Native asphalt was produced by five companies in two States, Texas and Utah. Bituminous limestone, used primarily as a paving material for street and road repair, was produced by White Uvalde Mines and by Azrock Industries Inc., Uvalde County, TX. In June, Azrock Industries was purchased by the R L. White Co. Gilsonite, a solidified hydrocarbon found only in Utah and Colorado, was mined by American Gilsonite Co., a division of Chevron Resources Co. (a subsidiary of Standard Oil Co. of California); by Ziegler Chemical and Mineral Corp.; and by Hydrocarbon Mining Co. (a subsidiary of Oberon Oil Inc., a Utah corporation) from properties in Uintah County, UT. Gilsonite is used for a variety of purposes including automobile bodysealer, light-weight aggregate for cement used in oil well drilling, asphaltic building board, protective coverings, anticorrosive paints, and roofing compounds.

"Over the past two decades, declining ore body grades, increased operating costs and increased construction costs have provided an incentive for the development of progressively larger flotation machines. As a consequence, the 60 to 100 cubic foot flotation machine of the l950's and l960's is being rapidly replaced by large volume machines, with a resulting improvement in the flotation machine specific capacity (TPH processed per square foot floor space), specific power (HP per TPH processed) and process control simplicity. The recent development, and satisfactory plant evaluation, of the WEMCO 1000 cubic foot flotation machine provides the means by which further economic and operating advantages may be incorporated in high tonnage mill applications.The systematic development of the large 1000 cubic foot flotation machine, and its subsequent performance evaluation in beneficiating metalliferous ores (copper, zinc and iron) will be reviewed in this paper and recently completed plant results will also be provided."

This paper outlines the results of a relationship developed during the design and construction of the foundations for the Gallery Towers project in Melbourne. Both the builder and the piling contractor were determined to arrive at a satisfactory foundation solution to the problems encountered at the site. The scope of piling work was to provide load-bearing piles under the building columns, some of which were located within a retention system that also required a piling solution. Geological conditions were variable and challenging. The site area was small and located adjacent to the National Arts Centre in the developed Southbank area, a high density office area. This presented logistical problems in limiting construction traffic on site and also demanding minimal noise and vibration emanating from piling activities. The piling contractor, Vibro-Pile, and the builder, Walter Construction Group, faced the challenges presented with a refreshing cooperative attitude that was beneficial to both companies. Commercial issues rising from design and construction problems were first put apart in order to allow the respective technical department of each company to work with minimum constraints to achieve the most cost effective solution. In the process usual adversarial attitudes resulting in loss of time and money was avoided. A number of issues were addressed successfully at minimum cost and time during this contract. Despite the difficulties encountered, the job was completed on time and with negligible claims for extras, resulting in the development of a strong mutual respect between both companies.

During 1983, Ecuador's gross domestic product (GDP) decreased by a reported 3.3% in real terms, the second consecutive decline in the economy after more than a decade of growth generated mainly by petroleum export revenues. The slowdown was due, in part, to the effects of the world recession, lower foreign demand for oil, depressed world oil prices, and reduced demand and prices for Ecuador's traditional agricultural exports. Inflation accelerated to an estimated 55% annual rate. The sucre was devalued in March, for the second time in less than a 12-month period, by 27% after remaining unchanged during the previous decade. In addition, continuous adjustments were made every weekday, effectively devaluing the sucre another 30% by yearend. Ecuador's production of crude petroleum increased almost 12% in 1983 compared with that of 1982. Average daily production was 237,100 barrels per day (bbl/d), up from 211,300 bbl/d in 1982.

O presente trabalho tem como objetivo estudar a viabilidade do uso e a influência do ácido cítrico nas propriedades de pastas e argamassas feitas com cimento Portland CPV ARI, tanto no estado fresco quanto no endurecido. As dosagens de ácido cítrico utilizadas foram 0, 0,4% e 0,8% em relação à massa do aglomerante. Nas pastas de cimento produzidas, foram feitos ensaios de determinação da água de consistência normal e tempo de início e fim de pega. Já nas argamassas foram realizados ensaios de determinação do índice de consistência, densidade de massa, teor de ar incorporado no estado fresco, resistência à compressão axial, nas idades de 7, 14 e 28 dias e análises por meio da técnica de DRX. Os resultados mostram que o ácido cítrico, além de melhorar a trabalhabilidade da massa, contribui para aumento na resistência mecânica nas idades superiores a 14 dias, desde que aplicado em teores aceitáveis.

Traditional iron ore wet beneficiation plants are large multilevel structures, often integrated into centralised processing plants. They are characterised by sizeable footprints, substantial water and power consumption, inflexible design and low scalability. Significant design changes that address these issues need to be made before relocatable modular plants become feasible. Firstly, large amounts of processing water are required in standard wet plants, so it is vital that water consumption is reduced to an absolute minimum. Secondly, the process of depositing tailings into tailings storage facilities (TSFs) is environmentally destructive, consumes significant power and requires lengthy approvals to be completed. Thirdly, modules need to be easily and quickly relocatable.The solution to reducing water usage and eliminating TSF requirements is accomplished by providing a tailings dewatering and dry-stacking capability into a separate module. This equipment needs to dewater tailings to a point (typically below 20 per cent moisture) where dry stacking becomes possible – design is mainly driven by material rheology and particle size distribution (PSD). In this respect, a flexible and scalable strategy is employed to dewatering modules, allowing a variety of components such as dewatering cyclone clusters, paste thickeners, fine mesh vibrating screens and filter presses to be used to achieve the necessary moisture level, enabling the final dry stacking to be accomplished by a simple telescopic stacking system. Plant relocatability also requires modules to comply with mass and dimensional constraints, as well as ‘plug and play’ ease-of-use features.For coarse particle upgrade, jigs provide a low-cost and effective solution, whereas fine and ultra-fine Fe units can be recovered using Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separation (WHIMS). Recently, sensor sorting – a dry process using X-ray fluorescence, X-ray transmission, laser or other sensors – has begun to make an impact in coarse particle separation, although capacities are still low. The overall objective of a plant is to provide an Fe upgrade of four to five per cent with a feed of up to 4 Mt/a and a recovery of approximately 50 per cent.CITATION:Graham, T, 2017. This paper briefly describes a simple air pycno-meter and its use for rapid determination of the composition of mixtures of solid particles. Research on such problems as the pelletizing of solids, the mixing of solid particles, and the comminution of mixtures can be simplified by means of this analytical tool. THEORY OF OPERATION Liquid pycnometers1 are commonly employed to measure volumes. These devices are time consuming and sometimes give inconsistent results. The Russia Wharf segment of the Silver Line Phase II Project for the MBTA incorporated ground freezing and underpinning during New Austrian Tunneling Method(NATM) tunneling through timber pile foundations, urban fill, and abandoned wharf structures beneath two historic 7-story buildings with steel frames and masonry facades. During construction, the project team implemented an extensive program to monitor, evaluate, and mitigate the ground and building movements caused by the various construction activities. Mitigation included freeze cycling and building raising/lowering to compensate for ground movements and safely maintain the serviceability and occupancy of the buildings. In this paper, we present the history of the freeze, tunnel construction, and thaw-related movements that occurred and the building response that we observed.

As everyone knows, blasters are required to file blast reports of every blast for regulatory purposes. To this day, the authors see many handwritten blast reports. Handwritten blast reports are notorious for containing errors or omissions. This is not because the blaster intends to misreport information. It is because blasters have many tasks to complete in a day, are sometimes in a rush, and could accidentally miscalculate data, omit items, or record incorrect data. In most cases, blasters do not suffer consequences to these errors because blast reports are seldom reviewed in detail. In some cases, such as when a blasting operation undergoes some sort of litigation process, the reports are reviewed in detail and the blaster is ultimately held responsible. If the reports contain errors, the blaster can be fined, have his/her license revoked, or worse. Electronic blast reporting and centralized data management can help reduce or eliminate the potential for accidental blast reporting errors to occur. This paper presents many ways that electronic blast reporting can reduce or eliminate blast reporting errors, decrease time and extra costs spent reporting, and improve efficiencies in the field and the office.

"SUMMARYAs a result of the increased demand for fluorspar during the war, the Bureau of Mines investigated numerous fluorspar properties in the southern Illinois field, which is centered in Rosiclare. Among these the J. J. Shelby 40-acre tract on the western edge of the district presented favorable factors that caused it to be chosen /or exploration.H. G. Spiller, formen lessee of the property, had explored the Shelby vein by means of an adit level and winze, and showed it to contain goad values in zinc and fluorspar at the depth explored. A diamond-drill hole with which Spiller explored the vein 78 feet southwest of the winze, however, failed to cut ore. After studying the field evidence, the Bureau concluded that the vein merited further exploration, particularly at a depth of about 440 feet, where the Fredonia limestone would form the foot-wall of the vein and the hanging wall would be the competent Cypress sandstone.Between October 17, 1944, and March 26, 1945, three diamond-drill holes were bored for a total inclined depth of 1,592 feet. Holes 1 and spaced approximately 500 feet apart, explored the vein at 440 feet 4 below the surface. The economic mineralization existed in the vein where cut. Hole 3 cut the fault at approximately 300 feet below the outcrop but failed to find any vein matter except stringers of calcite with small amounts of pyrite."

An environmental management system (EMS) is a key part of a company?s environmental stewardship. Procedures and practices to continually improve environmental performance can provide great benefits in operating the company. Managing site environmental quality data is a key component of this. An environmental data management system (EDMS) is an important element of the EMS for mining and other projects, providing project staff with the information that they need to make decisions that can have a significant impact on public health. Improvements in computers, data communications, and transfer formats have made it much easier to implement an integrated EDMS program for gathering, managing, selecting, and displaying data from the field and the lab. Software now lets users define sampling plans, create files for field data entry, and print Chains of Custody. Laptop and handheld computers facilitate field data entry and may provide automated communication back to the office. Most labs can now create usable electronic data deliverables. QC checks and limit comparisons can be largely automated. The result is organized data that can be efficiently used for reporting, graphing, and mapping, to better understand project issues.

The Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has demonstrated a prototype hydrogen-fueled mining vehicle as an alternative to diesel equipment in underground mines. Safety and control systems were added to allow a 70-kW rubber-tired hydrogen vehicle, originally developed by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and Hydrogen Consultants, Inc. (now Hydrogen Components, Inc., of Littleton, CO), to be tested. This work began in late 2000 and culminated with a Mine Safety and Health Administration fire safety review and field tests at the Stillwater Mine in Nye, MT, in 2004.

On the underwater testing of explosives, the measuring system consists of water filled test pond, tourmaline based pressure sensor, measuring cable and measuring unit, which supplies the DC current to the pressure sensor. Depending on the length of the measuring cable, it is always possible that some signal damping may occur in case the measurements are carried out without the signal amplifier to keep the measuring system as simple as possible. Therefore the length of the measuring cable should always be as short as possible.

Variographic analysis, a classical tool from the Theory of Sampling (TOS), can address practical situations with multiple variables; however, its application has very often been limited to one variable at a time. Recent developments have shown the benefits of using multivariate approaches for variographic characterisation of a set of variables instead of considering individual variables sequentially. Among these approaches, the multivariogram has been revealed itself to be a powerful tool when the overall time-variability of a process must be summarised in terms of a large set of properties (variables) to assess its true global variability. However, even when choosing the properties of interest carefully, the resulting global variance obtained with this approach may be very high. In particular, some variables that contribute to a major proportion of the global (multivariate) variability could be less important for the process performance than others having a lower variability. To address this issue, a new approach is proposed, combining the multivariogram with process modelling and multivariate data analysis methods such as partial least squares (PLS) regression from chemometrics. An example from the mineral processing industry is presented, for which the process performance could be linked to key process variables (sensor data) using the PLS regression. Once introduced in the multivariogram equation, PLS model parameters (loading-weights or regression coefficients) can be used to weigh the variables according to their relevance for the process. In addition, this also permits characterisation of process performance variability with time using only the process input variables and a weighted metric according to the PLS regression model. Ultimately, this method helps to find an optimised sampling procedure in terms of frequency, sampling mode and number of increments according to the actual overall process performance. Although explosives incidents caused by lightning strikes are rare, lightning is of great concern to blasting professionals who spend many hours working on or near loaded blast patterns.

The transportation of cemented and non-cemented mine tailings in the form of paste through pipelines is one of the main stages of paste backfill operations. For the purpose of pipeline design, the rheological properties of the materials, such as yield stress and viscosity must be determined. In this study, the yield stress of two Canadian mine tailings, for gold and copper mineralization, were studied using the vane method and slump tests. The comparison between the vane method and the slump tests indicates that the slump tests generally overestimate the yield stress values for both cemented and non-cemented paste backfills. In addition, the effects of 5% Portland cement (type 10) and mixing time on the yield stress of paste backfills were investigated. The percentage of cement as a binder agent has a direct effect on the increase of the yield stress of paste backfills. Yield stress measurements show that mixing times of 4 minutes and 12 minutes have the same effect on the yield stress values.

High Pressure Sulfuric Acid/Oxygen Leaching of Platinum Group Metals Bearing Ni-Cu Mattes The processing of platinum bearing Ni-Cu ores for the extraction of platinum group metals (PGMs) involves comminution, flotation, smelting, and converter treatment of the furnace matte. Leaching circuits are predominantly used for further processing to separate the base metals and PGMs contained in the converter matte. Nickel dissolution is primarily achieved in the first stage leach (high pressure or atmospheric leaching, or a combination of the two), which is followed by second stage high pressure sulphuric acid/oxygen leaching to dissolve copper and the remaining nickel. PGMs are recovered from the leaching residue in downstream processes, and their dissolution in the first two leaching stages must hence be limited. Studies have been conducted to investigate the leaching mechanisms and kinetics of base metals in different leaching environments. The key operating parameters that influence the leaching kinetics of these metals include the temperature, acid concentration, degree of agitation, feed particle size distribution, and oxygen partial pressure. There is, however, a limited understanding of the behaviour of PGMs in the high pressure leaching process. Consequently, this process is controlled based on operators' intuition despite its importance in the recovery of PGMs. An improved fundamental understanding of the behaviour of PGMs in this leaching environment is required to be able to accurately model the process. This in turn will allow the development of an improved control strategy and the estimation of optimum operating conditions. An overview of the leaching mechanisms of base metals and the effects of key operating parameters on their dissolution kinetics in different leaching environments are presented. Models that have been developed to predict the leaching behaviour of base metals are discussed and evaluated. Finally, initial results obtained with an experimental setup that will be used to investigate the behaviour of PGMs in high pressure leaching systems are discussed and compared with published results.

In this study, we focused the shock wave propagating in case as confinement factor. Therefore, the objective of this study was to obtain a better understanding of the influence of shock wave propagating in case on the detonation characteristics of explosives in laboratory scale.
