WHEN the Bureau of Mines initiated the program of large-scale research and development in the field of synthetic liquid fuels authorized in the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act of April 5, 1044, the Coal Preparation Section was assigned the task of obtaining data on the preparation characteristics of the coal in large reserves that might be adaptable to use in this new industry. It is natural that, as the rapidly developing general research program brought about new concepts of raw-material quality, preferred geographical location, and the like, the orientation of coal-preparation investigations should have undergone some change. The first major assignment was the sampling and testing of a series of typical American coals deemed to he suitable for hydrogenation based on early research work conducted by the Bureau of Mines. This first series of tests has been completed and is reported in this paper.

They may not remember the time when "practical oil men" opposed the invasion of engineers into the field of petroleum production. By their excellent contributions they established themselves. In the popular mind, engis veers are practical men whereas physicists and chemists are suspected of being theoretical. It will be best to annihilate this misconception right now at the beginning of a closer relationship between petroleum engineers. geophysicists, and geochemists.

NIOSH has recently completed a study of the interaction between polyurethane (PUR) and coal mine roof in order to determine the mechanism of reinforcement, in both highly fractured rock and unfractured rock. Four case studies of PUR rein­forcement are presented. At a West Virginia site, a borehole camera revealed the location of roof voids and guided the PUR injection. By injecting polyure­thane into a zone from 0.6 to 1.8 m (2?6 ft.) high in the roof, a roof beam was created and ongoing intersection falls were halted. In another highly fractured roof in a western Pennsylvania mine, a total of 5.8 cm (2.3 in.) of rubbleized rock was found in a zone up to 3 m (10 ft.) into the roof. Untargeted PUR injection filled approximately 1/2 of the fractures. These two case studies showed that it is not necessary to fill up 100% of the void space to create stability. In the other two field sites, polyurethane was injected into weak, but unfractured roof. Post-injec­tion video monitoring showed that weak bedding planes were hydraulically wedged open and polyure­thane injected along bedding. The reinforcement value of this injection method is limited because of the wafer-thin layer of PUR introduced along bedding, and the lack of a PUR ??webbing?? which would serve as a structural framework to provide strength. It was determined that video inspection prior to PUR injection can aid in identifying the fracture zones to target, and minimize ??blind?? pumping and loss of PUR.

To test the effects of impact on mine seals, a projectile generator and two seals have been constructed. The projectile generator is a 12-inch (30.5 cm) inner diameter steel pipe with a 4-inch (10 cm) wall, is 8.5 feet (2.6 m) in length, and sealed on one end. Projectiles are propelled by a charge of black powder with a wooden wad and are held in place by foam sabots in the bore. This system, combined with the large bore, allows firing of many different potential projectiles that may be found in an underground mine at a high velocity into the seals.

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is the most common occupational illness in the United States, with 30 million workers exposed to excessive noise levels [NIOSH 1996] every day. Of particular concern is the mining industry; which has the highest prevalence of hazardous noise exposure of any major industry sector [Tak et al. 2009] and is second only to the railroad industry in prevalence of work-ers reporting hearing difficulty [Tak and Calvert 2008]. This document is for operators, safety personnel, and mechanics in the mining industry who are not specialists in noise control engineering or acoustics. Evaluations of successful and unsuccessful attempts at controlling noise on several large, underground metal mining machines are detailed to illustrate the basic principles of noise control. Once personnel understand the guidelines and principles of noise control, they will be able to ¦evaluate the extent of a noise problem; ¦determine the best approach to the problem; and ¦apply the most appropriate solution. Because of the insidious nature of NIHL, it can go unnoticed until a considerable loss of hearing has occurred. In some cases, diagnosis is delayed because an exposed individual claims to have become accustomed to the noise. In reality, that person may have already suffered irreversible hearing loss. Humans can hear sounds in the frequency range from about 20 to 20,000 Hertz (Hz). Within this range, NIHL usually begins in the frequency region around 4,000?6,000 Hz, the upper levels of the speech region. The first noticeable symp-toms include difficulty understanding higher pitched voices, such as the voices of females and children, and difficulty understanding certain consonant sounds, which are primarily high frequency in nature. The extent of NIHL varies depending on the level and duration of noise exposure and on an individual?s susceptibility; despite having similar noise exposure, individuals can experience differing degrees of hearing loss, or none at all. NIHL is almost always preventable. To reduce or eliminate the possibility of NIHL, an individual?s noise environment must be analyzed and appropriate action taken to reduce noise exposure.

Se diferenció entre muestras afectadas directamente por la actividad minera (tajo) y muestras provenientes de zonas no sometidas a la actividad minera (entorno natural), pero dentro de las inmediaciones de la mina.

PT Freeport Indonesia’s Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) is a block cave mining operation that has been in production for 15 years. DOZ is located approximately 900 m below surface and has an average production rate of more than 5000 t/d. The footprint of the extraction level will ultimately be 900 m long and average more than 200 m wide. The undercut level is located 20 m above the extraction level.While developing Panel 1K on the northern portion of the extraction level, a major geotechnical problem was encountered when there was a change in lithology and an associated fault intersection. A large collapse of the hanging wall of the extraction level drifts occurred in the area of the fault intersection between February and March 2011. This was followed by a collapse of one of the undercut level drifts directly above the extraction level in May 2011.It was suggested that the best approach to mitigate risk during rehabilitation was to systematically open up the failed area under the protection of a steel set support system. To achieve this, approximately 60 t of grout was injected from the undercut level to fill the voids created when the rock mass between the two levels failed. A ground penetrating radar system was used to survey the condition of the rock mass between the two levels before and after the injection of grout. After the grout injection phase was completed to a satisfactory level of confidence, rehabilitation activities started on the extraction level by taking out the now consolidated material from inside the drift in 2 m advances from under steel sets initially constructed in secured ground.Controlled blasting was the key aspect to the success of the initiative to open up just enough of the drift to systematically support the rock mass before the next set was installed. The systematic support consisted of in-cycle shotcrete sprayed over mesh pinned to the exposed rock, as effectively as possible, with splitsets before spiling the next advance’s protection canopy with rebar. Once secure, a combination of steel set and pumped concrete was installed as the final support. Added value is a term loosely used in the industry, but what exactly does it mean? What does it take to make a value-added product and more importantly how does a company maintain the value added to its products? Most people agree that value-added means the value of a mineral minus the cost to produce it. But what is misleading is that producing value added products does not necessarily guarantee the profitability of the products. In some cases firms that make "value-added" products are not very profitable. It is not only important to understand how to make a value-added product but also how competitive forces in the market can erode the value added. Therefore, when we look at value-added opportunities, we must understand how to obtain the value added and more importantly how to maintain the value. There are four major factors that limit a company's ability to add value to its products. This paper will examine these factors and will use the ground calcium carbonate and mica industries as examples.

There is no war between electricity and compressed air. Each one has its field of usefulness, and in that field each is supreme. In spite of commercial interests, in spite of prejudices and the enthusiasm of the inventor, the thing that is best will survive and flourish. At least ten years ago, our engineering papers contained large advertisements and pages of reading-matter about the application of electricity to mines, recording the introduction of numerous rock-drilling plants, and claiming that the problem had been solved, greatly to the advantage of the miner and with promise of large profits to the manufacturers of electrical apparatus. Edison and Thomson labored to apply electricity to mines, and each believed that the probabilities of success were great. This was the period of the solelloid rock-drill, which mas admirably suited, theoretically, to the percussive principle and in the development of which hundreds of thousands of dollars have been spent without satisfactory result. I have searched in vain for a standard mining equipment where electric rock-drills are in constant, commercial operation. During a recent trip made from New York to California, I visited most of the important mines of the West and failed to discover a single electric equipment, so far as this class of mining-work is concerned. If any one will inform me where there exists today an electric-drilling equipment in constant service in mines in the United States, I shall be glad to receive the information. Georgia, since 1829, has produced nearly $18,000,000 from her gold mines, but in late years the output has dwindled to insignificance. In view of present universal efforts to increase gold production, it seems pertinent to record some recent observations in that field, briefly review its past and weigh probabilities of reviving gold mining there. Little in this paper can be claimed as new or original, and it does not present results of a detailed or profound investigation of the whole region. The Allatoona gold mine was reopened in January, 1932, and explored at greater depth during the period from January to June of that year. A number of other abandoned mines were visited, but since the workings, in common with most such mines in Georgia, were flooded or caved, underground conditions could not be examined. For a wider knowledge of the subject, a search was made through available pertinent literature and statistics, a bibliography of which is appended hereto. To all the sources obligations are gratefully acknowledged. Production The discovery of gold in Georgia, in 1829, led to an influx of 6000 to 7000 miners and a production of over $200,000 in the following year. A branch of the United States Mint, established at Dahlonega in 1838, accounted for $6,115,569 up to the time of the Civil War. The output fluctuated greatly from year to year, with an all-time peak of $582,782 in 1843. In only one other year, 1845, was the half million mark exceeded. After the war mining began again, but 1883 is the last year for which an output of $200,000 is reported. Placers, always the main source of production, were yielding less and less, and in spite of increased quartz-mining activities the downward trend continued. The last year in which there was a production of $100,000 was 1902. In 1914, $16,270 came from 26 placers and 11 deep mines, with the latter reporting 1750 tons of $3 average value. In 1925, one placer and four lode mines that mined 8100 tons assaying $1.19 per ton produced $9500. One placer and one quartz mine, operating in 1930, reported a total output of $4194. Table 1 pictures the waning output.

That the maintenance of proper air conditions is a most important factor in the control of occupational hazards is shown by the large amount of material presented each year through the technical journal's on the effects on workers of injurious dusts, gases, and variations in temperature and humidity.. SUMMARY OF RECENT LITERATURE ON EFFECTS ON WORKERS OF EXPOSURE TO DUSTS The subject of the control of dust and dust diseases continues to be a matter of serious concern in most of the industrial countries of the world, as indicated by the following summary of reports published in a number of foreign countries as well as in the United States. Australia. The Workmen's Compensation Act of 1920 for New South Wales3 provided for the promulgation of schemes for the compensation of workers dis- abled by silica or other dust. In 1924 the prevalence of silicosis and tuberculosis among Sydney stonemasons, quarrymen, sewer miners and rockchoppers was investigated by a Technical Committee of Inquiry, appointed upon the recommendation of the New South Wales Board of Trade. The findings of this committee were published by the Government in 1925. No scheme was promulgated by the Government and in 1926 the Act was amended limiting its scope to workmen disabled by disease caused by silica-dust. This was promulgated and gazetted on September 16, 1927, and applies to men working in sandstone as stonemasons, quarrymen, rockchoppers, and sewer miners in the County of Cumberland.

Neste trabalho é apresentado uma metodologia para caracterização de propriedades ópticas e espessura de óleo depositado em folha-de-flandres por elipsometria. Folhas-de-flandres precisam receber ao final do seu processo de produção um fino filme de óleo para proteger a folha contra abrasão e facilitar o desempilhamento quando é armazenada em fardos. Para medida da espessura desta camada de óleo foi desenvolvido um procedimento eficaz com o uso de um Elipsômetro Espectrométrico (ou Espectral) de Polarizador Rotativo. Foram comparados os resultados com estudos feitos pelo método da balança de hidrofil, técnica utilizada atualmente, mostrando um aumento na sensibilidade da medida.

Controlling natural-water drives to effect efficient and economic production of petroleum, through wells, from reservoir sands and rocks is a problem of major importance in the oil-producing industry. Water-drive fields are characterized by large quantities of mobile water under high pressure immediately below the oil in the flanks or extraneous parts of reservoir formations, Hence, the water, which is in fluid connection with the oil and a source of a large proportion of the energy available for moving it, advances up-structure to replace it. This phenomenon of water moving crestward into the oil-bearing parts of the reservoir and replacing oil is termed edgewater encroachment. The mechanism by which oil is flushed out and continually replaced by water as the hydocarbon content of the field is depleted must be understood if natural-water drives arc to be used successfully to, induce efficient recovery of oil from its reservoir rocks. Until recently, the function of water in the production of oil has been somewhat obscure and was not given the consideration it deserved in early petroleum production-research programs because of the greater importance associated with and the effort devoted to investigations concerning the relations of natural gas to production of oil. Thus, with virtually no fundamental information at hand, it is not surprising that at first edgewater was considered a necessary evil, and the manner in which it was dealt with depended largely on the experience of the operators. During the intervening years, however, practical information on encroachment of edgewater in oil sands has been widely disseminated as a result of studies of oil-field depletion, and many theories pertaining to petroleum-reservoir energy and performance have been advanced; these theories necessarily included consideration of edgewater as an integral -art of the reservoir fluids and a source of energy for propelling hydrocarbon fluids through the reservoir and to the surface of the ground.

O refino secundário é um processo onde a homogeneização do aço e as flotações de inclusões ocorrem no banho metálico, cujo conhecimento do tempo de mistura é necessário na produção de aços limpos. A panela, principal vaso onde ocorre o processo, contem plugues ou bicos de injeção de gás inerte, podendo ser utilizados argônio ou nitrogênio, que são responsáveis pela rinsagem do aço. Devido à importância desta etapa neste processo, este trabalho objetivou realizar o estudo do escoamento bifásico do aço na panela com duas configurações diferentes, sendo a configuração um com dois plugues de gás inerte: ambos a meio raio e a configuração dois com dois plugues de gás inerte, um a meio raio e outro no centro da panela. Neste projeto foi utilizada fluidodinâmica computacional, CFD, para a realização das malhas e simulações que forneceram as curvas de traçador e o perfil de velocidade para ambas as configurações. Os resultados simulados indicam que a configuração dois é a mais indicada para o escoamento bifásico, sendo a melhor opção para ser utilizada no modelo de panela industrial.

"INTRODUCTION In the manufacture, storage, transportation, and use of combustible gases and vapors, explosion hazards, which at times may be present when air becomes mixed with the gases and vapors, become of primary importance. Such conditions are especially dangerous where large volumes of gaseous atmosphere are involved, because an explosion under such circumstances is capable of doing tremendous damage to both property and personnel.Because of its interest in safety in the mining and allied industries, the Federal Bureau of Mines has investigated, and published results dealing with, the explosibility of various types of combutible atmospheres. The explosion hazards of natural gases have received attention, and results giving the limits of inflammability and ignition temperatures in air have been determined and published. 4/ Other investigations have shown how explosions of natural gas-air mixtures may be prevented by the addition of nitrogen and carbon dioxide. 5/Because of the increased demand for crude oil for war purposes, the application of secondary-recovery methods of stimulating oil production have received considerable attention during the last few years. The process consists in the injection of natural gas into partly depleted oil wells to cause the oil in the sands to flow into producing wells and so increase the amount of recoverable oil. 6/"

Bismuth is a useful metal and rather an uncommon one . The element probably constitutes much less than one-millionth part of the earth's crust , but the potential supply - to no small extent as a by-product of the production of lead and copper with which it is associated in nature has tended for many decades to exceed the demand. A single mine in Bolivia could readily flood the world's markets , and considerable quantities of bismuth are allowed to escape recovery at many smelting plants .
