Laser slapper detonators are the next generation detonator under development at the Detonations Systems Group at Los Alamos National Laboratory and function very similarly to an electrical slapper. A fiber optic transmits a laser pulse to ablate a thin metal film. This film, or flyer as it is commonly called, is launched through a short barrel to km/s speeds. The flyer shock loads or slaps a high density pressing of secondary explosive, setting off a detonation therein. Laser slapper detonators afford a number of safety advantages over other conventional detonators. Most important they require very high peak laser powers to operate, orders of magnitude larger than possible sources of natural or man-made accidental stimulus. Because light is transported over fiber optics, laser slappers avoid many of the electrical hazards associated with detonators. Use of insensitive, secondary explosives makes these detonators safer to handle, manufacture, transport, and deploy.

I. SITUATION AND SURROUNDINGS. THE Promontorio mine is situated at the northern end of the Sierra San Francisco de Coneto, in the town of Promontorio, Partido of El Oro, State of Durango, Mexico. As shown in the sketch-map, Fig. 1, the nearest railroad station is Chinacates on the Mexican International Railroad, 82 miles north of the city of Durango. The mine is 16 miles north of the station by air-line. It is reached by means of a good wagon-road which first crosses the Guatimapé Plain, passing the ranches of San Antonio and San Julian, to Estacion-a distance of about 15.5 miles-and then entering the mountains crosses the Sierra to Promontorio-a further distance of 11.5 miles¬making in all a distance of 27 miles by road from railroad to mine. Promontorio is just beyond the summit of the range, at an elevation of about 8,000 ft. above sea-level, or 1,350 ft. above the Chinacates station. The Castillo de San Francisco, the highest peak in the Sierra, has an altitude of 10,000 ft., and the Promontorio road crosses the summit of the ridge at an elevation of 9,000 ft. by a pass just below this peak known as the Puerto del Almagre. The Promontorio mill is situated at Santa Ives, 2 miles by tram or 3 miles by wagon-road to the north of Promontorio and about 600 ft. lower. The Sierra San Francisco de Coneto decreases in height towards the north and west till it comes to an end at the Melchor Arroyo on the ranches of Melchor and Ramos. Beyond this arroyo another range, the Sierra de la Candela, begins. This paper describes operating gains resulting from standardizing operating and maintenance practices to improve the performance of the pebble crushing circuit at he Empire Concentrator. Past efforts have led to improved operating time but no additional throughput gains. New Operating standards and checklists were developed and introduced. The content and frequency of the review process indicators was then changed to take advantage of the new practices resulting in an increased feed rate and availability through the pebble crushing circuit.

With the end of the official apartheid legislation in the early 1990s, South Africa was heralded as a non-racial country. However, racial awareness has been reintroduced into the country with the Affirmative Action and Black Economic Empowerment legislation. Gender and racial transformation are the current order of the day. All organizations are required to reflect in their make-up the demographics of the population as soon as possible. Scorecard shave been drawn up to measure the rate of transformation for gender and race in organizations. The mining industry in South Africa has been in the forefront of this transformation legislation and scorecards. This paper seeks to show the effect of gender and racial transformation on mining engineering education and professionalism by analysing the changing demographics of graduating mining students at both the South African universities offering a degree in mining engineering, the professional registration of mining engineers with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), and the membership of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM), the vocational institute for mining engineers. It also demonstrates the absurdity of gender and racial quotas based solely on the demographics of the current population of the country. This paper shows the degree to which mining engineering has transformed in both gender and race.

The ferroalloys industry has generated historically substantial solid waste. The accumulated waste causes serious problems to the environment. However, it is possible to transform the solid waste into an environment-friendly resource to serve the human being. Consequently, the construction of plants that are ?environment-friendly? and that accommodate ?recycling? has become a target of most ferroalloy producers in the world to ensure sustainable development. This paper introduces the practice of Shanxi Jiaocheng Yiwang Ferroalloys Works, the biggest manganese metal producer in China, in the development of an ?environment-friendly and recycling? process. The process includes power generation using coal gangue, waste from local coal mines; hollow bricks manufacture using slag and fly ash from the power station; cement production using slag from ferroalloy smelting; recovery of ferrous and non-ferrous elements in the dust from the furnace gas cleaning system; application of silica dust in construction and so on. The final objective of the plant is to realize zero discharge of solid waste. The profit of the ?environment-friendly and recycling? process compensates in part for the operational expense of the environment facilities.

The presence of appreciable quantity of clay mineral in Indian hematite ore needs an attrition technique using screw scrubber in the beneficiation circuit to remove the ultrafine clays and avoid downstream operational problems. Spectroscopic analysis revealed that iron ore samples obtained from the Barbil region of Odisha contain a high amount of silica and alumina in the form of clay minerals (e.g., kaolinite) contributed as a loss on ignition (LOI) in the iron-making process. Iron ore fines of below 10 mm size were subjected to a laboratory-scale screw scrubber, and the effectiveness of scrubbing as well as the pelletization of the scrubbed product was investigated. The screw scrubber in the beneficiation circuit helps to remove the clay minerals, causes an increase in iron values from 63.65% Fe(T) to 66.18%Fe(T), with improved physical (CCS of 325 kg/pellet) and metallurgical (RDI of 2.24%) pellet properties.

"The National Safety Competition of 1930, the seventh annual contest conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines to promote safety in the mines and quarries of the United States, has been concluded, and the five winners of the bronze trophies, The Sentinels of Safety,' which are provided by the Explosives Engineer magazine and awarded annually for the most excellent safety records, have been determined by the committee of award. One trophy was awarded to an anthracite mine in Pennsylvania, one to a bituminous coal mine in the same State, one to an iron-ore mine in Michigan one to a gypsum mine in Ohio, and one to an iron-ore opencut mine in Michigan.These trophies were awarded to the companies for having the smallest loss of time from accidents in proportion to the total number of man-hours worked by all employees at their mine or quarry. Honorable mention was awarded to each mine or quarry that ranked second, third, fourth, or fifth in its own ground and to all plants that were operated without a lost-time accident during the contest year. Eighty-four out of 337 plants that competed for the trophies were operated without an accident that disabled an employee beyond the day on which the accident occurred.Under the contest rules, all mines and quarries were divided into five groups, four of the groups representing different classes of underground mining operations (anthracite, bituminous coal, metallic ore, and nonmetallic mineral), and the fifth group repre-senting the quarrying or opencut mining of minerals whether metallic or nonmetallic. Twenty-seven mines were included in the anthracite group, 68 in the bituminous group, 52 in the metal group, 24 in the nonmetallic-mine group, and 166 in the quarry and opencut-mine group. The total of 337 mines and quarries was 26 more than the number of plants that completed the contest during the previous year.The committee of award which determined the winners of the contest was composed of seven members, all known throughout the mineral industry but not connected with the United States Bureau of Mines. The committee included W. H. Cameron, managing director of the National Safety Council; William Green, president of the American Federation of Labor; James F. Callbreath, Secretary of the American Mining Congress; T. T. Read, Vinton professor of mining of Columbia University and editor of Mining and Metallurgy; C. B. Huntress, executive secretary of the National Coal Association; A. J. Curtis, assistant to the general manager of the Portland Cement Association; A. T. Goldbeck, director of the bureau of engineering of the National Crushed Stone Association."

INTRODUCTION The results of the Japanese dissective investigations have [l-4] transformed our understanding of how the blast furnace operates. These studies revealed an internal structure of the furnace burden with five main zones, as illustrated in Figure 1. In the granular zone the charged material retains its structure whereas in the cohesive zone the iron ore particles are at advanced stages of reduction and form a semi-molten mass with a relatively high flow resistance. In the active coke zone molten iron and slag flow through a matrix of loosely packed coke. The raceway is a relatively small void space generated by displacement of coke due to the hot blast momentum, whilst the hearth is packed with coke, slag and molten iron. [ ] It is now well appreciated that furnace control is largely achieved and maintained by using the burden charge distribution to determine the gas glow distribution within the furnace and, hence, the shape and extent of the cohesive zone. In fact, Wakayama et a1 [5] of Nippon Steel Corporation state that optimum furnace operation is synonomous with the formation of a desirable cohesive zone shape, which in turn is almost solely determined by the burden charge distribution and its mechanical properties [6]. Much of the development work on operating furnaces since the dissective investigations has been oriented towards the identification of external furnace measures which reliably predict the shape of the cohesive zone. Currently the most popular measures are top gas temperature, velocity and CO/CO, ratio profiles [5]. More recently pressure distributions as evaluated from a series of wall measurements down the height of the furnace are also being utilised [7] to identify the position and shape of the cohesive zone. A great deal of emphasis has been placed upon achieving a consistent quality in the burden charge materials, establishing a suitable set of operating conditions and only making changes when forced to, ie., the operation for some reason moves outside a desired operating range or the production requirements change. Operational control schemes based upon this philosophy (eg., Kawasaki's GO-STOP system [8]) have been remarkably successful at achieving both high production rates and relatively low fuel costs. Mathematical models have long been used as tools to assist in the analysis of the blast furnace process. Although, the models have been useful in post-operative analysis and for identifying trends, etc., they have not proved reliable for detailed design criteria or as the basis for effective control schemes. A large underground cavern with dimensions of 25m × 175m × 49m (W×L×H) was excavated in sandstone and siltstone to house 4 units of hydropower generator and was completed in 2000. In feasibility study stage, the property of the siltstone which governs the ceiling of the cavern was questionable due to slaking phenomenon. Parameters on rock properties for design were back calculated from actual ground response measured from a trial excavation. For safety of construction, comparison between prediction and actual ground responses during excavation had proceeded. The prediction was provided by means of PHASES and PHASE2 software and the actual rock response was detected by the provided monitoring system.

A review is undertaken of existing mathematical models of compaction process in roll press. The example of plane-strain, plane-stress model is presented together with comparisons between computed and experimentally recorded pressure distribution in roll nip region. Next, the discrepancies between predicted and measured values are discussed and practical method based on experimental optimization of compaction process using laboratory roll press is proposed. Examples of the selection of optimum roll press operating parameters for calcium oxide fines, sodium chloride and iron oxide dust are presented to illustrate advantages of the method. Finally scale up procedure is discussed for estimating the performance of commercial size roll press based on the data collected on laboratory size equipment.

"Placer Dome Inc.'s Dome Mine is located in South Porcupine, Ontario and has been in production since 1910. In the past, the mill leach circuit was preceded by preaeration and primary filtration circuits. These circuits were operated to overcome the effects of pyrrhotite in the ore which reacts with cyanide to form cyanates and thiocyanates and also consumes oxygen.In early 1989, primary filters were by-passed for an extended period. Actual plant results showed no affect on gold recovery or cyanide consumption so the circuit was left off-line permanently with significant cost savings.In 1990 it was determined that considerable savings could be realized underground if backfill storage facilities were located in the mill. It was decided to convert the preaeration pachucas to backfill storage tanks on a trial basis. The trial proved successful with no effect on recovery or significant increase in reagent consumption occurring due to the elimination of the preaeration circuit. The converted pachucas worked well as backfill storage tanks.Modifications such as these have helped to keep the Dome's millings costs among the lowest of Canadian gold producers."

"A graphical method to assess the size reduction by grinding is presented and illustrated with data collected from laboratory grinding tests and industrial grinding circuits. The method lies between the graphical comparison of size distributions and the population balance model. The method is easy to apply and provides a quick way to compare grinding mill performances under various operating conditions and processed ores. The application of the method to industrial mills shows that a grinding mill operation could present an invariant behaviour that can be exploited for simulation purposes.INTRODUCTIONThe size reduction of particles by grinding has been studied for decades and several books were published on the subject. Most of the recent studies focus on the modelling of the ball, semiautogenous and autogenous grinding mills operation (Napier-Munn et al., 1996) because accurate simulators can be used for design, optimization and control. Although the development of realistic simulators is progressing, the trial and error method is still used by many operators to identify optimum operating conditions for a grinding machine.Laboratory tests allow the characterization of the material submitted to grinding and the analysis of various operating conditions, such as ball size or shape, mill speed and slurry concentration of solids, on particle size reduction. Similar tests can be conducted in a plant, but results are often difficult to analyze due to errors associated with sampling and sensor accuracy. This paper presents a graphical method to assess the degree of size reduction carried out by a grinding machine. The paper consists of three sections. The first section describes the method and the following sections illustrate the method with data taken from laboratory and industrial grinding machines."

In this paper, the authors give a brief overview of the current practice guidelines and tools for the seismic design of sheet pile quay walls, emphasizing how the design guidelines are lacking when the existing structure performance evaluation is required to meet performance-based criteria. Relying on recent experience they explain how the existing practices can be amended to focus more on performance evaluation as opposed to design. An example is given of an old sheet pile quay wall analyzed and evaluated for its performance according the recent performance criteria devised for Californian Marine Oil Terminals.

"IntroductionThe Ancient Egyptians recovered gold from the mud in the bottom of ponds by having teams of maidens sit around the pond dipping goose feathers dipped in grease into the mud. The gold would preferentially stick to the oily surface and was periodically washed off to give a gold concentrate. This was a forerunner of today's flotation processes.In Greek mythology Jason and the Argonauts pursued the Golden Fleece, which was a primitive form of gravity concentrate produced when gold ore slurry was passed over a sheeps fleece. The heavy gold settled and was caught in the fleece, producing a rich concentrate that allowed Jason & Company to perform the first recorded case of highgrading. The process was a forerunner of todays shuiceboxes used in placer mining.From these simple beginnings, gold metallurgy has progressed to a state where very complex flowsheets are proposed, sometimes to perform a simple metallurgical task. Figure (i) shows a hypothetical flowsheet to identify the range of unit processes that might be brought to bear on a refractory ore. Newmont?s Twin Creeks Mine, located in northern Nevada, is producing gold ore from surface mining operations. The ore is currently processed at three different on site facilities depending on the ore type and the grade. The processing facilities operate under stringent geochemical blending constraints that must be met from mine ore deliveries and off site sourced ore. To analyze various strategic options, the technical team utilizes the mathematical optimization approach. However, due to the size and the complexity of the operation, there are unique challenges in optimizing life of mine production scheduling. This paper describes those challenges and the methodology developed to take advantage of different scheduling software systems that effectively compensate each other and result in reasonable guidance. The paper also describes how those scheduling results are reflected in detailed mine plan and cost estimate work.

The use of base grouting (tip grouting) to enhance the axial capacity of drilled shaft foundations can achieve improvements in economy and reliability for many types of projects and soil profiles. Recent experiences on a range of different construction projects in the Southeastern U.S. illustrate the most attractive opportunities for utilizing this technique and some limitations of the method. The quality assurance provided by measurements obtained during post grouting the pile toe is another important aspect favoring its use; the base grouting is shown to identify weaker piles and provide a means of remediating some deficiencies so that increased foundation reliability is achieved. This paper provides an overview of the methods used to evaluate and design for base grouted shafts along with lessons learned from several case histories.

"This preliminary paper provides a summary of lab and mill flotation investigations into the copper collector at two Canadian operations. The orebodies illustrated in these studies both contain mainly copper and zinc with uneconomic quantities of lead. Silver is also present as a secondary precious metal.Each mill has advanced to the extended mill trial stage with Uniflot SP129 as the sole copper collector. The preliminary metallurgical results have indicated higher copper circuit zinc and lead rejection is possible as shown in Case Study #2. In Case Study #1, improved zinc circuit metallurgy has been realized during all the Uniflot copper circuit collector trials. A slight increase in silver recovery has also been observed in the extended trials at both operations. INTRODUCTIONThe Canadian base metal industry is presently going through a rationalization period in response to low metal prices and low grade ore bodies. The response from flotation mills has been to reduce costs by incorporating new technologies such as energy efficient large cells, low moisture pressure filters and low steel consumption SAG mills. Other optimization strategies have been incorporated to get better metallurgical performance such as improved process control and monitoring techniques.The newer flotation plants have embraced many of the latest equipment innovations but they continue to incorporate off-the shelf reagents like xanthate and methylisobutylcarbinol (MIBC) . New collector chemistries have been mostly unsuccessful. Our approach incorporates the best of the old and new chemistry into proprietary formulations that match the application. We have found most single chemical formulations cannot meet the demands of the optimized modern flotation plant."
