To gather additional field data from the western United States, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) installed an array of field instrumentation at a longwall coal mine in Central Utah. The purpose of this field site was to monitor ground movement and changes in pressure during mining where conditions include massive, stiff overburden and relatively deep cover. To accomplish this, field instrumentation was installed in the two-entry gate road between the fifth and sixth longwall panel in the current mining district.

Drive systems for mining machines are usually sized to accommodate anticipated peak loads. Usually, the average power requirements are considerably less. Energy storage and power averaging are attractive concepts for mining machinery and could have far-reaching implications. The purpose of this program was to: ? Identify truly feasible concepts, ? Identify advantages/disadvantages, limitations, and constraints, ? Evaluate feasibility based on today?s technology, ? Identify anticipated safety problems, and ? Provide the designer with a comprehensive literature base. Concepts evaluated include flywheels, high energy batteries, gas charged accumulators, inductive storage, capacitive storage, springs and counterweights, thermal, closed cycles, internal combustion engines, trolley systems, and hybrid systems. A comprehensive reference index is provided. Included is an appendix containing abstracts of the pertinent literature.

Ongoing mining of the East Ertsberg Skarn System orebody below the Gunung Bijih Timur and Intermediate Ore Zone caves has been relatively successful and a ramp up to 80 000 t/d was achieved in the Deep Ore Zone Mine. However, the distribution of production, the overall drawpoint availability as well as the rate of change of the cave back profile has not followed the anticipated path. Several key factors influencing cave growth and progress, grade variation, fragmentation, wet muck and surface subsidence have been recognised over the life-of-mine that now have to be taken into account for planning the later stages of mining.The paper will discuss the influence of geological controls of lithology and structure – how this as well as other contributing aspects have impacted ore flow, contributing to some of the widespread panel damage, and been a key factor in compacted draw columns and caused an accelerated appearance of water ingress. This in turn has rapidly changed the distribution of wet drawpoints requiring remote mucking and special controls that also affect the call from the remaining dry drawpoints. Comment is also made on the potential final cave profile if it continues along the current trend and some discussion is offered about possible mitigation measures if this were to come about.CITATION:Wilson, A D, Purba, A M and Sjadat, A, 2016. A pilot plant of the Modular Gold Processing Unit (MGPU) was designed, installed and operated, over a 8 months period, by RSW-Béroma, at the Granada Mine located near Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec. A description of the project geology, plant set up as well as exploitation results, including productivity and profitability curves, are given for a small scale mining operation in comparison with larger ones. T HE Mining Methods Committee held its initial meeting* on Tuesday afternoon, with F. W. Bradley in the chair and W. Y. Westervelt as vice- chairman. The first paper to be presented was "A Plea for a U. S. Court of Patent Appeals," for which Kenneth W. Greenawalt ably pleaded. The paper (which was published in full in last month's issue) is so carefully prepared that no synopsis can do it justice. It discusses the opposed views of some patent lawyers and other lawyers and members of the judiciary as, for example, Chief Justice Taft who is quoted as saying in 1921: "I think it is a great deal better to take a first class lawyer and a first-class judge and make him a good patent expert than it is to take a patent expert and try to make him a first-class lawyer and a good judge." Mr. Greenawalt argued the need for specialized scientific and engineering interest and understanding to enable a lawyer or judge to prepare or interpret patent specifications and decide the originality necessary for a valid invention. He proposed the special U. S. Court of Patent Appeals to also counteract the costly confusion and injustice now ruling where a patent may be declared valid in the courts of certain States and invalid by the courts of other States.

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes the development of a protective operator compartment for a new generation thin-seam mobile bridge carrier. The developed compartment is commercially available and is currently employed on approximately 15 bridge carriers used in the mining industry. The design of the compartment, which employed human factors engineering and small- and full-scale mockup models, is fully described. Details of the compartment's fabrication, evaluation, and demonstration in a commercial low-seam coal mine are also provided.

German manufacturer DBT signed a contract to supply a sixth automated-plow long-wall system to Shenyang Coal in Liaoning province in northeastern China. This most recent order occurred just weeks after DBT signed a contract to deliver a fifth automated-plow longwall system to Datong Coal in Shanxi province. The plow will go into service at Shenyang Coal’s Hongyang Mine. Mining conditions at the mine, coupled with DBT’s advanced automated-plow technology, means that the system has the potential to become one of the world’s most productive thin-seam longwalls.

A dump edge and vehicle proximity warning system is being developed at the Colorado School of Mines using GPS and wireless local area networks to improve the safety of off-highway trucks in open pit mines. After two years of research, software development, and testing in the laboratory, field tests are currently being carried out at operating limestone quarries and open pit mining operations to evaluate the effectiveness of the system under rugged operating conditions. This paper describes the progress made on this NIOSH-funded project and discuss, tests carried out recently, at the Morenci open pit copper mine in Arizona.

A mining system consists of many sub-systems such as drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, ventilation, hoisting and supporting. During mining operation, these sub-systems may experience various problems that stop the operation because of possible environmental equipment and safety issues. In order to ensure delivery contracts in the required quality and safe mining medium, the operation should be, at least, performed in the specified reliability level of the system. If the system reliability decreases below the specified level, there will be safety and financial losses for the mining company. Therefore, the mine should be maintained by a reconstruction procedure to guarantee the operation continuity. Given that each sub-system has a different reliability function and maintenance cost, the determination of reconstruction time will be a complicated decision making problem. In this paper, the determination of reconstruction time is formulated as a nonlinear optimization problem and solved by genetic algorithms (GA). A case study was conducted to demonstrate the performance of the approach for an underground operation. The results showed that the approach could be used to determine the best action time. For many years line-of-sight (LOS) issues for underground mobile equipment is a growing focus of research. This research is a result of the numerous fatalities and injuries which occur in the mining industry and which are related to poor operator LOS. Three assessment methods are currently used to assess operator LOS of underground mobile equipment. The light filament (LF) method is a hands-on assessment method that is performed in the field. This method is not evaluated in this paper. The laser scan (LS) method of assessing equipment is a quick and reliable method that comes from the need to evaluate vehicles already located in the field. The computer simulation (CS) method can assess LOS issues using a computer aided drawing (CAD) model, which is useful for assessing current or prototype models. The purpose of the current research is to compare and validate different operator LOS assessment methods. Comparison of the results of the LS and CS visibility plots yielded similar quantifiable results. A visual comparison of the results further illustrate that the LS and CS methods are acceptable assessment tools for mobile equipment operator LOS evaluation. The visibility assessment methods are now being prepared as guidelines for the mining industry to assess current and potential designs.

Phosphorus is a problematic impurity that has challenged steelmakers for decades. Steel producers have developed specific technologies to eliminate phosphorus prior to and during steelmaking. These process technologies reduce phosphorus to various degrees and increase the cost of making steel. The state-of-the art dephosphorization technologies are described and operating costs compared for each of the established technologies. Costs are discussed in terms of price penalties for high P iron ore and selling premiums for low P steel. From this, strategies to control P in a cost effective manner are described.

A eficiência energética na indústria vem ganhado destaque no contexto atual. Um dos grandes desafios da atualidade é de utilizar os vários milhares de medidas de processos industriais coletadas, armazenadas e, utilizadas como indicadores capazes de contribuirem para a melhoria da eficiência energética. O princípio é combinar métodos analíticos avançados e aprendizagem de máquina aliado a um forte envolvimento dos membros da equipe da usina para se instalar um Sistema de Gestão de Energia (EnMS) em conformidade com a ISO50001. O objetivo seria de proporcionar a usina economias significativas em termos de consumo de energia. Este trabalho resume as etapas críticas para a implementação do EnMS para processos complexos: dignosticar a variabiliade do consumo de energia, identificar uma proposta viável para consumo de energia, envolver todos os níveis de produção nos workshops de análise de causas, implementar modelos preditivos de monitoramento em tempo real, dar o suporte para a tomada de decisões e, fazer modelos de relatórios de desempenho. Um exemplo com uma indústria química será apresentado e demonstrará como a metodologia pode ser aplicada na otimização das áreas de produção e de distribuição de vapor através de da melhoria da gestão operacional. A experiência adquirida para esse caso enfatiza a importância em potencializar a utilização dos dados de monitoramento e, o envolvimento dos operadores para poder entender as práticas operacionais principais, promovendo por conseguinte, uma cultura de eficiência energética.

The East Bay Municipal Utility District is undertaking seismic upgrades of the Claremont Tunnel in the San Francisco Bay area. The tunnel carries treated water across the active Hayward Fault to supply a major metropolitan area. Studies indicate the tunnel could be severed by fault offset during a major seismic event. A design approach to achieve limited operation of the tunnel following fault displacement has been established and design details are currently being evaluated. This paper describes the project, the design approach, and summarizes significant construction constraints.

A tecnologia da Prensa de Rolos se encontra cada vez mais presente em circuitos de cominuição na indústria mineral. No caso de minérios de ferro itabiríticos, essa tecnologia está sendo aplicada de forma pioneira no projeto Minas-Rio, atualmente em fase de ramp-up. O trabalho compara o desempenho das Prensas de Rolos do circuito Minas-Rio sob diferentes condições de operação em relação às previsões obtidas pelos três principais modelos matemáticos disponíveis na literatura: Morrell / Lim / Shi / Tondo (1997), Torres & Casali (2009) e Dundar et al. (2013). A comparação foi realizada considerando o ajuste dos modelos a um caso base, sendo os demais testes simulados a partir dos parâmetros ajustados para esse. A comparação entre os modelos foi realizada com base nas previsões de potência consumida, capacidade e distribuição granulométrica do produto. Em geral, foram obtidas boas previsões da distribuição granulométrica do produto com os diferentes modelos, embora o modelo de Morrell / Lim / Shi / Tondo tenha superestimado a finura do produto em alguns dos testes. Além disso, foi observada uma boa correspondência entre a potência experimental e a simulada para os três modelos na maioria dos testes industriais. Entretanto, a capacidade prevista pelos modelos de Morrell / Lim / Shi / Tondo e Torres & Casali foi subestimada em todos os casos em relação aos valores experimentais.

Frequently materials handling operations are compromised by transfer chute problems ranging from high wear rates, blockages and ineffective loading of the downstream conveyor. This paper will present the design flow implemented to overcome problems in two case studies utilising discrete element modelling incorporating material characterisation.Material testing is relevant in achieving a valid discrete element method (DEM) simulation model and subsequently a valuable design tool for transfer chute assessment and design. It is well recognised that in the current growth and demand for mineral resources, leading to ever increasing conveyor capacities associated with export terminals and mineral processing facilities that transfer chutes are a key focus point. The successful performance of the transfer chute is also dependent on operating with a ærobust rangeÆ of material flowability and handling characteristics. This requirement is crucial in accommodating mineral ores from developing resources, which are often more friable and stickier than in past decades.This paper will include details of chute installations associated with iron ore and coking coal, from the DEM simulations through to the performance of the installed and commissioned plant.CITATION:Moore, B A, van der Merwe, S and van Aarde, N, 2013. During the last five years there have been significant improvements in face support monitoring techniques particularly in respect of face pressure. The measurement of support loading pressures was originally conceived as a maintenance aid for the hydraulic systems but recent work has also included geological loading displays of the complete face as well as individual supports. This paper briefly examines the means of obtaining this information, together with some examples of actual face data. Also included is a summary of the benefits of such monitoring and an outline of future development work.
