Despite technological improvements and better understanding of the hazards, coal dust explosions stilI occur. Experimental explosions in galleries in various countries extend knowledge with the constant aim of providing safer working conditions. The inadvertent ignition of an accumulation of methane is the traditional initiator of the coal dust explosion.There are specific parameters of coal dust explosibility and explosion propagation, including the important volatile matter in the coal, fineness and dispersibility of the dust and its concentration. Accepting that initiation cannot be absolutely prevented, it is necessary to consider explosion suppression. While both limestone dust and water are the chosen explosion suppressants, in practice water has more limitations to its efficacy when related to the degree of explosion violence. These data give rise to the criteria for explosion suppression, differences in favoured mining geometries, and using the same principles, to differences in suppression treatments.

"The Crandall Canyon Mine (CCM) is located in the Wasatch coal field in central Utah. Extensive longwall mining at CCM preceded a decision to recover coal left in barrier pillars on each side of a set of main entries extending far into the mine. During mining in March 2007, a major bump occurred that led to cessation of mining in the barrier pillar on the north side of the mains and to the start of mining in the south barrier pillar. Subsequent loss of ground control in August 2007, through coal pillar bursts had tragic consequences with loss of six miners and shortly afterward three rescue team members. A U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA)report describes the events in detail (MSHA, 2008).An important lesson to be learned from CCM is the need to select a computer program suitable for pillar design. Computer programs are engineering tools and selecting the right tool for the job is essential. In this regard, minimum program requirements include capability for computing stress distribution within a pillar and adjacent roof and floor strata. The reason is simple: strength of rock is stress dependent; both vary from point to point in pillars and adjacent strata. Preferably, one should follow the evolution of stress as the mining plan is executed from start to finish to assure safety or to warn of a potentially hazardous situation developing as mining progresses.The approach to the problem posed by barrier pillar mining at CCM is conventional in the sense of applying well known finite element modeling techniques to analysis of a proposed mining plan. The engineering purpose is to evaluate the mining plan with respect to ground control questions including roof, floor and pillar safety. Results of previous two-dimensional finite element analysis indicated pillar safety was by no means assured (MSHA, 2008; Pariseau, 2008; Pariseau, 2011). Geometry of barrier pillar mining is limited in two dimensions for example, crosscuts are not seen in vertical cross sections. While three-dimensional analyses are preferred, even moderately sized regions often lead to very large problem sizes that exceed computer capabilities. However, a recent development in finite element modeling of tabular deposits allows for whole mine analysis in three dimensions. This technique involves a dual node - dual mesh concept. Both have been used separately in much earlier work, but are only now used in combination. It is possible to have an estimation of subsidence at a kilometer scale and details of stress, strain and displacement about barrier pillars, main entries and pillars, and so on at a meter scale (Pariseau, 2014). No compromise involving empirical formulas or similar guess work is required. Indeed, all calculations are based on first principles: physical laws, kinematics, and material laws. Effects of joints and in situ variability or uncertainty in strata properties, elastic moduli and strengths, may be included for greater realism. An important objective of the present study is to assess the role of three-dimensional pillar geometry in arriving at conclusions regarding barrier pillar mining versus two-dimensional results."

The expansion of the West Point wastewater treatment plant located in Seattle, Washington, will require a permanent tieback retaining wall to enlarge the plant site for the new treatment plant facili­ties. The retaining wall will extend approximately 3,000 feet along the property boundary between the treatment plant and the neighboring Discovery Park. Wall heights will range from 35 to as high as 65 feet. The purpose of the retaining wall is to provide a more uniform grade on the plant site and to resist lateral pressures exerted by the upslope, unstable hillside. During preliminary design of the retaining wall, various wall systems were evaluated based on assumed subsurface soil conditions. Results of preliminary studies indicated that expected subsurface conditions and wall heights made a permanent tieback retaining wall feasible. However, uncertain loads on the wall and the capacity of anchors in the native soils were significant. As a result, a detailed geotechnical program was conducted. The scope of the program included conventional drilling, sampling, analyses, and a field test program to determine site-specific anchor capacities. This paper describes the anchor test program and results.

This paper describes the new legislative regime that will apply to the regulation of the minerals industry in New Zealand. The reform of New ZealandÆs minerals legislation was initiated in January 1988 when the Minister for the Environment, Rt Hon Geoffrey Palmer, announced the Governments intention to review all the major laws governing New ZealandÆs resources. The Resource Management Bill is scheduled for introduction to the House in December 1989 and its date of enactment is scheduled for June 1990. With some matters still to be determined (at the time of writing), this paper cannot be a definitive review and description of the new legislation, it is instead an attempt to outline the major features of the Bill, to date, that are seen as important to the mining industry.

Please allow me the temerity to reply to your reply to my contribution as follows: A fracture is brittle if plastic deformation is absent or, conversely a fracture is ductile if plastic deformation is present. Consequently, brittleness is specified by the degree of plastic deformation at fracture. This is the generally accepted definition. If other material properties (e.g. the quorient or the product of the uniaxial compressive and tensile strengths) under certain conditions are influenced by brittleness, or brittleness by them, these should not be called brittleness. If the one or the other author does that, he simply uses imprecise language. Even your remark, that ?Inyang and Pitt (1990) stated that the ratio of the compressive strength (sc/st) is directly proportional to brittleness?, confirms that the two quantities are not considered the same. For example:? The well known definition that a material is linear?elastic if the strain is directly proportional to the stress?does not mean that stress (measured in MPa) and strain (measured in %) are the same thing.

The rapid increase in the mmber of automobiles during the last 25 years has resulted in the insistent and growing demand for better roads of more permanent construction. Some form of State license for the operation of automobiles has been in effect almost from the time of the first "self-propelled" vehicle, and some part of the revenue derived from the sale of these licenses has been applied to the maintenance and construction of roads. However, to obtain funds with which to build their present highway systems, the individual States have resorted to the taxation of gasoline. The first State to adopt a gasoline tax was Oregon, the law becoming effective February 25, 1919. By 1928, all of the States except two had levied taxes on gasoline at rates varying from 2 to 5 cents per gallon. New York and Massachusetts passed gasoline tax laws which became effective in 1929. Regulations governing the quality and the methods of handling gasoline and other petroleum products sold in the States have also been adopted by 29 States; many of these laws antedate the adoption of a gasoline tax. The variations in motor fuel speci- fications and methods of test have been pronounced in the several States. The Bureau of Mines, in making certain technical studies of the rasolines marketed throughout the United States, the results of which are reported in its semiannual motor gasoline surveys and other reports, has had occasion to obtain and compile all of the present (April 1, 1931) tax and pection laws of the several States which relate to motor fuel and other petroleum products. To facilitate the use of this material and to obviate the need in most cases of reading the complete text of the laws as published by the States, the pertinent information was arranged in tabular form for cly reference. 3 Although digests of States gasoline tax laws' are available and copies of the complete laws can be obtained from the State agancies in charge of the enforcement of gasoline tax and inspection laws, it is believed that

No iron ore deposits were reported before 1961 from the Hamersley Ranges, Western Australia, although low-grade bedded iron formations, associated with ferruginous jaspers and cherts, were known to occur in the local Nullagine Series of Precambrian age.In January-March 1961 preliminary investigations in the area drained by the Turner River, Duck Creek and Serpentine Creek revealed the presence of over 1000 million tons of dense botryoidal or pisolitic limonite, forming flat-lying orebodies with 50-57 per cent iron.Large bedded hematitic orebodies were also discovered in the same area in August-October 1961. These have a porous, biscuity texture and an iron content of 60-61 per cent. They occur at a welldefined stratigraphic level (Brockman Iron Formation), normally in synclines where they have been upgraded by circulating meteoric waters during an old cycle erosion.In 1962 systematic geological studies and mapping, together with sampling and scout drilling, indicated larger reserves of biscuity hematitic ore and led to the discovery of massive hematite deposits at Mt. Tom Price. These were extensively drilled in 1963, proving the persistence of' high-grade mineralisation to a depth of 200 ft and over.To date the total indicated reserves of the Hamersley deposits, within the area held by Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited, are of the order of 4960 million tons and thus rank among the more important of the world. The reserves are composed of 600 million tons of bedded dense hematite ore with 64-66 per cent iron, 2900 million tons of bedded biscuity hematite-limonite with 60-61 per cent iron, 1360 million tons of limonite (goethite) ranging in grade from 50 to 57 per cent, and 100 million tons of canga (conglomerate) iron ore containing 53-63 per cent iron. In all cases harmful impurities are comparatively low.

A new hydrogen production process, named the HyPr-RING, has been proposed. Fundamental concept of the HyPr-RING is integration of water carbon reaction, water-gas shift reaction and CO2 absorbing reaction in a single reactor. Firstly, thermodynamic analysis was done to judge the possibility to realize the process. It was found that high pressure and temperature condition, such as 20 MPa and 1000 K, is required to promote this integrated reaction. Next, experimental verification of the new process was done under the high pressure and temperature reaction conditions. As the results, integration of above three reactions in a single reactor can be done successfully and produced a large amount of hydrogen as estimated by thermodynamic analysis. Experiments showed that organic materials including coal, heavy oil, biomass, plastics can be used in this process. In the gaseous phase, no pollutants such asH2S, SO2, COS are detected so that gas cleanup system is not required for power generation when this process is used. Finally, a process design was made to estimate process efficiency. Theoretically, 1 mole of carbon can generate 2 moles of hydrogen and cold gas efficiency of this process estimated as more than 80 per cent. T HESE remarks on the occurrence of strata-bound massive sulphide deposits are submitted be-cause the writer recently visited the principal Cyprus deposits (in January, 1965) and has also a back-ground of many years spent largely in detailed observation and map-ping of the Horne and Amulet ore-bodies, now largely inaccessible. They are particularly related to the Symposium papers (September Bulletin) by Hutchinson and by Roscoe. Some comments are offered on the cupriferous pyrite deposits of Cyprus. As the writer is currently reviewing the published literature on the related deposits in Turkey, a brief account of some characteristic Anatolian sulphide occurrences is given. The discussion is closed with some thoughts on the relationship between these Mediterranean sulphide deposits and those of northwestern Quebec and the Superior province in general. The geology of Cyprus, as it relates to the sulphide deposits, is well summarized by Hutchinson (1965). After visiting Mavrovouni, Skouriotissa and Limni and after much thought on the possible ge-nesis of these ores, it seems quite logical to me that he is right. They are indeed closely related to late-stage submarine volcanism.

Titanium and zirconium heavy minerals occur in the tailings streams from processing plants which use the hot-water extraction process for recovery of bitumen from tar sand. In a research program conducted by Syncrude Canada Limited, the crude tailings stream was upgraded to produce quality zircon and titanium mineral products. To process the tailings through conventional upgrading equipment, bitumen residues must first be removed from the mineral grains. Then, by gravity separation, fines and coarse sand grains were removed and a 71% heavy minerals concentrate was prepared which was further separated by high-tension equipment into zircon and titanium minerals concentrates. The zircon concentrate was upgraded by gravity, magnetic and high-tension cleaning to produce a high-quality 98% zircon product. The titanium minerals concentrate was separated into rutile, leucoxene and ilmenite fractions. Heavy minerals distribution in tar sand drilling core samples has been evaluated for various locations on Syncrude Lease 17, and expected annual production levels of heavy minerals have been estimated. A preliminary evaluation has been made of the potential for zircon, leucoxene and rutile production and for further upgrading of ilmenite and leucoxene to synthetic rutile for titanium dioxide pigment production.

In recent years, thermodynamic data have been used to a greater degree than ever by the chemical and metallurgical engineer as a means of predicting and controlling chemical reactions. To satisfy the spiraling demand for basic physical data needed for the calculations, the Bureau of Mines is studying the heat capacities of a variety of chemical compounds at high and low temperatures. This paper is one of a series presenting such data. The heat capacities of two alkaline earth compounds, strontium bromide and strontium nitrate, were measured in a temperature range of 60° to 300° K. in an adiabatic calorimeter and at temperatures of 300° to about 1,200° K. in a Bunsen ice calorimeter. The construction and operation of the calorimeters are discussed in other reports.3 4 The heat-capacity data presented in this report were extrapolated to 0° K., and smooth values of heat capacity, entropy, enthalpy function, and free-energy function were calculated and tabulated at even 10-degree intervals. The enthalpy data were fitted with algebraic equations by applying the method of least squares; calculations a£ heat-capacity values, entropy, enthalpy function, and free-energy function were made at even 50-degree intervals. The heat and entropy of fusion of strontium bromide were calculated from the enthalpy measurements.

O processo de fusão seletiva a laser (FSL) é comumente utilizado na manufatura aditiva de materiais metálicos, sendo este um processo rápido no qual as peças são formadas camada por camada. Neste processo uma fonte de laser varre o leito de pó e seleciona as regiões a serem fundidas, através da alta intensidade de potência aplicada, de acordo com o projeto digital proposto, para obter peças com boa densidade. Embora a FSL apresente diversas vantagens, em relação aos processos de fabricação convencionais, esta ainda é de alto custo para indústria. A otimização de parâmetros de processamento desta tecnologia para as ligas com memória de forma vem sendo explorada. As ligas NiTi com memória de forma se destacam por apresentarem o efeito memória de forma e a superelasticidade, o que lhe confere várias aplicações práticas. Otimizar, no processo da FSL para essas ligas, o parâmetro densidade de energia do laser, é fundamental para obter as peças com boas propriedades mecânicas e baixa porosidade. Com isso, este trabalho tem como objetivo observar e criticar a influência dos parâmetros de processamento na microestrutura e porosidade dos corpos de prova de ligas de NiTi manufaturados via FSL.

"AbstractThe Söderströmstunneln is part of the Citybanan project that is currently under construction in the centre of Stockholm. Main part of the lot Söderströmstunneln is a 300m long immersed tunnel connecting the inner-city islands Södermalm and Riddarholmen. It consists of three tunnel elements that have been immersed in summer 2013. Since the solid bedrock is descending in that area to more then 40m depth, the tunnel elements have been placed and are permanently supported on four pile groups that have been constructed in advance. The common Swedish system of steel core piles has been used to built the pile groups. Drilling and installation of the steel cores piles in free water depth of up to 20m had to be done from a pontoon. The steel core piles are connected with underwater concrete pile caps.IntroductionCitybanan is a new 6km long double track railway tunnel running beneath central Stockholm including two new underground stations Odenplan and Stockholm City. When completed in 2017 commuter trains will have their own tracks through Stockholm, whereas the remaining railway traffic will continue to use the exisiting two tracks (see Fig. 1). This will double the capacity of the railway traffic through Stockholm. The Swedish transport administration Trafikverket is the client for this project. The design and built contract is carried out by the German contractor Züblin Spezialtiefbau GmbH together with their Swedish subsidiary Züblin Scandinavia AS.As the new Citybanan tunnel is in large parts situated below the bedrock level, it can be executed as rocktunnel in the common drill and blast method. Between the two inner-city islands Södermalm and Riddarholmen the tunnel is crossing the Söderström, an arm of the lake Mälaren. Here the bedrock is descending to a deep valley with more then 40m depth. To connect the rock tunnels between these islands a 300m long immersed concrete tunnel supported on pile foundations is currently under construction."

THE object of this paper is to review certain features in connection with the mining of narrow lodes, say up to 20 ft. or so wide. The types of ore-body to which it is intended to refer are those which occur. chiefly as fissure or shear-Iodes-that is, those lodes which are to be found in belts of country which have been subjected to dynamic stresses, resulting in the formation of cracks and fissures, into some of which has been concentrated sufficient metal-bearing material to form ores. Very frequently one of the walls of such a lode is found to be a fault, or plane of differential movement.The first point which comes up for consideration is the shaft and its position. From the information afforded by the prospecting which has been done on a lode relative to the dip, nature of country, &c., the position of the main hauling shaft can be determined. For purposes of general utility the hangingwall is generally chosen, if a vertical shaft, though, on account of freedom from creeps, the foot-wall would be safer. Vertical shafts are preferable to underlie shafts in many ways; but wherethe lode maintains a flat dip the cost of cross-cutting at the various levels becomes very heavy'. The first Report of Investigations of the present series (No. 4562) was on the fundamental properties of lead compounds, and the manner in which they set limits to the richness of lead products treated in the usual sintering-blast furnace units. These properties of the compounds were emphasized, as' it was desired, also, to learn the limitations of smelting the same compounds in present ore hearth practice; the hearth has a competitor in these "usual" units, even with the rich lead feeds best adapted for the hearths. Operating conditions that were followed in older metallurgical processes, when rich products, were treated, were outlined. The second report of the series (R. I. 4563) was on the development of the ore hearths of the types now used in the Tri-State from the viewpoint of the features, functions, and dimensions of the earlier hearths that had been most changed. Experimental data, for both well and poorly desulfurized charges being considered, were given to show the relative changes in the sizes and compositions of the charges after they were added to the ore (Scotch) hearths. A general picture was given of the charge column and of the conditions prevailing there when the operation was satisfactory. In this third paper, the composition of the gases prevailing in the charge column at various elevations will be correlated with what has been learned of the nature of the charge column in order to trace the steps of operation by which lead sulfide is converted into metallic lead. The metallurgical factors that govern operation and the lines along which improvements may be made will be noted.

Each exchange has specific rules and requirements for technical documentation to support the listing process. Once listed, each exchange also has specific rules for technical information to meet ongoing compliance requirements. Wet mining of auriferous gravels at L & MÆs Waikaka operation in Southland creates spoil dumps derived from stripping of a clay rich overburden, tailings from past dredging and the processing of auriferous sands and gravels. Over recent times, spoil dumps have slumped on six occasions, threatening the viability of the wet mining operation. Close examination of slump morphology, coupled with the sequence of material placement and rate of dumping suggested a mechanism associated with undrained failure of a 2 m layer of silt and sand tails forming the base of dumps.Commencing with some information on the geotechnical properties of source overburden, back analysis of failure morphology and sequence and development of undrained loading conditions from first principals, the most likely failure mechanism and factors controlling failure were defined. Based on analysis results, a scheme to stabilise the lowwall dumps was developed and implemented, augmented by continuous monitoring of pore pressures in the basal wet tails, and laboratory testing for confirmation of computed material properties.Lowwall spoil stability has improved since implementation involving changes to the method of spoil loading, and modification of wet tails composition to improve permeability and drainage of the basal wet tails under load. The method and approach to prediction and verification of failure mechanism provide a sound basis for continued mining of deeper auriferous gravels.

Rate minima are encountered in the reduction of magnetite with hydrogen. In a certain temperature zone, the reaction rate decreases with rise in temperature. This is inexplicable by classical kinetic theories; neither is a transition in reduction mechanism suitable for interpreting the observed behavior, This anomaly can be fully explained by hypothesizing two species of chemisorbed hydrogen with different adsorption coefficients and activation energies for adsorption. Competition between two energetic states of adsorption occurs with temperature rise, with the low energy state predominating below the anomalous temperature zone and the high energy state above it. The presence of two possible adsorption sites appears to be characteristic for oxidic adsorbents.

This Technical Note was presented as a poster at the Western Cape Mineral Processing Symposium held in August 2001 The cleaning of fine coal (-1000 µm) in today?s coal preparation plants is an economically important factor. Coals with high ash contents are, in general, commercially undesirable. Current well-known techniques for treating fine coal include froth flotation and spirals. The primary critical factor with regards to spirals is the efficiency of the process whereas that of flotation, is the cost of there agents used. Research into enhanced gravity separation techniques has resulted in several commercially available enhanced gravity separators. This project was based on a preliminary investigation into the feasibility of one such separator, to effectively treat fine (-500 µm) coal. Experimental variables included particle size and speed of rotation of the said instrument. The performance of the separator was compared to the results obtained from liquid density separations done for the two coal fractions evaluated. From the results obtained in this preliminary study it appears that the piece of equipment investigated does not measure up to expectations. Recommendations for further investigation include the evaluation of the instrument on other South African coals to obtain conclusive results.

A busca por metais para atender demandas crescentes vem em contracorrente à diminuição dos teores nas reservas. Desta forma, a busca por novas rotas de extração de metais aliada ao desenvolvimento sustentável se faz cada vez mais necessário. O presente trabalho teve por objetivo a recuperação de cobre do lixiviado proveniente de rejeito de níquel laterítico, que contém os seguintes metais: alumínio, cobalto, cromo, cobre, ferro, magnésio, manganês, níquel e zinco. Para isto, utilizou-se o processo de troca-iônica com a resina quelante Lewatit TP 207, uma resina catiônica com grupo funcional iminodiacetato. Estudou-se o tempo de reação e a influência de pH. O tempo de reação foi variado entre 0 e 24 horas e o pH de 0.5 a 2. Não foi estudado maiores valores de pH, pois haveria precipitação do ferro. A reação de adsorção pela resina entrou em equilíbrio em 180min. Em pH 2 teve maior recuperação de cobre, pois havia menor competição entre H+ e os cátions metálicos do licor, onde foi possível recuperar 50% do cobre. Os ensaios ocorreram em batelada com agitação de 200rpm, e as análises foram feitas usando a técnica de fluorescência de raios X por energia dispersiva (EDX).
