The paper presents a study on the influence of face retreat rate in longwall coal mining on surface subsidence. It shows possibilities to influence dynamic ground movement by using a specific and controlled winning regime. For this, a dynamic stochastic prediction model used by DMT in Germany will be proved and adjusted on the specific character of geology in the Northern Appalachian coal field. Occurring ground movements such as inclination, curvature and deformation can be analyzed under static and dynamic points of view. It is theoretically shown that the face retreat rate has only a small influence on the static deformation values, but directly affects rate and acceleration of subsidence and deformation processes. The study shows that because of low mining depth and high mined thickness, static deformation values have the largest impact to surface objects. This implies that high face retreat rates don?t affect the impact on surface objects.

O sopro de oxigênio é a principal operação durante o processo de refino de aço em aciarias BOF (Basic Oxygen Furnace). Este sopro é feito por uma lança de injeção de oxigênio através de bocais supersônicos, que devem ser dimensionados para as condições específicas de operação, como por exemplo, vazões e pressões de oxigênio, altura de banho, altura da lança em relação ao banho, etc. O mau dimensionamento destes bocais tem influência direta no tempo e eficiência de processo, além de comumente resultar em desgaste prematuro dos bocais e na retirada do bico de operação. Este tipo de falha tem sido observado em bicos da Vallourec Brasil. No presente trabalho será apresentada a metodologia de estudos e resultados de análise metalográfica em amostras de um bico de lança usado pela da empresa, além de simulações CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) realizadas para se caracterizar o mecanismo de desgaste dos bocais. Estas informações foram utilizadas como base para o redimensionamento dos bocais, objetivando conter os impactos causados pelo desgaste.

O objetivo deste trabalho é utilizar a termodinâmica computacional para estudar as propriedades de escórias iniciais dessulfurantes utilizando misturas com diferentes fluxantes: fluorita, sodalita, borra de alumínio, B2O3 e ilmenita. A princípio, as misturas foram definidas e em seguida foram realizadas simulações para o aquecimento dessas misturas a 1350 ºC por meio do software FactSage 7.2. Assim, foi calculado o fator de dessulfuração (FDeS) para cada mistura com base nas condições de equilíbrio. As misturas contendo 5 e 10% de fluorita e 5% de sodalita foram as que apresentaram maior FDeS. Em contrapartida, as misturas com 10,15 e 20% de B2O3 tiveram os piores resultados nessa análise. Misturas da literatura também foram simuladas a fim de se obter o FDeS e relacioná-lo com a eficiência.

BECAUSE of its magnitude, and the type of occurrence, the deposit of boron minerals in the Kramer district, Kern County, California, is unlike any other in the world. Discovery of this vast deposit has brought about many changes in the borax industry, so a discussion of the geology, and the occurrence, would not be complete without a brief history of the development of the borax industry. Until the discovery of boron minerals in the desert regions of California and Nevada some seventy years ago, borax was imported from Tibet and India, principally for medicinal purposes, at almost prohibitive prices. Following the discovery of commercial deposits of boron minerals in California and Nevada, and the subsequent development of new uses for borax and boric acid, the consumption has steadily increased until today borax is used in some form or other in every household.

O presente trabalho teve o intuito de avaliar, em planta piloto, a influência da perda de pressão de sucção dos gases de exaustão nos parâmetros de produtividade da sinterização, consumo específico de combustível, rendimento da mistura total e qualidade do sínter. Foram realizados testes com diferentes valores de pressão de sucção dos gases de exaustão controlados em 1.200, 1.000 e 800mmH2O. A partir dos resultados dos testes avaliados foi possível verificar a influência da perda de pressão de sucção dos gases de exaustão no desempenho do processo de sinterização e seu impacto na qualidade do sínter produzido. Os resultados demonstraram que com o aumento crescente da perda de pressão de sucção dos gases de exaustão ocorreu significativa queda de produtividade da sinterização, queda dos valores de índice de degradação sob redução (RDI), queda do consumo de combustível e aumento dos valores de índice de redutibilidade (IR), rendimento da mistura total e teste de tambor (TI).

Retreat mining is one of the most hazardous operations conducted underground. One of the keys to miner safety and an efficient recovery of the reserves is to design adequately sized production pillars to prevent pillar squeezes, excessive pillar spalling, severe floor heave, roof falls, and pillar bumps. Currently, few pillar design approaches are available which consider the abutment pressures generated by the gob. The Bureau of Mines is developing a method called Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) to aid in the design of retreating sections. Back analysis of 42 case studies indicates that ARMPS can be helpful in predicting stability during retreat mining operations.

"There seems to be some confusion between the terms carbon black and lamp black, although in American lampblack is generally understood to be a soot formed by the smudge process. In this process oil, coal tar, resin or some solid, or carbonaceous substance is burned in an insufficient quantity of air, while on the other hand carbon black is a product resulting from the incomplete combustion of gas and is deposited by actual contact of flame upon a metallic surface.The various carbons, such as gas retort coke, oil retort coke, graphite, carbon black, lampblack, vine black, wood-pulp,black, willow charcoal, and blacks made from refuse material such as leather have different characteristics as to flocculence strength of color, and physical structure. These blacks are made by one of the following methods:(1) Formation by direct contact of a flame upon a depositing surface.(2) Production by combustion of an oil, tar, etc., in an inadequate supply of air; the soot is allowed to slowly settle out on the floors and the walls of the collecting chambers.(3) Carbonization of solids and subsequent reduction to a state of small subdivision.(4) Production by heating carbonaceous vapors or gases to a decomposition temperature by external heating with or without air in the forming chamber. This is usually referred to as cracking or thermal decomposition."

Free cyanide has been successfully determined in ground and surface water by isolation using a microdiffusion technique followed by a pyridine-barbituric acid photometric finish. The determinable free cyanide includes hydrocyanic acid, ionic cyanide, and the cyanide of weak complexes such as cadmium, lead, manganese, and zinc cyanide. Complexes of copper, iron, nickel, and silver are sufficiently strong so the dissociation into free cyanide does not occur at the microdiffusion pH 7. Cyanate, sulfide, and thiocyanate do not interfere. Samples containing as little as 0.005 mg/L are successfully analyzed. The relative standard deviation is <10%. Samples stored at pH >I2 in the dark are stable at least three weeks.

Electrochemical methods including cyclic voltammograms, square wave voltammograms, chronopotentiometry are applied to characterize the reduction potentials of Na+ and Li+ ions in LiCl-KCl melts. According to theoretical calculation, the reduction potential for Na+ is slightly more negative than Li+ in NaCl-LiCl-KCl melts at 450℃. However, by electrochemical measurements, the reduction potential of Na+ is slightly more positive than Li+ in the above melt and the potential difference between Na+ and Li+ reaches 0.16-0.2V on an inert W electrode in 1.0-2.0 wt% NaCl-LiCl-KCl melts. An active Pb electrode is used to improve the removal rate of Na+ from LiCl-KCl melts. The reduction potentials for both Na+ ions and Li+ ions on a Pb electrode shift to more positive values and the reduction currents become larger. After 6h electrolysis on a Pb electrode at -3.0V, the practical removal efficiency of Na+ ions reaches 90.12% and the reduced products contain metallic Na and Li with a Na/Li mass ratio of 4.25/1.

Este artigo apresenta a influência da temperatura e da atmosfera de secagem sobre a resistência mecânica de um aglomerado esférico, com diâmetro entre 3 mm e 8 mm, constituído de pellet feed e silicato de sódio, produzido através de pelotamento em discos e endurecido em temperaturas até 550ºC. O aglomerado obtido a partir deste processo apresenta características que permitem que o mesmo possa ser transportado a longas distâncias e manuseado até a sua utilização na sinterização. As principais técnicas experimentais utilizadas neste estudo foram difração de raios-X, espectroscopia Raman, microscopia eletrônica de varredura e análise térmica. O aglomerado foi submetido à secagem em temperaturas entre 100°C e 550ºC e atmosferas constituídas de ar atmosférico e/ou CO2. Durante o processo de secagem, observou-se a influência da temperatura e da atmosfera sobre a resistência à compressão do aglomerado após exposição à água, assim como na morfologia do silicato de sódio, evidenciando uma dependência entre elas. O uso de CO2 durante a secagem mostrou-se eficiente para a formação de um aglomerado com maior resistência mecânica após exposição à água.

Introduction The South African Iron and Steel Co. Ltd., in Sishen, operates a large iron ore mine in the Cape Province of the Republic of South Africa. The mine is about 600 km (370 miles) west of Johannesburg. Its annual capacity is 100 Mt (110 million st) of ore and waste. Present production is 60 Mt/a (66 million stpy). The mine operates continuously six days a week. Primary equipment includes 55 154 t (170 st) Wabco and Unit Rig trucks and 14 P&H shovels. During 1979, a feasibility study into the application of a trolley assist system was launched. This was due to the escalation in diesel fuel costs and the appeal by the South African government to reduce the use of fossil fuels. Tests and economic evaluations proved the system technically feasible. The estimated discounted cash flow return exceeded 50%. Diesel fuel consumption would be reduced by 120 ML (31.7 million gal) in the next 10 years. The construction of 7.7 km (4.8 miles) of line and the conversion of 66 154 t (170 st) trucks were completed in March 1982. System description The conventional 154 t (170 st) diesel electric rear-dump haul-truck is equipped with two direct current wheelmotors in the rear axle. They drive the rear wheels through planetary gearboxes. A 1.2-MV (1600-hp) diesel engine and an alternator is used to power the wheelmotors. The trolley assist system consists of an overhead power line, a current collector mounted on the truck, and add-on control equipment where external electric power is routed by way of the current collector to the motorized wheels. The diesel engine is used to propel the truck on level sections. On inclines, the wheel-motors of the truck are coupled by way of a current collector to the externally generated electrical power supply for propulsion. The diesel engine, having lower output than the wheelmotors, limits the truck performance. Previously, maximum output was required from an engine on inclines. By supplying the wheelmotors from a virtually unlimited outside electric energy source, the truck performance is enhanced to the extent that speed is increased by 46% and fuel consumption reduced by 75%. System design The unique operational requirements of this mine rendered the already proven trolley pole system useless. Minimum loss in truck mobility and flexibility was required. Overhead lines and substations were required to be relatively light and portable. This enables fast repositioning of a line with no loss in material. These unique specifications set the base for the design of the Sishen system. Steel I-beams, 203 x 203 mm x 52 kg/m (8 x 8 in. x 35 lb per ft) with lengths varying from 8.3 to 11.3 m (27 to 37 ft), mounted on base plates about 4 x 2.6 m (13 x 8.6 ft) were used as masts. The masts were erected at about 50 m (165 ft) and the base plates covered with about 12 t (13 st) of iron ore to keep them absolutely stable. Results from the pilot installations indicated that using single cantilever cross arms for insulator and overhead conductor suspension was not practical. The tension in the overhead varied too much with temperature changes, causing too much sag in the lines. There had to be a positive and negative conductor. It was decided to suspend each polarity on an independent cantilever and keep the conductors under constant tension by weights acting through a two-to-one pulley tensioning arrangement. For each overhead conductor, a standard 160-mm (6.5-sq in.) grooved copper railway conductor was used. To obtain the necessary current carrying capacity, two of these conductors are used in parallel per pole. Insulators are rated at 4 kV and are of the composite type. An 11-kV three-phase line, supported by the pantograph line masts on the opposite side of the dc line, feeds the rectifier stations. The rectifier stations consist of an 11-kV to 860-V, three-phase 1.46 MVA transformer and a three-phase diode bridge rectifier. Need for lightweight building materials was created in the latter part of the nineteenth century by a radical change in building design in which dead load or structural weight was transferred from thick, heavy, load- bearing walls of former construction practice to a load-carrying framework of beams and columns with thin walls. This new design was brought about by the introduction of structural steel followed by reinforced concrete and structural concrete as materials for the erection of the load-supporting frame. The new materials and method of construction made possible the erection of skyscrapers and the building of bridges with long spans, and made feasible additions of one or more floors to existing buildings. As size and design of the load-bearing framework are controlled chiefly by dead load, the natural result was a. search for and use of light- weight materials in partitions, floors, and exterior walls. However, these thin walls created problems of heat and sound. insulation, so that building materials which possessed good heat- and sound-insulating properties in addition to light weight were objects of extensive research. One group of materials developed to fill this need comprised lightweight concretes, of which some were obtained by the use of lightweight aggregates. Although the advantages of lightweight.materials were evident from the first skyscrapers, there was a transition.stage.between the old bearing- wall and modern skeleton-frame types of building, with the heavy and massive construction of the former superimposed upon the latter. Hence, it was not until the period between 1910 and 1930 that the new lightweight concretes were recognized and used more extensively in the erection of large, nonresidential buildings. From this type of construction, light- weight-aggregate concretes entered-fields of residential and small non- residential building; in which they were found desirable for production of prefabricated, large-size; masonry units. Although the weight of each unit was reduced sufficiently to enable one man to handle it easily, properties of the new concretes other than light weight were the principal factors in the ready acceptance of these new materials in residential building. Manufacture of precast units includes complete lines of masonry and back-up blocks, bricks; floor beams, columns and partition, roof, and floor tiles and slabs. Recent improvements in casting machinery, development of the vibration-pressure machine, and a more thorough study and knowledge of the requirements and properties of the concrete mix have all contributed materially to the rapid expansion in use of lightweight aggregates in this industry.

There are at least a dozen methods of selectively removing cerium from a mixture of the rare earth elements (REE) including separation techniques based on the oxidation of cerium to the quadrivalent state. Several of the oxidation processes have been operated on a commercial scale, others have been tested and in some cases are part of proposed flowsheets. In this paper, we describe and compare the various methods. We also present preliminary estimates of the costs of early Ce removal and discuss recovery and purity aspects of the options.

Cooperation between the United States Bureau of Mines and the Safety in Mines Research Board of Great Britain, continuous, since 1924, s made possible this and other papers on safety subjects. Grateful acknowledgment is made to representatives of the board for their assistance in arranging visits to several mine-safety stations, and to F. R. Wynne, Deputy Chief Inspector of Mines, for arranging visits to mines in Great Britain and certain other countries in Europe. During the summer of 1927 the writer had the privilege of visiting the mine-safety testing stations An Great Britain, Belgium, Germany, and France, in the order named. All of these countries have large coal mines, many of which are rated as gassy. Therefore, a the installation of electrical equipment is contemplated each of these countries is confronted with the same safety problem as is the United States that is, the development of electrical equipment that will not, ignite gassy atmospheres should they through neglect or accident surround the equipment. The means employed by these countries in safeguarding gassy mines should therefore be of general interest to safety engineers of American coal mines, and a brief survey is given for each of the four countries mentioned. The fourth or last of these surveys covers conditions in France.

Ferris Sainsbury: In order to drill a 12-111. hole down to 1200 ft, In most places you would have to employ a rotary tricone bit With a down-the-hole hammer, I expect by that depth significant Inflows of water would be experienced Even with foams, we would not be able to get the water out of a hole of that diameter So the down-the-hole tricone method of drilling would be best. To keep it straight, we would probably employ the largest square drill stem compatible with the diameter of the hole. Ron Haxby: Is it common in drilling contracts to put in a vertical hole clause? Ferris Sainsbury: You can put in the vertical hole clause Ron Haxby: Does it cost more? Ferris Sainsbury: Normally, if the hole deviates, the driller can correct it with deflection wedges and will charge it back to you at cost, plus 10% or somewhere along that range Any drill hole has a tendency to go perpendicular to the dip, and there are times when stabilization systems are not successful in preventing the hole from turning into the dip of the formation. The only solution, in this situation, is to go in with an oriented wedge and kick the hole back out.

In many construction projects and in most quarrying operations drilling and blasting remains the only feasible method of loosening rock in the removal of rock or overburden, the development of the quarry and in the production process of crushed stone. Often, a blasting plan is required for the project or the quarry’s permit with primary concerns over safety and site security, and compliance with environmental regulations or standards. From this plan, a blasting program has to be developed considering the varying requirements of production, the advance of the mineral extraction and the environmental impact. The actual blast design requires a planning and optimization process. This optimization process is driven by the blasting technicians/engineers, project or mine management and often by community concerns. The blast design process comprises the selection of blast parameters, including the explosives, and the actual layout of the blast. Design tools and controls range from conventional methods based on established blasting practices to advanced design tools or computer models. Blast monitoring and evaluation can also range from empirical to advanced blast assessment. The data and information from each blast or a series of blasts can further be used in the optimization process. Its success depends upon recording the data, the timely transformation of the data to relevant information, and the development of process oriented knowledge. The elements of the blast design process are summarized and described with examples of state-of-the art engineering controls. The reporting and monitoring of individual blasts is discussed with respect to data management and information systems. A conceptual overview of the components and interfaces of a blasting program is given and discussed on the background of technical, management and community concerns.

SINCE oil journals commenced to feature the progress of Iraq pipe-line developments and since newspapers undertook to follow the discussions between a certain large oil company and an Asiatic nation, I have repeatedly been asked questions that are only answerable by setting forth the essential geographic and historical facts of concessions in that part of the world. In so doing effort will be made to correct erroneous statements made in various quarters: and mistakes herein are being kept as low in number as possible. Perhaps the best-known concession in the Middle East is the one of the Iraq Petroleum Co., covering the greater part of the portion of the kingdom of that name- lying east of the Tigris River. West of the stream is the concession of the British Oil Development Co., which takes in all presumed petroliferous areas in western Iraq. No other important oil concessions exist in that country, except for the lands of the Khanikin Oil Co., which operates in "Transferred Territories" on the border of Persia. East of and continuous with the Iraq fields are those of Persia where the Anglo-Persian Oil Co. holds the well-known D&apos;Arcy concession comprising three-quarters of the country, omitting the five northern provinces. This is the only valid existing concession in Persia, so far as known, except certain old firmans that permit development at Semnan in central Persia and possibly also certain regional grants to a French banking syndicate in eastern Mazanderan Province.

Bedded structure is the characteristics of coal measures strata. Bedding planes, coal streaks and soft rock bands existing in roof strata destroyed its continuity in the direction perpendicular to the coal seams. The statistics from a large number of long wall faces in which serious roof fall accidents occurred in Datong coal mining area suggest that beddings planes, coal streaks, soft rock bands, especially the first layer thickness of immediate roof have a great influence on its stability. As the first layer thickness increases, the probability of serious roof fall accidents decreases. Based on the investigations finite element method is used to analyze stress and displacement in the first layer of immediate roof. The results indicate that the thicker the first layer is, the less the roof convergence in the unsupported area is. Stress and strain features in stratified immediate roof are quite different f7om those in non- bedded immediate roof. In stratified immediate roof, every stratum has each own tensile zone in the upper portion and compressive zone in the lower portion, while tensile zone in the first layer is less, the tensile stress is the greatest.

A perda de temperatura das barras de aço no intervalo entre a saída do forno e a entrada do laminador é fator determinante no processo de laminação e na qualidade do tubo produzido. O estudo feito tem como objetivo modelar matematicamente o resfriamento destas barras durante o transporte entre o forno e o laminador, permitindo avaliar a temperatura mínima necessária para desenfornamento e também o máximo tempo de transporte sem comprometer o processo de laminação, possibilitando um melhor setup dos equipamentos reduzindo os custos de produção. Os resultados obtidos com o modelo matemático de resfriamento foram comparados com valores reais de temperatura coletados através de campanhas de medições com termopares instalados em uma barra e com medições de pirômetro. Valores de temperatura foram coletados com termopares em barras de 270, 230 e 180 mm de diâmetro. As medições com pirômetros foram feitas em barras de 180 mm de diâmetro. O modelo de resfriamento apresentou para todos os casos erro relativo às medições inferiores a 3%.
