Homestake Mining Co. set out to complete final reclamation at a former open-pit gold mine in west central Nevada. The goal was to exceed regulatory standards by satisfying the company's own high corporate standards for successful reclamation. Homestake's completion requirements challenged available technology due to the unsuitability of heap material as a growth medium, the harsh environmental conditions of the site and the region's lack of native growth medium. Accomplishing these goals required enlisting a multidisciplinary project team to develop, test and implement appropriate and cost-effective revegetation alternatives.

A study has been undertaken on two 1.12 m diameter industrial booster fans operating under different blade settings powered by a 1200 rpm motor at the Missouri University of Science and Technology. The fans total pressure varies up to 1kPa forcingup to 25 m3/s through the workings. A pressure-quantity survey has been conducted inby and outby the booster fans with different blade settings. The study uses a variable speed drive (VFD) to determine the effect of rotational frequency on the system. The pressure drop across the bulkheads has been monitored during the experiments. The fans were operated with various blade settings to determine the optimal scenario that maintains the maximum airflow quantity and the lowest power demand at a particular ventilation station. Five scenarios were conducted with different blade setting and mostly with two different speeds. The experimental results show that alteration of fans? speeds by use of a VFD unit can reduce power consumption while maintaining airflow requirements. With the flow rate forced through the mine by the surface fan the blade settings 4 and 5 were determined as possible alternative for the mine ventilation system. In scenario 4, the airflow at the particular ventilation station for a number of speeds is over 20m3/s. The power consumption at 1080 rpm was measured to be 20.1 kW compared to 25.5 kW at 1200 rpm. The operating cost would be significantly less at lower speeds. Scenario 5 is the alternative making use of both booster fans and the main fan in series that meets the minimum airflow requirement at the particular ventilation station along with minimum power consumption. Reducing both booster fans speeds to 1054 rpm results in power consumption of both together dropping to 11.8 kW. Therefore blade setting 5 using two booster fans was determined to be the optimal setting. Separately it was determined that the combination with use of only one booster fan, the West booster fan, running in series with the main fan is the overall optimal scenario. The power consumption of the West booster fan was calculated to be 8.8 kW at 860 rpm with the minimum airflow requirement being met. Computational fluid dynamics is used for analyzing three dimensional flow structures in time domain and calculating the corresponding unsteady pressure fluctuations. The sliding and dynamic mesh techniques were used to study the unsteady flow interaction arising due to the rotation of the fan blades. The numerical predictions of the variables in the form of velocity vectors and contour plots detailing the flow characteristics are then analyzed according to the known physical situation and existing experimental data.

In 1933, R. paris1 published a phase diagram for the entire Mg-Ca-Zn system. He reported the existence of a ternary intermetallic phase, Mg5Zn5Ca2, which formed a quasi-binary with the magnesium solid solution. Since then, no extensive work has been reported on the system. Recently however, indications of the existence of a second ternary in-termetallic phase in equilibrium with the magnesium solid solution led to a reinvestigation of the solid phase equilibria involving the magnesium solid solution. The 335°C (635°F) isothermal section was chosen for study. Metallography and powder X-ray diffraction were selected as the best mutually corroborating methods for determining the solid phase constitution. Seventy-six alloys were prepared from singly sublimed (99.95 pct) magnesium, electrolytic (99.95 pct) zinc and USP calcium. The analyses of some of the alloys are shown in Fig. 1. The alloys were melted in a graphite crucible under a chloride flu and chill cast in a split graphite mold. Dif-fusion couples (see Fig. 2) were prepared by casting molten Mg-20 wt pct Zn alloy around a cylinder of Mg-30 wt pct Ca alloy. The alloy samples and the diffusion couples were sealed under argon in Pyrex vials and annealed in a furnace capable of controlling within 1/2°C of 335°C. At the conclusion of the anneal, the alloy samples were quenched in ice water and the diffusion couples were air cooled. Procedures standard for magnesium alloys were used for metallographic examination. Powder X-ray diffraction patterns were taken on a G. A Automação Industrial utiliza de forma intensiva os mesmos equipamentos e softwares de TI como servidores, historiadores, switches, firewall, dentre outros. No entanto, são poucas as áreas de automação que aplicam de forma eficaz todos os controles e cuidados que esses ativos requerem. Neste cenário, a garantia de altos níveis de disponibilidade dos sistemas de automação inicia-se pelo ambiente físico no qual tais sistemas estão instalados. É comum a improvisação de ambientes inadequados dentro das áreas industriais ou a instalação em subestações elétricas que não foram construídas com o rigor necessário para receber os ativos de TI Industrial utilizados nos sistemas automação. A solução para manter elevados os índices de disponibilidade destes ativos é, sem dúvida, instalá-los em Data Centers, comumente utilizados nas áreas de TI, o que é facilmente justificável pelo fato de que a indisponibilidade dos ativos de automação representa um impacto maior aos resultados das indústrias ao se comparar com a indisponibilidade dos ativos de “TI Corporativa”. Assim, este trabalho conceitua um ambiente de Data Center, discute as particularidades relacionadas à Automação Industrial (projetos de cabeamento estruturado e as interligações entre os níveis 1 e 2 de Automação) e apresenta as estratégias que a Samarco Mineração está adotando com relação ao tema.

This paper expands on the ZECA (Zero Emission Coal Alliance) technology, which is aimed at making coal a sustainable source of clean energy in the near future. The technology proposed immediate capture of carbon dioxide and other pollutants upon generation, thus alleviating their negative effects in the Earth’s atmosphere. ZECA proposes using chemical energy of coal to produce hydrogen; the latter is then used to produce electricity via fuel cells or Hyrogen-Oxygen turbines. In this study, a chemical engineering package, AspenPlus 12.1, is used to simulate the reactor (reformer) in which hydrogen is produced from methane water and lime as part of the zero emission power plant. Thermodynamic conditions, pressure and temperature, are optimized with respect to molar hydrogen production. Under the proposed conditions, molar conversion efficiency, carbon to hydrogen, of 95% is achieved. Further studies are required to model the complete power plant and to optimize it for efficiency.

In recent years observational techniques of tunneling have become increasingly popular methods to facilitate complex underground infrastructure projects. The traditional design and construction management practices developed in Europe have been adapted for application in North America to suit a more restrictive management and legal culture. This paper will discuss three recent projects, the San Diego Mission Valley East Extension, Washington Dulles International Airport People Mover, and the Seattle Beacon Hill Station and Tunnels, with the objective of identifying the challenges of applying observational tunneling methods to established contractual practices in North America.

During 1981, Ecuador's gross domestic product (GDP) increased by a reported 4.8% in real terms, a slight improvement over that of 1980. In current prices, the CDP in 1981 was estimated at $13.7 billion.2 The inflation rate increased to 15.6% according to official figures, above that of 1980. Ecuador's production of petroleum increased 3% in 1981 compared with that of 1980. The consortium of Corporación Estat al Petrolera Ecuatoriana (CEPE), the state oil company, and Texaco, Inc., produced almost 98% of the total from their Putumayo Basin operations in Oriente, the eastern jungle region. In sharp contrast, output from the Santa Elena Peninsula Fields, where oil was first produced commercially in 1921, continued to decline, producing only 510,000 barrels, a decrease of almost 8% compared with that of 1980.

Hoje em dia, a necessidade de utilizar materiais ecologicamente corretos tem aumentando em paralelo com a constante busca de novas tecnologias para produzir materiais renováveis, economicamente viáveis e tecnologicamente avançados, o que justifica esse trabalho. O presente trabalho consiste em estudar o comportamento mecânico de compósitos de matriz poliéster reforçados com fibras de cânhamo e testadas com impacto Izod. Para a realização deste teste, foram feitas amostras com dimensões de 10 mm de largura, 63 mm de comprimento e 12,7 mm de espessura em diferentes frações volumétricas de fibra, 0%, 10%, 20% e 30%. As amostras foram testadas em um conjunto pendular PANTEC na configuração Izod, modelo XC-50 localizado no LAMAV/UENF. A energia de impacto Izod dos compósitos de poliéster de 30% de fibras de cânhamo foi de 169,4 J/m.

Cemented paste backfill (CPB) is an innovative tailings management method that consists in returning considerable amounts of mine tailings into the underground mine openings. The filled stopes thus participate to the ground support that allows maximizing orebody extraction and a safer environment for the mine workers. There are also significant environmental advantages of using CPB. Indeed, up to 50% of the concentrator tailings can be backfilled, leading to a smaller volume of problematic waste materials to be managed at the surface. Once the CPB is placed, or when the mine is flooded at its end-life, the backfill is subjected to underground water flows that may leach and spread the pollutants (mainly metals, sulphates, and acidity) which can contaminate the underground waters. The aim of this study is to characterize the leaching properties of CPB material and to identify the cement phases that ensure the metal fixation. A laboratory procedure was implemented consisting in the preparation of various paste backfill mixtures using sulphide-rich and sulphide-free materials, different types of binder, and mixing waters having various sulphates, copper and zinc concentrations. After 90-days curing time, the samples were submitted to column leaching tests. The CPB materials were flushed each day with 100 ml of deionised water during 100 days. The collected leachates were then analyzed for pH, Eh, electric conductivity and chemical composition. For some samples, a differential acid neutralisation test was carried out. The objective of this experiment is to dissolve selectively the hydrated phases by adding incremental acid concentrations. By analyzing punctually the equilibrated solutions, the composition of the dissolved phases and their metal content can be estimated. The leaching test results showed that the pH of the leachates remains alkaline during the test period. When the pH decreases under 10 (after 30 days), different behaviours in terms of chemical element release (especially for zinc) were observed. During the test, the oxidation of pyrite seems to slow down, probably due to passivating phenomena. Moreover, the differential acid neutralisation test results allowed a better understanding of the CPB mineralogy and the Zn-bearing cement phases. Zinc and the other metals seem to be fixed within a calcium-magnesium silicate.

Prior tests by Dorn, where the strain rate in a tensile test was suddenly changed, have shown a small, but definite rate-history effect to exist. If this effect is neglected in the calculation of creep behavior from tensile results, an error should occur. This paper shows that this error is smaller than experimental scattering, and may be neglected. DORN1 has found a small but definite rate-history effect in the aluminum alloy 250 at liquid-nitrogen temperature using tensile tests with an abrupt rate change. Skorpion Zinc operates a solvent extraction/electrowinning zinc plant producing over 150 000 t/a of special high grade (SHG) zinc (>99.995% Zn). In the current flow sheet copper and cadmium are cemented from the neutral leach solution using zinc powder, to prevent galvanic corrosion of plant equipment and build-up of copper in plant solutions. This process is effective but unfortunately consumes expensive zinc dust and produces a low value copper product. The EMEW® (Electrometals electrowinning) technology of Electrometals Technologies Ltd. uses a rapid flow of electrolyte through a cylindrical cell to deposit copper or other metals from dilute solution (less than 1 g/L) [1]. The copper can be deposited as powder or may be harvested as a tubular cathode product. The advantage of the use of EMEW® technology at Skorpion Zinc will be to eliminate the use of expensive zinc dust and to produce a high value copper product for sale. Following extensive bench test work, a piloting campaign was carried out at Skorpion Zinc. The tests demonstrated the ability of the EMEW® cell to effectively remove copper from solution through direct electrowinning at lower operating cost than cementation. The overwhelming weight of scientific opinion indicates that human activity is having a discernible and negative influence on the earthÆs climate system. The Australian Government, together with about 100 other nations, has accepted the findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change third assessment report, released in 2001. This report was prepared by several hundred eminent scientists from all over the world, from various scientific disciplines and with differing opinions on global warming. The IPCC third assessment report contains a series of relevant, significant conclusions; for example, it finds that there is an increasing body of observations that gives a collective picture of a warming world and other changes in the climate system. Global average surface temperature increased over the past 100 years by about 0.6¦C. This may not seem much, but in the 900 years beforehand, the EarthÆs temperature remained relatively stable. The 20th century was the warmest of the past 1000 years in the northern hemisphere (there is much better information available from the northern hemisphere than the southern hemisphere). The 1990s were the warmest decade of the millennium in the northern hemisphere and 1998 was the warmest year. Although many factors influenced the EarthÆs climate, scientists are confident that greenhouse gas increases were the main factor contributing to global warming in the last 50 years of the 20th century. Increases in carbon dioxide, methane, troposhperic (lower atmosphere) ozone, halocarbons and nitrous oxide have all contributed to global warming. Combating climate change cannot be done without the cooperation of industry and the community at large. It is important that Government and industry work together to achieve greenhouse gas abatement while ensuring continued economic growth. The cause of the problem û the generation of greenhouse gas emissions û lies at the heart of the structure and size of modern economic activity. Greenhouse gas emissions are embedded in our way of life from our energy consumption patterns to the basic production of food. Moreover, the costs of the impacts of climate change to the earth will be potentially revolutionary, not merely evolutionary. It is in this light, acknowledging both the seriousness and nature of the problem before us that I want to reflect on the key drivers in the international climate change negotiations. A consideration of the past, present and future from what I see as the mid-way point in the process. In 1997, Parties agreed to adopt the Kyoto Protocol, which sets out mandatory targets for greenhouse gas emissions for developed countries.

In modern steel continuous casting technologies mould fluxes are well-known to assure lubrication required by tribological system of mould-solidifying strand shell, and to provide crystalline phase solid film, contributing to control heat extraction between strand and mould wall. Actual cooling rates during normal continuous casting mould operations are far higher than critical cooling rate of the liquid slag. Indeed, DTA measurements point out that even relatively small cooling rates of 30?50 K/min are high enough to give exiguous formation of crystals. In this paper, contribution of devitrification in defining crystalline phase formation of industrial basic mould slag, used in continuous casting of crack-sensitive steel grades, has been investigated by means of non-isothermal experiments study. Devitrification has proved to play a major role in mould flux crystallization in a working environment explaining the higher amount of crystalline phase formed in plant sample in comparison with lab sample from DTA analysis with typical cooling rate of 5?20 K/min. The amount of crystalline phases formed ranks as follow: Cuspidine > Combeite > Gehlenite. Kinetic analysis of DTA non-isothermal experiments has provided kinetic parameters through Kissinger and Ozawa methods, as Avrami constant resulting to be n ?2 and activation energy of Cuspidine crystallization resulting to be EC= 315 kJ/mole. The effect of addition to the parent material of oxides as MnO, TiO2, ZrO2, Al2O3 and Fe2O3near to saturation point has proved to affect, in certain cases, crystallization behaviour of mold flux. In particular, MnO, TiO2, ZrO2oxides produce a relevant dump of crystallization of Combeite and Gehlenite phases, while Al2O3and Fe2O3do not appreciably affect crystallization. Australia’s Minerals Tertiary Education Council (MTEC) has achieved several successes during its first three years of operation. This initiative was developed through the Minerals Council of Australia, in conjunction with three partner universities involved in mining engineering education. The partner universities are the University of New South Wales (UNSW); Curtin University, the West Australian School of Mines (WASM); and the University of Queensland (UQ). The collaboration between these partner universities and industry has led to the development of shared course material, cross-institutional teaching arrangements, and the development of a number of flexible, distance-based delivery programs. This article then discusses future initiatives. Importantly, the challenge is the future initiative planned to cement this collaboration by the formation of a “virtual” national school of mining engineering: Mining Education Australia (MEA). This will provide a common third and fourth year program to all three universities beginning in 2007. The common program will involve innovative teaching and learning arrangements, greater student exchange potential and a more significant input by industry into the education process.

Straits completed its Feasibility study on the Whim Creek Copper Project in 1996. At this stage WCCP provided Straits with an open pit mine - heap leach - SX-EW copper project to follow on from its successful Girilambone Copper Operation (GCC). Since this time Straits has continued to review WCCP investigating a number of development and production scenarios. The development of Whim Creek, early 2004 and is on schedule to commence copper production in the final quarter of 2004. On current reserves Whim Creek will produce approximately 17 000 tonnes of copper cathode per annum for three to four years, at cash costs of The paper will cover a general description of the project, the project development and key design issues. Additional construction related issues associated with the complete relocation of the GCC plant to Whim Creek will be covered in the conference presentation.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar modelos de simulação, construídos através do software Talpac® em uma mina a céu aberto, a fim de analisar através de distribuições de probabilidade com o uso do software Minitab®, alguns parâmetros que influenciam diretamente a produtividade dos caminhões fora de estrada. Dentre estes parâmetros, os principais são: Carga média dos caminhões, velocidade média, número de viagens por hora de trabalho e tempo médio de fila na carga. Ao final, os dados de produtividade dos caminhões obtidos no modelo, serão comparados aos dados reais da mina, obtidos através do sistema de gerenciamento de frota Smartmine®, podendo este modelo ser validado ou não, tanto em termos de produtividade quanto dos demais parâmetros.

"The adaptation to platinum-group minerals (PGMs) of a protocol developed to predict gold recovery by gravity is presented. The protocol is based on three different data sets: ore characterization of gravity-recoverable minerals, description of their behaviour in cyclones and ball mills, and performance of recovery units. Examples of these are given. It is shown that the gravity-recoverable PGM (GRPGM) content can be very high. A case study at the Clarabelle mill is presented. Sperrylite is the dominant platinum mineral, and its partition curve is very similar to that of gold, despite its lower density. Its grinding kinetics is significantly higher than for gold. As a result, sperrylite accumulates in finer sizes than native gold, but can still be recovered by gravity or flash flotation. Recovery projections based on gravity recoverable data are presented.BACKGROUNDReliable modeling of gold recovery by gravity or flash flotation from a grinding circuit is based on the ability to describe the properties of gold-bearing particles in the ore, their behaviour in grinding and classification units and the performance of the equipment used for recovery, be it gravity or flotation. In underground mines, coal dust explosions are prevented by the addition of rock dust sufficient to render the coal dust inert. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed a hand-held instrument that uses optical reflectance to measure the explosibility of a rock dust and coal dust mixture. This instrument is called the Coal Dust Explosibility Meter (CDEM). In this study, NIOSH personnel accompanied Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) inspectors on their routine band surveys in five and three underground coal mines in MSHA District 2 (PA) and District 11 (AL), respectively. While underground, NIOSH personnel and MSHA inspectors used the CDEM to assess the explosibilities of the dust samples. The values of percent incombustible content (% IC) determined by the CDEM agreed well with those obtained later by low temperature ashing (LTA) in both MSHA and NIOSH laboratories. Further, the meter identified some samples as potentially explosible that LTA analysis had found to possess sufficient rock dust for inerting. The CDEM provides more information on the hazards in the mine. Rapid identification of areas with explosible dust mixtures using the CDEM allows for immediate intervention rather than a wait of several weeks for laboratory analysis.

This paper is one of a series of digests of foreign mining legislation and court decisions that is being prepared in advance of a general report relative to the right of American citizens to explore for minerals and to own and operate-mines in various foreign countries. This interpretation of the mining laws of Greece was prepared from information furnished by Ralph B. Curren, American assistant commercial attache, Athens, in reply to a questionnaire of the United States Bureau of Mines, transmitted through the courtesy of the commercial laws division of the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce. INTRODUCTION In his report,3 Mr. Curren states that the source of his information was the Director of Mines of the Greek Ministry of National Economy and the Mining Code of Greece, which was, compiled from existing laws in 1929,4 and which has since been modified by several acts of Parliament.
