu-se utilizar um modelo matemático que representasse os passes e realizasse os cálculos para verificar as reduções e capacidades dos equipamentos visando minimizar os riscos e custos adicionais com modificações de ferramental. Após mais de 60 horas de simulações e testes, foi desenhado um novo plano de passes para a Laminação eliminando-se a necessidade de troca de 8 cadeiras, o que representa um aumento de 6 horas no tempo disponível para produção por mês e também a redução de 8 pares de cilindros de laminação, redução de guias e roletes, e tempo de preparação na oficina de cilindros. Só após verificação e aprovação desta etapa foram iniciados os testes no laminador que confirmaram os resultados obtidos nas simulações.

Heissler is a member of the board of directors of Liebherr International AG.It all started for the Switzerland-based company when Hans Liebherr first recognized a need for heavy equipment in the construction industry, Heissler said. His first product, introduced in 1949, was the TK10, a mobile crane that, at the time, was a groundbreaking innovation to the heavy construction industry. From there, the company began its growth into a world-leading heavy equipment manufacturer that always relied on innovation.In October, Liebherr gathered a group of mining and construction magazine editors in Leoben, Austria to take a look at the company’s latest addition to the global mining and construction markets. On the mining side, Liebherr provided a demonstration of its T-236 100-t (110-st) haul truck and the PR- 766 50-st (55-st) crawler tractor. The one-day demonstration took place at the Erzberg iron mine near Leoben, where both machines are being proven.The Erzberg Mine, operated by VA Ersberg, has been in operation for about 1,300 years and is said to be Europe’s largest surface mine. It employs about 230 people and mines about 12 Mt/a (13,200 million stpy) of ore, producing about 3 Mt/a (3.3 million stpy) of fine-grained iron ore.T-236 rigid-frame truckThe new T-236 rigid-frame dump truck, with a diesel electric drive system, is Liebherr’s entry into the 100-t (110-st) class and is the first in this class with a four-corner, oilimmersed braking system. The haul truck was first introduced during the 2016 MinExpo in Las Vegas, NV. The unit has since successfully completed its testing phase and is currently in its first field operation trials at the Erzberg iron mine in Austria."

Potassium fertilizers (potash) are mined in a handful of countries in the Northern Hemisphere. Potash is either expensive or unavailable to the farmers of the Southern Hemisphere. Alkaline alteration of K-feldspar rock (ultrapotassic syenite) in autoclave in the presence of Ca2+ generates a mixture of K-bearing calcium-aluminum-silicate-hydrate (C-A-S-H) minerals that potentially can be used as an alternative local fertilizer. This work investigates the effect of processing temperature (200 °C, 220 °C, and 230 °C) and time (from 0.5 to 3.0 h) on pH, mineralogy, and elemental availability of the C-A-S-H mineral mixture. Increasing temperature results in an increased conversion of K-feldspar and increased content of both the mineral tobermorite (Ca5Si6O16(OH)2·4H2O) and amorphous phase in the resulting C-A-S-H mixture; increasing time results in an increased conversion of α-dicalcium silicate hydrate into tobermorite. The amount of K leached from the mixture is relatively constant across all processing conditions. Hydrothermal alteration in autoclave of K-feldspar-bearing rocks such as ultrapotassic syenite permits the synthesis of a potential potassium fertilizer which alkalinity and mineralogy can be tailored according to soil requirements.

George E. Collins, Nacoochee, Ga. (communication to the Secretary): The results tabulated below were obtained at the Reynolds mill, White county, Ga. They were noted, not with a view to investigating the point discussed by Mr. Clark, but in course of a test on a working scale to determine the com parative saving from a given free-milling ore on copper and silvered plates respectively. In every case the bullion assayed was the result of a separate clean-up on a considerable quantity of ore. The ore varied widely in grade and in other respects, but the runs bracketed in the table were made at the same time, in adjoining batteries, and on similar types of ore. In a * Result modified by the addition to the bullion-shipment of a little impure bullion left over from previous clean-ups.. On these occasions, the strips of copper were removed from the tables, and: their lower surfaces were cleaned. Hence the higher yield reported.
