Aços resistentes ao serviço ácido (sour service), com requisitos adicionais de alta resistência mecânica e tenacidade, têm sido especificados para aplicação em gasodutos do Pólo Pré-sal da Bacia de Santos. O desenvolvimento de aços que atendam a estes severos requisitos, visando à fabricação de tubos de elevada espessura, constitui um enorme desafio para o fabricante do aço. No presente trabalho, é apresentado o desenvolvimento do aço API 5L-X65 Sour Service para esse tipo de aplicação, onde são descritas as principais ações realizadas no processo de produção que permitiram o sucesso no desenvolvimento do produto, confirmado pelas excelentes propriedades obtidas nas chapas e nos tubos.

The inherent heating value or the amount of heat that will be produced when a coal is completely burned is measured in British thermal units (B. t. u.) per pound of coal . This standard heat unit is the quantity of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 pound of water 1 °F . at about 60 °F . The amount of inherent heat is determined by burning a small quantity of the coal in a heat meter or calorimeter , which gives results in British thermal units . The exact manner of making this test is standardized by the American Society for Testing Materials.4/ The value so determined is the total heat developed by complete burning, with all the products of combustion cooled down to the temperature of the calorimeter . The calorimeter is kept at about room temperature . This total heat is sometimes called the " high" or gross heat value , because it includes the latent heat given up by the water vapor in the products of combustion when the vapor condenses to water in the calorimeter . The heat as measured is reported as the heat of combustion at constant volume , since the burning is carried out in a tightly closed calorimeter chamber whose volume does not change . In actual use , coal is usually burned in an open - end chamber at constant pressure , generally somewhere near atmospheric . As the heat of combustion of coal at constant pressure is very slightly higher than the heat of combustion at constant volume , it might be considered that the heat at constant pressure should be used as the standard reference base . For an ordinary eastern coal the heat at constant pressure is about 16 B. t . u. per pound higher than the heat at constant volume . Calorimeter corrections , ordinarily not considered , that could have been subtracted from the heating value before reporting , may amount to about as much . Hence , the value reported is apt to be more nearly the true heating value at constant pressure than at constant volume .

North American railroad locomotive operators (engineers and conductors) are exposed to multi-axis vibration and shocks (1, 2). A recent epidemiological survey showed a prevalence of serious type of neck and lower back disorders nearly double that of a control group (3). Ergonomic working conditions are important co-factors in a vibration and shock exposure risk assessment (4, 5). The goal of this study is to illustrate typical work stations (cabs and seats) in US/Canadian type locomotives and assess shock related exposure risk by calculations of the new proposed shock risk indicators according to the new ISO 2631-5 (2004) (6). Methods Locomotive cab and seat inspections were conducted and operators’ activities were assessed by a trained observer. Field measurements (n=50) were obtained during normal revue service following generally accepted guidelines (ISO 2631 (1)). A sub-sample of n=20 locomotives were selected for the calculation of proposed shock indicators (ISO 2631 (5)). Results There has been little change in basic locomotive cab and seat design in the U.S.. Two locomotive cab design concepts are used: the Association of American Railroad (AAR) Control Stand and in newer series wide-body locomotives the “Control Consol” (Figures 1-2), with varying seating conditions, but frequently subjecting the operator to an awkward body posture in addition to the vibration and shock exposure. Discussion of the paper of C. R. Keyes, presented at the Chattanooga meeting, October, 190S, Bulletin No. 26, February, 1909, pp. 119 to 166. E. R. BUCKLEY, Flat River, Mo. (communication to the Secretary*) :-Some statements in the paper of Mr. Keyes relative to the nature and formation of the Ozark lead- and zinc-deposits seem to me erroneous and misleading, and I respectfully present the following criticisms, placing Mr. Keyes's original statements in quotations. Referring to the Ozark dome: (P. 127.) "It is a region that has been repeatedly upraised and planed off, until in the middle portion the oldest known' rocks only are exposed." Does he mean that the St. Francois mountains, which have always been considered as lying on the eastern flank of the Ozark dome, are the middle of the dome? Or does he mean that the Cambrian rocks of the generally-accepted middle are the oldest known rocks ? Certainly not the latter, and if the former, his idea of the middle of the dome is not in accord with that of others who are familiar with the region. (P. 138.) " . . . the ore-deposits are definitely associated with, or localized by, geologic structures of some kind that .produce in effect basins in which' the underground waters are impounded, or their flow retarded." This statement does not appear to be altogether consistent with the facts, since the ore- bodies of the Joplin district, as the rule, occur in those parts of the Mississippian formation which have a tendency to accel¬erate the flow of ground-water rather than retard it. I might name the open, breeciated ground near Joplin, Webb City, and Oronogo as especially noteworthy illustrations. The ore-bodies, everywhere, occur in positions where there must have been a free and copious circulation of dilute lead- and zinc-solutions in the presence of reducing constituents. En el proceso de clausura de labores explotadas en a mina subterránea se emplean estructuras de cerramiento, con la finalidad de que estos sectores alcancen la seguridad física, química y protección ambiental en el interior de la unidad de producción y sus alrededores. Sin embargo, uno de los problemas que se presenta durante la explotación de la mina, responde a el abatimiento de la napa freática, donde los sistemas de drenaje captan y conducen el agua por las galerías ubicadas en los niveles inferiores de las minas, generando el Drenaje Ácido de Roca. Por ello, el presente texto señala la construcción de las estructuras de cerramiento proyectadas y construidas en un nivel freático para así reducir el oxígeno requerido para la formación del DAR. Asimismo, se muestra la estructura proyectada y construida en el Nivel 490 de la unidad de producción Julcani, perteneciente a la Compañía de Minas Buenaventura S.A. A y la aplicación práctica de los métodos usados para su diseño.

The particles commonly encountered in mineral benefication schemes have irregularites that are expressed at many different length scales. In part, this originates from preceding processes (e.g. makedown, comminution, handling and storage), which are known to chemically and physically modify the bulk particle and its surface. Interparticle tribology, dissolution and reprecipitation events along with large-scale mechanical stresses are just a handful of the interactions encountered during processing of particles prior to separation. It is feasible to imagine that each one of these events may impose a fingerprint of characteristic nanoscale, microscale, and macroscale morphological changes that can modify the overall interaction of these particles within a system. Suprisingly there are just a few works on how these resulting features can alter the performance of benefication schemes, and especially flotation.

Upgrading of a low-grade titanium slag (~55% TiO2) with high silica, calcia, magnesia and iron contents has been studied using sulphation roasting technique using SO2/air gas mixture followed by hydrochloric acid leaching. XRD analysis of the sulphated slag reveals the presence of kennedyite (Fe2O3. MgO. 3TiO2), rutile (TiO2), calcium sulphate (CaSO4) and calcium silicate (3CaO.SiO2) phases. The residue after leaching contains mainly kennedyite, rutile phases and free silica with traces of calcium silicate phase. Synthetic rutile that has about 83% TiO2 can be produced at the optimum conditions. Thermodynamic calculations give rational explanations of the obtained results.

El proceso de explotación de la Minera Rayrock se inició hace seis años a tajo abierto y ahora comprende las etapas de extracción del mineral, chancado, aglomeración, lixiviación, extracción por solventes y electro-obtención. En ese sentido, el presente trabajo describe el avance del proceso de extracción en el proyecto minero Ivan, perteneciente al yacimiento de la minera Rayrock a través de las técnicas de lixiviación de minerales oxidados y sulfurados de cobre y del manejo innovador en las operaciones de extracción por solventes y electro-obtención.

The following is a summary of a very recent report prepared at Texas A&M University for the National Cooperative Highway Research Program and entitled "Downdrag on Bitumen Coated Piles". Anytime the soil settles more than the pile, downdrag or negative skin friction will develop. The load in the pile increases with depth up to a certain point and then decreases down to the pile point. This phenomenon has been quoted as being the number one culprit for deep foundation failures. In Chapter 1, an introduction to downdrag is given. The most common criterion for downdrag is to consider it in design as soon as the settlement of the soil surface after pile driving exceeds 0.5 in. Coating piles with bitumen is an effective way of reducing downdrag forces and therefore allows to use smaller piles for the same load. This results in cost savings. Coating piles with bitumen increase the cost of piles by about 33% and therefore the decision to use bitumen is generally based on economic considerations.

Drilled shafts are a popular type of foundation for transportation applications. They feature the advantages of providing high bearing capacity and generating low construction noise. Advancements in construction technology make it possible to construct drilled shaft with large diameters. In some transportation projects, the full structural loads are carried by a single large diameter drilled shaft; therefore accurately determining the bearing capacity of drilled shafts has important practical and safety implications. The increase of drilled shaft diameter combined with the structure properties of the surrounding soil play in an important role in their bearing capacity. The conventional methods for bearing capacity determination, which mostly come from experience with small diameter drilled shafts, may not work satisfactorily. This paper studies the influence of diameter on the bearing capacity of laterally loaded drilled shafts. Numerical simulations are conducted to investigate the effects of pile diameter on the lateral bearing capacity, especially the influence of shaft diameter and its structural contributions.

During ore body modeling normally additional samples are required to improve resources evaluation and mining planning. At this stage one rises the question about where additional samples should be located. Regular sampling pattern seems to be a reasonable choice, since all the regions within the deposit receive the same number of samples without a clear clustering. Nevertheless, values for certain attributes (grades for instance) from a mineral deposits may behave more erratic in some regions than others. Consequently, by adding samples to these regions could bring more benefit for reducing the uncertainty related to a transfer function such as Net Present Value (NPV), instead of adding samples to location of low grade uncertainty. Thus, for a given number of additional data, the test of a regular pattern and a pattern which add samples on areas of high uncertainty of the attribute of interest is worth. This paper presents an algorithm that allows the construction of these two patterns, automatically, on a software commonly used in the mining industry. The algorithm leads to a fast analysis on the efficiency of the two patterns in reducing the uncertainty associated with a transfer function.

O alto-forno é um reator metalúrgico cujo principal produto é o ferro gusa. Práticas operacionais bem ajustadas, como a injeção de carvão mineral e gás natural, possibilitam menor consumo de coque, melhor produtividade e redução de custo. Um parâmetro importante na injeção de tais combustíveis é o potencial de oxidação da chama, chamado de Índice de Excesso de Oxigênio (IEO). Foi desenvolvida uma fórmula capaz de determinar o IEO para um alto-forno com injeção de carvão mineral baixo volátil e gás natural. Foi observado que, em média, o IEO e seu desvio padrão, para períodos com injeção de somente carvão mineral, foi maior que em períodos com co-injeção de carvão e gás natural. A otimização do IEO mostrou-se uma alternativa para melhorar o desempenho do alto-forno.

A liga MA2024, reconhecida pelas aplicações em componentes aeronáuticos e automobilísticos, foi obtida por moagem em moinho atritor. Com o objetivo de melhorar as propriedades mecânicas, adições de 2,5%; 5%; 10% e 20% de reforço com tamanho de partícula inicial menor que 45 µm foi realizada em moinho planetário, com relação de carga:bolas de 3:1 e 15 minutos de moagem a 250 RPM. A consolidação dos corpos de prova cilíndricos foi realizada pela técnica de forjamento de precisão, em matriz fechada em forno tubular na temperatura de 490oC. A microestrutura foi avaliada por microscopia óptica e eletrônica, enquanto que a resistência mecânica foi avaliada por ensaio de microdureza. Os resultados de microscopia revelaram a formação de intermetálicos que influenciam de forma positiva e significativa no comportamento mecânico dos compósitos.

A study was conducted to elucidate the relationship between the hovering velocity and the particle settling velocity. The experiments were carried out in a water medium on five materials ranging in density from 1.070 to 4.000 kg/m3. Analysis of the results with allowance for the distribution of stream velocities over the cross section of the pipe revealed that the final settling velocity of the particles was equal to their local hovering velocity (on the stream axis), and not to the average velocity of vertical flow as is generally believed. It therefore follows that the kinetic structure of the stream must be taken into account when constructing theoretical models of the process for purposes of computation. In addition, the optimal stream velocity is not always equal to the hovering velocity and in fact is governed by other factors as well. Illustration is provided by the results of a study conducted in a vertical cascade classifier comprising eleven identical stages. The feed material was introduced at each stage successively beginning with the topmost (i* = 1 ) and ending with the lowermost (i* = 11). First, the stream velocity that yields optimum separation conditions at each stage of the cascade (i.e. k=50%, k being the yield of a given size class in the fines for a single stage) was sought. Subsequently the conditions of optimal separation for the instrument as a whole were determined (i.e. F(x) = 50%, F(x) being the yield of a given size class for the entire instrument). The results of the study are presented in the table.

Ore concentration processes are a function of the respective particle size distribution; however, most of them do not use an efficient operational method to determine it. From a practical point of view, the surface area can be calculated for any size analysis. The physical principles for determining the size distribution in each method are different, for the results will not be compared directly. During the development of the research project of the sulfide ore flotation method using inert gas, different methods for calculating the specific surface area have been used, such as sieving, sedimentation/X-ray, laser diffraction and BET, i.e. specific techniques to determine the specific surface area of copper and gold ore concentrates. The statistical method of minimum squares was used to achieve practical correlation equations among them. Regarding these two ores, if one knows a specific surface area value using one of the methods above, one can predict the result of the others. Diminution of the reagent consumption was so controlled and it could be even decreased by using inert gas.

"Cassiar Asbestos Corporation Limited is at present B,C.'s only asbestos mining company, and has been actively engaged in the management and operation of the Cassiar Mine since the early 1950's. The Cassiar operations are located between 3,500' and 6,600' elevation in a secluded mountainous area of northern B.C., approximately 100 miles by road southwest of Watson Lake in the Yukon Territory. Climatic conditions in this area range from mild warm in the summer, to extremely cold during the long winter period.The minesite itself is located over a mile above sea level at the top of McDame Mountain, where year round 24 hours per day miners extract the chrysotile ore from the surrounding waste by standard open pit techniques. The ore body dips into the mountain at about a 45° angle, and as the mining progresses, larger stripping ratios are required. Waste to ore ratio this year will be more than 10 to l whereas only a few years ago ratios of 3 or 4 to l were possible. After drilling, blasting, and loading by shovel onto trucks, the asbestos ore is transported to the Primary Crushing Plant for crushing prior to transport by aerial tramway more than three miles to the Concentrator and Mill in the valley below, where the fibre is extracted from the barren host rock serpentine and milled into numerous grades for shipment to asbestos users round the world. The major air usage is associated with the milling process, presently requiring over 500,000 CFM, with future requirements expected to exceed 840,000 CFM by the end of the decade."

O presente trabalho comparou o desempenho do fosfato de zinco e do microfosfato de zinco, ambos com tecnologia dry-in-place para verificação do comportamento destes revestimentos frente à conformação mecânica, por meio do ensaio de embutimento Erichsen, método Nakazima e curvas limite de conformação (CLC). Foram estudadas chapas de aço-carbono grau EM e grau EEP G4 eletrozincadas e fosfatizadas. As chapas foram fosfatizadas empregando-se dois banhos: fosfato de zinco e microfosfato de zinco, ambos com tecnologia dry-in-place. A caracterização da morfologia dos fosfatos estudados por microscopia eletrônica de varredura mostrou que as camadas de fosfato de zinco não apresentaram formação de cristais, quando aplicadas por roll coater e as análises por EDS comprovaram a presença do elemento fósforo. O ensaio de embutimento Erichsen somado aos resultados obtidos nas curvas CLC demonstraram que o microfosfato exibiu desempenho melhor em comparação ao fosfato. A diferença entre os dois tipos de fosfato foi mensurável e evidenciou que a tecnologia dry-in-place colaborou com a produção de camadas fosfatizadas adequadas para a lubrificação durante o processo de conformação mecânica.

The behaviors and stress distributions of the inclined jointed rock masses with different dip angles obtained from DDA are compared to the results of laboratory tests. By calculating the block stress distributions, it is confirmed that DDA can reproduce the arching around the trap door when lowering the trap door. The shapes of arching change with the angles of inclined layers. In addition, the earth pressures acting on the trap door shows non-symmetrical distributions when the layers are not horizontal. The stress concentration occurs in one side of the rock masses close to the trap door. Furthermore, the surface settlements are also related to the inclined angle, and the loosening zone in rock masses can be different from Terzghi’s theory [1]. Since, simulations have good agreements with the laboratory test , it demonstrates the applicability of DDA to explain the mechanical behaviors of tunnel, such as arching phenomenon, non-symmetrical earth pressure distributions acting on the trap door, and the surface settlement profile in the jointed rock masses. Dans cet article est décrite l’étude numérique du perçage d’un tunnel dans un massif de couches rocheuses jointes inclinées. La simulation à l’aide de l’Analyse de Déformation Discontinue (DDA), en faisant varier l’angle d’inclinaison des couches de roche, nous apporte des résultats en termes de distributions de contraintes et de comportement des couches, résultats qui sont ensuite comparés avec des résultats de tests en laboratoire. Les résultats confirment le fait que la DDA est capable de reproduire le phénomène d’arcage autour de la trappe lorsque la trappe s’abaisse. Les formes d’arcage varient selon l’angle d’inclinaison des couches de roche. Par ailleurs, lorsque les couches ne sont pas horizontales, la distribution de pression agissant sur la trappe est assymmétrique. La concentration de contraintes se produit du coté proche de la trappe. De plus, les tassements de surface dépendent eux aussi de l’angle d’inclinaison. En conséquence, les résultats de simulation sont en accord avec les tests en laboratoire, ce qui prouve que la DDA permet d’expliquer des comportements mécaniques du tunnel tels que l’arcage, les distributions assymmétiques de pression du sol sur la trappe, ainsi que le profil du tassement de surface dans la masse de roches jointes. Das Verhalten und die Druckverteilungen in den unterschiedlich geneigten und geklüfteten Felsenmassen wird mit Hilfe des Discontinuous Deformation Analysis Programms (DDA) simuliert, und mit Laborversuchen verglichen. Die Resultate bestätigen, dass DDA der Gewölbewirkung im „Trapdoor“ Experiment gut reproduzieren kann. Die Form des Gewölbes, ändert sich mit unterschiedlichen Neigungswinkeln der Schichten. Bei geneigten Schichten entstehen unsymmetrische Druckverteilungen. Auch die Oberflächenabsenkung ist von dem Neigungswinkel abhängig. Die gute Übereinstimmung der Simulationen mit den Laborversuchen zeigt, dass die DDA-Methode gut geeignet ist, um das mechanische Verhalten von Tunneln, wie z.B. den Effekt der Gewölbewirkung, die unsymmetrischen Druckverteilungen bei geneigten Schichten, oder die Oberflächenabsenkung in geklüfteten Felsenmassen, zu erklären.
