This report is the fourth in the series, Bibliography of Investment and Operating Costs for Chemical and Petroleum Plants. The initial work, Bureau of Mines In- formation Circular 7516, was published in October 1949 in conjunction with the synthetic liquid fuels program authorized by Public Law 290, 78th Congress. It included references to and abstracts of publications appearing from 1930 to September 1948 on all processes in general use in the petroleum refining and chemical industries. A supplemental bibliography, Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7705, was published in January 1955 to cover the period September 1948 through June 1952; and Supplement 2, Information Circular 7751, published in September 1956, covered the period June 1952 through June 1954. "Rio Tinto Fer et Titane processes the ore extracted from the Lac Tio orebody to concentrate the hemo-ilmenite (FeO.TiO2-Fe2O3) mineral that is subsequently smelted to produce pig iron and titanium oxide slag. The ore is crushed, heat treated (roasted) and concentrated using dry magnetic separators. This paper describes a model to predict the magnetic susceptibility of the roasted ore and its behaviour in the magnetic separation plant. The model uses a classification of the ore as a function of the size and magnetic susceptibility of the particles. A subsequent division into mineral species allows the simulation of the magnetic separation process. The model is used to assess various operating options when process disturbances occur.INTRODUCTIONOre processing operations consist of ore size reduction followed by the recovery of valuable species in a concentrate that is subsequently sold for its minerals or metal content. The concentration processes are based on the physical and/or chemical properties of the minerals contained in the ore. Flotation is typically used to recover minerals of base metals such as copper, zinc, lead or nickel. Iron ore and other dense minerals are typically concentrated by gravity separation processes. Magnetic separation uses the magnetic properties of the minerals to concentrate magnetite and other minerals, to clean coal concentrate and to recycle ferrosilicon for dense separation processes (Brophy, 1985).Magnetic separators can be divided into low and high intensity separators and high gradient magnetic separators (Gillet, 2008). Most of the low gradient magnetic separators are built as rotary drums that are operated in wet or dry conditions. Dry magnetic drum separators are used by Rio Tinto Fer et Titane in Sorel-Tracy, Canada to concentrate hemo-ilmenite from the ore extracted at the Lac Tio Lake mine near Havre St-Pierre, Canada. The analysis of production data suggests that process improvement could be achieved by identifying key variables for the control of the magnetic separation circuit and/or by modification to the circuit flowsheet. The use of a process model was considered to be an effective approach to conduct a preliminary analysis of the circuit with a view toward process optimization. However, the literature contains few detailed studies dealing with the modelling of magnetic separation processes."

A maioria dos materiais poliméricos sintéticos apresentam superfícies quimicamente inertes, isentas de porosidade e baixa energia de superfície. Este trabalho tem como objetivo realizar a modificação superficial do substrato têxtil de forma a aumentar a sua molhabilidade. Os tecidos de poliéster são hidrofóbicos e, por isso são desconfortáveis aos usuários, pois a fibra não absorve o suor do corpo, outro fator que é prejudicado pela hidrofobicidade da fibra de poliéster é o tingimento das mesmas. Portanto, tratamentos superficiais vêm sendo utilizados para minimizar esse problema e o plasma é uma técnica que se mostra bastante eficaz. O plasma ao interagir com a superfície do substrato provoca alterações químicas e físicas melhorando suas propriedades. Portanto, através do plasma é possível alterar as propriedades físico-químicas das superfícies de tecidos de poliéster, tendo como resultado o aumento da hidrofilidade dos mesmos com o incremento de grupos funcionais polares e o aumento da rugosidade em sua superfície. As amostras foram tratadas em um reator de plasma de barreira dielétrica a pressão atmosférica, em diferentes tempos de tratamento e voltagem. Após as funcionalizações as amostras foram submetidas ao teste de capilaridade, a fim de observar a melhora na hidrofilidade. Todas as amostras tratadas tiveram aumento na molhabilidade, com exceção, as amostras tratadas com 10 kV, onde não houve alteração.

Since the promulgation of the first Federal Asbestos Standard by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration in 1972, other federal agencies have modified the standard to better carry on their own unique missions. The instruments used to identify and measure asbestos, the sampling protocol, and the criteria used to define asbestos, have been modified to some degree. The Mine Safety and Health Administration regulates and controls asbestos dust in the mining and mineral commodity industries. However, crushed stone and processed ores contain mineral fragments that are frequently difficult to distinguish from asbestos. Mineral nomenclature, instruments for particle analysis, and sampling strategy must be accommodated to some degree to make asbestos control workable and meaningful. Precedent in other agencies has made consideration of these changes possible. Newly identified amphibole asbestos minerals have further complicated the agency?s regulatory charge. Changes in its Asbestos Standard are now being considered. Crushed taconite ore in the Eastern Mesabi highlights many of these issues. ©2008 Published by Elsevier Inc. Cobalt/tungsten mineralization at Mt. Cobalt, located 170 km southeast of Mt. Isa in northwestern Queensland, is described. Mineralization occurs in the Kuridala Formation of the Mary Kathleen Group, which is composed dominantly of pelitic schists, carbonates and acid and basic volcanics.Rocks in the region are metamorphosed to amphibolite facies and affected by two generations of tight to isoclinal folds and a third, more open generation of folds. The region is divided into three meridionally trending belts on the basis of structural style, with mineralization concentrated in the central, more highly strained belt.Deformation and metamorphism is probably younger than 1670 m.a., and the rocks are intruded by granitic rocks dated at 1509 ± 22 m.a.Mineralization occurs in shear zones at the contact between an amphibolite and enclosing pelitic schists, and within the amphibolite itself. Mineralization consists of cobaltite and scheelite with lesser chalcopyrite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, i1menite, allanite, xenotime and apatite. The mineralizing event involved addition of K, Cl, CO2 W, As, Cu, Ni, Au and rare earths and depletion of Ca and Na. It altered a hornblendeandesine/labradorite host assemblage to a biotiteoligoclase/andesine-scapolite assemblage. Though tourmalinealteration also occurs, it is probably not related to mineralization.It is concluded that the mineralization and alteration assemblages formed by reaction of saline fluids with amphibolite close to the peak of amphibolite facies metamorphism.The fluids are probably metamorphically derived, and their movement was channelled through high strain zones in the sequence. The material carried by the fluids was derived from the metasedimentary/metavolcanic pile as a whole.Other deposits in the Mt. Cobalt-Selwyn area have characteristics comparable with Mt. Cobalt, and the mechanism for the genesis of Mt. Cobalt may have applications at other areas in the region.

"This paper indicates the extent to which Canadian coal mine operators have taken advantage of developments in the science and technology of coal that would allow them to better satisfy changing market demands through improving the properties of their products. At some mines, no attempt is made to alter the coal from its as-mined condition, but at most mines grading into various size ranges and hand-cleaning of lump sizes is undertaken.Over-all, Canada Jags behind most of the other major world coal producers in the proportion of its coals being processed in wash plants. To some extent, this is due to the fact that a high proportion of the coal production satisfies market demands without such treatment. On the other hand, a few of the coal mines in Canada, which produce about 25 per cent of the nation's total coal output, have in operation some of the most modern coal beneficiating equipment available, including jigs, flotation cells, water cyclones, centrifuges, disc filters and thermal dryers."

The effects of water addition on the solid-state reaction between Cr2O3 and Na2CO3 at low temperatures (up to 873 K) were investigated to determine its possible influence on the reaction rate and the degree of conversion to soluble chromate. Experiments at high temperatures were conducted for comparison. It was found that adding water to the mixture before roasting enhanced both reaction rate and yield significantly. The reactions followed the Lesokhin-Tempelman equation at low temperature and the Ginstling-Brounshtein equation at above 973 K; the respective activation energies were 95 and 22 kJ/mol

The room temperature tensile properties of commercially pure titanium and seven titanium alloys prepared by skull casting were determined in the as-cast and heat-treated conditions. Data were compared with property data from tensile tests on wrought alloys of the same compositions in the as-worked and heat-treated conditions. The alloys evaluated were Ti-5Al-2.5Sn, Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-6Al-4V-lSi, Ti-6A1-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo, Ti-6A1-6V-4Zr-4Mo, Ti-6A1-6V-2Sn, and Ti-11.5Mo-6Zr-4.5Sn. Test specimens were prepared from both static and centrifugal castings and from plate fabricated by forging and rolling vacuum-melted ingots. The data indicate that the alpha and alpha-beta alloys have strength properties in the as-cast condition that are reasonably close to the strength properties of their wrought counterparts in the as-worked condition. An exception to this was the Ti-6A1-6V-4Zr-4Mo alloy for which insufficient data were available to form any firm conclusions. Fine-grained cast structures of Beta III (Ti-11.5Mo-6Zr-4.5Sn) were shown to be generally stronger in the as-cast condition than the wrought alloy in the as-worked condition except for the yield strength of one structure that was unusually low. Heat treatment of this alloy produced properties that were unpredictable. Indications are, however, that optimization of heat treatment parameters for each cast structure could produce strength properties equal to that of wrought materials.

This paper mainly reported separation manganese silver oxidized ores process by amylum de-gradation reduction and its influencing factors. When dosage is given according to nMn : nH2SO4 : n(C6H10O5)n : nH2O=1:k21.8: k116.66:30, the amount of up to 95.93% Mn leach rate and less than 2% silver loss can be obtained. Cyanidation process was used to extracted silver from leaching Mn residues. Silver leach rate could reach 94.15% at consumed amount of 1kg/t NaCN for 1h. Silver leach recovery rate was more than 92.27% by leaching Mn and cyanidation two-step processes so manganese and silver were separated effectively.

As a result of interest by the U.S. Department of Energy, the Bureau of Mines conducted studies on comminution of bituminous coal to the 2-um particle size range using the Bureau-developed turbomill. Both "plant grind" size (80 pct minus 75 um) and microsize (minus 10 um) coal can be produced in a single step with the Bureau's turbomill. In 15 min, minus 2.4-mm coal milled in water with steel shot was reduced tc 65 pct minus 75 m and 26 pct minus 2 m, with an energy requirement of 139 kW^h/mt coal. Plant-grind size coal milled in water, with Ottawa sand as the milling medium, was reduced to more than 45 pct minus 2 m in 15 min, at 175 kW?h/mt. Plant-grind coal milled with steel shot was reduced to 57 pct minus 2 um in 15 min, at 138 kW?h/mt. When diesel fuel was substituted for water, the milling of the coal was less effective and less energy efficient. Keeping the pulp dispersed was critical. Without an effective dispersant, the slurry became very viscous with increased milling time, resulting in higher energy requirements, low heat dissipation, and poor grinding efficiency.

Static-Load Piledriving systems utilize hydraulic push to advance piles into the ground. Dynamic systems (ie. hammers and vibratory equipment) utilize impact, or vibration, to advance the piles. Static-Load systems are most commonly utilized in situations where noise or vibration would adversely affect the people, structures or equipment located near the site. Static-Load technology is most advantageous in situations where vibration, noise or access constraints make it difficult, risky or disruptive to utilize conventional piledriving systems.

Carbonyl sulfide (COS) was decomposed to sulfur and CO in a silent electrical discharge. A threshold of about 4 kv at 60 Hz was required to dissociate the gas in a laboratory ozonizer at 790 torr with electrode gaps between 1 and 5.5 mm. Above the threshold value, the reaction rate increased with increasing voltage with helium or nitrogen diluent. With the latter diluent, higher voltages had to be applied to obtain the same yield in the 4-to 12-kv range. The COS decomposition rate increased with COS concentration, but a saturation value was reached at about 10 pct COS. The reaction rate decreased at low linear gas velocities as obtained at lower gas flows, larger electrode gaps, or larger reactor volumes. Increasing gas temperature also decreased the decomposition rate. The presence of solid adsorbents such as quartz wool, bauxite, or charcoal had no significant effect on the reaction rate. The addition of S02 did not affect the COS decomposition rate, but small amounts of water decreased the reaction rate. Over 50 pct of the COS was decomposed at room temperature and atmospheric pressure in a l7-kv ozonizer using a gas containing 0.9 pct COS in helium flowing at a rate of 0.3 liter/min. The average current was less than 5 ma. This method has possible application in eliminating the toxic air pollutant, COS, which is generated in petroleum refineries and in processes involving reactions between sulfurous and carbonaceous materials. Carbon monoxide that is formed can be further oxidized to CO2 after the collection of elemental sulfur.

"Near-field monitoring of blast induced seismic vibrations is a practical and useful way of assessing blast field behaviour for diagnosis and optimization purposes. It is also necessary in order to provide the information from which empirical vibration prediction equations, such as the one proposed by Holmberg (11 for example, can be derived. (Strictly speaking, the “near field” extends from the blasthole itself to about one charge length away from it; however, throughout this article, “near field”will.most often refer to the outer limit of this zone, from roughly 0.75 to 1.50 charge length away.) In order to obtain reliable data, proper field monitoring techniques are of paramount importance. Once the data are properly recorded, analysis can be done either in the time domain (describing vibration amplitude vs. time) or in the frequency domain (usually describing vibration amplitude vs. frequency)."

An experimental evaluation of a selective agglomeration process in which an agglomerated coal rich phase was produced as a result of mixing light oil to various raw coal slurries is described. The beneficiation achieved by this method is compared to that obtained bv conventional froth flotation. The results suggest' that oil agglomeration is a more selective process than froth flotation and is less sensitive to variations in feed pulp density. Selective agglomeration has the additional advantage of producing a low moisture content product. The effect of replacing flotation filter cake with an equivalent amount of selectively agglomerated product in coke-making was studied with the aid of a pilot-scale coke oven. The results suggest that the principal effect of such a measure is to increase the bulk density of the charge.

“Excelência no atendimento aos clientes” é uma máxima declarada como busca constante em todos os segmentos de mercado, inclusive no de aços longos, negócio da ArcelorMittal Monlevade. Com foco neste objetivo, muitas vezes, a empresa se volta para o mercado na tentativa de mapear as necessidades dos clientes. Após identificá-las, e absorvê-las, acaba-se criando complexidades em processos tanto em produtos quanto em serviços. A cada internalização de demanda, segue-se a rotina sob a ameaça de transformar o processo de atendimento em algo confuso e desatualizado, além de não haver segurança de que o cliente está satisfeito de fato. Este trabalho mostra o histórico recente de uma expressiva evolução do atendimento aos clientes da unidade de Monlevade, resultado obtido através de análises, utilizando a metodologia PDCA, que orientaram a uma nova estrutura da equipe de atendimento na Gerência de Logística, implicando em reformulação de acompanhamentos/controles de processos e intensificação dos contatos com pessoas envolvidas com atendimento aos clientes dentro e fora da planta. Com isso, foi possível superar, de forma consonante, a proposta da Logística Central de implantação de uma “Célula de Atendimento” em cada unidade da ArcelorMittal. Conclui-se que é necessário rever periodicamente a rotina de processos internos de modo a buscar um equilíbrio entre as necessidades dos clientes, complexidades geradas e resultado dos índices de atendimento.
