Sin embargo, tanto el desatado y sostenimiento manual desarrollaron un estréss y desgaste de energía en el trabajador. En este sentido, el presente trabajo señala una nueva forma de realizar tales operaciones en el ciclo de minado de la empresa Milpo a fin de garantizar la seguridad física de los trabajadores y equipos.

"El presente texto revisa el origen y distribución de los metales raros como parte de un proyecto de recuperación de subproductos de valor comercial en la fundición de La Oroya. Para ello se reeexaminan ocho minerales raros (bismuto, selenio, teluro, cadmio, talio, indio, bismuto, indio de alta pureza), cuya composición de elementos raros se registra en la concentración de algunos productos o residuos. Estos minerales son del grupo del cobre Chalcópirita, Enargita, Tetrahedrita, Bornita y Chalcosita; del plomo: la Galena, Jamesonita y Gratonita, y la Esfalerita que proporciona el zinc. Los concentrados y minerales que entran al proceso de fundición se reparten en tres circuitos principales: cobre, plomo y zinc. Los circuitos de los primeros están ligados entre sí por el sistema de Cottrelles y los procedimientos de las mismas fundiciones, mientras que el último actúa de forma independiente. Por último, es competencia del Departamento de Investigaciones, la recuperación de dichos subproductos a través del proceso de concentración y fundición, como de a búsqueda nuevos métodos en el campo minero y metalúrgico. "

Acid soluble calcium is depleted in drainage sediments from hydrothermal alteration centres in the Coromandel Peninsula. The routine analysis of acid-soluble calcium on drainage samples is an economical and effective technique for outlining hydrothermal alteration centres in volcanic terrains.

Basic parameters affecting the stability of foams have been studied. We used the thin film pressure balance (TFPB) technique of Scheludko and Exerowa (1959) to measure the surface forces in foam films stabilized with various frothers such as pentanol, octanol, MIBC, and PPG. The results were compared with the froth stabilities measured using the shake tests and the film elasticity calculated using the model developed by Wang and Yoon (2006). It was found that the froth stability is controlled by both film elasticity and surface forces (or disjoining pressure), the relative contributions from each changing with frother concentration and type.

Laboratory experiments were performed on a Brazilian diatomite from Bahia State to produce an industrial product for use as a filter aid. Bench and pilot plant tests were conducted consisting of: diatomite desegregation, organic matter and clay removal, filtration, drying and calcination. Calcination temperature and sodium carbonate addition influenced diatomite particle size distribution. Optimum filtration rates for calcined products were obtained at 900°C and 47 min. residence time with 3% (w/w) of sodium carbonate addition, and resultant products met specifications imposed on filter aids.

Magnesium and its alloys have long been characterized as possessing limited capacity for mechanical forming at atmospheric temperatures prior to rupturing despite their outstanding performances in this respect at elevated temperatures. Responsible for this behavior are the fundamental facts that these hexagonal-type metals have comparatively few slip elements at low temperatures for any extensive deformation and that, at high temperatures, additional slip elements become operative, thus enhancing greater plasticity under strain. The transitionai point has been set at 2 25°C by Schmidl for single crystals, and at 250°C by Morel1 and Hanawalt² for extruded magnesium metal. In a recent X-ray investigation on poly-crystalline magnesium-alloy sheets, Barrett and Haller3 have revealed that, below the transitional tempelature, the initial plastic deformation proceeds mostly by a twinning action; that, above such a temperature, the action is mostly by slip. The deep-drawing performance of the magnesium + 1.5 pct alloy sheet† over a wide range of temperatures has been investigated by Weber and Vanden Berg,' and their results are presented in Fig I. It should be noted from this work that a maximum drawability of about 25 pct at room temperature has been obtained on this alloy under the conventional deep-drawing operations. For the same alloy, it is now possible to augment the cold drawability to about 40 pct by a process to be disclosed. Hitherto, this value has been obtained only by deep-drawing the alloy at around 230°C. That greater plastic flow is attainable at atmospheric temperatures on magnesium under certain deformational techniques was discovered by the authors6 in their analyses of plastic-deformational behaviors of pure magnesium. This fact is best illustrated in Fig 2 from the Har-greaves analysis6 performed by the authors under two different modes of loading. For direct test, a separate unstrained specimen was used for each load duration, whereas for the integrated test the same specimen was employed for all the five intermittent loadings so that the load duration was made additive throughout the investigation. The higher plastic flow-rate at room temperature, as designated by the Har-greaves constant S, was obtained by the integrated or intermittent loading procedure. The Oatman District produced approximately 2.2 x 10 6 ounces of gold and 0.8 x 10 ounces of silver between 1897 and 1942. A total of 3.8 x 10 tons of ore averaging 0.58 O/T gold and 0.17 O/T silver was extracted from eight major orebodies and a number of lesser deposits. Oatman lies at the center of a trachyte-latite-rhyolite volcanic complex which contains at least one resurgent caldera. The orebodies are typical epithermal quartz-calcite + adularia lode deposits which are very deficient in sulfur. Ore deposition has occurred within dilatant zones on faults which radiate from a common point within-the complex. Fischer-Watt Mining approached the Oatman District with an integrated exploration program utilizing four basic procedures to define the characteristics of past productive areas the results of which were applied to unexplored portions of the vein system. These procedures, listed in their order of usefulness, in defining known and prospective mineralized zones are: vein contouring, detailed alteration mapping, fluid inclusion temperature determinations, and geochemical sampling.

Gold was first discovered in the Shotover by Thomas Arthur in 1862. He left his job as a shearer and soon there were up to 3000 miners working over the length of the river. Some parts were extremely rich and a few early miners recovered as much as 300 ounces in a day. From these early days of hand working the operations progressed through to hydraulic elevating once water races and pipes were installed after the Skippers road was completed about 1890. The riverbed was worked in paddocks with .the gravel being sluiced to a central suction which elevated the material over a sluice box. Use of this system continued intermittently through until 1977 when Joe Schieb retired û the last of the hydraulic miners. Many bucket ladder dredges worked on the lower Shotover near Big Beach where the Sew Hoy family recovered a lot of gold. Just after 1900, at least three worked further upstream, one on the beach where Shotover Jet now operates and one further up below the Moonlight. All the sections for this were transported in over the Moonlight Track and the boiler, steam engine and bucket ladder are still sitting at the edge of the river. up near Maori Point a dredge operated from Dredge Slip upstream. Records are poor on these dredges but they all suffered from the frequent floods and large boulders which damaged the bucket line. The last dredging attempt was about 1930 when a suction dredge was constructed on Maori Beach. This failed as seems to be normal for most suction dredging ventures. The river can drop to very low levels in the middle of a dry summer, and in winter when the water is tied up in the mountains as ice and snow. During 1863 when heavy rain melted snow in the high country, the river rose 35 feet overnight and drowned many miners camped on the banks. The ever present risk of flooding dominates the method of working and plant design.

During the months of April and May 1992, the Phelps Dodge Hidalgo smelter underwent a major turnaround. This was the third such turnaround in the life of the facility which was commissioned in 1976. During the third furnace campaign, the smelter processed 5.2 million tons of concentrate producing 2.6 billion pounds of anode copper over a 7.5 year period. The critical path on the fifty-nine (59) day turnaround schedule was the reconstruction of the Outokumpo flash furnace which integrated some modifications with standard rebuild practices. Modifications included incorporation of horizontal cooling jackets throughout the furnace settler as well as the installation of castable refractory in the reaction and uptake shafts.

This paper presents the development of lightweight concrete (LWC) incorporating pumice aggregate and volcanic ash (VA) based ASTM Type I blended cement (PVAC). Fresh and mechanical properties of LWC mixtures such as slump, air content, compressive strength, tensile strength, density and modulus of elasticity are described. The durability characteristics are investigated by drying shrinkage (DS) and water permeability. The investigation suggests the production of LWCs incorporating blended PVAC and VPA having satisfactory strength/durability characteristics for structural applications. The use of PVAC induces the beneficial effect of reducing drying shrinkage and water permeability. Development of such non- expensive and environmentally friendly LWCs with acceptable strength and durability characteristics is extremely helpful for the sustainable development and rehabilitation of volcanic disaster areas around the world.

The geology of the Muskeg River Oil Sands Mine is described to demonstrate how geologic modeling aided in resource evaluation and material characterization during the feasibility and construction stages. Bitumen is hosted in the clastic sediments of the Cretaceous McMurray Formation which is informally divided into members representing the fluvial, estuarine and marine environments of this transgressive sequence. Lithofacies mapping of drill core provides further detail to classify materials as resource type, for extraction suitability and for construction suitability. Geologic interpretation provides tools for the engineers to produce effective mine plans and for the operators to execute them during mine development.

The design of a mine should aim to optimise the market value by maximising revenues whilst minimising costs. In open pit mining, the nature of the extraction technique translates this objective into the maximum recovery of reserves while minimising waste extraction subject to technical, economical and safety constraints. Since the introduction by Lerchs and Grossman, in 1965, of a model that is now considered a classic in the area, open pit design has reached a level of maturity and acceptance by industry. These models are being used on a regular basis by designers and planners.This paper proposes a new alternative model for open pit design. It is based on genetic algorithms (GA) and exploits a reduction of the number of decision variables of the more traditional techniques. The novel approach provides more flexibility than traditional models; it can also be extended to consider planning problems that traditional open pit design models are not capable of handling. The algorithm has been designed for two dimensional problems and tested in a simple instance. The results obtained in this simple test are encouraging and are a good supporting argument for the development of a GA model capable of handling three-dimensional (3D) instances. The model presented in this paper is just a first step towards a full GA to solve the pit design problem and it is believed that novel tools like the one presented herein could become great allies in tackling challenging problems in open pit design, an illustration of such a challenging problem is presented and discussed.

"Gold and silver cyanide complexes are presently desorbed from activated carbon by means of hot caustic elutions. These solutions may or may not contain additional sodium cyanide. There are several parameters which affect the rate of stripping. Some of these include pH, ionic strength, and temperature. (1) Stripping is conducted in recirculating (ZADRA) or once through (AARL) circuits.This paper describes the development of a new chemical eluant which significantly increases the rate of stripping of both gold and silver cyanide complexes from activated carbon. Two case history applications are also described.INTRODUCTIONAdditional cyanide is used in strip circuits in order to prevent its depletion which could lead to precipitation of base metals or lead to a change in the nature of the gold cyanide complex to one which does not strip as easily. (2)The strip circuits that are able to function efficiently without the use of cyanide are mostly those where the carbon is acid-cleaned after stripping.Once the minimum cyanide requirement to maintain the complexes in their proper state are fullfilled, any futher incremental increase in the level of cyanide will have no bearing on the rate of stripping. (3)DEVELOPMENT OF THE NEW ELUANTGeneral DiscussionVarious carboxylated materials were investigated including octanoic acid, polycarboxylic acid (various molecular weights), salicylic acid, polymaleic acid, acetic acid. benzoic acid, terephthalic acid, 4, bi-phenyl carboxylic acid, phosphoric acid and stearic acid.The initial work was done on medium activiiy, non acid-cleaned carbon. The silver to gold ratio on the carbon varied greatly.Two different blanks were used. The first was an elution using a 2% caustic and 0.4% cyanide solution while the second was a 2% caustic elution."

As Ligas com efeito de Memória de Forma (LMF) são metais funcionais que podem recuperar grandes deformações, superiores a 5%, quando submetidos a carregamento mecânico e/ou aquecidos. Este fenômeno ainda surpreende pesquisadores e engenheiros de projetos, materiais e processos. Esses metais possibilitam o desenvolvimento de atuadores termomecânicos capazes de gerar esforço mecânico com o bloqueio da recuperação de forma. Inúmeros são os processos para obtenção dessas LMF, cada um com sua particularidade e limitação específica. Nesse contexto, este trabalho avalia o efeito do reprocessamento pela técnica Plasma Skul Push-Pull (PSPP) e do tratamento térmico de solubilização nas propriedades térmicas de transformação de fase de uma LMF 55,1Ni-44,9Ti (% em peso) obtida originalmente pelo processo de fusão por indução a vácuo (VIM). Para isso, a LMF foi refundida com uma tocha de plasma e vazada sob pressão em quatro moldes metálicos distintos (aço, bronze, alumínio e cobre). As técnicas de caracterização térmica Calorimetria Diferencial de Varredura (DSC) e Resistência Elétrica em função da Temperatura (RET) foram utilizadas para avaliar o efeito desse reprocessamento e do subsequente tratamento térmico de solubilização a 850°C em diferentes tempos. Verificou-se que a injeção em molde metálico proporciona uma significativa redução nas temperaturas de transformação de fase, da ordem de 30°C em relação ao material bruto obtido por VIM. Por fim, foi possível concluir que a LMF NiTi reprocessada mantém a transformação de fase mesmo após tratamentos de solubilização a 850°C em tempos mais longos (8 h), contrariamente ao material originalmente obtido por VIM.

China’s vibrant economic growth is built on coal, the source of two thirds of the country’s electricity. Over 95 percent of China’s coal is mined underground with the average mining depth at 410 m and in-creasing at 10 m per year; today, the deepest Chinese coal mines have exceeded 1,000 m. With increasing mining depths, there are greater challenges including increased methane emissions and spontaneous combustion. According to the government, nearly half of China’s coal mines are classified as gassy (with specific gas content at least 10 m3/mt). Coalbed methane (CBM) is a clean energy source. However, only a small percentage of the methane is captured, and the rest is vented directly to the atmosphere. This paper describes China’s CBM resource, its production and utilization.
