One of the ways of trauma and occupational diseases level reduction is noted to be the improvement of the labour protection measures planning. As an indicator for prospective trends determination in the labour protection planning improvement sphere economic risk has been proposed to be used. The trauma and occupational diseases analysis based on the correlative and regressive methods has been carried out for the “Vorgashorskaya” mine of Pechora coal basin. Trauma and occupational diseases occurrences frequency and economic losses value have been estimated. Trauma and occupational diseases economic risk distribution analysis has been presented in respect to the different subdivisions and occupational groups of “Vorgashorskaya” mine.

A lot of talk has been generated about the so called ‘Internet of Things’ (IoT) and its potential to transform the way we interact with our homes and devices. But the true potential and value of IoT is not going to be realised by the general consumer but by businesses.This paper outlines the application of IoT in mining and how it is a natural extension to the base networks becoming commonplace in both surface and underground mines. The potential for ubiquitous monitoring throughout a mining operation at low capital and support costs will transform the ability to monitor, analyse, report and manage all of the key processes involved in a mining operation.Importantly, the paper will discuss the practical applications that the IoT offers mining and explain how this really is transformative technology, not just the latest buzz words from the information technology (IT) world. Industries are challenged to meet increasingly stringent regulations for selenium and metals. Cost-effective treatment is required to minimize the economic impact of environmental compliance. Low-cost biological treatment of selenium can be achieved passively using biochemical reactor cells composed of natural organic media components such as wood chips, sawdust, hay, composted manure, and peat. The reactor cells create an anaerobic microenvironment for biological reduction and sequestration of selenium and other metals. Biochemical reactors can be combined with constructed wetlands for flow equalization and to remove the organic byproducts in reactor cell outflow. Passive treatment reduces capital cost and operational effort compared to more expensive and complex physical and chemical treatment. Recent pilot and full-scale projects by mining companies and by the US Bureau of Reclamation demonstrate that passive treatment can achieve compliance with selenium concentrations over a range of flows and environmental conditions. Case histories of passive selenium treatment systems and their key findings are provided, and prospects for future applications are summarized.

As part of an investigation aimed at mitigating the hazards caused by abandoned mine openings, the Bureau of Mines conducted a series of electromagnetic surveys in the Galena, KS, area of the Tri-State mining district. The application of monostatic ground-penetrating radar (OPR) and inductive electromagnetic methods for detecting and delineating hazardous mine openings and attendant features was demonstrated to be feasible for shallow mine workings (i.e., less than 35 ft) occurring below flat-lying areas. Accurate determinations of depth to a mine roof appeared to be limited to roughly 20 ft using the GPR method. Features such as mine voids, fractures, and zones of subsidence were located beneath the Mainstreet (State Highway 26) site using the GPR system. Both the GPR and inductive electromagnetic techniques satisfactorily located mine openings and pillars at the Hell's Half Acre site. Geophysical interpretations were supported by exploratory drilling and mine maps.

Blasters face a long list of tasks to execute daily—from vehicle inspections to blast design and layout, hole loading and tie-in, securing the site, and finally, safely executing the blast. Good practices and, in most cases, regulations and requirements necessitate documenting their work, specifically their blast report. While some blasters use paper forms, others use electronic means to streamline the process. The authors have served as attorneys and expert witnesses in representing companies and individual blasters in numerous administrative and legal matters in which documentation of the blaster’s work was both critical and detrimental to the effectiveness of defending their work. This paper discusses in a case-study manner the authors' observations concerning good blast report format, specific observations around electronic and paper report completion, record-keeping, seismograph setup and recordkeeping, video and photo documentation, internal auditing, and other topics related to documenting the blast. The paper aims to serve as a discussion guide for blasters to improve their blast record-keeping process, develop better practices that effectively document their work, and allow them to defend their work should a claim arise concerning their operations.

Gold Fields acquired an option to purchase the Cerro Corona Project, located in Hualgayoc, Cajamarca Department, Perú, in December 2003. In January 2006, the option was taken up and the transaction closed. During the intervening months, Project development occurred against the backdrop of a Presidential election, increasing national social activism and environmental regulation, rapidly escalating operating and capital costs, as well as unprecedented demand for engineering and technical skills. Project “Lessons Learned” are outlined and discussed in the context of an evolving strategy.

Annoyance, fatigue, and musculoskeletal pain have been reported during prolonged exposures to propulsion-generated vibration in military propeller aircraft1. The objective of this study was to determine the vibration mitigation properties of selected seat cushions and the effects of occupant seating posture during exposure to higher frequency multi-axis vibration associated with military propeller aircraft. Methods A Navy E-2C Hawkeye crew seat was mounted onto the Six Degree-of-Freedom Motion Simulator (SIXMODE). Six seat pan cushion configurations were tested during exposure to an E-2C vibration signal collected in the field1. Seat pan cushions 1 – 5 were used with the original E-2C seat back cushion. Cushion configuration 6 included seat pan cushion 5 with a prototype seat back cushion. Triaxial accelerometer pads were mounted onto the seat pan and seat back cushions to measure the vibration entering the human. Data were collected for seven subjects seated upright with their backs in contact with the seat (back-on) and not in contact with the seat (back-off). Spectral analysis techniques were used to analyze data at the two dominant frequencies associated with the propulsion system (propeller rotation frequency (PRF) ~18.5 Hz, and blade passage frequency (BPF) ~73.5 Hz). Overall accelerations were also calculated between 1 and 80 Hz. Vibration Total Values (VTVs) were calculated using the weighted seat pan and seat back (back-on only) accelerations and compared to the comfort reactions given in ISO 2631-1: 19972. Results In general, the highest accelerations observed at the seat pan occurred in the fore-and-aft (X) direction at both the PRF and the BPF for all cushions and both postures. The most pronounced effect was at the BPF in the X direction, where all configurations showed significantly lower seat pan accelerations than configuration 1 (original E-2C cushion) with the back-on posture. Configuration 5 was the exception with the back-off posture (Fig. 1A, Repeated Measures ANOVA, P<0.05). The most pronounced effect of posture occurred at the PRF in the X direction, where all cushion configurations showed significantly lower seat pan accelerations with the back-off posture (Fig. 1B). All configurations except configuration 2 showed similar VTVs as compared to Configuration 1 (Fig. 2, P<0.05). Configuration 2 tended to show the lowest weighted acceleration levels. Goldcorp Inc. has mining operations and exploration projects throughout Canada, the United States, Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras; as well as partnerships in Argentina and the Dominican Republic. In rural areas of developing countries it is very common to have mining operations surrounded by diverse communities consisting of people with limited, or no formal education. This is fertile ground for anti-mining NGOs to cultivate. The limited educational backgrounds of the people, coupled with a company desire to maintain a low profile can lead to a problematic lack of trust between the local communities and the mining company. As part of its commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development, Goldcorp has implemented various programs to build trust at these operations, as well as incorporating this policy into any new projects prior to commencement of operations. This paper is intended to describe two initiatives that have shown positive results for both the communities and the Marlin Mine.

Nigger Hill is in western Lawrence County, South Dakota, and on it is the little camp of Tinton. The Wyoming line runs along the west side of the hill and crosses the ridge which is the hill&apos;s continuation about miles north-northwest of Tinton.

An important aspect of the project evaluation process is the achievement of a clear and quantitative understanding of the primary drivers influencing project value and risk. A business scenario-based approach is required to ensure that the project meets value and risk hurdles over the short, medium and longer term. Adopting an optimising approach can aid significantly in the development of a project concept into a business that is optimal and sustainable in the longer term. Through the application of case studies, based on work performed with various mining organisations during the last five years, this paper will demonstrate how project value and robustness can be optimised. Experience has demonstrated that applying this approach results in significant value improvements and risk reduction û primarily by application of a rigorous, fact-based analysis and optimisation process that rapidly increases management team understanding and insight of key driver of value and risk.

The accompanying sketch shows the interesting position of Salt Lake City with reference to Western mining areas and justifies its title "The Center of Western Mining." In the last twenty years, the area embraced within a circle of 600 miles radius with Salt Lake City as its center has produced 79.87% of the gold, 91.9% of the Silver, 77.47% of the copper, 53.61% of the lead and 26.55% of the zinc produced in the United States, including Alaska. This area also contains the greatest coal deposits of the continent, some of the greatest oil deposits, great iron deposits and many other important mineral resources. The 600-mile circle contained 69% of the active operators of other than coal mines and 40% of the men employed in mines other than coal mines of the United States, including Alaska, for the four-year period ended with 1923.

Since 1973 when the first edition of the SME Mining Engineering Handbook was published, many significant changes have occurred in the US mining industry. The industry went through a fairly prosperous period immediately after 1973, but then many economic pressures came to bear on mining companies, particularly in the metal and coal branches of the industry. These pressures changed both the mining methods used and the general economics of the mining methods. As a result, the industry today is different in many ways titan it was in 1973. A general summary of some of the more important changes that have come about will be provided here as well as some assessment of the effects of these changes on the choices of mining methods. In the metal mining industry, the most significant trends were increased surface mining, the use of larger and more efficient equipment, and increased technology and automation. The primary impetus for these changes was unprecedented competition from foreign producers. In many cases, this competition came about because of the nationalization of foreign mines and the tendency for these mines to become a source of foreign exchange. Most mining operations have been happy to live in blissful ignorance of what their equipment is really capable of. Shareholders have been shown increasing tonnes output per employee (due to rationalising employee numbers). It is now known that the best practice for large mining trucks is 52 per cent higher than average or best practice for excavators is 41 per cent higher than average, or 38 per cent in shovels or 35 per cent with draglines, etc. The data is available. The bell curve of performance is flat. Substantial underperformance is rife. If you are working in or supplying equipment or services to one of the majority of operating mines that donÆt achieve best practice surely you want to know why. Or maybe you donÆt? For many mining people this sort of knowledge could be dangerous to their career so keeping the MD or CEO in the dark is a good option. Many suppliers donÆt want the performance of their equipment benchmarked? Mining consultants donÆt have the data so they are happy to keep guessing. Unfortunately, many Business Improvement or Business Excellence projects are about ticking the participantÆs æcareer boxesÆ. The first step to capacity utilisation is knowing what the capacity is. Even then people and culture will get in the way. People are the biggest hurdle to capacity utilisation. This paper will discuss what the mine of the future (and today) will need to do to utilise the productive capacity of its assets. It is not just benchmarking. It is not just automation. It is not just technology. It is about engaging those people who impact on equipment performance; right from the operator up to the Mine Manager. Doing it better involves a process to facilitate change and a culture which says it is OK to try even if you are wrong.

In the mining and quarry industries, rock fragments are often transported by conveyor belt. To estimate the qualities of the rock fragments (i.e., size distribution and shape), an operator must take samples from the conveyor and manually perform a sieve analysis, which is time-consuming and tedious. Alternatively, an image-analysis system can be used to monitor the fragment quality on a fast moving conveyor belt. However, images of fragments on a fast moving belt vary to such a degree that the quality of any two successive images are not the same, and some of the images are of such poor quality that they are unrecognizable by human eyes. If poor-quality images are directly analyzed by a segmentation algorithm, the analysis will not be satisfactory. To resolve this problem, it is necessary to use an image-classification pro-gram for the automatic selection of fragment images with good quality. Because of this need, an image-classification program was developed and tested both in the laboratory and in the field. Testing of the system on different types of fragments showed that the system works reasonably well.

The use of existing mine records in conjunction with an appropriate classification scheme can be used successfully to identify and characterize the composition of existing waste rock facilities where traditional approaches based on sampling may be impractical or costly. This paper describes an alternative approach used in an acid rock drainage investigation at a porphyry copper mine with numerous waste rock dumps of varying ages and composition. The approach integrated detailed lithologic and mineralogic information about the ore body and overburden materials with records of pit development and dispatch. A waste rock characterization matrix was developed for the site to meaningfully classify lithology and mineralogic composition of the waste rock. The approach resulted in a focused geochemical testing program and facilitated interpretation and application of the test results.

This paper addresses establishment of an experimental system for measuring biodynamic response (BR) of hand-arm system at the NIIH in Japan. BR measurement system at the NIIH is nearly equivalent to NIOSH installed system. The feasibility of the system is examined through the apparent mass (AM) measurement of the empty handle and a set of calibration masses. Apparatus The grip force was measured by using the handle shown in Fig. 1. The handle has two force sensors (KISTLER, 9212) and one accelerometer (PCB, 356A12). A low-pass filter with 5 Hz cut-off frequency was used to the grip force from measured force signal. Figure 2 shows BR measurement system in this study. The push or pull force at the handle was measured by using the force plate (KISTLER, 9286AA). The grip force and the push / pull force were displayed on a monitor. The shaker (IMV, VE-100S) is used to vibrate the hand-arm system along the forearm axis (Zh direction) (ISO 10068, 1998; ISO 5349-1, 2001). In most situations force actions for operating tools are expressed by grip, push, pull and combined these actions. These actions can be simulated in the test system. AM was obtained by performing H1 estimator in the PULSETM system (B&K, 3109) and it is denoted at the one-third octave band center frequencies. [ ] Methods In order to investigate the reliability of the system, AM measurement of the handle was performed. It is assumed that the handle is rigid in the upper limit of adoptive frequency range in this study. This assumption is validated in AM measurement of the empty handle. A pseudo-random vibration in the frequency range of 10 to 1,250 Hz was used and its amplitude is 1.0 (m/s2)2/Hz with a flat power spectral density (PSD) in the experiment. Measured AM includes the mass effect of the measuring cap in a subject experiment. Compensated apparent mass AMc(?) is obtained by Eq. (1) 1-2.
