An investigation was conducted to develop columbium alloys with e1evated-temperature strengths higher than those exhibited by more common commercial columbium alloys, and attention was given to improving the oxidation resistance and ease of fabrication. Additions of carbon, aluminum, and chromium were made to some columbium-base alloys, and their effects on workability, recrystallization, oxidation resistance, and mechanical properties at elevated temperatures were explored. The additions were made to take advantage of (1) solid solution strengthening, and (2) precipitation hardening. Three alloys displayed good high-temperature properties with relatively good oxidation resistance at 1,000° C, and tensile strengths from 26,000 to 32,200 psi at 1,400° C. When the properties of these alloys were compared with those of commercial alloys, B-66 and FS-85 (1),4 the outcome was favor-able for the alloys studied in this investigation.

Southern Perú es el productor de cobre más grande del país y una de las 10 principales empresas cupríferas del mundo que mantiene un complejo minero-metalúrgico en el sur del país (Tacna y Moquegua). Sus principales instalaciones son las minas de cobre con sus respectivas concentradoras en Toquepala y Cuajone, las instalaciones de lixiviación, extracción por solvente y electrodeposición en Toquepala, fundición y una refinería en Ilo. En ese sentido, el presente texto señala el análisis del cobre a través del método secuencial como una herramienta que define el modelo minero y mejora los parámetros de extracción de cobre lixiviable de acuerdo con la clase mineral. Asimismo, mejora del diseño mineralógico y geológico, sobre la base de lo cual se planea desarrollar pruebas de lixiviación de acuerdo con las características del mineral y su relación con el IS, como herramienta para estimar las recuperaciones a escala industrial.

This paper discusses the role of mineral-adapted acidiphilic microorganism Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans on the beneficiation of arsenopyrite containing multisulfides (pyrite and chalcopyrite). Adaptation to minerals altered the surface properties of the microorganism. Bacterial adaptation to arsenopyrite and controlled bacterial adhesion to mineral surfaces lead to selectivity in arsenopyrite separation. Bioremoval of arsenic ions (both arsenite and arsenate ions) by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans is also discussed.

Combining action features of explosive shock with those of natural lignocellulosic biomass structure, we have successfully developed a new explosive shock dilatation and separation technique for pretreatment of natural lignocellulosic materials in the laboratory. Based on a brief introduction to the technical background and experimental procedure of this new method, some preliminary experimental results are given and discussed: the scanning electron microscope (SEM) qualitative observation results show that for treated natural lignocellulosic sample such as corn cob etc., their length of fibre bundle shortens, fibre bundle arrange disorders, biomass appearance and structure of samples largely change to be dilatation and loose state. The dilute acid hydrolysis quantitative measure results show that for treated samples, the overall yield of the reducing sugar largely increases, hydrolysis rate of corn cob sample is over 80%, rate and speed of hydrolysis are increased by times.

1.0 PROLOG Since the "end" of the Cold War, revolutionary new research and commercial remote sensing capabilities are being developed that will dramatically change the way we map the earth and address its environmental problems. The technology challenge is not the growth of new environmental remote sensing technologies themselves. It is, rather, how these new innovative observing systems can be accepted and used to the benefit of both the regulatory and the mining communities in the light of present concerns about unknown risks of discovery and liability. The Australian Bureau of Statistics and the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics publish data for a range of industries, allowing a measure of performance to be quantified, called multifactor productivity (MFP), and allowing performance between industries to be compared on a consistent basis. At the time of writing, the last released data was for 2011-2012. For Australia, the plot of mining industry productivity and a basket of the 12 most significant industries in Australia?s economy (including mining) are shown in Fig. 1. For the United States, mining and petroleum and all manufacturing productivity are also displayed in Fig. 1. The trends are as follows: ? The MFP in the Australian mining sector rose 36 percent from 1986-1987 to 2000-2001. There was a 47-percent decline in MFP from 2000-2001 to 2011-2012 (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2011). ? The MFP in the United States mining sector rose 17 percent from 1986-1987 to 2004-2005. There was a 7-percent decline in MFP 2004-2005 to 2010-2011, (Topp et al., 2008).

The accelerated growth of urbanization processes and current environmental concerns brought to light the existing enormous quantity of construction and demolition waste (C&DW). Considering the frequent lack of adequate landfill areas available for the disposal of these materials, their use in the manufacture of ceramic products has been attracting a growing interest from researchers and is becoming common practice, with the consequent relief in public administration concerns for the C&DW appropriate management. This work describes the study of clay-based products added with C&DW collected directly from the construction industry. Samples containing up to 50 wt.% C&DW were uniaxially pressed and sintered in air in an electric furnace (950-1150 °C, 1 hour). Sintered test pieces were characterized by X-ray diffraction, apparent density, open porosity and flexural strength. The results showed that up to 50 wt.% C&DW can be added to the clay material, with no degradation in the final product properties.

The potash industry in Saskatchewan has recently been the focus of much new legislation at the provincial level and, along with other mining industries in Canada, also subject to changes in tax legislation at the federal level. As a result, the industry presently operates under (a) provincial production controls, a prorationing scheme; (b) a new provincial reserve tax on potash only and; (c) a new federal income tax applicable to all mineral industries. The prorating scheme dates back to 1970 and emerged as public policy because of the excess supply situation faced by the international potash industry towards the end of the sixties. This caused special problems for new mines in Saskatchewan and the provincial government decided to intervene. The new tax legislation at provincial and federal levels, both introduced within the last four years, reflects a belief that insufficient revenues accrue to the public sector from natural resources. All mining industries in Canada, including the potash industry, have had their tax positions completely reversed during these four years. Traditionally the mining sector in Canada has been a recipient of substantial tax incentives and has enjoyed low tax rates. This has changed and the mining sector is now one of the most heavily taxed sectors in the economy. In addition, the mining sector has moved from a situation where its rapid development was favoured by governments to a situation where this is no longer the case.

The assurance of future raw materials supply to the EU mineral industry has become, in recent years, one of the most important tasks of the EU Commission. It is focused on creation a new mineral policy within the EU zone. One of the starting points for this activity was identification of the mineral commodities that are critical for the sustainable development and technological progress. The paper presents the glance to this problem from the National Member level. Domestic mineral reserve base as a possible source of critical raw materials for the EU was shown. Poland cannot be considered as its resource base. The source of these raw materials are not only scarce in Poland, but also they are not produced, and their demand is now - and according to forecasts is going to be in the future - met by imports. The raw materials in question are not considered exactly critical for Polish economy, but they are of limited economic importance. On the other hand, their growth is a best opportunity and at once the need to the future sustainable development.

A RATHER detailed description of the entire plant and leaching process was given in a paper recently presented to the Institute,1 so this paper will cover briefly only the crushing practice of the New Cornelia Copper Co. for the year, 1918. The ore, which is mined by steam shovels and loaded in side-dump cars, passes through two crushing plants. These crushing plants were constructed to crush the ore required by a leaching plant of 5000 tons daily, capacity, during a crushing period of 16 hours. The primary plant reduces to less than 3 in. (76 mm.) and the secondary plant, to ¼ in. (6.35 mm.), which is sufficiently fine for satisfactory percolation of solution through the ore in the leaching tanks, and to give good extraction. The ore is then conveyed to the leaching tanks by a system of 28-in.. (71-cm.) belt conveyors. On the way to the leaching tanks, it passes through an automatic sampling plant, where a 1-per cent. sample is taken. From the primary crushing plant, the ore is conveyed by two 36-in. (91-cm.) belt conveyors to a 10,000-ton steel storage bin, with a reinforced-concrete flat bottom. The ore discharges from the bottom of this bin onto four 20-in. belt conveyors, which deliver it to the four units of crushers in the secondary crushing plant. There is no storage bin between the mine and the primary crushing plant. The ore breaks very coarse, is very hard, and contains a great many boulders, some as large as 4 ½ by 4 1/2 by 10 ft. (1.3 by 1.3 by 3 m.). Jams form in the bowl of the coarse crusher in the primary crushing plant, as a consequence, and are freed by means of an immense steel hook operated from a 40-ton electric traveling crane.

In view of the singleness of traditional methods about international petroleum (Brant) price forecast, ten main factors that affect international petroleum price are fully analysed. Based on time series method and multivariate linear regression method, the simulation model with the theory and idea of system simulation is firstly established. And this forecasting system realizes visual operation under the environment of MATLAB/SIMULINK. So this article tries a new way for further exploring petroleum price’s running law and guiding its forecasting practice. Hindered-bed separators are recognized as low-cost, high-capacity devices for both classification and density separation; however, since their inception, there have been few significant advances in the fundamental technology. Recently, Eriez has shown through modeling and pilot-scale testing that the innovative approach to feed presentation offered in the CrossFlow teeter-bed separator provides improved metallurgy when compared to traditional hindered-bed classifiers or single-stage coal spirals. This design feature prevents excess water from entering the separation chamber and disrupting the overall fluidization flow rate within the teeter zone. Most recently, a side-by-side industrial scale evaluation has verified that this technology improves overall efficiency and simultaneously reduces the separation cut-point. With regards to coal processing, data from full-scale units indicate that the CrossFlow offers good separation efficiency, high unit capacity, and metallurgical results consistent with laboratory- and pilot-scale separators.

This paper initially was to be on the design, construction and operation of the Lucky Friday mill. However, this subject has been pretty well covered in some of the mining publications in the past few years - specifically Mining Congress Journal for April, 1961 and Mining World for March, 1962- : In order to avoid too much repetition, we decided to present in this paper a comparison of the Lucky Friday mill constructed in 1959, and the Mayflower mill built by us in 1962. During the past three years Hecla Mining Company has constructed two relatively small mills: The Lucky Friday mill at Mullan, Idaho 750 T/day; and the Mayflower mill at Heber, Utah - 450 T/day. These mills were engineered, designed and constructed by Hecla, using principally our own personnel, with very little outside (contractor) labor employed. This paper presents a comparison of some of the interesting features of these mills, and where differences occur, it discusses the reasons for the various differences. It compares such points as the testing program, physical layout of the plant, construction costs, the grinding section, the flotation section, tailings disposal, metallurgy, recovery, grades, operating costs, etc. To help illustrate, and to compare these features, we will project pairs of slides showing each of the two mills. The REFLUX Classifier is used to perform particle separations on the basis of density utilising a set of parallel inclined channels positioned above a vertical fluidised section. In continuous mode, feed enters part way up the vertical section, while fluidisation water is introduced from below. Lower density particles are conveyed upwards and collected in an overflow stream, while high density particles segregate onto the inclined surfaces, settle to the base of the system and empty via an underflow stream. Pressure transducers are used to measure the suspension density in the vertical section. This suspension density is maintained by a pneumatically controlled underflow valve to maintain a target suspension density or ‘set point’.Previously, Galvin et al (2010) demonstrated the significant improvement achieved via a new laminar-shear separation mechanism, achieved by utilising closely spaced inclined channels in the REFLUX Classifier. For the separation of low-density coal particles from mineral matter, a channel spacing of 6 mm proved effective; however, for the separation of gangue minerals from much higher density minerals such as iron ore, the shear-induced lift needs to be even higher. In this paper, we examine the influence of two different channel widths on the continuous processing of an industrial iron ore feed in the REFLUX Classifier. It was found that when moving from 6.0 mm to 3.0 mm channels, the ability of the system to reject coarser gangue material and retain finer high density material across a particle size range from 0.125 to 1.0 mm was increased, resulting in a higher grade product.CITATION:Hunter, D M, Zhou, J, Iveson, S M and Galvin, K P, 2017. Collophane, cryptocrystalline fluor-apatite, is examined as a substrate for plant water and wastewater remediation. The attenuation of Fe3+, Fe2+, Hg2+, Pb2+, and Cd2+ is presented as a function of metal ion concentration, amount of collophane, initial pH and conditioning time. TCLP results for Pb2+contaminated collophane are presented. Mechanisms of adsorption for divalent and trivalent species are suggested.

The perlite industry in the United States continued to undergo rapid change and increased competition last year as it did in 2002. U.S. production in 2004 was 510 kt (562,000 st),an increase following five consecutive years of decline (Table 1). Perlite is exported to Canada and to the Pacific Rim. These partially offset imports. Perlite imports from Greece to the eastern and Gulf Coasts of the United States declined by about 22 percent after reaching a record 240 kt (264,000 st) in 2003.But their market remains protected by high rail rates from western U.S. plants. Minor imports of perlite persist by Termolita from Mexico.

"The Rabbit Lake uranium deposit is located at 58° 11’00”N.. 103°42'36""W., close to the west side of Wollaston Lake, and approximately 800 km north of Saskatoon. The orebody is hosted by Aphebian Wollaston Group rocks, initially deposited as a series of shallow-water marine sediments consisting, in part, of carbonates and possible saliferous petites. Metamorphism during the Hudsonian Orogeny, peaking at about 1850 Ma, recrystallized the sediments to upper amphibolite grade paragneisses. This was accompanied by partial anatexis. The waning stages of Hudsonian orogenesis appear to be marked by minor granitic intrusive activity.The post-Hudsonian period was marked by a long interval of physical and chemical erosion, resulting in the unroofing of the Wollaston metamorphic complex. The entire region underwent extensive lateritic weathering under tropical to subtropical conditions. Carbonates were especially vulnerable and, in the Rabbit Lake area, suffered extensive solutioning with accompanying formation of collapse breccias. Old zones of weakness also underwent periodic reactivation.It was during this period that uranium was leached from the surrounding meta-sediments by oxidizing meteoric waters, and transported into the karsted and fractured rocks of the Rabbit Lake doline.Athabasca Group sediments eventually covered the deposit, their diagenesis taking place at about 200 °C and 900 bars. This allowed the partial to complete recrystallization of the initial mineralization, resulting in a minimum age of 1281 ± 11 Major ""first""-generation pitchblende. Periodic fault/fracture reactivation modified the hydrologic regime within the deposit, resulting in episodic mobilization and recrystallization of pitchblende and other uraniferous species. This is clearly shown in the open pit at the present time: uranium is being mobilized and recrystallized on damp pit walls as bayleyite and liebigite due to the modification of the hydrologic system by mining activities.The uranium mineralization occurs mainly as fracture fillings, coatings, and impregnations within breccia zones and intensely altered metasediments. Lesser mineralization is intimately associated with phyllosilicates which form the matrix of a carbonate-col/apse mega-breccia. The primary ore mineral is pitchblende, consisting of five generations, and from which a large suite of secondary uraniferous minerals have formed. On a gross scale the metal content of this deposit appears to be simple, consisting almost exclusively of U, but minor Ni, As, Cu, Se, Fe and Co are also present. The eastern limit of the mineralization is defined by a vertically-dipping microgranite dyke - breccia complex, containing high-grade uranium values. The orebody is truncated to the west and at depth by the Rabbit Lake reverse fault. Minor mineralization occurs as fracture fillings in unaltered plagioclasite in the footwall of the ore body. Precipitation of uranium from solution could have taken place by a number of processes. A mobile reductant (methane, carbon dioxide, etc.) may have been generated from graphite present in some of the host rocks of the orebody. Sulphides are also a common accessory and may have aided in the formation of a reducing environment. Phyllosilicates may have acted as adsorbants for uranium, allowing for its fixation. This metal has also been incorporated into the phyllosilicates themselves."

O Alto-Forno é o principal equipamento em uso para a produção do ferro gusa. Para a redução do minério de ferro em gusa são alimentados pelo topo do alto forno a carga composta por minério de ferro, carvão vegetal ou coque e calcário. Durante o processo de redução os gases redutores ascendentes entram em contato com a carga e geram pós no interior do alto forno. Para que esse resíduo não seja lançado diretamente na atmosfera é necessário que haja a recuperação desse material particulado e uma das etapas é a lavagem da poeira do gás de alto-forno que permite a separação dos particulados sólidos na forma de lama, denominada lama de alto-forno. O objetivo do presente trabalho é a caracterização físico e química da lama do alto-forno a carvão vegetal de uma siderúrgica integrada localizada na região sudeste do estado do Pará, e assim fornecer subsídios para estudos que busquem o reaproveitamento desse resíduo através da sinterização para torná-lo um material mais reativo e dar uma destinação ecologicamente correta e de acordo com as normas ambientas. Para isso, foram realizadas, em laboratório, análises como a granulometria, massa específica, difratometria de raios - x e fluorescência de raios - x. Os teores dos óxidos predominantes foram 57,33 % de Fe2O3, 8,14 % de CaO, 5,6 % de SiO2 e 1,37 % de ZnO).

The ability to predict the performance of an explosive relies upon having a Reaction Rate Law and knowing its functional dependence upon various parameters of the explosive. In particular, emulsion explosives have a matrix cell size and may be sensitized with glass or plastic microballoons. The cell size dependence should. be very nearly the spherical grain burning dependence upon web that appears in the reaction rate laws for ball gun powder. The dependence of the reaction rate law upon the parameters of the sensitizing microballoons has been explored using hydrocode analysis of the pressure field produced by the collapse of a microballoon. This pressure field provides an increase in pressure in the vicinity of the microballoon which, in turn, increases the rate of reaction within this field and provides the energy release that must be achieved in order to have a steady state detonation for use as a blasting agent. Hydrocode analysis allows the determination of an approximate functional form for the reaction rate law which shows the dependence upon the size, type, and quantity of microballoons. This presentation includes the theoretical background and the determined functional form of the reaction rate law.

Field tests concerning a fog mesh method for fog removal are discussed. The first tests were performed at the Pyhäsalmi Mine, Finland. As this study gave promising results, further studies were completed at the Orivesi Mine. The results of these most recent field tests are presented and the two studies are compared. The Orivesi test set consisted of four materials. These included air filter fabric, fibrous filter fabric, a plastic greenhouse mesh, and an aluminium mosquito net. The variation of the Orivesi results was more noticeable than what was found previously. The best fog removal effect of all tests was achieved with the aluminium mosquito net, while the plastic green-house mesh performed worst. The humidity reduction by aluminium net was more profound than any of its precedents. More mesh materials will be tested in the near future.
