Growth characteristics of Co-rich crusts from the Western Pacific have been approached. The thick crust shows 3 structural layers: compact upper layer, porous middle layer, and compact lower layer. The middle and lower layers have obviously different microscopic structure, color, and luster. Preliminary study of Calcareous nanofossils in one crust shows that the crust began to grow since Paleogene. The porous middle layer was formed from late Miocene to late Pliocene (Ca. 0.5 ~ 11.9Ma) and the compact lower layer was formed from late Paleocene to late Oligocene (Ca. 56.3 ~ 23.2Ma). The sedimentary hiatus of a 14.26Ma was observed between the middle and lower layers. The boundary between them to be Oligocene/Miocene (O/M) shows an important message on growth age.

TWO intermediate phases enter into equilibrium with the primary solid solutions of titanium.' The TiMn2 phase was identified by Wallbaum2 as of the C14 type isomorphous with MgZn2. Contrary to Maykuth, et al.,¹ the phase occuring at about the 50-50 atomic proportion has been shown to derive from a peritectoid reaction.:' A 30 day anneal at 900°C of an alloy containing 52 wt pct Mn developed sufficient of the new phase to give a clear and predominant diffraction pattern. The powder pattern was taken in a 14 cm diameter powder camera using filtered Cu Ka radiation. In all, 75 lines were recognized and measured. Interplanar spacing and observed intensities for the first 26 of these are given in Table I.

The coal-bearing areas of Kansas cover approximately 18,800 square miles (23 percent of the state's total area). Coal in Kansas ranges from lignite to high volatile bituminous, located principally in the south-eastern part of the state. Kansas reserves are estimated to be 987,500,000 tons, approximately 0.2 percent of U.S. reserves. Coal beds generally occur in thin seams up to five feet thick. The overburden-to-coal stripping ratios in Kansas are among the highest in the nation, typically 20 to 1, with some ratios up to 35 to 1. The first commercial coal mining operation in Kansas opened in 1865 at Fort Scott in Bourbon County. As in other states, coal production in Kansas increased during the industrial revolution, and then fell as industry converted to alternative fuels. Production peaked in 1916 and 1917, with annual production of 7,250,000 tons. Coal production today is by surface mining methods. The Kansas regulatory program was approved April 14, 1982; the Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved February 1, 1982; and the emergency program authority was approved January 10,1989.

This paper outlines a framework for ensuring the success of the implementation phase that follows research and development of new mining technologies and systems. It is based upon recent and past lessons learned that have demonstrated the critical challenges to effective technology transfer, which frequently receive inadequate attention within the culture of the mining business. The paper focuses on mining automation implementation challenges and then outlines a Roadmap which is proposed as an integrated framework to deal with the key aspects of people, process and technology. This framework is built upon: assembly of a Strategic Team to develop a Roadmap; fully understanding the business requirements of the technology initiative; defining Key Performance Indicators in a Balanced Score Card; performing a Stakeholder Analysis to identify the affected groups; and finally developing a master Project Plan to execute the Roadmap.

The behavior of non-sulphide gangue in chaloopyrite flotation circuits has been investigated. Plant and laboratory tests were carried out on five different ores, and linear relationships were found to exist between the rates of recovery of water and free nonsulphide gangue in the concentrates although there was evidence from pilot plant tests that these were linear approximations to parabolic curves over the limited regions which were observed. There was evidence that the free non-sulphide gangue enters the concentrate by hydraulic classification and a classification function has been proposed to define this behavior. This function is suitable for inclusion in a mathematical model of the process.

When production targets are not being reached it is essential to determine what the operating problems are so that remedial action can be taken. It is also imperative that all persons who are part of the production stream within a mining operation know and understand what the operating difficulties and delays are so that corrective action is effective. This includes the supervisors, superintendents, planning team members and managers. A new approach recently adopted at Hilton Mine to help identify these operating difficulties has been to use short-term schedules and reports known as the Daily Shift Schedule Controls (DSSC), and the Daily Weekly Operating Reports (DWOR) respectively. These control elements have enabled management and supervisory staff to accurately identify labour inefficiencies and ultimately determine capital resources.

Introduction Typical dragline rigging includes several sets of ropes: hoist ropes, drag ropes, dump ropes and boom suspension ropes. The drag and hoist ropes contribute most to the dragline operating cost. Both work in very difficult conditions and wear out rapidly. As a result, frequent rope changes are required resulting in substantial cost and productive time loss. Although performance of rigging has a profound impact on dragline efficiency, there are no common, industry accepted standards related to its selection, operation and maintenance. Little information on the subject is available and the practice differs widely throughout the industry. The performance of drag and hoist ropes depends on: •rope construction that should closely match requirements of the specific application, rope operating conditions and its maintenance and • correct definition and application of the rope discard criteria so that full advantage of the rope can be taken without endangering safety of its operation. This paper reviews the present practice related to all these factors. Its findings are based on the wide survey of the present industrial practice. Field survey In total, 33 North American dragline applications were surveyed of which 17 were Bucyrus-Erie machines, 10 were Marion and six were Page (now P&H). Most of the draglines were stripping overburden in coal mines, but the survey also included some unique applications such as phosphate mining in Florida and oil sand mining in Alberta. Hoist drive power of the surveyed machines varied from 300 to 7775 kW (400 to 10,400 hp). Drag drives varied from 300 to 5815 kW (400 to 7800 hp). Boom lengths varied from 37 to 110 m (120 to 360 ft). Bucket sizes varied from 5 to 96 m3 (6 to 115 cu yd). The hoist and drag ropes installed on the surveyed machines were supplied by 10 rope manufacturers and differed widely in type and construction. Most common rope strand constructions included standard strands, Seale, Warrington, Warrington-Seale and Filler-Seale. Results of the survey [ ] Working conditions Working conditions of hoist and drag ropes are quite different. The first cope primarily with bending on rope drums, point sheaves and deflection sheaves, and with tension force imposed by the bucket and its load. The drag ropes are exposed to severe abrasion at the pit crest, and to severe bending and crushing at fairleads, all while coping with tension forces imposed by resistance of the bucket to dragging. Bending of drag ropes at house rollers and at rope drums is of minor importance for their performance. Differences in working conditions result in different wear patterns, which make it feasible to install discarded hoist ropes to further serve as drag ropes. The hoist ropes wear primarily due to fatigue breaks of wires, while the drag ropes are subject to severe abrasion of outside wires, rope deformation and internal wire-strand breaking. The last is often indicated by the reduction of rope diameter. The summary of working conditions for the surveyed draglines is shown in Table 1. For simplicity, Table 1 does not include the data on rope bending at the fairleads, nor at the deflection rollers and house rollers. Similarly, Table 1 does not include the data on drag rope bending (other than that on the rope drum), as its influence on rope life is insignificant in view of severe abrasion and internal wear taking place elsewhere. DP - diameter of boom point sheaves. d - rope diameter x - mean value of the measured parameter. s - standard deviation of x B/d - average bending ratio of ropes B/d =(D+ DP)/2d n - operational safety factor of the rope (rope stength) x (number of ropes) n(bucket load + bucket weight)] In terms of D/d ratio, the working conditions of hoist and drag ropes are similar to that in other related industrial applications. However, the safety factors of the dragline ropes are lower, which requires them to carry relatively large tension forces. Education in the mineral engineering professions is in the same flux and turmoil as is the entire minerals industry. Overcapacity in some areas, undercapacity in others, and the constant fear of substitution plague education as well as industry. The exercise in long-range planning that The Society of Mining Engineers has undertaken gives an excellent opportunity to examine the problems and the opportunities in minerals engineering education. Charge to the Committee The Educational Activities Committee was asked by the Long-Range Planning Commission (LRPC) to examine SME's future role with respect to "education policy, role and organization, education department, education board, continuing education, short courses, and extension courses." This examination is timely. It follows a reorganization of SME's Education Board designed to make the Board more efficient in its operation, more responsive to the needs of education, and more active in the setting of Society policy on education. In addition, the roller-coaster cycle of boom and bust experienced by the mineral industry in the last decade has been shared by the minerals schools and has created enrollment problems that need to be addressed promptly. Within SME there is much experience on educational issues to draw from and many problems to solve. Major Premise The committee is emphatic in espousing the philosophy that SME should support, in word and in deed, the highest possible standards that can be maintained by the minerals schools. As guardians of the various mineral engineering and scientific professions (geological engineering, geophysical engineering, mineral engineering, mineral processing engineering, and mining engineering), it is appropriate for the Society to be a watchdog for academic standards. One member of the committee put it succinctly, "We need to educate engineers and technologists, not muckers." A vital and profitable minerals industry needs professionals educated by good teachers, equipped with the most modern available methods, techniques, and knowledge, and challenged by their education to be innovative contributors to their chosen profession. Such education occurs only if it takes place in an institution that is vital and challenging. SME can enhance the quality of its membership if it works to maintain the standards of the schools that graduate new members. Education does not end with the award of a degree. It is appropriate for SME to strive for continued technical quality of its membership. To this goal, SME should maintain its attention to the process of licensing professional engineers, and it must continue and expand its efforts in continuing education for the membership. Recommendations for Action The following recommendations were submitted by the committee and then amended slightly by the full commission. The recommendations have support from the SME Board. • SME Education Coordinator and Staff Department of Education - Staff support for education should be provided by someone with experience in engineering education who would be appointed as SME Education Coordinator for all educational activities: accreditation, continuing education, student affairs, and liaison with mineral schools. The Board has approved an Education Coordinator and the position has been filled. • Advisory Committee on Education - SME should recognize, by amending its committee structure, that functions important to education are filled by SME-appointed representatives to the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), its Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC), and Technology Accreditation Commission (TAC). It is suggested that these persons, plus the chairman of the Education Council, plus two other persons appointed by the SME Board, form an advisory committee on education. A new cell construction was designed for the study of the electrochemical behaviour of additives in conditions that simulate real copper, electrorefining. The behaviour of gelatine and thiourea was studied by applying different electrochemical methods, i.e. polarization resistance and voltametric measurements. In this study, individual galvanostatic electrolysis experiments were carried out for 120 hours. The organic additives were introduced to the electrolyte at certain intervals and their concentration was varied in the range &om zero to four ppm. An optical microscope was applied for the examination of copper cathode deposit microstructures. The results show that gelatine has a polarizing effect on the deposition potential of copper whereas even small amounts of thiourea depolarize the electrodeposition of copper. The maximum inhibitor efficiency of gelatine was obtained at a gelatine concentration of slightly lower than two ppm. When both gelatine and thiourea were present in the electrolyte, the depolarizing effect of thiourea exceeded completely the polarizing effect of gelatine. If chloride ions were added to gelatine and thiourea containing electrolyte, the electrochemical behaviour of the system was altered drastically. Chloride ions resulted in the prevailing of polarization effect caused by gelatine while the depolarizing effect of thiourea disappeared in this system. The polarizing effect of gelatine increased until chloride ion concentration of 30 ppm was reached. Also, the above electrochemical phenomena could be detected in the optical examination of copper deposit microstructure.

Comments on novel methods of grinding are presented for discussion. Recent developments in the field of classification are briefly reviewed. A systems analysis approach to grinding circuits is discussed. Finally, a point is made for establishing a group within the industry with the purpose of developing a comprehensive evaluation of grinding research and development."

Strain-type rockbursts, or strainbursts, are characterised by a localised violent failure. Their cause is attributed primarily to the sudden release of strain energy, which accumulates in a volume of highly stressed rock as a result of mining activities. Examples of such phenomena are crown/sill pillar bursts created in the mining process, pillar crush in room-and-pillar mining, face ejection in drift development headings at depth, and floor bursts associated with deep shaft sinking. The paper describes a simple method for the assessment of crown pillar bursts in steeply dipping ore deposits which are extracted by the overhand cut-and-fill method. The method is based on a theory previously established by the author to help assess the need for a remedial solution such as pillar destress blasting. Basically, the mining-induced energy storage rate (ESR) in the pillar is compared with the critical strain energy to come up with the so-called burst potential index (BPI).

The control of converter slag chemistry and slag viscosity has played an important role in optimizing converter operations. A thermodynamic model of copper P-S converter and a viscosity model of converter slag have been used to predict the chemistry and viscosity of converter slag. The effect of oxygen potential, SiO2/Fe in slag, detection of slag blow endpoint, and temperature on slag viscosity, liquidus temperature of converter slag and skimming operation has been discussed. Some applications of the industrial operations have been presented.

The 53 countries that constituted Africa in 1991 accounted for a significant portion of total world output of a number of mineral commodities. However, total output for the continent declined for many major mineral commodities produced compared with that of 1990. Also, Africa's share of total world output of these commodities generally declined. (See tables 1 and 2.) The most conspicuous declines were for cobalt and copper owing to mining and metal processing difficulties experienced by the world's two largest cobalt producers, Zaire and Zambia. Phosphate rock output declined primarily owing to a sharp fall in production from Morocco, also a leading world producer. Morocco's state corporation for phosphate production experienced marketing problems, leading to the decline.

A evolução microestrutural que ocorre durante o processo de laminação a quente pode ser modelada em termos dos tamanhos de grão da austenita e de suas frações recristalizadas ao longo dos passes. Este artigo apresenta uma metodologia que permite a análise da cinética de recristalização e precipitação durante a laminação, com base na composição química do aço e parâmetros do processo. Essa metodologia pode ser utilizada na criação de modelos computacionais. Neste trabalho, as simulações apontaram para a alteração do teor de Nb e da temperatura de reaquecimento da placa como solução para otimizar o processo, resultando em melhorias no produto, ganho de produtividade e redução de custos.

A knowledge of the value of the activity coefficient of cobalt oxide in slag as a function of composition and temperature is necessary if effective strategies are to be devised to maximise the recovery of cobalt in nonferrous smelting processes. This work reviews previous studies and shows that comparison and evaluation of the results is hampered by variations in the choice of standard states for the species. Published results have been recalculated to a common set of standard states with a preferred value for the Gibbs free energy of formation of cobalt oxide. It has been shown that the value of the activity coefficient of cobalt oxide referred to the solid standard state in iron silicate slags is approximately two, at temperatures from 1523 to 1623¦K. It is suggested that some contradictory results are most likely due to errors in the measured partial pressure of oxygen.

Slurry and EPB-shield tunnelling have been successfully applied worldwide in recent years. Under extremely unfavourable geological conditions, however, face instabilities may occur. The present paper aims at a better understanding of the mechanics of face failure. For the case of slurry shield, attention will be paid to the time-dependent effects associated with the infiltration of slurry into the ground ahead of the face. Related topics, such as the stand-up time and the effect of the excavation advance rate, will be discussed. In the case of an EPB-shield, a distinction will be drawn between fluid-pressure and effective pressure in the chamber. The effective pressure can be visualized as a “grain to grain” contact pressure between the muck and the ground at the face. The water pressure in the chamber reduces the hydraulic head gradient in the ground and, consequently, the seepage forces acting in front of the face. The face is thus stabilized both by the direct support of the pressurized muck and by the reduction of the seepage forces in the ground. The paper includes normalized diagrams which allow the assessment of tunnel face stability.

Airborne respirable dust levels on longwalls can be reduced if operators approach the dust control problem in a logical and fundamental manner. This can be accomplished through the proper application and continued use of effective dust control techniques. The Bureau of Mines is currently assessing the effectiveness of longwall dust control techniques in use today to provide mine operators with guidelines for selecting the most appropriate control technology. This paper presents a fundamental approach to the problem of shearer dust control. Three dust control techniques to be discussed are: deep cutting/increased pick penetration for reducing the amount of respirable dust generated; drum water sprays/improved water supply system to suppress the amount of airborne respirable dust; and improved external water spray system, the "shearer-clearer," to push the dust close to the face. The techniques have been evaluated in field trials and have been shown to be both practical and effective in applications to control shearer generated dust.

Diesel powered machines are doing some specific operations in the cyclic order required by the technical process. The dynamics of this process in certain conditions has an essential influence on environmental health conditions in the working area. The main purpose of this paper is to show, using computer simulation, how the movement (dynamic) of diesel vehicles effects environmental health standards and also how to determine the required air quantity for ventilation.
