Coal-bearing regions cover about 18,464 square miles or one third of Iowa, primarily in the south-central part of the state. Coal quality ranges from subbituminous to high volatile bituminous. Iowa's coal reserves are estimated to be 2.2 billion tons, less than one-half of one percent of total U.S. reserves. Coal beds are typically thin seams with a maximum thickness of five feet. Coal deposits in Iowa were fist mined in the 1840s for blacksmithing and domestic purposes. Demand for coal increased with the use of coal to fuel steamboats and railroads. Production peaked in 1917, when Iowaproduced9 million tons of coal. Since then, conversion to natural gas and fuel oil has decreased the demand for coal. Today, electrical power generating plants have created a continuing, but declining, demand for Iowa's coal. Coal production in Iowa is by surface mining methods. The Iowa regulatory program was conditionally approved January 21, 1981. Full approval was received March 28,1982, and the Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved March 28, 1983.

A colloquium on 'Developments in the Mechanization of Mining Operations' was held in, conjunction with the 1984 Electra Mining Exhibition, at the Milpark Holiday Inn in Johannesburg on 19th September, 1984. An attendance of close on 200 delegates was testimony to the popularity of the subject. The delegates included a number of visitors from abroad, including senior members of the management of foreign companies and a member of the Council of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, United Kingdom. Both the local and foreign press was also represented.

The Australian mining industry is a significant contributor to the nation’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and like any industry, it must make efforts to reduce these. Medium- and long-term strategies will include the replacement of diesel engines with alternative energy sources, but what can be done in the short-term to reduce diesel consumption and hence CO2 emissions? Haul trucks are identified as the major contributors of CO2 emissions in the mining fleet and this paper focuses on firstly identifying what drives haul truck emissions and secondly, discussing what is the role of the Fleet Management System (FMS) in reducing these. A key enabler of this is having a robust fuel consumption model within the FMS, and I describe how this may be done. Besides novel approaches to incorporating fuel consumption (CO2) management into truck assignment algorithms, this paper also describes how the FMS can be used to implement and manage procedures and policies to reduce haul truck emissions.

Site-based case studies (including data collected from industrial surveys) and their application in evaluating circuit performance, have a significant role in developing reliable process models. Such models are useful to both plant metallurgists and researchers. Appropriate process models enable the plant metallurgist to assess the impact of different operational parameters on the overall circuit performance. They also provide the researcher with a detailed understanding of process behaviour in response to changes in ore characteristics and process conditions (ie plant throughput, ore competence, ore type). Thus enabling the identification of effective operating factors, and allowing them to be ranked in order of their influence on the process response, which eventually develops into a process control tool in the hands of plant operators.The above approach has been developed and applied at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) separately for both comminution and flotation processes. In recent years, the JKMRC has attempted an integrated approach by developing process models that incorporate the impact of upstream processes on downstream processes. This is not possible using the traditional approach of separate comminution and flotation surveys, so conducting integrated plant surveys is crucial for success in developing integrated process models. This paper summarises industrial experience gained while conducting such an integrated plant survey at Glencore’s Ernest Henry Mining operation near Cloncurry in north Queensland. An appropriate approach should be taken to enable the alignment of different requirements from different processes during the plant survey. China has a traditional segment of Copper Smelters with its own Chinese technology, typically small in size from 20.000 to 50.000 tCu/a, and they are responsible for the processing and production of more than 600,000 tonnes of blister copper per year. For occidental experts, like one of the authors, it is not so easy to believe that they are profitable, because the size and the use of old Blast Furnaces, but they are with simple and effective production lines. The authors are convinced that China has a good alternative to improve theses old copper production lines with small innovative changes in its process arrangement, jumping to higher level technology, more efficient in production, productivity and cost, assuring copper as a raw material for the country and its high speed development. The key to improve that the traditional Chinese Copper Smelter is white metal as an extra raw material as a first step doubling the copper production from raw materials and the complete replacement of concentrates by white metal (WM) in a second step increasing it four times or more as the final goal. It is not so difficult nor expensive to make it happen, but there are a couple of questions for implementing this innovation in the copper smelter industry: 1 - Will the old fashioned mentality be open to this new direction for China being the biggest copper consumer on one side, and the biggest copper Primary Producers on the other hand? and 2 - Will they be open to follow this "win-win" strategic way for both ends of the copper market? We don't know if anybody will take up the challenge to improve it but our responsibility as a consulting expert and a university professor is to put the alternative on table for others to decide whether to implement it.

High strength cable strand supports are predominately used as a supplemental means of ground control in longwall and development operations in the U.S. The advantages of cable strand supports have been documented and include flexibility, strength, and ease of installation. Since the majority of cable supports installed in the U.S. today are partially grouted, and this same segment of supports has no inherent installed tension, the supports are considered currently arbitrarily strictly supplemental and therefore, cannot currently be deemed primary support (in most mining districts). This paper details and discusses two distinctly different configurations and the technical advantages of active partially grouted cable supports for certain primary support applications. The evolution of the designs for both systems is highlighted. Field data illustrates the amount of active load in relationship to installed torque and the affects that component variables have on this load measurement. Roof control patterns using active cable supports are examined as alternatives for combination patterns using primary and supplemental systems. The importance of maintaining consistent installation procedures plays an important role in the level of performance of the system. Economics comparing the installation of active cables with other primary/supplemental patterns is also included.

Due to economic aspects and environmental regulations recycling of slag and waste from ferroalloy production became a very important issue for the companies during the last years. The treatment of slag depends prior on the composition, especially on their content of valuable metals and impurities. The final aim should be a total re-use of these materials in the industry e.g. cement industry, pig-iron production etc.. Therefore, to reach the required physical and chemical properties for a further use, possibilities of a metallurgical treatment have been investigated. The conditioning of slag with a high V-, Mo- and P-content via reducing metal bath showed to be one alternative. To determine the optimal process parameters, practical investigations with different slag compositions and thermodynamic calculations were carried out.

THE Pilares mine of the Moctezuma Copper Co. is situated at Los Pilares de Nacozari, Sonora, Mexico, about 75 mi. (120.7 km.) South of the international boundary and about 7 mi. (11.26 kin.) east of the town of Nacozari de Garcia. It is situated at an elevation of 5000 ft. (1524 m.) in one of the northward trending ridges that form part of the mountain mass that culminates in the Sierra Madre de Mexico. To the east, south, and west, the topography is rugged and diversified; to the north less diversity exists, ranges of mountains rise sharply out of almost level ground and give the basin range structure characteristic of the southwest. The use of mining by-products for beneficial use may face approval, and acceptance barriers. This paper described the use of a sustainability framework to assess the safety, effectiveness and economic value of modified bauxite residue (Alkaloam«) for use on agricultural land in the Peel-Harvey region of Western Australia. The results indicate the merit associated with using this by-product from a safety and, private, community and environmental value perspective. They may be used to indicate the worth of pursuing any future community acceptance and agency approval process.   The use of Alkaloam« for beneficial use on agricultural land in Western Australia was first investigated over 25 years ago. Efforts to gain regulatory approval and community acceptance of Alkaloam« have had a complicated and enduring history. Understanding and assessing the value of a by-product using social and economic considerations, in conjunction with an environmental assessment, provided a more complete evaluation to that previously used.

In this paper, the computer program ‘SHAFT’ developed for estimation of support requirements for circular mine shafts is introduced. Theory of support design is based on the analytical solutions of circular excavations under non-hydrostatic loading (Detourney and St. John1), and Lame’s thick-wall cylinder theory (Timoshenko6). For rock mass strength property determination Hoek-Brown failure criterion (Hoek et al.2) is used. Mainly two types of support, concrete and steel are taken into consideration as a support member. Program is written in Quick Basic language. Input parameters of the program are shaft radius, number of zones having the same properties along the shaft depth, and depth, unit weight, horizontal to vertical stress ratio, GSI, and uniaxial compressive strength of intact rock of each zone, and compressive strength and safety factor of support member. Output of the program is the graphical representation of shaft with the required support member and thickness throughout the depth of the shaft.

The molecular structure of hydrophobic and hydrophilic groups in nonionic surfactants has been related to the wetting and dispersion of selected pigments. The nonionic surfactants included in this study are acetylenic diol based surfactants and ethoxylated alkyl phenols. The Langmuir model could be used to fit adsorption data. Further analysis of the data showed that the free energy of adsorption was a function of adsorption density of the surfactants at the interface. The change in free energy with adsorption density could be interpreted by considering a change in the orientation of the adsorbed molecules. Acetylenic diol based surfatants were found to have an area per molecule of 2-3 times that of similarly ethoxylated alkyl phenols. The wetting and dispersion properties of lamp black, a model hydrophobic surface, by these surfactants were investigated by contact angle measurements and particle size analysis. Acetylenic diol based surfactants with ethylene oxide contents between3.5 and 10 moles per molecule and alkyl phenol based surfactants with approximately 9 moles of ethylene oxide per molecule were found to provide superior wetting abilities. Longer ethylene oxide chains were required for superior dispersion capabilities within each family of surfactants. Complete wetting and dispersion was found to occur above the critical micelle concentration of the surfactants.

Jining No. 3 Coal Mine, a subsidiary of Yanzhou Coal Company Limited. China, is a super-large modern mine. The coal mine is not only the first one constructed with five-million tons of designed production capacity in China, but also a modern underground coal mine with coal transportation systems by trains and ships, and with a power plant. Based on the hard roof conditions of the sublevel caving coal face in the fault-affected zone, the authors designed rebar and cable bolts for supporting the tailgate that is separated from the gob by a narrow pillar. With extensometers and borescope, strata behavior was systematically studied during tailgate development: (1). Roof convergence is much smaller as well as roof strata separation between inside and outside the anchored zone. (2). The affected zone during tailgate development is approximately 50 m. (3). Because of serious floor heave and obvious rib convergence, the tailgate finally turned into a reversed-trapezoid from the original rectangular shape. (4). There being many joints and fractures in the pillar, coal is crushed from the elastic bedded structure into loose blocky materials. But the tailgate met the service requirements during longwall retreat mining, and demonstrated that the method of roof support was a success. Since then, roof bolting has been widely used for the tailgate of longwall panels at Jining No. 3 Coal Mine. Highwall mining, which is a relatively new mining method, is a preferred and often the only feasible method for extracting coal reserve left by surface mining operations in areas with steep terrain and in closely spaced thin coal seams. Though its safety record is comparable to that of surface mining, failures of mine structures in highwall mines, especially the highwall, have occurred. Methods for the systematic designing of highwall mines to meet the safety and operational challenges are still evolving. This paper presents the results of research into improving the existing design methods and developing new ones for highwall mining operations. The design methodology is aimed at ensuring structural stability of the highwall, roof, web and barrier pillars and preventing subsidence. It takes into consideration the major ground control challenges of soft and layered mine roofs, and interactions from mining closely spaced coal seams. An optimization design process applying a pressure arch concept can be incorporated to improve the recovery rate of coal reserve. A computer program based on the design methodology was developed.

Mining companies have traditionally organized their structure around a scheme easy to manage: Mining Department and Mill Department. In a challenging landscape for mining, with decreasing grades, increasing rock hardness and more expensive energy, this way to organize departments has resulted in internal disputes and often contradictory targets between both mine and mill. These compete for individual, separated budgets whose Key Performance Indexes often damage each other’s output. The results are increased total production costs and reduction of profits. Some companies have completed the first step in eliminating these inefficiencies by creating Fragmentation Engineers and Fragmentation Superintendents. With all the knowledge available on the overall fragmentation process and costs, in this document an overhaul of the traditional management structure is proposed. Is a step further Mine-to-mill and mine-to-leach programs. Since comminution is the most expensive step of the mineral exploitation, it should be taken as a whole, not divided into competing departments. Thus, mining departments should be re-grouped into: transportation, fragmentation and flotation.

O presente trabalho avalia o efeito das camadas de conversão a base de CrVI e CrIII aplicadas na superfície de arames galvanizados por imersão a quente. As bitolas testadas foram 1,24mm, 1,65mm e 3,00mm, utilizando os ensaios de Névoa Salina e Câmara Úmida, avaliando o aspecto superficial dos arames após 1, 3, 6, 24 e 28 horas de exposição ao ambiente agressivo. Pode ser observado que o ensaio de Névoa Salina é pouco indicado para avaliar a oxidação superficial do arame em função de sua agressividade. Os resultados foram melhor interpretados utilizando o ensaio de Câmara Úmida. Inicialmente os arames recobertos por uma camada de conversão a base de CrIII apresentaram desempenho levemente superior àqueles recobertos por CrVI, considerando os mesmos tempos de exposição. Após seis horas os arames galvanizados apresentaram comportamentos semelhantes. O arame galvanizado com maior resistência a oxidação foi aquele protegido com CrIII, porém com o passar do tempo os dois tipos de revestimento se equivalem.

National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers conducted an investigation to quantify sound levels and to determine the amount of sound reduction provided by engineering noise controls installed in a talc processing plant. Baseline sound level and sound intensity measurements were performed at the plant and the measurement locations were recorded for comparison to post-control measurements. Follow-up measurements were then made at the same locations after the initial noise controls were installed. The plant subsequently decided to implement additional noise controls and the researchers returned to conduct measurements for a final analysis of all noise controls. The most significant results showed a sound level reduction in the main mill area from a range of 93-104 dB(A) down to 90-94 dB(A), and a total sound power level reduction of 21 dB(A) for air classifying mill 3.
