Following a successful investigation on the Central Zone sample, a cyanidation study was conducted on an ore sample from the AD-MW Zone of Clarence Stream Property, owned by Freewest Resources Canada, to develop a leaching strategy to extract gold. At a grade of 6.48 g/t, gold is present in the forms of aurostibite, free gold and electrum. The ore contains 4.3% berthierite/gudmundite, 1.3% pyrrhotite, 0.7% pyrite, 0.07% stibnite and 0.9% arsenopyrite. Similar to the Central Zone, the extraction of gold from the AD-MW Zone can be performed at atmospheric pressure, pH 10.5 and with a low concentration of cyanide. The grind size had no effect on gold extraction between a P80 of 28 to 71 µm. The oxygen and cyanide requirement significantly increased with a ?ner grind. Consequently, a very close control of cyanide addition is required to minimize passivation of gold. Lead nitrate, added in the pretreatment, increased the extraction of gold by 2.3%. Leaching at pH < 10 improved gold extraction but increased the cyanide consumption by 5%. Passivation of gold occurred when the pretreatment was longer than 2 hours. A longer pretreatment reduced the cyanide consumption by 5%. Mineralogical characterization of the leach residue with no gravity pretreatment prior to leaching indicated the presence of unleached gold grains and passivated gold grains. Removal of coarse gold by gravity increased the extraction by 2.8% (leach residue at 0.74 g/t Au). Increasing the DO to 16 ppm or the lead nitrate from 500 to 1,000 g/t increased the overall gold extraction to 90.4% (leach residue at 0.62 g/t), which is the maximum gold extraction obtained. The leaching parameters were 800 ppm NaCN, DO 16 ppm and pH 10.5 for a duration of 120 hours. The associated cyanide consumption was 4.0 kg/t. Gold leaching was not sensitive to cyanide concentration. Reducing the cyanide concentration to 250 ppm resulted in a gold extraction of 89.5% with a cyanide consumption of 2.6 kg/t.

Neste trabalho, pela primeira vez, o sistema cerâmico Al2O3-Nb2O5-LiF teve suas propriedades mecânicas investigadas. Foram investigadas diferentes composições, em peso, para o composto (Al2O3–4%Nb2O5)–nLiF, com n variando entre 0 e 1,50%, a três temperaturas de sinterização diferentes (1300, 1350 e 1400 ºC). Como caracterização mecânica, avaliou-se a microdureza Vickers para todas as composições. A adição de LiF que apresentou os maiores valores de densificação teve seus módulos de Young e de cisalhamento, e as velocidades de ondas elásticas determinadas. Os resultados mostraram que todas as adições de LiF elevaram a microdureza do composto Al2O3–4%Nb2O5. Este fato pode estar relacionado com a densificação e fases obtidas após a sinterização. A adição de 0,5% de LiF ao composto cerâmico Al2O3-4% Nb2O5, promovendo maior densificação, quando sinterizado a 1300 ºC obteve valores de propriedades elásticas comparáveis aos obtidos por Al2O3–4%Nb2O5 sem LiF, sinterizado a 1400 ºC. Os resultados relevaram ainda uma coerente correlação entre dureza, módulo de elasticidade e densificação. Dessa forma, a adição de fluoreto de lítio ao sistema cerâmico alumina-nióbia possibilitou a redução em pelo menos 100 ºC na temperatura de sinterização, com propriedades mecânicas comparáveis.

Since the publications of Gy’s initial work, many authors have discussed the approaches to estimate the variance of the fundamental sampling error (FSE). Experimental tests suggested by Pitard and François-Bongarçon determine the sampling parameters K and a to calibrate Gy’s formula. The heterogeneity test and the sample tree method are well known and broadly used for many commodities. However, prior to the analysis, the collection of a representative sample is an intriguingly difficult task. The composite for the heterogeneity tests often consists of run-?of-?mine material or processed ore on a conveyor belt. In most cases the final sample does not have enough mass, mixes different geological units, represents a rare blend and does not characterise the deposit. In order to obtain a reliable composite for trace elements and low-grade ores, sampling practitioners suggest at least half a ton of material.To prevent the common representative pitfalls in the FSE, this case study focuses on a single gold-?bearing geological unit collected in situ. With this unit being structured by the mine geologists, but with the interaction between engineers and chemists, it was possible to validate the reconciliation suggested by Pitard (2015). The heterogeneity test and the sample tree method were performed using 500 kg of a smoky quartz from a single geological domain and the results were compared to Gy’s formula. The logging practice by the geologists was modified, emphasising the definition of the size of the gold nugget or its cluster, number of grains and association. Finally, a mineralogical study was conducted on the geological unit to define the liberation factor. A combination of the needs of business, employee desires and safety and health considerations is stimulating increasing attention to the time spent by people at work and the timing of that work. Particularly we are seeing: - innovative work schedules for 24-hour mining businesses; and - response from industry to accommodate the needs, even the desires, of employees in return for systems which are more productive and more capital efficient. There appears to be an evolutionary trend for business management to become more sophisticated and responsive to the need for achieving close to best cost work schedules to sustain continuous improvement. The underlying motivating forces driving this trend for improved techniques in organising attendance at, and time spent at work, is the seemingly inseparable combination of technological advance and ever-increasing accumulation of capital. The mining industry has not remained untouched by this thrust for ever-increasing need for best use of labour, to adopt advances in technology and to provide attractive opportunities for putting accumulated capital to work. An essential component of this on-going thrust is a substantial effort by the mining industry to improve the performance of labour by providing most-productive work schedules.

During 1996 and 1997, Oregon experienced flooding on a scale not seen in many years. Some gravel pits located near rivers experienced erosion and, in several cases, breaches between the gravel pit and the river. Initial evaluation of several sites that experienced breaches indicates that impacts to the river system are complex and vary significantly from site to site. The impacts to the adjacent river system may be viewed as both positive and negative. Several floodplain-mining sites in Oregon located in areas of historic river flow have reverted to active riverbed. In many cases, state and federal fisheries biologists and university researchers see the resulting increase in channel complexity and habitat as favorable. The Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries – Mined Land Reclamation Program (DOGAMI-MLR) is performing additional studies of the impacts to the off-channel areas that resulted from the 1996 floods. More data is needed to make sound floodplain decisions regarding mining.

A composite iron ore-reductant pellet is a mixture of fine iron ore and fines of coal/char/coke, bonded at essentially room temperature with sufficient green strength for subsequent handling. In ironmaking, these pellets offer the advantage of fast reduction, utilisation of fines, non-coking coal and coke breeze. The composite pellet-based alternative ironmaking processes constitute a promising route for ironmaking in future. The present paper is a brief review of kinetics and mechanism of reduction of iron oxides into iron and other associated reactions, when these pellets are heated to high temperature. It would draw significantly from investigations conducted by the author and his co-workers.

Ceveland-Cliffs uses a specialized software package in mine planning at the Empire Mine, an iron ore mine it manages on Michigan’s Marquette Iron Range. The application puts together years of mining experience that began in the early 1960s on the eastern end of the Marquette Range. The Empire Mine is in its 38th year of production. It uses the software to model a complex and highly variable low-grade magnetite ore body, capturing the economics of mining and processing to the final product. With special attention given to geostatistical methods, the software is used for all geologic modeling, ore reserve estimation, ore control, pit design and short- and long-range planning.

Real output expanded at a 3.0% rate worldwide in 1987, a slightly lower pace than the 3.2% rate in 1986. The decline was accounted for largely by slower growth in the U.S.S.R. and the East European countries, as well as in the developing countries (table 1). According to the International Monetary Fund, output of industrial countries output grew 3.1% and rose most strongly in Japan, the United Kingdom, and Canada (table 2). U.S. economic growth remained at 2.9%, the same as in 1986. Consumer and government spending declined in industrial countries, while gross fixed investment: rent increased. This increase in fixed investment expenditures could be attributed partly to lagged results of some 1986 developments: the fall in oil prices, declining interest rates, and exchange rate changes. The U.S. budget deficit, as well as the large external deficits and surpluses among major industrial countries, hindered further growth .2 A report from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) indicates that the impact of the October stock market crash was short-lived because it hit economies that were growing strongly, anyway.3 The growth of output in the developing countries slowed in 1987; however, output declined in the fuel-exporting developing countries. These countries have been adversely affected by weakness in oil prices and the depreciation of the U.S. dollar. The weighted average of inflation rates in industrial countries--as measured by the [ ] GNP deflator, was 2.9% in 1987, down from 3.4% in 1986. Prices rose 3.0% in the United States, up from 2.6% the previous year. Inflation for 1988 is expected to remain slightly higher in the United States than in Japan and the Federal Republic of Germany because of recent exchange rates changes and the elimination of slack productive capacity and labor in the U.S. economy. The metal zinc has been around since only about 1400 AD. This may sound like a long time, but when compared to fellow base metals copper and lead, which were discovered in 5000 and 4000 BC respectively, it is evident that zinc is a fairly new kid on the block. This may also be the reason why many new facts and benefits of zinc are still being discovered. For instance, it has been discovered only in the last few decades that virtually no life on earth is possible without zinc. In this address it will be shown that zinc is not only very useful to mankind, but is in fact vitally important for all forms of life. It will be shown that zinc is natural, zinc is essential for life, zinc protects, zinc contributes to the well-being of society and that zinc is fully recyclable. It is therefore hoped, that by the end of this address, zinc will no longer be viewed only as the metal that is responsible for the nice colour of roofing sheets and steel buckets, but may indeed be man?s best friend.

Horizontal rotating mills are being used all over the world associated with different mineral and power generation industries. David Brown South Africa, with over 140 years of experience in gear manufacture and design, has been supplying these industries with innovative designs at exceptional quality. The gearing systems associated with these industries are challenged daily with operating conditions with are not always fully understood. Failures are therefore experienced, over time in the industry, which can therefore not always be fully explained. David Brown South Africa has developed a gear monitoring system, the Intelligent Gearing System, in association with Transmission Dynamics (UK), in order to monitor and analyze these operating conditions in real time. The system has been designed on the principles of Six Sigma, incorporating Design for Six Sigma. The purpose with this system design is to monitor the operating conditions on the pinion, record the information and analyze the data in relation to the rate of fatigue damage to the girth gear and pinion. This is done in real time and unattended. The output from the Intelligent Gearing System can be fed back into the operating system of the mill user, in order to display an alarm for operating conditions exceeding the design criteria as well as information on the rate of fatigue damage due to these operating conditions. When the mill operating conditions are better understood, and the effect on the fatigue life of the mill gearing components, mill users can forecast critical spare holding levels with an increased accuracy. The Intelligent Gearing System also allows early actions to remove reasons for system overloads.

New sedimentological and biostratigraphic data indicate that the Leron Formation in the Markham Suture Zone, Papua New Guinea (PNG) represented Pleist- ocene alluvial fan-delta deposition in shallow marine to lacustrine environments. The distribution of sedimentary regimes in the Leron Formation indicates that during collision zone evolution, various tectono-sedimentary regimes do not always track the movement of the triple-junction systematically as idealized by Crook&apos;s (1989a) model. The migration of various tectono-sedimentary regimes are also controlled and influenced by the effects of second-order geometric features of the convergent margins. Leron Formation in the Markham Valley represents late to post-collisional marine to fluvial molasse. Foraminifera indicate that the collision and concomitant suturing of the Markham valley occurred after 1.32Ma.

En ese sentido, el objetivo del texto es señalar la viabilidad del "método Cornish"como método alternativo, económico, de rendimiento óptimo y que no presenta riesgos para el personal o la labor realizada. Este método es aplicable en aquellas vetas uniformes no falladas, que tengan desde una potencia pequeña hasta aquella que sea posible apuntalar, así como en aquellas que requieran sostenimiento del techo en la veta mima o donde se realizen Shrinkages. El proceso del método se basa en la preparación de los tajeos, luego en la explotación(perforación y disparos), enmaderado, relleno del tajeo, recuperación de madera, las variantes en la preparación del tajeo y la recuperación del mineral. La única desventaja que ofrece este método es su peligrosidad, dado que si se aplica en zonas inadecuadas o sin la supervisión que garantice el cumplimiento de las normas preventivas, es preferible el uso de los "Square Sets". Sin embargo, la aplicación del método resulta mucho más productiva en rendimiento teórico puesto que alcanza de 7 a 10 toneladas por tarea de 8 horas y responde satisfactoriamente siempre y cuando las condiciones de las vetas lo permita.

Proximity detection systems (PDSs) for mobile machines have the potential to decrease injuries and fatalities. Early adopters of the technology have identified some challenges, which present an opportunity to explore and improve the integration of mobile PDSs in underground coal mines. The current research study applied the task-technology fit framework to investigate the fit between mobile PDS technology and mining relative to health and safety, from the perspective of leaders at two coal mines. Quantitative results from the study show that mine leaders evaluated mobile PDS favorably for training and ease of use, system feedback, user authorization and experience, and less favorably for safety, compatibility, task completion, and reliability. Qualitative results reveal specific task, mine, and system characteristics that may have influenced leaders’ evaluations. Os m&eacute;todos de pr&eacute;-concentra&ccedil;&atilde;o, dentre os quais podemos destacar o gravim&eacute;trico, magn&eacute;tico, peneiramento e ore sorting, eliminam grande parte da massa a ser alimentada na usina, o que consequentemente impacta nas caracter&iacute;sticas do material que ir&aacute; alimentar a moagem. Assim, este trabalho busca fazer uma compara&ccedil;&atilde;o no desgaste de circuitos de moagem com e sem a pr&eacute;-concentra&ccedil;&atilde;o em min&eacute;rios de baixo teor. Atrav&eacute;s de ensaios laboratoriais de AI de Bond, foi obtido o valor da abrasividade e com isso &eacute; poss&iacute;vel estimar o consumo de material de desgaste e revestimento dos circuitos. O estudo indica que o resultado &eacute; ben&eacute;fico pois, eliminando-se mais da metade da massa, o desgaste dos equipamentos decai de forma proporcional, com um ganho maior no caso do ensaio em que a abrasividade do material pr&eacute;-concentrado &eacute; menor. Portanto, do ponto de vista econ&ocirc;mico, al&eacute;m da pr&eacute;-concentra&ccedil;&atilde;o ter baixo custo operacional, a redu&ccedil;&atilde;o nos gastos com revestimento e bolas na moagem diminui de forma muito significativa.

El presente trabajo es un estudio realizado donde se determina la pérdida de ingresos de una empresa minera, producto de la detención de camiones y cargadores frontales en una faena minera a cielo abierto. El cálculo de esta pérdida de ingresos se realiza a través de un modelo que estima el volumen del movimiento de roca de la mina y los ingresos que este genera en función de la disponibilidad y rendimiento de los camiones y cargadores, y su interacción conjunta.

Over the last three decades, the mining industry has been moving towards underground mechanized mining methods and the number of load haul dump (LHD) vehicles utilized has increased. The growth of mechanization and automation has benefited both workers and mining companies. However, due to the design constraints with LHD vehicles and the limitations of the operating environment, restrictions to operator visibility has contributed to a number of accidents, including fatal injuries. Past researchers have used the light filament technique to collect obscuration zones around mobile equipment and have produced 2D visibility charts (shadow diagrams) of this information. The light filament method involves manually collecting visibility data, which results in errors and is time consuming, requiring around three hours to complete. This research utilizes a MENSI GS100 laser scanner along with 3D modelling software (3Dipsos) to collect and process operator visibility profiles for underground mobile equipment. Results from this test work indicate that a laser scanner can be successfully used to rapidly collect this data and utilize this information for improved mobile equipment design from a visibility perspective.
