The U.S. Code of Federal Regulations (Title 30) requires that a methane monitor be placed on every mining machine to continuously observe and record methane levels at the face. The monitor must provide a warning whenever methane levels are 1.0 percent or higher. An effective monitoring system will indicate a methane concentration of 1.0 percent on the mining machine before methane levels at the mining face reach 5.0 percent. Where the methane monitor is located on the mining machine is one of the most important factors that determines how effectively face methane levels can be predicted. Any change in the sampling location will result in a change in measured methane concentration. To protect the methanometer, it is usually located on the cutting boom at least 1 to 1.8 m (3 to 6 ft) outby the front cutting bits. A face ventilation system using blowing tubing was simulated in a full-scale test facility. Methane released from the face area was monitored at multiple locations on a model mining machine as well as locations near the face. Based on the relationship between concentrations measured on the machine and at the face, criteria were developed for selecting the best machine locations for monitoring methane. Recommendations are given for revising methane action levels for alternative sampling locations.

The deformation mechanisms of a iron-phosphorus alloys were compared at 20oand —196°C. Alloying with phosphorus increases the resistance to slip, but has little effect on the resistance to twinning. The stress for onset of twinning is nearly independent of temperature, but there is an increasing tendency for cleavage along (112) twin boundaries with decreasing temperature and increasing phosphorus content. FIVE iron-phosphorus alloys and one high-purity iron (0.004 pct C, 0.004 pct N, 0.05 pct O) were vacuum melted and cast, then homogenized for 6 hr at 1100oC and water-quenched. Single crystals were cleaved from the coarse grains produced in this manner. The hardness was measured* on polished (100) surfaces of the crystals at 20" and -196°C. Laue back-reflection patterns indicated a deviation of not more than 3 deg from coincidence of the {100} plane with the surface. The deformation mechanisms were studied by relief effects on the polished surfaces. Yield points in compression (0.5 pct offset) were measured with polycrystalline material. At 20°C the addition of phosphorus to a iron leads to a change from slip to twinning as the main deformation mechanism, Figs. 1(a), (b). Between 2 and 4 at. pct P slip and twinning occur simultaneously. In alloys with more than 4 at. pct P twinning is the main deformation mechanism and slip was observed only in the neighborhood of twin intersections. All cracks at 20oC were on (100) planes, some initiated by twins.' From measurements made at-196oC, hardness and yield points of all the alloys were nearly constant and the same as the hardness of high phosphorus alloys that deformed by twinning at 20°C, Figs. 2 and 3. In the high-purity iron, plastic deformation at -196°C occurred by both slip and twinning, but deformation in the iron-phosphorus alloys appeared to be entirely by twinning. In the high phosphorus alloys a large number of cracks formed along the (112) twin boundaries and at intersections of twins, in addition to the (100) cleavage, Fig. 1(c). This paper reviews the likelihood of instability occurring within coking coal cargoes from BHP CoalÆs northern Bowen Basin mines. In coal cargoes, initial moisture redistributes vertically towards the base, saturating the bottom layers unless the bilge wells are pumped regularly. There has been concern in some quarters that saturated coal in the basal layer may be prone to liquefaction, and if the vessel then rolls significantly in rough seas, overall sliding movement of the cargo might occur. However, a review of shipping accident statistics reveals that casualties relating to shifting of coal cargoes are quite rare, and have not occurred in modern large bulk carriers (>15 000 dwt). The moisture redistribution process has been analysed to quantify the extent of cargo saturation that may occur. Results indicate that the amount of redistribution increases with initial moisture content above a threshold of eight to nine per cent. However, the removal of water by pumping from the bilges is remarkably effective in reducing the extent of saturated coal (and therefore the possibility of cargo liquefaction and movement), and in controlling the average moisture content of the bottom layers of cargo. Stability analyses were then performed for deep sliding of a cargo with a saturated and liquefied base. These have confirmed that sliding of a cargo with a liquefied base during rough seas (20¦ roll angles) would require initial total moisture content exceeding 13 per cent, the hold half full or less (width/depth >3), and no bilge pumping so that height of the saturated zone is as deep as possible. Overall, the results indicate that coking coal cargoes from BHP CoalÆs northern Bowen Basin mines will be unlikely to suffer sliding or liquefaction failures when transported in modern large bulk carriers.

Barrick Gold recently implemented an oxygen roasting process to treat carbonaceous ore from its Goldstrike property in Nevada. One of the key project challenges was the design of the roaster gas cleaning system, which was driven by the requirements of a strict air permit and the need to achieve very high reliability. The roaster gas systems include multiple stages of wet particulate collection, a dual alkali SO2 scrubber, mercury scrubbing, CO oxidation and NOx reduction. This paper describes the gas system, the influence of regulations on project implementation, and performance of the system.

For the highrise buildings with deep foundstion of irregular plane shape, an appropriate calculate model to the heave of foundation soil after excavation is proposed and studied using analytic method and FEM (Finite Element Method) respectively to provide an effective way for solving this kind engineering problem. Also combined with the practice of construction deep foundation of Capital Mansion, calculation of the heave of foundation soil after excavation is given. Compared these results from above two methods with the results measured in situ, it is conformal on the whole, and the results by FEM are much closer with the measured.

In any earth-moving operation, more profit may be earned or lost by equipment scheduling than by any other single facet of the project. Many now-defunct earth movers would have survived the cost-profit squeeze had they followed an efficient, cost saving, equipment scheduling program. The ideal program would have every item of the equipment fleet working all of the time. In practice this ideal situation is not possible. Several basic methods of equipment scheduling, with an infinite number of minor variations, are used. The first approach is the use of a "minimum equipment fleet," of which all items or equipment are scheduled each working shift.

Rock burst is one of the most serious mining hazards, adversely affecting the safety, economy and productivity of mines. It is a sudden manifestation of the release of strain energy stored in the rock mass. At present, there is no universally accepted method for predicting the timing of the rock burst. However, if the seismically hazardous regions in mines can be identified before they are exposed to mining then precautionary measures can be planned before the work begins. A study was conducted in Sudbury Nickel Belt and an approach has been proposed to identify rock burst prone workings on the basis of (a) Rock properties and bursting indices (b) In-situ approaches (c) Geological features (d) Mining conditions (e) Observations during mining operations (f) Comparison and analogy with previous case histories of bursting. This approach will facilitate the judicious application of the burst control techniques to seismically hazardous areas.

Low-rank/oxidized coals respond poorly to oil agglomeration. Emulsification of kerosene in the presence of surfactants dramatically reduces the size of the kerosene droplets. While this dramatically reduces the amount of oil that is required for efficient agglomeration (down to 0.25-0.5%), more importantly, the surfactants entirely change the electrokinetic properties of the oil droplets and thus the interaction between oil droplets and coal particles. Consequently, kerosene cationic emulsions can efficiently agglomerate oxidized coal particles. The agglomerates obtained in such a process can still be recovered by screening. Surfactants can affect fine coal filtration very profoundly when used to emulsify the oil which is utilized to agglomerate coal prior to its filtration. This sequence is much more logical than the use of flocculants - highly hydrophilic polymers - as filtration additives to aid dewatering of flotation concentrates. Although such polymers flocculate coal particles, they also render coal surfaces hydrophilic and make reduction of the cake moisture content difficult.

Os aços inoxidáveis duplex possuem uma microestrutura austeno-ferrítica com fração média de cada fase de cerca 50%. A microestrutura duplex é responsável por melhorar as propriedades mecânicas do material. A soldagem destes aços é frequentemente uma operação crítica. O objetivo desse trabalho é analisar a influência do aporte térmico sobre a microestrutura de juntas soldadas do aço duplex SAF2205. As chapas de aço duplex 2205 foram soldadas pelo processo de soldagem GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding), variando apenas o aporte térmico. Após essa etapa, as chapas foram cortadas, preparadas para a análise metalográfica, difração de raio X (DRX) e ensaio de microdureza Vickers. As microestruturas do metal base (MB), da zona termicamente afetada (ZTA) e da zona fundida (ZF) foram caracterizadas nesse estudo. Foi verificado que quanto maior o aporte térmico menor a quantidade de ferrita e maior o crescimento de grão da austenita na região fundida. Os ensaios de microdureza mostraram que quanto maior o aporte térmico maior será a ZTA do material.

Este trabalho apresenta o estudo da influência do ciclo de resfriamento em discos cerâmicos produzidos pelo processo de moldagem por injeção em baixa pressão (MIBP). Foram injetados discos utilizando uma suspensão cerâmica com 86% em peso de Alumina (Al2O3) e 14% em peso de veículo orgânico e com dimensões de Ø80x3 mm. Três condições de resfriamento foram utilizadas para a fabricação dos discos cerâmicos: baixa taxa de resfriamento, alta taxa de resfriamento (ambos acionados após a injeção da suspensão cerâmica) e resfriamento contínuo durante todo o ciclo de injeção. Para avaliação foram considerados aspectos dimensionais (contração) e geométricos (planicidade e circularidade). Os resultados mostraram que a condição com baixa taxa de resfriamento obteve maior contração dimensional, maior desvio de planicidade, enquanto a alta taxa de resfriamento obteve uma contração intermediária e menor desvio de planicidade. Utilizando resfriamento contínuo as amostras apresentaram baixa contração devido a maior compactação da suspensão cerâmica na moldagem.

"Enormous deposits of gypsum of exceptionally high grade are readily accessible in southwestern Newfoundland. Coming large-scale production from one of these is resulting in renewed interest in deposits which have been known for more than a hundred and twenty years. General stratigraphy and structure of the Carboniferous rocks in which the gypsum occurs are de-scribed. The stratigraphic position of the basal gypsum-anhydrite zone is described. This massive evaporite horizon, which reaches a thickness of about 1,0001 feet, appears at Fishels-Heatherton, where it is largely undeveloped, and again on the nose of an anticline east of Flat bay, where a present production of 20,000 to 40,000 tons per annum is soon to be expanded to make it one of Canada's major producers. Detailed descriptions are given of the several types of gypsum, the relation of the gypsum and anhydrite, and the distribution of sodium chloride in the evaporite beds, and the bearing of all these on the origin of the gypsum are discussed. Brief reference is made to relation to world markets, mining and transportation, grade, and reserves."

Keywords: RH refining process, flow of molten steel, two-phase flow, gas holdup, circulation rate, mathematical modeling A three-dimensional mathematical model for the flow of the molten steel in the whole degasser during the RH refining process has been proposed and developed with considering the physical characteristics of the process, particularly the behaviors of gas-liquid two-phase flow in the up-snorkel and the momentum exchange between the two phases. The fluid flow fields and the gas holdups of liquid phases and others respectively in a 90 t RH degasser and its water model unit with a 1/5 linear scale have been computed using this model. The results showed that the flow pattern of molten steel in the whole RH degasser could be well modeled by the model. The liquid can be fully mixed during the refining process except the area close to the free surface of liquid and zone between the two snorkels in the ladle, but there is a boundary layer between the descending liquid stream from the down-snorkel and its surrounding liquid, which is a typical liquid-liquid two phase flow, and the molten steel in the ladle is not in a perfect mixing state. The lifting gas blown is rising mostly near the up-snorkel wall, which is more obvious under the conditions of a practical RH degasser, and the flow pattern of the bubbles and liquid in the up-snorkel is closer to an annular flow. The calculated circulation rates for the model unit at different lifting gas rates are in good agreement with the determined values.

"In April, 2014, Hecla's Greens Creek mill, near Juneau, Alaska, switched from sulphuric acid to the use of dissolved carbon dioxide for lead flotation circuit pH control. The Greens Creek mine uses paste backfill, in which mill tailings are mixed with cement and used to fill mined areas. Some backfill inevitably becomes part of mill feed during subsequent mining cycles, resulting in high feed pH levels and increased dissolved calcium in the lead flotation circuit. Sulphuric acid is traditionally used to lower pH in such cases but it produces undesirable side effects, including poorer lead-zinc separation and unstable froth. The amount of sulphuric acid used at Greens Creek was limited due to these effects, resulting in higher than target pHs when feed backfill content was high. Dissolved carbon dioxide can be added without these limitations so pH levels have been under much better control since the switch. Additionally, lead-zinc separation and froth characteristics have significantly improved.IntroductionThe Greens Creek Mine, owned by Hecla Greens Creek Mining is an underground mine located on Admiralty Island near Juneau, Alaska, producing silver, gold, lead and zinc in the form of lead and zinc flotation concentrates and a gravity gold concentrate (McDonald, Morgen & Hancock, 2012). The lead and zinc concentrates are produced in conventional flotation circuits preceded by a graphite removal flotation step.The underground mine utilizes cemented paste backfill, of which a certain amount is inevitably re-mined in later mining cycles and returned to the mill, mixed with fresh ore. The Portland cement used in the paste backfill is highly basic so that, from the point of view of the mill, the net effect is to introduce a good deal of lime to run-of-mine mill feed, producing a very high natural pH. This high pH needs to be lowered to obtain good metallurgical results."

Talc is used to remove stickies from pulp during paper recycling processes. It is well known that the interaction is controlled by the surface chemistry at the talc/water, sticky/water and talc/sticky interfaces. If the interfacial tensions are known, one can calculate the free energies of interaction and hence predict whether the stickies can be removed by talc. In the present work, the surface tensions of several different talc samples were determined using the acid/base theory. The information was then used to determine appropriate interfacial tensions, which in turn were used to determine the free energy of interaction between talc and stickies. It was found that the calculated free energies are much more negative than those between the stickies and other minerals such as calcium carbonate, bentonite clay and kaolin clays.

"BHP-Billiton’s Minera Escondida Limitada is one of the world’s largest copper producers. It treats a combined 88 million tons of copper ore per year through its two concentrators: Los Colorados and Laguna Seca. Over the past three years, metallurgical sampling has been performed at the Laguna Seca concentrator to calibrate both the JKSimMet and JKSimFloat grinding and flotation simulators. In the past, the calibrated simulators have been used to predict the effect of changes in operating conditions in the grinding and flotation circuits separately. To assist in the development of future processing options, predictions were required of the effect of changing grinding circuit conditions on flotation performance. This was achieved by using an integrated grinding and flotation simulation. The grinding circuit performance was predicted under different operating conditions (such as tonnage rate and product grind size) using JKSimMet, and these results were then used in JKSimFloat to predict the flotation performance for the new grinding circuit product. This combination of the simulators allows both the effects of residence time and grind size on flotation performance to be investigated.This paper presents the first combined grinding and simulation modelling and simulation case study using JKSimMet and JKSimFloat. The modelling and simulation methodologies for the grinding and flotation circuits are discussed along with the circuit simulations that were performed. The simulator predictions are presented in conjunction with independent laboratory results of the new operating conditions. The ability to predict flotation circuit performance based on changes in grinding circuit performance is also discussed. This methodology provides improved predictions of flotation circuit performance when grinding circuit changes (including grinding capacity increases) are made.INTRODUCTIONOver the past decade, the grinding and flotation research groups at the Julius Krutschnitt Minerals Research Centre - JKMRC (Brisbane, Australia), University of Cape Town (Cape Town, South Africa) and McGill University (Montreal, Canada) have been developing a methodology for optimising grinding and flotation plants using actual plant data together with semi-empirical sub-process models. The project is being conducted as part of the Australian Minerals Industry Research Association (AMIRA) P9 Project, titled “The Optimisation of Mineral Processes by Modelling and Simulation”. The project first commenced in 1962 and is currently in its “Nth” phase."

These modifications to the Redlich-Kwong equations for pure hydrogen and neon were developed after an unsuccessful attempt to generalize a modification technique previously developed for helium. New coefficients of the B terms were developed by minimizing the residuals. No changes were made in the coefficients of the A terms. For normal hydrogen, B was changed to [0.08063Tc PcT] for temperatures from 980 to 423° K and pressures up to 1,050 atm. The average deviation in Z was 0.36 percent with maximum deviations less than 1 percent for all but a few low-temperature points. For neon, B was changed to [PCT 0.1025T], for temperatures from 120° to 973° K and pressures up to 1,500 atm. The average deviation in Z was 0.34 percent with maximum deviations less than 1 percent for all but a few high-pressure and low-temperature points. Efforts to attain a lower temperature range to comparable accuracy with this type of modification were unsuccessful. In the range of applicability, these equations should be used with caution when calculating derived thermodynamic functions, such as the isobaric specific heat.

A novel concept involving the deployment of chemical stabilization has the potential to eliminate the need of slurry impoundments and significantly reduce the release of trace elements from the high surface area fine coal waste. The process involves mixing the fine waste generated from the underflow of a thickener operation with chemical stabilization agents to tie up the water and to create a solid waste material that can be discharged directly. Portland cement, sodium silicate, F type flyash, C type flyash and hydraulic lime were evaluated as stabilizing agents. A detailed experimental study has been conducted to identify the conditions that provide the maximum compressive strength within a short curing time. Results to date show the ability to achieve compressive strengths adequate for equipment to maneuver on using a Portland cement concentration of around 10% by weight. Quick-setting concrete was not found to enhance stabilization time and compressive strength.

Miners, like many skilled blue-collar workers, are not traditional learners. They have not generally been successful in classroom-type settings, preferring to learn on the job in a hands-on environment. U.S. miners are required to have annual safety training, but they rarely view this positively. In fact, it has been called “safety jail” by many of them, who regard it as a time to get a little extra sleep. The challenge then, was to find a way to develop effective safety training for these people, particularly in view of the fact that their work is among the most dangerous of all occupations. Miners are born story tellers. They share “near-miss” stories, stories about master miners they have known, and stories about how things used to be. These stories not only pass along information about what will happen if a miner fails to respect the mining environ-ment, they also instruct listeners in the culture of mining and the values it embraces. Stories, it seems, are a way to get safety messages to miners, especially inexperienced ones, and using older, wiser miners in these stories is an obvious choice. This paper will discuss how the training videos created to get safety messages to miners were developed, how “master miners” and story lines were chosen, and how the resulting videos have been received in the mining industry.

"Heath Steele Mines is a base metal producer situated near Newcastle, N.B. presently treating 3500 TPD of complex Cu-Pb-Zn ore. The ore consists of massive fine grained sulfides averaging I. 1% Cu, 1.6% Pb and 4.5% Zn.The original mill started in 1956 at 750 TPD and was successively expanded through 1500 to 3000 TPD in 1969. In 1972 an expansion to 4000 TPD was initiated. It was planned to obtain the maximum benefit from equipment and manpower by adding some process equipment, instrumentation, an on stream analyser, and a process control system. The benefits from this approach could be greater than normally expected, because of the complex metallurgy of this ore.IntroductionThe crushing plant is of conventional design with two 5 ½ ft, Symons cone crushers with the crushed ore screened to -7/8 inch on a 61 x 16 1 Al I is Chalmers vibrating screen and stored in four 1000 Ion bins. There are two para I lei grinding circuits, each one consisting of the following: one Rod Mill in open circuit, one Ball Mill in closed circuit with two 20"" Krebs cyclones, and one Ball Mill in closed circuit with three 15"" Krebs cyclones, Al I the Mills are 9' x 121 Al I is Chalmers Mills. The secondary cyclone overflow from each grinding circuit is thickened and combined to form flotation feed. The final product is 65% - 400 Mesh. Two regrind mills have been installed as part of the expansion."

"IntroductionHydraulics has been considered a science for thousands of years. Applications included water wheels, dam; and slice gates but today the term ""hydraulics"" commonly refers to ""power hydraulics"" in which fluid is used under controlled pressure to do work. The mining industry employee’s hydraulics in practically every aspect of its operations, on such equipment as trucks, front end loaders, LHD units, crushers and hydrostroke feeders. The many benefits of hydraulic drives such as ease of variable speed control, high power: weight ratio low envelope size of hydraulic actuators and ease of maintenance have been extensively developed in the pulp and paper, chemical, steel, and other basic industries, but until quite recently, concentrator operators have not taken advantage of the versatile methods of power transmission offered by hydraulic systems.After some preliminary testing at the Lynn Lake concentrator Sherritt Cordon Mines Limited installed several hydraulic system; at their Fox Mine concentrator to drive slurry pumps and conveyors. The systems used at Fox and the systems which will be installed at the Ruttan concentrator are briefly described in this paper. Since acceptance is based mainly on understanding a few basic principles of hydraulics system; including pumps, motors, circuitry and central methods are also presented in the paper.PRINCIPLES OF POWER HYDRAULICSBasicsHydraulic systems provide an uncomplicated, versatile means of power transmission.
