Increased TBM performance is leading the way for resurgence in tunneling activity in NYC. Tunnels will be excavated in the same geologic formations as previously excavated D&B tunnels whose construction records are providing valuable insight into the prediction of rock mass behavior. This report compares an eight mile stretch of NYC Water Tunnel #2 with the recently excavated eleven mile stretch of the TBM driven Water Tunnel #3. Comparisons of the type and amount of rock support installed as well as water inflows and grout quantities are made. Rock mass characteristics specific to TBM performance are also evaluated.

"The United States Bureau of Mines, in the interest of the prevention of injuries and fatalities in coal mines, has engaged in a study of the circumstances and conditions under which falls of roof and coal contribute to coal-mine accidents, and this publication is devoted to the result of a study conducted in mince developed in the Pittsburgh or No. 8 coal in eastern Ohio.To emphasize the need of this study a statement of the fatalities which have resulted from falls of roof is presented, followed by a brief description of the field and its geology. The mining methods, regulations, and timbering practices are presented and discuss, as well as supervision and discipline, all of which are important factors in the control of the roof and the prevention of falls of roof material that are liable to result in injury to the underground workmen.During the five-year period, 1924 to 1928, there were 10,820 fatalities in the cool mines of the United States, of which number 5,573 or 51.5 per cent resulted from fells of roof material, such as draw slate or roof coal, and of coal from the fact or sides. These fatalities generally occur singly, consequently they are given little publicity compared with major disasters consulting from explosions which, during the same five-year period, amounted to only 17.8 per cent of the total fatalities.Seven,mines in eastern Ohio, each typical, of mines in its locality, have been carefully studied, and the result of this study is herein presented so the information may be and beneficial to all who may be operating mines having,similar natural or physical conditions.In general, it will be found that measures taken to prevent injuries or fatalities from falls of roof as well as other safety measures, will have the effect of increasing the efficiency and economy in mining operation. The result of the study so far made on the falls of roof problem indicates that such features as mine management, supervision, inspection, discipline, character of roof, timbering methods, and blasting have a direct bearing on any scheme that may be evolved to prevent injury or loss of life by falls of roof."

This report presents experimental data on crater formation in four rock types. From an analysis of these data a general theory of rock breakage by explosives is deduced. This theory accounts for most of the rock breakage and other phenomena that occur when a concentrated charge is detonated in a drill hole near a free surface. From instrumented crater tests and high-speed motion pictures of the explosions, various experimental checks on the deduced theory of rock breakage are made. The general mechanism of rock breakage by explosives as described in this report is outlined briefly below. The detonation of the explosive charge creates a high gas pressure in the charge hole, which in turn generates a compressive strain pulse in the surrounding rock. This compressive strain pulse travels outward in all directions from the charge hole. Near the charge hole the amplitude of this strain pulse is sufficient to cause crushing of the rock. However, as the strain pulse travels outward its amplitude decays rapidly until no further crushing of the rock is possible. The compressive strain pulse continues to travel outward until it is reflected by a free surface. Upon reflection the compressive strain pulse becomes a tensile strain pulse. As the strength of rock in tension is much less than in compression, the reflected tensile strain pulse is able to break the rock in tension, progressing from the free surface back toward the shot point. In other words, the rock is pulled apart, not pushed apart.

Greater use should be made of lineations in investigations of the engineering properties of rock masses and in structural studies guiding prospecting programmes.A prominent alignment of elongate mineral grains and stretched pebbles usually marks the primary direction in which metamorphic rocks have been extended by flow. In local adjustment zones separating masses that have extended different amounts, this lineation has been a direction of slip. Kinks and crumples resulting from this slip lie in secondary lineation directions transverse to the primary mineral lineation.During deformation relatively mobile materials move into dilatant zones caused by irregularities in primary flow directions. This secondary movement transverse to lineated, primary-flow directions is the cause of crenulations and folds with axes parallel to flow lineations.INTRODUCTIONThe arrangement of inequidimensional particles in rocks is rarely statistically random. Platy minerals tend to be parallel to bedding and foliation planes. Elongate particles and linear structures lie most frequently in certain lineation directions. The types of elongate particles in lineated rocks include needle and blade shaped mineral grains, sheared out segregations, and stretched pebbles, amygdules, and aolites.Crenulations and kinks are the most common of the linear structures involved.Faint lineations are readily overlooked. Even strong lineations have been ignored. Magnesia ramming materials have been widely used in China instead of magnesia bricks as furnace lining materials of ferroalloy refining furnace. The paper introduces the development of the ramming material, recounts its chemical composition, physical property and application characteristics. Because of its high MgO contents and fine sintering property, the ramming furnace bottom has the properties of good refractory, monolithic construction and thermal shock resistance. The changes in mineral composition and furnace tearout characterization show the reasons for the bottom?s long service life. The obvious benefits are widely achieved, the annual saving cost in refractory is about 2 millions US dollars.

There is a lack of information concerning the movements of water on the continental shelf, particularly with regard to data obtained regularly over significant periods of time. The Horace Lamb Centre for Oceanographic Research has recently deployed data acquisition systems on the sea bed off the coast of South Australia to record tides, swell, and ocean temperatures. Some of these early records are described. The swell data are pertinent to future offshore operations with drilling rigs, barges, and other equipment, while the temperature variations give evidence of significant bottom currents, apart from those due to swell.

Under contract from U. S. Bureau of Mines, Harza Engineering Company in cooperation with Eastern Associated Coal Corporation, conducted a ground control study of two mechanized longwall panels at the Federal Number 2 Mine. The mine is located in Northern West Virginia, and the coal is mined from the Pittsburgh Coal Seam. The prime objective of the study was to collect data which will aid in the proper selection of the longwall supports system and to control the entry caving problem. Instruments installed in the mine were borehole pressure cells, convergence recorders, roof sag recorders, horizontal roof strain indicators, differential floor movement systems, and lateral roof and floor movement systems. Instruments installed on the surface, above the instrumented longwall panels, consisted of slope indicator system, vertical bed settlement probe system and shear displacement detecting system. A comprehensive surface subsidence study was conducted in conjunction with the instrumentation. In addition to the instrumentation and monitoring, special tests were conducted to determine the bearing capacity of the roof and floor rocks, in situ modulus of coal, roof and floor rocks, and response of borehole pressure cells to ground stress. Cores of coal measure rocks were collected for the physical property tests. Face observations were made to detect various roof behavior parameters under the different jack setting pressures. This report essentially describes the instrumentation work, special tests and presents the data collected.

We present a novel hybrid algorithm for quantifying the ore grade variability that has central importance in ore reserve estimation. The proposed algorithm has three stages: (1) fuzzy clustering, (2) similarity measure, and (3) grade estimation. The method first considers data clustering, and then uses the clustering information for quantifying the ore grades by means of a cumulative point semimadogram function. The method provides a measure of similarity and gives an indication of the regional heterogeneity. In addition, grade estimations can be obtained at different levels of similarity using a weighting function, which is the standard regional dependence function (SRDF). This circular describes the activities and publications of the Bureau of Mines, Explosives Research Laboratory4 for the fiscal year 1960 (July 1, 1959 -June 30, 1960). Part 1 describes briefly the principal projects that were active during the report period, and presents some data not scheduled for publication elsewhere in the near future. Certain of the results are only preliminary and should be regarded as tentative, pending the findings of the completed investigation. Publications that appeared during the report period are listed and described briefly in part 2. In general, the research activities reported in these publications antedate fiscal year 1960. The published material relating to activities that are still current is indicated by references in part 1.

The field tests involved ten coal mines in which transients were initiated on the dc system from which the parameters of the dc mine electrical power system could be determined. The data processing involved the use of a Fourier Analyzer to filter noise and fit an exponential curve to the field waveforms. From this data analysis it was possible to find the dc system resistance, inductance and time constant. The survey of nationally recognized laboratories was conducted to establish that the recommended test criteria were practical. The development of test criteria for dc fuses used in mines was based on the measurement of parameters in the field, the survey of testing laboratories, literature searches, laboratory test, etc. A computer program was written to analytically predict the parameters measured in the field. This approach has limitations but reasonable agreement with field results was obtained. A brief laboratory testing program was carried out to verify the practicality of the recommended criteria and establish the accuracy of the conclusions concerning dc fuse performance.

Only recently has the term Induced Polarization found its way into geophysical literature. Schlumberger first mentioned the possible use of the induced polarization effect in one of his early papers. Later, induced polarization was the subject of several university theses, such as Seigel's at the University of Toronto and Bliel's at the Michigan School of Technology. In addition, a group at the New Mexico School of Mining and Technobgy has done work on induced polarization. There is very little to be found in print on the subject of induced polarization. Several papers have been presented at meetings, the 1958 AIME and SEG* conventions, for instance, on laboratory measurements of the effect and theoretical considerations useful in the interpretation of field results. This paper is the first attempt to present actual field results which show the usefulness of induced polarization as a prospecting technique. There are several phenomena that can cause polarization when electrical current is passed through the ground. In a paper presented at the 1958 SEG* meetings Professor T. R. Madden of M. I. T. demonstrated that only two of these gave rise to appreciable effects. The first is a result of the membrane and diffusion effects in a sandstone that contains appre- ciable amounts of clay minerals. The unbonded charges associated with the clay mineral forma material that passes positive and negative ions with different mobilities. When current is passed through such a system for some period of time, polarization results. The second phenomenon, which gives rise to very much larger polarization effects, is the one used in the new prospecting technique. These effects are a result of the blocking action or polarization of metallic or electronic conductors in a medium of ionic solution conduction. This electrochemical polarization, called "the over-voltage effect" by electro-chemists, occurs whenever electrical current is passed through a volume of rock which contains metallic minerals such as base metal sulphides. This polarization at metallic interfaces in ionic solutions depends upon the chemical energies necessary to allow the ions to continue the flow of current by giving up or receiving an electron from the metallic surfaces. The energy stored in this reaction isanalogous to that stored when a condenser is charged. If a d. c. current flowing through such a system is interrupted, the polarization can be detected as a small, decaying current that flows after the applied current is discontinued. The decaying potential measured is a result of the current flow caused by charges returning to their equilibrium positions from the positions they assumed under the applied potential field. Two-phase (water and air) flow in a self aerated WEMCO flotation machine has been investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). A 0.8 m3 model is considered. The flow is modeled by Euler-Euler approach, and transport equations are solved using a commercial software ANSYS-CFX5 [1]. Because of the lack of circumferential periodicity in this machine, the entire machine is modeled and unsteady simulations are conducted in the whole volume of the bulb. Uniform bubble diameter is specified, and the effects of bubble diameter are determined by conducting simulations for three diameters of 0.5, 0.7, and 1.0 mm. The unsteady air flow rate through the machine is predicted as an outcome of the simulations. Air volume fraction contours and velocity field in different parts of the machine are presented and discussed.

A single compartment 100 A electrolytic cell charged with AICla-KCl-NaCl at 750°C was studied during an experimental campaign of 4 months. About 10 1b of aluminium were produced in continuous runs which lasted up to 1 week. The highest cathode current efficiency determined was 80 per cent. Anode current efficiency. cathode potential, analyses of melt, sublimate, and product, and reactivity of cell materials were also recorded and interpreted in terms of the role of lower valent aluminium species in the electrolysis mechanism.

Fluidized bed roasting of copper concentrates from Mt. Morgan, Mt. Lyell, Mt. Isa, and Peko was performed in a 3 ft 6 in diameter, slurry fed, pilot plant roaster operated under autogenous conditions to produce calcines with desirable leaching properties. A 12 in. diameter, externally heated roaster, provided with a dry feed system, was also used.An account is given of important factors which influence roaster behaviour and performance, and the effects of operating variables on calcine composition and leaching properties are described. Due to copper ferrite formation, a maximum of approximately 50 per cent of the copper in the calcines may be in the form of CuO before the copper leach efficiency falls significantly below lOO' per cent. Recovery of gold by cyanidation of leach residues was consistently high and independent of roasting conditions.INTRODUCTIONIn traditional practice copper is produced by pyrometallurgical techniques when the ,copper minerals in the ore or concentrate are predominantly sulphides, and by hydrometallurgy when the minerals are oxidized. Copper smelting is most suited to large scale operations, and for many years small to medium size mines with sulphide orebodies have been interested ill; alternative processes.Since hydrometallurgical plants (ie. leaching and electrowinning plants) are essentially unitized, they may be scaled down in output without much loss in efficiency or increase in processing cost, and many proposals have been made for the application of this type of process following roasting of the sulphides to render the copper soluble. However, until the advent of fluidized roasting, it was not possible to control the roasting operations sufficiently precisely to produce calcines consistently of the required leaching characteristics.

The twenty-fourth of a series of semiannual surveys pertaining to motor gasoline marketed in the United States was made by the Bureau of Mines in August, 1931, The first part of a report giving the results of that survey as they pertain to specification data is given in this paper. A companion report, Part II, is in preparation and will discuss the results off other determinations made on the samples, including octane number ratings on the individual samples (to be made by the Bureau of Standards) and results of the determination of gravity, color, doctor test, and "gum" content by the copper dish method and the Bureau of Mines steam-oven method. Provide an unobstructive means of measuring small changes in distance from roof to floor or from rib to rib of a mine opening and the rate of closure in order to help operators of under-ground mines detect hazardous ground conditions. Approach A small ultrasonic measurement system was developed to detect g round movement and define closure rates. How the System Works The system contains two parts: a transducer and a readout device. The small ultrasonic transducer, similar to an audio speaker diaphram, is plucked with an ultrasonic frequency every six seconds. This frequency wave is sent through the air and reflected back to the transducer off any surface at which the transducer is pointed. The amount of time needed by the ultrasonic wave to make this round trip is accurately measured using a precise oscillator / timer and is converted into a measure of distance. The accurate 6-second time interval is used to convert any subsequent changes in the reading to a rate of change in feet per minute. Two readings are then displayed alternately on the readout instrument.
