This paper tells the story of using controlled surface and underground blasting methods to excavate hard rock in three areas on Australia’s largest road infrastructure project; the Airportlink Project in Brisbane; worth a total value of AUD $4.8 billion. The project used blasting methods including design, modelling, drilling and loading of the explosives that had never been used before in Australia, some of these were probably unique in the world.

Singewald, 1919; in "Ores and Industry in South America," by H. F. Bain and T. T. Read, 1934; and in many publications on the individual countries. To give a gen.era1 idea of the situation today and possibilities for future output of strategic minerals in several of the countries, the following notes are offered. M.S. Azun I have many objections to the content of the author's paper. Before discussing it, however, I would like to repeat the property of semivariogram function. Second order stationary properties of regionalized variables (ReV's) such as semivariogram function y(h) are perfectly known in geostatistics. Also, the kriging equations in the language of mathematical statistics using second order stationary properties are well understood. However, the way to use the sample (estimated) semivariogram function in any one of the kriging procedures is vague. The sample semivariogram function is given as follows: [ ] where N is the total number of samples, Xi is the sample value at the i - th location, Xi+h is the sample value at the i + h - th location, and h is the distance among the samples. An estimation variance of sample semivariogram function of first lag is smaller than that of higher order lag. The theoretical semivariogram function reaches the variance of samples asymptotically. But this is not easily observable because of the larger variation involved in the estimate of semivariogram function. In general, an estimation procedure is done for h = 0, 1, 2, up to the greatest integer less than N/2, even though sample semivariogram function can be computable through N-1. After estimating semivariogram function, the critical question of how to model sample semivariogram function arises. As seen in the above equation, sample semivariogram function is discrete and can be smoothed by the model being selected. Therefore, modeling of sample semivariogram function is the most important step in geostatistics. It not only smoothes a discrete function but also affects the results of the kriging procedure. When the only aim is to model the semivariogram function, which is the basic point of the author's paper, one can employ any fitting techniques, such as curve fitting, or any arbitrary functions, which are called submodels in the paper. The term "arbitrary function" is used rather than "submodel" because there is no basic understanding of developing them. The author suggests that the sum of those submodels can also be used for the modeling of sample semivariogram function. The combination of any arbitrary functions brings many problems instead of giving an insight of the domain structure considered. The author used two arbitrary functions and the nugget effect in response to sample semivariogram function (Fig. 10). For the same example, he stated that the parameters involved in the mixed arbitrary function model can be accepted when the discrepancy between sample semivariogram function and the model is small visually. For verifying the fitting behavior of any selected model, one should not be contented with the visual satisfactory. Some statistical measure such as goodness of fit has to be used. The author's practice is no more than an exercise in curve fitting without any fundamental understanding or conceptualization of the underlying physical mechanism. Furthermore, the selection of any model is not an easy task if the purpose is the search for the "best" response to the observed second order properties of ReV's. I suggest that the Markovian model (Azun, 1983), on the basis of a theoretical understanding of underlying mechanism, which gives more information about the occurrence of regionalized variables, is used to respond all properties of ReV's. There are a lot of problems for modeling of one-dimensional sample semivariogram function. Thus, it is not appropriate to go to higher order dimensional sample semivariogram function modeling. In the meantime, I would recommend that one can connect the values of standardized sample semivariogram function rather than simple values of semivariogram function in the two-dimensional estimation. The standardized values can be computed in dividing the semivariogram function value by the number of sample pairs involved in each lag regardless of the directions. In conclusion, geostatistics is an interdisciplinary area in mining that uses the principles of mathematical statistics. Thus, it should not violate any probabilistic and statistical rules. When Matheron was developing the theory of geostatistical study in the early years of geostatistics, many mining people had a reservation accepting the geostatistical tools. However, this does not mean that we, the geostatisticians, might try to convince those people using some "strange" tools or rules as some authors implied (Baafi and Kim, 1984). Instead, we have to develop and explain the geostatistical tools staying only in the framework of statistical concepts and properties. Rendu The interactive method proposed by Rendu allows practitioners to develop semivariogram models that take into account not only the numerical information obtained by sampling, but also highly significant additional information that often cannot be quantified. The geology of the deposit - including hypotheses concerning its genesis, sampling methods, assaying methods, and mathematical methods used to calculate the semivariograms - all have an influence on the numerical results obtained and on how these results should be interpreted. If all the information concerning the spatial distribution of values in a mineral deposit was contained in the sample values, it could be argued that statistical techniques alone would produce optimum models. However, this is rarely, if ever, the case. Methods that allow the user to take into account his experience and his geologic understanding of the deposit should not be rejected for the sake of theoretical statistical purity.

A new class of polymeric dispersants for industrial minerals has been synthesized and evaluated. Currently available dispersants give initial low viscosities at high mineral loadings, however slurry viscosities can rapidly double or triple on standing over the first several days. The new dispersants give low initial viscosities that are more stable and maintain a lower viscosity for at least one month. The new dispersants are made possible by controlling the polymer molecular weight distributions during their manufacture such that essentially all of the dispersant is adsorbed onto the mineral surface, preventing depletion flocculation.

Orebodies of the Renison Bell - Mt. Bischoff tinfield in Tasmania are stratabound, conformable lenses of massive cassiterite-bearing pyrrhotite, with underlying discordant, fault-fracture-controlled and more siliceous ore. The deposits occur in eugeosynclinal, trough-deposited sedimentary and mafic volcanic rocks which are stratigraphically equivalent to diff erentiated volcanic rocks that contain volcanogenic massive base metal sulphide deposits in a parallel arc to the east. Textures of the massive pyrrhotite ore suggest that it has undergone metamorphic recrystallization. Although the massive ore contains both monoclinic and hexagonal pyrrhotite, a study of a few samples from one orebody suggests that their distribution is stratigraphically controlled, with the monoclinic variety abundant only at the base. The distribution pattern of rare-earth elements in massive ore is similar to that of volcanogenic massive base metal sulphides in New Brunswick, and suggests that mixing of sea water with exhalative hydrothermal brines occurred during ore deposition. Tin is a common accessory element in many volcanogenic massive base metal sulphide deposits providing strong evidence that it, too, is transported and deposited by volcanic affiliated hydrothermal brines. Sedimentary rocks containing the massive orebodies are fine grained, thinly laminated, compositionally banded and of mixed chemical sedimentary-tuffaceous origin. They include finely recrystallized chert, carbonate-rich and pyritic varieties; and soft sediment deformation structures in these rocks suggest that dense sulphides deformed underlying, less dense chert prior to lithification. Close to ore the chert becomes massive and coarsely recrystallized, as does the carbonate, which is here strongly enriched in Fe and Mn. Apatite is present in pyritic, cherty and carbonate-rich beds and in the ore itself, in all of which it shows a similar pattern of rare-earth element distribution, suggesting that it is of marine sedimentary origin. These deposits have traditionally been considered as epigenetic replacements of favourable carbonate horizons by hydro thermal flu ids derived from later Devonian porphyritic intrusions. Some of these intrusions have associated tinbearing greisens. The above relationships suggest, alternatively, that, like massive base metal sulphides, the tin deposits were of original syn-sedimentary origin. Circulating hydrothermal brines generated during early Cambrian eugeosynclinal subsidence and tectonism rose through steep fault-fractures, there giving rise to the discordant orebodies, and were discharged on the sea floor, where the massive pyrrhotite lenses were precipitated with the associated cherts and carbonates. In some places, Devonian intrusions remobilized the earlier deposits, forming greisens and newepigenetic veins. Finally , the geologic selling of these deposits, in trough deposited sedimentary and mafic volcanic rocks, suggests another favourable environment for massive sulphide exploration which is quite different from the domal felsic volcanic environment so heavily favoured currently in North America

"The flowsheet for the Voisey’s Bay mill had to meet the challenge of processing an ore containing high pentlandite and chalcopyrite values in a largely pyrrhotite/troilite matrix. In the 1994-97 period, circuit development focused on making a high-grade copper concentrate and a relatively low-grade nickel concentrate. However, in 1998 a circuit with copper concentrate, high-grade nickel concentrate and a Ni/Cu middlings concentrate was specified. Following a three year project delay, work resumed on the flowsheet in 2001, and the target for the overall grade of the nickel concentrate was raised from 14% to 20% nickel. To achieve this target triethylamine tetramine (TETA) and sulfite pyrrhotite depressants were used in an all lime circuit. It later became evident that, with appropriate selection of collector and adjustment of the circuit by the addition of a scavenger on the scavenger cleaner, it would be possible to approach the grade of concentrate required without the use of pyrrhotite depressants. The recycle of water and the contained thiosalts was also proven to be instrumental in raising the grade.Construction and commissioning of the mill were fast-tracked with start-up of the mill in September 2005 some six months ahead of the original schedule. Ramp-up of both throughput and metallurgy was faster than any other recent nickel installations with tonnage being limited mainly by concentrate dewatering due to the higher than initially planned ore grades.INTRODUCTIONNickel was discovered in the vicinity of Voisey’s Bay by Chislett and Verbiski working for Diamond Field Resources in 1993 and the Ovoid deposit was delineated in the winter of 1994/95. By the end of 1995 the Ovoid had been well explored and at that time was thought to have a reserve of at least 30 million tonnes with an average grade of 2.83% Ni and 2.0% Cu. Drilling to the east of the Ovoid had indicated the presence of significant mineralization. In June of 1995, Inco Limited bought a 25% share in the Voisey’s Bay Nickel Company (VBNC) which was a subsidiary holding company set up by Diamond Fields. Inco also bought 8% of Diamond Fields and negotiated the right to sell all the nickel produced from VBNC for twenty years as part of this agreement. In April 1996, Inco bought the 75% of VBNC shares that it did not own."

The scope of this paper is such that it was deemed advisable to group the contents into several main sections. They are: Section 1. Geography and Geology. Section II. Historical Review. (a) Mining and Smelting in Alabama. (b) Milling. (c) Summary of Milling Research. These two sections are primarily a bibliography and summary of the research on the Birmingham Red Mountain ores up to the middle 1040's. Section III. Status of the Birmingham Iron Industry. This sect ion points out the extent to which the findings of the iron-ore research have been applied on a commercial scale. Also, a very brief description of the dependent and allied industries is included. The value of the Birmingham iron ore is greatly enhanced by the proximity of coal and dolomite. Thus the coal and coke industry and the dolomite industry are closely allied with and to a large extent dependent upon the possibilities of economic utilization of the Red Mountain iron ores. Section IV. Beneficiation Investigations of the Red Mountain Iron Ores. This is a record of the most recent, hitherto unpublished work of the Southern Experiment Station of the Federal Bureau of Mines, Tuscaloosa, Ala., on the chemical and physical composition not only of the Big seam but of most of the iron-bearing rock strata of Red Mountain.

The ball mill in closed circuit with hydrocyclones is an industry standard, and well known methodologies exist for equipment sizing, selection and design. However, the potential to improve the capacity of ball mill circuits by replacing cyclones with screens has been recognised for many years and recently has been successfully realised, thanks to developments in fine screening technology. Proper methodology for equipment sizing and selection is required to capitalise on this opportunity, but there is currently insufficient information and few guidelines available on how to design such a circuit. This paper discusses the differences between ball mill circuits closed with cyclones and with screens. A methodology is described for equipment sizing and selection for a circuit closed with screens, and the laboratory testing requirements are described for low grade base metal ores and magnetite ores. An economic evaluation is also presented for a case study demonstrating the potential benefits of closing a ball mill circuit with screens.CITATION:Jankovic, A and Valery, W, 2013. It is proposed that a waste rock dump be constructed on slopes consisting of soft colluvium and weathered Chim Formation mudstone at the Porgera Gold Mine, in Enga Province, Papua New Guinea (PNG). Geolog- ical, geomorphological and geophysical investigations were conducted in support of geotechnical studies to assess the physical character of the 6km2 site. Geomorphological studies focused on the extent and nature of colluvium cover and landslide activity. Detailed ground traverse mapping resulted in classification and delineation of eight terrains and seven material types. Seismic refraction and resistivity profiling, combined with drilling, provided subsurface data. Results were presented as standard profiles, coloured contoured sections and plans. Subsurface features, including deep colluvial channels, buried cliffs, slump blocks and buried alluvial channels, were identified. Results of the combined investigations allowed designers to model the colluvium/ bedrock surface and identify critical areas of deep, mobile colluvium and weak bedrock. A design approach was developed which accounted for the morphology of landslide systems and distribution of colluvium types.

A radiação solar apresenta uma enorme variedade de aplicações de engenharia, dentre elas, a conversão em energia térmica em concentradores solares. Os tubos absorvedores dos concentradores solares podem ser recobertos por cromo negro, com o objetivo de otimizar a absorção energética e a durabilidade. Esse trabalho é parte de um estudo complexo sobre esse tipo de recobrimento. Foram desenvolvidos filmes de cromo negro por eletrodeposição sobre aço inoxidável AISI 304 e tratados termicamente a 600°C por 2 horas. Os filmes foram caracterizados antes e depois do tratamento térmico, utilizando-se microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV), espectroscopia de energia dispersiva (EDS) e difração de raios X a baixo ângulo de incidência (GAXRD). Além do cromo, observou-se deposição de cobalto e elementos residuais do banho eletrolítico. O estudo da estrutura cristalina mostrou formação de óxidos após tratamento térmico. Microestruturalmente, foram observados filmes com estrutura lamelar ou nodular. O estudo permitiu sugerir modificações do banho eletrolítico, do substrato e métodos adicionais de caracterização.

"This paper examines the economic advantages of tuning the operation of a differential Cu-Zn flotation circuit as a function of metal prices. Three operating strategies are considered in the analysis: 1) the operation of the circuit at planned copper and zinc concentrates grade with maximum recovery of both metals; 2) the operation of the Cu circuit at maximum copper smelter return per ton of ore and of the Zn circuit at a maximum zinc smelter return per ton of ore; and 3) the operation of the circuit at maximum copper and zinc smelter return per ton of ore. The second strategy tunes the copper circuit independently from the zinc circuit, while the third strategy tunes both circuits simultaneously IntroductionMetal prices play a very important role in the mineral industry (Malhotra and Dowling, 1991). In many cases, metal prices can be the basis for the GO/NO GO decision of a mining project (Malhotra and Dowling, 1991; Apostolides, 1983; Davis, 1996). This direct impact of metal prices on company revenues is highlighted in many annual reports. The 1995 Noranda Annual Report indicates that a variation of 10% of the copper price impacts its yearly revenues by $25,000,000. Some mine operators claim to mine stopes as a function of metal prices (Liimatainen, 1996; Hartman, 1992). This impact of metal prices is also recognized by mill operators that seek strategies to tune ore processing circuits to maximize revenues from the concentrate they sell to smelters (McKee, 1991; Barker et al., 1989; Hales and Ynchausti, 1994; Cipriano et al., 1995). In many cases the problem of tuning the operation of an ore processing circuit is complicated by the fact that the ore contains two or more valuable metals which have to be recovered into separate products. The Agnico-Eagle (Robitaille and Cousin, 1995) and Barrick East Malartic (Pelletier, 1996) Cu-Au mines are examples, as well as the Cu-Pb-Zn Brunswick mine (Shannon et al., 1993) or the Cu-Zn Louvicourt (Whiteway, 1995) and Selbaie (Wright, 1995) mines."

Blast vibration data, such as PPV are usually scattered. In many cases, plots of PPV versus the charge weight scaled distance are so scattered that useful trends from different blast designs cannot be identified. The scattering of the data may be attributed to the inaccuracy of the PPV measurement, the definition of the scaled distance from a multiple-hole production blast, and the measurement of distances and charge weights. The error from vibration measurements is one of the major contributors to the scattering of the plots. If accurate monitoring is conducted, improved design options may be identified. This paper documents two case examples that compare different vibration sensor couplings. The first case shows mounting accelerometers at spots that protrude from the ground, compared with the sensors that were mounted on a flat ground surface. The second case compares data from loose-sand buried geophone with that from sensors coupled to the ground using concrete blocks.

This Bureau of Mines report is a background study of severance taxes on mineral production. The rates, bases, and other features of State severance tax legislation as of March 1978 are presented, as are the amounts of State severance tax collections for fiscal year 1977, Some statistical comparisons between severance tax collections, total State tax collections, and total value of mineral production in the States involved are presented to portray the relative importance of severance taxes both in State tax revenue systems and in mineral industry revenues. A general discussion of the purposes and principles of taxation, the unique nature of a mining enterprise, the various types of taxes imposed on mineral production, and the character and rationale of the severance tax and its impacts on mining firms sets the severance tax in perspective. A bibliography of materials on the severance tax is included.

El presente texto señala la topografía, geología regional, estratigrafía, fisiografía, caracteres morfológicos, mineralógicos y genéticos, y la clasificación según su proceso de formación del yacimiento de la región Morococha. La topografía de esta región es variada y rica en cuanto formaciones geológicas se refiere, dado sus orígenes y edades respectivas. Su estratigrafía comprende una columna geológica, la cual está compuesta por rocas sedimentarias, y extrusivas que van desde el periodo Cuaternario hasta el Terciario. Las formaciones encontradas en la región son las filitas excelsior, volcánicas Catalina, formación Mitu, calizas Potosí, formación Santo Toribio-Buena Ventura, formación Machay, las capars rojas de Casapalca, la diorita de Anticona y monzonita cuarcífera de Morococha. Asimismo tiene dos sistemas de fallas: longitudinal y transversal. Las especies metalíferas de mayor abundancia son: la pirita, tenantita, tetrahedrita, chalcopirita, enargíta, blenda, magnetíta y galena. Mientras que las de menor abundancia son: estefanita, especularita, phrotita, marcasita y muy raramente: aíkenita; burnonita, cubanita, jamesonita, luzonita y molibdenita. Finalmente, entre las características estructurales de depósito tenemos: las vetas y los mantos, considerando entre los mantos algunos subtipos o variedades estructurales. También existe una tercera clase de estructura de depósitos minerales, que son lo que están constítuídos por varios depósitos agrupados en forma localizada y se conocen como el "0re -Clusters" o "Archipiélago".

Mining has always been, and still is, an activity which is vital for the development of mankind. This is because a predominant proportion of industrial products and energy is produced from raw materials that are excavated using mining methods. The need for environmental protection and the close proximity of urban settlements and mines in Slovenia have necessitated ever stricter requirements for the excavation of raw materials and the introduction of more environmentally-friendly mining methods. This is achieved by implementing a closed eco-technological cycle of raw material excavation within the scope of mining methods. In surface mines, this means prompt reclamation of the degraded surfaces, and in underground mines the use of methods with minimized impact on the surface and on underground water. In underground mines, mining methods with backfilling installed according to the multi-barrier disposal system are the only ones that allow the possibility of implementing a closed eco-techno-logical cycle of excavating raw materials. Various industrial waste materials are also included in the backfilling material in order to improve its strength properties. Backfilling consisting of several different waste materials is produced in the form of a composite. Before backfilling consisting of waste material composites can even begin to be used in mines, an environmental impact assessment of its suitability for mines needs to be made. In order to make such an assessment, a pressure leaching cell and an open diffusion cell were made, i.e. a pressure leachate test and a sorption test were developed. The two cells and the developed tests will enable the study of the influence of backfilling on the environment if installed in an underground mine. The pressure leachate test performed with the use of the pressure leaching cell simulates leaching from a consolidated backfill during the seeping of underground water into the backfilling material under pressure. The sorption test performed in an open diffusion cell simulates the flow of eluate leached from the backfilling material through the rock/geotechnical barrier. The two tests were developed in such a manner that they are performed either in succession immediately after one another, but they can also be performed separately at a certain time interval. The paper presents an assessment of the suitability of backfilling made of different waste material composites. "The Canadian mining industry faces the prospects of a severe shortage of graduate mining engineers over the next decade. This arises from three factors: first, a growth in industrial activity; second, the average age of company engineering and management staff; and third, the reduced number of students in engineering faculties around the world. This paper aims to identify the critical factors underlying the trend of inadequate recruitment into higher education for mining and to examine means of alleviating the problem.This paper is based upon surveys of potential and current students and graduate mining engineers from four mining schools. MINING geology does not lend itself - very readily to a review embracing "improvements in methods," as perhaps do shop practices or laboratory procedures. The "methods" used in mining geology are simply the application of geology to mining; winning the ore, the handling of material, mechanical appliances, all belong strictly to mining proper, and have no place in a review of geology as applied to mining. A comprehensive review would necessarily cover a .very broad field, which could be subdivided into many -parts. Review of equipment, performance, and shaft design plans including head-frames for sinking and forms for lining are given. Also included are comparative data for shafts of 11 x20 ft and 193/4 x 30 ft with 756 and 666-ft depths, respectively. Advantage from curtain wall installation with "slip forms" which warrant consideration for normal lining are outlined. A preliminary review is also made of "chemical grouting" to stop water inflow leakage with Halliburton equipment and service. Two coal mine shafts recently completed in Franklin County, Ill., afford experience and accomplishment to warrant review. These shafts provide access to a tract with a potential recovery of one hundred million tons. This work provided the initial sinking by other than a contractor's organization since 1918. Four additional shafts required during the interim were sunk under contract arrangement with others. Supervisory contact and inspection afforded experience to govern planning and conduct of the recent work. TEST DRILLING Core test holes were drilled within each of the two shaft locations. Four additional cable tool holes were drilled on a radius of 700 ft from the shaft bottom to determine the coal seam elevations and govern the underground layout plans for each shaft. A graphic log of the hoist shaft test drillhole is shown by Fig. 1. A very soft sandstone was found at a depth of 16 ft. Cored recovery of the sandstone proved much weaker than the overlying compacted sand secured with coring facilities for soil recovery. Gradation from the very soft sandstone to fairly hard material occurred with the next 14 ft, extending to a depth of 30 ft. The weak character within the upper portion entailed need of adequate protection when sinking as described later. A part of the sandstone provided sufficient porosity and permeability to warrant further investigation. Adjacent cable tool drilling for temporary water supply disclosed inflow was limited to 2 gpm with a depth of 40 ft. It was increased to 12 gpm during the next 50 ft of drilling and occasioned subsequent precaution when sinking. General arrangement of facilities for sinking the hoist shaft is shown by Fig. 2. An available steel frame building was used to accommodate the hoist, compressor, shop, and shower or change room. The stiff leg derrick with 90-ft length of boom permitted removal of forms from the wood shop to the storage area or delivery within the shaft. Reinforcing steel and other needs were similarly handled, in addition to headframe erection. The headframe was placed over one end of the shaft to enable passage of forms for lining through the adjacent half next to the stiff leg derrick.
