Reservoir properties including porosity and permeability distributions in longwall coal mine gobs have direct application to modeling the flow patterns and gas distributions in the gobs. Proper assessment of these distributions is required to assess gob gas hazards such as spontaneous combustion and explosive methane mixtures and to optimize gob gas venthole operation and nitrogen inertization. Determining the reservoir properties is difficult given that the gob is inaccessible and direct measurements cannot be easily taken. Several techniques have been used by previous researchers and will be discussed. This paper will present the methodology used to model the gob compaction by simulating the sequential extraction of coal. Two Western US coal mines were used for case studies. By determining volumetric strain, the porosity and permeability distributions in the gob can be calculated. The geo-mechanical model predicts an axisymmetric volumetric strain distribution with a steeper slope near the start-up room and a shallower slope near the active face.

Abstract In the course of coal studies undertaken by the B.C. Department of Mines in southeastern British Columbia, special attention was directed to problems of coal seam correlation. Methods that had been used successfully in other coalfields were found, in the Crowsnest area, to have a restricted use or furnished only additional evidence that might prove helpful when used in conjunction with other criteria. A correlation technique involving semi-quantitative spectrographic analyses of coal ashes was developed. Elements detected in the ash include Si, B, P, Fe, Mg, Mn, Pb, Ti, Cr, Ga, Ca, Al, Ge, Ba, Mo, V, Ag, ?y;b, Na, Zn, Zr, Ni, Sr, Cu, K. Of these, the elements found to be most useful in correlation were Na, Ba, Si, V, and Mg. The element Na was invariably detected in the ash from one of the seams but was not found in samples taken from any of the others. In all of the four seams sampled statistically, significant differences in the amount of certain trace elements were noted. When the values obtained for these trace elements were portrayed in the form of histograms, the resulting diagrams had a characteristic shape for each seam. The diagrams provided a basis for seam identification within the limited area (8,000 feet by 4,000 feet) that was investigated. Introduction During the field seasons of 1946, 1947, and 1948 the British Columbia Department of Mines undertook a geological investigation of the coal measures of southeastern B.C. As field work progressed in the Crowsnest area it was found that, within the Kootenay formation, which contains all the commercial seams of the region, the coal beds are the most persistent stratigraphic units. Because of relatively rapid changes in ?both the thickness of the seams and the interval between seams, difficulty has invariably been experienced in attempts at correlation. Even short-range correlati0ns by able geologists who have worked in the Crowsnest coal basin have been questioned by the operating companies. It was apparent, therefore, that a more dependable correlation technique was needed so that stratigraphic and structural studies could be of greatest value. This paper presents, firstly, a summary of the results obtained in attempted correlations using methods that have been found effective in other coalfields. Secondly, a method based on semi-quantitative spectrographic analysis of coal ash is described and the apparently promising results are discussed.

Naica consists of at least 10 mantos and 40 chimneys that have produced over 15 million tens of ore with 10% Zn, 13% Pb and 13 oz/ton Ag. The ore occurs in thick-bedded, folded Cretaceous limestone. Fractures and 26 Ma old felsite dikes with an initial strontium isotopic ratio of 0.708 localize the mineralization. The mantos follow the dikes and have abundant early skarn with manganohedenbergite, calcic garnet, idocrase, quartz, calcite, wollastonite, schellite and later sulfides. The chimneys arise from the mantos and change from silicate-rich to silicate-free sulfide limestone replacements. Carbon, oxygen and sulfur isotope data on carbonates, silicates, sulfides and sulfates are compatible with a single evolving (magmatic?) fluid.

"INTRODUCTION This paper is one of many reporting on various aspects of the Bureau of Mines program during World War II directed toward alleviation of shortages in certain critical minerals some of these papers are published as technical papers information circulars, and reports of investigations, of the Bureau of Mines or in technical journals.The investigation described in this report was begun as part of the Bureau, of Mines program to develop acid processes for the extraction of alumina from low-grade bauxites and clays. A domestic shortage of high-grade bauxite suitable for treatment by the Bayer process became acute as a result of World War II; and intensive search for a practical acid process using lower-grade alumina-bearing raw materials was therefore warranted.A survey of the various methods for extraction of alumina from clay has been presented in an early Bureau of Mines publication. 4/ The principal barrier to the successful operation of an acid process has been the difficulty experienced in developing a suitable commercial method for purifying the crude aluminum salts after the clay extraction is complete. Iron salts are the foremost contamination influence. A review of the more prominent procedures that have been proposed for separating iron and aluminum salts can be found in the well-known text on aluminum by Edwards, Frary, and Jeffries. 5/The majority of acid processes to extract alumina from clay employ sulfuric acid as the leaching agent, and the purification is thus reduced to the separation of iron and aluminum, sulfates."

Estes refratários apresentam alto grau de desenvolvimento tecnológico, demandam tempo para sua substituição em intervalos de poucas corridas e apresentam custo relativamente alto. No presente trabalho foi realizada a caracterização técnica e microestrutural de placas de refratários aluminosos com carbono, de diferentes fornecedores. As propriedades técnicas desses materiais foram relacionadas com o desempenho em serviço. Inclui-se nesse estudo a comparação do refratário novo com o usado (post mortem), relacionando-se os aspectos estruturais com o desgaste do canal da placa. Os resultados mostraram diferenças significativas dos constituintes microestruturais das placas, os quais explicam o melhor desempenho de um material na prática industrial.

The Bureau of Mines, in its effort to promote greater utilization of domestically abundant materials, conducted reasearch on an alternate mold material that has commercial potential for titanium investment casting. Using variations of the conventional lost wax molding process, investment shell molds were formed entirely of fused, calcia-stabilized Zr02 and a Zr02-forming binder. Optimization of binder/slurry properties', stucco grain size and dis¬tribution, and curing practices resulted in a structurally sound investment shell that was distortion free and thermally stable. Small titanium castings, weighing up to 10 pounds, were prepared in unheated molds by both static and centrifugal casting techniques. Microstruc¬tural examination of the castings revealed that mold fill and surface quality were enhanced by centrifugal casting, although good results also were obtained from the statically poured molds. Microstructural and electron microprobe examinations showed that excessive, brittle case formation could be avoided by curing the dried shell molds in air for at least 2 hours at 1,400° C. Increasing curing temperature and time above these levels yielded added bene¬fits. Molds fired in vacuum at 1,500° C for 4 hours yielded castings essen¬tially free of case formation. The tensile properties of as-cast test specimens (no surface conditioning performed) id the chemical composition of representative metal samples showed that castings produced were comparable to Grades C-1 and C-2 unalloyed titanium This indicated that no sifnificant degradation of metal properties resulted from mold/metal interaction.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines and Western Fuels Utah, Inc. entered into an agreement to plan, install, and evaluate a micro-computer based monitoring and control system at Deserado Mine, an underground coal mine. The U.S. Bureau of Hines contracted the Colorado School of Mines (CSN) to independently evaluate the project. CSM evaluated and documented costs, benefits, problems, and management and labor perceptions in this report. Recommendations are provided for mine operators and monitoring system vendors considering future installations.

In a Nation-wide appraisal of coking-coal reserves and of the practicability of upgrading marginal deposits to metallurgical standards, this study of the preparation characteristics of the coals in Cambria County, Pa. , was undertaken. Over 90 percent of the coal remaining in Cambria Comity is found in the Upper Freeport, Lower Freeport, Upper Kittanning, and Lower Kittanning beds. The Middle Kittanning bed, although mined on a commercial scale in the past, is not an important bed now, as most of the remaining reserves are too thin to be mined over wide areas. For many years, Cambria County has been an important source of coal for industrial and metallurgical purposes. The) principal production comes from the Lower Kittanning bed, which accounts for almost .60 percent of the Cambria County coal output. Table 1 shows the county's coal production, by beds, during 1948.

Bendigo Mining Limited has established a modern underground gold mine and processing plant at Bendigo in central Victoria. The Bendigo goldfield produced around 22 000 000 oz of gold between 1851 and 1954. Approximately 4 000 000 oz were sourced from surface alluvial workings with the remaining 18 000 000 oz won from underground quartz reefs. The modern mine is accessed via the Swan Decline, which commences at the Kangaroo Flat site on the southern outskirts of Bendigo and progresses in a north easterly direction between the Deborah and Sheepshead anticlines, reaching a depth of almost 1000 m below the City of Bendigo. Development of this decline commenced in 1998. Since that time 20 km of underground development has been completed. Exploration drilling, on-reef development and bulk sampling carried out between 1999 and 2005 resulted in the estimation of a Probable Ore Reserve of 700 000 tonnes at 9.0 g/t gold for 207 000 oz of gold. These Ore Reserves were contained within four reefs located on the Deborah and Sheepshead anticlines. Reef mining commenced in late 2005 from the Shywolup and Greater Garrard reefs. Material mined was stockpiled on the surface in preparation for commissioning of the process plant which commenced in mid 2006. Mining and processing were carried out between August 2006 and May 2007 during which time 176 000 tonnes were processed at an average grade of 5.4 g/t gold to produce 26 735 oz of gold. Plant feed was sourced from four reefs. This paper discusses some of the issues which were encountered with the definition and mining of these geologically variable and nuggetty reefs. This paper covers exploration techniques, grade estimation, mine geological control, mining methods, geotechnical issues and reconciliations. It will also discuss some of the lessons learnt and how these will be applied to future Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimation, as well as underground operations.

"The recovery of oxide Cu minerals by flotation is a longstanding challenge in the minerals industry, especially for high acid-consuming ores which would not be economical for direct acid leaching. Sulfidization (often using controlled potential sulfidization or CPS) using NaSH (or Na2S) followed by flotation using traditional sulfide collectors is the widely used technique. CPS has certain limitations: a) inability to recover certain oxide Cu minerals because they are refractory to sulfidization, b) high consumption of NaSH (or Na2S), and c) potential health and safety hazards associated with NaSH (and Na2S). Flotation of oxide copper minerals using alkyl hydroxamate (AHX) collector has been studied extensively. Investigations using single minerals and laboratory ore flotation have been conducted in the past to demonstrate the efficacy of alkyl hydroxamates. The technology has been used intermittently in plants. One of the main challenges in plant use has been quantifying the true potential for alkyl hydroxamates for recovery of various oxide Cu species in complex and variable ore systems and identifying the most suitable conditions for optimal use. Quantitative mineralogical analysis using QEMSCAN was used in this study to characterize flotation products lab flotation samples. Analysis of concentrates and tails from hydroxamate flotation and CPS flotation stages demonstrated that certain oxide Cu minerals respond exclusively to alkyl hydroxamates and not to CPS. The hierarchy of interaction of AHX with the various oxide Cu minerals could be inferred from these studies. Finally, these studies also allowed quantification of a group of minerals species, which (erroneously) report as part of the Acid-Soluble Cu [ASCu] but cannot be recovered by flotation, thereby facilitating an estimation of the true recovery potential for alkyl hydroxamate.INTRODUCTIONCopper that is economically recoverable occurs in three major types of ores, which are defined by the modal mineralogy of Cu. For sulfide ores, Cu occurs as sulfide minerals and is satisfactorily recovered by flotation using sulfide collectors. Non-sulfide ores, which contain Cu in the form of oxides, phosphates, carbonates and silicates, described in the industry as “oxide” ores (or ores containing “acid-soluble” Cu or ASCu), are currently treated using hydrometallurgy, which involves leaching with dilute sulfuric acid followed by solvent extraction and electrowinning, unless the ores contain acid consuming gangue minerals such as dolomite. For mixed sulfide-oxide ores (i.e. containing both sulfide and oxide Cu minerals) that do not contain acid consuming gangue minerals, Cu values are easily recovered by flotation of sulfide Cu minerals followed by leaching of oxides (only when a leach plant is available). However, when the ore contains acid consuming gangue minerals flotation is required to recover both sulfide and oxide Cu minerals."

In 1986, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied part of the 24,600-acre Orejana Canyon Wilderness Study Area (OR-001-078), in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area, located in Harney County, 76 mi northeast of Lakeview, OR, is underlain by Miocene basalt, rhyolite flows, tuffs, and tuffaceous sedimentary rocks. No mines, prospects, or claims were found within the study area. According to the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the tuffaceous rocks have a moderate favorability for the occurrence of diatomite and a low favorability for zeolite resources. Also, the rhyolite flows have a low favorability for the occurrence of perlite resources. However, U.S. Bureau of Mines' studies indicate that no metallic or nonmetallic resources are present in the study area.

SOME 20 years ago, upon finishing second year at the University of Manitoba, I was faced with the choice of whether I wanted to be a geologist or a chemist. Accordingly, I sought out Professor Brownell, Head of the Department of Geology, to ask him what a geologist did. His reply contained the statement that following graduation one went out into the field in northern Canada for 5 to 15 years to reduce to practice what had been learned at university. To a young man, very socially conscious, even one year, let alone 5 to 10, in a small mining community sounded like being banished to a monastery in the Himalayas and thus I turned to chemistry. Moving to the present, last month I asked a geologist, and then a mining engineer, what does the fresh graduate in their field do these days? The reply was: usually serve an apprenticeship for an indeterminate period either underground or in the field learning the job.

"Abstract -Mineral deposits and prospects of the Pan African Saldanian orogenic belt in the south­ western Cape Province South Africa, are reviewed. Despite the entire absence of operating base or precious metal mines in the area, this study has established at !east four metal associations that offer enticing exploration potential .The poly-phase deformed, low-grade metamorphosed volcano-sedimentary Malmesbury Group constitutes a complex, poorly understood supracrustal sequence that has been loosely subdivided into the Tygerberg, Swartland and Boland tectono-stratigraphic terranes by northwesterly trending fault zones. Syn- and post-tectonic granitoids of the Cape Granite Suite selectively intruded these terranes. Early S-types preferred the Tygerberg terrane whereas the later I-types dominate the remaining areas. Anorogenic A-type granites, however, occur in all three domains. Known metallization is directly or indirectly related to the intrusives, yet syngenetic deposits are conspicuously absent from the supracrustals. Four metal associations have been identified.•,Cassiterite-wolfrarnite (± Au, Cu, Mo, Fe-sultides) in quartz and quartz/aplite veins hosted by tourmalinized and locally greissenized S-type granite. Similar exo-granitic veins occur in proximal metamorphites.•,Juxtaposed disseminated, stockwork, breccia and vein style Cu-Mo-Fe-(Au)-sultide mineralization hosted by matie to intermediate intrusives of high K calc-alkaline, 1-type affinity.•,Cu-Mo-Au-sultides hosted by hydraulic breccia pipes, stocks and veins occurring in anorogenic A-type alkali feldspar granites and amphibole quartz syenites.•,Scheelite with minor Cu-Mo-sulfides and Au-associated with endo- and exo-skarns spatially related to I-type monzogranite, granite and alkali feldspar granite .The first three associations occur along the Yzerfontein-Helderberg-Zone, a 180 km lineament in the Tygerberg terrane, a zone exploited by syn-, late- and post-tectonic intrusives and their related mineralization. The fourth association is typical of the Boland terrane. The spatial and temporal relationships between the various metal associations is interpreted as the result of sequential intrusion of relative early high level S-type, followed by intermediate level I-type and finally anorogenic A-type granitoids during the evolution of a contracting continental margin arc and its inner arc. This plate tectonic setting suggests subduction in an easterly direction underneath the Kalahari craton. The spatial configuration of the various terranes at the present erosional levels is the result of rifting and significant differential vertical displacement following cessation of subduction, a terminal tectonic event possibly synchronous with intrusion of the A-type granitoids.Near surface preserved roof zones and cupolas of both S- and I-type granitoids in the Tygerberg and Boland terranes, respectively, render these areas extremely prospective for Sn, W, Mo and Au mineralization. The presence of intermediate to mafic volcanics, a diversity of calcareous lithotypes and favorable plate tectonic setting of the Malmesbury Group suggest potential for the thus far elusive VMS, MVT and Sedex base metal and minor precious metal deposits."

In this paper, two types of low-grade complex zinc oxide ores (sandstone and limestone ores) from Yunnan province, China were investigated. A large number of argillaceous and alkaline gangue makes it infeasible to treat the ores with heap leaching. Although wet metallurgy can be considered, the lower efficiency of liquid-solid separation, the high cost, and low revenue limit this technology to be put into practice in large-scale. In order to solve this problem, a new technology combining mineral processing method with metallurgy technique is studied to process this refractory ore that consists of sandstone ore with 5.84 per centZn and limestone ore with 6.50 per centZn. The results of the tests showed that zinc can effectively be recovered from two types of the ores by using the new technology, and the acid consumption can be remarkably reduced. For sandstone sample, 82.96 per cent Zn was recovered by flotation and final Zn recovery by flotation+ hydro-metallurgy can be up to 78.17 per cent from the ore. In addition, for sandstone, acid consumption can be reduced from 270kg/t by direct acid, leaching to 76.92kg/t by flotation + hydrometallurgy combination. For limestone sample, 85.90 per centZn was recovered by flotation and totally 80.95 per cent Zn can be recovered by new technology which is a combination of mineral processing and metallurgy. Besides, H2SO4 consumption can be reduced from 450kg/t for sandstone originally to113.79kg/t after using new technology. One merit of this new process technology is that the zinc sulfides and oxides can be recovered without desliming in the flotation cells at the different stage and make sure the concentrate products as a good feed for hydrometallurgical technology. This study provided pretty good technical support for tapping low-grade refractory zinc oxide ores. Many mine accidents will affect the mine ventilation system when they occur. At present, there is a lack of monitoring means to capture the occurrence of accidents in time by monitoring the ventilation system, so as to take emergency measures to reduce the loss of personnel and property. Pressure wave is an elastic wave existing in air. Most accidents in mine will cause obvious changes of pressure wave. It is an innovative idea to monitor the occurrence of accidents in mine by measuring pressure wave. The development and functions of the pressure monitoring device and related software are introduced in detail. The pressure wave monitoring test is carried out in San Xavier underground mining laboratory, and the D-wave and S-wave waveform data are collected. The waveform characteristics are analysed, and the main frequency distribution of the pressure wave is found to be within 1 Hz by using FFT. At the same time, the influence of the propagation distance of the pressure wave on the waveform is analysed. The propagation velocity of D-wave and S-wave are roughly calculated, and they are 279.6 m/s and 397.3 m/s respectively. S-wave is slightly faster than D-wave. Although there are errors and uncertainties in the test, the test verified the feasibility of the existence and collection of pressure waves in the ventilation roadway, and provides a method for the future study of the propagation of pressure waves in the mine ventilation system.

FOR more than 2500 years, natural gas issues in the Surakhany district of the Apsheron peninsula were the object of pilgrimages by fire worshippers and Hindoos from Burma and India. Even as late as 1890, Hindoo priests conducted ceremonies in a temple at Surakhany, which probably replaced a more ancient one; but later, the visits of the pilgrims were prohibited in order to check the spread of Asiatic diseases in that region. For centuries, limited supplies of oil have been abstracted from shallow excavations in the Caspian oil belt and dispatched into the interior of Asia and elsewhere for medicinal and industrial purposes. Statistics show a yield of 37,400 bbl. in 1863, but only since 1869 has there been serious development; in that year the yield was 203,000 bbl. At that time, hand digging was supplanted by drilling, and the enormous wells that resulted from tapping sources hitherto beyond the reach of operators completely demoralized the industry for a time, owing to inadequate outlets for the products. The early activities in this area were greatly hindered by annoying taxation, monopolies, imperial land grants, etc., but when these were revoked or adjusted, in 1877, the industry sprang into prominence and, between 1898 and 1901, the Baku fields produced practically one-half of the world's supply of oil. Within a few miles of Baku lie the two richest oil fields in the world; viz., the Balakhany-Saboontchy-Romany and the Bibi-Eibat, the latter constituting almost a suburb of the city. For many years the gasoline obtained in the refineries of the Baku area was burned in pits, being considered an undesirable product, and until 1870 the residue also was destroyed, its value as a fuel not being recognized. Kerosene was the main product sought by the refiners. It was shipped across the Caspian Sea and up the Volga to the industrial centers of Russia. During the period 1979 thru 1982, Multi Mineral Corporation conducted a mining I research program at the United States Department of the Interior's Bureau of Mines Oil Shale Mining Environmental Research Facility in the Central Piceance Creek Basin, Rio Blanco County, Colorado. The program consisted of mining, environmental and geotechnical research data and, the results are described in this report.

"After industrial sand has been mined and processed, the finished product is typically loaded into small bags of 45 kg (100 lb) or less, large bulk bags of 454 to 1,361 kg (1,000 to 3,000 lb), or vehicles such as trucks or trains for transport to end users. As the sand is being transferred and loaded, dust can be released into the work environment, potentially exposing workers to respirable crystalline silica. A number of control technologies have been developed and utilized in an effort to reduce dust liberation during loading operations. For bulk loading into trucks or trains, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) evaluated one of these technologies, the Dust Suppression Hopper (DSH), at two industrial sand processing plants. Results from these case studies show that the DSH reduced airborne respirable dust levels by 39 to 88 percent, depending upon the product size being loaded.IntroductionInhalation of respirable crystalline silica dust can lead to the development of silicosis, a disabling and potentially fatal lung disease. Once contracted, there is no cure for silicosis, so the goal is to prevent the development of the disease by limiting exposure to respirable dust containing crystalline silica at or below the exposure limit of 50 µg/ m3 recommended by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH, 2002). At industrial silica sand operations, the product contains high levels of crystalline silica, so effective control technologies are needed to minimize the respirable dust exposure of workers.NIOSH, in partnership with the Industrial Minerals Association–North America, published a dust control handbook (NIOSH, 2012) focused upon control technologies for industrial- mineral mining and processing operations. One chapter in this handbook discussed technologies for controlling dust liberated during bulk loading, including telescoping loading spouts, dust collection systems for loading spouts, enclosures for load-out areas and a newer technology known as Dust Suppression Hopper (DSH)."

"The froth flotation process was patented by E.L. Sulman, H.F.K. Pickard, and John Ballot in 1906 . . . . . . . . . .James M. Hyde installed the first froth flotation process in the U.S., about August 1, 1911, at the Basin Reduction Co. plant, Basin, Montana . . . . . . . . . .By 1914, 42 mining companies were operating or experimenting with the flotation process . . . . . . . . . .The period 1930 to 1960 saw the application of flotation spread to nonsulphide ores and become the key factor in the economic production of many industrial minerals". So states FROTH FLOTATION, 50th Anniversary Volume, published by AIME in 1962. It is interesting, to observe that the Mines Branch, now part of the Canadian Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, was established in 1907 through an act of Parliament entitled, "The Nines and Geology Act". In 1911, a mineral dressing group was formed and a laboratory was constructed. By 1921, an engineer was devoting full time to industrial mineral processing problems.

The Crown Building, built circa 1921, is a 26-story iconic building located at West 57th Street and Fifth Avenue in the heart of Manhattan. The paper highlights collaboration between the geotechnical engineer and foundation contractor to develop economical and practical solutions to foundation design and construction challenges associated with this complex redevelopment project. The project includes both below-grade and above-grade expansion of the occupied building, and required undermining the existing foundations, and essentially doubling the foundation loads. The below-grade expansion required surgical foundation work including drilling minicaissons, shoring columns, underpinning, and excavating 20 feet of rock.
