In an earlier paper Dean and Hersberger5/ gave preliminary results a d discussed briefly the use in flotation of organic reagents of the type known in the textile industry as "wetting agents.? These reagents are those with a molecular structure comprising a long hydrocarbon chain attached to a. highly molar or hydrorhile group in such manner that ionization is nearly complete in dilute solution and the resultant ionic grouping has a very considerable hydrophile-lipophile unbalance in the structure. As a result of this characteristic structure these reagents are more or less powerful frothers and emulsifiers. Ten the degree of hydrophile-lipaphile unbalance is sufficiently great and specific chemical factors are absent these compounds behave in flotation as noncollecting frothers insensitive to reason¬able changes of pH.

During the last few years a large number of pillars in different mines were investigated. Pillar conditions were evaluated using subjective, empirical, geophysical and numerical methods. A critical comparison of the different methods showed some interesting coherence. This paper concentrates on experiences using the p-wave velocities as an indicator of pillar conditions. Während den letzten Jahren wurde eine große Anzahl von Bergfesten in verschiedenen Bergwerken auf ihren Zustand hin untersucht. Hierzu wurden subjektive, empirische, geophysikalische sowie numerische Methoden angewandt. Dieser Vortrag beschäftigt sich mit den Erfahrungen beim Einsatz der p-Wellengeschwindigkeit zur Beschreibung des Festenzustandes. Le condition géotechnique d’une grand nombre des piliers des mines souterraines différentes sont examinées ces dernières années. On a appliqué des méthodes subjectives, empiriques, géophysiques et numériques. Ce rapport occupe aux expériences avec l’application de la vélocité des ondes de compression pour tracer le condition des piliers.

The 68th Regular Meeting of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute convened in Manor Vail Lodge, Vail, Colorado, and was in session at 10:00 a.m. The meeting was called to order by Past President Max A. Robb, Vice President and General Manager, U.S. Fuel Company, Hiawatha, Utah. Mr. Robb welcomed the members and guests and was pleased with the large attendance. He then introduced President Joseph E. Ward, former District Man- ager, Denver Office, Coal Division, Joy Manufacturing Co. (Retired). A brief biography follows: Mr. Ward is a transplanted Westerner, having spent the greater part of his life in the Eastern and Southern areas of this country. In 1927, he graduated from what was then the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, Pa., with a B.S. degree in Mining Engineering. He dropped out of school for a period between his Junior and Senior years and worked in the coal mines in order to obtain sufficient money to complete his education. Practically all his adult life since graduation, has been spent in or around the coal mines in this country. After graduation, he worked the next 15 years of his life as an underground supervisor, first for the Hudson Coal Co., in Scranton, Pa. and later for the U.S. Steel Corporation in Birmingham, Alabama. He then went into sales, selling basically to the coal mine industry and other mining operations. The last 13 years of his business career were spent as a district manager for Joy Manufacturing CO., 10 years of which were in the Coal Division of their Denver office, covering the Rocky Mountain area. He retired in August 1970 but still retains an active interest in the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute and the Rocky Mountain Coal Industry it supports. He is a widower, his wife, Thelma having died in July 1970. He has two children and six grandchildren.

In conjunction with pilot steamflood tests in the Venango sands of Warren and Venango Counties, Pa., the Marx and Langenheim (4)3 calculations were adapted and programed for digital computer solution to predict test performance. The Monte Carlo technique was incorporated in the calculations to provide values of several variables which could not be adequately defined from available information. The computation methods are explained and the FORTRAN IV program listing is presented. Data and results of the prediction calculations for Venango oil sands are also shown.

This paper describes the sinking and lining of a 14 foot 6 inch finished diameter shaft down to and into the salt of a typical dome of the Gulf States region. The conditions and nature of the strata encountered divide the work into three distinct sections - that in (1) alluvial surface deposits, sunk through by open caisson methods, (2) water bearing rock, directly above the salt, and in (3) salt. This report summarizes the findings of a 9-yr research program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and conducted by the Bureau of Mines, to evaluate refractory liner materials for coal gasifier reactors. Commercially available refractories were exposed to coal gasifier reactor environments, reproduced in the laboratory with a high-temperature, high-pressure test facility, followed by extensive postexposure evaluation. Thirty-six castable or gunnable refractories and cements and 24 refractory brick were evaluated. The behavior of castable refractories reinforced with stainless steel fibers was also examined. Gas environments that were evaluated included steam, H2, CO2, CO, and typical high-and low-Btu gas mixtures. Exposure pressures ranged from 100 to 1,000 psig, temperatures from 5000 to 1,1000 C, for periods from 50 h to 2,000 h. In some exposures, sodium and/or potassium hydroxide were introduced in order to simulate a high-alkali environment. It was found that intermediate-and low-alumina refractories produced from domestically available raw materials, rather than high-alumina refractories produced from imported raw materials, gave the best service as liner materials and that alkali attack was probably not a serious problem with most refractories. Based on the results of this program, good choices of refractory liner materials for gasifier reactors can be made.

ABSTRACT; his paper proposes new methodology to define the pit limits that yield the maximum net present value (NPV) for a deposit, under a given economic scenario and for a given discount rate. The method uses an algorithm that combines dynamic programming and heuristics. It was tested for evaluating deposits with different sizes and various grade distributions. For the discount rate of zero, the results confirm that the economic pit limits are the same as that defined using Lerchs Grossman method. However, when discount rates higher than zero are used, the pit limits differ, yielding a higher NPV.

In an effort to advance the science underlying ground control engineering, researchers with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are frequently involved in field studies at collaborating mines. Often, these field studies involve visiting the mine site, instrumentation installation, and data acquisition. Each of these aspects involve potential risks to NIOSH employees. As an organization whose mission it is to promote the health and safety of mine workers, the health and safety of our workforce is paramount. This paper provides documentation of the best practices followed by NIOSH employees who are tasked with visiting and conducting work at underground and surface mines. This includes Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) approved training, mine site specific training, and hazards associated with all aspects of mining that could be encountered by the employee. Additionally, this paper details best practices associated specifically with instrumentation installation including the mitigation of hazards associated with the proper equipment handling, drilling, and the mine environment. The information showcased in this paper can be used as considerations for industry practitioners such as mine operators, consultants, and academic researchers engaged in the installation of instrumentation in the field. Furthermore, the best practices detailed in this paper can be used as a foundation for agreements made between mine operators and researchers to ensure safety procedures will be followed while on mine property. This will result in enhanced safety of both researchers involved in field studies as well as mine employees tasked with assisting and accompanying those researchers.

The investigation of major and minor coal-mine disasters has been a routine function of the Bureau of Mines since its inception in 1910, and the facts obtained during such investigations have been used as a basis for determining the precautions that the managements and employees of many mines are observing to forestall similar occurrences. The Bureau has conducted research on roof-control and other mine problems, but a comprehensive study of other fatal accidents was not attempted until February 10, 1950, when the policy of investigating all coal-mine fatalities in the United States was approved by Bureau of Mines Director James Boyd. The investigations are being conducted by Federal coal mine inspectors functioning under the provisions of the Coal Mine Inspection and Investigation Act of May, 1941, Public Law 49; and reports covering the investigations are distributed to management, the State mine-inspection agency, and representatives of the mine workers' organization have jurisdiction at the mine.

Coking time was investigated as a function of coal properties, carbonization parameters, and the interactions between these variables. The results indicate that coal properties and carbonization conditions interact to influence the coking time, and these interactions may be determined quantitatively. Prediction equations were developed and used to simulate the effects of bulk density, flue temperature, and oven width on coking times for coals having a wide range of properties. The data presented provide additional information on the carbonization process to permit the coke oven operator to maintain closer control of coke production and coke uniformity.

The rock mass properties such as deformability and permeability are highly dependent on the existence of cracks. The Ratio of Crack Opening Dependency (RCOD) was proposed as a new index to evaluate the deformability of infinite jointed rock mass. The RCOD is defined as the ratio of total amount of crack opening and the total deformation of jointed rock mass. The theoretical relation between the RCOD and the effective compliance of jointed rock mass is discussed and confirmed through two-dimensional numerical analysis by the SC-DDM, together with the applicability to the rock engineering. Les propriétés de masse rocheuse telles que la déformabilité et la perméabilité sont très dépendantes de l'existence de fissures. Le rapport de dépendance d'ouverture des fissures a été proposé comme un nouvel index d'évaluation de la déformabilité de masse rocheuse à assemblage infini. Le rapport de dépendance d'ouverture des fissures est défini comme étant le pourcentage de quantité totale d'ouverture des fissures et de déformation totale de la masse rocheuse assemblée. Cold-wire tandem submerged arc welding (CWTSAW) has recently been developed as a novel welding technique to replace the conventional tandem submerged arc welding (TSAW) process and improve the productivity of pipeline manufacturing. The process involves two electrodes with arcs and one electrically cold electrode. Since heat-input of the welding process is a key factor affecting the properties of the weld metal (WM) and the heat-affected zone (HAZ), and the additional cold-wire affects the heat introduced to the weldment, it is of interest to investigate property and geometry changes in the WM and HAZ when a cold-wire is added to the welding process. In the current research, the CWTSAW process is investigated and optimized by correlating the main welding parameters with the micro-hardness of the WM and HAZ and the geometry of the weld, i.e., the bead width (BW), penetration depth (PD), reinforcement area (RA) and coarse grained heat-affected zone (CGHAZ) area. Three statistical and mathematical methods are employed to optimize the CWTSAW process in terms of the mechanical properties and WM and HAZ geometry of a typical microalloyed steel used for pipeline manufacturing.

O espessamento de lamas no processo de beneficiamento de minério de ferro é de fundamental importância para a recuperação de água de processo, pois 75% da água é recuperada nesta etapa. Além disso, a qualidade da mesma interfere diretamente no bom desempenho das demais etapas do processo, principalmente na etapa de flotação. Vários são os parâmetros que interferem para obtenção da clarificação ideal do overflow, como: pH, dosagem de coagulantes e floculantes, percentagem de sólidos na alimentação, etc. O pH pode ser considerado o mais importante, pois a partir dele é que se determina as dosagens de coagulante e floculante referentes ao ponto ótimo de coagulação reduzindo assim os efeitos negativos na etapa de flotação. O teste de sedimentação em proveta é uma forma simples e rápida de realizar uma análise da velocidade de sedimentação e clarificação da água frente a diferentes combinações dos parâmetros citados. A Samarco resgatou e implementou na rotina dos operadores da área de espessamento a realização de testes de sedimentação em proveta com o objetivo de reduzir o tempo decorrente de coleta de material, envio ao laboratório e espera pelos resultados. Após a implementação dos testes na rotina operacional, observou-se motivação da equipe em redução de custos, embasamento teórico e assertividade na tomada de ações, diminuição de incidência de eventos de má clarificação da água overflow e diminuição do consumo de floculante em cerca de 30%.

Six companies mined fire clay in Missouri and Ohio during 2004. Production, based on a preliminary survey of the fire clay industry, was estimated to be 398 kt(438,700 st), valued at $9.81 million. This was slightly less than the production and value figures from 2003. Missouri was the leading producer state. It accounted for more than 70 percent of the U.S. production. Consumption Domestic producers sold or used fire clay primarily for refractory applications. This application accounted for 79 percent of the market. Refractory products made using fire clay include firebrick and block, grogs, high-alumina brick and specialties, refractory mortars and mixes, and saggers.
