A microestrutura resultante do processo de forjamento é influenciada por variáveis como temperatura, deformação, tamanho de grão austenítico inicial e taxa de resfriamento. A proposta deste trabalho é estudar o comportamento termomecânico do aço ABNT 4140 mantido nas temperaturas de 900, 1000, 1100 e 1200ºC por 22, 66 e 200 minutos e, posteriormente, forjado e analisar a influência da temperatura sobre os grãos austeníticos que caracterizam os fenômenos metalúrgicos ocorridos.

Pontos estratégicos de solos foram analisados com o objetivo de estudar a possível contaminação de água pluvial, por difusividade, mantidas em reservatórios existentes na Ilha dos Arvoredos, localizada no Guarujá, litoral de São Paulo, Brasil. Iniciou-se o procedimento com a preparação das amostras (homogeneização e quarteamento), seguida das análises físicas (granulometria e umidade). A caracterização foi realizada por espectrometria de fluorescência de Raio-X e por espectrometria de absorção atômica. As concentrações de enxofre foram quantificadas por forno de combustão e as cinzas e matéria volátil por TGA (Analisador Termogravimétrico). As análises realizadas em Raio –X mostraram composição química de solo argiloso com altas concentrações de SiO2 e Al2O3 e as realizadas no equipamento de combustão mostraram concentrações de enxofre menores que 0,03%. Os resultados se apresentaram negativos para metais pesados ou outro tipo de elemento que poderia comprometer a potabilidade das águas contidas nos reservatórios.

"INTRODUCTIONRio Algom's Stanleigh Mill in Elliot Lake began production in June of 1983. The highly instrumented mill treats uranium ore at an average rate of 3900 metric tons per day. To help ensure a good start-up and low operating costs, an extensive training program was undertaken prior to and during start-up. This presentation describes how an unconventional operating crew were combined to form an operating unit with a high efficiency in terms of production and labour utilization. I would like to point out at the outset that the operating philosophy, and the role of the supervisors and the operators as set up at Stanleigh is not unique. Indeed, I have seen the same results at a couple of small plants where efficiency meant survival. However, these situations appeared to be the exception, and it was not readily apparent how similar results could be obtained in a larger plant. A factor that existed at the time was low labour turnover. As in most parts of Canada, jobs were easy to get in the Elliot Lake camp in the late 1970's. This, and other factors, contributed to an unusually high labour turnover. This changed dramatically in the early 1980's. Indeed, Rio's two other operating mills, Quirke and Panel reduced crew sizes at this time to reduce operating costs. As a result all of Stanleigh's operators came from Quirke and Panel with experience varying from 4 to 7 years. The experience that operators had was obviously of benefit and served to reduce the scope of the training program from what would have been required with inexperienced personnel."

"This paper describes the bench testing, pilot plant studies of alternative flowsheets, to determine the feasibility of gold recovery, by carbon in pulp extraction, in the Schumacher Mill gold flotation tailings. The economics were calculated based on pilot plant recoveries and actual industry operating costs.The economics of the carbon in pulp treatment of the gold flotation tailings were not justifiable. The economics of desliming the gold flotation tailings followed by carbon in pulp treatment were marginal, but favourable. INTRODUCTIONPamour Porcupine Mines, Limited is a gold, silver and copper producer located in Timmins, Ontario. In 1983 the head grade of Pamour's gold ores averaged nine one hundredths of a troy ounce of gold per short ton.Pamour operates two area mills to concentrate the gold ores. Free milling gold ores are processed at the Pamour One Mine mill, whereas the refractory carbonaceous gold ores, and complex gold, silver, and copper sulphide ores, are processed through the Schumacher Mine mill.The complex Schumacher mill feed ores do not all react favourably to flotation methods, consequently this study was commissioned to investigate the feasibility of the carbon in pulp cyanidation of the Schumacher mill gold flotation tailings. These tailings contain ten to fifteen percent of the gold in the mill feed. During the study period, the average grade of the Schumacher mill flotation tailings was nine one thousandths of a troy ounce of gold per ton, or one quarter of a gram of gold per metric tonne."

A variety of cement raw materials occur within the Cenozoic sequence in Northland. These form the basis of Golden Bay Cement's cement manufacturing operation at Portland, Whangarei. High grade limestone is taken from the Whangarei Limestone formation, which has been shown to have been sub-aerially weathered and developed mature karst features prior to deposition of the overlying allochthon sediments. In this instance, remobilisation of allochthon sediments following uplift and erosion is inferred. At Portland Quarry, argillaceous limestone is extracted from deformed thrust sheets in the allochthon sequence. Quarry operations have been designed to handle the steep asymmetric folds, thrust faults and fracture zones that affect the resource.

Walls consisting of CFA-piles are often used for vertical cut offs for building pits. Several methods of installation and geometry may be used and sizes, depths and strengths of walls necessary vary widely. Based on experience with secant CFA-pile walls in The Netherlands, requirements for this type of wall can be set with a risk management view to it. This paper describes those requirements, based on specific local conditions.

Geological uncertainty is an unavoidable characteristic of all mining projects since only limited information is available from sampling. Mine planning and development decisions with significant economic consequences are made when the geological heterogeneity is inherently uncertain. Geostatistical simulation is preferred over kriging because the methodology provides alternative property realizations that can be combined into a model of geological uncertainty. Geological uncertainty can be transferred into production uncertainty, which can help characterize the economic risk of the project. This paper presents a case study for the Pogo property, being prepared for development near Fairbanks, Alaska. The exact dimensions, grades and production predictions have been modified; however, the methodology is illustrative. The geostatistical methodology consists of (1) assembling the relevant drillhole data and establishing a suitable coordinate system, (2) calculating the target distribution, (3) creating a model of spatial correlation, (4) generating multiple realizations at a small scale and (5) linearly averaging all the realizations to the chosen selective mining unit (SMU) support size. The geostatistical model is then used to calculate production uncertainty.

Determination of optimal blast parameters have been the priority act for blasters on the field due to financial and technical properties of the operation. Therefore many researchs were done to establish a general formula for many years. These intends could reach some empirical and numerical design frames consisting the rock, geology and explosives properties. Blasting parameters have to be adjusted according to the desired fragmentation rate especially on the mines where particle size distrubition after blasting has a great importance. Therefore the blast designs have to be evaluated considering the particle size distribution after the blasts. The Kuz-Ram model which was modified by Cunningham is one of the tools for estimating the particle size. Although it doesn’t give an accurate result, it can be very succesful on modifying the blasting design parameters by establishing a back correlation between the blasting parameters and the exact particle size distribution results which can be easily achieved by digital image processing system. Within the scope of this study, the particle size distribution after blasting was assessed by Split-Desktop digital image processing system and bench blasting parameters were studied considering the desired particle size distribution at Espey colemanite mine using Kuz-Ram and digital image processing system combination to determine the specific blasting parameters for this site.

An equilibrium study was carried out at 1873 K to ascertain the effect of carbon in CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO-MnO-FetO slag systems on their FetO and MnO activity coefficients, representing the slag?s thermodynamic potential for steel reoxidation. Both ?FetOand ?MnO showed not only a sharp increment, but also a simultaneous slow decrement by increasing carbon content in slag, suggesting opposite roles of the carbon according to its stable forms. XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) was introduced to clarify the stable forms of carbon in slag. XPS results prove that carbon dissolves in slag as carbonate, and carbide ions under oxidizing and reducing atmospheres, respectively. It was concluded that carbonate ions increase ?FetOand ?MnO, and that carbide decreases them. This paper suggests an application method of the present results to actual ladle refining processes, in order to enhance steel cleanliness without decreasing (FetO + MnO) content in slag. The modelling work presented here concerns Ni-bearing steels produced by Imphy Ugine Précision. In such grades, the contents of elements such as silicon or titanium must be precisely controlled by slag/metal treatments. The slag phase is described by IRSID slag model that has been slightly revised in order to better fit recent SiO2activity measurements in the low SiO2content domain of the CaO-Al2O3-CaO system. The metallic alloys are described by the unified interaction parameter model (UIPM). The mining sector is a major economic driver for Canadian, and British Columbian communities. In parallel strong commitments have been made by industry to the well-being and sustainability of associated communities. However, these dimensions are the least understood. Especially lacking are focused regional investigations that compare the well-being and sustainability of communities dependent on different resources sectors. It is hypothesized that this type of comparative analysis will help to foster a greater understanding of what makes a resource or mining community healthy and sustainable. This paper describes research that examined community-level indicators associated with well-being (e.g. education, income and employment) and sustainability (e.g. economic diversity). The indicators were derived from Canadian Census data for 31 British Columbia resource-based communities (with a focus on mining) during a period of time (1991 to 2001) when resource sectors experienced an economic downturn. Our findings identify that during this decade, mining communities differed significantly from other resource-based communities, and comparative analysis of census derived indictors illuminate challenges that mining communities in British Columbia face with respect to wellbeing and sustainability (such as economic diversity, unemployment, and population loss). To contribute to the mining sector?s efforts towards meeting their commitments to communities, this paper concludes by proposing strategic opportunities aimed at the enhancement of mining community sustainability for policy-makers, communities, and the mining industry to consider.

THE low-volatile, or smokeless, coal field of southern West Virginia is in Fayette, Raleigh, Wyoming, Mercer, Summers and McDowell counties, in the extreme southern portion of the state, and extends into the adjacent counties of Tazewell and Buchanan in Virginia. McDowell County is the largest producer, with Fayette and Raleigh counties next. The total area of the field (Fig. 1) is approximately 1600 square miles, or 1,024,000 acres. The percentage of volatile matter in the various seams ranges from 15 to 26 per cent. The upper limit of true low-volatile coal is usually considered to be 23 per cent volatile matter; above this point, the coal usually is classed as medium volatile. This limit will be used in this paper.

Keywords: Bi-directional tests, Osterberg cell, O-cell®, static load tests, Timeset® Static load testing, where loads are applied vertically to the top of the pile and often referred to as 'top down testing', has been used for many years and has become a 'standard' test for the world of foundation engineering. The method, although well developed, cannot be used under certain circumstances, magnitude of load being a particular issue. There is a finite limit to the load capacity that can be applied with either kentledge, the use of reaction piles or anchors, and as the loads increase, the costs escalate dramatically. A novel test method seeks to overcome all the associated problems of large scale and restrictive area "top down testing", utilising static load testing techniques. The method requires the foundation element to be divided into two or more sections and these can be loaded axially as required using a portion of the foundation element as a reaction. This paper presents some recent applications and developments in the use and application of the bi-directional testing technique using the Osterberg Cell or O-cell® and outlines some of the many advantages of the system. Recent bi-directional test loads applied to bored piles have mobilised capacities of 279 MN and with flight auger piles up to 25 MN.

Bowie Resources maintains one of the most pro-active ground control programs in the U.S. mining industry today. Its guiding philosophy is that everyone in the organization, from the miners at the face all the way through the top management, are involved in ground control. Some of the unique elements of the Bowie ground control program include: ? Roof bolt operators log the stratigraphy of test holes in nearly every cut. These ?lithgraphs? are used by section foremen to determine the need for additional roof support, and they are entered into the geologic data base for use in geologic modeling and mapping. ? Underground core drilling is conducted to obtain data for CMRR and stability maps. ? Weekly ?Quality? meetings, involving mine management and technical staff, are held to ensure that ground control information is integrated into production operations. The paper will describe the program in detail, discussing the involvement of roof bolters, section foremen, surveyors, technical staff, and production managers. It will also show how the program has contributed to the mine planning process. Case histories of successful ground control interventions will be discussed.
