The effect of molecular weight, charge and the presence of the cations Ca2+, Mg2+and K+ on the adsorption of carboxymethyl cellulose on pure talc obtained from Balmat, New York have been investigated. Higher adsorption densities were obtained in the presence ofCa2+ and Mg2+ ions than with K+ ions and higher ionic strength solutions resulted in higher adsorption densities. Changing the molecular weight did not influence the adsorption however increasing the charge (DS) of the polymers resulted in lower adsorption densities.

The stability of floors of large drydocks and wagon tipper sheds at coal terminals is an important matter but quite difficult to solve. Anchors can be used to join floors to foundations thus ensuring the stability of floors by the self-weight of floors and the pull of anchors. In this paper, the author describes the structures and types of the anchors used in the floors of the drydock in Beihai Shipyard and the wagon tipper shed at Shijiu Port, both in Shandong Province China, the determination of bearing capacity of anchors in rock bed of highly weathered granite, the comparison between prestressed anchors and non-prestressed anchors, the construction technology of anchors and the analysis of field experimental data.

The Morenci concentrate leach plant construction was completed and successfully commissioned in October 2007. The plant was designed to operate at medium temperature, 160ºC and pressure, 2,100 kPa. The concentrate leach plant utilized many innovative design features. This paper examines the first year?s operation, the challenges, the successes and the lessons learned. The future plans for Morenci concentrate leaching will also be presented.

The purpose of this paper is to incorporate the dynamic BB model of rock fracture normal behaviour into Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC), and to conduct UDEC modelling to predict stress wave propagation across rock fractures. With the incorporation of new dynamic model of fractures, the UDEC is improved in the capability of modelling wave propagation across fractures. In this study, the case of normally incident P-wave transmission across a fracture is modelled, and the effect of dynamic normal behaviour of fracture is concentrated on. Wave transmission coefficient for wave transmission across the fracture with the dynamic BB model is obtained for various combinations of fracture dynamic parameters, as well as different wave amplitudes and frequencies.

The Rasmussen Ridge phosphate mine is owned by Agrium CPO and operated by a unit of Washington Group International. The mine, located in southeastern Idaho, received the Idaho Inter-Agency Reclamation Award from the Idaho Department of Lands. The phosphate mine, located northeast of Soda Springs, was honored for “Excellence in Ongoing Operations, Soft Rock Mines over 75Acres.” Charles Ross is Agrium CPO’s plant manager. He said, “We are honored to receive this award. This recognizes the commitment and dedication of our employees toward the protection of the environment. I am really proud of the people that work at the mine.”

"Titanium possesses an exceptional and wide-range resistance to chlorides and their compounds when compared to most corrosion-resistant engineering alloys (CRAs) used in the chemical process industry. This natural resistance to chlorides stems from titanium’s protective, tenacious, and readily rehealable titanium oxide surface film, which is chemically stable over a wide range of pH and redox potentials in aqueous environments. This passive film explains titanium’s elevated resistance to anodic pitting, crevice and stress corrosion, and erosion-corrosion in aqueous chloride environments.Guidelines for successful selection and application of industrial titanium alloys are derived from an extensive laboratory test database and more than forty years of industrial/chemical service experience. These guidelines are simplified, and alloy corrosion performance is assessed with respect to four basic aqueous chloride service categories where selection or consideration of titanium is highly merited. An overview of historical titanium alloy applications in chloride-rich environments in a wide variety of process industries substantiates their exceptional chloride tolerance. These industrial titanium alloys are cost-competitive with stainless steels and nickel alloys, readily commercially available, and routinely fabricated and welded in the shop and field via well-established methods."

Abstract : The computation of reliability index or failure probability of slopes can be transformed into an optimisation problem. In high rock slope engineering, it is usually a multimodal optimization problem. The traditional optimization techniques are difficulty to find out the global optimal solution because of their easily falling into local optimal value. Recently, a new kind of bionic algorithm - ant colony algorithm (ACA) - has been used to solve this problem. In this paper, the structure of ant colony algorithm and the transfer probability of ants are modified to evaluate the failure probability of complicated slopes. A new adaptive ant colony algorithm (AACA) is proposed to determine critical slip surface and its corresponding failure probability of complicated slopes. A case study is given to verify the proposed approach. The results show that the presented method has obvious advantages compared with traditional methods. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Die Rechnung des Zuverlaessigkeitindexes oder der Zerstoerungswahrscheinlichkeit kann sich in einer Optimierungsfrage umwandeln, im Bauprojekt an hoehe Gebirgehang, handelt es sich meistens um eine Optimierungsfrage ueber Multi- Spitzenwert. Mit der traditionelle Optimierungsmethode ist es schwer eine umfassende Loesung fuer die Optimierung zu finden wegen des leichte Verfallens in Beschraenkung der Teiloptimierungsloesung. Mit dem neue Bionik- Algorithmus —— Ameisen - Kolonie- Algorithmus wird dieses Problem geloest. In diesem Text hat man eine Strukturverbesserungsloesung fuer das Ameisen- Kolonie -system und die Wahrscheinlichkeit der Ameisenkolonie erwaehnt, und damit wird man die Zerstoerungswahrscheinlichkeit des komplizierte Hangs feststellen. Mit dem neuen Ameisen- Kolonie- Algorithmus kann man die gefaehrlichste Gleitflaeche und die entsprechende Zerstoerungswahrscheinlichkeit herausfinden. Die in diesem Text beschriebene Methode wurde durch Praxis geprueft. Durch die Pruefergebnisse wurde es gezeigt und bestaetigt, dass der neue Bionik- Algorithmus vorteilhafter als der traditionelle Algorithmus ist. Résumé : Le calcul de l’indice la fiabilité ou de la probabilité de ruptures peut être transformé en un problème de l’optimisation. Pour le cas du génie des pentes de haut rocher , le problème se pose en général en l’optimisation de multi-crêtes. Les techniques traditionnelles conduisent facilement à la solution optimal partielle au lieu de celle globale. Récemment un nouveau type de bionique algorithmique a été appliqué pour la solution de ce genre de problèmes, c’est l’Algorithme Colonie de Fourmis. Dans l’article il est proposé de modifier la structure du système de la colonie de fourmis et la probabilité de transfert des fourmis en vue d’évaluer la probabilité de ruptures des pentes de haut rocher complexes, par ailleurs un nouveau algorithme adapté de colonie de fourmis est formulé pour déterminer la surface glissante critique et la probabilité de ruptures correspondante. Les techniques proposées dans l’article sont vérifiées à travers des expérimentations dont les résultats ont prouvé que les techniques présentées dans l’article sont évidemment meilleures que celles traditionnelles.

Os materiais poliméricos são sensíveis a radiação ultravioleta, acarretando mudanças em suas propriedades. Sob esta perspectiva, o presente estudo expôs o polietileno de baixa densidade (PEBD) a radiação ultravioleta por 150 e 300 horas. A avaliação físico-química e a caracterização mecânica foram realizadas para verificar as mudanças macromoleculares produzidas por tal radiação e confirmadas por exame visual. Diante dos resultados, confirmou-se a ocorrência de degradação, através da presença de ruptura de cadeias, além da produção de reticulação, e um sutil decréscimo da cristalinidade. O ensaio de tração confirmou a fragilização produzida pela radiação. O desempenho balístico das placas fixadas por adesivo a base de etilcianoacrilato produziram delaminação, ao contrário do observado nas placas fixadas por silicone.

It is not my intention today to make a series of predictions of things to come. Experience of the past few decades has shown that long-range predictions made be-fore engineering groups usually fall short of the mark; that is, the actual technical achievements in any period tend to surpass the boldest predictions that any responsible engineer would have made, say twenty years earlier.Instead, I will point out some recent accomplishments or refer to research that is in progress or now being planned in order to suggest important trends to be expected in the next few years. Based on this rapidly increasing tempo of achievements you can make your own extrapolations into the future."

Computer modeling of the blasting process can aid in gaining an understanding of the physics controlling the process. The sequence of events in a blast occur so rapidly and in such a violent environment that measurements are still difficult to obtain. Computer modeling using a program such as DMC [Taylor and Preece, 1989a, 1989b] can provide insights into the physics of the rapid and violent events associated with a blast. DMC has been used to simulate crater blasting @‘teece, 199Oc] and the blasting of Oil Shale for modified in-situ retorting [Freece, 1990a, 1990b]. This paper will address the influence that damping has on the velocity distribution in the rock mass during the rock motion phase of a blast. Since velocity distribution is a controlling factor of muck pile shape, damping also conbibutes to muck pile shape.

Long-term closure alternative selection for heap leach pad effluent is a daunting task. Passive water treatment, if designed with enough long-term capacity, can minimize long term O&M while meeting water quality objectives. Leach pad effluent from a 30-acre leach pad at Basin Creek Mine, Basin, Montana was targeted for long-term water treatment using a passive water treatment system. The objectives and results of design and construction are: 1. Design a long-term passive system utilizing existing infrastructure. 2. Construct a field scale pilot test at the mine site.

Sustainable development is one of the central themes of the work of the World Health Organization; chemical safety is one of its important components. For more than 25 years, WHO has had specialized units for assisting member countries in dealing with their problems in chemical safety. For one of the units involved, International Programme on Chemical Safety, a reorientation is in progress to make best use of existing resources, and to prioritise the work to optimally correspond to the needs of the member countries. The risk assessment work of IPCS, and specifically, the work on chromium and chromium compounds, are discussed.

Product designed characteristics like reliability and maintainability affect maintenance cost, service performance, and therefore product support strategy must be defined during design stage in terms of these two dimensions. Furthermore product support and service delivery strategy has considerable influence on the total life cycle cost and the economic viability of industrial systems/products. he paper presents a concept for the development of service delivery strategy for industrial products with a special reference to mining systems. In this paper we emphasize that the strategy for product support should not be centred only on ‘product’ but it should also take into account the service delivery capability of the manufacturers/suppliers and users service organization, users competence and capability, product use location, logistics and infrastructures, etc., to arrive at the best performance and economic results. Such strategy should invariably include services supporting the client apart from considering services supporting the product. The discussion in the paper is based on the experiences from the manufacturing industry engaged in manufacturing of mining systems and the observed trends in technology and management of operation and maintenance of mining systems. This is what I term ... the graveyard end of any Conference. It's almost over. Those of you remaining are either all talked out or past the information overload stage. And some of the sensible? ones have left for more exciting field trips, or gone back to their work-site where they earn their daily crust, or headed off South to another Conference of interest to the Energy sector that is being held currently in Christchurch. But that's OK. I have a thick skin! And neither am I particularly Politically Correct! I am not a miner: I am not involved in the mining industry in a hands on way at all. I am not even an academic. I am not even too sure why I am here ... apart from the fact that I agreed to come! At various times in my life I have been a D istrict Councillor, Chairman of a Regional Council and even an MP. I am a supporter of responsible mining.  All of what I have to say is my own point of view rather than that of either the Coal Producers' Federation or the mining industry. That is not to say that we are often in agreement, but I thought I would clear that point right at the outset. And some of what I will talk about will not strictly be to the topic - it's hardly mind-bending riveting stuff. Well, is it? But obviously because you are still here you have some interest in the topic.

The structural age of the capital mining machinery, representing a part of the system of the Electric Power Industry of Serbia, has been dictated by the initiation and development of open pit coal mines. For example, the oldest bucket wheel excavators were installed some thirty-four years ago, and the average life of the relevant machinery exceeds twenty-two years. Operation of both capital equipment and machinery has direct effects on economic and business activities of open pit mines, and consequently forced us to make a decision and study thoroughly the problem of establishing the optimum exploitation life of capital mining equipment at the open pit coal mines of the Electric Power Industry of Serbia. The aim of this paper is to define and discuss the relative problems as well as to find out the possible solutions and establish the methodology for estimating the optimum exploitation life of machinery. The study was successfully carried out by a team of scientists engaged from and coordinated by the Department of Computer Science of the Faculty of Mining and Geology, University of Belgrade. This paper presents the key observations covering the subject problem. Keywords: stainless steel, AOD refining, side and top combined blowing, mixing characteristics, water modeling The fluid mixing characteristics in the bath during the side and top combined blowing AOD (argon-oxygen decarburization) refining process of stainless steel have preliminarily been investigated on a water model unit of a 120 t AOD converter. The geometric similarity ratio between the model and its prototype (including the side tuyeres and the top lances) was 1:4. On the basis of the theoretical calculations for the parameters of the gas streams in the side tuyeres and the top lances, the gas blowing rates used for the model have more reasonably been determined. The influence of the tuyere number and position arrangement, and the gas flow rates for side and top blowing on the characteristics has been examined. The results demonstrated that the liquid in the bath underwent vigorous circulatory motion during gas blowing, without obvious dead zone in the bath, resulting in a well mixing effectiveness. The gas flow rate of the main tuyere had a governing role on the characteristics, a suitable increase in the gas flow rate of the subtuyere could improve mixing efficiency, and the gas jet from top lance could make the mixing time prolong. Corresponding to the oxygen top blowing rate specified by the technology, a roughly equivalent and good mixing effectiveness could be reached by using six side tuyeres with an angle of 27 degrees between each tuyere, and five side tuyeres with an angular separation of 22.5 or 27 degrees between each tuyere. The relationships of the mixing time with the gas blowing rates of main-tuyeres and sub-tuyeres and top lance, the angle between each tuyere, and the tuyere number have been obtained.

The Mid-Atlantic Ridge in the central North Atlantic and the Gorda Ridge within the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone off northern California and southern Oregon are yielding new discoveries of seafloor hydrothermal mineralization. The TAG hydrothermal field in the rift valley of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge near 26 degree N, 45 degree W has been a site of international collaborative research since the discovery there of extensive manganese deposits associated with low temperature hydrothermal activity in 1973 as part of the TAG (Trans-Atlantic Geotraverse Project). The first high-temperature hydrothermal activity, massive sulfide deposits and vent biota discovered in the Atlantic were found at the TAG hydrothermal field in 1985. Collaborative dive series with DSV ALVIN in 1990 and in 1991 with the two Russian MIR submersibles in the TAG field have found and sampled large inactive sulfide mounds in addition to the previously known active sulfide mound. The active sulfide mound on the floor of the rift valley is about 250 m in diameter and 40 m high with a concentric zonation of mineral types and flow regimes decreasing in temperature from 365 degree C black smokers at the center to white smokers and diffuse flow toward the margins. The recent dive series in coordination deep-towed instrument surveys have delineated a zone extending about 5 km along the lower east wall of the rift valley of inactive sulfide mounds up to a kilometer in diameter. MIR Mound in this zone consists of a central sulfide zone about 400 m in diameter and 50 m high surrounded by a halo of low-temperature deposits to 200 m wide. Inactive sulfide chimneys contain the first primary, free gold grains found at a hydrothermal site on a mid-ocean ridge (P.A. Rona, Y.A. Bogdanov, E.G. Gurvich, N.A. Rimski-Korsakov, A.M. The following is extracted from a report by the author to the International Valuation Standards Committee (IVSC), with minor modifications for the purpose of publication. The author represented the IVSC at the annual session of the Ad Hoc Group of Experts on Harmonization of Fossil Energy and Mineral Resources Terminology. This is a body organized by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). This second session, held in Geneva, Switzerland, achieved an important agreement for advancement toward uniform global standards for the classification of minerals and petroleum reserves and resources. Attendees discussed the possibility of enhancing the United Nations Framework Classification for Energy and Mineral Resources (UNFC) for implementation globally as the classification standard for use in financial reports under the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). Presently, there are between 100 and 200 mineral and petroleum resource classification (or definition) systems throughout the world — a similar number to what there are countries.
