Este trabalho se propõe a mostrar os resultados obtidos pela SunCoke Energy Brasil após as mudanças do perfil da mistura de carvões, na qual foram acrescidas criteriosamente as participações dos carvões denominados “soft” e carvões “steam coal”, seguido da redução também criteriosa dos carvões médio voláteis. A consolidação dos dados de qualidade do coque e do custo das misturas comprova que as modificações no perfil das misturas foram bem sucedidas, pois a qualidade do coque se manteve conforme a expectativa dos clientes (Altos-Fornos) e o custo das misturas apresentou uma significativa redução. Todos os testes e experimentos adotados foram embasados na utilização na metodologia denominada “Método e aparelho para avaliar as propriedades de coqueificação do carvão”, também conhecida como Box Test, e ainda no profundo estudo das características dos carvões utilizados e os impactos destes na qualidade do coque.

Between 1990 and 1991, the Bureau of Mines studied the mineral resources of the Kaibab National Forest to appraise the resources present and to determine the types of deposits, and their location. The study included a comprehensive literature search and a limited amount of field investigation of minerals and mining activity in and near the Forest. Small amounts of copper with lesser amounts of gold and silver have been produced from limestone-hosted, strata-bound deposits in the North Kaibab and Tusayan Ranger Districts. In addition to these small metallic deposits, volcanic cinders, pumice, flagstone, and sand and gravel have been quarried in the Chalendar and Williams Ranger Districts. At least ten uranium-mineralized breccia pipes have been identified in the Tusayan Ranger District, One of these, the Canyon pipe, contains a high-grade uranium ore body with associated silver, copper, lead, vanadium, and zinc. The mine permit for the Canyon pipe has been approved and the mine shaft head frame erected.

You here are all familar with the myriad of new laws, some enacted and some pending, that affect the mining industry. These laws, for example those dealing with suspended matter, affect us in Alaska as they do you. Likewise, our friends in government, the Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines, provide us with the same fine services that they do elsewhere. I am not going to speak today about these, but concentrate on one act of Washington, D.C. the impact of which is felt, for now at least, principally in Alaska. A little more than a year ago, I spoke in Spokane on the subject, "Governmental Challenge to Mineral Development in Alaska." I outlined some of the policies of Government which were operating to change the rules under which the industry operates and to alter the relation- ship between government, industry, and the individual. At that time the Native Claims Settlement Act had not been passed, but was on the verge of being so. In reading over what I said in Spokane, I note that I touched on many points where Government was actually challenging mineral development in Alaska. With the passage of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, many of these actions were given a cloak of legality, and machinery was set up to concentrate the drive to tie up the public domain, machinery which will allow govern- mental control and interference with the actions of individuals on something like 90% of Alaska's land surface. This remarkable law is going to affect each and every one of you. Now, a year after its passage, we are only just beginning to see its lesson for the future. It was created by a coalition of powerful groups, who got other groups to support them by promising to deliver something they had no intention of delivering. Alaskan issues are again being used to get various groups not to oppose legislation which will severely harm them. It will help to understand the nature of this new drive if we understand the Native Claims Act and how it came into being.

TO certain people the name of Northern Rhodesia brings only a vague recollection of a distant country somewhere in Africa; to others, it means a big game territory and the opportunity for excellent shooting; to some, a land of sunshine and peace; but to mining men the name signifies the land where the latest discoveries of copper ore are astonishing the mining world and bid fair, in a few years, to make Northern Rhodesia one of the largest copper- producing countries. There is a fascination about this part of the globe that is somewhat similar to southern California, and at the same time there is that feeling of mystery peculiar to a tropical climate. Perhaps it is the isolation, the fear of wild animals, or the influence of an undefinable something which cannot be expressed.

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo caracterizar a temperabilidade de uma liga Fe-Ni-Cr. Amostras do material foram submetidas a temperaturas de encharque de 800ºC e 1100ºC e resfriadas utilizando salmoura e nitrogênio líquido. Para a caracterização do material, foram realizadas análises de EDS, MEV e DRX para se determinar, respectivamente, a composição química das fases, a microestrutura e a transformação de fases que podem ter ocorrido. Os resultados microestruturais não mostraram evidencias de transformação de fase, mas que houve o surgimento de maclas de deformação associadas à ciclagem térmica. No entanto a difração de raios-x para amostras tratadas a 800ºC, com aparentemente segregação intergranular, evidenciou alguma transformação de fase.

"This paper summarizes findings of a two-month investigation in Zambia and Zimbabwe and a one-month visit to Britain in1990-1991. United States contacts have supplied information about that country.Zambia's political unrest and severe devaluation, combined with developments in Namibia and South Africa, enhanced staff recruiting problems in the School of Mines. Zimbabwe has a strong and developing mining department. The departments of mining in the United States and Great Britain are readjusting and contracting due to the reduction in the scale of the industry.The above factors are reviewed and their impact on the countries evaluated.IntroductionCanada trains the majority of its mining engineers domestically but a significant number are recruited from other countries. Examination of the qualifications of 200 professional engineers registered in the mining discipline in British Columbia showed that125 received their first degree from a Canadian university, 33 graduated from institutions in the United States and 42 from the rest of the world including 30 from the United Kingdom. This is a rough and-ready sample but it indicates that developments in the education of mining engineers in the United States and in Britain are relevant to the Canadian mining industry.The recent changes in the world economy and political structure have significant implications for the mining industry and for the supply and training of engineers. Change in eastern Europe coupled with the downturn in mining, especially in the European coalfields, has enabled many engineers to travel freely to the West. The low gold price and the legislative changes in Africa that have improved access to education for Africans with the ability to fill responsible positions, have reduced the South African mining industry’s overseas recruitment to a minimal level. The Australian recession has also lowered their recruitment of mining engineers from other countries."

"The Deep Mixing Methods (DMM), in their current forms, have been employed in the United States since 1986, although an earlier version had seen service from 1954. The earlier developments were strongly influenced by practices in the Nordic countries and Japan, while by the late 1980’s several DMM systems had been developed in the U.S. itself. Since then, DMM has continued its evolution, principally via the challenges of a series of large, landmark projects, but also via distinct, significant technological advances. This paper highlights the key points in the history of DMM in the U.S., and provides an overview of the different methods currently in use.IN THE BEGINNINGIt is a common misconception that the history of applications of the Deep Mixing Methods (DMM) in the United States dates from 1986 when SMW Seiko Inc. — a subsidiary of Japan’s Seiko Kogyo Company — was established in the Bay Area. However, the author believes that Intrusion Prepakt Co.’s patented MIP (Mixed in Place) system had been used, albeit sporadically (about 30 projects are recorded), since 1954 (FHWA 2000, 2001). Ironically, by 1961 this single auger method had been extensively used under license in Japan for excavation support and groundwater control — by the Seiko Kogyo Company. By 1972, the original MIP technique had been succeeded by more advanced Japanese methods, involving multiple augers. Intrusion Prepakt have long since become defunct.The first systematic studies of contemporary Deep Mixing Methods in Japan began in 1967 when the Port and Harbor Research Institute of the Ministry of Transportation began laboratory testing using granular and powdered lime for treating soft marine soils. Fundamental studies continued through the early 1970’s, by which time the development of industrial scale equipment was well advanced, having its first application on a marine trial near Haneda Airport. Coincidentally, laboratory and field research also began in 1967 in Sweden (“Swedish Lime Column Method”) for treating soft clays using unslaked lime. Reportedly the progenitor was a Norwegian, Kjeld Paus, who had made observations on fluid lime columns in the U.S. It would seem that developments in Japan and the Nordic countries proceeded independently until 1975 when the technology leaders from each group (Broms and Boman; and Okumura and Terashi, respectively) presented their — very similar — findings at a conference in Bangalore, India. Limited technical exchanges ensued thereafter.Whereas the Nordic developments continued to focus on the use of dry reagents (cement and lime) and relatively light equipment compatible with operating on and in very soft clays and organics, the Japanese progressed into the use of fluid reagents (cement-based grouts) and heavier equipment for both marine and land-based projects. Thus, by 1986, there were a large number of proprietary (wet and dry) DMM systems in Japan, and a rapidly growing market already by then accounting for over 12,000,000 m3 of ground treatment."

To evaluate methane explosion hazards in longwall coal mines, a CFD model was developed along with a 1/40th-scale, optically accessible model of an underground longwall coal mining section. In this project, CFD models assisted in the design of the physical model to ensure specifications were met for accurately representing the scaling physics as well as to assist in narrowing the experimental matrix and identifying key locations for sensor placement to measure velocity, pressure, and gas concentrations. This research will help develop strategies for methane monitoring that prevent methane ignitions and explosions in longwall coal operations.

Manganese nodule, available in ocean beds, is a potential resource of the future for copper, nickel and cobalt. Recovering only these metals, containing less than 3% by weight, will result in the generation of large amount of residue. In addition to the material losses, several environmental and ecological problems arise out of this. The present study has been aimed at reducing the environmental and ecological problems associated with massive generation of this residue together with utilization of the resources. Presence of ~ 20% manganese and ~16% silicon in the residue has prompted us to check its suitability as a raw material for silicomanganese production. Lower manganese content and lower Mn/Fe ratio of the residue than that required for silicomanganese production has been corrected in this study by suitable blending. The efficacy of blending and its thermodynamic aspects using FACTSAGE software are discussed. The studies conducted indicate viability of bulk utilisation of the residue through silicomanganese production and thereby reducing the burden on environment to a great extent.

A câmara de empuxo do Motor Foguete a Propelente Líquido (MFPL) L75 é composta de uma liga Cobre cromo, classe C18200. A jaqueta de refrigeração, responsável pela extração de calor, é feita de aço inoxidável AISI 316L. No que tange ao processo de fabricação, a união entre a câmara de combustão e a jaqueta de refrigeração é uma etapa crítica, pois envolve processos de união de materiais dissimilares e de componentes de geometria complexas. Este trabalho visa contribuir à fabricação do conjunto motor foguete, por meio da soldagem a laser entre a câmara e a jaqueta. Com o uso de um laser a fibra de alta potência, foi possível verificar que existe uma condição otimizada de solda sobreposta, inox sobre Cu(Cr), com potências entre 1.000 e 1.300 W e velocidades de soldagem de 0,05 m/min a 1 m/min. Embora as análises mostrem heterogeneidade microestrutural, pela dissolução parcial de uma fase na outra, obteve-se níveis de dureza aproximadamente constantes ao longo da profundidade da junta.

The Hoyle Pond underground mine, located in the Porcupine Gold Camp, east of the city of Timmins, Ontario, Canada, is the cornerstone of Goldcorp Canada Ltd?s Porcupine Gold Mines. Cut and fill, shrinkage, longhole and panel mining methods are employed to excavate the narrow gold bearing structures. In order to meet increased flow requirements of 256 m3/s at the mine, a new Fresh Air Raise (FAR) and new surface fans were commissioned in early 2005. The newly acquired fans were capable of supplying the desired volume of air within a range of 1.5 and 2.0 kPa. Upon commissioning of the surface fans the total pressure was found to be exceedingly high; far beyond the design capabilities of the new installation. Consequently only one surface fan could be operated at any given time providing about half the required volume of air. Extensive work was immediately started aimed at reducing the system resistance in order to permit operation of the two fans in parallel and achieve the required mine flows. Larger booster fans were installed in parallel at the 900 m level, a 3 m raise bore linking the 450 and 900 m levels was developed to twin the existing fresh air circuit, and the FAR from surface to the 450 m level was twinned with the original FAR. This strategy, completed in 2012, resulted in a drastic reduction in system resistance and pressures, allowing the two surface fresh air fans to be safely operated in parallel and meeting the flow requirements. This paper describes details of the engineering design work and commissioning of the modified ventilation system, successfully ensuring the long term viability of the project.

As the harbor's importance grew, attempts to improve the channel were made, starting in 1851. This paper discusses the first major organized effort to clear the area, which began in 1869 and culminated in a single large blast in September 1876.

Low-temperature carbonization product yields for 129 coals representative of 12 Utah coalfields were estimated, using regression equations developed from heating value and proximate and ultimate analysis data. It was shown that yields of char, tar plus light oil, water of decomposition, and gas, as well as the gas volume and the heating value of the gas, could be predicted with reasonable accuracy. Published and experimental results from eight Utah coals carbonized at selected temperatures in the 4500 to 1,000° C range were used to determine the effect of temperature on product yields. Carbonization temperature, heating value) oxygen, and volatile matter of coal appear to be the principal variables influencing carbonization product yields. Data presented show that the heating value and the residual volatile matter in low-temperature char may be predicted using relationships developed from proximate analysis data for 220 coals.

STUDIES of grain boundary migration in zone-refined metals have all shown that the rate of migration is greatly reduced by small added solute concentrations. However, it is apparent that a difference exists between boundary migration during normal grain growth and single boundaries migrating in a bicrystal to consume a substructure. To effect the same reduction in velocity in the two cases, much more solute is required for grain growth than for the single boundary experiments. One case is available for direct comparison; both Bolling and winegardl and Aust and utter' added silver and gold to zone-refined lead to study grain growth and single boundary migration, respectively. For comparable reductions in migration rates, about 500 times more solute was required to retard grain growth than to retard the single boundaries. A reason for this difference is suggested here. The rate of grain boundary migration is dependent on solute concentration and must therefore also depend on the solute distribution; i.e., regions of higher solute concentration encountered by a moving boundary must produce greater retardation and thus could determine any observed rate. A dislocation substructure can be the source of a nonuniform solute distribution since it can attract an excess concentration of certain solutes. In fact, it is probable that the solutes which impede grain boundary migration most would segregate most severely to a substructure for the same reasons. Thus a dislocation substructure present in a crystal being consumed could locally magnify the concentration of solute confronting an advancing grain boundary. In the single boundary experiments a low-angle substructure, within single crystals obtained by growth from the melt, was used to provide the driving force to move a grain boundary; in grain growth, no substructure of this magnitude was present. The increased solute concentration at subboundaries should be given approximately by C, = G e c,/kT, where t, is a binding energy and CO the bulk concentration. To account for the difference between the two experiments in the Pb-Ag and Pb-Au cases, C, must be the concentration impeding the single boundary migration, and a value of t, = 0.25 ev is necessary. This is reasonable, even though calculation on a purely elastic basis gives t, = 0.12 ev. because electronic effects must enter for silver and gold in lead. The compound AuPbz forms3 and the metastable compound AgrPb has been reported to nucleate at dislocations prior to the formation of the stable, silver-rich phase.4 Other observations support the hypothesis that a magnified solute concentration impedes the single boundary migration. For example, some crystals were grown by Aust and Rutter at concentrations of ~ 0.1 wt pct Sn and 2 x X at. pct Ag or Au which exhibited a cellular substructure, and in these crystals no boundary migration was observed. It is therefore evident that the higher concentrations at cell boundaries drastically inhibited migration. Inclusions would not have been responsible for this inhibition since according to recent work on cellular segregation,5 no second phase should have occurred in the segregated regions at the cell boundaries for the conditions of growth used, at least in the Pb-Sn system. In the purest lead, only the "special" boundaries observed by Aust and Rutter gave rise to the same activation energy as that obtained in grain growth. It is reasonable to suppose that the structure of special boundaries does not favor segregation at low concentrations and thus solute, or an inhomogeneity in its distribution, would have no effect. Random boundaries, on the other hand, are affected by solute and the substructure would enhance residual concentrations in the zone-refined lead, leading to a higher activation energy. It is clear, even without a detailed theory, that the apparent activation energies and exact solute dependence in the two experiments must be different as long as the non-uniform solute distribution produced by the substructure is important. Recrystallization experiments should also be susceptible to the same kind of local segregation at subboundaries or disloca tion cell walls; a suggestion similar to this has been made by Leslie et al.' Following the arguments presented here, the effects of a given solute concentration would be like those observed by Aust and Rutter if segregation occurred, and like those of grain growth otherwise. This has led to the development and testing of the world’s first fuel cell production vehicle, a mine locomotive. A fuel cell loader is being built and tested.This paper provides an insight into other projects that are being carried out. Some are related to further underground applications, and some to further research, such as refueling options, power plant durability, and vehicle automation.Also outlined is an evaluation of the overall mining applications and advantages this technology can bring to underground mining, including the facilitation of automation and tele-remote operation."

As escórias sintéticas sinterizadas produzidas pela Tecnosulfur contribuem significativamente para a redução do custo total de tratamento do aço nesta etapa.

Este artigo apresenta um modelo matemático desenvolvido para o estudo das temperaturas dos refratários dos fornos de tratamento térmico de tubos de aço em períodos sem produção. Nesses períodos, o forno é desligado ou conservado em temperatura reduzida, visando economia de energia. O modelo matemático desenvolvido utiliza equações discretizadas para o cálculo da evolução das temperaturas em pontos internos do revestimento refratário em função da evolução da temperatura da atmosfera interna do forno. O modelo foi validado em campanhas de medições experimentais. Vários termopares foram instalados em diferentes profundidades do material refratário, e a evolução de temperaturas nestes pontos foi coletada durante duas semanas. A comparação entre modelo e medidas apresentou erro relativo considerado pequeno para todos os diferentes cenários. O modelo permitiu definir a condição de regime quase permanente do forno para garantir retomada do estado produtivo sem problemas de qualidade do produto. E auxiliou também o desenvolvimento de melhores práticas de controle do forno considerando a melhoria da qualidade dos produtos e economia de energia. O estudo foi considerado bem sucedido, e sua aplicação em outros fornos está sendo estudada.

Although virtually every available indicator of world mineral industry activity demonstrated a gain in 1983 relative to the 2 very poor years of 1981 and 1982, the overall prospects for future years seemed far from bright. There were significant upturns in the quantity and value of mineral commodities produced, traded, and consumed in 1983, and many nonfuel mineral prices advanced, although the price advances in current dollars in most instances barely compensated for inflation. The pattern of investment in exploration and development of new mining ventures and new plant construction reflected virtual industry-wide concern that substantial upturns in demand for mineral commodities in the near future were unlikely, at least for most large volume products. The world oil glut continued despite cutbacks in production, and substantial stocks of many other mineral commodities mitigated against growth in total productive capacity, at least among market economy nations. In these countries, development activity at both mines and plants was confined largely to programs aimed at substituting new, more efficient installations for old, uneconomic or marginally economic plants. Among the centrally planned economy countries, the pattern was somewhat different on the whole, but even there, growth in total productive capacity was evidently somewhat restrained, although it seemed questionable whether the restraint was a function of intentional planning or simply an inability to accomplish planned programs on schedule. International political events, particularly the Iran-Iraq war and the unstable situation in the eastern Mediterranean countries (Lebanon, Israel, and Syria), continued to adversely affect mineral industry activities in those areas. Similarly, the internal and international conflicts in Central America negatively influenced mineral industry operations there. In Afghanistan, it appeared that there was some upturn in the very modest mineral industry operations, but industry activities there undoubtedly continued to be affected by confrontations between the Soviets and the local citizenry.

Auxiliary Equipment pumping systems to support primary, secondary and regrind grinding circuits will be the primary focus of this paper. Every grinding system is unique and requires special design considerations for proper application of pumps to transport mill discharge. To satisfy the majority of applications, a new series of pumps has been developed by Svedala, known as World Class Pumps. Selection of these newly developed pumps for each type of grinding circuit will be presented. Specific components of selection are materials of construction, piping system, classification method, material characteristics and slurry characteristics. Both horizontal and vertical pump applications will be reviewed with emphasis on rules of pump piping and sump design.
