This publication describes a thermal-recovery project and two waterflood projects in Carter, Garvin, and Stephens Counties, Okla., that will be visited during the 1966 annual tour by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Kansas-Oklahoma Waterflood Association. Among the unique features of the projects arc (1) the movement of heavy (15° to 28° API gravity) crude oil through the reservoir and into the well bore with energy furnished by burning a portion of the crude oil therein; (2) the use of an inverted nine-spot pattern with dually completed injection wells, to produce oil from deep (8,200 to 10,200 feet) reservoirs; and (3) the flooding of five sand lenses separately by using controlled water injections through multizone completed injection wells. Discussion of the individual projects includes information on their early history, method of completing and operating wells, source and treatment of injection fluids, oil production decline curves, and the results obtained from the development.

Exploration for seafloor massive sulfides is currently mainly focused on investigation for active hydrothermal vent fields. However, most of the resource potential is thought to be related to inactive, large deposits that had enough time to accumulate sufficient tonnage. At the same time, ageing of these deposits will ultimately result also in burial acted by either sediments and/or volcanic deposits. We currently lack the technologies to explore for these deposits in a time- and cost-efficient manner. In the fall of 2012 we used a number of AUV-based technologies to explore and image a sulfide occurrence at the Palinuro Volcanic Complex in the Tyrrhenian Sea (Mediterranean Sea; Fig. 1) where sampling and drilling have documented a buried polymetallic barite-pyrite dominated site (Petersen et al., 2014). Sulfide mineralization is here covered by volcaniclastic and pelagic sediments and only red sediment staining and the presence of few tubeworm bushes indicated recent hydrothermal activity - black smoker venting is absent. We used AUVbased high-resolution bathymetry, sidescan sonar imaging, subbottom profiling, as well as magnetics to describe, in a quantitative way, the previously known sulfide-bearing areas as well as to successfully explore for new hydrothermal sites including large chimney structures (Figs. 2). Additionally chemical sensors (CTD, Eh, turbidity) investigated the water column for signs of hydrothermal activity in areas not previously investigated, but at the end, only weak anomalies were found in the southern part of the summit.

The mining industry is generally regarded as a high risk industry, mainly because of the difficulties in estimating the tonnage and grade of mineral resources, the fluctuations in metal prices, mining problems and other problems which occur with mining in offshore and remote locations, such as appropriation or disruption to supply. As a consequence, finance providers require a high reward from mining projects. In the past two decades, the development of "mega" projects has led to the packaging of the finance becoming more sophisticated. Some would see this move as a measure of the evolution of banking rather than an intrinsic facet of mining finance itself. Project financial managers now require a thorough knowledge of all the financial tools which are available and have to be aware of the funding options so that they can put together a finance package which minimises the cost of the financing with the risk spread adequately between the partners of the financing. The different sources and types of finance for mining projects are described herein along with the factors which determine their costs. To understand the ramifications of financing mining projects, it is essential to appreciate the fundamental difference between debt and equity, which illustrates the importance of gearing. Costs of finance are determined by the interaction of supply and demand forces. Bankers and other financiers have become more adept at isolating a wide selection of risk elements and have devised a formidable range of insurance mechanisms. There is still a lot of money looking for good project risks and if a good project is properly presented and structured, financing can be obtained in today's market.

This paper focuses on the underground tunnel work at the Hollywood Water Quality Improvement Project (HWQIP) in Los Angeles, CA. The HWQIP is being constructed to provide a water distribution system to bypass the existing Hollywood Reservoir System, which supplies drinking water for 500,000 people. The major project features include, a 2.9-meter diameter 1,829 meter long bypass tunnel, a 1.8-meterdiameter 366 meter long utility tunnel, 3 jack and bore tunnels, two 136 million liters underground circumferentially wrapped pre-stressed concrete water storage tanks, associated piping, and mechanical facilities. The physical project location coupled with strong community involvement and stringent environmental concerns was a considerable driving force for this project located in the Cahuenga Pass area of the Hollywood Hills north of Los Angeles, CA.

In stopes of the 2000- and 2150-ft. levels in the North mine section of North Broken Hill Limited, whence a substantial proportion of the company's production is being drawn, and especially in stopes which involve the portion known as the Northern orebody, occurs it light-coloured friable porous material which represents average grade ore from which the lead and zinc minerals, and certain gangue constituents, have been largely or wholly removed by leaching. The 2000- and 2150-ft. levels lie, respectively, 1550 and 1700 ft. below extreme base of the pre-mine oxidized zone. Composition of the cellular product shows it to be supergene. INTRODUCTION The Point Lepreau nuclear generating station was constructed in the late 1970's and early 1980's by the New Brunswick Electric Power Commission. Point Lepreau is a small peninsula on the north shore of the Bay of Fundy, about 55 km west of St. John, New Brunswick. Cooling water for the plant was to be obtained from and discharged into the Bay of Fundy by the system of shafts and tunnels illustrated in Fig. 1. The design engineer for the cooling water system was Albery, Pullerits, Dickson and Associates, Ltd., Toronto. Ferrera-Resco Ltd, Windsor, Ontario, was contractor for construction of the cooling water shaft and tunnel system, which was done between 1976 and 1979. The senior author was project manager for Ferrera-Resco, the junior author served as consultant to Ferrera-Resco on evaluation of certain geotechnical questions which arose during construction. SITE CONDITIONS Geology Except for limited overburden soils at the onshore shaft sites, the tunnels and shafts were constructed entirely in Triassic conglomerate, sandstone, and siltstone, with some shale interbeds. The bedding strike averaged about N6°E, The dip was to the west at about 30° along the Discharge Tunnel and 40° along the Intake Tunnel. Rock along the Intake Tunnel was mostly sandstone and siltstone and more thinly bedded, with RQ D generally in the range of 50 to 60%. Rock along the Discharge Tunnel tended to be coarser sandstone and conglomerate and more thickly bedded, with higher RQ D averaging about 80%. Vertical flow is an important mechanism in many petroleum reservoirs. Yet no adequate method has heretofore been proposed for determining the in-situ vertical permeability in a reasonable length of time. Core measurements of vertical permeability do not necessarily represent effective in-situ values. Cores may be representative of only localized pockets of high or low permeability, and total reliance on cores might cause one to overlook the presence of vertical fractures altogether. Conventional single-well tests, interference tests, and pulse tests commonly are used to determine horizontal transmissibility, khh/u, but generally are not designed to measure vertical trans-missibility or other groups containing vertical permeability, ku. A new well test described here provides a measure of in-situ vertical permeability as well as the previously measurable horizontal permeability. This "vertical test" determines the vertical diffusivity, kv/gcu, and horizontal transmissibility, khd1/u (where dl is the length of injection or production perforations). The test is basically a short-term interference or pulse test normally lasting less than a day. Conventional down-hole equipment is used between two isolated sets of perforations in the same well, as shown in Fig. 1. A "layer-cake" description of a reservoir can be obtained by running two or more vertical tests in the same well, each over different vertical intervals. Each test can be analyzed for the effective vertical and horizontal properties of the interval tested. In addition, a vertical well test can determine the effective- ness of a shale barrier or tight zone by testing across it. Field use to date of vertical testing has confirmed its utility in reservoir description. Mathematical Basis Interpretation of vertical tests for ku and kh is based on comparison of measured pressure response with computer-generated response. Pressure behavior during a vertical test in a homogeneous, anisotropic, infinite-acting reservoir (infinite in radial extent and bounded in both directions vertically) is given by the diffusion equation for slightly compressible fluids with negligible gravity effects.l A schematic diagram of the problem is presented in Fig. 2, and an analytic solution, based on the image

Resue mining was practiced extensively in the East Rand in the first half of this century. The obvious benefits were that a higher grade of ore was trammed to the surface. The disadvantages were slow rates of face advance and an extremely labour-intensive method of mining. A collaborative effort by personnel from Avgold?s Target Gold Mine and Sandvik Tamrock has resulted in the design of a method of resue mining which can be totally mechanized. The purpose of this paper is to describe the methodology used and the proposed new mechanized resue mining method.

As part of the New York City’s redevelopment of the far west side of mid-town Manhattan, this project will add 1.5 miles of twin bored tunnel to No. 7 Subway Line. The proposed alignment extending from the Times Square Station west beneath 41stStreet turning south under Eleventh Avenue and terminating at 25th Street will include two new stations. The tunnels and station caverns will be primarily constructed in the Manhattan Schist, and will pass in close proximity to several major overly ingstructures. This paper discusses the lithology and structural discontinuities of rockmass along the project alignment, tunnel and cavern rock loading, groundwater hydrology, groundwater quality, groundwater treatment and sustainable design.

"The Strathcona Concentrator is one of three concentrators presently operated in the Sudbury District by the Nickel Division of Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited. Production commenced in 1968 at a milling rate of 6,300 tons per operating day. Milling capacity was increased in 1970 to 7,200 tons per operating day. 7he ore contains iron, nickel and copper primarily in the form of pyrrhotite, pentlandite and chalcopyrite, while the common gangue minerals are feldspar, quartz, mica, talc and chlorite. The primary function of the concentrators is not only to liberate sulphides from silicate gangue minerals but also to separate pyrrhotite from the more valuable minerals pentlandite and chalcopyrite.SummaryExcessive wear on steel liners and blinding of grates in a regrind pebble mill of the Hardy Concentrator was corrected by the use of rubber liners and grates. The success of these resulted in their installation as original linings In all grinding units except the rod mills at the Strathcona Concentrator. The operation of rubber liners and grates when sized mine ore was used as the grinding medium was satisfactory confirming the Hardy Concentrator experience. Problems developed when the grinding medium was changed from sized mine ore to steel balls in that blinding of the grates occurred. This resulted in conversion of the units to overflow type mills through removal of the grates. The lifter bar life was significantly increased by using higher lifter bars.Grinding PracticeOperation of a regrind pebble mill commenced in 1961 in the Hardy Concentrator. This operation demonstrated the economic feasibility of using sized mine ore as grinding medium. Problems caused by excessive wear of metal liners and grates combined with blinding of the grates were corrected in 1964 through installation of rubber liners and grates."

The coal measures of the South Wales coalfield contain at least 50 horizons at which coal seams are known, to occur. More than 300 samples of coal were collected from these coal measures and this paper outlines thefindings of an investigation of the pattern and distribution of 12 trace elements in South Wales coals. A comparison of trace element contents of the South Wales coals is made with trace element values found elsewhereand an attempt was made to establish the organic affinity of the elements in different seams and in the coalfield 'as a whole. An important function of such an analysis is to determine the order of abundance of trace elements and this was performed for individual seams and for the whole coalfield.The interrelationship of certain elements in some seams is also examined with a view to understanding the effectiveness of such an approach to seam correlation.Ranges of values are quoted together with the mean values of the various elements. Variations of elemental values within a seam section and over the coalfield as a whole are discussed.

Although lifetime estimates for sulfate reduction based on total substrate carbon typically range from 20 to 30 years, field and laboratory experiments showed that rates of sulfate reduction decreased over time as readily available organic material was consumed. When the rate of acid input exceeded the rate of sulfate reduction, alkalinity was removed from the substrate, pH decreased and metals increased. Output pH increased from 4 to over 6 after the system was shut down for several weeks and the rate of acid input was reduced. Successful long term treatment requires a design based on the input pH and the long-term organic decomposition rate.

"The seventh National Safety Competition, that for 1931, conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines, was participated in by 350 mines and quarries operating in 34 States. Tables 1 to 5 show the relative standing of the various plants, Bronze trophies, known as the ""Sentinels of Safety,"" which were provided by The Explosives Engineer magazine to be awarded annually by the Bureau of Mines were awarded to five companies, each company having established the best accident—prevention record within one of the five classes into which all companies were divided — namely, anthracite mining companies, bituminous—coal mining companies, metal—mining companies, operators of nonmetallic mineral mines other than coal mines, and quarries or open—cut mines. The trophies are awarded for one year and are then transferred to the winners of the succeeding year's contest.The outstanding feature of the contest of 1931 was the operation of a bituminous coal mine without a lost—time injury to any employee. While accident—tree records had previously been made by certain quarries, metal mines, and nonmetallic mineral mines, never before has such a feat been accomplished by a bituminous coal mine in the National Safety Competition. Whether or not such a record has been made by a bituminous—coal mining company not enrolled is the competition the writer does not know, but it is believed that the case referred to is unique among large coal—mining companies. The mine to which reference is made is No. 1 mine of the Phelps Dodge Corporation, at Dawson, N. Mex. To that company belongs the distinction not only of being the first coal—mining company among those enrolled in these yearly safety contents to operate its mine without an accident but also of occasioning the 'Sentinels of Safety' trophy for a bituminous mine to take its first journey west of the Mississippi River. For the past six years the trophy has been in West Virginia, Alabama, or Pennsylvania."

This paper discusses the prediction of subsidence over partial extraction systems in thick coal seams. A model based on empirical techniques using influence functions is developed to calculate the surface ground settlements above extraction panels. Independent of the influence function, two field parameters, the subsidence factor and the angle of draw (limit angle) are required to define the model. Both these parameters are best observed from critical or super critical subsidence areas. However in thick seams, extraction widths are typically sub critical and therefore it was necessary to refine an estimation process for sub critical conditions. Partial extraction systems in NZ are characterised by variability with respect to extraction thickness and depth. As extraction proceeds along a panel, conditions deteriorate once the critical span width is exceeded and therefore percentage extraction decreases. A further variable was introduced to the modelling which allows for varying extraction sequences. Two comparisons with field observations, one over a partial extraction panel, the other over abandoned workings, showed the method gave good agreement to measured subsidence values.

Por ello, el presente texto describe el método de “Hundimiento por Subniveles” (Sub Level Caving – SLC), como el más indicado. El SLC se basa en la utilización del flujo gravitacional del mineral fragmentado a través de la perforación, voladura, y el hundimiento de la roca estéril principalmente de la caja techo. El diseño del elipsoide de extracción determinará la ubicación de los Sub niveles y Drawpoints, los cuales serán críticos para hacer rentable el minado, de forma que los beneficios actuales del método indican niveles altos de Seguridad, recuperación alta de mineral, bajos costos y mejora constante de la productividad.

A systematic study of the mechanism of interaction of 218Po(RaA) armed by the decay of 222Rn with airborne particulate matter has been made. The rate of attachment of RaA to particles in the diameter range of 0.1 µm to 10.0 µm has been measured as a function of particle size, concentration, and composition, radon concentration, time of interaction, relative humidity and temperature. It was found that under the conditions in these experiments the attachment rate was proportional to the square of the particle diameter and varied with temperature and relative humidity. The composition of the particles apparently has no effect on the attachment. The variation in attachment rate was related to a sticking probability coefficient of approximately 0.02 that varies systematically with temperature and humidity. In addition, the rate of deposition of RaA on the wall of the attachment kinetics system was measured and also found to change with temperature and relative humidity.
