Cost analysis of chrome ore reduction is one of the important issues facing ferrochrome producers in today?s competitive environment. Much of this depends on quality and various ratios in the actual ore. The latter can have a direct bearing on electricity consumption and optimum efficiency of the furnaces. While the industry has been successful in reducing costs by designing larger and more efficient furnaces, the role of the optimum blend of ore has perhaps been given less emphasis. This paper will discuss the general specification and metallurgical characteristics of various chrome ores for producing high carbon ferrochromium on industrial scale. By analysing the results obtained from smelting, including chromium recovery and energy consumption, the determining parameters in total cost of ferrochromium i.e. chrome ore; reductant and energy consumption can be optimized. Our study is based on actual experiences obtained from Faryab Ferroalloy Plant over a period of approximately three years.

By redistribution of the cyanide [ ] the grinding circuit in direct proportion to the amount of surface area created, a more activated flotation feed in obtained.Monitoring the oxygen demand of the flotation feed and grinding mill discharge has proved useful in diagnosing metallurgical problems day to day operation."

The use of piled raft foundations for tall buildings has been increasing in this decade as it is an economical alternative to conventional piled foundations. Piled rafts are composite structures comprised of the piles, raft and soil and so soil-structure interaction is important in computing the behaviour of the foundation. In this paper, the behaviour of piled rafts subjected to non-uniform loadings will be examined where the raft is supported by piles of different lengths. Finite layer techniques are used for the analysis of the horizontally layered soils and finite element techniques are used for the analysis of the raft and piles. This method accounts for the soil-structure interaction and the lateral resistance of the soil on the piles and raft. Results provided from the present method are compared with the results of a full 3D finite element analysis.

Underground mining has yet to see an industry wide solution for control of their ventilation systems due to the complexity and sensitivity of the underground environment. Complexity arises from multi-level, multi-zone operations and sensitivity is associated with the impact that changes in equipment status and output have on air flows and quality throughout the mine. Our approach to solving this challenge incorporates system modeling and industrial control systems in a unified architecture. Although this approach can be applied to other processes and industries, this paper will cover the theoretical and practical aspects of an integrated model-control system (MCS) as it applies to underground mining ventilation.

The Trident Gold Deposit is centred on the historical Higginsville Mining Centre, between the world class gold centres of St Ives (+15 Moz) and Norseman (+6.5 Moz) in Western AustraliaÆs productive eastern goldfields. It lies towards the southern end of the Norseman-Wiluna Greenstone belt in the Archaean Yilgarn Craton. The current in situ resource for Trident is estimated at 840 000 ounces, with production to date in excess of 500 000 ounces.Trident is hosted primarily within a thick, weakly differentiated gabbro with subordinate mafic and ultramafic lithologies and comprises a series of north-northeast trending, shallowly north plunging ore zones. The deposit comprises two main mineralisation styles; thin, lode-style, nuggety laminated quartz veins (Athena and Artemis) that formed along major shear zones primarily at the contacts between the various mafic and ultramafic lithologies; and large wallrock-hosted ore-zones comprising sigmoidal quartz tensional vein arrays and associated metasomatic wall rock alteration (eastern zone, western zone and Apollo) hosted exclusively within the gabbro.The thin laminated quartz vein lodes are important to the Trident Gold Deposits production profile as they constitute 33 per cent of the metal from only 14 per cent of the tonnes. The delineation, grade estimation and extraction of these lodes require a disproportionate amount of geological and engineering input due to the small scale variability in width, grade and direction. "The Merensky Reef is a platinum group minerals (PGM) bearing reef in the Bushveld Igneous Complex in South Africa. The reef has been treated by bulk PGM and sulphide flotation with the aim of maximisingthe valuable minerals recovery and gangue minerals rejection.Synthetic water with a calcium concentration of 80 ppm and 500 ppm was prepared and the flotation results obtained were compared to a simple electrolyte in order to determine the effect water quality has on pentlandite and pyroxene surface alteration and, ultimately, floatability. During the study, the possible effect of interactions between the minerals investigated and Ca2+ ions in the presence of sodium isobutyl xanthate was studied at pH 6 and pH 9 by means of zeta potential determinations, microflotation tests and ToF-SIMS analysis.The results obtained on 1:1 pentlandite-pyroxene mixtures showed that the quality of process water plays an important role in flotation. The flotation recoveries of pentlandite and pyroxene were lower in synthetic process water compared to those obtained in a simple electrolyte solution."

Optical sensors have emerged during the telecom boom in the late 1900s, due to the availability to low-cost telecom-grade optical components. It's only after the telecom industry's fall in 2004 that optical sensors became sufficiently developed to be a viable technology for real-world applications. Geotechnical applications have long relied on electrical sensors such as thermocouples, strain, and the venerable vibrating wire to measure physical phenomena. Although these are well suited for a large variety of applications, electrical sensors cannot be used for all applications: these are vulnerable to noise, hazardous voltages and corrosion, limiting the environments in which they can be used. In addition, electrical wires can also become an issue when sensors require external excitation or are distant from the measurement system. Finally, changes in physical properties of electrical sensors and systems over time makes regular calibration a necessity - not easy to do when these are permanently mounted on structures. Optical sensing systems are non-conducting and use light to perform various measurements. There are several optical sensor technologies available, each with different strengths and weaknesses. In addition, there are different methods of interrogating optical sensors, each of which also present different strengths and weaknesses. To make matters worse, configuring the interrogation and scaling to physical units can also be challenging to the unprepared engineer. This paper will present a holistic view of optical sensing, presenting the different optical sensor technologies and interrogation techniques. Sample optical sensing systems will be revealed and top considerations for optical sensing will be presented.

This paper studies two methods that account for risks associated with gold mining projects such as mineral risks and country risks. The first method is sensitivity analysis, which investigates the effects of a change in any economic parameter such as operating cost, capital investment, gold price or taxes on the viability of the project. The second method is Monte Carlo Simulation technique, which takes into consideration the simultaneous random variation of the economic parameters on the project's viability. An automated simulation cash flow model has been developed as part of this paper. Sensitivity analysis and the simulation model have been used to investigate the economic viability of the Dokrupe Gold Project (DGP) serving as a test case. It is concluded that, the Monte Carlo Simulation technique gives a more realistic judgement of the economic viability of gold mining projects.

The deadline for meeting legal requirements relating to the sale of explosives in the European Union was 1 January 2003. The paper examines the range of materials that have already been certified by the different Explosives Notified Bodies as well as recent national and European Commission decisions relating to this work. The implications of enlargement of the European Union are also discussed as is the future role of the Great Britain Explosives Notified Body in certification and assessment.

At Namdeb, submerged beaches are earmarked for sampling and future mining and various sampling configurations are tested for optimality through the use of spatial simulations. For the creation of these virtual orebodies, basic statistics and variograms are needed, but in this specific instance no data exists from which the necessary parameters can be determined. The best that can be done is to use proxy data from onshore beaches, with adaptations where needed. The reworking of raised beaches during periods of rising and falling sea levels in some cases destroyed the internal beach structures, and it is very difficult to determine the variograms. A method is proposed whereby simulated annealing is used to adjust the sample locations to align the data pertaining to beach crests or cliff lines, thus improving the variogram structure along the shoreline in the direction of the highest geological continuity.

Thermodynamic data has been obtained for oleate chemisorption at fluorite (CaF2) and calcite (CaCO3) surfaces using adsorption isotherms determined previously at room and elevated temperatures by in-situ Fourier transform infrared/internal reflection spectroscopy (FT-IR/IRS). Linear regression analysis was used to statistically derive free energy data as a function of temperature assuming oleate chemisorption followed Langmuir-type adsorption. Enthalpy and entropy changes were subsequently ascertained from the Clausius-Clapeyron equation and fundamental thermodynamic relationships. Essentially, no difference in the free energy of chemisorption at the two mineral surfaces was found; however, the differences in enthalpy and entropy values were significant. By comparison, the results showed that oleate chemisorption at fluorite surfaces was more extensive and more entropically driven due to more water being displaced. Results correlate well with values determined in the literature for other mineral collector systems. These findings help explain the greater hydrophobic character of fluorite than calcite in both the absence and presence of oleate.

The collection of hydrophobic particles in the froth phase in flotation has been studied. A continuous flotation cell was developed, in which the froth phase could be isolated from the pulp zone. Hematite particles, d80 = 87 µm, were floated in the pulp, using a conventional oleate collector, while glass spheres of similar diameter, d80 = 82 µm, were introduced in wash water added to the froth. Four samples of glass spheres, with contact angles between 0 and 82 degrees, were used. The results indicate that the efficiency of collection of the hydrophobic particles in the froth can be very high. The process is strongly influenced by the hydrophobicity of the particles and the surface area available for attachment in the froth. Recommendations for the flotation of particles in the froth phase are made, especially regarding the desirable hydrophobicity as reflected in the contact angle, the froth depth, the solids concentration in the feed to the froth, the air rate and the wash water rate.

Many underground projects now include preparation of a Risk Register through planning and design as a tool for project and risk management. There is still significant discussion within the industry as to whether and how to best present the Risk Register through the bidding process and the construction phase of a project. While the ITIG Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works recommends this approach of continuity in risk management procedures, it is silent on the specifics of how this should be achieved. There is a large economic opportunity associated with improving metallurgical performance in mineral processing plants that use process control. Thus, future control systems will be developed towards more sophisticated user friendly, computer-based systems that use powerful software analysis and control techniques. Auto-tuning, adaptive control and process models will gain expanded use because of their transparent availability to the system designer. Control of individual unit operations will be optimized and coordinated through expert systems that monitor economic conditions and management directives and direct operations accordingly. Plant areas, once considered cost centers, will be integrated into plant-wide control systems for economic control and optimization. This article looks at new control hardware, process sensors, control strategies and software development tools. It also looks at the economics driving the continued development of advanced process control systems. Process control systems routinely used in the mining industry were born when the microprocessor was invented. They have continued along an evolutionary path from vendor specific processing hardware and proprietary operating systems to computer industry standard "open architecture" systems. The many economic forces that drive the development and functionality of these process control systems will cause this evolutionary process to continue. Frictional ignitions (also called face ignitions) is defined as the rapid oxidation of a mixture of methane and air with a visible flame that could last from a few seconds to several minutes. These ignitions have a potential to turn into a mine explosion and eventually a large-scale mine fire. Over the last 22 years, U.S. coalmines have had 1566 frictional ignitions. There were no fatalities but serious injuries have occurred. Every effort, therefore, should be made to prevent frictional ignitions. The preventative measures fall under four categories: (a) degasification of coal seams prior to mining, (b) adequate ventilation, (c) wet cutting or water-jet assisted cutting and (d) machine design to minimize ignitions. The paper discusses each of these techniques in detail.

Manganese imparts numerous beneficial mechanical properties. Hence it finds extensive application in iron, steel and non-ferrous sector. Prevalently, it is incorporated in the form of master alloys i.e. 'ferromanganese'. In India, ferromanganese is mainly the inexpensive and paramount source of availability of manganese. Various conventional and non-conventional techniques of ferromanganese production have been adopted in past and present. However, these techniques have demerits viz. high refractory, energy consumption, losses of valuables in slag and fumes. Also geographical co-ordinates of the plant restricted the manufacturer to prefer an appropriate process. Accordingly, the industrially implemented methods had reliance on availability of infrastructure, energy, mineral resources, grade of raw material, outlay of labor, environmental compatibility of technique etc. In view of the liberalized economy and the gap scenario in the supply and demand of ferromanganese, the authors felt it indispensable to explicitly bridge up this vacuum by initially designing a simple energy conserving, eco-friendly, low capital investment technique for decarburization of ferromanganese. Measurement of the data involved studying the impact of rate governing parameters on the process kinetics. "The Netherlands has major resources of sand, gravel and clay, exploited mainly for construction works and the building materials industry. As in most western countries, mineral extraction meets with considerable societal resistance. To this end, Dutch minerals policy aims to prevent extraction by promoting economical use of materials, and the use of alternative (secondary or renewable) materials. Up till recently, it also included a system of production planning to sustain supplies of regionally scarce materials. Dutch policy development is reviewed and discussed in terms of pitfalls and possibilities for mineral planning in general. Promoting secondary substitution has been quite successful, and presents an example. In contrast, the production planning system has been controversial from the start and ineffective as a result, mainly because it attempted to solve supply problems without properly addressing the underlying resistance. X-ray diffraction (XRD) is a well-recognised, invaluable tool to provide detailed mineralogical analysis on a wide range of applications. However, despite the wide use of XRD in many industries, there are currently few recognised standard methods for quantitative XRD analysis and none for the analysis of iron ore materials. An initial step towards preparing a standard method for XRD analysis of iron ores was to assess the current level of precision achievable by practitioners of the technique by organising an international round robin. Six Australian chemically certified iron ore reference materials were distributed to over 100 international participants. A summary of over 120 data sets from more than 80 participants is presented. Results show that a bewildering array of techniques for sample preparation, data collection, phase identification and quantification were used. The reported values for the main components (ie hematite, goethite, quartz and amorphous content) show not only extensive variability between participants but also within participants’ results for those who submitted multiple data sets. The disappointing low level of precision exhibited for a relatively simple mineral phase system indicates a strong requirement for development of a standardised procedure.CITATION:Raven, M D and Birch, S L, 2017. Changes in the 1978 quantity and value of the sales of various natural abrasives, compared with the data for 1977, were of a mixed nature. Output of tripoli-type materials and garnet increased in both tonnage and value. Emery production also increased. But special silica stone product sales decreased in both tonnage and value, and the reported quantity and value of sales of manufactured abrasive material also decreased for 1978. In 1979 output of tripoli-type materials and special silica stone products decreased in both tonnage and value when compared with the previous year. The tonnage and value of sales of garnet and manufactured abrasives increased when compared to 1978 data.
