"The major losses of PGM and base metals in the beneficiation of platinum group deposits occur during the separation of gangue from the value minerals by selective flotation. A number of studies have shown that this negative impact on flotation is due to surface passivation, caused by various ions that may originate from the external water supply or, as is likely in the majority of cases, from the oxidation of the mineral surfaces and the grinding media. The objective of the study was to investigate the effect surface passivation and inadvertent activation have on flotation and how this can be managed so as to increase the separation of pentlandite and pyroxene. The aim was to minimise the percentage pyroxene reporting to the concentrate and simultaneously maximise the pentlandite recovery. The testwork incorporates the addition of an activator (copper sulphate), a complexing agent, such as DETA (diethylenetriamine) and a dispersant (polyphosphate) at pH 6 and pH 9 in an attempt to alleviate the surface passivation of pentlandite and inadvertent activation of pyroxene. Both synthetic minerals and plant ores were studied in order to determine the effect surface passivation and inadvertent activation have on mineral surface alteration and floatability. Zeta potential determinations, microflotation, ToF-SIMS (Time of Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry) analyses, laboratory batch flotation tests and continuous flotation testwork were used as tools to study the surface alteration and/or floatability.Zeta potential determinations and ToF-SIMS analyses showed that copper adsorption is non-selective. Both pentlandite and pyroxene become copper (II)-activated in the presence of copper sulphate and subsequently, in the presence of xanthate, adsorption of the collector will occur onto copper activated mineral surfaces. Zeta potential determinations also showed an alteration of the surface charge in the presence of polyphosphate, thereby inhibiting surface passivation of sulphides by slime coatings due to surface repulsion."

Metal market prices rose drastically in 2006, and most broke historical records as shown in Figs. 1-4. This increase has been basically driven by economic growth in Asian countries, especially China. The growth trend is expected to continue for several years. Then, India will follow the same growth trend. Their metal demands keep the price levels high for 20 years or more. One more additional important factor on the metal market prices is hedge funds come into the market. Japan imports all metals for domestic use from overseas. The amounts imported were 1.27 million tons in copper, 0.32 million tons in lead, 0.59 million tons in zinc, 0.20 million tons in nickel, and 1.18 million tons in manganese, respectively in 2006 (Source: http://www.jogmec.go.jp/j_resourse/index.html#03). Though mainly we import the concentrates and our domestic customer smelters take the part of metallurgical leaching, the payment necessary for purchasing the concentrates is estimated about US$ 10 billions in 2006. The payments in 2005 and in 2003 were about a half and a quarter of the 2006, respectively. Japan must have effective counter measures to reduce the future payments.

Microwave heating has been used in numerous industrial processes due to its great advantages when compared with conventional heating methods. However, microwave heated products can be affected by non-uniform temperature distribution resulting from the mechanisms of microwave heating. To overcome this problem, a critical step is to have a temperature-time profile. In order to characterize and evaluate microwave heating effects, an accurate temperature measurement is needed. This paper discusses the possibility of applying several temperature measurement techniques in microwave processing. Both contact and non-contact methods are introduced and compared.

"Ecological Engineering and Biological Polishing technology is a decommissioning approach for inactive coal, uranium and base metal operations. To improve acid mine drainage water some fundamental aspects of wetland ecology and sediment microbiology are combined, to provide conditions to allow for biomineralization of the contaminants.This paper summarizes the first records of microbial alkalinity generation in acid mine drainage through the utilisation of the ARUM process. The process requires that the seepage is at pH 4.5 where sulphate reducers utilize sulphate to produce hydrogen sulphide, which in turn precipitates with metals. The pH increase is brought about by alkalinity generating microbes.The ARUM process has been successful in increasing the pH from 2.5 to 7.0. Flow through reactors operated in the laboratory continuously for more than 60 days have removed Ni from 13 mg/L to < 0.01 mg/L. Design parameters are being developed for low flow rates of 5 L/min in a test system receiving seepage from a tailings.1.0 INTRODUCTIONAcid mine drainage associated with mining wastes poses a significant environmental problem. Conventional means to treat acid mine drainage (AMD) use chemical treatment system. Ecological Engineering technology uses natural biological means to curtail and ameliorate AMD during mine operations and at the time of decommissioning. The premise underlying Ecological Engineering technology is that AMD is the result of a natural process enhanced by mining activities. Therefore, in nature, a process providing a natural balance to AMD has to exist, which, when assisted through appropriate means, can counteract the detrimental effects of AMD on the environment. This process is microbial alkalinity generation which is known to occur in wetlands, lake and ocean sediments (Baas Becling et al, 1960)."

There is no doubt that simulated ventilation networks must be adequately verified before they can be extrapolated and used for predictive purposes. There are two general approaches as to how the verification can be established and these are summarised as follows; The first approach is to measure all individual branches with trailing hoses or barometers to get individual pressure drop and flow per branch and then calculate individual resistance factors for input into the software. The simulator is run, checking that the output makes general sense (check some sensitivities if possible). The network is now considered as verified. The pressure drop to be measured is relatively small and thus it is inherent that the measured set of individual K factors will be imprecise no matter how much care is taken in the measurements and the resultant simulations will inherit the same problem. In the second approach, the network is assembled using estimated (Atkinson) K factors (based on physical features of airway, past experience and catalogued typical K factors). Only the main primary flow rates are measured and hence the relative distribution of the primary ventilation in the main airways is determined (probably about 10 off primary air flow measurements). Main critical pressure differentials at main and booster fans and across critical doors are measured (probably about 6 off primary pressure differential measurements need to be made). The simulator is run and the computer model is used to iterate and select an updated suite of K factors so that the flow balances and pressure differentials are correctly simulated (typically only 2 or 3 iterations are all that is needed). The network is now considered as verified. The pressure differences to be measured will be substantial in absolute terms and can be measured with high precision. Also, because only primary flows are measured, these will generally be measured at higher air speed points and hence improved relative accuracy. This leads to more accurate simulation results. Sodium aluminate is the principal aluminum compound formed in the sinters prepared by the lime - soda sinter process for recovering aluminum from silicate source materials . The properties and characteristics of this compound were studied to improve the efficiency of the process . Crystalline sodium aluminate was prepared by sintering stoichiometric quantities of soda ash and calcined alumina for 1 hour at 1,250 ° C. The extent of aluminum extraction from sodium aluminate was determined in water and in solutions of NaOH and Na₂ CO3 . Nearly complete extraction of aluminum from sodium aluminate was achieved only in solutions containing free NaOH in excess of that supplied by the salt through hydrolysis . About 42.2 to 68.8 percent of the aluminum was extracted in water or in solutions of Na₂ CO . The precipitation of alumina trihydrate from sodium aluminate solutions was shown to be part of a continuous , reversible reaction according to the equation Al (OH ) A1 (OH )3 + OHThe reverse reaction dissolves alumina trihydrate in NaOH solutions to produce sodium aluminate . Approximate equilibrium concentrations were determined for the reaction at 30° , 50 ° , and 70 ° C. False apparent equilibrium conditions for the dissolution reaction appear when only a small excess of alumina trihydrate is present in the NaOH solutions . A large excess of alumina trihydrate must be present before the true equilibrium point is assured . The engineering significance of the data is summarized , showing controls that should be exercised for a successful and efficient process .

"Any economic calculation with respect to potential submarine mining activities requires reliable analytical data on the contents of valuable metals in these ores, including trace metals such as rare earth elements as well as Ti, Mo, V, Zr and Li. Due to the very special matrix of ferromanganese nodules (30% manganese oxides, 10-20% iron oxides, silicates; see Kuhn et al., this volume), their geochemical analyses pose a real challenge. Available ferromanganese nodules reference materials, e.g., NOD-P1 and A1, JMn-1, GBW07249, SDO-4 to -7 and NM2388, generally have only a few certified values for trace elements. Published data for these reference materials, collected in the GeoReM database (http://georem.mpch-mainz.gwdg.de/) are either rare for high technology metals or widely scattered for certain elements, especially the PGEs. Since most of these materials were released in the 1990s, many analytical procedures have seen significant advancement.In order to facilitate analytical quality assurance during exploration and potential future mining activities, the German Federal Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources (BGR) has contracted the Central Geological Laboratory of Mongolia (CGL) to produce a certified reference material for nodule analytics. Certified reference materials provide the highest level of reliability in geo-analytical measurements currently available and the CGL has a long-term experience in producing geological reference materials. Recently, the CGL was accredited as a reference material producer according to ISO Guide 34 by the American organization ACLASS (Assured Calibration and Laboratory Accreditation Select Services). Furthermore, it has been accredited as a testing laboratory according to ISO 17025."

The JORC and NI43-101 codes impose that mineralized material has a reasonable prospect of economical extraction to be classified as Mineral Resource. For deposits close to surface and amenable to open pit mining, it is easy to show reasonable prospect of economic extraction running a Lerch-Grossman optimization. The Lerch-Grossman pit provides a transparent and repeatable way of separating the Mineral Resource (within the pit) from the remainder of the mineral inventory (outside the pit). Deposits amenable to underground mining are more challenging because of the variety of the underground methods. AMEC developed a stand-alone software package that outlines the material which has reasonable prospect of economic extraction for open stoping, block caving, sublevel caving and room and pillar. The software takes a block model file in ASCII and exports a 3D surface outlining the part of the mineralization that has a reasonable prospect of economic extraction, and which the Qualified Person can smooth out manually if required.

In Japan, a cartridged emulsion explosive is generally used for tunneling. The workers are compelled to approach the face on charging the explosives into the drill hole with the tamping rod. Therefore, the workers are exposed to the risk of the disaster with the cave-in and the falling rock. The mechanization of the tunnel work has been advancing gradually. Especially, the development of the mechanization for charging work is desired in order to avoid the risk of disaster on workers. Recently, some charging machines such as the bulk emulsion explosives have been evaluated. However, a universal method has not been established yet, because the evaluated machines were not adequately suited from the point of the regulations and the consumption style of explosives.

Coal mine ground control is the science of the application of rock mechanics principles to coal mining operations. More acceptance of ground control techniques by the US coal mining industry has been seen in the 1980s. It has been demonstrated many times that a proper ground control design is key to a successful coal mining operation. However, numerous in-mine applications of various ground control techniques by the author indicate that cur¬rent techniques need improvement. The biggest problem in coal mine ground control is that miners are dealing with materials of rapidly varying properties and occurrence. And only the exposed surface can be identified positively. Thus, in attempting to solve the ground control problems, many unknown factors are assumed. Some of these problems deriving from such assumptions are discussed here. Coal pillars There are two types of coal pillars - barrier and chain pillars - depending on the purpose. Barrier pillars are those located between panels or sections or mines. Their objective is to isolate the mined-out effects of one from the other. Chain pillars are characteristic of room-and-pillar mining. They are designed to support the overburden load and protect the surrounding entries and crosscuts. Pillar design is the most popular and, frequently, the only ground control technique employed by coal operators for mine design. There are many pillar design formulae available (Bieniawski, 1983; Peng, 1986). Nearly all consider both size and width/height effects. Specifically, pillar strength decreases with increases in pillar size and increases with increase in the ratio of width to height. However, the manner of those changes varies with investigators. Consequently, the pillar size determined varies considerably from investigator to investigator. And the variation grows much more pronounced as the seam depth increases (Fig. 1). The question, then, is which one should be used? One may say each formula is developed for a particular coalfield. A particular formula may have been used to design a pillar, which has not failed. Does that mean it was over designed? Not necessarily, because no one can confirm its stated "safety factor." Recent case studies (Peng, 1986; Tang and Peng, 1988) show that all pillar formulae are too conservative for chain pillar design in room-and-pillar mines due to the following two problems: • Uncertainty about in situ pillar strength. All formulae employ uniaxial compressive strength of selected samples tested in the laboratory and scaled to that for underground pillars. The scaling factors are not well proven. In situ testings by Bieniawski (1969) suggested that 1.5 m (5 ft) pillars are representative of in situ pillars that, after being tested in various US coal mines, are not universally applicable. • Uncertainty about the actual loading on the pillar. The most frequently used tributary loading theory defines the loading as total overburden weight tributary to each pillar (from roofline to surface). This is too conservative when it applies to coal measure rocks. The overburden consists of layered strata of different stiffness. Many stiffer strata will self-support over small roof spans. Depending on the location of these strata above the coal seam, it will reduce pillar loading in various proportions. It follows that total structural analysis using, for instance, finite element method is more appropriate. It can take into account the interaction of roof and floor strata with coal. With several “green” applications on the horizon, bismuth has become an even more important minor metal in the smelting and refining of lead. Smelters with a complex sulphide feed invariably deal with bismuth. Its behavior during the smelting of lead in conventional sinter-blast furnace operation is discussed. Because it readily deports to the lead phase during the refining of lead, its separation from refined lead remained unsatisfactory in early lead production. When commercial requirements of bismuth in lead became more stringent early this century, the procedure where by calcium and magnesium is used todebismuthise lead was developed. The present conduct of this 1936 process, the Kroll-Betterton process, is discussed with emphasis on operational improvements.

"Since 1994, Aur Ressources has operated Louvicourt mine, a zinc and copper mine close to Val d’Or, at a rate of 4300 t/d. Ever since the start-up of the plant, management has encouraged innovative approaches in reliability. The first of three papers will discuss the vibration monitoring program in place. The program will be described and two examples will be given: detection of a rolling bearing defect on a pinion driving the ball mill and identification of wear on the bearings of the flotation cells. Figures on the return on investment and the costs of a monitoring program will also be given.The second article will discuss the lubrication aspect. Since the establishment of a good monitoring and oil analyses, Louvicourt mine decreased its oil consumption by more than 38 000 L/yr. In addition, the company set up an oil regeneration system that restores the original properties of oil.The third article will cover the management aspect. Work organization as well as the management philosophy enabling the employes to push predictive technology to higher levels will be examined in detail. The key elements which made it possible for Louvicourt mine to position itself among world-class companies in the organization of maintenance will be discussed."

The current work deals with the measurement of some thermophysical properties of Ca(NO3)2 based ternary nitrate molten salts as HTF (heat transfer fluid) / TES (Thermal Energy Storage) material for CSP (Concentrating solar power) plants. The density and viscosity of different compositions of the ternary salt mixture containing Ca(NO3)2, NaNO3 and KNO3 close to the liquidus has been experimentally measured. An attempt has also been made to measure the melting point of the salt using the cooling curve technique as well as Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). Thermogravimetric analysis has also been performed to estimate the peak operating temperature of the salt. Compatibility of suitable pipe material (SS304) with molten salt has also been discussed. The salt mixture proves to be a viable alternative to the already existing HTFs like Therminol VP-1 (organic oil) or Solar Salt® in regards to its lower melting point, wider operating range, low cost, nontoxicity, sufficiently high density and comparable viscosity.

Vision 21 is a government/industry/academia cost-shared partnership to develop the technology basis for integrated energy plants that will, early in the 21stcentury, result in the deployment of ultra-clean plants that produce electricity and “opportunity” products. Vision 21 plants will use fossil fuel feed-stocks in combination with other domestic resources, e.g., biomass, municipal waste, and petroleum coke. Opportunity products could include transportation fuels, steam, high-value chemicals, synthesis gas, and hydrogen. Performance targets for Vision 21 plants, example plant configurations, and the key technologies that will be needed are described.

Rock socketed mini-piles are a desirable foundation alternative when design capacity is more than 40 tons and there is limited access. In this case history mini-piles were designed to support between 75 and 200 kips at 12 locations adjacent to a perimeter wall, a party wall and at cast iron column piers. Limited geotechnical information, low overhead clearance, and active building population tested the creativity of the team to get the piles installed. The key geotechnical concern during installation of the mini-piles was the presence of a glacial till layer above the bedrock surface that restricted the seating of the casing into bedrock with a track mounted drill rig. Soil loss during the advancement of the rock socket using an air hammer was excessive and increased the risk of subsidence. Over a three week period the engineer worked with the contractor to modify the design, means, methods, and materials to install piles with adequate load capacity. This paper will present the changes in design and construction methods that were required.

SMC Resources Limited is implementing a selective mining approach at the Hadleigh Castle mine, formerly operated by Aurora Gold Limited. The main ore zone has a length of 250 metres and dips at 40 - 45¦ to the south. Gold mineralisation occurs in a variety of quartz-sulphide lodes in sericitised granodiorite. Shallow dips, alteration intensity and mineralisation style combine to make mining relatively difficult. Previously unworked, high-grade, shallow dipping (30 - 45¦), narrow quartz-sulphide lodes within the hanging-wall of the deposit are also being selectively exploited. Annual production of 35 000 oz Au is forecast from 185 000 tpa ore grading 6.5 g/t Au over a currently envisaged mine life of six years. Operations completed to-date include deepening the decline and access development of the first two levels beneath the previous workings. Longhole stoping operations have commenced in the main ore zone with air leg stoping also underway in the hanging wall lodes.
