Gypsum wallboard manufacturers in the United States shipped 3.18 billion m2 (34.2 billion sq ft) of wall-board products during 2004 versus 2.93 billion m2 (31.5billion sq ft) in 2003. Following a historic high production of gypsum wallboard products in 1999, production decreased in 2000. But it has steadily increased during2001 through 2004. Wallboard production in the United States increased about 8.6 percent in 2004 from 2003. Following several years of a “building boom” of new wallboard plants and the expansion of the manufacturing capacity of several existing plants, 2004 was a relatively quiet year. However, several new plants and capacity expansions were announced or are in progress during 2004.

Rare earth ferrosilicide is a versatile alloy mainly used to control the detrimental effects of sulfur in steel and to modify graphite structures in cast iron. The aim of this study was to determine the optimum conditions to make rare earth ferrosilicon alloy using a preconcentrate produced from a bastnasite type of ore present in the Beylikahir-Eskisehir region of Turkey. This concentrate contained 23.5%REO, 41.37% CaF2, 10.69% BaSO4, 8.50% CaCO3, 4.18%Fe2O3, 2.83% Al2O3, 2.74% SiO2, 1.20% P2O5 and small amount of other oxides. The initial metallothermic reduction of this concentrate using ferrosilicon and aluminum in a graphite crucible placed in a muffle furnace gave very low recoveries due to the difficulties encountered in adjusting the slag composition, temperature and amount of additives. Therefore, two batches of rare earth oxide concentrate containing 61.1% and 81.7% cerium oxide, respectively, that were procured from a Turkish glass producer, were used to optimize with respect to temperature, duration, slag-making additives and amount of reducers. In these experiments, smelting and reduction was done in an induction furnace with graphite crucible, and, ferrosilicon and aluminum were added after melting the charge. As a result, there was no difficulty in obtaining a rare earth ferrosilicon alloy containing 35-55% RE, 5-25% Fe and 20-40% Si, with about 80% metal recovery. When the optimum conditions were applied to the preconcentrate, alloys of similar compositions were obtained with 70-80% recovery. Experiments were also done with mixtures of preconcentrate and rich concentrate, and, recoveries as high as 95% were obtained. Only in this case, to increase the recovery, mixtures had to be charged to the empty graphite crucible after heating the crucible to the required temperature.

Also, interviews with experienced mine operators add much to a complete understanding of what must be done to address methane problems in metal/nonmetal mines. The presence of methane gas in metal/nonmetal mines around the world is more common than one might imagine [Edwards and Durucan 1991]. For example: • The former Soviet republics have occurrences of methane and hydrogen in apatite, gold, and diamond ores, where solid or liquid bitumen occurs in the rock. • Scandinavian iron ore deposits include methane and other hydrocarbons in boreholes that intersect pitch and asphalt within the deposits, and methane and nitrogen in boreholes and fissures in arsenic and sulfide ores.

Mining, waste is growing problem both physical accumulation and increasing toxic uncertainties it presents in the long run. Its value ?zero? is strictly calculated by economy. This mining model begs the question: What is the value of waste & what does it represent to the mining industry? Waste is widely accepted as a ?by product? generated as a consequences of the mining process. The abundant waste accumulation affects society, as receptor, in many ways and the waste piles of materials has no use and no destiny. In reality, this waste is monument of imperfection of the extractive industries worldwide. Our planet is finite and has strict limitations, which mining has traditionally ignored. It is time to design a new system, in which clearly, waste design must be integrated in whole mining process; it has no room to postpone. This paper presents a concept in waste design by which toxic mining waste not only can be rendered inert but also act as nutrient to help balance the ecosystems. This concept calls for extractive industries to pursue EQUILIBRIUM with nature (Geomimic). Also, this concept offers countless gains and opportunities fro the industry and by converting liabilities into assets; mining engineers become the managers and stewards of nature. Also, waste design offers new solutions for proper and sustainable waste management of the mining industry.

A nitretação do aço inoxidável endurecível por precipitação do tipo 17-4PH foi estudada comparativamente pelos processos de Plasma-DC e de Tela Ativa. Os resultados mostram que os dois processos são eficientes em promover a formação da camada nitretada de elevada dureza superficial, cerca de 1300 HV0,025. Entretanto, diferenças importantes são observadas. No processo de Plasma-DC a camada nitretada é composta, além da martensita acicular saturada em nitrogênio, de nitretos de ferro e cromo precipitados pela supersaturação. No processo de Tela Ativa a precipitação de nitretos de cromo é praticamente suprimida e predominando os nitretos de ferro. Esta diferença na sequência de precipitação de nitretos é inferida como sendo causada pela oferta de nitrogênio. Em Plasma-DC a oferta de nitrogênio é suficiente para a precipitação do nitreto de cromo, o que não ocorre em Tela Ativa. A maior profundidade de camada e de endurecimento transversal confirma a maior difusão de nitrogênio em Plasma-DC. Ainda, em ambos os processos a dureza de partida do substrato envelhecido é preservada após o ciclo de nitretação.

The personal dust monitor (PDM) is a new coal mine respirable dust sampling instrument that has the ability to provide accurate end-of-shift and real-time respirable dust exposure data. A hypothetical cost comparison analysis of the PDM with the current MSHA-required coal mine dust personal sampling unit (CMDPSU) was conducted. Some simplifying assumptions were made to create hypothetical cases for analysis. This analysis was limited to respirable dust sampling of one designated operator (DO) and one designated area (DA) for one mechanized mining unit (MMU) which operated one shift per day. Only sampling intervals of the minimum sampling as required by federal regulations and continuous sampling were analyzed. This cost analysis from the company perspective is only one part of an overall cost/benefit analysis that should be conducted at a later date. In this analysis, company-associated costs were examined for both sampling systems. Results show that the PDM, while it has high initial costs of approximately $12,600, may be a cost-effective sampling system for measuring coal mine respirable dust. The estimated present worth cost of conducting the minimum required dust sampling over a five-year life ranges from $5,850 to $19,000 for the CMDPSU, with the higher present worth cost including costs of potential violations incurred. For the PDM, the comparable present worth cost is $14,900 to $19,300, with the lower present worth cost representing a lower capital cost of $8,150 per unit if more than 850 units are produced per year, while the higher present worth cost reflects the result with the higher $12,600 capital cost.

The Quaternary Age aeolian dune sands of the Sibaya Formation on the northern KwaZulu-Natal coast are well known for their heavy mineral content. Although ilmenite, rutile and zircon are the economically important members of the heavy mineral suite, many other nonsilicate minerals such as monazite, xenotime, chromite, magnetite, and spinel that are normally considered to be eitherun common or even rare are also present and these sands provide a unique opportunity to study such complex minerals. Monazite is the general term used for a complex series of rare earth phosphates dominated by lanthanum, cerium and neodymium with monazite-Ce, monazite-La and monazite-Nd recognized as distinct end members of the solid solution series. In addition to the elements indicated by the simplified formulae (LaCeNd) PO4monazite can also accept significant quantities of other elements from the lanthanide and actinide series (Pr, Pm, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy,Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Th, Pa, U, Np). The monazite grains in the Sibaya Formation occur as both composite grains, composed of two or more distinct mineral phases, and homogeneous grains. The net physical properties of the composite grains, and their response to magnetic and electrostatic separation methods are related to size and composition of non-monazite component. However, the homogeneous monazite grains also display significant variation in their physical properties related to their chemical composition.

Hedges Gold Pty. Ltd. mines and processes a lateritic gold orebody approximately 120 km south east of Perth in the Darling plateau. The operation is approximately 26 km from the town of Boddington and 31 km from the town of Dwellingup. Hedges operates under The Western Australian Environmental Protection Act, Licence Number 3183. Presently, nine Limitations and Conditions are applicable to the tailings dam. These conditions apply to maximum discharge/disposal quantity permitted. Hedges mine is located in state Forest within the eastern, low rainfall section of the Darling Range and within the waler catchment area of the Murray River. Ore is carted by 120 tonne haulpacks to the plant. The plant and tailings dam is on private farm land some six kms from the mine.

Diaphragm wall with tie-back cable is widely used for deep excavation, especially in the area with high density of buildings. This paper presents the measured earth pressure distribution on diaphragm wall during excavation. The earth pressure cells used in field were successfully installed in deep slurry trench by a new type of simplified manipulator. The sizes of the deep excavation are 26m X 36m on plane and 9m in depth. The construction site is located between two multistorey buildings at the main business section of Beijing city. In this paper the field measurements of earth pressure distribution and the analyses based on the comparison between calculation and measurement are very valuable to improve the current calculation method for diaphragm wall design.

All mining operations are superimposed on natural hydrologic systems. As a result, mining operations are influenced by natural hydrologic processes and require water management systems to successfully conduct mining activities. Managing water and mining-related solutions is a critical task at all stages of the mine life because of the time-dependent nature of natural and mining-related flows. Effective operation of the mining water management system requires a “systems” approach that integrates the time-dependent effects of all water and mine solution handling components. This paper discusses the concept and application of dynamic systems modeling to address the time dependent nature of mining water management systems.

The main electrophysical properties, i.e., dielectric constant and electrical conductivity, of pure calcite, quartz and wollastonite mineral samples were measured and their triboelectric charge attributes were investigated by contacting minerals particles with different tribochargers made from different materials. In addition the energetic work function values for mineral samples were estimated due to their acquisition charge. Besides, the behaviour of triboelectrically charged of different particle size fractions of mineral samples were inferred. Finally an attempt were made to translate the findings from single mineral systems to a real carbonate ore. The results exposed good prospects to beneficate the examined minerals by triboelectric separation.

Each year hundreds of mine workers are involved in machinery-related accidents. Many of these accidents involve inadequate or improper use of lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures. To mitigate the occurrence of these accidents, new safety methods are needed to monitor access to hazardous areas around operating machinery, improve documentation/monitoring of maintenance that requires shutdown of the machinery, and prevent unexpected startup or movement during machine maintenance activities. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is currently researching the application of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to provide intelligent machine monitoring as part of a comprehensive LOTO program. This paper introduces NIOSH’s implementation of an IoT-based intelligent machine monitoring system to improve safety during operation and maintenance at a concrete batch plant. INTRODUCTION Of the hundreds of machinery-related accidents occurring every year in the mining industry, incidents involving stationary machinery at surface mines continue to be amongst the most frequent [1]. A National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) study showed that the majority of fatal accidents involving stationary machinery at surface mines occurred at sand and gravel (38%) and stone (26%) operations. Of these accidents, entanglement in conveyor components were the most common cause of fatal accidents (48%) [2]. The same study stated that one-third of these accidents involved improper lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures as a contributing factor. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) acknowledged this problem, stating in a recent request for information (RFI) [3]: “Since 2007, there have been 17 fatalities related to working near or around belt conveyors, of which 76 percent were related to miners becoming entangled in belt drives, belt rollers, and discharge points. Factors that contribute to entanglement hazards include inadequate or missing guards, inadequate or an insufficient number of crossovers in strategic locations, and/or inappropriate lock out/tag out procedures. Systems that can sense a miner's presence in hazardous locations; ensure that machine guards are properly secured in place; and/or ensure machines are properly locked out and tagged out during maintenance would reduce fatalities [3].” In response to this problem, NIOSH’s Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) is exploring the potential application of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to provide cost-effective intelligent machine monitoring systems for improved worker safety [4, 5]. SMRD partnered with Central Pre-mix CRH Company (Central Pre-mix) to develop and install a proof-of-concept wireless IoT solution to monitor machinery and conveyors during operation and maintenance. A thermodynamic model of KIVCET lead smelting process has been developed. The model has the capability to predict the distribution behaviors of Pb, Zn, Fe, S, O, As, and heat balance in KIVCET direct lead smelting furnace. The compositions of lead bullion, matte, slag and gaseous phases, and heat balance are calculated. The effect of the ratio between oxygen and feed on the chemistry of the smelt and heat balance of the coke checker has been simulated and discussed. The thermodynamic model also helps to understand the tapping issue of the lead bullion. In this paper, some applications of this model in the industry have been presented.

The relationship between comminution testwork results and the milling circuit that is subsequently selected is not a direct one and frequently involves recourse to databases of past test results. This in itself reflects the lack of a systematic engineering approach in the design process. This paper reviews comminution tests for SAG mill design in an attempt to identify where the essential information comes from that will be used in mill selection. The conclusion is that results from traditional test methods, including obscure and little used procedures like the Mokken test, are more valuable from an engineering perspective than parameters for breakage rate based modelling. Suggestions are made on ways in which existing test procedures can be enhanced in order to generate parameters that can be directly related to characteristics of the milling circuit being designed.

"Human rights can contribute to sustainability in the mining sector, both in theory and in practice. Both human rights and sustainability share a common concern to improve economic prosperity, environmental health and social equity by avoiding negative impacts and conflict, as well as by engaging with and empowering affected communities. Globally, there is an emerging consensus that companies have a responsibility to respect international human rights standards. Respecting human rights means that mining companies are responsible to ""do no harm"" to the people and communities affected by their operations. After a discussion of the Protect, Respect and Remedy framework for business and human rights, this paper illustrates some examples of how international standards for human rights and sustainability interacted in a recent assessment of Goldcorp's Marlin Mine in the Western Highlands of Guatemala. The final section explores how human rights should be integrated into broader policies and procedures for corporate sustainability. This includes integrating human rights into ESIA processes, legal compliance, corporate governance and grievance mechanisms. Pressures on mining companies to respect human rights will not disappear; therefore, a proactive and integrated approach to human rights is a fundamental component of a broader strategy for sustainability"

The heats of combustion of fuels are determined in the laboratory by means of a calorimeter, usually of the oxygen bomb type. A known weight of the fuel is burned in an atmosphere of oxygen under approximately 400 pounds pressure in a heavy metal container-the bomb- and the heat evolved is imparted to a definite quantity of water. From the rise in temperature, measured by means of a Beckmann thermometer, and other data incidental to the determination, the heat value of the sample can be calculated. On paper, the method appears simple indeed, but in practice the determination of the heat of combustion is one of the most difficult of the various coal analyses. This h as led to considerable investigational work in order to obtain formula: whereby calorific values of solid fuels could be calculated from proximate analysis data al one. The proximate analysis of a fuel consists of the determination of moisture, ash, and volatile matter, with fixed carbon by difference. Sulphur determinations properly belong to the ultimate analysis, but in this section of the country, where the sulphur content of the coal is comparatively high, a request for the proximate analysis of a fuel implies the determination of the sulphur as well.

"INTRODUCTION This report contains information on the approximate size of the smallest dust Particles revealed by or the limit of visibility of various microscopic systems. The information was obtained mainly for use in interpreting and evaluating results of number-contentration and particle-size, determinations on, samples of unhygienic particulate matter collected from industrial atmospheres and in developing better methods for determinations nations.Some speculation and even controversy have been published on the limit of visibility of the widely used microscopic system (16-mm., 0.25-or 0.3-N.A. objective, and axial light-field illumination) used in counting the dust in the liquid medium from impinger, 4/ 5/ filter-paper, 6/ and other samples, but little or no quantitative data have been published on the limits of visibility of this or other microscopic' system.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe interest, encouragement, and assistance received from H. Over 800 mines have closed in Australia in the past 25 years. This paper summarizes the data obtained from those closures and includes all Australian States and Territories and all commodities, including metalliferous, coal and industrial minerals. Twenty five percent of the mines closed due to resource exhaustion or depletion; 24% due to high costs, price drops, or declining grades; 8% due to open pit resource depletion (but with underground reserves remaining) or underground reserves depleted (but plans to open cut remainder) and 7% due to receivership or voluntary administration. The environmental, social and economic impacts of these closures are also significant and include acid mine drainage and impact on mine employees. An understanding of the causes of premature mine closure will better equip mining companies and governments to better manage future mine closures, wherever in the world the mines are operating.
