Free-standing supports are commonly used in coal mines in the USA, particularly when longwalling. A recent trend has been the development of prop supports. Prop supports have many advantages over bulky, crib-type secondary standing supports, particularly in regard to material handling and installation. The challenge in prop design has been to develop load capacities that can compete with crib type systems and to develop reliable (stable) yielding capability. This paper will focus on the design aspects of steel prop supports, specifically, and evaluate the various concepts that have been developed to provide easy height adjustment and sustainable stable yielding under load. The design and resulting improvement provided by recent support developments called the Quik Stik and Ball Buster are discussed in detail. Performance areas that still need improvement in the design and usage of free standing supports in general are identified and possible solutions outlined.

San Juan Coal Co. (SJCC) operates an underground coal mine near Farmington, NM. Continuous miners and a longwall produce 6.3 to 7.2 Mt/a (7 million to 8 million stpy). SJCC is owned and operated by BHP Billiton. The coal seam at SJCC has been shown to have a propensity for spontaneous combustion. As such, during the feasibility study for this project, it was elected to use a bleederless ventilation system on the longwall. Due to the combination of spontaneous combustion, methane liberation and, to a lesser extent, hydrogen sulfide, a typical wraparound ventilation system would not be appropriate. Three-entry gate roads are developed, and the longwall gob is sealed as mining progresses. SJCC uses a nitrogen injection system to continuously inertize the gob.

Equilibrium distribution coefficients were determined for some monovalent and polyvalent ions for several absorbing and exchanging media as functions of pH and initial ion concentration. Among ions studied were NH4 (I), K(I), Ni(II), Ce(III), Th(IV), and Mo(VI). Absorbents used were: ion exchange resins; a tertiary, and a quaternary amine in an inert solvent; and some activated carbons. The ions studied were in aqueous HCI, HNO3, H2SO4, or HC104 solutions. The classical mass action expression proved of little value in describing the variations observed. The data indicate that the determining factors in absorption and ion exchange may be the ionic species in the aqueous solution, which in turn depend upon pH, dilution, and perhaps other conditions. Three sorption processes have become prominent in recovering values from leach solutions. These are: 1) ion exchange, 2) solvent extraction (liquid ion exchange), and 3) physical adsorption by materials of high specific surface. In the first two of these processes the exchange reaction is considered chemical in nature, and is discussed in terms of the mass action principle. The third is considered a surface phenomenon and is discussed in terms of surface areas and various forms (Gouy, Stern, Grahame, etc.) of the Helmholtz double-layer theory. Generally speaking, we have found in chemical analysis and hydrometallurgical studies that there are close similarities between the three sorption processes, and also differences which are difficult to reconcile with any of the usual theoretical treatments. That others have experienced the same troubles is shown by the fact that usable processes, in chemical analysis as well as in hydrometallurgy, generally are discovered by empirical procedures. EXPERIMENTAL CONSlDERATlONS The gaps between theory and practice have allowed many conflicting statements to appear in the litera- ture. To learn, in particular, the behavior of some metallic ions on a cation exchange resin at a constant pH, equilibration studies were made over a wide range of concentrations.' Results are shown in Fig. 1 for four metals in hydrochloric acid solution on a strongly acidic cation exchange resin, AG 50W-X8 (Bio-Rad). The distribution coefficient, defined as D = amount of metal extracted per g of resin/amount of metal unextracted per ml of solution is seen to vary in a way to support all manner of reports about its behavior with changes in solution concentration. The metals used were chosen from those least likely to form stable chloro-complexes. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report summarizes a study of large-scale strata response to longwall mining at a western U.S. coal mine. This study utilized surface and subsurface measurements, geologic mapping, in situ stress measurements, and pressure cell readings to characterize strata behavior. Preliminary analysis of surface subsidence and time-domain reflectometry (TDR) was used to determine a suggested main roof caving sequence. Coal ejected from the face apparently resulted from brittle failures that occurred because of lack of significant yield zone development. The combination of a strong coal with pronounced directional behavior, low overburden pressures, a good caving roof, and a high-production environment that minimized time-dependent loading apparently reduced yielding of the longwall face. The panel 1 headgate-entry design appears adequate; however, the abutment pillar and adjacent panel tailgate rib are highly stressed and may contribute to problems during second panel mining. The small chain pillar yielded after passage of the face, but the pillar width may be near maximum since evidence of a stressed core exists.

There is a long history of coal production in Turkey with electric energy generated from power plants since the 1950s. However, the cost of power generation is high. Therefore, it has become necessary to find a means of decreasing production costs to become more competitive in a global market. This paper attempts to economically minimize the overall operating costs of a dragline-shovel-truck system applied at an open pit mine that has fed the Yatagan power plant since 1979, lowering the lignite production cost, and indirectly, the overall electricity generation unit cost. Systems currently in place, as a result of former optimization studies, are time-consuming and expensive to re-implement to comply with today’s very different geometric and economic conditions affecting mining operations. In such cases, rather than re-optimization, it is more viable to identify the parameters that affect the minimum unit cost, via a cost minimization study, allowing present mine equipment to be utilized more efficiently. Unit cost minimization analyses are subject to the capacity of the pool of mining equipment available, combined with the mining block geometry from pre-stripping onwards. In this overall unit cost minimization study, P&H shovels and CAT 777 trucks with capacities of 15 yd3 and 77 tons, respectively, were used in truck-shovel pre-stripping operations. A 65 yd3 Marion 8050 dragline was used to expose the overburden immediately over the coal seam. Pre-stripping bench heights varied from 8 m to 20 m and dragline bench heights from 20 m and 25 m were evaluated to minimize the unit cost of field operations. Total overburden extended to a depth of 60 m (35 m to 40 m for pre-stripping). Minimization analyses performed on the pre-stripping truck-shovel operation, prior to dragline operations, determined that the shovel bench height should be 15 m requiring a dragline bench height of 25 m.

Drill core is preferred as the sample material for metallurgical and mineralogical characterisation and flowsheeting of an orebody. The question arises as to how to do this at the economic optimum, since geologists have several other strategic uses for their drill core. The limiting factors are the cost of extra drilling for the metallurgical testwork and the need to preserve the drill core record. In this study, the representative sampling of drill core at an economic optimum for metallurgical testing is addressed. This phase of the drill core work is preceded by earlier drill core characterisation - for which other appropriate sampling protocols are used - that has provisionally categorised the orebody into geometallurgical units. In stratified sampling of drill core, use is made of a version of the stratified approach to compound distributions proposed by Cochran in 1946. Use is made of Gy’s 50-piece minimum sample mass model to estimate minimum requisite sample mass. In the case where sampling and testwork are required on a Lifeof- Mine blend of a given ore deposit, whereby defined ore types or geometallurgical units are present, the sample mass requirement is significantly reduced by working from drill-core at the geometallurgical unit level. A case study using Raglan drill core is discussed. Using nickel as an indicator paymetal, and sampling at a fundamental variance level of 8%, the minimum sample masses for disseminated sulphides, net-textured sulphides, and massive sulphides are 3.80, 7.37 and 4.39 kg respectively. When the same drill-core is sampled as a Life-of-Mine mixture without knowledge of the geometallurgical units, the minimum sample mass increases to 84.28 kg. It is thus possible to assemble a representative Life-of-Mine sample of drill-core more economically, at the same time validating its representativity. Equivalent calculations for copper, platinum and palladium are discussed, with outcomes consistent with this finding. When all four paymetals are considered, one selects the largest minimum mass out of all four cases. This results in minimum sample masses of 11.67, 74.90 and 175.16 kg for disseminated sulphides, net-textured sulphides and massive sulphides respectively. The simulated Life-of- Mine blend would require a minimum sample mass of 377.33 kg to cover all four paymetals.

In underground mining operations, the over- riding issue has to be protection of worker health and safety. The employees underground, making a living in a dangerous occupation, know these are major issues. These men bargain their lives and health on the presumption that the operating management knows its business, and they, the underground employees, can pursue their occupation with the assurance that management has provided a safe and healthy ambient underground environment. When management assumes the mantle of protection of underground workers, it has to be positive that qualified engineers have designed the project, and that capable operating personnel are in charge and always available. Those persons with these responsibilities must be knowledgeable in the engineering and occupational health aspects of sine ventilation. The ultimate function of a mine ventilation system is to provide a comfortable, healthy and safe ambient environment for the underground workers. The attainment of these objectives has been complicated with the increased application of electrical equipment and diesel-powered mechanized mining equipment underground (discharging toxic diesel emissions); increased production rates with the attendant increased production of airborne dust; and mine development in increasingly hostile mineral formations containing combustible strata gases, radon gas emissions, along with high heat and humidity. In general, the modern mechanization of present mining operations has resulted in a sore complex set of problems for the engineer planning the underground ambient environment.

During the construction of the Island Line (ISL) in Hong Kong between 1982 and 1986 piled foundations of a building were encountered in a tunnel drive. As the tunnel alignment could not be changed work was temporarily suspended whilst grouting took place beneath the pile cap. The tips of the piles were then cut off. The normal precast concrete lining segments were replaced by the "stiffer" spheroidal graphite iron segments and tunnelling resumed. Settlement of the building was found to be under 10 mm due to the tunnel drive and no damage was reported to the building.

The QMM mineral sands of South East Madagascar contain approximately 1,900 million tonnes of mineable sand with a total heavy mineral (THM) content of roughly 4.5wt%. The QMM deposits are the world’s largest known reserves of 60% TiO2 ilmenite and also contain a small volume of zircon. The deposits are semi-continuous and homogenous and the mineralized sands are free flowing with minimal overburden, induration & slimes. These characteristics are favourable to dredge mining and allow the application of conventional wet gravity, electrostatic & magnetic separation to final products. A mature THM mineral suite of high valuable heavy minerals (VHM) content has enabled the development of a relatively simple separation process.

At the Lake Superior meeting, September, 1904, Messrs. A. Gibb and R. C. Philp presented a paper entitled " The Constitution of Mattes Produced in Copper-Smelting,"' in which they concluded that ferrous and cuprous sulphides formed the chemical compound, 5 Cu2S, FeS. They arrived at this inference from the observed fact that a matte containing Cu,S, 90.4, and FcS, 9.6 per cent. (or, in round figures, Cu2S, 90, and FeS, 10 per cent.), did not contain any metallic copper, while one with more than 10 per cent. of FeS readily dissolved copper, and with less than this amount retained copper in mechanical suspension. Although they determined the melting-points of five mattes containing from 32.6 to 80.1 per cent. of copper, they did not draw a freezing-point curve, as the necessary apparatus was not available. A microscopical examination of 11 polished samples gave them a grayish-black field of very uniform appearance, except that five of the specimens showed the presence of metallic copper. The object of the present investigation was to supplement the above paper by drawing the freezing-point curve of the ferrous sulphide-cuprous sulphide series, and to see how the constitution could be further revealed by microscopical work. The results obtained lead to conclusions very different from those of Gibb and Philp. While their paper bears the date 1904, it was published only in 1906.2 In the meantime, Bolles3 had presented his paper, " The Concentration of Gold and Silver in Iron-Bottoms." In 1990, a residential area above the North Outfall Sewer (NOS) tunnel constructed in 1924, experienced subsidence. After sewage was diverted into the North Outfall Replacement Sewer (NORS), soil probing from within the tunnel was conducted, soil-improvement options were developed, and a preferred grouting scheme was analyzed by numerical modeling to evaluate the stability of the 80-year+ old tunnel liner under grouting-induced loading conditions. This paper discusses the initial field investigation and the development and analysis of a grouting scheme originally intended to be implemented before relining of the tunnel. The scheme was later modified, and the new liner was installed before the final probing and grouting work was done.

O processo de soldagem por fricção com pino consumível (Friction Hydro-Pillar Processing- FHPP) um método de reparo no estado sólido que consiste no processamento termomecânico de um pino metálico em alta rotação e inserido em um orifício criado no material a reparar. O pino é pressionado com uma força axial e o aquecimento resultante do atrito dos materiais é suficiente para garantir a plastificação dos mesmos promovendo o preenchimento do orifício e a união dos componentes. Este trabalho é centrado na análise da distribuição de inclusões não metálicas do tipo Sulfetos de Manganês (MnS) presentes em juntas soldadas produzidas por esta técnica com a aplicação de diferentes forças axiais. Micrografias da zona termomecanicamente afetada (ZTMA) foram realizadas por microscopia ótica em amostras polidas e sem ataque para registrar as inclusões. Essas micrografias foram avaliadas via análise de imagens visando a determinação de quantidade, tamanho e área ocupada pelas inclusões nas juntas em juntas soldadas. O mapeamento identificou a distribuição e o tamanho médio das inclusões em função das forças axiais. Concluiu-se que a região analisada é potencialmente crítica no que diz respeito a tenacidade à fratura, uma vez que foi observada uma quantidade considerável de inclusões fragmentadas de dimensões reduzidas.

Actualmente el geólogo de mina toma información rutinaria, mapea los bancos de la mina, los taladros para voladura y loguea los núcleos de perforación y fragmentos del aire reverso. Para la localización en el campo utiliza un GPS que tiene una estación en tierra que permite triangular en tiempo real. En ese sentido, el presente texto señala la importancia de la función del geólogo y las herramientas de campo que utiliza para la exploración y la definición del modelo geológico en la mina Pierina. Así para la digitalización del mapeo geológico utiliza el programa AutoCad, en el caso de mapeo de taladros para voladura emplea un Colector de Datos que posee una hoja de calculo que permite recoger datos del tipo de alteración, porcentaje de arcillas, dureza y tipo de mineralización. Finalmente, la información que genera el geólogo de mina es útil para diferentes usuarios ya que sirve para mejorar el cálculo de reservas, manejar el control eficiente del minado de mineral y desmonte, así como generar el soporte geológico a los geotecnistas responsables del estudio de estabilidad de taludes del tajo abierto, así como desde el punto de vista ambiental es posible definir zonas con potencial de generar drenaje ácido de rocas.

"Surface coal mining in West Virginia has supplied energy to the eastern coast of the United States for over a century. Over the years, the coal mining industry has been forced to adapt as societal demands regarding health, safety, and environmental impacts have changed. More recent pressure has called for another iteration of change: long-term post-mining sustainability. The research discussed in this paper investigates one potential solution - or component of a solution - to improve the sustainability of surface coal mining in West Virginia: post-mining wind power. The paper begins with an introduction to the Appalachian region of the U.S. and the role that mining has played in its history, followed by a discussion of the need for sustainable mining and how post-mining wind power may help fulfill it. Data processing methodology of field data from monitoring locations is then explained. The results are then used to estimate the electrical output of a wind turbine. This data is then utilized in a case study discussion of one of the monitored sites. The paper concludes with an analysis of the broader implications of the research and a discussion of future work."

O objetivo deste trabalho é demonstrar o desenvolvimento da compensação de sopro no Alto-Forno 3 da CSN durante as manobras dos regeneradores para o ciclo de sopro com o incremento da vazão do ar soprado vindo do moto-soprador. Para a realização deste trabalho utilizou-se a metodologia DMAIC. Na apresentação do resultado final serão demonstrados valores alcançados em torno de 60% de redução da pressão da base do alto-forno com o desenvolvimento e por consequência, um aumento de sua produtividade.

The potential application of fluidized beds in several sectors of the ferroalloy industry is promising. They can be used in the direct reduction of iron ores to produce a feed for steelmaking, in the reduction of manganese dioxide to produce a lesser oxide for feeding to smelters, in the preheating of chromite for the production of ferrochrome, and in the calcining and pre-reduction of nickel laterites for the production of ferronickel. This paper discusses the potential of fluidized beds in theses processes and highlights the advantages of the technology over other technologies, such as rotary kilns. Two primary advantages?(1) that fluidized beds can treat fine materials and (2) that fluidized beds can be integrated with smelters in a way that allows for more efficient use of energy?may well see the technology gain prominence as more deposits of lower grade are mined and industries strive to use their resources more efficiently. In discussing the potential of the technology in the ferroalloy industry, this paper focuses on the application of fluidized beds in the smelting of chromite, nickel laterites, and manganese ores. Central to the successful operation of this technology is a knowledge of how particle properties influence the behaviour and design of fluidized beds.

La zone 1 de la mine Doyon (zone altérée), se situe à l?extrémité sud de la mine et est constituée d?une série de veines étroites à fort pendage et ayant des épontes de très faible résistance. Les épontes supérieure et inférieure ont des valeurs de RQD variant de 0 à 20 lors que les valeurs de RQD de la zone minéralisée se situent entre 20 et 40. Le minerai de la zone 1 s?étend sur environ 300 m de long et sur 900 m de profondeur avec des épaisseurs variant entre 2 et 15 m. Des méthodes de minage long-trous y sont utilisées avec des accès longitudinaux ou transverses selon l?épaisseur de la zone minéralisée. L?exploitation de la zone 1 a débuté en 1991 et plus de 1,7 millions de tonnes auront été extraites à la fin 2008. Plusieurs techniques y ont été testées que ce soit au niveau du développement ou du minage afin d?améliorer la sécurité des travailleurs, de réduire la dilution des chantiers et d?en augmenter la récupération. Différentes modifications ont été apportées aux dimensions et orientations des galeries, aux patrons de forage, aux techniques de sautages, au support de terrain, à la séquence de minage et aux méthodes de remblayage. Many types of explosives have made their contribution as technology has moved forward. One of the best known was dynamite, which for many years was the mainstay of explosives users. Although dynamite had many advantages over its predecessors, it had the principal shortcomings of being somewhat hazardous to handle and was known as a headache producer.

"INTRODUCTION The relative value of the various individual physical and chemical properties of coke as a measure of its performance in the blast furnace as aroused considerable controversy but it is generally agreed that uniformity in these properties is extremely important if maximum mum pip-iron production is to be attained. The control of,the bulk density or weight per cubic feet of the coal charge in the coke ovens is a major, and frequently overlooked, factor in producing a uniform product and in efficient operation of the coke plant.This report presents a brief discussion of the general problem of bulk-density control and the results of tests on samples of coke-oven charges from several operating plants experiencing difficulties due to lack of adequate control. These tests covered the effect of moisture and oil content on the bulk density of the coal. Some tests on the effect of a wetting agent and furnenous of gained were also made. A description of the methods used to determine the bulk density of the coals studied in this investigation and of the methods used to apply oil to the coal at byproduct-coke plants are included in this product. No theoretical analysis of the data presented in this report, because the primary purpose of the investigation was to obtain data of immediate practical value to the plants concerned."
