This study assesses whether Narragansett Basin coal deposits could be developed commercially in the near future. To do this, we identify the potential market for the coal, assess the price these users would be willing to pay for Narragansett coal, and this price to the expected costs of producing Narragansett coal. The study concludes that the major market, New England utilities, could burn bituminous coal from Pennsylvania or West Virginia at a lower total cost than Narragansett Basin coal, assuming expected mining conditions and emission policies. Therefore, the study concludes that Narragansett Basin coal resources could not be developed economically in the next ten years.

Iron, copper and aluminum; zinc, lead and nickel, often alloyed with each other or with some of a dozen minor metals, make the materials without which the modern world could not run. Science, pure and applied, is doing marvels in finding new mixtures, new alloys to meet new needs; in developing new means of rolling, fabricating, casting and welding metals cheaply-and effectively. These and related matters were the subject of 100 papers presented at 33 seperate sessions of the organizations that participated in the congress.

Blasor is a new mine planning tool which is being used in the long and medium-term optimization of multi-open-pit operations throughout BHP Billiton’s Base Metals and bulk commodities portfolio. It is not just a scheduler, nor even only a schedule optimizer—although this function lies at the heart of the tool’s functionality—but a pit development plan optimizer, used from ultimate pit design and process plant capacity sizing right through to mining phase design and optimal panel scheduling. The tool uses a mixed-integer-linear-programming optimization engine to determine when material should be excavated and where it should be sent to optimize discounted operating cash flow over the life of operation. The core software design concept of Blasor is to provide a tool which is intuitive and flexible enough so that a competent mine planner can perform a pit development plan optimization without assistance from optimization specialists. To this end, a generalized graphical user interface has been implemented which allows full configuration of the optimization problem, including the definition of all inputs and constraints, specification of the material flow topology, bin and destination class definitions and full specification of the economic model encompassing prices and costs. This paper describes the capability of Blasor and outlines the design concepts underlying its design philosophy.

This proceedings volume contains papers presented at technology transfer seminars sponsored by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) on New Technology for Ground Control in Retreat Mining. The seminars were conducted at five locations: Uniontown, PA (March 26, 1997), Norton, VA (April 8, 1997), Pikeville, KY (April 10, 1997), Charleston, WV (April 17, 1997), and Evansville, IN (April 22, 1997). The papers presented here describe several new, highly practical technologies developed by the NIOSH Pittsburgh and Spokane Research Centers3 to improve safety during pillar retreat operations. Two central issues are addressed: pillar design and mobile roof supports (MRS's). Proper pillar sizing is essential for safe pillar extraction. The Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) program and its large data base of actual mining case histories are presented. LAMODEL, a second computer program, can be used for analysis of multiple-seam and other complex mining situations. Other papers address pillar design to avoid massive pillar collapses and the proper role of coal strength testing. MRS's have greatly improved safety where they are used for pillar line support. We studied the application of MRS's at 20 mines throughout the Eastern United States. Conclusions regarding the most effective section layouts, cut sequences, and support placements are reported. Field and laboratory tests of MRS's are also described.

O objetivo deste trabalho é estudar o efeito do recobrimento de níquel-nióbio por eletrodeposição na resistência à fadiga de um aço carbono SAE 1020. Os corpos de prova para os ensaios de fadiga foram extraídos de barras de diâmetro igual a 7,94 mm (5/16’’). Os ensaios de fadiga foram realizados por flexão rotativa com carregamento em balanço. Foi empregada uma velocidade de rotação de aproximadamente 1500rpm. Foram realizados ensaios de dureza do aço e da camada depositada de Ni-Nb. Análises microestruturais do aço e das fraturas de fadiga foram realizadas através de microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV). Os ensaios de fadiga foram realizados de forma a se obter curvas S-N (curvas de Whöler). Foram realizados três ensaios para cada carregamento. Foi observado que o recobrimento de Ni-Nb proporcionou tendência ao aumento do limite de resistência à fadiga do aço.

In a congested city or urban area, so called “lifeline of the city”, i.e. Gas, Electricity, telecommunication, as well as other utilities or facilities are supplied or transported underground through buried pipes or utility tunnel. Sometimes these buried pipes or utility tunnels are deep underground and interfere with the foundation of new structure. It is highly probable that a pile foundation is placed near an existing underground buried pipe or utilities tunnel and may influence its load bearing capacity. Hence, estimation of reduce load bearing capacity of the pile foundation placed near the existing buried conduit or utility tunnel is a complex soil-buried structure interaction problem. It is further complicated owing to uncertainty in estimation of geotechnical parameters of foundation soil due to measurement and testing errors, inherent soil variability and model transation. Under such circumstances, load bearing capacity is best assessed in probabilistic framework or through reliability analysis. The present study demonstrates how concept of response surface method (RSM) in conjunction with Numerical Analysis and First Order Second Moment (FOSM) methods can be combined to per the reliability analysis. The study answers the following question “reliability in reduction in the load bearing capacity of single pile placed near the existing underground pipe or utilities tunnel”. It is demonstrated that the approach provides first hand ination on the reduction in the load bearing capacity and then estimate the reliability of that estimation in terms of an index called Reliability Index (). Such preliminary investigation can be useful for advocating the detailed analysis as well as in the decision making for relocation of pile foundation.

Modern remote mining operations in Australia are more commonly trending towards fly-in/fly-out (FIFO) sites. This trend is driven by numerous factors including increased business centralisation, reduction in operating costs, and a desire to live in coastal cities that offer closer family networks and a greater diversity of facilities. Consequently, the resource development industry has had to adapt. When WMCÆs Mount Keith Nickel Operation commenced operations in 1994, it was developed as FIFO for its entire workforce. Since then, there have been several permutations of rosters within a 21 day compressed work cycle including the 14/7 cycle. This paper discusses a case study of the change in management process to the 9/5 work cycle focusing on minimising fatigue in the workplace. It includes the discussion of the business case, employee reaction and the practical application. The impact of the best practice change after 18 months is discussed.

Fluidized - bed roasting was investigated as a means of decomposing gypsum and gypsum mixtures to produce a gas rich in sulfur dioxide and a lime or portland cement residue . Ninety- eight percent desulfurization of gypsum in a 10 - inch fluidized- bed reactor took 1.5 hours at an operating temperature between 1,200 ° and 1,225 ° C. A cement- type residue was obtained but had to be refired at 1,450 ° C before mortar prepared from it met the physical specifications for cement .

It has been long known that many microorganisms are able to interact with mineral particles to obtain a concentrate; thus, one possible technique is flotation and its related process. Biological process have been attracting attention in mineral processing due to lower operating cost and their possible applications to process low-grade and fine ores. The adhesion of microorganism to surface of mineral particles can alter the hydrophobicity of mineral markedly. Such surface modifications modify its hydrophobicity or hydrophilicity will be used to flotation of cassiterite fines. The major difficult to float fine particles is attributed to the low probability of bubble-particle collision, one characteristic of electroflotation process is the ability to create very tiny bubbles, which is known, improve the collision efficiency and flotation performance of fine particles. In this study, the electroflotation of fine particles using Rhodococcus opacus strain as bioreagent was investigated. Electroflotation experiments were carried out using particles of cassiterite around 8µm of mean diameter the adsorption of R. Opacus onto cassiterite particles was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), electrokinetic and contact angle analyses. The measurement of bubble size by laser diffraction showed a mean bubble size of around 26 µm, current density and bacteria concentration appear to be the main parameters affecting the mean diameter of bubbles, electroflotation tests reported recovery around of 64.5 % at pH 5, concentration of 2,87 x10¹² cells/ml (50 mg/L) and current density of 51,4 mA/cm2.

It is quite common for people exposed to blast vibrations to ask questions such as "How big was that blast on the Richter Scale?" Although it is tempting to dismiss such questions out of hand, for the lay person it is understandable that something which shakes their house should have some sort of measure attached to it. Since a layman doesn't usually know about particle velocity, frequency or the other terms used in describing and regulating blast vibration, the Richter Scale is usually the only measure they can relate to.

THE production of lead in the United States for the period from 1720 to 1912 was 10,432,668 tons valued at $924,600,000. The average price during this period was 4.4c. a pound, although lead sold at times below 3 cents. We know that in the early days of lead smelting in Montana lead was deliberately lost in the slag and only enough reduced as bullion to collect the silver. This bullion was freighted by ox team to Corinne, Utah, the terminus of the railroad at that time, and shipped to Swansea or Omaha, Neb., for refining. The slag from some of the above mentioned operations contained as much as 15 per cent lead and has since been resmelted. Since 1921 the production of lead has increased each year and the price and tonnage have been as follows :

Building off the enthusiasm generated by Credit Suisse First Boston on the potential benefits of an industry-wide effort to market gold jewellery, a group of gold producers, led by Randall Oliphant, CEO of Barrick Gold, decides to investigate the long -term impact of launching a significant marketing initiative to stimulate demand for gold jewellery. The group establishes an international Steering Committee representing producers of differing sizes, members and non-members of the World Gold Council. This Committee comprises representatives from AngloGold, Barrick, Gympie Gold, Kinross, Randgold, and Sons of Gwalia and is supported by the Australian Gold Council, the Gold and Silver Institute, and CSFB. The Steering Committee hires McKinsey to assist it by conducting an independent review of whether investment in a large-scale marketing initiative for gold jewellery would be effective in increasing demand for gold, and ultimately of significant economic benefit of the gold industry. Based on McKinsey?s review* and its own discussions with key stakeholders across the industry, the Steering Committee strongly believes the case for marketing is compelling and sufficiently proven to persuade the industry to undertake a major initiative over the next few years. The objective of the work reported herein was to evaluate state-of-the-art repeaters used in wireless communications to determine their suitability for use in extending the range of portable and mobile communications in underground mine applications. The scope of the work included wireless repeaters in the frequency range from LF (500 kilohertz) up to the one giga-hertz range. These repeaters included not only single-channel repeaters, that is F1/F1 repeaters for short range simplex party line communications, but in addition, F1/F2 type repeaters currently commercially available in the HF, VHF and UHF bands.

The difficulty in material characterization and the erratic response of cemented soil layers, such as caliche in the Las Vegas valley, creates challenges for practicing engineers to reliably predict the response of deep foundations. The focus of this paper is the numerical prediction of axial response in drilled shaft foundations, which are commonly used in infrastructure projects (i.e., bridges and tall buildings) in Las Vegas, NV. The prevalence of hard caliche layers with variation in the degree of cementation add to the complication in numerical modeling. In this study, the applicability of two existing t-z models, developed for Florida limestone and soft rock, was evaluated based on numerical simulations of three bi-directional load tests conducted at caliche-dominant sites. The corresponding top-down load tests were also simulated for further assessment. A MATLAB-based finite-difference program, NVShaft, has been used to implement the mentioned t-z models in axial load analysis. Complexity originating from drilled shaft construction and the interaction with caliche during one axial load test resulted in a stiffer predicted response compared to measure data. For the other two load tests, both t-z models produced comparable load-displacement responses. It was observed that the t-z model for Florida limestone predicted relatively stiffer responses and higher drilled shaft capacity.

Os mancais de rolamento dos rolos secadores da linha de estanhamento eletrolítico da CSN são expostos a severa contaminação por água e ácido sulfúrico. O tempo médio entre falhas (MTBF) de cada rolamento da linha é de apenas 30 dias. A CSN aceitou realização de teste com um par de rolamentos autocompensadores de rolos vedados que foram montados em um rolo, com a supervisão da SKF. Os rolamentos do teste operaram por mais de 150 dias, apresentando sobrevida superior a 400% até o momento, sendo que ainda continuam em operação. Há cerca de 60 rolamentos operando simultaneamente na linha, sendo que a solução poderá ser replicada para os demais pontos, aumentando a vida em serviço dos rolamentos e reduzindo custos de manutenção.

The Bureau of Mines has conducted a survey to determine potential exposure of mine workers to dust produced in connection with intermittent rock drilling in coal mines. Eighteen mines in 3 states were visited, and 30 different operations were observed, as follows: 10 drilling in draw slate, 8 drilling top rock for brushing or grading, 2 drilling in the coal face, 4 drilling in the bottom, 2 drilling top rock for overcasts, 2 drilling in faults or boulders, 1 drilling for roof bolting, and 1 drilling for trolley hangers. Dust respirators were worn by drilling crews during 16 of the 30 operations. Three hundred thirty-two samples of air-borne dust were collected during the survey. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The information in this report is based on samples collected and observations made in bituminous-coal mines. Few important improvements other than the development of cracking processes were made in technical petroleum refining from 1914 to 1919. Refiners were concerned mainly with enlarging their plants and erecting new plants to meet the growing demand for petroleum products. Shell stills operated as a unit or arranged in series for progressive or continuous distillation were the prevailing distillation equipment. Some improvement was made in condensers, but in most refineries of the period coils of pipe immersed in tanks of water were used to condense vapors and cool liquid products of the stills. Heat exchangers to conserve heat and reduce costs were more highly developed at California topping plants than at other plants. In this connection Wadsworth3/states: It is regretted that information concerning the operation of topping plants with eastern and Middle West oils is not available. The writer carefully canvassed the Middle West, but did not find a plant where operation had progressed beyond the early experimental stages and reliable figures could be furnished.
