"A surge bin at Agrium’s Vanscoy potash operations has been plagued with flow, wear, and corrosion issues since being built in 1967. The culprits? The bin’s carbon-steel construction, geometry, and the resultant funnel-flow pattern are the root causes. An investigation and cost analysis indicated that hopper redesign and retrofit would increase production and reduce maintenance and capital costs. The retrofitted bin provides safer, more reliable operation and has a much longer predicted working life. Using this example, the authors describe bulk-solids-flow theory and highlight the importance of customizing bulk-material-handling-system design using appropriate flow properties to improve reliability, safety, and cost effectiveness.RÉSUMÉ Depuis sa construction en 1967, un réservoir intermédiaire de l’exploitation de potasse Vanscoy d’Agrium connaît des problèmes de débit, d’usure et de corrosion. (J&J) to provide testing, consulting, and structural engineering services related to proposed modifications to the 270 t special standard product surge bin, which Agrium planned to undertake during a two-week shutdown in August 2013. The bin, which had been plagued with flow, wear, and corrosion issues for its entire working life, was essential for the continuous operation of two of VPO’s compaction plants and for efficient dispatching to loadout. The bin often experienced product hang-ups, clumping on the walls, and plugging at the hopper outlet. Two recent unscheduled mill shutdowns had been partially attributed to flow issues in the bin due to clumping and product plugging up at the screws. These problems increased maintenance costs, limited production capacity, and degraded product quality. Holes and paper-thin sections in the bin walls discovered during a 2013 inspection revealed the potential for major hot material leaks or even structural failure. Either issue would stop plant operations until the bin could be repaired or bypassed. Clearly, the bin cone had reached the end of its life and required replacement."

For many years the scrubbing of roaster gas carrying sulphur dioxide has been carried out at the plant of the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd. at Risdon, Tasmania, using long horizontal tubes. in which the gas stream crossed a shower of water. In order to provide for increased roaster capacity, it was evident that additional gas scrubbing capacity would be required to prevent pollution of the atmosphere.This provided an opportunity to review the whole operation of gas scrubbing and an investigation was initiated to determine the characteristics of a counter-current type of scrubber. It was hoped that a change to this type of scrubbing would also reduce the sulphur dioxide concentration of the gas delivered to the atmosphere to a negligible amount. This, paper outlines results obtained from an experimental tower which was operated under a wide range of conditions, the packing height, gas flow, water flow, water temperature, and concentration of S02 in inlet gas being varied independently. A description is given of the leading features and operating characteristics of the plant units, which are designed on the basis of the experimental results. Operation of the new scrubbing system commenced on October 5th, 1948.THE PROBLEMThe gas which is handled carries S02 which may vary in concentration from 2% to 5%, and reaches the scrubbing system at a temperature of approximately 180 deg. C. An appreciable amount of suspended material accompanies the gas which has passed the cyclone system.

The St. Cloud Mining Company extracts clinoptilolite about 6.5 km south of Winston, Sierra County, New Mexico. Production is about 18,000 mt/year. Natural zeolites are good adsorbents for positively charged solutes such as ammonium. St. Cloud’s production is used in animal hygiene, animal feed, environmental mitigation, air and water filtration, and other applications. By a simple chemical treatment with a surfactant, zeolites can also be modified to adsorb negatively charged solutes such as nitrate and arsentate, and neutral organics such as solvents and fuel components. These surfactant-modified zeolites are used in treating groundwater contamination, stormwater runoff, and solvent vapors from painting operations.

San Manuel has been a modern prodigy from its inception to its present status as a block-caving operation producing 33,000 tons per day. The deposit was discovered, prospected, and developed with modern techniques, and nearly all planning was done from results of an extensive drilling program through an average overburden of 670 feet. The Federal Government had a prominent part in the discovery and primary development of San Manuel. The first 17 holes were drilled by the Bureau of Mines, and discovery of the large, low-grade, disseminated copper deposit is credited to the Bureau. A loan fund of 94 million was granted through the Reconstruction Finance Corporation to the San Manuel Copper Corp. for development of the deposit and erection of concentrating and smelting facilities. Then, while the mine was still being developed, the Defense Materials Procurement Agency contracted to buy a large amount of copper at a pegged price.

The largest investment in mining equipment in Caterpillar?s history ? The F series mechanical and electrical drive trucks ? is rapidly advancing. Caterpillar showcased the 793F and 797F mechanical drive trucks and the 795F ac electric drive truck at MinExpo in 2008 and have continued testing since then. The 793F and the 797F have accumulated more than 75,000 hours of field testing and have proven their performance capabilities and their durability. The new Cat C175 engine that powers them has racked up 130,000 hours of field testing in mining trucks and more than 120,000 hours in power systems. Because of the success of these field-follow programs, the 793F is targeted to go into full production within a few months and the 797F late this year. Caterpillar engineers have been testing two 795F ac prototypes at the Tucson Proving Grounds in Arizona. The development program has provided input for the construction of a new 795F ac in Decatur, IL. The new truck recently shipped to a copper mine in North America where it will serve as the first field-follow 795F ac as it works at the mine. The 313-t- (345-st-) capacity 795F ac will enter a new size class for Caterpillar, and, as a result, the primary focus of the Caterpillar ac electric program has been on the 795F ac. The commercial launch date will be defined as the field-follow program progresses. ?It?s fitting that soon after producing the 50,000th Cat off-highway truck, we are now shipping our first ultra-class ac electric drive truck to a mine,? said Chris Curfman, president of Caterpillar Global Mining. ?Our new trucks further solidify our position as the one manufacturer to provide unparalleled options and unmatched customer support.?

The context becomes logically even more tensed when the blasting operations have to be performed above an old underground mine. The iron ore mining district of Labrador West and adjacent Quebec is Canada's largest iron ore producer with almost 50 years of production. The area is currently experiencing a period of renewed activity not seen in decades that includes new mine development, mine expansion and exploration for new iron ore resources. All of the past and present production and exploration programs in the district are centred on the Lower Proterozoic Superior-type iron formations of the Knob Lake Group, located within the Grenville tectonic province of the Canadian Shield. The Knob Lake Group is a continental margin sedimentary sequence which was deformed and subjected to greenschist to upper amphibolite facies metamorphism during the Grenville orogeny. Regional deformation and metamorphism plays a key role in making the iron formation of the Knob Lake Group economic. The distribution of orebodies in the district is controlled by superimposed F1/F2 synclines which causes thickening of the iron formation through repetition. Ore mineralogy consists of specular haematite, magnetite and locally martite with quartz as the major gangue mineral. Regional metamorphism has caused an increase in grain size of the ore minerals making it more amenable to concentrating and pelletising. Altius has been active in Labrador West since 2003 and is now the second largest licence holder in the district with several iron ore exploration projects. The Kamistiatusset project is located in the heart of the region's transportation, power and mining infrastructure. The property has seen limited previous exploration, but covers several significant iron ore prospects. Work by Altius includes a helicopter-borne magnetic survey, ground magnetic and gravity surveys, geological mapping, sampling and 6000 m of diamond core drilling all of which confirm both a favourable geologic setting and ore mineralogy.

Iron ore beneficiation plants are facing economic pressures to treat more challenging ore types, improve efficiency and improve product quality. Better control and stability of the plant process in the face of increasing feed ore variability has been a goal for many of the operations facing these challenges.Prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) technology has proven to be a successful measurement technique within an iron ore beneficiation plant. PGNAA was first developed in the early 1980s for the measurement of the elemental composition of bulk materials. Today, PGNAA technology is applied for elemental analysis within the iron ore industry on both bulk materials and slurries.Traditional composite sampling throughout the wet iron ore beneficiation process provides a delayed measurement of average properties but does not capture the true variability of the process in real-time. As such this is a limiting factor towards stabilisation and optimisation of the process. A PGNAA analyser provides real-time slurry elemental analysis of feed, concentrate and tails streams within the processing plant. The analytical data from the analyser can be exploited with a control strategy to correct and stabilise the plant on a much shorter time scale, delivering significant economic benefits and greater operational flexibility. The economic benefits include more stable product quality and a reduction in composite sampling and laboratory costs.Some example results will be presented from the Vale Vargem Grande iron ore beneficiation plants, which are utilising a six stream multiplexed Thermo Scientific PGNAA Slurry Analyser.CITATION:Noble, G, Stabile, A, Portes, E and Roberto, J, 2017. The Hamersley Group in the Pilbara, Western Australia, consist of interlayered banded iron formation (BIF) and shale host rock formations within which a large number of open pit iron ore mines have been established. The slope stability of most of the mining excavations developed within these formations is controlled by the relatively low shear strength of the shale groups and shale bands, which are the weakest rock types. Shale formations range from fresh to highly weathered and are generally highly fissile when fresh, and clayey when weathered. An accurate understanding of the shear strength of these materials across the entire weathering continuum is therefore a key importance for assessing the slope stability of these mines.Historically defect laboratory testing results for the Pilbara mines have been analysed mechanically using direct shear testing (DST) to measure a number of geotechnical characteristics of the rock bedding and defects. This paper sets out the current practice in the industry in terms of the laboratory testing and presents a possible application of hyperspectral data to empirically correlate the shear strength of shale bedding with the relative mineralogy abundance on the bedding surface. This was achieved by creating both hyperspectral and geotechnical data sets for the same samples.In the study the shale samples were separated into three distinct assemblages: iron oxide + kaolinite, iron oxide + white mica + kaolinite, white mica + kaolinite, which had 40, nine and two samples respectively. Analysing these assemblages alongside DST data showed that samples with white mica had reduced non-variable shear strength, whereas samples with iron oxide + kaolinite had an overall higher shear strength but with a greater variance. It is inferred that the reduced shear strength in the white mica samples is due to the sheet (or plate) like structure of the mineral, giving it a weak stress plane. Confidence in the trends observed can be reinforced by expanding the data set in future works. The investigation also includes a discussion on weathering grade and addresses the question as to whether mineralogy abundances influence these characteristics in Hamersley shales.CITATION:Maldonado, A, Mercer, K G and Robert, A, 2017. The mine of the Porter Coal Co. is located at the town of Porter in the northwestern part of Jefferson, County, Ala., about 20 miles west of Birmingham. The operations in this mine are confined to the middle and bottom benches of the Mary Lee bed. The coal from the Porter mine is handpicked and washed before being placed on the market. The handpicked lump coal and the washed egg and nut, coal are sold chiefly as domestic and steam-raising fuel. The coal finer than 1 inch is washed in 2-compartment jigs and utilized in the manufacture of metallurgical coke. The coal company has found that, when coal ranging in size from 1 to 0 inch is washed in jigs, a considerable amount of high-ash material finer than 3/16 inch remains in the washed coal. This paper gives the results of an investigation which was conducted for the purpose of determining the washing characteristics of the through 316-inch raw coal and the extent to which the ash might be reduced by means of coal-washing tables. This investigation has been made in connection with an. extensive study of the coal-washing problems now being conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama, with the cooperation of the coal-mining companies of the State.

"Pile installation in soil is a dynamic process which exhibits large deformation in the soil region. Experimental investigation of pile installation is both time and resource intensive. Numerical investigation can be a helpful tool for the analysis of the installation process. Furthermore, numerical analysis allows simulating various soils and loading conditions with ease. Finite Element Method (FEM) – a widely used framework for numerical simulations - fails to perform well for soil mechanics where large deformation and heavy material movement exists. In order to alleviate this shortcoming, Material Point Method (MPM), advancement to FEM has been used. In MPM, material points (particles) are used to represent the domain which carry the information and move over a fixed computational mesh where the governing equations are solved.In the present work, a variation of MPM, called CPDI (Convected Particle Domain Interpolation) is utilised which handles large deformation problems better than the classical MPM. Here, the material points are represented by a spatial domain which deforms according to the particle deformation. This eliminates stress oscillations while particles cross the grids. Implementation is validated and applied to pile installation in dry and saturated soil conditions. A 2D axisymmetric model is chosen, with penalty function method being used for evaluating contact between soil and pile. Sand is modelled via the hypoplastic constitutive description that takes into account large deformation, as well as small strain stiffness. From these simulations, various parameters like stress, void ratio and friction angle are studied.INTRODUCTIONOffshore piling is challenging in terms of testing and execution. Before the execution, predicting an efficient installation method requires study of various parameters, like soil conditions, type of loading, force requirement etc., and are the minimum parameters to be known beforehand. To obtain these parameters, testing a real scale prototype under different conditions is not feasible. Scaled model tests in lab can support in making certain decisions, but fail to replicate real behavior fully. Therefore, the need for a numerical simulation technique emerges, which can provide early predictions easily and accurately. This later can be extended to real scale tests, reducing the number of experimental investigation required.Simulation of displacement pile installation in sand involves large deformation due to penetration process, thereby making the application of FEM impossible, where large deformation causes heavy mesh distortions. Due to this, meshless methods are developed to treat large deformation in a better way. Among various meshless methods, Material Point Method (MPM) shows more applicability to geomechanical problems. This is mainly due to the ease of handling soil, structure and water in a unified manner."

"“Classification System Efficiency (CSE)” is a powerful, emerging tool that can be used to increase grinding circuit efficiency. It is defined as the percentage of the ball mill energy being used to grind target, oversize particles. The discovery, validation and current use of CSE, including how it was manipulated, are described through seven plant case studies. These resulted in efficiency improvements ranging from 3 to 30 percent, along with major reductions in over-grinding. The achievable CSE for any given circuit is described. This paper demonstrates both how, and how much, every plant can benefit from increasing grinding circuit CSE.DEFINITIONS: BALL MILL CIRCUIT “CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM EFFICIENCY (CSE)”, “EFFECTIVE MILL GRINDING POWER”: “WASTED/OVER-GRINDING MILL POWER”The closed ball mill circuit is shown in Figure 1. The extreme importance of the circulating load ratio in determining circuit productivity was demonstrated by Davis (1925) and re-published by Guadin (1939), as shown in Figure 2. The circuit production rate increases with increased circulating load ratio, rapidly so at first and continuing to increase more gradually with higher and higher values of circulating load ratio.The underlying cause of this relationship was seen when comparing the ball mill feed and product size distributions from two different ball mill circuits, one with a low circulating load ratio, and one with a high circulating load ratio (Figure 3). While the F80’s and P80’s of these two circuits were close to the same, the mill feed and discharge size distributions were quite different. The ball mill in the circuit with the higher circulating load ratio contained a substantially greater fraction of material coarser than the target P80, as indicated by the respective mill feed and discharge size distributions. This fraction represents the fraction of the mill power being expended on “coarse” (in this case, plus P80 size) material, or the circuit “classification system efficiency.” The “effective mill grinding power” is the total mill power multiplied by the CSE. The compliment of CSE, the remaining fraction of “fines” in the mill, is the fraction of the mill power being wasted, and spent on over-grinding of material already finer than the circuit target product size. This is the “wasted/over-grinding mill power”"

Localized uniform conditioning is a technique developed to spatially locate selective mining unit grades that have been derived using uniform conditioning for the assessment of recoverable resources. The technique has the advantage of producing selective mining unit estimates conforming to the uniform conditioning panel-specific grade-tonnage curve while introducing spatial information at the scale of the selective mining units. This paper describes an alternative technique to localized uniform conditioning which does not explicitly require the uniform conditioning panel-specific grade-tonnage curve to localize the selective mining unit estimates. The technique can therefore be implemented in mining software where uniform conditioning is not available.

This bibliography contains 3,062 different citations to technical and scientific literature about helium and alpha-particles abstracted by 13 abstract service publications during 1963. Multiple subject classification has increased the total number of entries to almost 5,000. Helium citations are listed by 23 major classifications. The number of subclassifications has been greatly increased to minimize the time required for literature search. The use of automatic data processing has been extended in compiling the bibliography.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) mining research program at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL), includes the areas of coal mine dust control and monitoring, and explosion prevention. One very important project at PRL is development of a continuous recording person-wearable respirable dust monitor. This Personal Dust Monitor (PDM) is a respirable dust sampler and gravimetric -equivalent analysis instrument that is part of a belt-worn mine cap lamp battery unit. Prototypes were successfully tested in the laboratory and in four underground coal mines. The PDM testing demonstrated that it was convenient to wear and use, robust, and provided accurate and timely data. NOSH is also conducting research in the program area of coal mine explosion prevention, suppression, and mitigation. Aspects of this research program include: full scale explosion research, laboratory scale research, frictional ignition of methane, mine ventilation seal construction, prediction of coal mine methane emissions, mine monitoring systems, flame cutting and welding operations, spontaneous combustion, and emergency preparedness.

"History of Whitehorse Copper BeltThe first discovery of copper on the Whitehorse Copper Belt is reported to have been made by miners on their way to the Klondike in 1897. By 1899 the district had been well prospected and many of the presently known deposits had been staked.The first shipment of ore was from the Copper King property in 1900. This consisted of 9 tons of hand picked ore grading 46.4% copper. It was not until the period between 1912 and 1917, the production years of the Pueblo Mine, that significant ore shipments were made. Total production was 140,000 tons at 3.5% copper. An underground disaster killed six men and closed the mine in March 1917.Although the general area was dormant until after World War II, by 1947 geological mapping, magnetic surveys and diamond drilling had been done on the important showings. In 1954 Mr. Aubrey Simmonds directed the formation of Imperial Mines and Metals, which acquired by option and staking a large part of the Whitehorse Copper Belt. In 1957 Mr. Arnold Pitt reorganized the company as New Imperial Mines. With financing from Sumitomo and Toronto-Dominion Bank, a mill was built and production was started from the Little chief orebody by open pit in 1967."

During the dissolution of gold in fully aerated cyanide solutions the CN ion is the active agent, and consequently the usual method of evaluating the dissolving power of such solutions is to determine the CN- concentration analytically. The presence in the solutions of copper and/or zinc which themselves form complex cyanides, may result in erroneous conclusions as to the free cyanide ion concentration determined by titration.In this paper the theory of titration of such solutions has been developed, and potentiometric methods have been used to follow the behaviour of complex cyanides of copper and zinc. The results for cuprocyanides show Cu (CN)s to be the most important copper complex, and in addition they explain the reported low rates of solution of gold in copperbearing solutions which when titrated in the usual way, appear to have adequate free cyanide. An explanation of the misleading value of the titration is given, and suggestions for recognition of the condition are offered. Preliminary results for zinc-bearing solutions show that there is no satisfactory end-point for the titration of CN- in excess of that in the complex Zn (CN) 4=, which dissociates to CN and Zn(CN)g-.
