O trabalho estabelece um modelo para melhorar a gestão de sobressalentes na ArcelorMittal Tubarão incluindo a correta identificação dos sobressalentes críticos, a priorização desses sobressalentes com foco no que deve ser comprado imediatamente e o que podemos postergar, a reclassificação dos sobressalentes de manutenção quanto a sua criticidade e à criação de alternativas para gerenciar e manter nos estoques os sobressalentes realmente críticos e dispor/criar alternativas para os sobressalentes não críticos. Essa nova metodologia foi aplicada como piloto na Linha de Acabamento e Linha de Tesoura da ArcelorMittal Tubarão indicando ganhos expressivos.

WHAT IS AI? It's very hard to say. Most researchers and practitioners disagree with nearly any attempted definition, but most would agree that A1 does deal with the development of computer-related methods o f problem-solving. Artificial intelligence is a discipline which seeks to emulate human anatomy and/or thought processes by applying computer science, electronics, and mechanical engineering to the development of natural language processing, machine vision, robotics, and knowledge-based expert systems. Integration of these four fields will someday produce the robots of today's science fiction. A1 addresses problems of structuring large amounts of knowledge and representing relationships with rules and semantic frameworks rather than with mathematical equations. A1 is convergent rather than divergent - - conventional conputer applications use relatively small quantities of input to generate large output, but A1 generally reduces large amounts of information to establish a few major conclusions. The development of A1 has prompted greatly increased efforts on the part of scientists and engineers to understand just how humans think, organize information, approach problem-solving, and form conclusions. Some of the more exciting and possibly far-reaching advances in A1 are coming in this more-or-less soft-science area. Thirty years of A1 research (dating from a 1956 conference at Dartmouth College at which the term A1 was coined) has already spawned many widespread, almost ordinary, products: window graphics, hand-held controllers (mouse). function menus, etc., all in an attempt to make computers and people more compatible. WHAT IS AN ES? A1 can be used to develop EXPERT SYSTEMS, which are computer programs or systems which contain knowledge and rules by which problems can be solved. or at least by which possible solutions can be suggested for very complex problems. A1 can be used to better define problems so that solutions can be found. An ES is designed not to process numbers, but to process information according to rules and logic derived from actual practice and experience. WHY AI? WHY ES? Companies are increasingly aware of the value of accumulated knowledge and experience in designing, building, operating, and maintaining the increasingly complex or expensive physical plants in any business. As knowledge branches out and becomes more specialized, the accumulated learning of a veteran operator or manager or engineer becomes a scarce resource well worth preserving. EXPERT SYSTEMS offer a means of doing that, reinforcing, not replacing, human capabilities.

As ligas com memória de forma (LMFs) destacam-se por apresentar propriedades especiais, possibilitando seu emprego em diversas aplicações tecnológicas. Esses materiais podem ser integrados a uma matriz polimérica, agindo como um reforço, constituindo uma nova classe de matérias, chamada de Compósitos Inteligentes, que têm despertado interesse por sua versatilidade na criação de atuadores e/ou sensores. Nesse contexto, fios de nitinol, foram tratados termicamente para obter temperaturas de transformação próximas a ambiente. Em seguida, amostras desse material foram submetidas a calorimetria diferencial de varredura para verificação das temperaturas de transformação. Posteriormente, os fios tratados receberam um treinamento termomecânico para obtenção do efeito memória de forma reversível e assim executar o movimento similar a abertura e ao fechamento de uma garra, pretendido para o atuador a ser desenvolvido. Após essa etapa, os fios já treinados foram incorporados a matriz constituída por silicone e resina epóxi, dando origem a um compósito que ao ser ativado por uma corrente elétrica, reproduz o movimento do treinamento termomecânico dado aos fios. Esta pesquisa tem por finalidade, desenvolver um atuador constituído por um compósito inteligente, analisando características como: transformação martensítica e flexibilidade.

Este trabalho foi realizado a partir da identificação do problema da alta geração de resíduos cafeeiros e de emissão de gases poluentes pelas indústrias siderúrgicas. Ao analisar as emissões nacionais de sistemas de energia, observou-se que o segmento da indústria de aço tem uma importante participação devido ao alto consumo de carvão metalúrgico e coque no balanço energético. O projeto teve como objetivo utilizar duas biomassas, a casca de café e o carvão vegetal, como uma fonte de energia no processo de redução do minério de ferro, através da injeção de finos pulverizados pelas ventaneiras de altos-fornos. O cafeeiro e a planta de eucalipto são fontes renováveis, ao contrário do carvão mineral, e através da fotossíntese capturam o gás CO2 da atmosfera, reduzindo parte da poluição causada pelos altos-fornos à coque. Para simular a possibilidade de injetar as biomassas estudadas, um simulador de injeção de materiais pulverizados foi utilizado. Foram utilizadas, também, técnicas para caracterizar os materiais, como classificação granulométrica, combustão, calorimetria, análise de gás, superfície específica, microscópica e química. Através do estudo, esta pesquisa mostra que a casca de café pode ser injetada em altos-fornos substituindo parcialmente a moinha de carvão vegetal.

In mining coal, the Nation's principal mineral fuel, loss of life has been much lower recently than in earlier years when coal mining contributed so heavily to the industrial-accident death toll in the United States. Particularly notable has been the relatively small number of deaths during the past few years compared with the number that occurred 20 or 30 years ago. Reports received by the United States Bureau of Mines, covering all commercially operated mines that were active during all or any part of the calendar year 1935, showed that accidents during that year had resulted in the loss of 1,242 lives. This death toll, although regrettable, represents a material improvement over the industry's experience during most years prior to 1935, and especially over the industry's worst year, 1907, when 3,242 men were killed. Fewer lives were lost in 1933, when 1,064 men were killed at work, than during any year for which complete figures are available.

The Government of Belize maintained strict control over spending in 1982 as a means of protecting its import-dependent economy against the effects of a general worldwide recession. The modest economic performance was not expected to differ substantially from the $152 million2 gross national product (GNP) estimated for 1981. Exports and reexports were expected to decline in 1982, partly as a result of the Mexican peso devaluation. Imports were also expected to decline slightly in 1982, but the overall trade deficit was projected some-what higher than the $44 million experienced in 1981. On September 21, 1982, Belize became an independent state. As a result, the new Government became eligible for assistance from international organizations such as the International Monetary Fund, the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank), and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). Belize's independence from its former status as a colony of Great Britain was marred somewhat by the unsettled territorial dispute between Great Britain and Guatemala. Guatemala declared Belize was a part of Guatemala and. therefore. refused to recognize it as an independent state. Negotations between Great Britain and Guatemala continued without resolution.

This study of the tin-tungsten ore of the Shepherd and Murphy Mine, in central northern Tasmania, was originally undertaken at the request of the Moina Tungsten-Tin Mining Co., N.L., as part of the research programme of the Mineragraphic Investigations Section of the C.S.I.R.O. It is based on the examination of a suite of specimens supplied by the management, supplemented by a more extensive collection and observations made by the author during a short visit to the mine in October, 1956.The Shepherd and Murphy Mine is at Moina, 36 miles S.W. of Devonport and 22 miles from Sheffield, the nearest railway station. It was worked almost· continuously from 1893 to 1919, when a fire destroyed the mill; to that date it had produced concentrates to the value of £141,000. After a long period of idleness, the mine was re-opened by the present company, but it has been announced recently that unfavourable market conditions have again forced closure.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe mine is on a deeply dissected plateau, about 2,500 ft. above sea level; it lies between the Iris and the Forth Rivers, whose valleys are deep gorges cut to about 400 to 600 ft. above sea level. From Moina westwards to the Iris River, a limestone regarded as part of the Gordon River Group, of Ordovician age, conformably overlies a sandstone containing tubicolar casts which are circular in cross section, half an inch in diameter and up to two feet long, and which resemble marine worm burrows (Elliston, 1953).

Seismic areas were in the eastern margin of the Qinghai-Tibet plain, whose structures were complicated, mainly composed of Maowen fault, Yingxiu fault and Pengxian-guanxian fault. The rapid rise of the Qinghai-Tibet plain led the crustal material of the eastern edge to move to the southeast along the faults on a large scale since the late Cenozoic; Minshan block structure and Long Men Mountain tectonic zone represented the strong nappe thrust movement as the east boundary of Chuanqing slip block; the stress was accumulating when squeezed, which to a certain extent resulted in breakdown of the crust, and earthquakes. The shock speed, high-energy accumulation, and the reversed dextrorotation of the earthquake fault characteristics et al. happened, which caused the development of secondary geological disastersts. According to on-site investigation, the typical geological disasters had thrust rock collapse, the instability deposit, the revival of potential debris flow et al. whose genetic model had been analysed.

Bureau of Mines in the form of information circulars. Then enough circulars have been completed it is planned to publish a more complete and comprehensive paper in bulletin form dealing with the subject of underground transportation. Progress reports, followed by bulletins, will be prepared from time to time dealing with other subjects included in the general study of mining methods at individual mines, such as mine development, drilling, and blasting; stoping methods (each principal stoping method to be summarized in a separate paper); ventilation; wage, contract end bonus systems, etc.

Certain commercial telephone test equipment was modified and a tone source and switching circuit were developed for use in the testing of mine pager phone systems. Many utility fuel choices 1990-95 defied expectations, with utility decisions and coal market developments ever more closely linked. The Central Appalachian coal boom never occurred; clean-enough coal was developed in the hard-hit Midwest; Colorado-Utah coal surged; Pittsburgh seam production strengthened; utilities embraced Powder River Basin coal; and emission allowance prices collapsed. Competition drove productivity gains, but the future is not a simple repeat. Phase 2 brings fewer viable compliance options. Mega-railroad pricing has become a key risk factor -- will this be countermanded by merging utilities and power market competition? Revenue losses from vintage contracts are problematic. Uncertainty also plagues natural gas, in spite of unanimity across major forecasts, since recent experience has been so heavily influenced by the gas bubble.

This document describes the development of a conventional mining equipment data base, and an approach for conducting industrial engineering studies of arbitrary mining systems employing network techniques. Data was acquired through underground time studies. Each member of a four-man field team was assigned to a specific machine during each shift for which observations were conducted. Using digital wrist watches and networks describing the man-machine interactions, all events occurring luring the course of each shift were recorded on cassette tapes. The tapes were transcribed, coded, keypunched, and validated using computerized editing techniques. The resulting data files were processed to provide statistics relating to activity durations and event frequencies. The results were used to evaluate operator, machine, and system performance for each section which was observed. Equipment, reliability, and maintainability analyses were conducted using the industrial engineering data files in conjunction with historical information collected at the mine site.

The property of the Alaska Juneau Gold Mining Co. is situated near the city of Juneau , Alaska , in what is known as the Harris mining district . Wholesale mining operations have been adopted on a large scale and 10,000 to 11,000 tons per day of gold- bearing ore are mined and sent to concentrators near Juneau . In addition to gold , the ore yields 0.6 ounce of silver and 13.0 pounds of lead to each ounce of gold recovered .

Durante a fabricação do aço as grandes siderúrgicas possuem usinas térmicas integradas aos seus processos industriais. Uma operação bastante comum na indústria siderúrgica é a geração de vapor, normalmente utilizado para a produção de trabalho mecânico em turbinas (vapor superaquecido) ou em processos de aquecimento, nos quais se emprega o vapor saturado. Estes vapores de processos também podem ser utilizados na geração de energia elétrica. Para isto, foi importante assegurar a qualidade da água e do vapor de baixa pressão (VBP) enviado para Termelétrica. Foi com este intuito que a TKCSA se preocupou em padronizar o (VBP) gerado na Caldeira Auxiliar da área de Utilidades e Caldeiras da Aciaria. O desafio era transformar o (VBP) na mesma qualidade do vapor produzido nas caldeiras recuperadoras de calor (HRSG). O procedimento adotado foi á modificação no tratamento químico, a instalação de uma monitoração química contínua e eficiente para assegurar os parâmetros químicos dentro da especificação técnica recomendada pelo EPRI - Electric Power Research Institute, Inc. Com este tratamento foi controlada as dosagens químicas, a operação da caldeira e a geração dos efluentes líquidos para o tratamento químico ambiental. Contudo foi possível tornar um mecanismo dinâmico e econômico para a empresa viabilizando a utilização do vapor na termelétrica.

Kimberlites and associated diamonds have been the focus of extensive exploration in central Saskatchewan since 1988. During 1989, Uranerz Exploration and Mining Limited identified 71 shallow magnetic anomalies in the Fort a la Corne area from detailed aeromagnetic surveys. By the end of 1991, 18 of these targets had been proven, by drilling, to be kimberlite bodies encased within Cretaceous sedimentary strata. From 1991 to 1997, the number of drill-confirmed kimberlite bodies increased to 69. Our current view, drawing on an integration of geophysical and geological information, is that the kimberlites are composed of individual bodies and multi-vent clusters of coalesced bodies, all apparently constructed of stacked, temporally distinct layers of pyroclastic crater-facies kimberlite. Diamond recoveries and geochemical results from associated heavy minerals at Fort a la Corne remain highly variable, although continued minibulk sampling is expected to improve the estimation of diamond grades for the most prospective bodies.

Here are summarized 162 papers, published between 1933 and 1967, that deal with various aspects of ore genesis. Emphasis is placed on additions to, or modifications of, ore-formation theory, no matter what type of deposit is discussed. More space is given to papers on the formation of base-metal sulfides solely because more papers are written on this subject. The final conclusion is reached that a chemically and geologically sound theory for the genesis of ore deposits can be built around the concept of concentration of ore e’ements in a magmatically produced ore fluid and around such surface processes as may act to concentrate economically valuable materials from rocks of any origin exposed at the surface.

(Pittsburg Meeting, March, 1910.) AT the Pittsburg meeting of the Institute, May, 1879, I made the first announcement in America of the results obtained by Sidney Gilchrist Thomas and Percy C. Gilchrist, ill their efforts to eliminate phosphorus in the manufacture of steel in the Bessemer converter and the open-hearth furnace.1 The first published statement in an American newspaper was a reprint of the first Thomas-Gilchrist paper, 2 which I sent to J. C. Bayles, at that time the editor. At the suggestion of many friends who were present at the Pittsburg meeting, and others who are cognizant of the beginnings of the process in the United States, and for the information of the younger generation of the iron and steel fraternity, I have thought it eminently proper that the history of the process in detail should be given where I made the first announcement and where the process has had its largest development. During my residence in England, from April, 1873, to February, 1879, and as a member of the Iron and Steel Institute since 1874, I was present at many of its meetings during those years. At nearly -every meeting the burden of discussion was the question of the use of pig-iron containing phosphorus in the. manufacture of steel by the Bessemer or the open-hearth process. "Autoclaves were first used in the metallurgical industry in 1893 to recover alumina from bauxite. In the 1940s and 1950s, several high temperature and pressure processes were invented in the laboratory of Professor Frank Forward at The University of British Columbia, in parallel with advances in equipment and processes by the Chemical Construction Corporation. Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited enlisted these groups to help develop the nickel sulfide ammonia leach process that was commercialized in 1954. Autoclave processes that have since been commercialized include high-pressure acid leaching of laterites, zinc pressure leaching, and pressure oxidation of refractory gold feedstocks. RÉSUMÉ En 1893, l’industrie métallurgique est la première à utiliser les autoclaves pour l’extraction de l’alumine dans la bauxite. Dans les années 1940 et 1950, plusieurs procédés à haute température et à haute pression sont inventés dans le laboratoire du Pr Frank Forward de l’université de la Colombie-Britannique (UBC) ; parallèlement, la Chemical Construction Corporation fait de grands progrès en matière d’équipement et de procédés. They are used in metallurgical refineries throughout the world to take advantage of the increased reaction kinetics and different reaction products that can be obtained in aqueous systems above the boiling temperature at atmospheric pressure. The word autoclave comes from the French “auto” and the Latin “clavis” and literally means self-locking—that is, the core distinguishing feature of an autoclave is that it includes a means for pressure regulation (e.g., a pressure relief valve). Denis Papin (Figure 1a), one of the inventors of the steam engine, was the first to make use of a safety valve to control steam pressure. He is credited with inventing the autoclave in 1679. Papin’s “digester” (Figure 1b) was a type of pressure cooker that was originally used to liquefy bones. Most commercial autoclaves are horizontal, multicompartment vessels with mechanical agitation, as shown in Figure 2a; however, the steam-agitated Pachuca vessels used to leach laterite ore in Moa, Cuba (Figure 2b), are also classified as autoclaves according to the self-locking definition provided above."

Sedimentary deposits of pluvial Lake Bonneville are an important source of sand and gravel suitable for aggregate and construction in Utah. Data on Lake Bonneville basin sand and gravel deposit thickness, volume, grain size, percent of fines, and durability were statistically analyzed to detect variations associated with geologic domains, geographic location, Lake Bonneville shorelines, and sand and gravel deposit type, and to construct quantitative deposit models. Analysis showed several trends; (1) sand and gravel in younger shorelines was slightly more durable and the deposits considerably larger in volume, (2) younger shore- lines are also more likely to contain more than one genetic deposit type, (3) the volume of terrace deposits is larger than beach deposits, (4) terraces and beaches are generally thicker than spits and bars, (5) the northern part of the Bonneville Basin contains slightly more durable sand and gravel than the southern part of the basin and is more likely to contain deposits composed of more than one genetic deposit type, aid (6) the Wasatch domain deposits are composed of more than one genetic deposit type more often than deposits of the Basin and Range domain. Three additional conclusions with immediate economic significance are; (1) the median sand and gravel deposit in the Wasatch domain, 360,000 m3 (275,000 yd3), is three times larger than that of the Basin and Range domain (120,000 m3 [90,000 yd3]), (2) the median deposit thickness in the Wasatch domain, 5.8 m (19.0 ft), is nearly twice that of the Basin and Range domain (3 m [lo ft]), and (3) the Wasatch domain also contains slightly larger diameter gravel. These three conclusions are significant because the trend for sand and gravel development in the Bonneville Basin is to move from the Wasatch domain to the Basin and Range domain. Smaller, thinner deposits with smaller diameter gravel will require more surface area to mine than would have been necessary in the Wasatch domain. The result is a higher cost for sand and gravel in construction projects in the Salt Lake City area, especially since the gravel must also be hauled farther.
