MANY of the gases and vapors used in anesthesia form explosive mixtures with oxygen or air. Sources of ignition for these mixtures always have existed in operating and anesthetizing areas. When ether was first introduced, candles,5 gaslights, and coal stoves caused fires and mild explosions of the vapor-air mixtures. Today the chief causes of ignition are electrical. Fires and explosions are still much too frequent; and, because many of the mixtures are rich in oxygen, the explosions sometimes are very violent. Obvious sources of ignition, such as electric-power sparks and arcs in open motors, switches, and receptacles, as well as exposed incandescent wires and hot plates, usually are recognized by hospital personnel and corrected. A source of ignition that is not so obvious to many is static electricity. Until quite recently the presence of this hazard in a large majority of anesthetizing areas was not even suspected. However, numerous explosions-many of them fatal to patients-have been attributed, with good reason, to sparks from static electricity.

In the operation of some flotation plants treating platinum ores it was found that there were imbalances between the inputs and outputs. The inputs and outputs were sampled as slurries and it was determined that the imbalances arose from biases in the sampling, despite the samplers having been designed according to well-established rules. The launders feeding the sample cutters, and the sample cutters themselves were redesigned using finite element analysis to model the flows. A new set of design rules were formulated. The application of a Components of Variance Analysis, to determine the variance of primary and secondary sampling and of analysis in the lab for a concentrate is presented to illustrate the need for frequent sampling of process streams.

Abstract The demand for pure zirconium and titanium metals in Germany increased considerably during the war. Pure zirconium was used in flash bulbs, in vacuum tubes, and in time fuses for bombs, where it has a decided advantage because it gives no gas in burning. Under the form of alloy, it was used with other rare elements for making substitutes for platinum; it was also used as a scavenging agent in high-grade steels. Metallic titanium was mainly used in connection with the manufacturing of special alloys. The authors were sent to Germany by the Department of Reconstruction and have investigated the German process developed for producing these rare metals. They describe the procedure and special equipment used for their commercial production in Germany during the war. General Metallic zirconium and titanium were .produced on a commercial scale in Germany by the thermal reduction, with metallic sodium, of potassium fluozirconate and titanium chloride, respectively, using a mixed potassium and sodium chloride flux. According to the information gathered, the sole German producer of these rare metals in pure form was the Deutsche Gold und Silber Scheideanstalt (commonly called Degussa), at their Werk II, 215 Gutleutstrasse, Frankfurt/Main, which was visited by the authors on September 18th, 1945. As far back as 1934, Degussa was carrying on active research on the manufacture of zirconium, and nearly one ton of the pure metal had been produced before September, 1939. Concurrently, a quite similar process was worked out for the recovery of titanium and it was in commercial operation in the year 1938, during which the production totalled about half a ton (metric). The demand, especially for pure zirconium, increased considerably during the war, attaining a total of about 48 tons during the period October, 1939, to the end of 1944, and reaching a peak of more than 15 tons in 1943. In 1944, the plant was slowed down due to the frequent and disastrous bombing by the Allies, especially in March and September.

This paper is the second and concluding report of the results of the twenty-fourth semiannual survey made by the Bureau of Mines of motor gasoline marketed in the United States. The first report7 on this 1931 survey gave the results of the examination of the gasoline samples in accordance with the new Federal specification for United States Government Motor Gasoline.8 The present paper reports results of the examination of the gasolines for color, doctor test, gravity, end point, per cent recovered, copper-dish gum, and steam-oven gum. The retail price and the tax at the time each sample was taken are also reported.

The plant and processing site at Porgera has been built on a levelled mudstone ridge about lkm E of the mine. Excavation of 7xl06m3 of soil and rock was necessary to achieve the required area. The exposed mudstone belongs to the Chico Formation and is weak, sheared and readily breaks down by slaking upon exposure. Tectonic uplift and subsequent erosion have produced the present landscape of narrow bedrock ridges, with deep colluvium in the incised valleys. The deep excavation to a maximum of 60m, has rapidly unloaded the mudstone, and subsequent stress relief has caused rebound and dilation of the material. The processes of pore pressure equilibration, softening, progressive failure and loosening, combine to deteriorate the newly exposed rock mass. Research on the solid-fuel reduction of Knob Lake iron or was conducted to upgrade lean and high-grade ores and recover metallized products suitable for ironmaking or steelmaking. The program included bench-scale tests plus a number of continuous campaigns in a 34-inch by 36-foot rotary kiln. In the laboratory, metallizations in excess of 90 percent were achieved by reduction of crushed ore with lignite at 950° C. Subsequent grinding (to minus 200 mesh) and wet magnetic separation yielded concentrates analyzing less than 3.0 percent SiO2 and more than 90 percent Fe. Virtually complete recovery of the iron occurred. During early continuous tests the crushed ore created a serious ringing in the kiln which was solved by balling the fines with bentonite. Unfortunately, at this temperature (950° C) the bentonite militates against the concentratability of the metallized product. For example, a run on direct-shipping ore produced concentrates of 89.5 percent Fe and 4.5 percent SiO2. At 500° C the adverse effect of bentonite disappeared and concentrates of 88.4 Fe and only 2.5 percent SiO2 resulted. However, with comparable feed r Los, the metallization dropped to 73 percent.

Over the last 10 years the diameter of unbraced, unlined and unanchored circular shafts has grown dramatically in many parts of the world. This progress has taken place through improvements in: construction methods; concrete rheology; and design capabilities. Excavation equipment has become more precise in terms of operator control and ability to correct alignment of digging elements leading to better alignment tolerances. Also contributing to the increases in shaft diameters is the evolution of design models. A better understanding of soil structure interaction is being incorporated into the analyses in terms of radial soil stresses and imposed loads on the shaft. This paper provides an overview of the recent progress made in circular shaft construction, the primary design considerations, and some innovative uses of efficient arc elements to develop unsupported structures of other shapes. In addition, a summary of recent circular shafts constructed worldwide is provided.

Because of the lack of a universally accepted definition or standard for RCA, we are left to our own conventions in the marketplace as to what is most ?effective? or a ?Best Practice? for our own facilities or organization. This lack of uniformity in the application of RCA produces an equal lack of uniformity in the measureable outcomes of RCA on the bottom-line from site to site and industry to industry. What is the definition of success for an RCA? Is it regulatory compliance? Is it some quantifiable measure of bottom-line performance? Is compliance and bottom-line performance the same thing? Can we measure the ROI we receive by doing compliant RCA? These questions must be adequately addressed if any definition of RCA is to be effective on the bottom-line. Like our various Corporate Vision and Mission Statements, what would be our Vision and Mission for RCA? When pondering the answer to this question, we should consider: ? What Key Performance Indicators will the Success of RCA be Linked to? This provides a direct correlation to the corporate dashboard and therefore garners support for the RCA effort when implemented at the sharp end. Not until we know what KPI?s will effectively measure our maintenance and reliability objectives can we begin to establish which opportunities will afford the greatest returns1. ? What Bottom-Line Metrics will be Tracked to Measure the Effectiveness of Our RCA Effort? Will it be increased production, profitability, regulatory compliance, etc.? Will it be decreased injuries/fatalities, claims, customer complaints, risks, etc.? We should be specific about these metrics and their correlation to the metrics on our corporate dashboard. ? What Will Trigger an RCA Investigation? Normally companies will establish quantifiable thresholds to be surpassed before an RCA will be conducted. Examples may be an OSHA recordable injury, a failure event in which production losses exceed $250,000, an equipment failure in excess of $50,000 or a regulatory violation. This is the norm. However, we should realize this is using our RCA skills totally on a reactive basis. High Reliability Organizations (HRO) strive for proaction and they also use RCA proactively. Why can?t we use RCA to analyze why unacceptable risks from an FMEA are so high? It is perfectly applicable yet rarely implemented in this fashion.

A argila é uma matéria prima com diversas finalidades na indústria. Entre as principais características desse material, destaca-se por ser terrosa, de granulometria fina, e suscetível à moldagem em função da consistência plástica que adquire em presença de certa quantidade de água. No caso do revestimento cerâmico, estes podem ser classificados de acordo com características do processo, propriedades tecnológicas e aplicações. A cor de queima do suporte é um fator de grande importância tecnológica e classifica os revestimentos em produtos de cor vermelha e produtos de cor branca. Contudo, este trabalho tem como objetivo o estudo das propriedades tecnológicas de uma argila de coloração branca, oriunda da cidade de Vera Cruz/RN que é localizada na microrregião do agreste potiguar, a fim de analisar suas propriedades tecnológicas e indicar sua viabilidade econômica. Para tanto, os corpos de prova foram confeccionados por pressão uniaxial, usando uma prensa hidráulica com uma pressão de 21 MPa. As amostras foram sinterizadas em um forno tipo mufla nas temperaturas de 900°C, 1000°C e 1100°C, com taxa de aquecimento de 10 °C/min e isoterma de 60 minutos. As propriedades tecnológicas das amostras foram analisas usando os ensaios de retração linear (RL%), massa específica aparente (MEA), absorção de água (AA%), perda ao fogo (PF%) e porosidade aparente (PA%). A composição química da argila foi analisada através da fluorescência de raios-X (FRX). Ao final do processo observou-se que a argila pode ser usada para compor massas cerâmicas, especialmente pela sua coloração clara, todavia os valores dos ensaios de AA% e PA% foram elevados o que demostra que o material necessita de outros componentes mineralógicos para ser usado industrial, especialmente na indústria de revestimentos.

Coal research and related activities in 1964 by the Bureau of Mines resulted in many advances in the production, preparation, and utilization of this valuable natural resource. Mining research during the year was marked by work on hydraulic mining, coalbed degasification, mine drainage control, mine sealing, strip-mine rehabilitation, and quenching of mine-refuse fires. Bureau research continued to produce information leading to increased safety in underground mining. Such research included roof and rib control via bolting and bonding, pressure monitoring of coal and mine rock during mining operations, and development of safety devices for detecting conditions leading to roof falls. Other safety work was continued on methane detectors, coal-dust suppression, and mine ventilation equipment and techniques. Mine explosion and explosives research, mine equipment and materials, safety rule modernization, and safety education and training of mine workmen were continued. Coal storage and preparation work in 1964 ranged from freezeproofing of lignite for rail shipment, through washability studies of coals and washing equipment, to research on new ways to remove ash and sulfur from coal. Electric power production, which accounts for a major portion of the market for coal, received further study. Unique power generation systems, including coal-burning gas turbine and megnetohydrodynamic generators, were intensively investigated. Conventional power systems were improved through continuation of work on furnace performance, powerplant stack gas purification, and engineering and boiler water service.

Flotation tests in a laboratory flotation cell at pH 8-8.5 and other sui}plementary tests were carried out on sphalerite-quartz and sphalerite-pyrite-'quartz mixtures. Depression of sphalerite resulted vvhen the addition of copper sulphate exceeded an optimum value. Evidence that this depression was due to collector deficiency because of reaction between copper sulphate and collector is presented. It was not found possible to devise a direct analytical method suitable for .plant control of reagent addition. A possible means of control using potassium cyanide and a higher pH is discussed.INTRODUCTIONAt the Rosebery mill of Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd., recovery 'of sphalerite in the zinc concentrate occasionally drops unexpectedly. Experiment in the mill and mill laboratory has suggested that one of the factors causing this may be the addition of more than an optimum amount of copper sulphate. On such occasions, an increase in the collector addition improves zinc recovery in the zinc concentrate, but only at the expense of sphalerite-pyrite selectivity.To examine the phenomenon more thoroughly, and if possible to find some means of determining the optimum addition of cepper sulphate and controlling the actual addition at this optimum, one of the authors (W. Eng.(Metallurgical Engineering) degree The interrelationship between mineral liberation and leaching behaviour of a gold ore is ill defined, mainly due to the complexity of both leaching and mineral liberation. This study presents a neural network approach to modelling the liberation of gold bearing ores. A complete mineralogical analysis of unmilled and milled ores, including gold deportment and gangue content are used as inputs to a self-organizing neural net, which generates order preserving topological maps. The arrangement and shapes of these clusters are coupled to unmilled free gold data to predict gold liberation in milled ores (absolute error: 8.1%). Moreover, the self-organizing maps were diagnostic of the quality of data used, indicating that the relationship between particle size and gangue material content requires further investigation.

This study forms a part of Bureau of Mines continuing research on thermal fragmentation of rocks. The potential of internal heating techniques for rock fragmentation is discussed. A concept of rock fragmentation with rapid inter¬nal heating of a localized inner volume of rock is advanced The energy required for rock fragmentation is made available by creating a required vol¬ume of localized heating. The fragmentation of rock using the proposed method is analyzed and qualitatively compared with the results of experiments with Charcoal granite, Dresser basalt, and Sioux Quartzite. High frequency dielec¬tric heating below 100 MHz is used in the study as an example to examine the working of the concept. The selection of operating conditions for the experi¬mental heating is explained. Fragmentation of Charcoal granite and Dresser basalt test rock blocks is achieved for localized heating below 550° C. The heated volume required for fragmentation is observed to be less than 2 percent of the test block volume and the electrical energy consumption is in the order of 3.5 to 6 5 kwhr/m3 The method offers a possibility for in situ fragmenta¬tion of rocks, favorable for internal heating. The new AIRDEK (tm) technique for pre-splitting in surface coal mines produces highwall conditions that have greater safety with lower costs for explosives, labor, and drilling. Successful applications have been made in highwalls ranging from 20 to 100 feet or more and in blasthole diameters from 3-1/2 inches to 12 inches.

Placas de Circuito Interno (PCI’s) são partes fundamentais de um computador, uma vez que são responsáveis pelo bom funcionamento deste. Porém, seu descartadas em áreas clandestinas, podem causar danos ao meio ambiente e a saúde pública, pois estas placas podem ter na sua composição elementos tóxicos que as tornam perigosas. O presente estudo visa qualificar e quantificar os metais presentes na fração não magnética das PCI’s, a fim de que subsequentes processos de recuperação de metais possam ser aplicados. Para que as análises pudessem ser feitas, as PCIs foram submetidas a etapas de moagem, quarteamento, separação magnética e digestão em água régia. As placas foram moídas em um moinho de martelos, utilizando grelhas de 2 mm. O resíduo cominuído seguiu para a etapa de separação magnética, obtendo-se duas frações, uma fração magnética e uma fração não magnética. Em seguida, a fração não magnética foi quarteada em amostras de 20 ± 5 g. Para realizar ensaio de digestão em água régia, foi escolhida aleatoriamente uma amostra. A digestão foi realizada durante 24 h a temperatura ambiente usando-se uma proporção sólido: líquido de 20:1. O licor obtido nos ensaio de digestão em água régia foi levado para análise química por espectrometria de emissão óptica por indução de plasma (ICP-OES). Os resultados mostraram que as placas de circuito impresso de computadores contêm na sua fração não magnética aproximadamente 60% dos metais da placa de vídeo.

This report is one of a series written by members of the Solid Fuels Mission to Germany describing wartime developments in the mining, prepara- tion, and utilization of coal. This mission was organized early in 1945 under the auspices of the Technical Industrial Intelligence Committee, which cooperated with a counterpart British Committee. In some instances; engi- neers from other allied countries cooperated. The Solid Fuels Mission operated under the direction of a steering committee headed by Dr. C. J. Potter, Deputy Solid Fuels Administrator. The personnel of the mission consisted of H. F. Yancey, in charge, J. W. Buch, Thomas Fraser, L. L. Newman, and L. D. Schmidt of the Bureau of Minos; H. H. Lowry, Director of the Coal Research Laboratory, Carnegie Institute of Technology; H. J. Rose, Vice-President and Director of Research, Bituminous Coal Research, Inc.; and F. H. Reed, Chief Chemist, Illinois Geological Survey. E. 0. Rhodes, Manager, Development Section, Tar Products Division, Koppers Co., Inc., served on the mission for the Chemical Subcommittee of 1.I.I.C. in Europe. His assignment was the investigation of the coal-tar industry. In this connection he prepared this report on the German Low- Temperature Tar Industry as a companion to his provious report on the German High-Temperature Tar Industry (Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7409). Because of Mr. Rhodes' extensive experience in these fields and the impor- tance of the subject material to the coal producers and those utilizing coal-tar products, both reports are issued by the Bureau of Mines. Over fifty reports were written by the members of the Solid Fuels Mis- elon. These, together with microfilms of supporting data obtained in the course of the investigations, are on file at the Foreign Documents Group, Technical Reports Section, Bureau of Mines, Pittsburgh, Pa., where they are available for examination. Uranium is back on the radar. Uranium has always been a controversial metal, from its role in the arms race to its claim to be the only viable alternative to fossil fuel. This paper will cover its properties and use, its occurrence and production in South Africa, the current market drivers and its future role as a primary energy fuel. It will highlight the difference between uranium used to make a bomb and uranium used in a power station. The recent significant uranium price rise will be put into context of the market drivers including geopolitical issues. Planned expansions in nuclear power station capacity will be reviewed, as will new mine production. Future demand will also be speculated on.

Testwork at Goedehoop Colliery showed that fine coal, essentially?150 microns can be successfully beneficiated using froth flotation. Both conventional and column flotation were tested. It was found that the traditional stirred tank type of flotation machines used in conventional flotation produced the best recovery of fine coal. After extensive testwork it was decided to develop a flotation machine on Goedehoop Colliery that would combine stirred tank and quiescent column technology. It was thought that this design would give the best combination of recovery and selectivity. The Multicell was developed and is producing results acceptable for Witbank coal flotation.
