The paper relates to the laboratory and pilot plant studies that have been carried out by Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd., Metallurgical Research Div., in developing the ammonia pressure leach process for extracting Cu, Ni, Co, and S from high grade Ni concentrate produced from Lynn Lake ores and describes in some detail the chemistry of the process. In the leaching stage air, ammonia, and sulphide minerals react in a sequence of inter-related steps to produce soluble amines of Ni, Cu, and Co in a solution containing sulphate, thiosulphate, polythionate, and sulphamate ions and a controlled amount of free ammonia, the iron and other components of the concentrate remaining as an insoluble residue which is separated from the leach solution by filtration. The pregnant solution produced in leaching is further treated by boiling to precipitate and remove Cu as cuprous sulphide, leaving a copper-free solution with a composition suitable for subsequent precipitation of Ni and Cu by H,

"Falconbridge’s Raglan Concentrator, located at the northern limit of Quebec’s Nunavik Region, has been in operation since December 1997. Originally designed to process 800,000 tonnes per year of high grade nickel ore, plant capacity is currently approaching 1,000,000 tonnes per year. Optimization of the ABC grinding circuit has proven to be the most challenging component of this capacity increase. Concurrent flotation circuit modifications have allowed concentrate grades to increase from 16 to 18 percent nickel, while maintaining recoveries. Concentrate drying problems encountered during the first 15 months of operation have been addressed through equipment upgrades. The challenges associated with surface deposition of filtered tailings in an arctic environment are now better understood, and detailed design of the progressive reclamation cover is underway.GRINDINGCircuit OverviewOre from open pit and underground mining operations is introduced to the underground ore handling system via surface and underground truck dumps. Two underground bins with a combined capacity of 4000 tonnes provide roughly a day of live capacity for ore storage. Ore from the two bins is conveyed to a 150 tonne surge bin immediately ahead of the grinding circuit in the concentrator.The Raglan grinding circuit has a conventional ABC configuration (Figure 1) with a design capacity of 100 mtph (800,000 tonnes per year). The 24’ AG mill is powered by a 3000 hp motor with variable speed drive. AG discharge is sized on a 8’x16’ single deck vibrating screen, with screen oversize recirculating to a 5 %’ short head cone crusher (400 hp) before returning to the AG mill. Screen undersize is combined with ball mill discharge to feed up to 5 15” Krebs hydrocyclones. The ball mill is a 14’x 21’ overflow mill driven by a 3000 hp motor at 73% critical speed. Target Pgo for the grinding circuit product is 65 microns"

Lacy copper has been an on-going concern at Atlantic Copper for at least 10 years and was first reported to Glencore Technology in mid-2010. Over the past 12 years, many of the plates were replaced due to age and general deterioration however; plate passivation and lacy copper issues have persisted. After analyzing all the possible causes of this phenomena, it was found that the problem is caused by a degradation of stainless steel as a consequence of the deposition of Sb oxides. These deposits act as passivating agents of stainless steel, which reduces the density of copper nuclei, causing defective copper deposit, with low thickness and ductility. After doing several tests for reducing/removing the phenomena, the over-riding factor was found to be the anode-cathode overlap. An adequate overlap eliminates the problem of "lacy copper". This was verified during an eight month trial with anodes extended 2.5cm in length. Longer anode not only avoids the appearance of lacy copper, but also recovers cathodes that already have lacy copper. On the other hand polishing of plates only gives rise to a temporary solution that requires on-going polishing, to avoid the re-appearance of lacy copper. INTRODUCTION The electrolytic copper refinery of Atlantic Copper in Huelva (Spain) was commissioned in 1970 with an initial capacity of 40,000 t of cathodes per year. In 1975 the copper refinery was expanded to 108,000 t/year. From 1994 to 1996, a new expansion together with the implementation of ISA permanent cathode technology led to a capacity of 215,000 t/y. Since 1995, a progressive increase in the current density up to 350 A/m2 has been accomplished, which together with an increase in the number of cells from 1,120 to 1,204, has led to the present cathode production capacity of 290,000 t/y A lack of copper deposition in the lower part of the steel permanent cathodes was first reported in 2010. This phenomenon is known as “Lacy copper” because of the appearance of the copper deposit as it can be seen in Figure 1. The occurrence of this phenomena was relatively low and was assumed to be originated by an excessive anode scrapping. Nevertheless, in December 2015 Lacy Copper was observed in a significant amount of copper cathodes giving rise to the following issues: Increased tramp copper – housekeeping and maintenance problems Poor appearance of cathode deposit and untidy looking bundles

In 2004, management at Unimin’s Gleason, TN operation began implementing ergonomic interventions specifically targeted to reduce risk of musculoskeletal injuries (MSIs). Together with corporate and site management, Unimin identified work site hazards and began to modify work practices/equipment. Some interventions were relatively simple and were implemented immediately. Others, like improvements to a mobile shredder, were more complex but were eventually resolved through a participatory approach with employees, management, manufacturers and NIOSH. This paper discusses ergonomic interventions that were successfully implemented using a bottom-up approach to reducing the risk of injury.

Syntheses of Al-TiC-Al2O3 and Al-SiC-Al2O3 composites were obtained in situ by carbothermal reduction of mixtures of Al powder, TiO2 powder and activated carbon powders and Al powder, SiO2 powder and activated carbon powders. The reductions were carried out in a horizontal tube furnace under flow of inert gas. The standard Gibbs energy minimization method was used to calculate the equilibrium composition of the reacting species. The synthesized products were mixtures of aluminum reinforce with titanium carbide and alumina and aluminum reinforce with silicon carbide and alumina. The effect of the reaction temperature (1000 o C ? 1200 o C) and condition of precursors on the Al powder, TiO2 powder and activated carbon powders and Al powder, SiO2 powder and activated carbon powders were investigated using XRD and SEM method. The synthesized products showed those composites with aluminum matrix and titanium carbide and alumina as reinforced phases and aluminum matrix and silicon carbide and alumina as a reinforced phase was formed.

THE purpose of this paper is a comparison, based on genesis, of the ore deposits associated with the igneous rocks of the central Montana Rockies. Considered separately, without attention to their origin, the orebodies appear to be distributed haphazard, with no fundamental laws controlling their position and character. It is believed, however, that if all the factors be weighed, this apparent confusion will to a large degree disappear. The, first essential to such a comparison is detailed knowledge of the individual mines, as to their geographic position (see Fig. 1), their mineralogical character, and in particular the derivation of their ores.1 The authors of this paper have pursued such an investigation for the past 6 years, and have accumulated a mass of evidence that enables a preliminary correlation to be attempted. Knowledge acquired from this research contributes to a better understanding of the physical structure of Green River oil shale and provides fundamental data and concepts that may serve to improve oil-shale technology. This study by the Bureau of Mines indicates that oil shale is a highly consolidated organic-inorganic system with no significant micropore structure, pore volume, or internal surface. This system is a form of physical structure that precludes rapid diffusion of either gases or liquids. The mineral matter consists essentially of nonspherical particles that tend to follow a log-normal size distribution. An excess of 99 weight-percent of these particles have equivalent spherical diameters of less than 44 microns--75 weight-percent are from 2 to 20 microns, and 15 weight-percent are less than 2 microns. The surface area (3 to 5 square meters per gram) of these mineral constituents is mainly external surface. The mineral constituents contain some micropore structure--pore radii ranging from 10 to 100 Angstrom--with the pore sizes randomly distributed. Distribution of the organic matter within the inorganic matrix is essentially interparticle and not intraparticle. The organic matter within the micropores of the mineral constituents is less than 4 percent of the total. Estimates made from surface area data suggest that perhaps only a small amount of the organic matter is bonded either physically or chemically to the mineral constituents.

Mining is increasingly occurring near or below the water table. This has led to a higher rate of handling problems associated with increased moisture and increased adhesion, which lead to a higher rate of blockage events within the materials handling chain. Typically, these ores and minerals are known as ‘wet and sticky materials’.Currently there is very limited knowledge and/or methodologies for effective design of efficient materials handling systems when it comes to handling wet and sticky materials. However, there is one major parameter that significantly affects handleability of a wet and sticky ore; namely, its moisture content. Flow property testing has shown that when moisture is reduced, the adhesive properties of the ore are also significantly reduced, thereby increasing ore flowability.The research embodied in this paper investigates the moisture reduction rate through a loose packed bed of iron ore using dry, ambient temperature airflow. A comparison of the predictive capabilities of a proposed drying model to data obtained from on-site experiments using iron ore fines is made. Building on an assumption made by Hukill (1954), a second term has been proposed to account for rewetting effects in the drying process. Management of solid mine wastes, particularly waste rock, requires careful planning to reduce the likelihood of sulfide oxidation, and generation of acid rock drainage (ARD). Waste management strategies must focus on obtaining a thorough understanding of the environmental characteristics of future waste rock materials. In this study, a waste management strategy for characterising underground waste rock was developed at a polymetallic underground mine in western Tasmania to determine which materials were appropriate for surficial placement. The criteria for surficial placement set by the regulator were that materials had to be non-acid forming and non-metalliferous. A range of cost-effective field-based tools, mineralogical assessments and mineral chemistry techniques were used on a suite of representative drill core material to determine an appropriate waste management strategy. Ultimately, a modified geochemistry–mineralogy–texture–geometallurgy (GMTG) approach was designed, whereby geoenvironmental focused logging and simple prescreening tools such as paste pH and sulfur analyses were used at stage-one; routine acid base accounting and leachate tests at stage-two; and validation tools including X-ray diffractometry and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICPMS) at stage-three. This approach should be considered for other mine sites at early and operational life-of-mine stages with similar deposit characteristics, to ensure correct screening and placement of potentially hazardous waste materials in suitable above-ground waste repositories or mined-out mine sections.CITATION:Parbhakar-Fox, A and Lottermoser, B G, 2017. Seven pairs of drop and ventilation shafts, between two and nine feet in diameter, will convey combined sewer flow to a 230-foot-deep, 26-foot diameter storage tunnel. This paper will present case histories for each site. Discussion will include functional requirements, program and site access constraints, structural design, geology, the variety of excavation and lining construction methods used, and lessons learned. Noteworthy observations include the importance of assuring competent ground sup-port at the soil-bedrock interface and of achieving tight verticality tolerance using both top-down and raise bore excavation methods.

Many hydraulic backfills are deposited at low density and provide less than optimum support strength to stope walls. This laboratory study shove that fill strength can be considerably increased. Placement methods used to increase the fill strength were the head, vibratory, cementation, double-planed (dblplod), and combinations of these methods. An experimental facility van designed to study the placement cathode and resultant strengths of the fills. Physical property tests made on the fills included laboratory penetration and vane shear plus several supplementary tests, such as grain size distribution and relative density. Test results were compared to fills planed by conventional methods and to those results reported by other investigators. When compared to fills placed by conventional methods, the penetration modulus was increased by 4.3 tines when the uncemented-vibrated-head concept was used and 71 times when the cemented-vibrated-head-dblplod concept was used. Apparently, hydraulically fill strength can be substantially increased. Conceptual mining plans are also included on suggested ways of placing and using high-modulus backfills.

Diamond-drill blasthole sloping has now been used for a long enough time to permit us to discuss fairly its problems from the ore-breaking angle and to attempt to peer into its future. To do this we have gathered information from many properties through questionnaires. The operators have indicated fairly well in their answers what they think of the method. The many variations of methods have by now been fairly well developed, and performance rates and. mining costs are well established at each property. All this can be laid down on paper with fair completeness. Now. knowing all this, what will the future of the method be? To attempt to look into the future of a mining method immediately brings to light many problems and variables. For instance: why were diamond drills used in the first place? What has the cost trend been? In what type of deposit has the method proved most advantageous? What will the future cost of diamonds be? What are the possible substitutes?

In recent years, suction piles and suction anchors have been used as underwater foundations for various offshore structures. They have been proven very versatile, effective, and environmentally friendly. This paper describes the load resisting mechanism, installation, and design of suction piles and suction anchors. Also included are brief descriptions of three offshore structures that have recently been constructed using suction piles and suction anchors. They include: a new breakwater system utilizing gravity-type concrete caisson superstructure on top of concrete suction piles; a floating breakwater system utilizing embedded suction anchors; and a foundation system utilizing suction piles for temporary mooring of underwater tunnel elements.

The Functional Performance Equation for Ball Milling” was first presented in 1988. It now has been used successfully in more than a dozen mineral processing plants. This powerful, yet simple tool provides a new level of understanding of closed circuit grinding. It shows how grinding circuit efficiency is in reality comprised of two distinct efficiencies. It demonstrates how circuit production rate is related, collectively, to these two efficiencies, mill energy input, and the grindability of the ore. It links circuit performance to design and operating variables that can be manipulated, and creates an effective strategy for making plant improvements. This paper covers the derivation and industrial validation of this equation. As part of an engineering and management system that also incorporates suitable metrics and process control, other operators can now use this tool to make improvements and to manage the performance of their grinding operations with clarity and confidence.

Work to improve employees' behavior in Głogów Copper Smelter began in 2009. It has been noted that over 90% of accidents at work are attributable to human reasons. At that time, a series of external workshops was contracted based on exercises conducted by a psychologist trainer with supervisors. Having trained about 300 employees, an observation of employee behavior at workstations was started as part of the control of risk reduction measures. As a result of the above actions, the number of accidents was reduced by half between 2009 and 2017. Currently, internal workshops for communication improvement for behavioral auditors are conducted by the employees of the Smelter. Named: "I observe, react and communicate" and aimed at further mastering the elements of the safety culture in Głogów Copper Smelter. INTRODUCTION KGHM Polska Miedz is an integrated mining and smelting copper producer based in Poland and operates on the international metal market. KGHM, with annual production of over 500 thousand tonnes of copper, holds a middle position in the world ranking of copper producers. At the same time, in Europe it is the largest producer of copper from its own ore deposits, possessing its own integrated production structure, from underground mining operations to final, top-quality product. It is also worth mentioning that KGHM Polska Miedź is one of the largest Polish exporters and, apart from copper, is a significant primary silver producer in the world. Elandsrand started shotcreting back in 1991. This paper will share the experiences of the mine by looking into the past, the present situation and the way Elandsrand plans to approach the future. It looks at the application of drycrete and discusses the factors that led to the introduction of wet fibre reinforced shotcrete. The logistical constraints of getting shotcrete material underground will be solved by the development of an underground batch plant, using run of mine waste rock as an aggregate.

"Wireless communication in the mineral processing environment is not as simple as it is in the home or office environment. The correct design of a wireless network in the mineral processing environment can offer a more flexible and lower cost installation than the transitional fiber networks. However with the flexibility of a wireless solution, also comes some limitations. By reviewing the plant requirements along with weighting the wireless benefits and limitations it is possible to design a network that combines the robustness of a wired solution with the mobility of a wireless solution. This paper addresses some wireless design considerations and it looks at some real life examples in the following areas: •,Meshed wireless network for high levels of redundancy •,Wireless instruments (such as HART, Modbus and others) •,Portable devices for mobile operators •,Network monitoring for plant personnel (it’s no longer just for IT people) INTRODUCTION Typical networks used in the mineral processing environment consist of a fiber network infrastructure with industrial switches used to connect the network devices. These fiber networks can be redundant or put into a ring topologies to offer a higher level of availability. Fiber networks have the benefits of: •,Immunity to noise from power and grounding issues •,Ability to span long distances (2km for multimode fiber and 20km for single mode fiber) •,Maintainable “off-the-shelf” technology Fiber networks however have some drawbacks, such as: •,Relativity high initial installation cost for cable trays, poles, trenches and pulling and termination of cable. •,Fixed geographic topology, adding future fiber drops may be challenging and expensive. •,Mobile users are not considered. Integrating a wireless network with a fiber network can offer the best of two worlds, a reliable high speed backbone for mission critical activities and a wireless network for remote applications and mobile users."

A adição de Fe-Nb em ligas com alto teor de carbono apresenta baixas taxas de dissolução devido à formação de uma camada carburada na superfície, exigindo longos tempos para dissolução dos carbonetos NbC no banho. Foi avaliada a eficiência da dissolução de Fe-Nb em pó pelo processo de simples adição em uma liga de Ferro Fundido Branco com Alto Teor de Cromo. No processo foram obtidas eficiências de dissolução em torno de 90% e os carbonetos NbC apresentaram em formas finas e em aglomerados.

ACCIDENT prevention as we know and understand it today is of comparatively recent origin. As a matter of fact, the Industrial Accident Prevention Association of Ontario, which is the oldest organization of its kind in the Dominion, celebrated its thirtieth anniversary only this year. On the other hand, one could say that the history of accident prevention is almost the history of mankind itself. In a general sense, every forward step that man has made throughout the centuries has been largely due to two things: (1) a desire for increased comfort, and (2) the need for safety; and, always, the need for safety has taken precedence over the desire for comfort. While it is true that hundreds of volumes have been published, dealing with the many aspects of accident prevention work, you cannot go to a library and pick out a book that has all the answers in it. Such a book has never been published-we are still looking for some of the answers. However, a good deal of real progress has been made.
