A indústria cerâmica utiliza as argilas como matéria-prima para fabricação de cerâmica vermelha, branca, de material refratário, entre outros. Possuem um vasto campo de aplicação devido às suas características que, em geral, são decorrentes de sua composição química e do processo de fabricação que lhe originou, tais como: temperatura de queima, proporção dos componentes e granulometria da matéria-prima utilizadas. Comumente vem sendo realizada a substituição de parte da massa argilosa por resíduos industriais, para aproveitamento de materiais, diminuição de custos e impacto ambiental. Nesse presente trabalho, foi realizado um planejamento fatorial em dois níveis das variáveis de adição de pó, temperatura de queima e pressão de compactação nas propriedades de densidade, retração linear de secagem (RLS) e de queima (RLQ). A coloração final também foi um parâmetro analisado. A temperatura parece ser a variável que mais influenciou nos resultados de densidade e RLQ. A pressão de compactação dos corpos de prova não foi uma variável significativa na densidade, RLS e RLQ. Logo, a condição ótima para fabricação dos corpos cerâmicos foi com incorporação de 10% de pó de despoeiramento em substituição ao solo argiloso e temperatura de queima de 1000°C.

Mineralogy, traditionally associated with concentrator studies, is being increasingly applied to problems in pyrometallurgy. Such investigations commonly make use of a number of techniques, and the results are combined for a meaningful interpretation, which can lead to a successful solution for the problem. Mineralogical techniques are described for various pyrometallurgical operations. Examples are given of studies and investigations involving mineralogy in chemical-looping combustion, feed monitoring to platinum-smelting furnaces, and losses to slag in base metal and platinum smelting.

Many of you radio listeners have probably never seen a mine . You may be glad of it, but you should not forget that there is a vast army of men in this country who not only have to see mines , but have to work in them day by day in order that you may be supplied with many of the things you need. Specifically , nearly a million men work in the mines of the United States , 700,000 in the coal mines , 110,000 in the metal mines , 100,000 in other mines and quarries , and 75,000 in the oil and gas fields . On a stormy night , the average citizen is apt to think of the perils of the seaman . Particularly in the old days before steamships , many a prayer went up " God help the poor sailor on a night like this . " At the same time , the sailormen often expressed fear for the poor landlubber , exposed as he was to the danger of falling chimneys , swaying signboards , and uprooted trees . So with the miner . Many of you may pity him , for working underground in complete darkness except for feeble artificial lighting , mining coal or ore , drilling hard rock , handling explosives , and perhaps breathing vitiated air . On the other hand , on stormy days , with rain , snow or hail falling , and with the temperature low , or on hot bright days , I have often heard miners joke about the poor fellows who had to stay " on top, " and could not get " down below" where there was no wind , where no snow fell, where the temperature was unchanging , and where a man could have his own working place , arranged to suit himself , with little interference from meddlers and with no automobiles to dodge . So do not feel too sorry for the miner . He is quite apt to be a strong , healthy , hearty person , making pretty good wages , and fairly well contented with his lot .

À medida que os depósitos minerais de alta qualidade vão se exaurindo e a contínua busca por menores custos operacionais aumentando, as rotas de beneficiamento de minério tornam-se mais complexas, gerando custos de capital cada vez maiores. Dessa forma, surgem desafios não somente para a redução desses custos, mas também para validação do dimensionamento dos equipamentos, teste das lógicas de controle, treinamento operacional e redução do tempo de start-up. No presente trabalho é realizada uma breve revisão bibliográfica sobre o atual cenário de simulação de processos na indústria mineral e é mostrado como essa tecnologia se encaixa em todas as etapas do desenvolvimento de projetos. Especificamente, são apresentados estudos de dimensionamento de linhas de processo e dimensionamento de bombas centrífugas em casos técnicos em que o software IDEAS foi utilizado como ferramenta de simulação dinâmica para validação do processo, reduzindo o impacto financeiro em etapas posteriores. Como exemplo dos resultados das validações, mais de 40 bombas tiveram seu dimensionamento reavaliado e mais de 10 tubulações tiveram seus diâmetros revisados. Os resultados observados corroboram o grande potencial tanto da ferramenta computacional, quanto da simulação de processos de modo geral.

The Archaeozoic Willyama Complex at Broken Hill has suffered several periods of deformation and metamorphism. New structural and petrological information together with that available from the literature gives a picture of the metamorphic evolution of the Barrier Ranges. Several epochs of metamorphism are recognized, and potassium-argon dating of minerals has been applied with limited success to the resolution of these epochs.INTRODUCTIONAdvancements in the mineral industry at Broken Hill over the past eighty years have been accompanied by a continual striving towards increased understanding of both the geological history of the Barrier Ranges and the environment of the Broken Hill ore deposits. However, although many detailed studies of selected localities and particular-aspects of Broken Hill geology have been carried out recently, the regional geology of the Barrier Ranges as a whole has received little attention from a petrological viewpoint since the pioneer investigations of Mawson (1912) and Browne (1922). There still remains a great need for regional surveys combining field studies of the habits, structures and outcrop relationships of the various rock types with laboratory investigations of their chemistry, mineralogy and microscopic ,fabrics. Recording observations arising from three brief visits to the Broken Hill area during 1959 and 1963 may stimulate further surveys.During one of these visits, the generosity of the Zinc Corporation Limited in providing field transport and geological guidance enabled the writer to collect material and study field relationships and appearance of the various rock types at numerous localities covering most of the Willyama outcrop. NEW YORK'S largest hotel, the Pennsylvania, will be filled with mining and oil men and metallurgists the third week of February when some 3000 AIME members, their wives, and guests will gather for the Institute's 1948 Annual Meeting-its 166th general meeting. Except for the usual Sunday afternoon and evening sessions of the Mineral Industry Education Division at the Columbia University Men's Faculty Club, the big assembly will be under one top and members will not this year have to consult compass and map to find their next session. Possibly enervated by the stupendous effort of the Anniversary Celebration last spring and the plethora of highly successful fall meetings, the various committees have been a trifle slow in arranging their social and technical programs, but in mid December as we go to press there is already much to report indicative of substantial fare and high interest. The definite timetable schedule will appear in the February M&M.

This paper discusses the operating model within Endeavour Mining Corporation regarding the options of owner mining against contract mining. It’s based on the concept of ‘are we carrying out the most efficient mining’ regarding cost and performance. This question can only be answered through an extensive contract mining tender process and conducting a comprehensive comparison to evaluate the transition viability. Karma mine, located in Burkina Faso, is the subject of this paper. The Tender model included sales of equipment, parts and tooling associated with the traditional Load and Haul Schedule of Rates (SOR). The methodology focused on the structure of the tender process, which consists in the development of a SOR based on haulage profiles and mining schedule. This is a new Endeavour framework that allowed the bidders to compete on an even level. This was performed using a systemic analysis which encompassed all the elements involved in a transition such as the Human Resources (HR), taxes and customs implications, directs and non-direct costs (Finance and interest on assets, depreciation, insurance), contractor risk profiling. It was assessed against the normalised internal pricing tender-based. This paper gives an insight into how a West African mining operation addressed the sensitivities of the HR functions against the commercial aspects. This was one of the most successful transitions in West Africa and was carried out during the COVID crisis. The outcome of this project has created value by detailing a lesson learned model for both commercial and HR aspects. This discusses the commercial comparisons along with the internal model with the underlying HR functions as a risk factor that could have jeopardised the continuation of the operation. This resulted in a smooth transition with the additional cash flow generated by the sale of the parts and equipment turned Karma into a viable operation.

"The Zambian copper mining industry as we know it today had its genesis in the 1920s. Consistent private sector-driven investment in the industry over a period of over 50 years in exploration, mine development and operation, development of minerals processing facilities, building of infrastructure for pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processing, with attendant support facilities, including building of whole new towns, resulted in copper production rising to a peak of 769 000 t in 1969, providingover 62 000 direct jobs. The industry was nationalized in 1973 and remained in government hands for just over 24 years. During this period, the industry experienced a serious decline in production levels, reaching the lowest level in the year 2000 when production was 250 000 t. An average of just under 2000 jobs were lost every year in the 24-year period, reaching just over 22 000 direct jobs in 2000.Following the return of Zambian politics to pluralism and liberalized economic policies, the government decided to privatize the mining industry. The process started in 1996 and by the year 2000 all the mining assets had been privatized. The new investors embarked on serious investment to upgrade the assets and to develop greenfield mining projects. Fourteen years later and after more than US$12 billion investment, production levels increased year-on-year to a peak of 763 000 t in 2013 with direct jobs reaching 90 000.This paper discusses the impact of the mining industry in Zambia on the economy in areas such as employment, support for other industries, direct contribution to the national gross domestic product (GDP), foreign exchange earnings, and social amenities. The paper also focuses on the performance of the mines during these periods vis-à-vis mineral availability, mineral grades and complexity, new technologies, and human capital. This is looked at particularly in the light of current challenges the industry is facing. Suggestions are proposed on how the industry can be nurtured to continue being a major driver for the Zambian economy and a major player in the international copper mining business."

In the first Report of Investigations of the present series?(No. 4562) the usual course of progress ill reducing the minerals of low-grade ores to their valuable metallic components had been noted as advancing along two lines to concentrate a usually diminishing percentage of these minerals to a smaller bulk of richer product, and then to smelt the smaller bulk more cheaply per pound of metal produced. Fundamental properties of lead compounds made it difficult to treat much richer lead products than are treated at present in several steps of conventional lead smelting, unless ?marked modifications were made. No limits to the richness of the feed itself' were set by the ore (Scotch) hearth; on the contrary, the richer the feed, the better the results given by the hearth. The natural field of operation of the hearth, as determined by the ores available, was seen to lie in the Central United States, with their lead concentrates containing negligible quantities of precious metals and. with few ores of such metals available for use as fluxes. It was noted) however, that even in its chosen field, the Scotch hearth, or "ore" hearths developed from them, was not always used; the usual smelting practice was followed, at times, of sintering followed by blast-furnace smelting for even rich ores.

The Leuna Factory of the I. G. Farbenindustrie A. G., situated near Merseburg, is the biggest heavy-chemical plant in Germany and produces a very wide range of products, mainly based on hydrogen or hydrogen and carbon monoxide. Its principal products are ammonia, synthetic petrol derived from the hydrogenation of brown coal, and synthetic alcohols made from hydrogen and carbon monoxide. The plant was first, visited on April 21, 1945, by a team including E. Cotton, V. Haensel, E. B. Peck, P. K. Kuhne, H. M. Weir, L. L. Hirst, W. W. Odell, G. U. Hopton, H. Hollings, J. F. Ellis, and H. G. Simpson. It was again visited on May 8-24, 1945, by a combined British and American team consisting of R, Holroyd, M. A. G, Banks, D. A. Howes, A. J. V. Underwood, R. A. Taylor, W. F. Faragher, H. Schindler, and J. G. Allen. This team was later joined by J. F. Ellis and R. J. Morley. A third visit with particular reference to catalyst manufacture was made by W. F. Faragher and W. A. Horne, and the notes of these latest investigators have been taken into account in preparing the report. This report was edited by Dr. R. Holroyd.

The minerals sector continues to draw attention from policy makers who would want to see both old and new mineral projects add value to the minerals in the host country. The current technological development in the leaching of manganese oxide ores to produce a high-purity manganese sulphate monohydrate, a compound that is used in the manufacture of batteries for electric vehicles or long-life storage cells for the renewable energy market, has led to junior mining companies spearheading this technology in new projects across the globe. In this paper, we researched the high-purity manganese sulphate monohydrate project pipeline and used projected production volumes and C1 cash costs to construct the industry supply curve for six projects, including the K.Hill project owned by Giyani Metals Corporation near Kanye, in the southern part of Botswana. The aim was to determine the ideal conditions that would provide a comparative advantage for further local value addition to high-purity manganese sulphate monohydrate and to the end user product. The results showed that while the estimated C1 cash costs would place the K.Hill project as the second highest cost producer from among five projects, it would nonetheless have healthy profit margins due to the high projected price of high-purity manganese sulphate monohydrate. The study recommended policy options, which, if implemented, could further encourage the exploitation and value addition of battery metals in Botswana.

Two potential modified in situ methods are described for recovering the 68% "unrecoverable" hydrocarbons in oil reservoirs. For the 300 billion barrels of conventional light crude a Drip Drainage system is suggested by mining underneath a reservoir and producing from below by controlled gravity flow. For the 200 billion barrels of heavy or viscous oil and tar sands deposits a Flip Flop process is described using surface flooding with hot water saturated with surfactant and weighting additives. Mining engineering description of shafts and tunnels required are included as is discussion of the tunnel proximity to a reservoir. Petroleum engineering flow equations to describe production rates and candidate reserve areas of the U.S. are described. DCF economics are provided to indicate that current oil prices may be sufficient to commercially develop these recovery methods.

THE sudden death of Dr. Drown, on Nov. 17, 1904, brought to multitudes the pang of personal loss. Of all those who, as students at Lafayette College, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Lehigh University, were brought under his influence, not one can have forgotten him, and all will now acknowledge, with an unfading gratitude, what they owe in professional equipment to his wise, clear, skillful guidance, and in character to his sympathetic, stimulating personality. Outside of this wide circle, the experts of both hemispheres will lament the departure of one who, in his department of scientific inves¬tigation, both knew what work was needed, and how to do it so that it needed not to be done again. The older members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers will remember with gratitude the part he took, as Secretary from 1873 to 1884, in promoting the interest of that organization, and in shaping the plan and policy which it has followed with such noteworthy success. And, in addition to all these (though partly included among them), there are a host of friends; who can scarcely think of the public loss by reason of their own. Thomas Messenger Drown was born March 19, 1842, at Phil¬adelphia, Pa. His parents were natives of New England; and. he was the youngest of their three sons. The uppermost subsoil profiles of the Bangkok plain can be divided into four layers, namely: weathered clay, soft clay, stiff clay, and dense sand layers. The soft Bangkok clay is a normally consolidated marine clay with built-up preconsolidation effects and overlain by a weathered crust. Up to the present, a large number of full-scale tests on excavations and pile foundations has been made by numerous investigators. Based on these results, the available data are reviewed and evaluated. The results show that for test excavations, the excess pore pressures were overpredicted by the existing theories. The vertical and lateral movements in the excavations can be predicted by the bilinear and non-linear finite elements using appropriate modulus values. Relationships among probability of failure, safety factor, and safety margin of the excavation were also obtained. In the case of pile foundations, good agreement between the measured and predicted ultimate pile capacities were obtained for long piles. The adhesion factors ranged from 0.4 to 1.0 while the average skin friction factor was found to be 0.33. The ultimate capacity of the pile was also predicted successfully by using the Dutch cone data. For lateral deflection of piles, Davisson and Gill's theory predicted well in the low deflection zone while Poulos' theory agreed well in the high deflection zone. From the probabilistic analysis of ultimate pile capacity, the probability of failure was related to the central factor of safety.
