South Africa is one of the leading producers and exporters of coal globally. A significant amount of the country’s production is obtained from previously mined underground bord and pillar workings. This coal is in the form of pillars and remnants on the roof and floor of the old workings. The good quality coal pillars were left behind as primary support during underground bord and pillar mining operations. Due to the depletion of virgin coal reserves, the pillars and remnant coal are now removed using opencast mining rather than underground methods. However, the secondary extraction of pillars and remnant coal from the old workings using opencast methods entails some serious challenges that have a negative impact on the safety and productivity of the operations, affecting both personnel and machinery. If these risk factors and challenges are managed properly, then the opencast mining operations could remove the pillars safely at recoveries competitive with those of virgin coal operations. In this study we review the recurring challenges affecting opencast pillar mining by means of field investigations and consultations with experts at five opencast pillar mining operations, and evaluate the best practices used to combat these challenges. It was found that each mine has its own unique conditions and challenges.

The Bureau of Mines examined the possibility of a seasonal variation of respirable dust concentration in U.S. coal mines. The first step was to review company and MSHA-inspector dust samples that had been collected during the past several years in 14 selected mines for compliance purposes. Results indicated severe scatter in data; most standard deviations of the dust concentrations measured in winter and summer months were comparable in magnitude with the mean values of dust concentrations for the seasons. Therefore, a detailed statistical analysis was conducted. At the 90% confidence level, the company samples of three mines had winter means 0.15 to 0.54 mg/m3 higher than the summer means; six mines had negligible seasonal variations; and five mines had winter means that ranged from higher to lower than the summer means. Inspector data, however, were too sparse for analysis. In view of both the low frequency of occurrence of a seasonal effect and its wide scatter in several of the mines, the study was ended with the conclusion that seasonal varia-tion in respirable dust levels, in general, is an insignificant factor.

Breakwater Resources Ltd is a Canadian base metals producer with Cu-Pb-Zn operations in Canada, Honduras, and Chile. Two of its operations contain economical gold levels which are recovered in both gravity and flotation concentrates. The gold payable terms in zinc concentrate are poor when compared to gold concentrates or copper concentrates and various flow sheets have been evaluated by Breakwater staff to maximise gold reporting in higher value products. The Myra Falls mine in British Columbia recovers coarse gold in the grinding circuit, part of which is upgraded and sold as a gravity-gold concentrate with the balance being directed to the copper concentrate. A sampling survey showed that there was potential gravity-recoverable gold in the copper regrind circuit. Installing a gravity concentrator in the copper regrind circuit increased the gold grade and recovery in the higher revenue copper concentrate and reduced the quantity reporting to the less well paid zinc concentrate. The El Toqui Mine in southern Chile has distinct high-and low-gold orebodies which are campaigned separately through the flotation plant. The high gold zone yields both a gravity concentrate and an unusual gold flotation concentrate. The gravity concentrate undergoes intensive cyanidation and electrowinning on-site to produce dore, while the fl otation concentrate is sold to gold producers. The zinc concentrate contains signifi cant gold values. The paper describes efforts over the past few years to improve gold returns at Breakwater's operations and highlights the different approaches dictated by the mineralogy of the gold occurrences at these two operations.

Mining is an industry of experimentation throughout human history. Recently, societies are giving a clear message about mining because many projects are being rejected around the world. These refusals are a generational reaction to the activity of mining. In practice, it generates the perception that mining is using the same methodology without attending to the gradual initiation of conflicts. This is in spite of the best engineering and technology of the time that are put in place at the presentation of those mining projects. Some of these rejected projects are geographically distant from each other, but the communities? rejection occurred during many cases under similar characteristics. This concern shows that the current model of mining projects needs to be replaced with a new one: A new Design, one within which the socio-environmental values of this millennium are inherent. This paper describes Mining Project 101 to help the industry to set the highest and cleanest standards for mining. It also presents its aspects to sustainability and nature, which provides the principles and procedures for designing, planning, and operating mining projects with sensitivity to nature. It offers methods of diagnostic, remediation, and extraction while at the same time preventing and preserving a physical, chemical, and biological equilibrium of nature. This emerging process will be a step up from having a mining industry unaccountable to the socio-environmental conflicts it perpetrates and will abandon the ?cosmetic? repair on the caducity of traditional models in today?s practice. A tower-like magnetic system comprising eight permanent magnets was installed at the center of a flotation column to separate chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite minerals. A cyclonic flotation was installed within the underpart of the column to separate the pyrrhotite from the gangues. A three-product magnetic flotation column was fabricated to create a magnetic field and a cyclonic zone. The products were Cu concentrates, pyrrhotite concentrates and tailings. The theoretical magnetic field strengths and the magnetic forces were calculated. The results of the flotation experiments showed that the Cu grade increased from 14.20% without the magnetic field to 26.40% in the presence of the magnetic field and that the S grade in the pyrrhotite concentrates increased in the presence of cyclonic flotation. The separation efficiency of this magnetic flotation column was evident. Therefore, this three-product magnetic flotation column may have a potential application, due to its high separation efficiency.

This report describes in detail a unique occurrence of fersmite, (Ca, Ce, Na) (Cb, Ti, Fe, Al)2 (0, OH, F)6, which occurs as small anhedral inclusions and intergrowths with a tantalum-free columbite found in the metamorphic complexes of Ravalli County, Mont. Chemical and crystallographic data along with the physical and optical properties agree in general with those given in the original description of fersmite from the Ural Mountains of Russia. X-ray diffraction data not given in the original description and more specific optical data have been determined. The Montana fersmite, now established as the second occurrence of this rare calcium-columbate mineral, was discovered during a routine Bureau of Mines mineralogical examination of a prospector's sample.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines formed a team in 1991 to begin developing a long-range research plan for computer-assisted mining that would benefit the metal-nonmetal mining industry. This report details the team's accomplishments, specifically, the development of a model that identifies metal-nonmetal mining research needs that could be addressed by the application of automation technology. The report also provides a summary of automation needs and applications based on visits with mining company representatives. The status and future direction of this work is also presented.

As mudanças no plano estratégico de uma organização reverberam por todos os seus setores, gerando demandas de alinhamento estratégico. Entre estes setores estão os de planejamento e programação da manutenção. O presente estudo de caso descreve uma iniciativa de alinhamento estratégico realizada pela equipe de planejamento de manutenção da unidade Germano da Samarco Mineração S/A, uma empresa de mineração, localizada no estado de Minas Gerais. A partir de uma revisão na estratégia corporativa foram derivados a missão, visão e valores da equipe. Esses por sua vez, serviram de base para uma revisão dos processos de trabalho e para a definição de ações de melhoria. Por fim foram estabelecidos indicadores para mensurar a realização da visão. Os resultados apresentados por esses indicadores comprovam que as equipes de planejamento podem obter e demonstrar resultados significativos através de técnicas elementares de planejamento estratégico.

The reverse cationic flotation is the most widely utilized flotation method for concentrating iron ore. In such a process quartz is often floated with ether amines (R?O(CH2)3?NH2) partially neutralized with acetic acid. However, it is well known that the cationic flotation of hematite does not work well if a certain amount of slime is present in ore slurry. To improve flotation performance, starch is often added to the flotation feed to selectively flocculate and depress the iron minerals and sodium silicate is used to disperse the silica gangue. The present study was conducted to improve the flotation efficiency of iron ore flotation by use of a new type of depressant for clay and iron minerals, i.e., GP clay binder. It is postulated that the GP clay binder minimizes slime adsorption on quartz and hematite particles by agglomerating clay particles to reduce their surface area. It is further theorized that the clay binder helps depress hematite flotation due to its unique chelating ability to iron ion. The results from this study clearly show that the GP clay binder is an effective depressant in iron ore flotation. When it was used as a substitute for corn starch, it increased concentrate grade from 60.78% to 67.67% and increased iron recovery from 71.96% to 72.90%. The combined use of GP clay binder with corn starch produced even better flotation performance, increasing concentrate grade to 67.08% and iron recovery to 78.15% simultaneously. X-ray diffraction has long been used for qualitative and quantitative mineral analysis but Rietveld data analysis is still an under utilized method for mineral exploration and processing applications. In this full-profile approach the structural parameters of each mineral phase, together with experimental parameters, are refined by least-squares methods to minimize the difference between observed and calculated diffraction patterns. The result is a standard-less, quantitative analysis of the mineral abundance in the sample that is more accurate and considerably faster compared to traditional methods. The TOPAS software package combines a user-friendly interface with a unique approach to resolve overlapping peaks. Automated analysis options are also available and significantly reduce analysis time for routine samples. Several examples on a wide range of naturally occurring rock types are shown that illustrate the capabilities and limitations of the method. The examples include several options for the quantification of amorphous constituents like volcanic glasses.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has received several reports of filters igniting when high-temperature disposable filters were used on non-cooled diesel exhaust systems in underground coal mines. Based on laboratory testing (to determine the ignition temperature of these filters, which were loaded in the field with diesel particulate matter, or DPM), MSHA determined a maximum safe operating temperature for high-temperature disposable filters. When the results of the laboratory filter ignition testing were reported to the Coal Diesel Partnership (comprised of members of the Coal Industry, Labor, NIOSH and MSHA) the Partnership charged NIOSH with investigating the safe use of high-temperature disposable filters. This paper reports on the design, fabrication and testing of a unique exhaust gas cooling device and the ability of this device to successfully lower filter inlet temperatures and thus reduce the potential for fires.

"In this paper, the reduction kinetics of low grade hematite ore was calculated. Mineralogy shows that the ROM (run of mine) ore is of low grade hematite ore type, assaying 27.2 wt% Fetotal and with main valuable minerals of hematite. The reduction kinetics shows that the reduction reaction rates of pellets with additive and without additive are all controlled by diffusion through the product layer. The calculated apparent activation energy of pellets with 12 wt% complex additive is 8.55 KJ/mol, dropping 62.23% compared to that of pellets without additive.IntroductionWith the rapid development of iron and steel industry in China, there has been a soaring demand for iron ores in the past decade. The imports of iron ores have increased from 148 million ton in 2003 to 620 million ton in 2010[1]. Therefore, large quantities of low grade iron resources are necessary to utilize in China at the moment. During the past years, extensive research has been carried out on the low grade hematite ores [2-6], such as reverse floatation, gravity separation, high-gradient magnetic separation and direct reduction-magnetic separation. Direct reduction-magnetic separation is an innovation way to treat the low grade hematite [7]. However, the research of reduction kinetics of low grade hematite is few. Some research about the reduction kinetics of reducing iron oxides by CO was studied [8]. The results indicated that the apparent activation energy is 8.0-28 KJ/mol when the reducing reaction is controlled by internal diffusion. The apparent activation energy is 50-75 KJ/mol when the reducing reaction is controlled by chemical reaction. In this paper, the reduction kinetics of pellets was also been studied."

Any hypothesis for the origin of the Otago gold-quartz lodes must account for the following observations. 1. Southeast of Glenorchy, where the schists hosting the lodes are comparatively unaffected by Neogene Alpine Fault deformation, the dominant strike of the vein systems is NW-SE, parallel to the axis of greatest post-metamorphic uplift in the Otago Schist belt (Paterson, 1986). 2. The lodes are fault-hosted, with some developed along steep, low-displacement normal faults (eg Barewood, Bendigo, Nenthorn), implying NE-SW extension, and some developed along low-angle thrusts (eg Macraes) implying, in apparent contradiction, NE-SW contraction (Teagle et al, 1990). 3. The mineralising fluid was of metamorphic origin (McKeag and Craw, 1989), but while some of the lodes developed in a mesothermal environment at considerable depth (eg ~10 km for Macraes), others appear to have formed at very shallow depth (eg <1 km for Nenthorn) (Craw and Norris, 1988). 4. The timing of the mineralisation is generally poorly constrained but postdates the main Rangitata schist metamorphism. It probably initiated during early Cretaceous exhumation and unroofing of the schist belt (140 - 120 Ma?) and may have continued well into the Tertiary (Craw, 1989). Estimates for the relative ages of the different lodes are largely speculative but, based on pressure estimates from fluid inclusion studies, Macraes likely represents the deepest and oldest lode system while Nenthorn (just 12 km to the southwest) is perhaps the shallowest and youngest (Craw and Norris, 1988).

São diversas as razões para se utilizar a realidade virtual (RV) em treinamentos, dentre elas pode-se destacar a redução de custos, redução de riscos ao ambiente e envolvidos e também a possibilidade de reproduzir ou simular situações impossíveis, muito complexas ou ainda em outro lugar ou até mesmo em outro espaço temporal. Nesse trabalho será apresentado um estudo exploratório sobre o uso de RV, realizado uma pesquisa de mercado e apresentado o estudo de caso de como a ArcelorMittal Tubarão vem trabalhando essa tecnologia nos seus treinamentos corporativos no ano de 2019. A aceitação da tecnologia pelos empregados nos treinamentos foi acima de 98% e também foi demonstrado que além de aumentar a atratividade e a retenção do conhecimento, os ganhos foram ligados também a redução de riscos, redução de tempo de treinamento, experimentação de situações críticas, redução de custos, ou seja aumentou a eficiência e eficácia do treinamento.

After attending two clays of technical sessions and enjoying the luncheons and dinners of the meeting, visitors, on the following days, could see the opening ceremonies and events of the Olympic Games, which started on July 30 and continued to Aug. 14. Such d spectacle can be seen only once in a generation in this country.
